Speaker:

Sorry.

2

:

Hey, welcome to another episode

of the daily Bible podcast.

3

:

Welcome back.

4

:

We are back with some

resources recommended.

5

:

Concise resources.

6

:

Because it's super concise.

7

:

Okay.

8

:

So somebody wrote in, um, to

us and said, Hey, here's some

9

:

good resources for people.

10

:

And, and I would agree with these, uh,

the first one being the words and works

11

:

of Jesus Christ by Dwight Pentecost.

12

:

Now that's a name, right?

13

:

He was actually one of my

profs at Dallas seminary.

14

:

I got to take the life of Christ from him.

15

:

That's cool.

16

:

He knew all of this, then.

17

:

Uh, yeah, everything.

18

:

I actually helped him write the book.

19

:

No, no, no.

20

:

Of course.

21

:

The words and works of Jesus Christ

by Dwight Pentecost, helpful survey,

22

:

uh, that, that goes into detail.

23

:

There.

24

:

Pentecost.

25

:

Somebody asked him in

one of our classes, Dr.

26

:

Pentecost, that's a, quite the

name for a seminary professor.

27

:

Well, it turns out his relative name.

28

:

No.

29

:

We're uh, fleeing persecution from the, in

France, the French Huguenots as they fled.

30

:

And when they landed in the United

States, fleeing persecution or

31

:

the Americas fleeing persecution.

32

:

They landed on the day of Pentecost.

33

:

And so they changed the

last name to Pentecost.

34

:

Cool story.

35

:

Yeah.

36

:

So that one is helpful.

37

:

Cool survey.

38

:

Um, he uses one called the

Christ of the gospels by JW

39

:

shepherd who wrote it in 1939.

40

:

Um, There's a, another one that I want

to recommend the life and times of Jesus,

41

:

the Messiah by Alfred Eder shine L yeah.

42

:

Either sham.

43

:

Uh, the life and times of Jesus, the

Messiah, these are helpful because editor,

44

:

sham writes from a Jewish perspective.

45

:

And so it gives us some cultural

background to everything going on.

46

:

Uh, that's, that's good and helpful.

47

:

So, 99 cents on Kendall.

48

:

There you go.

49

:

99 cents.

50

:

Yeah, can't beat that price.

51

:

He has another one on the temple

and the, the just helpful.

52

:

Perception and perspective into these.

53

:

These are just some companions

to have, as you study the

54

:

gospels as you go through them.

55

:

So.

56

:

And Matt, let us encourage you

to just pick up books and read.

57

:

Yeah.

58

:

But buy some books by some really

strong, godly, biblical, but I mean

59

:

the old books are great because the

guys can't say anything new that are

60

:

going to be like, what are you saying?

61

:

Write a great.

62

:

Going off on the deep end, right?

63

:

So some of these books, I've

not read, I've not read.

64

:

I probably have something by Pentecost in

my library, but I don't think I've read

65

:

anything, but that book, it looks great.

66

:

And this one here by either shine.

67

:

Uh, 1200 pages for a buck.

68

:

Yeah, man, that sounds good.

69

:

Well, yeah.

70

:

Yeah.

71

:

Do Pentacostal was amazing.

72

:

He came in and taught a master's

level course on the life of

73

:

Christ would just his Bible.

74

:

That's amazing, bro.

75

:

Like he just he'd done it for so long.

76

:

That.

77

:

He just, I'm glad I'm going to do that.

78

:

So he walked in, which is his new

Testament sat down and taught the class.

79

:

When I got my resurrected body.

80

:

I'm going to use my brain for everything.

81

:

No phones.

82

:

Anywhere near that.

83

:

Speaking of the resurrected body.

84

:

Here's the question.

85

:

The concept of our resurrection

is interesting to me because there

86

:

are so many different views on the

timeline and what actually happens.

87

:

After or when we die.

88

:

If we don't have our resurrected bodies

yet, can we say for certain what certainty

89

:

that we will be in heaven right away?

90

:

Is it possible that we could be frozen

in time until we are resurrected and can.

91

:

That's what I, that's what I should do.

92

:

Can you talk about this idea of soul

sleep versus our disembodied soul

93

:

is going to have an immediately.

94

:

Thank you.

95

:

Yeah.

96

:

Um, Remember concise.

97

:

Yeah.

98

:

Let me go to second Corinthians

five, just to answer this real quick,

99

:

uh, for, we know that if the tent

that is our earthly home, that's

100

:

our earthly body is destroyed.

101

:

We have a building from God, a house not

made with hands eternal in the heavens.

102

:

This.

103

:

This is our, our glorified body.

104

:

In this tent, we groan longing to

put on our heavenly dwelling, Ethan

105

:

deep, by putting it on, we may

not be found naked or unclothed.

106

:

For while we are still in this tent, our

earthly body, we groan being burdened.

