Lucas:

Your 10 foot pole is broken.

Lucas:

You've lost your 50 feet of rope

Lucas:

and you're down to your last torch.

Lucas:

Its guttering light shows your

Lucas:

footprints in the muck of the dungeon

Lucas:

floor behind you and disappears

Lucas:

into the ominous darkness ahead.

Lucas:

Loot or no loot, you just don't have

Lucas:

the resources to make it much farther.

Lucas:

You hear the scraping of long claws

Lucas:

on rough stone and outta the darkness.

Lucas:

It appears a nightmarish fusion

Lucas:

of human and spider, six feet

Lucas:

tall and easily 200 pounds.

Lucas:

Long, gangly limbs hang from hunched

Lucas:

shoulders over a pale pot belly.

Lucas:

It's needle-sharp teeth are

Lucas:

hidden behind grasping, glistening

Lucas:

fanged appendages on its face.

Lucas:

As its beady eyes meet yours,

Lucas:

its mouth opens in a nightmare

Lucas:

smile in a raspy voice it says,

Dillon Olney:

oh, jolly good, sir.

Dillon Olney:

You've wandered right into my web.

Dillon Olney:

Like what ho

Lucas:

Welcome back to

Lucas:

Spooktober on Making a Monster.

Lucas:

In this, the most monster-filled

Lucas:

month of the year, I'm bringing you

Lucas:

episodes with the monster creators

Lucas:

I met at GenConn 2022, leading up to

Lucas:

a couple of Halloween episodes I'm

Lucas:

really excited to share with you.

Lucas:

It has been the contention of this

Lucas:

show that monsters don't level up.

Lucas:

After all, that's what heroes do.

Lucas:

Gaining experience, abilities and

Lucas:

tactics is the defining element

Lucas:

of player characters in role

Lucas:

playing games and monsters are the

Lucas:

static stepping stones that let

Lucas:

characters reach those new heights.

Lucas:

And in that role, in this archetypical

Lucas:

story structure, monsters do and

Lucas:

don't do very specific things.

Lucas:

Occasionally though, I meet

Lucas:

designers whose monsters are

Lucas:

stories that grow in the telling.

Dillon Olney:

I am Dillon Olney.

Dillon Olney:

Uh, I am the creative director,

Dillon Olney:

founder, writer of Critical Crafting.

Dillon Olney:

And we put out 5E content every single

Dillon Olney:

month, uh, on Patreon, normally between

Dillon Olney:

15 to 80 pages of everything from

Dillon Olney:

adventures and encounters, monsters,

Dillon Olney:

classes, subclasses, items, spells, maps,

Cameron DeFord:

and I'm Cameron DeFord.

Cameron DeFord:

I am the, uh, co-writer and marketing

Cameron DeFord:

director of Critical Crafting.

Cameron DeFord:

Dillon focuses more on the

Cameron DeFord:

monsters and the items, spells,

Cameron DeFord:

feats, that sort of thing.

Cameron DeFord:

Um, I do our subclasses, our

Cameron DeFord:

classes, our player races and maps.

Cameron DeFord:

we started playing back

Cameron DeFord:

in 2017, maybe 16 or 17?

Cameron DeFord:

16, 17.

Cameron DeFord:

Um, Dillon was teaching most of us in our

Cameron DeFord:

group for the first time how to play D&D.

Cameron DeFord:

So We would play our D&D

Cameron DeFord:

games at Dillon's house.

Cameron DeFord:

We would play for four hours or so,

Cameron DeFord:

and then the game would wrap up.

Cameron DeFord:

We'd go upstairs and we'd get stalled

Cameron DeFord:

in the kitchen while we're talking

Cameron DeFord:

about the game we just played.

Cameron DeFord:

And we'd finally wrap up the conversation.

Cameron DeFord:

We'd move to the driveway,

Cameron DeFord:

we'd get talking again.

Cameron DeFord:

So a lot of our stuff was just the,

Cameron DeFord:

the early ideas of our content was

Cameron DeFord:

just coming out of these, Oh, that

Cameron DeFord:

was really cool, but it would've

Cameron DeFord:

been cool if this or if that.

Dillon Olney:

So Ol' Chap

Dillon Olney:

Ettercap, he's our mascot.

Dillon Olney:

The original idea from him actually

Dillon Olney:

came from, um, an old meme, people were

Dillon Olney:

making fun of the fact that, uh, you

Dillon Olney:

know, three five ettercap spoke common.

