Lindsey Helman: Hello and welcome to Financial Perspectives, a CFA Society San
Speaker:Lindsey Helman: Francisco podcast, where we interview and discuss trends
Speaker:Lindsey Helman: with leaders from across the investment and finance industry.
Speaker:Lindsey Helman: This month, our host Tanya
Speaker:Lindsey Helman: Suba-Tang, membership director
Speaker:Lindsey Helman: with CFA Society San Francisco,
Speaker:Lindsey Helman: had the pleasure of speaking
Speaker:Lindsey Helman: with Asad Malik, CFA, head of
Speaker:Lindsey Helman: Machine learning Finance and
Speaker:Lindsey Helman: infrastructure strategy at
Speaker:Lindsey Helman: Google.
Speaker:Lindsey Helman: Listen in as they discuss what investors should know about the
Speaker:Lindsey Helman: AI boom and the future of machine learning finance.
Speaker:Tanya Tang: Good morning Asad, how are you?
Speaker:Asad Malik: Good morning Tanya. I'm good.
Speaker:Asad Malik: How are you?
Speaker:Tanya Tang: I'm great.
Speaker:Tanya Tang: Thank you so much for joining me at today's podcast episode.
Speaker:Tanya Tang: I'm very excited to have our conversation started.
Speaker:Tanya Tang: And because we're talking about something that I think it's more
Speaker:Tanya Tang: than a buzzword now.
Speaker:Tanya Tang: ML and AI, right?
Speaker:Tanya Tang: It's been going on for quite some time, but we're going to
Speaker:Tanya Tang: take a different approach and perspective about it.
Speaker:Tanya Tang: And you know, with your background as leading ML finance
Speaker:Tanya Tang: strategy for Google, who better to talk to than you about it?
Speaker:Asad Malik: Tanya, first of all, thank.
Speaker:Asad Malik: You for having me on your Financial Perspectives podcast.
Speaker:Asad Malik: And I'm I hope I can share some personal views that will help
Speaker:Asad Malik: our listeners think about all the recent ML funds.
Speaker:Asad Malik: So it's super exciting to be here.
Speaker:Tanya Tang: Great.
Speaker:Tanya Tang: So let's start a little bit of a background.
Speaker:Tanya Tang: You know, when we were talking before the podcast, you had
Speaker:Tanya Tang: mentioned significant changes in AI and ML investment trends
Speaker:Tanya Tang: since twenty twenty two.
Speaker:Tanya Tang: Wow.
Speaker:Tanya Tang: So long ago.
Speaker:Tanya Tang: could you share a bit more about
Speaker:Tanya Tang: what you think is driving these
Speaker:Tanya Tang: changes?
Speaker:Asad Malik: Yeah.
Speaker:Asad Malik: For sure.
Speaker:Asad Malik: It feels like yesterday, to be honest.
Speaker:Asad Malik: It's moved so fast.
Speaker:Asad Malik: I mean, AI research, it's been advancing for decades, but I
Speaker:Asad Malik: think the big bang moment was really in late twenty twenty
Speaker:Asad Malik: two, when millions of people got their hands on some of the most
Speaker:Asad Malik: powerful large language models.
Speaker:Asad Malik: Right?
Speaker:Asad Malik: And maybe it was a pandemic that locked us down and we just
Speaker:Asad Malik: needed someone to talk to.
Speaker:Asad Malik: But with AI chatbots, you could
Speaker:Asad Malik: ask questions the way you would
Speaker:Asad Malik: with a human on the other end,
Speaker:Asad Malik: and you'd get these detailed
Speaker:Asad Malik: responses on any range of
Speaker:Asad Malik: topics.
Speaker:Asad Malik: even the flow of information,
Speaker:Asad Malik: the way you, had this back and
Speaker:Asad Malik: forth dialogue.
Speaker:Asad Malik: It was the same way as if you were interacting with an expert.
Speaker:Asad Malik: And then you have image
Speaker:Asad Malik: generation and now video
Speaker:Asad Malik: generation, which has only
Speaker:Asad Malik: further captured our
Speaker:Asad Malik: imagination.
Speaker:Asad Malik: Like if you wanted a visual or a clip of something, you could
Speaker:Asad Malik: just create it in an incredibly short amount of time.
