Shownotes

We're not going to pretend the world isn't a dumpster fire right now. But we can make our chairs a little cozier while we watch it burn.

In this episode, we share a few joy moments—Sara hearing "cool beans" and "awesome sauce" in the wild, community members helping each other out, and the Olympic curling witchcraft that got us through a hard week. Joy isn't about ignoring what's hard. It's about finding support in the small stuff that still feels good.

Lacey:

Hello, welcome to Joy Moments, where we spread moments

2

:

of joy throughout the world.

3

:

I am Lacey, your co-host, who

has a very chatty background

4

:

actor and my daughter Violet.

5

:

So you may hear her chatty, I

don't know if it's the right word

6

:

'cause she's just making noises.

7

:

with my, co-host in co giggling, Sara.

8

:

Hi Sara.

9

:

Sara: Good morning, Lacey.

10

:

yes.

11

:

Behind the scenes we just spent a solid

30 seconds laughing, kind of nothing.

12

:

Lacey: I was laughing at Violet, so.

13

:

Sara: Well, yeah, and then I was

just laughing at myself being,

14

:

I don't wanna say a hot mess,

because I'm not a hot mess.

15

:

I'm perfect, but a comedy of errors.

16

:

I love that phrase.

17

:

Okay.

18

:

Yes.

19

:

I'm so excited to be here.

20

:

Don't you get us started, Lacey.

21

:

Lacey: Just a friendly reminder.

22

:

The joy moments is us sharing

our joy moments, but also getting

23

:

joy moments from other people.

24

:

But something I think is really important,

especially in, the current climate of, of

25

:

our country and our world right now, Sara

and I are in the us is just to note that

26

:

joy moments is not about ignoring the bad.

27

:

So I know we're like two white

ladies coming on here talking about

28

:

joy moments and all that stuff.

29

:

I don't want people to think I.

30

:

We're ignoring the, frankly, atrocities

happening right now in our country and

31

:

injustices in so many different ways.

32

:

'cause that is very much on our

mind and something that Sara

33

:

and I do care very deeply about.

34

:

these are joy moments to help get

us through those times, not to

35

:

distract from or ignore those times.

36

:

Sara: another way to put it is it's

a dumpster fire right now, and we, we

37

:

don't have enough resources to put out

the dumpster fire, but you know what,

38

:

we're gonna sit in a comfortable chair.

39

:

We're gonna pour ourselves

a glass of lemonade.

40

:

And we're not gonna just be

miserable watching the dumpster fire.

41

:

We're gonna bring some joy to the

table, not ignoring it, but just,

42

:

we're not gonna put our hand in

the fire and get burned by it.

43

:

We're gonna, we're gonna make the most

of being surrounded by a dumpster fire.

44

:

Lacey: We see the dumpster fire.

45

:

We, we are, we acknowledge the

dumpster earth fire exists.

46

:

We do not want there

to be a dumpster fire.

47

:

and while it feels like there's

very little that we can do about

48

:

the dumpster fire, I do feel like

we are trying to do what we can.

49

:

And in the meantime, trying

to make a chair cozy to.

50

:

I've seen a lot of stuff lately about,

about like influencers not using their

51

:

platform and I'm like, I don't really

have a platform and I get how people

52

:

could definitely see what we're doing and

be like, those two white ladies are, are

53

:

being apolitical and that kinda stuff.

54

:

And it's like, no, that's

not what's happening here.

55

:

, Please, please, no.

56

:

Okay.

57

:

joy moments today,

58

:

Sara: One of mine from this week

that I posted about on Threads is

59

:

, I met somebody I'd never

met before, and then

60

:

in the course of the

conversation she used two phrases

61

:

that I use all the time, but I never hear.

62

:

Day to day,

63

:

and I was so distracted that I actually

didn't hear the rest of what she

64

:

said

65

:

because I was, I was so

stuck on the phrases.

66

:

First phrase was, cool beans.

67

:

Do you say Cool beans?

68

:

Lacey: Not regularly, but it,

I have certainly said it before

69

:

Sara: Said, cool.

70

:

Lacey: past year,

71

:

Sara: So she said Cool beans to me.

72

:

And then in the same conversation a couple

sentences later, she said, awesome sauce.

73

:

Lacey: Oh, I say awesome sauce.

74

:

I have a group chat named Awesome Sauce.

75

:

Sara: So this person, and it was

kind of a semi-professional setting.

76

:

I didn't hear anything else she said.

77

:

'cause I was like, oh my gosh.

78

:

Somebody else said cool beans and

awesome sauce in the same sitting.

79

:

I thought it was like the

matrix glitching on itself.

80

:

Like I couldn't understand why

I was hearing the words and

81

:

I wasn't the one saying the

82

:

Lacey: Feel like you found a, a, a

counterpart, like individual there.

83

:

Sara: Oh yeah, it was, it was nice.

84

:

It was nice.

85

:

So did you, you said you

did a call out to Threads.

86

:

Do you have some other

87

:

Lacey: I do.

88

:

Said, tell me something good.

89

:

Because remember, joy doesn't necessarily

have to be one specific thing.

90

:

It can be happiness, gratitude,

just anything that brings

91

:

up those good feelings.

92

:

That's what we're, we're,

we're talking about.

93

:

so the first one I got was I was

walking in a store and a young man

94

:

approached me with tears in his

eyes and told me he was hungry.

95

:

had the best time getting

him some groceries.

96

:

He was so happy.