107

:

Not that we should be unclothed,

but that we would be further

108

:

clothed, have the better, have

the glorified body so that what is

109

:

mortal may be swallowed up by life.

110

:

He was prepared us for this

very thing is God who has given

111

:

us the spirit as a guarantee.

112

:

So we are always of good courage.

113

:

We know that while we are at home

in the body, this earthly body,

114

:

we are away from the Lord for, we

walk by faith and not by sight.

115

:

Yes, we are of good courage.

116

:

We would rather be away from the

body in, at home with the Lord.

117

:

So there's the answer to the

first part of the question.

118

:

How do we know that we're actually

with the Lord when we go, because

119

:

when we're away from this body, We're

at home with the Lord, the spirit.

120

:

There's no intermediate intermediary state

of the spirit in a holding tank somewhere.

121

:

Waiting to go to heaven.

122

:

Um, and so to be away from the body

is to be present with the Lord.

123

:

So there could be an intermediate

state where we don't have a body.

124

:

We're not yet in our glorified.

125

:

But we're still with the Lord, right?

126

:

Um, which means we were wearing

something where we have something

127

:

that, that represents our person,

but what that is, I don't know.

128

:

That's where it gets interesting.

129

:

Maybe God gives us a loaner, like

avatar got these blue long limbs.

130

:

And that maybe that's something

that we would have, right?

131

:

Yes.

132

:

But there is an intermediate state.

133

:

Or perhaps in that.

134

:

Intermediate state heaven is more

a state of, of consciousness and

135

:

awareness than it is a physical realm.

136

:

At this point, you just went into

an area that this is the bed.

137

:

Okay.

138

:

So our brains are, there

are our spirits are.

139

:

There are personality who we are, right.

140

:

That that's the soul.

141

:

That's the immaterial

part of the body, right?

142

:

Is there.

143

:

So everything that makes up

who we are, our cognitive

144

:

minus our body minus our body.

145

:

And that's what Paul means when he

says there were unclothed, right.

146

:

We're naked because we don't

have our body exactly longing

147

:

for the glorified body is heaven.

148

:

A place.

149

:

Yes.

150

:

In the sense that we understand it.

151

:

Like if.

152

:

So when someone dies their spirit,

their soul goes to a physical place.

153

:

Does God, because Jesus is

somewhere physical right now.

154

:

Right?

155

:

He's he's got a physical body.

156

:

That's got a resurrected by,

so he's physically somewhere.

157

:

Yes.

158

:

So theoretically, could we go there?

159

:

I mean, I mean, obviously

everyone goes there.

160

:

Who's dead, but can, can, can

we drive past it in a spaceship?

161

:

Is it, is it somewhere out there?

162

:

I mean, where is it?

163

:

I mean, we, we grew up thinking

about heaven is up hill is down.

164

:

Right, right.

165

:

I.

166

:

I mean that's that's

tradition is all that is.

167

:

Um, we talk about every knee is gonna

bow in heaven, above and in every tongue

168

:

confess and under the earth as well.

169

:

Right.

170

:

And that's that some of

those concepts of the.

171

:

Residents of helping

some more internal now.

172

:

Uh, we've studied that the geological

layers of the earth and nobody has

173

:

found, and here's the hell layer.

174

:

And then you get to the magma and then.

175

:

It's never gotten that far down though.

176

:

So maybe it's that's true.

177

:

card of yours, I guess.

178

:

So forgive the silliness.

179

:

I think it's a real place.

180

:

It's a physical place.

181

:

It's a real.

182

:

Physical, I believe it is

because Jesus is there.

183

:

So it would have to be some

element of physical, right.

184

:

He's somewhere in the cosmos.

185

:

Yes.

186

:

Another dimension, perhaps?

187

:

Yes.

188

:

Okay.

189

:

I'm open to that team.

190

:

Yeah.

191

:

Belinda Carlisle said,

heaven's a place on earth.

192

:

Is that true?

193

:

No, it's not it's.

194

:

It is ultimately though, right?

195

:

No, well, no.

196

:

It's well, yes, the new

heaven is temporary.

197

:

Okay.

198

:

Maybe that's a point we

need to make another hole.

199

:

Yeah.

200

:

It's a holdings, a holding

place and it's temporary, right?

201

:

Because in the end, the eternal

state is in the new earth.

202

:

And so that's, I would

say it comes heaven.

203

:

Yeah, but it's not heaven because

heaven is the place right now.

204

:

The new earth is the new earth.

205

:

It's the new Jerusalem.

206

:

It's the eternal, it's the kingdom of God.

207

:

I'm more comfortable with that language

than I am heaven on earth because.

208

:

I think heaven is, is a temporal place.

209

:

So it was hell the lake

of fire is the eternal.

210

:

Place of torment for the, those that

have rejected Christ and the new earth

211

:

is the eternal place of rest and, and

life for those that have embraced Christ.

