Speaker:

What's your expiry date?

Speaker:

Yeah, like seriously...

Speaker:

Isn't that how society has planned it for us?

Speaker:

That we're going to reach a certain age...

Speaker:

A stage...

Speaker:

Expiry date...

Speaker:

Where...

Speaker:

We're supposed to just go gently into that sweet night, of obsolescence.

Speaker:

As a woman in your 60s, or 70s...

Speaker:

A retirement...

Speaker:

A family raised...

Speaker:

Mortgage paid off...

Speaker:

Career...

Speaker:

The last hurrah...

Speaker:

and...

Speaker:

You're just supposed to expire, without an odour of course...

Speaker:

Because...

Speaker:

What value would we have?...

Speaker:

At this age, in our life?

Speaker:

Well, that maybe sounds a little dramatic and harsh...

Speaker:

But, it's kind of the stereotype, or the programming, that I was raised with...

Speaker:

And didn't think much beyond that.

Speaker:

And I confess...

Speaker:

I was as guilty as the next person, judging me...

Speaker:

That I judged older women.

Speaker:

As I was growing up...

Speaker:

As I was maturing...

Speaker:

To be, unnecessary, unimpactful, sometimes inconvenient...

Speaker:

Or sometimes just convenient...

Speaker:

Because they were there...

Speaker:

They were steady, and they were available for babysitting

Speaker:

and asking quick questions.

Speaker:

I wrote an article sometime back...

Speaker:

Just about that..

Speaker:

About...

Speaker:

Is there a point of obsolescence?...

Speaker:

Where...

Speaker:

We as baby boomers...

Speaker:

Cease to have any real value to society?...

Speaker:

To business, to family and friends around us?

Speaker:

Our children are adults, with very full lives of their own.

Speaker:

For many of us, the grandchildren have already reached the age of independence...

Speaker:

And they don't need dear sweet granny to read them a bedtime story.

Speaker:

In our relationships, sometimes we just aren't even needed anymore either.

Speaker:

Everyone's gone off...

Speaker:

To start their own quest in life.

Speaker:

Well, even though I grew up with that Freedom 55...

Speaker:

Carrot in my brain...

Speaker:

I grew up in Canada...

Speaker:

and it was a London Life commercial that set me up...

Speaker:

To go...

Speaker:

Wow, I will have lived a terrifically successful life...

Speaker:

If at the age of 55, I can retire from making any income, gainful employment...

Speaker:

Live on the savings and the assets that I have accumulated

Speaker:

over this wildly successful...

Speaker:

Baby Boomer lifestyle that complied with...

Speaker:

All of the...

Speaker:

You know...

Speaker:

Go to School...

Speaker:

Get a job, Get married and Buy a House...

Speaker:

Have some kids, pay off the mortgage...

Speaker:

et cetera...

Speaker:

Plan...

Speaker:

Right to the edge of the cliff...

Speaker:

When..

Speaker:

In your late 50s and early 60s, starting to fade from

Speaker:

everybody else's radar screens...

Speaker:

Companies...

Speaker:

Up until recently, and probably many, many, still...

Speaker:

Were anxiously walking us to the door to get rid of us...

Speaker:

Before we died in the traces...

Speaker:

Or, that we cost too much money on the health care plan because

Speaker:

of our deteriorating condition...

Speaker:

At our ripe old age.

Speaker:

Let's turn off that show, and take a look at the reality of today.

Speaker:

My circumstances as a serial entrepreneur, and a business owner...

Speaker:

Led me to sell my company in 2009, and take a whole new journey in my life...

Speaker:

I took a chance on love again...

Speaker:

I sold my home and possessions in Canada.

Speaker:

I moved to the United States, and tried the woman of leisure lifestyle.

Speaker:

After all I earned it.

Speaker:

I'd earned it the hard way.

Speaker:

I'd had my own company for over 20 years.

Speaker:

There was a lot of blood, sweat, and tears in making payroll and

Speaker:

dealing with economic disasters...

