Speaker:

Hey, Hey, it's Saturday.

2

:

And you found us again for another

episode of the daily Bible podcast.

3

:

Well, good morning, busy Bible BS.

4

:

Busy Bible BS.

5

:

That's a, quite the alliteration.

6

:

Oh, thank you.

7

:

Yeah.

8

:

Yeah, I got buzzing on the mind.

9

:

Buzz buzz, buzz, buzz.

10

:

Uh, tell me your son got a buzz.

11

:

He did.

12

:

I think, I think by this point, my

kids will have followed and I think

13

:

they'll have buzz cuts as well.

14

:

And I am thrilled.

15

:

I could not be more happy about that.

16

:

You are ecstatic.

17

:

Um, cause I mean, number one, we

could do this at home, like every

18

:

week, get buzz and keep up nineties.

19

:

It is much more affordable.

20

:

Free is better than anything else.

21

:

I mean, haircuts here crazy.

22

:

30, 30 bucks a pop man.

23

:

I am.

24

:

Yeah, just about 30 bucks a pop and

inconsistent, generally speaking.

25

:

Yes.

26

:

Yes.

27

:

Even my go-to gal has on

some, some days she does.

28

:

Good jobs.

29

:

Other days it's just adequate.

30

:

I'm not, unless I'm

not excited about that.

31

:

I miss my old barber.

32

:

I Ms.

33

:

Kim for sure.

34

:

But let's I want to talk about haircuts.

35

:

I'm going to ask you a question

because people think that this is

36

:

kind of a name, probably don't think

a whole lot about haircuts, except

37

:

does it look nice and does it fit

your head shape and all those things?

38

:

Is there.

39

:

Any guidance that you would give.

40

:

Uh, you know, I guess a young man,

a young man comes to you and says,

41

:

pastor PJ, I want to get a haircut.

42

:

Uh, do you have guidance about the kind of

haircut a young man should get, or even.

43

:

Amen period.

44

:

Yes.

45

:

Yes, I do.

46

:

Number one.

47

:

Uh, you don't want it to be a distraction.

48

:

And so that's going to vary

depending on your role for

49

:

your culture and your culture.

50

:

I think that plays a role

for you and I, right.

51

:

Like we might think, oh man, I, I

really want to get a Mohawk because

52

:

I think a Mohawk looks cool, but

based on our, our role and the

53

:

fact that we're up in front in a.

54

:

Uh, the church context, we

don't want to be distracting.

55

:

Right.

56

:

And that would certainly be distracting.

57

:

I mean, but okay.

58

:

So let me just push back a tiny bit.

59

:

Yes.

60

:

Depending on the church you go to

though, like a really cool haircut.

61

:

Yeah.

62

:

That's fair.

63

:

That's the role, right?

64

:

Yeah.

65

:

So if you've got like those, uh, those

lines on your head, or you got the,

66

:

you got the, what you call those little

lines on your eyebrows, if you did

67

:

that, people might be okay with that.

68

:

That's true.

69

:

That's true.

70

:

And that's, that's that's fair.

71

:

That's that's well taken.

72

:

So that goes back to your context,

your culture, things like that.

73

:

So that would be one.

74

:

The other cultural consideration

is this, uh, for a man.

75

:

That your haircut needs to reflect your

gender and the gender expectations of

76

:

the culture in which you find yourself.

77

:

Um, and, and that carries over to

our dress and our appearance as well.

78

:

Uh, the Bible and the old Testament

forbid mails from wearing women's clothing

79

:

and vice versa, there was to be an

embracing of our gender, our identity.

80

:

And that's a loaded phrase.

81

:

Isn't it?

82

:

If there ever was one today in today's

culture, by that, I mean, the, the gender

83

:

that God created us to be the one that

you chose at birth, you're saying, yeah.

84

:

Yeah.

85

:

Um, we should look like that and, yeah.

86

:

Okay, fine.

87

:

That's going to look different

in different cultures.

88

:

I agree with that a hundred percent

and at different times that's going to

89

:

look different at times long hair was,

was written off as, as nobody can have

90

:

long hair and be, be masculine at all.

91

:

It's totally feminine.

92

:

Right.

