Bec:

Welcome back to episode five.

2

:

If you've stuck around for this

long, we are now BFFs, right?

3

:

Isn't that right?

4

:

Michellle: exactly.

5

:

Oh

6

:

Bec: Definitely.

7

:

But this time we've got a special guest,

8

:

Michellle: my god, one

of my favourite people!

9

:

Bec: Debbie Wood,

10

:

Michellle: Welcome, Debbie Wood!

11

:

Debbie: you girls who can talk.

12

:

Michellle: Oh, we can talk.

13

:

So can you, though.

14

:

So can you.

15

:

Debbie: True, it's true.

16

:

Michellle: I think that's why we

love you so much, Debbie Wood.

17

:

Bec: Well, let's tell everybody

who Debbie Wood is first.

18

:

Not only is she a living legend who

we both absolutely adore, Debbie

19

:

is a incredibly smart, funny, but

she's also a graphic recorder.

20

:

Extraordinaire.

21

:

She goes along to conferences,

workshops and translate what

22

:

she hears into beautiful visuals

live for the audience to see.

23

:

And can I just say, she

is bloody amazing at

24

:

Michellle: she's so

25

:

Debbie: Oh, thanks Bec, thanks guys.

26

:

Bec: I'm so lucky to have seen

your work in action at events.

27

:

And um, one, first of all, Debbie,

give your socials a plug so people

28

:

can come and find you straight

away while they're listening.

29

:

Debbie: my best way to find me is on

Instagram at deb underscore sketches

30

:

and that's find me there, I think.

31

:

Michellle: where she hangs out.

32

:

Debbie: where I hang out a

little bit, sporadically.

33

:

Michellle: I've noticed that you've been

posting a little bit more, Debbie Wood.

34

:

Debbie: Sometimes I just try to channel

Bex Denner and , do a bit of posting.

35

:

But it's, yes, it's sporadic.

36

:

Michellle: That's all right.

37

:

Do what you, do what you can do.

38

:

Debbie: I do.

39

:

Yeah.

40

:

Michellle: Debbie Wood,

what the fuck do you do?

41

:

Explain to me what the fuck you do?

42

:

What is your job?

43

:

Because that was the question when

I first heard about you and I said

44

:

to Bec, what the fuck does she do?

45

:

Bec: She's like what

is a graphic recorder?

46

:

I've never heard of a graphic recorder.

47

:

Michellle: I actually said,

what the fuck does she do?

48

:

Bec: Yeah,

49

:

Debbie: You did.

50

:

Michellle: Yeah.

51

:

Debbie: Uh, look, no, no, it is, it's such

a rare job and there aren't many of us.

52

:

Australia.

53

:

And, every time , someone

says, what do you do?

54

:

And I say, I'm a graphic recorder.

55

:

I have to put a comma and then

say, do you know what that is?

56

:

Because it's not like a podiatrist.

57

:

Or a teacher or a nurse.

58

:

It's one of those jobs

where it's kind of rare.

59

:

I show up at conferences and workshops

and events all around Australia.

60

:

And I draw what I'm hearing.

61

:

To help make meaning for

the people in the room.

62

:

And I do it on an iPad mostly these days.

63

:

Um, so I work digitally and while

I'm drawing people are seeing it

64

:

projected in the space and see it

and help, it helps people understand

65

:

what's going on at the same time.

66

:

Michellle: because for, I'm a very visual

person, so when , I've seen you at an

67

:

event and I was, I was just mesmerized

because for me, I was like, Oh, that's,

68

:

I understand it a little bit more.

69

:

I get what people are talking about.

70

:

And for me, it was, I was, I think

I stood by you cause you were

71

:

actually drawing not on the computer.

72

:

And I was like, this chick's so clever.

73

:

Bec: a bit clever.

74

:

Michellle: She is.

75

:

Yeah.

76

:

Debbie: look, I'm clever at a thing.

77

:

Bec: Deb, can you give, like, just

give us an example of maybe some

78

:

work that you've done recently?

