In this episode of Surfing Your Edge, Kristine explores what it really means to step into your agency; not by pretending you have unlimited control, but by getting curious about the possibilities available to you.
Whether you’re navigating a career change, approaching retirement, adjusting to a new season of life, or feeling constrained by circumstances beyond your control, Kristine challenges you to question what you’ve accepted as inevitable. She shares how small, meaningful actions can strengthen your sense of agency, open doors to new opportunities, and move you toward a bigger, bolder, badassier life.
Because agency isn’t just about creating the life you want, it’s also about choosing how you show up, the impact you have on others, and the legacy you want to leave behind.
The Shift Beneath the Words:
As you make courageous choices and become a fuller expression of yourself, you can inspire others, contribute to the world around you, and begin building the legacy you want to leave.
About the Host:
Kristine Goad is endlessly curious about the moment when “I could never” becomes “What if I tried?” As the Surfing Your Edge Coach, her work centers on transforming our relationship with fear, trusting ourselves more deeply, and creating lives that feel bigger, bolder, and more fully our own. Her approach blends coaching, mental fitness, adventure, experimentation, and wonder—shaped by a life that has included bicycling across America, writing a memoir, building a business, and taking surf lessons to overcome her fear of open water in her late 40s. She is less interested in fearless living than in what becomes possible when we get curious about the things that scare us.

Your travels have brought you to the Surfing
Speaker:Your Edge podcast, where we explore what it
Speaker:takes to create the bigger, bolder, badass life
Speaker:you know you were born for.
Speaker:Not a life that simply looks good on
Speaker:paper, and not another spin on the self
Speaker:-help hamster wheel.
Speaker:If you're ready for more joy, more peace,
Speaker:and more contribution, you're in the right place.
Speaker:I'm Kristine Goad, the Surfing Your Edge coach.
Speaker:Let's get surfing!
Speaker:Agency isn't pretending you have unlimited choices.
Speaker:It's recognizing that you probably have more options
Speaker:than you can see right now, and getting
Speaker:curious about what they might be.
Speaker:I'm Kristine, and I am the Surfing Your
Speaker:Edge coach, and I am all about agency.
Speaker:The reason I'm here is to help people
Speaker:live the bigger, bolder, badass lives they know
Speaker:they were born for, and in order to
Speaker:do that, we have to learn to step
Speaker:into our agency, which probably also means we
Speaker:have to learn to find opportunities that may
Speaker:not come to the surface immediately, right?
Speaker:And then, here's the sneaky part, I don't
Speaker:know if I've said this already in the
Speaker:podcast or not, it might be a big
Speaker:reveal, the sneaky part of agency for me
Speaker:is that once you start living that bigger,
Speaker:bolder, badass life you know you were born
Speaker:for, I'm hoping you will also use your
Speaker:agency to leave a legacy and to start
Speaker:stepping into the world in a bigger way
Speaker:and really thinking about how you can make
Speaker:the world a better place.
Speaker:You may not have any clue how you're
Speaker:going to do it now, and that's totally
Speaker:fine, but I think it's completely possible.
Speaker:So this episode is for you if you
Speaker:are looking at the current economic and political
Speaker:climate and thinking, now is not a great
Speaker:time to stick your head up and start
Speaker:going for that big dream.
Speaker:If you're thinking that now is a better
Speaker:time to wait it out and see what
Speaker:happens, I hear you, but this episode is
Speaker:going to hopefully shake you loose from that
Speaker:a little bit.
Speaker:It's also for you if you're thinking about
Speaker:changing careers, if you're a new empty nester
Speaker:and trying to figure out what life looks
Speaker:like from this vantage point, if you're considering
Speaker:retirement or if retirement is looming and you
Speaker:know you're not ready for the rocking chair
Speaker:and the remote and you know there's more
Speaker:for you to experience and enjoy and contribute
Speaker:to the world, then this is a conversation
Speaker:I want to have with you.
Speaker:So let's get started.
Speaker:We're going to talk today about how to
Speaker:find your agency, step into your agency, use
Speaker:your agency, and I can't wait.
Speaker:Okay, so if you're feeling constrained and you
Speaker:don't know what options are available to you
Speaker:or you're feeling there are no options available
Speaker:to you, right?
Speaker:I would love it if you would start
Speaker:by noticing where you're treating things as if
Speaker:they're inevitable.
Speaker:Where are you hearing yourself say, this is
Speaker:just how my job is, this is just
Speaker:how life is.
Speaker:I'm too old to start over, my partner
Speaker:would never go for that, I can't afford
Speaker:it, I don't have enough time, the world
Speaker:is such a mess, what difference could I
Speaker:possibly make, right?
Speaker:If you're hearing yourself say any of those
Speaker:things, chances are you're giving away your agency.
Speaker:Some of those constraints are absolutely real, but
Speaker:the constraint and the conclusion we draw from
Speaker:it are not always the same thing.
Speaker:This could be your opportunity to really begin
Speaker:to understand that agency is not having unlimited
Speaker:choices.
Speaker:It's about getting curious about the choices you
Speaker:actually do have, right?
Speaker:That is the very first thing we said
Speaker:at the top of this podcast and I
Speaker:want to say it again.
Speaker:Curiosity is the skill that helps you unlock
Speaker:your agency.
Speaker:So a useful question to ask yourself now
Speaker:might be, what have I decided is fixed
Speaker:that might actually not be fixed, right?
Speaker:What could change and what is not really
Speaker:as it seems?
Speaker:The second thing I'd like you to consider
Speaker:is that agency is not control, it's choosing
Speaker:your move.