212

:

Um, So.

213

:

So is the term heaven, then

it's kind of a misnomer the

214

:

way that people tend to use it.

215

:

What you're getting at.

216

:

Cause we, we talk about it as

though it's the eternal state.

217

:

It's not, it's not the eternal state.

218

:

Speaking of the intermediate state.

219

:

So Belinda Carlisle lied to all of us.

220

:

She did in 1987, she was saying,

heaven's a place on earth.

221

:

Yeah.

222

:

And it also should be right.

223

:

Or a strongly worded email.

224

:

Yeah, probably.

225

:

What.

226

:

Th there's a worship song out there.

227

:

Um, Beautiful man.

228

:

What a beautiful name, right?

229

:

Beautiful.

230

:

That's a great song.

231

:

It's killer and the bridge.

232

:

Amazing.

233

:

Right.

234

:

You have no right death

could not hold us all that.

235

:

Like just phenomenal.

236

:

I have a problem with the song.

237

:

Didn't wan to begin with that.

238

:

Yeah.

239

:

Jesus, you brought heaven down.

240

:

What's wrong with that?

241

:

Think about what we're saying there.

242

:

You didn't want heaven without us.

243

:

God.

244

:

There was a deficiency in

the Trinity that caused.

245

:

Yes.

246

:

Yes.

247

:

To say that someone doesn't want something

doesn't mean that they're efficient or

248

:

not having it, but it's, it's a it's

I don't want this state the way it is.

249

:

Isn't that true?

250

:

But that's not true.

251

:

That's not where God was there

because that implies there's something

252

:

better than what I have right now.

253

:

What I have is lacking.

254

:

There was nothing lacking.

255

:

That prompted God to create.

256

:

And so in the sense of, of, of

that, I, I can't sing that line.

257

:

You didn't want heaven without us.

258

:

It makes it no.

259

:

The other problem is I think

it makes it a man-centered.

260

:

Focus on the gospel.

261

:

So you would contend that

it's not a true statement.

262

:

You did, it's not true that he

didn't want heaven without us.

263

:

Right.

264

:

I don't think that was true.

265

:

I don't think it was the, the

impetus for them to, okay.

266

:

That's different though to say

it's true, but not complete is one.

267

:

And I might agree with you on that.

268

:

I mean, who writes that song?

269

:

Probably someone that will sound great.

270

:

Okay, we'll see then we're in a

different territory altogether,

271

:

but it's a true statement.

272

:

I think it's just not the full statement.

273

:

But I think all of poetry,

all of music is, is, is.

274

:

It's poetic.

275

:

It's not meant to convey the whole of it.

276

:

It's conveying a particular part of it.

277

:

That that says, oh, I mean, if you

look at the Psalms, the Psalms,

278

:

say things in a hyperbolic.

279

:

Parabolic way, even that are meant

to say, look, here's, here's the way

280

:

this is like, Without saying, this is

all that we can say about the subject.

281

:

Yeah, I still do.

282

:

I still don't.

283

:

I can't get there with that, that line.

284

:

I will change it for you next.

285

:

It opens up the door to a

deficiency in the Godhead.

286

:

And I can't, I can't get there.

287

:

God was inter.

288

:

Was he eternally satisfied in himself.

289

:

He was completely, he had

everything that he needed.

290

:

There was nothing that he needed.

291

:

There was nothing that he

lacked that he desired.

292

:

Okay.

293

:

If we're going to complain

about songs, they have one too.

294

:

Paul Baloche.

295

:

I love this guy.

296

:

He writes such good music,

but its most famous song.

297

:

Probably the most famous song,

like a rose trampled on the ground.

298

:

Uh, you took the fall.

299

:

I mean, no, that's not the,

that's not the worst part.

300

:

Uh, Bobo.

301

:

Above all Paul.

302

:

Is it not think of me above.

303

:

All right, glory.

304

:

God is above all.

305

:

I was, I was part of that

calculation, but I was not above.

306

:

All right.

307

:

Let's be mad as long as together, get

off of our theological lawns kids.

308

:

All right.

309

:

Uh, let's get into the

text cause we got a doozy.

310

:

Uh, we are in the sermon on the mountain.

311

:

It is just, just the seminar

Mount Matthew five through seven.

312

:

Uh, Matthew five 20 is a verse that I want

you to know and pay attention to because

313

:

it frames what Matthew five through

seven or at least in part is about.

314

:

It is about kingdom ethics.

315

:

In other words, it's about, you know,

the, the ideal follower of Jesus.

316

:

What does his life look like?

317

:

Well, it looks like

Matthew five through seven.

318

:

But it's also there's.

319

:

Jesus is doing something.

320

:

He's going to make a statement

here in Matthew five 20.

321

:

He says, unless your righteousness exceeds

that of the scribes and Pharisees, you

322

:

will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

323

:

His hearers would have concluded

when he said that that's impossible.