79

:

And you're like, so this was what the

message we were trying to convey and

80

:

Debbie: Oh, yeah.

81

:

Okay.

82

:

So I'm a visual person too, obviously,

and it's, it is, I think 65 percent

83

:

of folks are visual learners.

84

:

So it is.

85

:

It's not an unusual thing to, to

need to take information in in

86

:

that way or for to find success

taking information in like that.

87

:

So it's one of those things

where we're not just going to

88

:

talk about what I do for a job.

89

:

I mean, even though, look, I

can, I can talk about it forever.

90

:

Because I love it.

91

:

I can't believe my luck every day.

92

:

So, I do a lot of work with

the Department of Education.

93

:

they have a project called

Self Determination in Education

94

:

Reform that they, um, it's been

going on for a few years now.

95

:

It's part of the Maroong

Strategy in Victoria.

96

:

and I've attended a lot of campfire

conversations and, and larger

97

:

forums with teachers and things.

98

:

And , it's all about hearing, , what,

, young Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander

99

:

people, wanting their education

to look like, um, so that they are

100

:

self determining and capturing for

them while they are sharing with the

101

:

teachers or the facilitator in the

room helps them feel heard, you know.

102

:

Really cool way and especially when

they see it's happening, the drawings

103

:

are coming to life in front of them,

the things that they're asking for and

104

:

suggesting, uh, being synthesized on the

spot and not just someone writing notes.

105

:

It's they're seeing.

106

:

a beautiful drawing come to life.

107

:

Um, it's yeah, it's, it's quite cool

108

:

Michellle: Does that feel like when you're

doing that, do you feel like you're, you

109

:

know, you're advocating for them as well?

110

:

Debbie: uh, yeah, in, in a, I mean,

because I'm not in control of what

111

:

happens after that day, but I know

that it helps people feel heard.

112

:

Michellle: Yeah.

113

:

, Debbie: I'm part of a wider picture,

I think, but the difference for the

114

:

people in the, audience is that they

feel heard and they can see that they

115

:

are heard because they're seeing the

drawing happening in front of them.

116

:

They're not just saying how they

feel and someone's writing notes

117

:

on a notepad in front of them.

118

:

They're seeing, they're seeing

that everyone in the room is

119

:

watching the same drawing and

contributing to the same thing.

120

:

Michellle: It's

121

:

Bec: just, I feel like a really

powerful way of connecting

122

:

people in a different way.

123

:

Like we've all said here, like

we're visual learners, but also

124

:

I think like you're saying,

it's the power of being heard.

125

:

It's the power of being seen,

but it's also a really different

126

:

way to get that message across.

127

:

Because what is it?

128

:

It's Can learn around

seven things an hour.

129

:

I think that's, yeah.

130

:

Yeah.

131

:

Debbie: interesting,

132

:

Bec: Yeah.

133

:

So I wonder like, to me, I wonder if

there was more of that kind of stuff

134

:

happening because , a lot of people

are visual learners, would people be

135

:

able to consume more and learn more?

136

:

I don't know.

137

:

It's a thought.

138

:

I'd really

139

:

Debbie: Look, I like

140

:

Bec: on that.

141

:

Debbie: yeah, yeah.

142

:

I know.

143

:

And I know, I know that the graphic

recording is, quite, uh, useful thing for

144

:

people who fit into the category of neuro

spicy, which is kind of a wide category,

145

:

but anyone who has attention deficit,

eye activity, um, Any kind of part of

146

:

the spectrum of autism or anything like

that, where distraction and, attention

147

:

being, being able to remain locked in.

148

:

My kids are using the

words locked in a lot.

149

:

Have you heard that expression?

150

:

I'm locking in, I'm doing my

chemistry homework or something.

151

:

But for them to, for, for people who

are distracted easily, sitting at a

152

:

conference, listening to a speaker do a

keynote for 45 minutes, if they've got a,

153

:

Michellle: Mm.

