I first heard about you and I said

a rare job and there aren't many of us.

It's one of those jobs

where it's kind of rare.

I show up at conferences and workshops

and events all around Australia.

And I draw what I'm hearing.

To help make meaning for

the people in the room.

And I do it on an iPad mostly these days.

Um, so I work digitally and while

I'm drawing people are seeing it

projected in the space and see it

and help, it helps people understand

what's going on at the same time.

Michellle: because for, I'm a very visual

person, so when , I've seen you at an

event and I was, I was just mesmerized

because for me, I was like, Oh, that's,

I understand it a little bit more.

I get what people are talking about.

And for me, it was, I was, I think

I stood by you cause you were

actually drawing not on the computer.

And I was like, this chick's so clever.

So I'm a visual person too, obviously,

and it's, it is, I think 65 percent

of folks are visual learners.

It's not an unusual thing to, to

need to take information in in

that way or for to find success

taking information in like that.

So it's one of those things

where we're not just going to

talk about what I do for a job.

I mean, even though, look, I

can, I can talk about it forever.

So, I do a lot of work with

the Department of Education.

they have a project called

Self Determination in Education

Reform that they, um, it's been

going on for a few years now.

It's part of the Maroong

Strategy in Victoria.

and I've attended a lot of campfire

conversations and, and larger

forums with teachers and things.

And , it's all about hearing, , what,

, young Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander

people, wanting their education

to look like, um, so that they are

self determining and capturing for

them while they are sharing with the

teachers or the facilitator in the

room helps them feel heard, you know.

Really cool way and especially when

they see it's happening, the drawings

are coming to life in front of them,

the things that they're asking for and

suggesting, uh, being synthesized on the

spot and not just someone writing notes.

It's they're seeing.

Michellle: Does that feel like when you're

doing that, do you feel like you're, you

know, you're advocating for them as well?

Debbie: uh, yeah, in, in a, I mean,

because I'm not in control of what

happens after that day, but I know

that it helps people feel heard.

I think, but the difference for the

people in the, audience is that they

feel heard and they can see that they

are heard because they're seeing the

drawing happening in front of them.

They're not just saying how they

feel and someone's writing notes

They're seeing, they're seeing

that everyone in the room is

watching the same drawing and

contributing to the same thing.

powerful way of connecting

we're visual learners, but also

it's the power of being heard.

eye activity, um, Any kind of part of

that, where distraction and, attention

being, being able to remain locked in.

words locked in a lot.

chemistry homework or something.

But for them to, for, for people who

are distracted easily, sitting at a

conference, listening to a speaker do a

keynote for 45 minutes, if they've got a,

Debbie: they've got a, well, sometimes

those keynotes are incredible and

amazing, but, but if you've, you can

still be listening with your full

audio attention, but to see a drawing

coming to life while you're listening,

just gives this extra thing to focus

on and to relax into and it just makes

everything stick more in your brain.

So, uh, accidentally met somebody who

did this work probably 20 years ago.

When I was living in Brisbane,

back in the time when everyone

had a home phone, not a mobile.

And I answered the home phone and

this woman was calling to talk to my

flatmate and she did this work for

one of the big consultancy companies.

And she was describing

what she did for a job.

Well, you know, like you normally go, Oh

yeah, I'll just take a message and you

write it down, but I'm not like that.

girl, her name is Jack ended up

talking to her for about an hour.

it sounded like running away with a

It took a while for my life to turn

in, get to a situation where it was

I did, like, without realising it.