324

:

The Pharisees and the scribes

were the most righteous of all.

325

:

And though they had their hypocrisy

and do they have their issues that

326

:

they were righteous individuals.

327

:

And, and so there's something to that

there, and Jesus is holding them up

328

:

saying you have to be better than that.

329

:

And the conclusion to say, that's

not possible that Jesus would have

330

:

said exactly that that's the point.

331

:

And so you need an alien righteousness,

you need a greater righteousness.

332

:

And so there's.

333

:

There's a gospel.

334

:

Element to the sermon on the Mount here.

335

:

That should cause us to say,

man, this is super hard now.

336

:

That doesn't cause us to conclude.

337

:

So I'm not going to try, right.

338

:

It causes us to say, man,

I need the righteousness of

339

:

Christ to do this perfectly.

340

:

And so I'm not going to be

able to do this perfectly.

341

:

I'm not trying to earn my way into heaven

by, by nailing the sermon on the Mount.

342

:

I'm I'm pursuing the sermon on the

Mount because the sermon on the

343

:

Mount is about being more like Jesus.

344

:

Jesus.

345

:

This is the only one that

could do this perfectly.

346

:

Jesus, the one that did do this perfectly.

347

:

And so as we read this, we need to

read this with that understanding

348

:

in mind, saying, Hey, look, I

need to be more like Christ.

349

:

That's what this is about.

350

:

This is not about meriting my,

my salvation or anything else.

351

:

Fair enough.

352

:

Yeah.

353

:

Opens with the beatitudes.

354

:

They be attitudes in

verses two through 12.

355

:

Uh, blessed is that word

in the Greek means happy.

356

:

So as he goes through here and

he talks about all the different

357

:

characteristics here, it says happy is.

358

:

And in a lot of these, you're going to

say, wait a minute, that seems like a.

359

:

An oxymoron, verse four, happy are those

who mourn for they shall be comforted.

360

:

Well, how can we be happy if we mourn?

361

:

Well, it's about our perspective and

what we're ultimately living for.

362

:

And that's so much of what he touches

on here in the beatitude section.

363

:

Uh, verses 13 through 16 is

about being salt and light.

364

:

Salty light.

365

:

Yep.

366

:

Salty, light, salt enhances

the flavor of something.

367

:

So a lot of times people talk about

this as a preservative and yes, it is a

368

:

preservative and there's a common grace

element where the church has meant to

369

:

be here as something that God uses to

preserve some morality in the culture.

370

:

Uh, but salt is also to enhance.

371

:

It's supposed to make something

better or more appealing, enhance the

372

:

flavor of something we're supposed to

enhance the flavor of the gospel we're

373

:

supposed to, to make it look good.

374

:

Make Christ look good

to the world around us.

375

:

Through how we live our lives.

376

:

Light is noticeable.

377

:

People are going to see our light

and give glory to our father.

378

:

So the call to be salt and

light there at 13 through 16.

379

:

The law, Matthew five 17 through 20.

380

:

Uh, no is not a Bolishak,

but fulfilled in Christ.

381

:

And so the, the law is not abrogate.

382

:

Abrogated Christ did not come

to say, look, the law is faulty

383

:

and it's wrong and it's bad.

384

:

And I'm here to, to get rid of it.

385

:

No, he came to fulfill it perfectly.

386

:

And that's where he

gets into the statement.

387

:

Look, unless your righteousness exceeds

that of the scribes and Pharisees, you

388

:

will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

389

:

You need the righteousness of the one

that came in, fulfilled the law for you.

390

:

Uh, anger, anger and loss.

391

:

Let's take those two together verses

21 through 30 in this section, he

392

:

says, you've heard it said that.

393

:

And then he talks about anger.

394

:

First.

395

:

Don't be don't, don't commit murder,

but I tell you if you're angry with your

396

:

brother, you're guilty of the same thing.

397

:

And then he goes on and says, you've

heard, it said, do not commit adultery,

398

:

but I tell you, if you lost after a

woman in your heart, you're guilty

399

:

of the same PR talk us through that.

400

:

How is that the same?

401

:

Uh, because no one's being arrested

and tried for murder because they

402

:

get angry with somebody on the road.

403

:

Right.

404

:

I think Jesus is simply making it

clear here that sins that we see as

405

:

external violations actually have

internal violations first and foremost.

406

:

So there are differences in degree

in not in category, you might

407

:

angrily lash out with somebody.

408

:

Um, but before you angrily lash out,

you've actually committed sins, several

409

:

steps before that in your heart.

410

:

So Jesus is warning you.

411

:

Hey, don't think that you're good.

412

:

Just because you didn't act upon the

evil impulses that happened inside.

413

:

He's trying to help you see that

righteousness is necessary from

414

:

the inner most person and then is

reflected on the outward person.