154

:

Debbie: they've got a, well, sometimes

those keynotes are incredible and

155

:

amazing, but, but if you've, you can

still be listening with your full

156

:

audio attention, but to see a drawing

coming to life while you're listening,

157

:

just gives this extra thing to focus

on and to relax into and it just makes

158

:

everything stick more in your brain.

159

:

I think.

160

:

Yeah,

161

:

Michellle: because we're visual.

162

:

So to say that just is like, you're

not losing yourself in the words.

163

:

You can actually watch it as it happens.

164

:

And they're not, for me, I think

that it would, it would sit better

165

:

in my brain when I see that drawing.

166

:

I go, Oh yeah, I get it.

167

:

I understand what they're saying because

she, she drew this and she did that.

168

:

So

169

:

Bec: Just much more engaging, isn't it?

170

:

Michellle: engaging is the word.

171

:

Yeah.

172

:

You're amazing.

173

:

You are

174

:

Bec: you get into it, Deb?

175

:

How did you know that

you were this clever?

176

:

Debbie: No, it.

177

:

Stop

178

:

Michellle: embarrassed, Bec.

179

:

Debbie: So I've come from a

background of graphic design.

180

:

So, uh, accidentally met somebody who

did this work probably 20 years ago.

181

:

When I was living in Brisbane,

back in the time when everyone

182

:

had a home phone, not a mobile.

183

:

And I answered the home phone and

this woman was calling to talk to my

184

:

flatmate and she did this work for

one of the big consultancy companies.

185

:

And she was describing

what she did for a job.

186

:

Well, you know, like you normally go, Oh

yeah, I'll just take a message and you

187

:

write it down, but I'm not like that.

188

:

Cause I like to talk too.

189

:

Michellle: Really?

190

:

Debbie: yeah, like chat.

191

:

And ended up talking to , this

girl, her name is Jack ended up

192

:

talking to her for about an hour.

193

:

She was describing what she did and

it sounded like running away with a

194

:

circus on the back of a glittering

unicorn to me when she described it.

195

:

, and it was just something

that I knew existed and.

196

:

It took a while for my life to turn

in, get to a situation where it was

197

:

something I could start doing more of.

198

:

And, , 2017 turned it all

around, dropped graphic design

199

:

and have been drawing pictures

200

:

ever since.

201

:

Michellle: Absolutely amazing.

202

:

It's so cool.

203

:

Debbie: Yep.

204

:

I love it.

205

:

I

206

:

Michellle: Love it.

207

:

Debbie: Very lucky.

208

:

Bec: everybody a bit of an

example of, of the work.

209

:

Michellle: Yeah.

210

:

Debbie: how

211

:

Michellle: what would you draw us?

212

:

Like, how would you draw us?

213

:

Like, this conversation?

214

:

Debbie: so how about if I do, how

about after this, I tell you what

215

:

we'll do girls after this chat.

216

:

Um, Send me the audio and I

will listen to it and draw a

217

:

graphic recording of our chat

218

:

Michellle: Amazing.

219

:

Debbie: um, and then you guys

can share it on socials and that

220

:

way your people who are listening

to this will be like, I get it.

221

:

Because I think it is, especially

if you're a visual learner and I'm

222

:

here describing it to you in your

ears, it's, yeah, you need to see it.

223

:

You need to see it happening.

224

:

I mean, my Instagram is

also full of, you know.

225

:

My work as well.

226

:

And, um,

227

:

Bec: That'll be very cool.

228

:

Michellle: Yeah, that'd be so cool.

229

:

Debbie: let's do that.

230

:

Not right now though.

231

:

Not right now.

232

:

Cause I can't do the talking and

do the drawing at the same time.

233

:

Michellle: Yeah.

234

:

Bec: not a multitasker.

235

:

Debbie: like

236

:

Bec: Good girl.

237

:

If there were Olympic events

for everyday skills, What

238

:

would you win a gold medal in?

239

:

Debbie: oh, okay.