Lucas:

In the lore of Dungeons and

Lucas:

Dragons, an ettercap is a spider-like

Lucas:

humanoid that lives underground

Lucas:

and cooperates with other spider

Lucas:

creatures to set elaborate web

Lucas:

traps for passing adventurers.

Lucas:

First edition D&D, in 1981's Fend

Folio, gave this description:

"a

Folio, gave this description:

biped, roughly man-sized, with very

Folio, gave this description:

long arms, protruding potbelly, short

Folio, gave this description:

legs, and hairy skin, the ettercap

Folio, gave this description:

has clawed hands and two poison fangs

Folio, gave this description:

protruding from each side of its mouth.

Folio, gave this description:

Apparently it protrudes a lot.

Folio, gave this description:

In subsequent editions, ettercaps became

Folio, gave this description:

more and more like the spiders they

Folio, gave this description:

befriended, gaining eyes, pedipalps,

Folio, gave this description:

and fearsome claws as they went.

Folio, gave this description:

But they have always been presented,

Folio, gave this description:

as in the Fiend Folio, as "cruel,

Folio, gave this description:

cunning, and treacherous."

Folio, gave this description:

Now representing intelligence in game

Folio, gave this description:

mechanics is notoriously difficult, and

Folio, gave this description:

ettercaps have always fallen in that

Folio, gave this description:

especially problematic range between

Folio, gave this description:

what second edition called "Average Human

Folio, gave this description:

Intelligence" and "Semi-intelligent".

Folio, gave this description:

In 2003, Monster Manual 3.5 solved

Folio, gave this description:

this problem by giving ettercaps the

Folio, gave this description:

ability to speak Common, the language

Folio, gave this description:

shared by all player characters.

Folio, gave this description:

This decision has not been repeated

Folio, gave this description:

in any other edition of D&D.

Dillon Olney:

And people were joking

Dillon Olney:

around like, you know, Oh, jolly good

Dillon Olney:

sir You've wandered right into my web.

Dillon Olney:

Like what ho kind of a thing.

Dillon Olney:

Like here's this ettercap, you know?

Dillon Olney:

And we thought that's hilarious.

Dillon Olney:

Like, that's so much fun.

Dillon Olney:

And so I started introducing

Dillon Olney:

Ol' Chap Ettercap.

Dillon Olney:

And what would happen is when the players

Dillon Olney:

were in like a bind, like they're in

Dillon Olney:

the middle of a dungeon, they're low on

Dillon Olney:

potions or whatever, like they're all kind

Dillon Olney:

of like about to die kind of a thing.

Dillon Olney:

Well, Ol' Chap Ettercap would wander into

Dillon Olney:

the room with his, you know, top hat that

Dillon Olney:

has a whole plane of existence inside full

Dillon Olney:

of magical items in his shop and all this.

Dillon Olney:

And it was a, you know, oh,

Dillon Olney:

Tally ho boys, like, what's

Dillon Olney:

going on with you, sort of thing.

Dillon Olney:

And I'm just wandering through

Dillon Olney:

this dungeon, selling my wares, cuz

Dillon Olney:

where do you sell magical items?

Dillon Olney:

In a dungeon, that's where

Dillon Olney:

people need the most.

Dillon Olney:

Uh, so that was kind of the idea.

Dillon Olney:

And then he would do things.

Dillon Olney:

You know, instead of just, Oh yeah,

Dillon Olney:

you buy this stuff because the DM

Dillon Olney:

wants you to like, not die here.

Dillon Olney:

It was more like he could give you

Dillon Olney:

fun little side quest, or it could

Dillon Olney:

be a fun break from like some of

Dillon Olney:

the serious stuff in the campaign.

Dillon Olney:

And that's kind of where

Dillon Olney:

he started initially.

Dillon Olney:

Um, and then we decided to, to make him

Dillon Olney:

into like an NPC in some of our adventures

Dillon Olney:

for our Critical Crafting content.

Dillon Olney:

And eventually we said, we gotta stab.

Dillon Olney:

And when, when we decided to stat

Dillon Olney:

him, the month that people had voted

Dillon Olney:

on was called Cults of the Outsiders.

Dillon Olney:

And the Outsiders are

Dillon Olney:

are gods kind of a thing.

Dillon Olney:

So we made them to exist

Dillon Olney:

in any pantheon you want.