93

:

Um, you go to the Japanese culture,

the samurai warriors have long hair

94

:

and it wasn't considered feminine.

95

:

So there's, it's, it's not the same

across the board, but for where you

96

:

are, wherever you find yourself and

whatever the cultural norms are.

97

:

As a man, you need to

look like a man, right?

98

:

I think it's probably, it goes back

to this idea that what you wear and

99

:

how you present yourself, preaches

everything about you, preaches

100

:

a message to people around you.

101

:

And the thing that we want

to preach is God is king and

102

:

I follow the, I follow God.

103

:

And I think what he typically, we're going

to see some of that in our reading today.

104

:

God is an organized God.

105

:

He's not a God of chaos.

106

:

He's not a God of haphazard

actions and behaviors.

107

:

God has organized.

108

:

He's thoughtful and he's prudent.

109

:

If I could use that word about God.

110

:

And I think our.

111

:

Our, uh, presentation of

ourselves, it should reflect that.

112

:

It should look like the

fruit of the spirit.

113

:

It should not look like the

devil has gotten into our hair

114

:

and, you know, messed it up.

115

:

Not that I have.

116

:

I don't have anything in mind.

117

:

I'm not pointing fingers at anybody.

118

:

Just thinking.

119

:

Our presentation should match the

God that we serve and not, and

120

:

again, I don't have a specific

haircut in mind, but I'm with you.

121

:

I think that really, uh, because

what we were and what we, how we do

122

:

our hair preachers, I think we have

to be careful what we're preaching.

123

:

What was the.

124

:

Do you have any hairstyles

that you just look back on it?

125

:

You regret?

126

:

Dude.

127

:

I have a couple.

128

:

Let me, let me just tell you.

129

:

And in middle school, yes, it was

middle school and middle school.

130

:

I dyed my hair red.

131

:

Okay.

132

:

And I, I got in green and the back of

my head, this was like $120 haircut.

133

:

My stepdad did it and

I was thankful for it.

134

:

Um, but I had the name of a band.

135

:

In green on the back of my head

and the rest of my hair was red.

136

:

Wow.

137

:

And it was spiked.

138

:

Wow.

139

:

Yeah, it wasn't long

spiked, but it was spiked.

140

:

I remember going to the mall

and it was, again, it was super

141

:

expensive, but it was so memorable.

142

:

And then we went to the concert

together with the name of that band

143

:

that I had in the back of my head.

144

:

Went to that concert.

145

:

It was, it was great.

146

:

I mean pre Christ.

147

:

It was great.

148

:

And we had a great time, but when

I went to school the next day that

149

:

principal's like, okay, this is a Sharpie.

150

:

This is your hair.

151

:

You can either do this yourself.

152

:

Go home right now and go.

153

:

Make it the right color.

154

:

Or I can do it for you right now.

155

:

He's holding the Sharpie in front of me.

156

:

Yeah.

157

:

So I said, I guess I'm

going home then by teach.

158

:

Yeah, that wasn't fun.

159

:

Another one I did, I had, so I

don't know if you remember this.

160

:

I don't know if it was

even a thing in Texas.

161

:

Most of my head was like, uh,

probably a path or, or the zero.

162

:

Yeah.

163

:

Except for my bangs.

164

:

Oh, We're all the way

in the back of my head.

165

:

So like, I don't know

what what's that, but.

166

:

10 inches maybe.

167

:

Okay.

168

:

Um, and they were, they

were blonde blonde.

169

:

Yeah.

170

:

I'm not, I'm not.

171

:

Proud not proud of that.

172

:

Okay.

173

:

I've just say, this is the way it was.

174

:

I don't, even if I have, if I have

pictures of that, I'm sure I do somewhere.

175

:

My mom probably does.

176

:

But those are two haircuts

that I wish I had not gotten.

177

:

Yeah.

178

:

Tell us about your space.

179

:

Yeah.

180

:

I kind of had the opposite

of the bangs thing.

181

:

I had the buzz and I had

the rat tail when I was in.

182

:

Elementary school.

183

:

Oh, wow.

184

:

Okay.

185

:

We can't be held accountable for that.

186

:

Yeah.

187

:

Elementary school.