Speaker:A lot of times we think because we
Speaker:don't get to decide all of the factors
Speaker:of a situation that that means we have
Speaker:no ability to move and usually that is
Speaker:not the case, right?
Speaker:Agency lives in the space of given what
Speaker:is true right now, what do I want
Speaker:to do next?
Speaker:And the point I should make here is
Speaker:that you don't have to know all of
Speaker:the steps.
Speaker:You just have to see one little opening,
Speaker:right?
Speaker:There probably are several, but if you notice
Speaker:one and you act on that one opening,
Speaker:once you get through that door, chances are
Speaker:another opportunity will open to you as well.
Speaker:So you don't have to see the whole
Speaker:path from here to there in order to
Speaker:take that first move.
Speaker:You can just step into it now and
Speaker:trust that the next step will appear.
Speaker:So the true skill here is to learn
Speaker:to read what's happening, to make choices, to
Speaker:adjust based on what happens when you make
Speaker:that first move and respond, right?
Speaker:To respond to what comes up.
Speaker:So it may feel like you're in a
Speaker:box, but I would imagine there's probably a
Speaker:way out and maybe you haven't seen it
Speaker:yet.
Speaker:The third thing I'd like you to consider
Speaker:is that agency grows when you use it.
Speaker:We don't usually reclaim agency by making one
Speaker:enormous life-changing decision.
Speaker:We reclaim it through small acts that remind
Speaker:us we can affect what happens next, right?
Speaker:You can send the email, you can ask
Speaker:the question, you can say no, you can
Speaker:apply for the job or the opportunity, you
Speaker:can try the class, you can make an
Speaker:appointment, you can write the first page or
Speaker:the first paragraph, right?
Speaker:You can tell someone what you want.
Speaker:You can take one meaningful step towards something
Speaker:you care about.
Speaker:So again, we come back to the fact
Speaker:that it takes just one step.
Speaker:And when you get used to taking that
Speaker:one step and looking around and seeing what
Speaker:else is available, it's easier to take the
Speaker:next step.
Speaker:Every time you take an action that says,
Speaker:I have some say in what happens next,
Speaker:you strengthen your sense of agency.
Speaker:And this is where the sneaky part comes
Speaker:in, because agency isn't only about creating the
Speaker:life you want, it's also about how you
Speaker:participate in creating the world you want to
Speaker:live in.
Speaker:We don't have to solve everything.
Speaker:We can choose something we care about and
Speaker:make our move.
Speaker:So you may have heard me say this
Speaker:already, but I really believe that we are
Speaker:on this planet to become the fullest expression
Speaker:of ourselves, right?
Speaker:And that means learning to find your agency,
Speaker:learning to see opportunities, learning to have the
Speaker:courage to step into them and getting closer
Speaker:and closer to living that life you know
Speaker:you were born for.
Speaker:And as you get better at making the
Speaker:right choices in your life, you're going to
Speaker:impact the people around you.
Speaker:They're going to benefit from the choices you're
Speaker:making.
Speaker:They're also going to be inspired by the
Speaker:choices you're making.
Speaker:And you'll also feel inspired, I hope, to
Speaker:start making choices that make the world a
Speaker:better place, that leave the legacy you might
Speaker:really want to leave.
Speaker:And you may, again, have no clue what
Speaker:that looks like, what that might feel like,
Speaker:but it's out there for you.
Speaker:And if you're curious and you're courageous and
Speaker:you're willing to take one step at a
Speaker:time, you really can lean into leaving the
Speaker:legacy that you are meant to leave.
Speaker:I know it can be a challenge to
Speaker:know where to look to find opportunities and
Speaker:find the courage to step into your own
Speaker:agency, especially if you've had voices in your
Speaker:head or in the world or both telling
Speaker:you for a very long time that this
Speaker:is the box you belong in, this is
Speaker:the lane you belong in, don't rock the
Speaker:boat, right?
Speaker:The rest of us all agree that this
Speaker:is how the world works.
Speaker:You need to get on board.
Speaker:If those are the kinds of voices you're
Speaker:hearing, it can be a real challenge to
Speaker:find your own agency on your own.
Speaker:And sometimes you need someone else to step
Speaker:in, right?
Speaker:There's the saying you can't read the label
Speaker:on your own bottle.
Speaker:So in that case, you might need a
Speaker:friend or a coach or me.
Speaker:I host regular possibility parties, and I will
Speaker:leave information about how to get in touch
Speaker:with me about that in the show notes.
Speaker:So what we've talked about so far today
Speaker:is that step number one is notice where
Speaker:you have surrendered your choice, right?
Speaker:Where might there be opportunities that you're not
Speaker:looking for because you assume something is true?
Speaker:Two, distinguish control from agency.
Speaker:You can't always control all of the situation,
Speaker:but you can make choices about where and
Speaker:how you move.
Speaker:And third, practice agency through small, regular, meaningful
Speaker:action.
Speaker:The more agency you step into, the more
Speaker:agency becomes available for you.
Speaker:And the better your life gets, the better
Speaker:the life of everyone around you gets, and
Speaker:the more you're able to contribute to making
Speaker:the world the kind of world you want
Speaker:to live in.
Speaker:So final questions for you.
Speaker:What have I been treating as inevitable?
Speaker:Where might there be an option I haven't
Speaker:seen yet?
Speaker:And what could happen if I got curious
Speaker:enough to look for it?
Speaker:What I really want you to remember about
Speaker:today's conversation is that you probably have more
Speaker:agency, more possibility than you're aware of.
Speaker:And I hope you take a few moments
Speaker:today, tomorrow, next week, to keep considering where
Speaker:those options are and where they might take
Speaker:you.