Speaker:

Conditions outside of my control, and learning how to be a CEO on the job...

Speaker:

On the job training for sure!

Speaker:

Well, I tried that...

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

I deserve this....

Speaker:

And after all...

Speaker:

That's what they said I was supposed to do.

Speaker:

I was over 55...

Speaker:

and it was time to slow down...

Speaker:

Enjoy the fruits of my lifelong labor.

Speaker:

After all, I've been working since I was 12 years old, and really just...

Speaker:

Step back, and give someone else the opportunity to step

Speaker:

forward, and rise in my place.

Speaker:

I tried that for a while...

Speaker:

Rather than feeling the joy...

Speaker:

And experiencing that beautiful life...

Speaker:

That the television commercials from Freedom 55 had portrayed...

Speaker:

You know...

Speaker:

The lovely couple with the silver hair, with the Polo

Speaker:

sweaters over their shoulders...

Speaker:

Walking hand in hand, on the beach...

Speaker:

Or...

Speaker:

Riding together in a golf cart.

Speaker:

I found that all of that was possible, and available to me...

Speaker:

But it wasn't enough...

Speaker:

It wasn't enough to make me feel great about who I was...

Speaker:

And what my purpose and value was.

Speaker:

Now, at this different stage of my life, for a long time...

Speaker:

I fought my true feelings because...

Speaker:

I had convinced myself, that that was, the role I was supposed to play.

Speaker:

And if I didn't have to work...

Speaker:

Then obviously...

Speaker:

What kind of an idiot was I to say...

Speaker:

Hey, let me try something new...

Speaker:

Let me take on a challenge.

Speaker:

Let me take on risk.

Speaker:

Let me face the fear of personal growth, and learning new

Speaker:

skills and, deciding how...

Speaker:

I wanted to make an influence now...

Speaker:

How I would be able to have positive impact.

Speaker:

All of that remained unanswered for me, for a couple of years...

Speaker:

Until I realized that my search to find those answers...

Speaker:

Wouldn't be satisfied until I answered one other, much more critical question first.

Speaker:

And that was...

Speaker:

Who Am I Now?

Speaker:

Rather than trying to conduct my life and planning...

Speaker:

Based on who I was attached to...

Speaker:

The identity who I was attached to...

Speaker:

That I was quite comfortable with for many years.

Speaker:

And I knew exactly what my place was in the world, and my role.

Speaker:

Well, it was really easy...

Speaker:

I had a business card that told me...

Speaker:

Exactly...

Speaker:

Who I was.

Speaker:

I had to really stop and look in the mirror...

Speaker:

Look deeply into my own eyes, and ask that question...

Speaker:

Who Am I Now?

Speaker:

It was a very emotional process.

Speaker:

And you all know already that I have an affinity for words

Speaker:

that start with the letter E...

Speaker:

And so...

Speaker:

Expiry, and Emotional, and Evolutionary...

Speaker:

We're all part of this conversation...

Speaker:

In how do we...

Speaker:

Make that transition...

Speaker:

From who we were...

Speaker:

To who we will become...

Speaker:

And...

Speaker:

How do we traverse that unknown area in between?

Speaker:

I certainly was not prepared for that experience in my life.

Speaker:

I didn't give a single moments thought to...

Speaker:

What will I do?...

Speaker:

When I am not who I was?

Speaker:

What will matter to me?

Speaker:

What will I have to Learn?

Speaker:

Decide?

Speaker:

Choose?...

Speaker:

What skills do I have?...

Speaker:

That transition into...

Speaker:

What I want to do next?

Speaker:

How important is it to me to...

Speaker:

Slow down?

Speaker:

Or speed up?

Speaker:

Because now...

Speaker:

Really, if I give myself permission...

Speaker:

I have the freedom to do anything I want to.

Speaker:

Another huge part of that assessment or evaluation was...

Speaker:

Who do I need to have on my cast and crew?...

