Shownotes
In gaining perseverance and mental toughness, we must also understand what impacts us and what does not. We are very frequently suckered into feeling urgent and immediate anxiety about negative events. But when you zoom out onto a long enough timeline, we will all die and disappear from the earth.
The 40% rule as popularized by Navy SEALs is instructive to redefining our limitations. In essence, when we think we’ve reached our limits, we have probably reached only about 40%—not even a majority percentage. We will suffer and feel discomfort, but we will not break. We may bend, but we will still be able to get up after being knocked down. Thus, the final portion of perseverance is to expect pain and only be pleasantly surprised when it is less than you expected.