415

:

That's again, to your point, he's

not trying to help us rely on

416

:

our obedience to the law, but the

fact that we need internal change

417

:

in order to fulfill the law.

418

:

Yeah.

419

:

Yeah.

420

:

Which leads to that idea of,

of treating sin seriously and

421

:

realizing it's its roots run deep.

422

:

And that's why.

423

:

Versus 29 through 30 exists there.

424

:

If your right eye causes you to, it causes

you to sin, tear it out and throw it away.

425

:

Cut off your hand is not literal

by the way, but it's, it's saying,

426

:

look, we need to take a radical

approach to sin because sin runs deep.

427

:

And we've got to guard

ourselves against it.

428

:

Versus 31 through 32.

429

:

Then he deals with the subject of divorce

and says here, the, the permission

430

:

that he gives everyone who divorces his

wife, except on the ground of sexual

431

:

immorality, makes her commit adultery.

432

:

And whoever marries a divorced

woman commits adultery.

433

:

Uh, we had this question come up at the,

the, the men's Bible study, Q and a PR.

434

:

Any comments you want to make

on this particular subject?

435

:

Yeah, I guess the one thing that I

think is a really helpful takeaway for

436

:

anybody who's considering this topic.

437

:

Is that our job is not to try

to find all of the loopholes

438

:

and exceptions to the rule.

439

:

And there are people who, who

are trying to helpfully say,

440

:

where do we draw the lines?

441

:

And that's, that's useful.

442

:

You need that because there are

times when you do have to say, okay,

443

:

what are we going to do with this?

444

:

No sin is the corporate here,

sin complexifies, and makes

445

:

them much more difficult.

446

:

Everything that touches it like

cancer, it infects, and it creates

447

:

more problems and it resolves.

448

:

Um, so when you think about divorce,

what we're trying to do is stay

449

:

as close as we can to the, this.

450

:

The spirit of the law to not divorce.

451

:

And if in fact Jesus.

452

:

We'll even say, look, if, if someone

sins against you in this particular way,

453

:

in fact, Paul gives us the, the out.

454

:

Uh, you can divorce someone actually

know Jesus has to take it back.

455

:

Jeez, as you can divorce someone,

if they commit this kind of sin.

456

:

Um, but the ideal is not that you do that.

457

:

It's not, it's not like we're

trying to chomp at the bit and say,

458

:

okay, you, you cross this line.

459

:

I'm outta here.

460

:

Not much better is for us to reconcile and

to again, make the gospel look beautiful,

461

:

to be salt and light, by the way that we

interact, even with our fallen spouses

462

:

who send against us in grievous ways.

463

:

Now, granted there are situations

where this is not going to work out.

464

:

But it says, send it to prom.

465

:

Complexifies.

466

:

It makes much more challenging all these

issues, but the idea here stay married.

467

:

Get married once, stay married

for the rest of your life.

468

:

That's what Jesus wants us to see.

469

:

Exactly.

470

:

In fact, if, if you come in for

counseling, Uh, to our office

471

:

and something has happened

and there's been adultery.

472

:

For example, that's taken place.

473

:

Our first stop is not going to be okay.

474

:

Well, let's write up the.

475

:

Governor's of divorce.

476

:

Yeah, here we go.

477

:

We're going to say, Hey, let's

let's work towards reconciliation.

478

:

To get an attorney on retainer, right?

479

:

Because Jesus even says, this is

permissible only because of the hardness

480

:

of your heart, because Moses granted

this because your, your hearts were hard.

481

:

Uh, yeah.

482

:

Uh, oh, Uh, Matthew 5 30, 3

through 37, do not take an oath.

483

:

Do not swear falsely, but

perform, uh, to the Lord.

484

:

What you have sworn a.

485

:

He says in the end here in verse 37,

I think this is the key takeaway.

486

:

Hey, let your yes.

487

:

Be yes.

488

:

And your no, be no, just be

somebody who is a man or woman

489

:

of his, her, his or her word.

490

:

I like that.

491

:

Um, good advice there for us, for sure.

492

:

Uh, retaliation verses 38 through 42.

493

:

Here's the eye for an eye

and a tooth for tooth.

494

:

Uh, do not resist the one who is evil.

495

:

If one slaps you on the right

sheet, turn the other cheek also.

496

:

Um, Is there a situation, pastor, rod

in which the Christian should defend

497

:

himself though, and not simply surrender.

498

:

Yeah, I think that see,

yeah, this is a big one.

499

:

Um, there are people who well-meaning

believe that you should never

500

:

withstand someone who's evil.

501

:

Who's doing things against, against you.

502

:

I don't think that's the

thrust of this, of this here.

503

:

I'm not sure that that's the case.

504

:

Anyway, my read of this

is personal offenses.

505

:

I don't think he's saying like

someone literally is attacking you.