188

:

I'm going to have to talk

to your parents about.

189

:

Yup.

190

:

Yup.

191

:

Yup.

192

:

You guys.

193

:

Yeah, it was bad.

194

:

And then I think it was

fifth or sixth grade.

195

:

I had the chili bowl.

196

:

The cheese.

197

:

I have the chili bowl.

198

:

I think we need to see this picture.

199

:

I there's it's floating around somewhere.

200

:

It was.

201

:

Floppy and yep.

202

:

He was the chili bowl.

203

:

So those are the two that

I probably regret the most.

204

:

See a buzz cut.

205

:

You'll never regret.

206

:

Cause that's never going

to go out of style.

207

:

It's true.

208

:

People are always shocked by it.

209

:

Yeah.

210

:

For initially, they're

like, whoa, we're drawing.

211

:

So much attention to your face, right?

212

:

So you've got to have a good face for it.

213

:

And a good head shape, but right.

214

:

You know, Get over that.

215

:

Yeah.

216

:

Yeah.

217

:

And then there's the guys that

start losing their hair and

218

:

they're like, I'm just going,

I'm in a big shame and good ball.

219

:

Yeah.

220

:

I could, I don't think I could do that.

221

:

What'd you do that?

222

:

I mean, if I had to, I would

I'm I'm hoping I won't have to.

223

:

I'm going to have.

224

:

It's a good head of hair.

225

:

I think it will be okay.

226

:

Apparently.

227

:

It's your mom's dad is the genetic

connection for baldness and my

228

:

mom's dad was fine on that front.

229

:

From what I understand too.

230

:

Yeah, you can always go the Elon

Musk route and buy some hair plugs.

231

:

You could, but no.

232

:

Yeah.

233

:

Did you ever see his picture

before he had his hair today?

234

:

No.

235

:

Like he was basically bald.

236

:

I do way older.

237

:

He looks younger today than he did when

he was however he was 20 years ago.

238

:

Look it up at some point.

239

:

It was pretty impressive.

240

:

Interesting.

241

:

Anyway.

242

:

Interesting.

243

:

Yeah.

244

:

Yeah.

245

:

Those guys that shave every day.

246

:

Like I know we've got a couple of guys.

247

:

At church that day.

248

:

And then they will tell

you it's a daily thing.

249

:

Yeah, I couldn't do that.

250

:

I don't mind once a week, I get

my haircut every two weeks, but.

251

:

Daily, just too much.

252

:

You get your haircut every

two weeks, two weeks.

253

:

Yes.

254

:

It adds up, man.

255

:

Just because they have Mexican hair, the

hair goes out like this on the sides.

256

:

I can't do anything with it.

257

:

Yeah.

258

:

He held his hands next to his head.

259

:

Everybody in stuck his fingers out.

260

:

So if you're wondering it

grows, like what I can't see.

261

:

I want to know.

262

:

I mean, just.

263

:

Did you all know about Mexicans hair?

264

:

If he lets it grow, it goes everywhere.

265

:

My son has that hair.

266

:

Uh, Adam, that is, yeah.

267

:

Yeah.

268

:

When mine gets too long, I

ended up doing the side part.

269

:

So if you ever see me, I've

got the side part going on.

270

:

It's because I need a haircut.

271

:

So.

272

:

I just got one recently though.

273

:

So yeah.

274

:

We're good to go.

275

:

Your head does look smaller.

276

:

Hey, thanks man.

277

:

Appreciate that.

278

:

Uh, Hey, let's, uh, let's jump in then

to our Bible reading passage for the day.

279

:

First Chronicles 23, 24, 25.

280

:

All right.

281

:

Uh, this section or the, the.

282

:

Chapter at the beginning of chapter

23, opens with Solomon as king.

283

:

Uh, over Israel and, uh,

this is a little bit less.

284

:

Uh, dramatic than what we'll find in,

in the, the account in first Kings.

285

:

But Solomon's there.

286

:

He's going to be king.

287

:

Um, but before he really fully

takes over, David wants to make

288

:

sure that he's set up for success.

289

:

So we've already seen that.

290

:

David wanted to, uh, see the, the

supplies provided for the temple and

291

:

even some of the worship songs written

for the dedication of the temple.