Dillon Olney:

They can still exist in it cuz they exist

Dillon Olney:

in their own little sort of pantheon.

Dillon Olney:

But we didn't like that.

Dillon Olney:

Five E did not have stat blocks for

Dillon Olney:

gods other than Tiamat and technically

Dillon Olney:

like Vecna, now, um, but we've always

Dillon Olney:

found very lackluster as a stat block.

Dillon Olney:

And we wanted god stat blocks

Dillon Olney:

that felt like they were god's.

Dillon Olney:

So we said, Well, if we're gonna

Dillon Olney:

do a god stat block, who better

Dillon Olney:

than Ol' Chap Ettercap to make

Dillon Olney:

you know, the god of merchants?

Dillon Olney:

Um, so that was kind

Dillon Olney:

of how he got started.

Cameron DeFord:

The whole fact that

Cameron DeFord:

his, like Genesis was around the idea

Cameron DeFord:

of him just being able to show up

Cameron DeFord:

at the right place at the right time

Cameron DeFord:

and help the players out of a bind.

Cameron DeFord:

Um, the inside the hat, he has the store

Cameron DeFord:

and inside the store you can find magical

Cameron DeFord:

items you might need, but they're very

Cameron DeFord:

expensive, so he's gonna send you on

Cameron DeFord:

a quest instead and working it right

Cameron DeFord:

into the, the story in an organic.

Cameron DeFord:

Um, but so with that being the,

Cameron DeFord:

the concept behind him, um, we

Cameron DeFord:

just think, Okay, well if, if he

Cameron DeFord:

is a god who's gonna worship him.

Cameron DeFord:

Okay.

Cameron DeFord:

So he's the patron of merchants, of,

Cameron DeFord:

of, of, inn keepers, of anybody that's

Cameron DeFord:

working in that sort of environment.

Dillon Olney:

And then we wrote the, the

Dillon Olney:

warlock subclass around the fact that,

Dillon Olney:

you know, he's the patron of merchants.

Dillon Olney:

He has the, the Old Sports'

Dillon Olney:

Society, which are the people

Dillon Olney:

that worship him, essentially.

Dillon Olney:

Those are all the guys sitting in the

Dillon Olney:

smoking room drinking scotch and, you

Dillon Olney:

know, uh, taking over the world with

Dillon Olney:

their words or whatever kind of a deal.

Dillon Olney:

Um, so Cameron wrote the, the

Dillon Olney:

subclass for the warlock for people

Dillon Olney:

that worship ol' chap, but kind

Dillon Olney:

of the abilities that they get.

Dillon Olney:

Um, so, and we wanted to give, like,

Dillon Olney:

we did stat blocks too for, for his

Dillon Olney:

minions, the, the old sports society.

Dillon Olney:

And we had wanted to figure out a

Dillon Olney:

way, like the other problem we had,

Dillon Olney:

because we have some morally ambiguous

Dillon Olney:

characters, is they come to the.

Dillon Olney:

What's the first thing

Dillon Olney:

that they try and do?

Dillon Olney:

They try and rob the shopkeeper, right?

Dillon Olney:

We said, Well, we wanna make sure

Dillon Olney:

that we're making something that

Dillon Olney:

makes sure that they don't want

Dillon Olney:

to rob every shopkeep they see.

Dillon Olney:

So if you mess around with one of the

Dillon Olney:

shopkeepers that worships Ol' Chap

Dillon Olney:

Ettercap, you can expect that you're

Dillon Olney:

gonna be in some trouble pretty soon.

Dillon Olney:

Whether it's ol' chaps showing

Dillon Olney:

up, or the merchant, you know, old

Dillon Olney:

sports society coming after you,

Dillon Olney:

or just the fact that the merchants

Dillon Olney:

themselves have special abilities that.

Dillon Olney:

Basically knock people

Dillon Olney:

unconscious, hold them in place.

Dillon Olney:

Uh, they know the location

Dillon Olney:

of like every item they own.

Dillon Olney:

If it's stolen, they know who stole

Dillon Olney:

it and where it is kind of a thing.

Dillon Olney:

. So that's kind of some of

Dillon Olney:

his domain stuff, I guess.

Dillon Olney:

He's really not supposed

Dillon Olney:

to be used in combat.

Dillon Olney:

Uh, but he does have some,

Dillon Olney:

some combat special abilities.