506

:

Uh, that you're just to

stand there and take it.

507

:

Now you could also say

well, but pastor, rod.

508

:

Jesus actually had that take place.

509

:

He modeled that.

510

:

And I would say yes.

511

:

And that was a purposeful event

for the purposes of saving us.

512

:

I don't know that this is what

he had in mind because later he's

513

:

going to tell us his apostles.

514

:

You know, Hey, having a sword.

515

:

Hey, once enough.

516

:

I mean, don't everyone go buy

a sword, protect yourself.

517

:

Be reasonable.

518

:

We wise.

519

:

Don't get run over.

520

:

Don't just take the bullet to the head

just because it's an opportunity and

521

:

you feel like, oh shit, this is a good

opportunity to show me my faith in Christ.

522

:

I don't, I don't think it's that simple.

523

:

So I do think Christians do.

524

:

Have an opportunity and perhaps even a

responsibility to steward the protection

525

:

of their families or their communities.

526

:

By standing in the gap when

the opportunity arises.

527

:

Uh, we should be the people who

are saying, I want to, I want

528

:

to protect the weak and the

vulnerable men should do that.

529

:

Especially men should do that,

but women can do that too.

530

:

So retaliation here I believe

is with personal offenses,

531

:

someone calls you a bad name.

532

:

They.

533

:

Look over overlook you at

up for a promotion at work

534

:

and they slash your tires.

535

:

Cause they know that you're a Christian.

536

:

Okay.

537

:

I'm going to just, I'm going

to roll with the punches.

538

:

I'm not, I may still try to

get my money for the tire.

539

:

I'm still, I may still try to get some.

540

:

But I'm not going to return evil for evil.

541

:

I think, I think that's

the thrust of your pastor.

542

:

PJ would love to hear your points on that.

543

:

Yeah, I would agree with you.

544

:

Um, Luke 22, 36, he says, but now let

the one who has a money bag, take it.

545

:

And likewise, a knapsack and

let the one who has no sword

546

:

sell his cloak and buy one.

547

:

Jesus is telling his

disciples to do that gear up.

548

:

Yeah.

549

:

You buy a sword, not to be like,

Hey, look at my cool sword.

550

:

And they're like, here's two.

551

:

And he's like, okay, that's enough guys.

552

:

Yeah, don't don't over.

553

:

Don't over-interpret what I'm saying.

554

:

Right?

555

:

So some of you guys being like,

great, I get to go buy another gun.

556

:

Jesus is like, Hey.

557

:

One on the arm.

558

:

Yeah.

559

:

Um, no, I would agree with you.

560

:

I think that's, that's accurate

and, and it kind of gets to that

561

:

righteous indignation, if are in

indignation over a sin is more over the

562

:

personal offense than it is against.

563

:

Uh, the offense against God

then we're, we're not in the

564

:

realm of righteous indignation.

565

:

And I think likewise, if

our desire to, to lash out.

566

:

Is more personal than it is, you

know, desire for, for righteousness

567

:

and justice and holiness.

568

:

Then I think we're in danger as well.

569

:

Yeah.

570

:

I think a lot of Christians

have stumbled over this text.

571

:

It's hard and have taken it in ways that

I think are probably not the intention.

572

:

Not helpful for sure.

573

:

Yeah.

574

:

All right.

575

:

Versus 43 through 48.

576

:

Then we get into loving our

enemies and he calls us to this.

577

:

And, and men, he gives you

this impossible standard.

578

:

I think on the, the tails, the

heels of something that is, is

579

:

really hard to do to love somebody.

580

:

Who hates us.

581

:

He says in verse 48, you

therefore must be perfect as

582

:

your heavenly father is perfect.

583

:

So again, the theme is

continuing that's impossible.

584

:

Jesus saying, yeah, you're right.

585

:

It is impossible.

586

:

Uh, you need an alien righteousness, um,

giving Matthew six one through four, he

587

:

says, Hey, be careful how you're giving.

588

:

Don't give for show.

589

:

Don't let your, your left hand

know what your right hand is doing.

590

:

So even, you know, B try to be.

591

:

Careful with your own motives and

your own heart in this, in, in

592

:

not giving for the wrong reasons.

593

:

Prayer verses five through 15, the

Lord's prayer template we find here

594

:

and how to pray, pray this way.

595

:

It doesn't mean you have

to pray those exact words.

596

:

As some denomination suggests the father's

prayer, our father who art in heaven,

597

:

hallowed be thy name, but rather these

are some good things to be praying for.

598

:

Glorifying God, bringing your

requests before and praying for

599

:

forgiveness for giving other people,

even in prayer before the Lord.

600

:

These are good things to be doing.

601

:

And that's the pro template that

we find here in verses five through

602

:

15 fasting verses 16 through 18.

603

:

We we've talked about this briefly.

604

:

It's not something that we practice

regularly, but it is a good thing.