240

:

my husband would say.

241

:

But I would get a gold medal

in messing up the kitchen.

242

:

It's a particular skill I have,

uh, because I like to use all of

243

:

the pots and pans when I cook.

244

:

Can't help myself.

245

:

There's always a special sauce that you

need to whip up in a tiny saucepan, and

246

:

then there's, you've got to, you know,

roast some nuts in another saucepan.

247

:

It is a

248

:

Bec: So he loves doing the

dishes after you then, clearly.

249

:

Debbie: well, I don't,

I wouldn't say loves it.

250

:

Michellle: But he does

251

:

Debbie: don't think he loves it,

but he, yeah, he does it a bit,

252

:

but , do you know what I like?

253

:

I like cleaning up the

kitchen while watching a show.

254

:

I

255

:

Michellle: Oh,

256

:

Debbie: just like having my iPad, which is

obviously my best friend, having my iPad

257

:

on the kitchen bench and headphones on and

just, , watching a show while I wash up.

258

:

It's just a little bit of downtime.

259

:

Sometimes I do that while

I'm cooking my meals as well.

260

:

Bec: What are you watching?

261

:

Debbie: Look, I've just

rewatched Ted Lasso.

262

:

Michellle: I love Ted Lasso.

263

:

Debbie: Oh, yeah.

264

:

Michellle: Is he just not

the most beautiful man?

265

:

Debbie: Glorious.

266

:

Look, I love so many of the

characters in that show.

267

:

I love Keely as

268

:

Michellle: Yep.

269

:

Bec: he's underrated.

270

:

Michellle: and just how they, you

watch from the start to the end, how

271

:

they just grew on you and they all

mature or they changed in some way.

272

:

Like I just found it such

a beautiful piece to watch.

273

:

It was so much more to it than soccer.

274

:

Debbie: Yeah, yeah, some very good writing

275

:

Bec: it's like there's

layers, layers and layers.

276

:

Yeah.

277

:

Michellle: Yeah.

278

:

Debbie: and layers.

279

:

Bec: my

280

:

Debbie: Yeah, so I just rewatched

that because I was like, I'm just

281

:

waiting for another show that gets me.

282

:

You guys might need to give me some tips.

283

:

Michellle: Well, I just

watched a show,, called Fake.

284

:

It's got Asher Keddie and David Whedon.

285

:

Debbie: Oh, we love those.

286

:

Michellle: It's it's really good.

287

:

I always find that David Whedon

plays that ick kind of character.

288

:

Like he's always the bad guy

289

:

Debbie: Yeah, yeah.

290

:

Bec: It gives you the ick.

291

:

Michellle: he gives me the

characters that he plays.

292

:

Like he portrays

293

:

Debbie: He's good at it.

294

:

Yeah.

295

:

Michellle: at it.

296

:

And so Asher Keddie, honestly,

297

:

Bec: I love her.

298

:

Michellle: she was amazing.

299

:

Like she just threw

herself into that character

300

:

Debbie: Yeah.

301

:

Michellle: and she was brilliant.

302

:

She didn't walk away with

the gold Logie last night.

303

:

I don't know.

304

:

She should have.

305

:

Bec: Who won the gold Logie anyway?

306

:

I don't even know.

307

:

Michellle: I'm not sure.

308

:

Debbie: I do know because

I saw it this morning

309

:

Michellle: It wasn't , Boy

Swallows Universe, that

310

:

Debbie: no,

311

:

Bec: Hang on.

312

:

I'm going to Google it.

313

:

Debbie: there was

314

:

Bec: Who won the gold Logie?

315

:

Larry!

316

:

Larry Emder!

317

:

Debbie: Emder,

318

:

Michellle: Oh, what did he do?

319

:

That was so amazing.

320

:

Anyway, Asha Keddie should have

321

:

Debbie: deal or no deal or something,

322

:

Bec: No, he's on the morning show

with, , Kylie, whatever her name is.

323

:

I don't know.