Dillon Olney:

So, um, some of them are kind of funny.

Dillon Olney:

I think he's got like, what, who

Dillon Olney:

unhand me or something as one of

Dillon Olney:

his, and it's something, I can't

Dillon Olney:

remember the exact wording of it,

Dillon Olney:

but essentially he can like teleport.

Dillon Olney:

So, you know, you grab the ol'

Dillon Olney:

chap, Ettercap the shop, keep you're

Dillon Olney:

trying to rob him or whatever, and

Dillon Olney:

he just, Oh, you're grappling me.

Dillon Olney:

No, you're not anymore.

Dillon Olney:

I just teleported over

Dillon Olney:

here kind of a thing.

Dillon Olney:

Um, so he is got a lot of

Dillon Olney:

special abilities though.

Dillon Olney:

He's got.

Dillon Olney:

You know, like we said, he, he's

Dillon Olney:

got his top hat that has an extra

Dillon Olney:

dimensional space inside of it.

Dillon Olney:

It's basically a whole plane of existence

Dillon Olney:

that's all made of interconnecting rooms.

Dillon Olney:

So he's got, uh, his shop kind of

Dillon Olney:

on the main area, but then he's got

Dillon Olney:

libraries and b theories and tea rooms

Dillon Olney:

and rooms that he's forgotten for

Dillon Olney:

so long that people who've been in

Dillon Olney:

there have formed civilizations and

Dillon Olney:

he's completely forgot they exist,

Dillon Olney:

you know, all inside of the top app.

Dillon Olney:

Uh, and then we gave him like a gold tooth

Dillon Olney:

that basically lets him take anything

Dillon Olney:

gold and if he touches it to the tooth,

Dillon Olney:

Like transports inside the tooth and then

Dillon Olney:

he can pull it out at any time he wants.

Dillon Olney:

Uh, we gave him some spells,

Dillon Olney:

uh, and like appraisal things.

Dillon Olney:

So like being a god of merchants,

Dillon Olney:

we're like, what's he do all the time?

Dillon Olney:

He's gonna be appraising stuff.

Dillon Olney:

He's gonna be looking at magic items.

Dillon Olney:

So he has things that allow

Dillon Olney:

him to identify magical items

Dillon Olney:

just by looking at them.

Dillon Olney:

Uh, probably his most powerful special

Dillon Olney:

ability is that he can just summon

Dillon Olney:

magical items at will of, I think

Dillon Olney:

it's very rare rarity and lower.

Dillon Olney:

So he can summon them at will and

Dillon Olney:

he can attune to, Oh, I haven't read

Dillon Olney:

the stat block in a while, but it's

Dillon Olney:

something like 10 magic items at a time.

Dillon Olney:

So when he shows up, if you're gonna

Dillon Olney:

mess with him, you're also gonna mess

Dillon Olney:

with at least 10 very rare magical items

Dillon Olney:

that he can summon and attune to very,

Dillon Olney:

very quickly . So, yeah, and I think

Dillon Olney:

we made it so that he did not take a

Dillon Olney:

long rest to attune to things either.

Dillon Olney:

So in the middle of combat,

Dillon Olney:

he could just be like, Boo

Dillon Olney:

attune, boo attune, kind of a.

Dillon Olney:

So the DM had a way, uh, to kind of

Dillon Olney:

be like, Okay, the party's really,

Dillon Olney:

you know, messing him up or whatever.

Dillon Olney:

I need to get him outta here.

Dillon Olney:

Well, I'm gonna give him, I don't

Dillon Olney:

know, carpet of flying or whatnot,

Dillon Olney:

and get him out kind of a deal.

Dillon Olney:

Uh, we also gave him regenerative

Dillon Olney:

abilities because why not?

Dillon Olney:

So he's a god.

Dillon Olney:

So if he's, if he's reduced to

Dillon Olney:

zero hit points, essentially

Dillon Olney:

him and his top hat vanish.

Dillon Olney:

His top hat reappears in the nearest

Dillon Olney:

marketplace to him, and then he

Dillon Olney:

regenerates within a few feet of that top.

Dillon Olney:

So that was a fun one too.

Lucas:

Ol' Chap Ettercap is

Lucas:

a meme that went too far.

Lucas:

Or you know what?