605

:

He says when you fast.

606

:

And so there is a lot of people said,

does the Bible ever command us to fast?

607

:

Well, it's assumed here by Jesus

that you're going to be doing it.

608

:

In verse 16, fasting can be food.

609

:

It can be anything really that,

that you regularly partaking.

610

:

You're going to say, I'm

going to lay this aside.

611

:

For the purpose of when I desire

it, it's gonna remind me to pray.

612

:

It's going to remind me to bring a

request before the Lord or to worship

613

:

or to give thanks to him for something.

614

:

You should not facet daily Bible podcast.

615

:

Just don't it out.

616

:

Don't do that.

617

:

Yeah.

618

:

That's not a good thing.

619

:

Courage yet to do that.

620

:

So fast.

621

:

Uh, verses 19 through 24, then

reward where your treasure is there.

622

:

Your heart will be also a man can not

live, but love both money and God is

623

:

going to love one and hate the other.

624

:

And so, uh, in, in this section here, we

are reminded that we have to be careful

625

:

about not being materialists, that we

have to make sure that we're storing up

626

:

treasure in heaven, where it matters and

not looking for all of our earthly reward

627

:

to be everything that, that matters to us.

628

:

Uh, anxiety 25, 3 34.

629

:

Uh, it breaks down

basically three points here.

630

:

Number one, God knows your needs.

631

:

Number two, God cares for you.

632

:

And number three, anxiety

doesn't change anything.

633

:

I mean, that's kind of that section.

634

:

It says, God, God knows what you need.

635

:

He cares about you.

636

:

He cares about the birds of the field.

637

:

You're worth more than they are.

638

:

And then finally he says, who of

you by being anxious can change

639

:

anything really at the end of the day.

640

:

And the answer is nobody can.

641

:

So anxiety, they're very similar

to what Paul writes about

642

:

in Philippians chapter four.

643

:

It's almost like Paul

was influenced by Jesus.

644

:

Crazy.

645

:

All right.

646

:

Matthew seven verses

one through six judging.

647

:

Uh, judging here.

648

:

Uh, the whole idea of,

of, Hey, don't judge me.

649

:

You're not supposed to judge

a Bible says don't judge.

650

:

That's not actually what it says.

651

:

It says, do it rightly.

652

:

Uh, we have to do it.

653

:

Rightly we have to do it carefully.

654

:

We have to do it introspectively.

655

:

We have to do it humbly.

656

:

Uh, we have to make sure that

we've dealt with the log in our

657

:

own eyes before we go and deal with

the speck in our brother's eye.

658

:

But notice we are supposed to deal

with the speck in our brother's eye.

659

:

We're not supposed to leave

that alone because, Hey, we

660

:

don't want to judge anybody.

661

:

So I think it's a misnomer for us

to say, uh, Christians don't judge.

662

:

That's not what the call is biblically.

663

:

The call is to judge, rightly to

judge humbly to judge introspectively,

664

:

making sure that we're going out

about it the right way, right.

665

:

Verse five says that you're the first.

666

:

So not only, only take this back

out of your own eyes, but first.

667

:

Assuming that there's a second step, which

is of course, then go to your brother.

668

:

Yeah.

669

:

Yeah.

670

:

Uh, verses seven through 11, then we get

into requesting, requesting bringing our

671

:

request to the Lord and asking for things,

and God is going to give them to us.

672

:

Now we might take that and say, great.

673

:

So that means God's going to give me.

674

:

Everything I want because he's, he's going

to give me all the things that, that I

675

:

asked, just like a father and a child.

676

:

But what's important for us is

to note in verse 11, when he says

677

:

your father who's in heaven gives

good things to those who ask him.

678

:

The thing we have to ask

is who gets to define good.

679

:

And answers God does.

680

:

So we might think in our minds, this

is a good thing that I'm asking God

681

:

for, but in God's mind, he may know

better than we do and realize that

682

:

that's not a good thing for us.

683

:

And so he's not going to give it to us.

684

:

Like, if you went to your dad, when

you were growing up and you wanted.

685

:

A beer when you were five, he's

going to be like, oh yeah, no,

686

:

that's, that's not a good thing.

687

:

I'm not going to give that to you.

688

:

Uh, or if you wanted to eat

candy all day long, right?

689

:

Who didn't, who wasn't

there at some point?

690

:

Yeah.

691

:

We're not going to do that.

692

:

That's not a good thing for

you giving us a glimpse into

693

:

your childhood near and candy.

694

:

Dad, I just need some

parent candy, please.

695

:

And my dad, my dad goes to our church.

696

:

You could ask him, I will ask

them about, that's not accurate.

697

:

We'll see.

698

:

Yeah, I don't want to

be your came to my mind.

699

:

W getting candy.

700

:

Input produces outputs.

701

:

Uh, finally.