292

:

And now he just wants to make sure

that that Solomon has a good in to

293

:

your point that you just mentioned

a minute ago, pastor Ron, uh, an

294

:

organized beginning to his, his rain.

295

:

And so that's kind of what

we find in these chapters.

296

:

David goes into overblown administrative

mode and begins to, to organize everybody.

297

:

I like it, man.

298

:

I'm all about them.

299

:

Yes.

300

:

Amen.

301

:

Amen.

302

:

I was aiming in the whole

way through this thing.

303

:

You're like, man, this speaks to me.

304

:

This is me.

305

:

This is my.

306

:

My heart type of leadership.

307

:

So he's, he's got, you know, the, the

priests are going to be organized.

308

:

The, uh, the Levites are

going to be organized.

309

:

The singers are going to be organized.

310

:

It's it's, it's everything to make

sure things are going to go as

311

:

smoothly as possible for Solomon

in his task of leading the nation.

312

:

Um, it's a Solomon is,

is set up for success.

313

:

By his dad, which is pretty cool.

314

:

That is really cool.

315

:

There's a couple.

316

:

I mean, there's at least one thing

in here that I was just like, I'm

317

:

still scratching my head, trying

to figure out what to do with it.

318

:

The age of the Levi's changes without any.

319

:

Any explanation.

320

:

So you'll notice early on in this chapter

here, if you're watching or looking at

321

:

your Bible, scroll through it, or page

to the, to this area here in verse three.

322

:

David.

323

:

Assigns the Levi's gets to

be 30 years old and upward.

324

:

So then he numbers them 38,000 men.

325

:

But if you look further down

in your Bible, you make your

326

:

way on down to verse 24.

327

:

He says that the Levi's.

328

:

Um, the sons of Levi, sons of Levi by

their father's houses, heads of the

329

:

father's houses, as they were listed,

according to the number of the names of

330

:

the individuals from here's the number.

331

:

20 years old and upward.

332

:

They were to do the work.

333

:

So, is it 20 or is it 30 and

what's happening and why?

334

:

And, and, and the short answer I

have right now is I'm not sure.

335

:

I'm not sure yet.

336

:

That was trying to figure out.

337

:

Okay.

338

:

Is there a good explanation and, and,

and some of the commentaries have.

339

:

Potentials.

340

:

Um, but there isn't a really strong,

I mean, Even the MacArthur study

341

:

Bible at that MacArthur, you know, he

kind of just cuts through the stuff

342

:

and just tells you what he thinks.

343

:

I don't think he has a really good

answer to that either other than.

344

:

Uh, other than he just says it's,

there's, there's a variety of numbers.

345

:

If five-year apprenticeship,

he says begins at age 25.

346

:

Cross-references number is 8

24 and in some cases, 20, and

347

:

he refers to this passage here.

348

:

Um, doesn't give a reason why though.

349

:

It's.

350

:

It's just, that's what it is.

351

:

So there you go.

352

:

Something interesting.

353

:

I'm sure we'll figure out an answer at

some point in time, but there you go.

354

:

There's something that you could

scratch your chin about with me.

355

:

And try to figure out a solution.

356

:

Yeah.

357

:

Yeah.

358

:

That is puzzling.

359

:

For sure.

360

:

Yeah.

361

:

Um, a couple other notes here.

362

:

Look at.

363

:

Uh, verse 14 from chapter 23, you'll

notice, but the sons of Moses, the man of

364

:

God were named among the tribe of Levi.

365

:

Uh, Moses the man of God.

366

:

I just made a note there.

367

:

I said, man, what a cool epitaph

that would be to have that.

368

:

The way that you remembered.

369

:

Yeah.

370

:

Um, you know, and again, it's, it's

a reminder to us much like David,

371

:

the man after God's own heart,

you have Moses, the man of God.

372

:

Well, Uh, Moses, wasn't

always that type of a guy.

373

:

You remember the, when Moses murder,

the Egyptian, you remember when.

374

:

Uh, Moses struck the rock

instead of speaking to the

375

:

rock and obedience to the Lord.

376

:

You remember?

377

:

I mean, there were plenty of

things that Moses did that, that

378

:

weren't, uh, godly, we would say.