Speaker:

To help me fulfill the script that I can write for myself?...

Speaker:

To produce what I call an Encore performance in my life.

Speaker:

I feel absolutely no regrets for the life that I had and the things that

Speaker:

I've experienced and accomplished...

Speaker:

Or failed forward...

Speaker:

Very quickly or slowly.

Speaker:

But here I am now, at this point...

Speaker:

Going all right...

Speaker:

How do I figure out...

Speaker:

What needs to happen?

Speaker:

What's the system?

Speaker:

What's the process?

Speaker:

And how do I execute that?

Speaker:

I wrote a book called, Who Am I Now?: Feminine

Speaker:

Wisdom - Unmasked and Uncensored.

Speaker:

And it really talks about...

Speaker:

That lifetime journey of getting to be...

Speaker:

Me...

Speaker:

At that point, age 65.

Speaker:

But the sequel...

Speaker:

to that...

Speaker:

The unwritten sequel to that...

Speaker:

Is this journey I am on now...

Speaker:

To really appreciate everything that I am, and have been leading

Speaker:

my life in preparation to be...

Speaker:

Today...

Speaker:

And what I choose to do with that going forward.

Speaker:

Part of the conversation I'd like to continue with you...

Speaker:

And with guests on my show.

Speaker:

Over the past 10 years, I've talked to other women...

Speaker:

And I found out...

Speaker:

That there was absolutely no reason for me to be hiding in shame, and suffering from

Speaker:

this identity crisis that I was having...

Speaker:

Because I was not alone...

Speaker:

At any time.

Speaker:

Hell no...

Speaker:

Not alone because there are millions of baby boomers that are at this juncture....

Speaker:

That are going...

Speaker:

Okay...

Speaker:

What now???

Speaker:

Because we certainly didn't think that much farther ahead.

Speaker:

There was just this...

Speaker:

False belief that we're just going to go off the cliff...

Speaker:

When we reach a certain point.

Speaker:

There's far too much life to be lived yet.

Speaker:

I'm now 66...

Speaker:

I expect that I will live at least another 25, 35, 45 more years...

Speaker:

What will I do to fill that time?

Speaker:

What will I do to make sure that I have enough money to live the

Speaker:

way that I want to live, and to be able to do the things I want to do?

Speaker:

These are the conversations that I would like to have with you.

Speaker:

And with the women that I have come to know...

Speaker:

That are out there...

Speaker:

Busting up those stereotypes and paradigms...

Speaker:

They are transforming themselves...

Speaker:

Starring in their lives...

Speaker:

Doing something that maybe they never ever thought they would

Speaker:

do that would happen because...

Speaker:

For a lot of our lives, I don't know about you...

Speaker:

But certainly for me and many of my friends...

Speaker:

We kind of fell into our careers, or we were directed, and suggested

Speaker:

and pushed or obligated...

Speaker:

Or it just got too hard to leave that predictable income.

Speaker:

On the day that you are set free...

Speaker:

From that sense of obligation and sense of being parked there?...

Speaker:

Maybe...

Speaker:

typecast?...

Speaker:

In your role?...

Speaker:

To where you can freely say...

Speaker:

Hmmm...

Speaker:

I get to decide...

Speaker:

How I want to show up in the world now.

Speaker:

What my character is truly like.

Speaker:

Authentically...

Speaker:

Who am I now...

Speaker:

Based on this evolutionary journey of...

Speaker:

5, 6, 7 decades, that we have lived on this planet.

Speaker:

So please, I'd like to hear from you.

Speaker:

What are you thinking about...

Speaker:

Your Encore?...

Speaker:

What you want to do next in life...

Speaker:

How are you getting through that process of deciding...

Speaker:

What that's going to be like...

Speaker:

How you will produce and direct that successful Encore?

Speaker:

I am delighted to be on this journey with you.

Speaker:

I will be even happier to give you a standing ovation...

Speaker:

For figuring out your Encore, and starring in it!