324

:

I feel bad not knowing

her name, but anyway.

325

:

Michellle: Anyway, so

326

:

Bec: the

327

:

Michellle: should watch Fake.

328

:

It's just about online dating.

329

:

Bec: What's it on?

330

:

Michellle: I believe

it is on, , Paramount,

331

:

Bec: Ah, yep.

332

:

Michellle: but it , might've

been like a Foxtel.

333

:

It's really good.

334

:

She she's just such a

brilliant, versatile actress.

335

:

So is he actually like,

he really gave me that.

336

:

And his character really was, Oh,

337

:

Debbie: Yeah,

338

:

Bec: And you know what else?

339

:

I think you'll like Deb,

Presumed Innocent on Apple TV.

340

:

Debbie: ah, I have started that.

341

:

I have started that.

342

:

It is, yeah, it's a lot, isn't it?

343

:

It's pretty intense.

344

:

Um, the other one I watched a

couple of episodes when I was

345

:

on a plane last week or the week

before of, , gentleman in Moscow.

346

:

Michellle: Oh, I did say that.

347

:

Debbie: Have you read the book?

348

:

Because the book is one of the best books.

349

:

I was just, it's glorious, like start

to finish, it covers like a real massive

350

:

span in history, like from before the

first world war to after the second

351

:

world war set in Moscow , and the,

main character, , Alexander, who.

352

:

His account is he's delightful

the whole way through.

353

:

Like he's just the most

charming, delightful character.

354

:

And they've got, Oh no, I'm having a

brain freeze of, um, who plays him.

355

:

Who's

356

:

Bec: What's it called again?

357

:

Debbie: a gentleman in Moscow.

358

:

Because the, um,

359

:

gentle,

360

:

Bec: And is the book the same name?

361

:

Debbie: Ewan McGregor,

362

:

Bec: Oh, I love him.

363

:

Debbie: he, he's fabulous.

364

:

Like you couldn't have cast it better.

365

:

He's so wonderful in that role.

366

:

So I've seen two episodes on that, but it

is, it's on, I think it's on Paramount,

367

:

Michellle: or is it on Netflix?

368

:

Debbie: No, it's, it's, it's

on one that I don't have.

369

:

Michellle: Okay,

370

:

Debbie: So I saw it , on Qantas and, um.

371

:

Michellle: now you have to try to find it.

372

:

So many good shows,

373

:

Debbie: more.

374

:

I need to fly more.

375

:

I've got a few flights coming up, so I'll

376

:

Michellle: keep

377

:

Debbie: in a few more Fs.

378

:

Bec: You didn't let us

379

:

Debbie: Yeah.

380

:

Yeah.

381

:

?

Bec: Okay.

382

:

Can I just, so I want

to talk about something.

383

:

Debbie just recently

joined the fifties club.

384

:

Michellle: Can I just ask one thing?

385

:

Deb, when I saw you the other day,

you sang me a song about turning 50.

386

:

Could you please sing the song?

387

:

Sing it.

388

:

Debbie: I don't know what

you're talking about.

389

:

Michellle: Yes, I saw you.

390

:

I dropped something off the other

day and you sang a song about

391

:

turning 50 and I was in tears.

392

:

Bec: She just obviously

made it up on the spot.

393

:

Debbie: remember every

funny thing I say, Michelle.

394

:

There's too many.

395

:

Michellle: You are

396

:

Debbie: did I say?

397

:

Michellle: You sang a song

from Saturday Night Live

398

:

Debbie: Oh, no, that wasn't a song.

399

:

That wasn't a song.

400

:

That was a line.

401

:

From, so the incredible comedian, comedic

actress, Molly Shannon did this bit, on

402

:

SNL where she turned up at a thing and she

said, my name's Sally O'Malley and I'm 50.

403

:

I'm 50 years old and I can kick and I can

stretch and I can kick because I'm 50.

404

:

It's not a song, it's

405

:

Michellle: Sounds like a song.