Speaker:Asad Malik: And so that massive public
Speaker:Asad Malik: interest, it's really sparked
Speaker:Asad Malik: this surge of investments in
Speaker:Asad Malik: this area.
Speaker:Asad Malik: And it's only grown since then.
Speaker:Asad Malik: So the early chatbots, they were
Speaker:Asad Malik: very cool, but you could still
Speaker:Asad Malik: see flaws in the quality of the
Speaker:Asad Malik: responses.
Speaker:Asad Malik: Right.
Speaker:Asad Malik: And in some cases you were getting answers that were just
Speaker:Asad Malik: flat out wrong.
Speaker:Asad Malik: But there was and there still is a strong belief in scaling laws
Speaker:Asad Malik: that if you made the models larger, more complex, and you
Speaker:Asad Malik: invested more in the computational power behind them,
Speaker:Asad Malik: you could create an even better model, something that was more
Speaker:Asad Malik: accurate and helpful.
Speaker:Asad Malik: And so you take that belief in
Speaker:Asad Malik: scaling laws with some notion of
Speaker:Asad Malik: monetization at the end of the
Speaker:Asad Malik: rainbow, and you get billions of
Speaker:Asad Malik: dollars now being poured into
Speaker:Asad Malik: this industry.
Speaker:Tanya Tang: So I'd love to get your thoughts
Speaker:Tanya Tang: on all the funding going on into
Speaker:Tanya Tang: this industry.
Speaker:Tanya Tang: And, you know, what are the
Speaker:Tanya Tang: areas investors should keep an
Speaker:Tanya Tang: eye on?
Speaker:Asad Malik: Yeah, that's.
Speaker:Asad Malik: Actually a really important question.
Speaker:Asad Malik: I mean, we talked about scaling laws.
Speaker:Asad Malik: you need to grow compute
Speaker:Asad Malik: infrastructure to improve large
Speaker:Asad Malik: language models and create more
Speaker:Asad Malik: helpful products.
Speaker:Asad Malik: So that's number one.
Speaker:Asad Malik: Number two, you also need
Speaker:Asad Malik: investments in infrastructure to
Speaker:Asad Malik: serve those products to the
Speaker:Asad Malik: consumers, right.
Speaker:Asad Malik: This is the capacity you need to
Speaker:Asad Malik: bring that model to billions of
Speaker:Asad Malik: users.
Speaker:Asad Malik: And then number three, you need the talent to implement all this
Speaker:Asad Malik: and drive progress.
Speaker:Asad Malik: So when you add all those three
Speaker:Asad Malik: up you get these really
Speaker:Asad Malik: expensive builds.
Speaker:Asad Malik: And I think the industry as a whole is likely spending around
Speaker:Asad Malik: four x this year than what it did back in twenty twenty three.
Speaker:Asad Malik: Building all this infrastructure also takes time.
Speaker:Asad Malik: So the investments in growth you
Speaker:Asad Malik: see today are still constrained
Speaker:Asad Malik: since the demand showed up
Speaker:Asad Malik: yesterday.
Speaker:Asad Malik: But you can tell from the large
Speaker:Asad Malik: project and some of the deal
Speaker:Asad Malik: announcements that this is only
Speaker:Asad Malik: going to continue growing in the
Speaker:Asad Malik: future.
Speaker:Asad Malik: Another area for investors to
Speaker:Asad Malik: observe, I think, is that the
Speaker:Asad Malik: leading companies in this field,
Speaker:Asad Malik: at different stages of the AI
Speaker:Asad Malik: economic chain, they're trying
Speaker:Asad Malik: to become more vertically
Speaker:Asad Malik: integrated.
Speaker:Asad Malik: So some are already there, but basically it means that you own
Speaker:Asad Malik: the infrastructure, the chip development, the research and
Speaker:Asad Malik: the end products.
Speaker:Asad Malik: That's a very important way of integration that helps you drive
Speaker:Asad Malik: efficiencies at scale.
Speaker:Asad Malik: So given all these billions of investments, the expectations
Speaker:Asad Malik: from the industry are certainly very, very high.
Speaker:Asad Malik: And so this is my view.