Lucas:

Maybe just far enough, but it

Lucas:

carries with it a certain satire of

Lucas:

the age of the gentleman explorer

Lucas:

that forms such an integral part

Lucas:

of the DNA of role playing games.

Dillon Olney:

We kind of gave him that,

Dillon Olney:

like the old British clubs, right.

Dillon Olney:

The portly men with the cigars

Dillon Olney:

and the scotch and all that.

Dillon Olney:

And the whole idea being that there's

Dillon Olney:

these very affluent people that can kind

Dillon Olney:

of control whatever they want, right?

Dillon Olney:

Uh, and so we kind of took that

Dillon Olney:

and ran with it and kind of

Dillon Olney:

made it into a bit of a farce.

Dillon Olney:

He's a benevolent character, but at

Dillon Olney:

the same time, like one of the big

Dillon Olney:

things about him in our campaign is

Dillon Olney:

that he really doesn't understand

Dillon Olney:

how the common person operates.

Dillon Olney:

So, like when he sends an adventure on a

Dillon Olney:

quest, he'll, Hey, you know, Oh, what ho

Dillon Olney:

I just need you to go deal with a few like

Dillon Olney:

spiders that are in my, you know, shop.

Dillon Olney:

Like, could you just

Dillon Olney:

clear them out for me?

Dillon Olney:

And the adventures that are lower level

Dillon Olney:

go in there and there's like six beboleths

Dillon Olney:

running around and they're like, Holy,

Dillon Olney:

we're all gonna die, kind of thing.

Dillon Olney:

And he's like, I don't

Dillon Olney:

understand what the problem is.

Dillon Olney:

Like, you know, so we, we kind of,

Dillon Olney:

I don't know that we thought too

Dillon Olney:

much on like commerce as a whole

Dillon Olney:

with him being the god of it.

Dillon Olney:

It was more we wanted him to

Dillon Olney:

take something and kind of.

Dillon Olney:

Take it, take it a little too far, right?

Dillon Olney:

Like take it and blow it out

Dillon Olney:

of proportion into sort of a

Dillon Olney:

funny, fun sort of a character.

Cameron DeFord:

Uh, he's been a lot of

Cameron DeFord:

fun though, just because it, it's been

Cameron DeFord:

interesting the fact that he originated

Cameron DeFord:

in our actual home game and I, like, I met

Cameron DeFord:

him the first time as a player and he was

Cameron DeFord:

our, our ticket out of dying or whatever.

Cameron DeFord:

Um, then the, it came at a cost.

Cameron DeFord:

We had to go do a, a side quest

Cameron DeFord:

to be able to earn what we

Cameron DeFord:

needed, uh, from him or whatever.

Cameron DeFord:

Uh, but, so it's been cool now,

Cameron DeFord:

like getting to flesh him out now on

Cameron DeFord:

the other side, the creative side.

Cameron DeFord:

Um, and then just, yeah, like the, the,

Cameron DeFord:

the cool thing that kind of came with

Cameron DeFord:

it too was that, uh, once he was just an

Cameron DeFord:

NPC or a monstrous NPC or whatever, and

Cameron DeFord:

then seeing him grow into the, the god.

Cameron DeFord:

Like, at first it was just almost a joke.

Cameron DeFord:

Like, Oh well, Ol' Chap Ettercap,

Cameron DeFord:

where would he get a, a pocket

Cameron DeFord:

universe inside of a top hat, right?

Cameron DeFord:

Like, that's obviously something

Cameron DeFord:

that only like a god would have.

Cameron DeFord:

So, oh, actually why isn't he a god?

Cameron DeFord:

Let's make him a god.

Cameron DeFord:

And then so him growing into a god.

Cameron DeFord:

And then when we were for that

Cameron DeFord:

same month needing a, um, a player

Cameron DeFord:

subclass, and we thought, Oh, well

Cameron DeFord:

let's do a warlock patron because

Cameron DeFord:

we're doing four gods this month.

Cameron DeFord:

Like, oh, well, why not have

Cameron DeFord:

him be a warlock patron?

Cameron DeFord:

And so, I don't know, it's just

Cameron DeFord:

been cool just to kind of see him.

Cameron DeFord:

Yeah.

Cameron DeFord:

Flesh out and grow into what

Cameron DeFord:

he's become or whatever.

Dillon Olney:

So he's started, like

Dillon Olney:

Cameron saying, he started, you

Dillon Olney:

know, in our home brew setting and

Dillon Olney:

we were playing 3.5 at the time.