702

:

Not finally, but, but close to

verses 12 through 14, do unto others.

703

:

Right?

704

:

Th th do you want to others, what

you would have them do to you?

705

:

The narrow gate in the hard way.

706

:

It's interesting that this is here,

but again, I think similarly to loving

707

:

our enemies, I think so much of the,

the, the paradox of Christianity to do.

708

:

What's not what doesn't come natural,

loving our enemies, doing to others.

709

:

What we would have them do to us.

710

:

Th that that's not natural.

711

:

And so then he goes on to say that the

way is narrow, that leads to eternal life.

712

:

Following this is difficult.

713

:

Um, It's a reminder to us that that is.

714

:

It's many broad as the path

in many or who find it.

715

:

We'll be headed towards destruction.

716

:

So, uh, yeah, just another reminder

there of the difficulty here in,

717

:

uh, in truly following Christ.

718

:

Verses 15 through 20, then we've

talked about this previously, but, but,

719

:

uh, the, the fruit trees and notice

here, he says a healthy tree bears.

720

:

Good fruit.

721

:

Um, there may be times where, where

we are producing bad fruit, and that's

722

:

an indication that there's some, the

lack of health, a lack of wellbeing

723

:

in a spiritually that we need to

examine it, figure out what's going on.

724

:

Versus 21 through 23, uh, the

scariest passage in the Bible.

725

:

Um, aside from the, or along with

the, every word, you will be held

726

:

accountable for it because this is the

passage of Lord, Lord didn't didn't.

727

:

We do all these things and

I will say depart from me.

728

:

I never knew you.

729

:

Uh, nobody wants to hear that.

730

:

And that's caused a lot of questions.

731

:

And how do I know I'm not

going to be that person?

732

:

Well, notice what they do in appealing

to why they should be led into

733

:

heaven, whose work do they appeal to?

734

:

The appeal to their own.

735

:

They say, we did this, we did this, we

did this, we did this didn't we do all

736

:

of these things, what they don't do.

737

:

They don't appeal to the work of Christ

for them on their behalf, which is the

738

:

whole point of the sermon on the Mount.

739

:

That we needed a righteousness

alien to ourselves.

740

:

And so I think as long as we're standing

before the Lord and pointing to Jesus, and

741

:

the only reason I should get into heaven

is because of what he's done for me.

742

:

We're not going to find ourselves

in this position where Jesus

743

:

is saying depart from me.

744

:

I never knew you.

745

:

But because they're appealing to their

own righteousness when really they needed

746

:

the righteousness of Jesus instead.

747

:

Finally the two houses.

748

:

Uh, the two houses here are

basically comes down to what are

749

:

you doing with the word of God?

750

:

When you do hear it, are you

building your house on the sand?

751

:

Are you building the house on the rock?

752

:

The Sant that the house has looked the

exact same from the outside, but the

753

:

difference is seen when the trials come.

754

:

Uh, that the house that stands is the

house built on the word of God on the

755

:

rock of God is the Christian who does.

756

:

Uh, what God has laid

out in the scriptures.

757

:

Yeah.

758

:

And then the sermon ends verses 28

through 29 with a divine mic drop.

759

:

When she's Jesus finished seeing these

things, the crowd were astonished

760

:

at his teaching for his teaching as

one who had authority and not like

761

:

their scraps, PR any oversight,

any comments that you want to.

762

:

Chime in on no, man, this

is, this is dense, thick.

763

:

It's a lot.

764

:

I feel like there's just too,

there's too much good things.

765

:

Like I want to talk about that.

766

:

When I talk about that,

you're gonna appreciate this.

767

:

Uh, I am preaching.

768

:

Yeah.

769

:

So I'm probably going to take it faster

than we have than even what I would

770

:

care for faster than today, even.

771

:

Uh, maybe a little faster today.

772

:

Yeah.

773

:

It's covered all in 10 minutes.

774

:

It's good stuff.

775

:

It is good stuff, man.

776

:

It's good.

777

:

Alright.

778

:

Hey, let's pray.

779

:

And then we will be done.

780

:

God, we, uh, we confess we

needed the alien righteousness.

781

:

We need Christ.

782

:

We need something that we can

produce in and of ourself.

783

:

We can't obey.

784

:

Um, Even part of the sermon on the

Mount, let alone the whole thing.

785

:

And yet Lord guard us from the mentality

that says, okay, so I don't even need to

786

:

try help us to remember that we are still

called a builder house on the rock that we

787

:

are still called to be hearers and doers

of the word and not just hearers only.

788

:

And so give us that, that grace,

that, that ability, that mindset, God.

789

:

And caused us to be more like Jesus.

790

:

As a result of our time in the word

every day, we pray in Jesus name.

791

:

Amen.

792

:

Amen.

793

:

Keep bring your Bibles tune in

again tomorrow for another episode

794

of the daily Bible podcast.