Speaker:Asad Malik: And I'm borrowing from leaders from the industry that are much
Speaker:Asad Malik: more knowledgeable about this than I am.
Speaker:Asad Malik: But I think AI is probably overhyped in the near term and
Speaker:Asad Malik: significantly underappreciated in the long term.
Speaker:Asad Malik: Right?
Speaker:Asad Malik: Like the model improvement, the product development, and more
Speaker:Asad Malik: importantly, just adoption within the industry and
Speaker:Asad Malik: consumers, it will take time.
Speaker:Asad Malik: But all that said, I think AI is
Speaker:Asad Malik: still one of the most
Speaker:Asad Malik: significant transformations of
Speaker:Asad Malik: our lifetime.
Speaker:Asad Malik: There's a lot to be excited about.
Speaker:Asad Malik: And so for investors, you really
Speaker:Asad Malik: have to strike that balance
Speaker:Asad Malik: between being bold but also
Speaker:Asad Malik: responsible.
Speaker:Tanya Tang: I appreciate all that feedback.
Speaker:Tanya Tang: I totally agree with you.
Speaker:Tanya Tang: And I could see exactly where you're coming from.
Speaker:Tanya Tang: you know, in your opinion, what
Speaker:Tanya Tang: are some of the most promising
Speaker:Tanya Tang: products currently being
Speaker:Tanya Tang: developed in the AI space that
Speaker:Tanya Tang: you could see Reshape
Speaker:Tanya Tang: industries?
Speaker:Asad Malik: Yeah, there's a lot of promising
Speaker:Asad Malik: products being developed at the
Speaker:Asad Malik: moment, and I think some of the
Speaker:Asad Malik: most exciting ones, in my
Speaker:Asad Malik: opinion, are really in number
Speaker:Asad Malik: one drug discovery, number two
Speaker:Asad Malik: in automation.
Speaker:Asad Malik: And number three, I would say general productivity.
Speaker:Asad Malik: So if you look at drug discovery, the process today
Speaker:Asad Malik: relies heavily on lab experiments like these can take
Speaker:Asad Malik: over a decade and about three billion dollars on average to
Speaker:Asad Malik: bring a new drug to the market.
Speaker:Asad Malik: AI could accelerate that by ten x, and that's very exciting.
Speaker:Asad Malik: And you can expand that to
Speaker:Asad Malik: general scientific research as
Speaker:Asad Malik: well, like the amount of PhD
Speaker:Asad Malik: hours it takes to make
Speaker:Asad Malik: breakthroughs could be
Speaker:Asad Malik: dramatically reduced.
Speaker:Asad Malik: And the outcomes for that for the industry and also humanity
Speaker:Asad Malik: as a whole are just incredible.
Speaker:Asad Malik: Number two, I would say automation.
Speaker:Asad Malik: So you have these predictive models and there are a range of
Speaker:Asad Malik: industries that will benefit from these models that improve
Speaker:Asad Malik: automation and drive significant change in processes.
Speaker:Asad Malik: So, for example, being able to forecast customer demand, being
Speaker:Asad Malik: able to predict when things will fail, improve quality control,
Speaker:Asad Malik: detect fraud and so much more.
Speaker:Asad Malik: I think this is going to hugely
Speaker:Asad Malik: revamp how a lot of industries
Speaker:Asad Malik: think about their operations
Speaker:Asad Malik: today.
Speaker:Asad Malik: And number three, I would say general productivity.
Speaker:Asad Malik: So writing code, creating
Speaker:Asad Malik: spreadsheets, putting together
Speaker:Asad Malik: presentations.
Speaker:Asad Malik: There's so much time that goes into that.
Speaker:Asad Malik: You have a rough idea of the output you're looking for, but
Speaker:Asad Malik: you need to go through steps of one to one hundred to get there.
Speaker:Asad Malik: So having AI that can help you skip most of those basic steps
Speaker:Asad Malik: involved is really going to unlock a lot of our time that we
Speaker:Asad Malik: can spend thinking more about the analysis or the end product.
Speaker:Asad Malik: And so there's a lot more that I haven't covered, but these are
Speaker:Asad Malik: some of the most important ones from my perspective.