406

:

Debbie: fantastic bit of

footage that if you google Molly

407

:

Shannon SNL 50, you'll find it.

408

:

Michellle: Maybe because you were

kicking and you were so theatrical, I

409

:

Debbie: yeah, I was, yeah, I

410

:

Bec: the Elaine dance as she was

411

:

Michellle: like, she was like doing a

whole, like, I can kick, I can sing.

412

:

Debbie: I

413

:

Michellle: Oh, she's going to do it now.

414

:

Debbie: No, I'm not doing it now.

415

:

I'm just, I'm not gonna, I'm

not dressed appropriately.

416

:

Bec: Anyway, Deb would had this

amazing 50th get together where

417

:

she had a beautiful book clubbers.

418

:

But one of the things I loved

about your 50th was the graphic.

419

:

Debbie: Oh,

420

:

Bec: So her beautiful friends made these

headbands with, um, textures sticking

421

:

out of them for the graphic part.

422

:

And then they all learnt

how to play on the recorder,

423

:

Debbie: happy birthday.

424

:

Bec: birthday.

425

:

And it was glorious.

426

:

And I loved

427

:

Debbie: that we all learnt to play on

428

:

Bec: Hot cross buns.

429

:

Michellle: hot cross buns.

430

:

Debbie: terrorise our Parents

with, they all, all like

431

:

there would have been 15 them.

432

:

I reckon

433

:

Bec: So beautiful.

434

:

It was

435

:

Debbie: of my mates.

436

:

I had no idea what was happening.

437

:

I've never laughed so hard in my life.

438

:

I've actually just shared a bit

of footage of that on, on my

439

:

socials just before just today.

440

:

Cause I was thinking this

would make a funny reel,

441

:

Bec: It was so good.

442

:

As

443

:

Debbie: Yes.

444

:

That was my mate, Paul Broadhurst.

445

:

He apparently, his brain exploded

when he thought of it, like call

446

:

it starting and a, an ensemble

called the graphic recorders to.

447

:

perform for me who is a graphic recorder.

448

:

Hilarious.

449

:

Yeah.

450

:

He, yeah, he's funny.

451

:

Bec: So

452

:

Debbie: It was pretty cool.

453

:

Bec: It was lots of fun.

454

:

So good.

455

:

But now that you've hit 50,

456

:

Debbie: Yeah.

457

:

Bec: you're automatically

going to be the wise person.

458

:

Debbie: Oh, really though.

459

:

Bec: Yeah.

460

:

Debbie: don't know if it

461

:

Bec: so.

462

:

Yeah.

463

:

Yeah.

464

:

What words would you tell

your 18 year old self?

465

:

If you could go back and

say, Deb, I love you.

466

:

Listen to me.

467

:

Debbie: It's a good question.

468

:

And I don't know.

469

:

Cause it's one of those things

when you think about back and

470

:

having a stern word to yourself.

471

:

And like, I wouldn't want to say anything

that would make me choose any different

472

:

thing, like any different path than

what I've chosen because, and, and the

473

:

path was super wobbly for the first,

you know, through, like I, left uni

474

:

halfway through a degree and then tried

something else and tried something else.

475

:

And it took a while for me to

find my way into graphic design.

476

:

And that was completely by accident.

477

:

And then graphic recording, I found

my way into it completely by accident.

478

:

So I think I would say, look,

look for the open doors.

479

:

Because I feel like, that's what

I did, like, without realising it.

480

:

it was just always, say yes to

everything and, and then work it out.

481

:

Work out how you can make it happen.

482

:

Bec: Yeah.

483

:

And maybe that the messy

in the middle part is okay.

484

:

Debbie: Oh yeah.

485

:

Yeah.

486

:

Yeah.

487

:

Michellle: sort of like, you know,

growing up, we were always like, and,

488

:

and we do push onto our kids as well.

489

:

You've got to have a plan.

490

:

You've got to do this.

491

:

You've got to do that.