Dillon Olney:

Uh, and he didn't have any

Dillon Olney:

stats, like at that point I was.

Dillon Olney:

I want a cool like, you know,

Dillon Olney:

funny sort of ol' chap ettercap

Dillon Olney:

guy to throw in at my players.

Dillon Olney:

And, and it was, it was a running

Dillon Olney:

joke too cuz I, I love ettercaps.

Dillon Olney:

Like that's one of the,

Dillon Olney:

I just, I don't know why.

Dillon Olney:

I just love them.

Dillon Olney:

And I always argued with another guy

Dillon Olney:

cuz we were doing 3D sculpts and he

Dillon Olney:

is like, nobody wants enter caps.

Dillon Olney:

Like, nobody likes enter caps.

Dillon Olney:

I'm like, but they're

Dillon Olney:

going to like, just wait.

Dillon Olney:

And so, you know, I'd wear, I'd,

Dillon Olney:

you know, back then I had a shirt

Dillon Olney:

that said, you know, ol' chap

Dillon Olney:

enter cap on it and everything.

Dillon Olney:

And uh, so he started out just, you

Dillon Olney:

know, no stats, just an mpc and then,

Dillon Olney:

I guess we officially put him into

Dillon Olney:

content in October, so we stuck him

Dillon Olney:

in our first release, Unhallowed Eve.

Dillon Olney:

Um, essentially, you know, not showing

Dillon Olney:

his divinity or anything like that.

Dillon Olney:

He's just an mpc that essentially we

Dillon Olney:

wanted, uh, a a, he wanted one of the

Dillon Olney:

grandmas that was handing out candy.

Dillon Olney:

There's like a trick or

Dillon Olney:

treat thing in the town.

Dillon Olney:

And his little like side quest is he

Dillon Olney:

wants the candy from this grandma.

Dillon Olney:

Let's say he's not a kid, she won't give

Dillon Olney:

it to him, and so he hires the adventure.

Dillon Olney:

To go pretend to be children in whatever

Dillon Olney:

way they can and go and get this

Dillon Olney:

candy right, and bring it back to him.

Dillon Olney:

And of course he gives them like

Dillon Olney:

awesome stuff if they do it.

Dillon Olney:

Um, but, and the funny thing too with

Dillon Olney:

that is like, he could totally do that.

Dillon Olney:

Like he could get whatever he wants,

Dillon Olney:

but he just sort of has fun messing

Dillon Olney:

around with people all the time.

Dillon Olney:

Right.

Dillon Olney:

So he did that and then we

Dillon Olney:

put him in our may release.

Dillon Olney:

Um, and that version we put

Dillon Olney:

him in like old Jurassic Park

Dillon Olney:

kind of style or like a safari.

Dillon Olney:

Uh, and we stuck him on an island.

Dillon Olney:

So we called that one old CHP

Dillon Olney:

ettercap's Dino Safari, and essentially

Dillon Olney:

he's going on safari, but he's too

Dillon Olney:

lazy to hunt the dinosaurs himself.

Dillon Olney:

So he asked the adventures to go

Dillon Olney:

do it for him so that he can mount

Dillon Olney:

them and claim that he, you know,

Dillon Olney:

well he's sponsored the hunt, so,

Dillon Olney:

you know, he's the one who did it.

Dillon Olney:

Uh, and he, he'll give them different

Dillon Olney:

stuff if they bring them back alive

Dillon Olney:

so he can put 'em in his, like

Dillon Olney:

menagerie, um, or dead kind of a.

Dillon Olney:

Yeah.

Dillon Olney:

Um, so that one was fun.

Dillon Olney:

And then in June we're like,

Dillon Olney:

Well, we've done him twice,

Dillon Olney:

but we never gave him stats.

Dillon Olney:

It's time to finally stat him out.

Dillon Olney:

It's been

Cameron DeFord:

really cool too, because

Cameron DeFord:

the, when we just played with him in

Cameron DeFord:

our game as an NPC, we would just like

Cameron DeFord:

theater of the mind that going inside of

Cameron DeFord:

his hat and what it looks like and stuff.

Cameron DeFord:

But when we then added him to

Cameron DeFord:

the game, we were like, Well, we

Cameron DeFord:

obviously need to make a map for it.

Cameron DeFord:

So we made a map that's just

Cameron DeFord:

a, a little tiny magic shop.