379

:

And yet he's, he's remembered

as the man of God in verse 14.

380

:

So, uh, really a great epitaph in,

in one that all of us should, uh,

381

:

should aspire towards for sure.

382

:

Something that I think we'll all

resonate with someday is verse 26.

383

:

Check this out.

384

:

And so the Levi's no longer need

to carry the tabernacle or any

385

:

of the things for its service.

386

:

And all the congregation

said a minute, it'd be site.

387

:

I've been, I've done mobile church things.

388

:

Now twice.

389

:

This is their second time around.

390

:

And I, every time I'm

like, why am I doing this?

391

:

I can't wait for a building.

392

:

I'm praying God, give us a building.

393

:

It would be so much easier.

394

:

And sometimes easy is not what God wants.

395

:

In fact, right now in our present season,

easiest, clearly not what God wants.

396

:

I think God appreciates and enjoys

the labor that we put forward.

397

:

In serving him in this particular way.

398

:

And again, there, there is a light at the

end of the tunnel, how far that light is.

399

:

We don't know, but God

clearly has it in mind.

400

:

At least he did for the Levi it's here.

401

:

And I trust that someday.

402

:

It will be the same for us as well.

403

:

When that day comes, we're going to

celebrate, we're gonna have a party.

404

:

It's going to be a very great day

and like the Levi's we're going to

405

:

be like, Hey, no longer need to carry

the tabernacle or any of the things.

406

:

And the stage plays.

407

:

He's got his stage yet.

408

:

The speakers will praise God together.

409

:

When that day comes.

410

:

Yeah, by the way we, since I

mentioned it, I think in, in

411

:

a yesterday's episode or, or.

412

:

Thursday's episode.

413

:

We've got a couple of people sign up

for our set up and tear down team.

414

:

Thanks for responding.

415

:

Thanks for responding.

416

:

And he'd been I'm I'm stoked.

417

:

I'm looking for more.

418

:

We're not done.

419

:

Uh, we need more people.

420

:

So, uh, if you're still wondering.

421

:

Then yeah, here it is a note also

verse 27 for, by the last words

422

:

of David, the sons of Levi were

number from 20 years old and upward.

423

:

So there you see, 20

years, 10 years again.

424

:

But also notice the last words of David.

425

:

And so for David, this was

significant enough that he

426

:

thought to himself, you know what.

427

:

This needs to get done.

428

:

These are some of his last words

towards the end of his life.

429

:

And he spending it.

430

:

By giving specific instructions

on how things should be done in

431

:

order and in an organized fashion.

432

:

Um, Which is is good.

433

:

And that's something that, that,

you know, I think pastor rod.

434

:

As you and I have have served together

in ministry now, uh, more intensely

435

:

over the last couple of years.

436

:

I think just getting to know each other

a little bit more in that I think this

437

:

is definitely your default, your gifting.

438

:

I think.

439

:

I wouldn't say this is my, my

default, my gifting, but you're

440

:

getting better all the time.

441

:

I'm trying to get it right all the time.

442

:

Yeah, I can sometimes be more

fly by the seat of my pants and

443

:

that's kind of my comfort zone.

444

:

Sometimes it's just to go off the cuff,

but, uh, but I'm, I'm, I'm working.

445

:

I'm trying to come back

towards the organization stuck.

446

:

Well, it's funny that you said it

because I don't think I grew up this way.

447

:

I, I read these chapters

and I was convicted.

448

:

I'm like, man, I'm not organized enough.

449

:

I just need to.

450

:

Because Dave is not just

putting things in order.

451

:

He's putting people in places he's

assembling people to do the work.

452

:

And I thought that's so brilliant.

453

:

He's, he's delegating responsibility

and authority to a variety of people,

454

:

groups to make sure that the house of

God and his people are well cared for.

455

:

And so I was reading this thinking

that I could do this better.

456

:

I should do this better.

457

:

I'm sure.

458

:

David also had, you know, people that he

was training and that real apprenticing

459

:

in different roles to help grow the

people and to grow the Levi's, to

460

:

become who they were to be musicians

and priests and all these people.

461

:

Now we need to do a better job with this.