492

:

And then, you know, like, even if I

think back to my life, it's like, I

493

:

have zigzag, but zigzagging is good.

494

:

Debbie: I think zig zagging

gives you a more rounded.

495

:

experience of life.

496

:

And I know, like, I know I'm

saying it to my kids too.

497

:

So I have two boys, and one is 17,

year 11, and one is 13, year 7.

498

:

And the 17 year old, you know,

the sub, like, he loves music.

499

:

amazing on the trumpet.

500

:

He plays French horn too.

501

:

, he's had lots of cool opportunities

over the last few years come to him.

502

:

for music and I just keep saying to

him, just say yes and work it out, you

503

:

know, and it's, you know, and he's the

subjects he's chosen to do for his,

504

:

, VCE, I'm like, Mate, do the things that

you love doing, that you do well in.

505

:

Like, don't pick maths because

you feel like you're going

506

:

to need maths down the track.

507

:

I mean, I don't know, what do you reckon?

508

:

I just think, , do the subjects

that you love, that you do well in,

509

:

because high school's hard enough.

510

:

So, do stuff that you love.

511

:

Bec: matter.

512

:

Michellle: No, and that

513

:

Bec: if we, like, if it's one thing

like that we should be pushing onto

514

:

our kids is that what you think

matters in high school doesn't matter.

515

:

And if you want to do something,

there will always be a path.

516

:

There will always be a way.

517

:

Hmm.

518

:

Yeah.

519

:

Michellle: I think this is a really

good subject to have because there's

520

:

so many parents that would be going

through with their kids choosing

521

:

subjects and things like that.

522

:

Debbie: Mm.

523

:

Michellle: know that for mine, my son

had no interest in going to university.

524

:

And I remember I was mortified.

525

:

I was like, why am I

sending you to this school?

526

:

And they said to me,

it's not your journey.

527

:

It's not let him choose.

528

:

And then when Georgia went through it,

she was not going to uni straight away.

529

:

She wanted to zigzag her way through.

530

:

She's just about to graduate as a teacher.

531

:

Debbie: Mm.

532

:

Michellle: matter what path you choose.

533

:

You always going to get there in the end.

534

:

And I think that as parents, we

need to not be so strict on you

535

:

must, you must go to university.

536

:

You must do the hardest

math and this and that.

537

:

Do, let them do what finds

them joy, because they'll

538

:

still get there in the end.

539

:

They might not go direct,

but they'll get there.

540

:

Like we did, like you did, like

Beck did, like people listening

541

:

will be going, yeah, you know, I

think I did zigzag through life.

542

:

Debbie: Yeah.

543

:

Bec: And I did.

544

:

And I think it doesn't matter.

545

:

Debbie: ice skating!

546

:

Hahahaha!

547

:

Michellle: Yes.

548

:

Bec: yeah, do, yeah, do whatever

brings you joy, because that's when

549

:

you're gonna shine the most anyway.

550

:

Debbie: Yeah, yeah.

551

:

Bec: do it.

552

:

Debbie: And Toby does.

553

:

Like,

554

:

Bec: everything is figureoutable.

555

:

I, I say like, you don't need

to have a clear path right now,

556

:

just, it'll work itself out.

557

:

Debbie: yeah, yeah, yeah.

558

:

And the subjects, he's chosen

like, they're not easy subjects.

559

:

He's doing chemistry and, , computer

science and things like that.

560

:

But he finds them easy in a, like

it's not a constant, he doesn't feel

561

:

like he's, butting his head up against

something or stressed about it.

562

:

Like he finds, it interesting.

563

:

So it's easy for him to learn.

564

:

Michellle: and that's what it's all about

is , finding something that they've,

565

:

that they find the joy in and they

don't lose the joy in doing something,

566

:

Debbie: Yeah.

567

:

Michellle: the subject that they enjoy.

568

:

Yep.

569

:

Debbie: Yeah.

570

:

Yeah.

571

:

Yes.

572

:

Bec: And then if you, um, if, if

a movie was to be made about your

573

:

life, who would you choose to play?