Cameron DeFord:

When you go up to him, you just

Cameron DeFord:

kind of hop right into his hat

Cameron DeFord:

and now you're in this shop.

Cameron DeFord:

And then as we've kind of like used

Cameron DeFord:

him more, we've like built off of that.

Cameron DeFord:

So, um, we then updated the map to

Cameron DeFord:

now there's a spiral staircase and he

Cameron DeFord:

has a tavern upstairs with some beds.

Cameron DeFord:

So if you're in the middle of a dungeon

Cameron DeFord:

and you need to crash somewhere,

Cameron DeFord:

sleep, you can sleep here, but

Cameron DeFord:

it's gonna cost you a lot of money.

Cameron DeFord:

So, um, we then, like Dillon said, we

Cameron DeFord:

used him for May for the Dino Safari.

Cameron DeFord:

So now there's an additional

Cameron DeFord:

floor that has a, basically like

Cameron DeFord:

a, a monster menagerie inside.

Cameron DeFord:

A little observation deck and then

Cameron DeFord:

different bios where he can put his

Cameron DeFord:

little dinos once you collect them.

Cameron DeFord:

So it's been fun just from that standpoint

Cameron DeFord:

too, just the, um, all the things that

Cameron DeFord:

are exist within this, uh, this top hat.

Cameron DeFord:

But, um, kind of along a similar

Cameron DeFord:

line though, when we were building,

Cameron DeFord:

because he's so like far out there and

Cameron DeFord:

just so like different, we wanted to

Cameron DeFord:

reflect that in the subclass we did.

Cameron DeFord:

And so we tried to, to come

Cameron DeFord:

up with similar things.

Cameron DeFord:

Uh, when you, when you choose the

Cameron DeFord:

subclass, when you make that patch

Cameron DeFord:

with the ol' chap, you select a

Cameron DeFord:

hat and so you pick a top hat or a

Cameron DeFord:

bowler, or we had a third hat, uh,

Cameron DeFord:

maybe like a trico or something.

Cameron DeFord:

But anyway, so you, you pick, you

Cameron DeFord:

pick one of three hats and now that

Cameron DeFord:

becomes your, your ol' chap hat.

Cameron DeFord:

And so right at first level it,

Cameron DeFord:

inside of it, it exists like a,

Cameron DeFord:

a two, a two by two, by two cubic

Cameron DeFord:

foot of, of like just a pocket.

Cameron DeFord:

And so you can just store

Cameron DeFord:

little things in there.

Cameron DeFord:

And as you advance throughout the

Cameron DeFord:

class, it gets bigger and bigger

Cameron DeFord:

and bigger just to emulate you

Cameron DeFord:

becoming a, a, a follower of his.

Cameron DeFord:

And, um, an ability where you

Cameron DeFord:

can spend a, uh, I think an hour

Cameron DeFord:

observing an inn or a tavern.

Cameron DeFord:

And, uh, you basically, essentially attune

Cameron DeFord:

yourself to this, this physical location.

Cameron DeFord:

And once you've done that, um,

Cameron DeFord:

you have advantage on any Charisma

Cameron DeFord:

check with the, the owner, the

Cameron DeFord:

proprietor of that location.

Cameron DeFord:

So if you're trying to gather intel, if

Cameron DeFord:

you're trying to, you're trying to haggle

Cameron DeFord:

on getting room prices from a place.

Cameron DeFord:

Um, you also then, while you're attuned

Cameron DeFord:

to it, you always, uh, magically know

Cameron DeFord:

the location of that place as long as

Cameron DeFord:

you're within a thousand feet of it

Cameron DeFord:

or a thousand miles of it or whatever.

Cameron DeFord:

So we, we came up with ways where it's

Cameron DeFord:

like warlocks are always seen as just this

Cameron DeFord:

eldtrich blast, rinse, wash, and repeat.

Cameron DeFord:

So let's take some really far out

Cameron DeFord:

there, ideas and injected into it.

Cameron DeFord:

So that's been really fun too.

Lucas:

Monsters grow in the telling

Lucas:

and the space where that narrative

Lucas:

growth overlaps with the mechanics

Lucas:

of the game is the unique joy of

Lucas:

tabletop RPGs for its players and

Lucas:

for me as a monster journalist.

Lucas:

So thanks for listening

Lucas:

Dillon Olney:

for free on the website.
