Genuine Joy Is Countercultural: Your Friday Reset for Parents of LGBTQ Kids
Episode 295 •
10th July 2026 • More Human. More Kind. | Parenting LGBTQ Kids, Unlearning Fear, Becoming More Human • Heather Hester | Advocate for Parents of LGBTQ Teens
Real joy doesn't come from a feed. This week's reset will help you find it, feel it, and help your kid do the same.
In Tuesday's episode, we explored what queer creators are teaching our kids about authentic joy and identity. Today Heather brings it home with your Friday Butterfly Effect, one small shift designed to create a meaningful ripple in your week and in your relationship with your LGBTQ kid.
In this episode you'll learn how to:
* Use this week's word, genuine, to notice the difference between performed and authentic joy in yourself and your kid
* Take one tiny action that opens a real conversation with your teen about who they follow and why it matters to them
* Practice a micro-rebellion that brings joy back to where it belongs, inside you, not on a screen
Press play for your Friday reset, and carry something real into the weekend.

Speaker A:
On Tuesday, we talked about your kids online world.
Speaker A:
The creators they follow, the joy those creators model and what your kid is actually learning from all of it.
Speaker A:
And underneath all of that was one quiet bread.
Speaker A:
The most lasting joy for our kids and for us comes from within.
Speaker A:
Not from a steed, not from a following, not from external validation from inside.
Speaker A:
That is a lesson worth sitting with for a moment before we let the weekend arrive.
Speaker B:
Welcome to More Human, More Kind, the podcast for parents of LGBTQ kids and anyone trying to stay human in a world that keeps hardening.
Speaker B:
I'm Heather Hester and here here we talk about fear, belonging, boundaries, courage, love and what it means to protect what matters without losing yourself in the process.
Speaker B:
Your child doesn't just need a parent who's informed.
Speaker B:
They need a parent who is grounded and strong.
Speaker B:
Let's take a breath and let's begin.
Speaker A:
Most of us were not taught to locate joy inside ourselves.
Speaker A:
We were taught that we had to earn it, to achieve it, to find it in what other people thought of us and what we accomplished and how we looked doing it.
Speaker A:
And then we handed our kids a device that runs on external validation times a thousand likes.
Speaker A:
Dusk Followers Comments that dopamine hit is real and it is fast.
Speaker B:
And it is designed to keep them coming back.
Speaker A:
This is why queer creators who have figured out how to build joy from the inside are so remarkable.
Speaker A:
They are doing something countercultural.
Speaker A:
They are showing that the most magnetic thing you can be is genuinely yourself, not a performance of yourself.
Speaker A:
You.
Speaker A:
That is the model worth pointing your kid toward.
Speaker A:
And honestly, it's worth practicing ourselves.
Speaker A:
So this is your Friday reset.
Speaker A:
One small shift that can create a meaningful ripple.
Speaker A:
This week's word of the week is genuine.
Speaker A:
Tuck this one in the back of your mind this week.
Speaker A:
Not perfect, not polished, not impressive.
Speaker A:
Genuine.
Speaker A:
When you notice joy this week, whether it's in yourself, in your kid, and someone online, ask does this feel genuine?
Speaker A:
Does it seem to come from somewhere real?
Speaker A:
That small question will teach you more than any algorithm ever could.
Speaker A:
Your tiny action this week is to ask your kid about one person they follow.
Speaker A:
Not to evaluate them, not to monitor it.
Speaker A:
Just to know.
Speaker A:
Just to be curious.
Speaker A:
You can say something like, I keep hearing you mention this person.
Speaker A:
Tell me what you love about them and then just listen.
Speaker A:
Let them teach you something.
Speaker A:
That's the whole action.
Speaker A:
It's small and it matters enormously.
Speaker A:
Your micro rebellion this week is this.
Speaker A:
I will find one moment of genuine joy today and I will not forget post it.
Speaker A:
I will just feel it fully without documenting it or sharing it or making it into content.
Speaker A:
Let joy exist just for you, even for a moment.
Speaker A:
That is a Radical act in:
Speaker A:
And if you need a line to steal, do you need something to come back to this week?
Speaker A:
This is it.
Speaker A:
The most magnetic thing you can be is genuinely yourself.
Speaker A:
The most magnetic thing you can be is genuinely yourself.
Speaker A:
Say it to yourself, say it to your kid, say it to every person that you love.
Speaker A:
And then let it do its work.
Speaker A:
Thanks for hanging out with me here today.
Speaker A:
Go find something genuinely joyful this weekend and just soak it in.
Speaker A:
Let it be enough.
Speaker A:
I'll see you next Tuesday.
Speaker A:
Until then, keep choosing to be a little more human and a little more kind.