Speaker:Tanya Tang: I think that's a really fantastic feedback.
Speaker:Tanya Tang: you know, these are great
Speaker:Tanya Tang: sectors to really look at and
Speaker:Tanya Tang: and see what how AI can kind of
Speaker:Tanya Tang: help, as you said, accelerate
Speaker:Tanya Tang: things.
Speaker:Tanya Tang: and, you know, AI has been
Speaker:Tanya Tang: around for quite some time, as
Speaker:Tanya Tang: we said in this podcast, but
Speaker:Tanya Tang: there's still some hesitancy
Speaker:Tanya Tang: from a lot of people in the
Speaker:Tanya Tang: public, whether in the industry
Speaker:Tanya Tang: or outside.
Speaker:Tanya Tang: What advice would you give,
Speaker:Tanya Tang: whether students or
Speaker:Tanya Tang: professionals who are listening
Speaker:Tanya Tang: in and are still hesitant to
Speaker:Tanya Tang: incorporate AI into their daily
Speaker:Tanya Tang: work routines?
Speaker:Tanya Tang: And really, how how do you get started?
Speaker:Asad Malik: Yeah, it's funny you say that
Speaker:Asad Malik: because I would put myself in
Speaker:Asad Malik: the hesitant professional
Speaker:Asad Malik: category.
Speaker:Asad Malik: Um, I'm still learning how to make the most of these new
Speaker:Asad Malik: available tools as well.
Speaker:Asad Malik: But I think it starts with intention and curiosity.
Speaker:Asad Malik: You have to ask yourself, is
Speaker:Asad Malik: there any part of what I'm doing
Speaker:Asad Malik: right now that could be done
Speaker:Asad Malik: with AI?
Speaker:Asad Malik: Maybe if you have a sibling or
Speaker:Asad Malik: your new manager with a team now
Speaker:Asad Malik: reporting to you, this will
Speaker:Asad Malik: sound familiar, but you almost
Speaker:Asad Malik: have to retrain yourself to
Speaker:Asad Malik: think from a perspective of hey,
Speaker:Asad Malik: what can I delegate and get done
Speaker:Asad Malik: for me?
Speaker:Asad Malik: So yes, I could pull this presentation together, but can I
Speaker:Asad Malik: get AI to do it for me?
Speaker:Asad Malik: I could read through all these reports, but can I get AI to
Speaker:Asad Malik: summarize and maybe help me focus on the most important
Speaker:Asad Malik: parts of it.
Speaker:Asad Malik: And I would say really try out all the available products, see
Speaker:Asad Malik: what works for you.
Speaker:Asad Malik: So that said, I still think it's
Speaker:Asad Malik: incredibly important for
Speaker:Asad Malik: students and professionals to
Speaker:Asad Malik: develop their underlying core
Speaker:Asad Malik: skills, right?
Speaker:Asad Malik: Like, if you don't know how to code or create a research report
Speaker:Asad Malik: and so on, it'll be hard for you to understand what kind of
Speaker:Asad Malik: outputs you're getting from AI and how to best filter those for
Speaker:Asad Malik: the final product.
Speaker:Asad Malik: I'd also recommend caution on AI outputs.
Speaker:Asad Malik: It's important to continue sense checking.
Speaker:Asad Malik: You want to think critically
Speaker:Asad Malik: about the answers that you're
Speaker:Asad Malik: getting.
Speaker:Asad Malik: But I think at the end of the day, really think of AI as a
Speaker:Asad Malik: powerful productivity boost and intentionally find areas to
Speaker:Asad Malik: leverage it and free up your time and bandwidth.
Speaker:Tanya Tang: Those are really some great feedback and thank you so much
Speaker:Tanya Tang: Asad for your time.
Speaker:Tanya Tang: I know it's been a very busy
Speaker:Tanya Tang: time for you personally, so I
Speaker:Tanya Tang: really appreciate all the
Speaker:Tanya Tang: insights and feedback you
Speaker:Tanya Tang: provided us, and I'm sure our
Speaker:Tanya Tang: listeners are going to have a
Speaker:Tanya Tang: lot to take away and digest in
Speaker:Tanya Tang: this episode.
Speaker:Asad Malik: Awesome. Thanks, Tanya.