97

:

I wish I could have done

more, but it made my day.

98

:

I gotta be honest, like part of me reads

this and like it's so lovely that I

99

:

don't necessarily feel like it's true.

100

:

I.

101

:

Say that, but it is so like the, it's

the type of thing that we would, we would

102

:

hope, I'll be honest, like I hear that and

like instantly I'm like, would I do that?

103

:

No.

104

:

'cause my, my protect protection instincts

would go up of like, I don't have money.

105

:

No, don't talk to me.

106

:

You know, kind of thing.

107

:

And so when I read that, I'm

like, maybe I should do better.

108

:

I don't know.

109

:

Sara: Well, but this, this

podcast isn't about shoulds.

110

:

It's about,

111

:

Lacey: right,

112

:

Sara: that was her joy moment.

113

:

And it was joy for her doing it.

114

:

It was joy for the person receiving the

food let's just focus on the joy of it.

115

:

Lacey: A joy.

116

:

I'm not gonna analyze.

117

:

See, that's, I, I go into the logic of it.

118

:

Right.

119

:

That that's not, we're

120

:

Sara: No,

121

:

Lacey: These, we're

122

:

Sara: no.

123

:

Lacey: So, and then I

got another one one also.

124

:

Ugh.

125

:

I am a job developer for adults

with developmental disabilities,

126

:

and one of my clients just landed

his dream job, better money, better

127

:

benefits, life-changing experience.

128

:

I'm so proud, I'm gonna cry.

129

:

I'm so proud and overjoy

overjoyed at his success.

130

:

Sara: Oh my gosh.

131

:

Lacey: to make this even better,

Sara, there's a little back and

132

:

forth with someone who's saying,

someone said, this is so awesome.

133

:

Claps.

134

:

The original person said, thank you.

135

:

And then that person said, my son

is 16 and autistic and I'm hoping

136

:

for him to get a job this summer.

137

:

I get it.

138

:

And then the original said, best of luck.

139

:

Counselors might be, able to

help you find the programs here.

140

:

In my state, this is how we

transition to work and there's some

141

:

awesome support should be able.

142

:

So not only did they share the joy,

but there also was like this back and

143

:

forth of joy, but then also potential

support in linking to resources.

144

:

I mean.

145

:

Sara: That is, yeah, that is, it's,

it's a introduction of joy and that's

146

:

why we do this because by that person

highlighting that joy, it inspired

147

:

and gave hope to somebody else.

148

:

So if you're like, why are we doing

joy moments because of that, because.

149

:

It's like a, it's like that holding

up that light for people to be

150

:

like, oh my gosh, there are these

amazing things, these joyful things.

151

:

Right?

152

:

And yeah, that makes me happy.

153

:

Lacey: Me too.

154

:

Me too.

155

:

Now you know why?

156

:

I was like, I got some good ones.

157

:

Sara: In the whole reminding

people that this isn't about

158

:

ignoring the discomfort in life.

159

:

If you've read the newsletter from

this past week, I have been couch

160

:

ridden for about five days with pain.

161

:

and I say that just because it's

like, but there was still joy.

162

:

Like, I, I don't, I don't

wanna be in pain like.

163

:

That was not great, but there was joy.

164

:

My dog snuggled like nobody's business.

165

:

I mean like she, like she

was a professional snuggler.

166

:

And then I love the Olympics and I've

been getting to binge the Olympics

167

:

and I researched so many curling

terms yesterday and I learned about.

168

:

The pin and the house and the like.

169

:

I learned all these things and there's

still more to learn, but, I really

170

:

enjoyed the Olympics in a very deep

way and I'm still enjoying them.

171

:

I was watching them before I came

up here, so Olympics is my joy.

172

:

Lacey: I do wanna say, you asked

me about it and you're like,

173

:

are you an Olympics person?

174

:

And I was like, ah, I just

really default to summer.

175

:

But I did see something yesterday

that was like, the summer Olympics

176

:

is like, Hey, run from here to there.

177

:

Whereas Winter Olympics is like,

let's, let's attach these sticks to

178

:

your legs, make a random hill, and

then you've gotta do flips off of it.

179

:

You know what I mean?

180

:

I'm just like, maybe, maybe

that's my disconnect of like,

181

:

holy moly, that's just so bananas.

182

:

So I think, I am gonna, I'm gonna try to,

turn it on a little bit more, especially

183

:

'cause Isaac has expressed interest.

184

:

and, and really give it, its dup because

dag on some of these things, holy moly.

185

:

Sara: And these people.

186

:

I was watching ice skating

yesterday and I just thought

187

:

this might as well be witchcraft.

188

:

I can't even stand on ice skates.

189

:

I can't even stand and the things these

people are doing, I mean, that's just,

190

:

that's just straight up voodoo stuff.

191

:

I don't remember how we end things.

192

:

Lacey: I don't either.

193

:

Oh.

194

:

anyone can submit their own joy moment.

195

:

if you go to joy movement

com back slash submit.

196

:

you can put your own joy moment there.

197

:

You can always just

email or DM or comment.

198

:

we're, we're up pulling 'em in

199

:

Sara: Host, just put it

on threads and we'll find.

200

:

We'll, we'll find.

201

:

We're gonna find your joy.

202

:

Lacey: Calm down.

203

:

yeah, we hope, in the garbage

dumpster fire of our world.

204

:

This at least made your chair

a little bit more comfy.

205

:

Thank you, Sara.

206

:

Sara: Thank you, Lacey.