462

:

In fact, I would go so far

as to say, because this is an

463

:

element of God's character.

464

:

I think every person to some degree

in varying degrees, it's going to look

465

:

different than all of us should aspire

to have this, um, and, and grow in it.

466

:

Uh, to, to the degree, that

would be pleasing to God.

467

:

Again, it's gonna look

different for all of us.

468

:

Not everyone has to look like you're

a power productivity person, but I

469

:

think this is an evident character

of God that we should emulate.

470

:

Yeah.

471

:

And, uh, on that note, if that's an area

that you're saying, Hey, I'd love to, to

472

:

get better, where to start a good book

for you from a Christian perspective,

473

:

do more better by Tim Challies.

474

:

We've recommended that book

before on this podcast.

475

:

Uh, but that was super helpful,

uh, talking about some of the nuts

476

:

and bolts of, of organization and,

uh, getting yourself a calendar

477

:

and a, to do list manager.

478

:

Right.

479

:

How to utilize all those things.

480

:

Cause it's one thing

to download those apps.

481

:

It's another thing then to know

what to do with them afterwards.

482

:

So that book do more

better by Tim showers.

483

:

Uh, I would recommend it to you for sure.

484

:

One I read recently that I

enjoyed was called slow practice.

485

:

Productivity by Cal Newport.

486

:

He calls it and subtitle the lost art

of accomplishment without burnout.

487

:

And I know that burnout

is a big deal these days.

488

:

It's kind of a term that we all

know it's become ubiquitous.

489

:

Uh, maybe that book would be

helpful for you if you feel

490

:

like you're on the edge of that.

491

:

Yep.

492

:

By the way, what we see here

in first Chronicles, 23 through

493

:

25 is, uh, has something to do

with, with Luke chapter one.

494

:

And, uh, John the Baptist

because, uh, Zachariah, who was

495

:

John's dad was one of the Levi.

496

:

Priests part of the tribe of Levi there.

497

:

And he was on duty in the town, in the

temple when the angel of the Lord showed

498

:

up to him and said, Hey, Uh, you know

what your wife is going to have a son

499

:

and you're going to name him, John.

500

:

And oh, by the way, you're not gonna

be able to talk until he's born.

501

:

But Levi was on-duty or Levi.

502

:

Uh, Zachariah was on duty as a Revit

in the temple during this time.

503

:

And, and this is part of that, that, uh,

that foundation there, because they went

504

:

onto this rotational schedule there.

505

:

And so it was his turn

to be on the temple.

506

:

Uh, grounds doing the, the duties

there when, uh, the angel showed up.

507

:

One of the things that I took

away and we tend to do this when

508

:

we're looking at a list of names.

509

:

I just think about all the people that are

involved in making this thing function.

510

:

And I begin to think about our

people, our church, and all the

511

:

people that serve in multiple ways.

512

:

I just, I'm thankful for that.

513

:

Yes.

514

:

Don't take that for granted.

515

:

Your, your, your most valuable

resource is not your money.

516

:

It's not your time.

517

:

Although that is valuable.

518

:

Both of them are.

519

:

And as people, as people, God

made you to be a relational being.

520

:

In fact, he designed you for relationship

with himself that ought to tell you where

521

:

your highest value is relating with God.

522

:

And then he tells us, Hey,

love people care about people.

523

:

And that there's your marching

orders to love God and love others.

524

:

This is how we glorify him.

525

:

And part of that is We glorify him

by loving him and loving others in

526

:

the house and how we serve and our

work, if we're working fast food, or

527

:

if you're working as a pastor in our

case, or as a lawyer or a doctor or a

528

:

mechanic, you're loving God and loving

people through your acts of service.

529

:

So man, what a good thing and

what a cool thing it is to see

530

:

all these people working together

to bless the people of God.

531

:

Your work matters, your service matters.

532

:

And man, you should be thankful

for the privilege of getting

533

:

to do it for the people of God.

534

:

What a great thing that is.

535

:

Amen.

536

:

I meant, well, thanks for

tuning in for another episode

537

:

of the daily Bible podcast.

538

:

Keep, bring your Bibles and tune

in again tomorrow for another one.

539

:

We'll see you then.

540

:

Bye.