574

:

You?

575

:

Yeah.

576

:

Debbie: see, you've talked all about

Asha Keddie and I think, oh, no,

577

:

I think, yeah, I'd like Asha.

578

:

Cause do you remember her character

in, uh, in Offspring, how it just had

579

:

that kind of hot messness about it.

580

:

Just that bit of, I think that would,

you know, I think she could maybe.

581

:

Emulate the Deb with a bit of that.

582

:

Yeah.

583

:

Bec: and how she would

always that awkward fumble.

584

:

I'm like, that's so me.

585

:

Like I'm the awkward fumble and

I'm like, she does that so well.

586

:

Hmm.

587

:

Debbie: Yeah.

588

:

Michellle: Deb.

589

:

I love that.

590

:

I love that you chose her, that

you didn't go like, I want to be

591

:

like Nicole Kidman or, you know,

592

:

Debbie: no.

593

:

Michellle: Yeah,

594

:

Debbie: No, too much poise

in Nicole Kidman for me.

595

:

I think I need, I want, I want

a little bit of um, Silly chaos,

596

:

because that's, that's what I'm like.

597

:

Michellle: I love it.

598

:

Bec: What about you, Michelle?

599

:

Who would you pick to play you?

600

:

Debbie: you pick?

601

:

Who

602

:

Michellle: Oh, I don't know, question.

603

:

Let me think on that one.

604

:

Debbie: Who would you

pick to play your husband?

605

:

Who would you pick to play Trav?

606

:

Beck?

607

:

Michellle: probably like a

Colin the, or someone like that.

608

:

You know, like I find him

quite even like Pi Brosnan or

609

:

someone, you know, like strong

610

:

Debbie: they feel quite poisey.

611

:

They feel like they've got

612

:

Michellle: calm.

613

:

I see.

614

:

I, I would choose someone that's

calm 'cause Mike is kind of calm

615

:

and I'm like a little bit, you

know, all over the shop at times,

616

:

Bec: I don't know.

617

:

Debbie: trying to decide.

618

:

Bec: Yeah.

619

:

Michellle: not David Winham.

620

:

Bec: No, not David Whelan.

621

:

No, sorry, David, but

622

:

no.

623

:

Michellle: David.

624

:

Bec: Oh, who would I pick?

625

:

I don't know.

626

:

Michellle: was a good question.

627

:

Debbie would.

628

:

Bec: Yeah.

629

:

Debbie: I mean, you've got to think too.

630

:

You're not playing in the

role opposite that person.

631

:

You're the actress playing

you is opposite that person.

632

:

So it's not like you get to

633

:

Michellle: Have a

634

:

pash.

635

:

Debbie: Have a pass

636

:

Bec: Damn.

637

:

That's where I was going.

638

:

I was trying to like,

639

:

Michellle: Oh, no, I was just

really thinking who I, I'd like,

640

:

you wouldn't want to kiss Colin

for, you know, the one from,

641

:

Bec: No, I know exactly

who you're talking about.

642

:

Nah.

643

:

Nah.

644

:

Nah.

645

:

Michellle: what about Piers Brosnan?

646

:

He's a bit of a spunk.

647

:

No?

648

:

Debbie: I

649

:

Michellle: Hmm.

650

:

Whatever.

651

:

Debbie: Beck.

652

:

Bec: Yeah.

653

:

Yeah.

654

:

They're too old, I think.

655

:

Michellle: we're, we're too

old, Deb, so that's all right.

656

:

Bec: No.

657

:

Well, hang on one second.

658

:

Yeah.

659

:

Yeah.

660

:

I'll be 48 this year, so

I'm not too far behind you.

661

:

Michellle: still got a

little bit to go, love.

662

:

Until you can kick and you can punch.

663

:

It's your 50 and your fabulous stretch.

664

:

Debbie: in

665

:

Bec: Cooper.

666

:

Do you know who I've always had a big

667

:

crush on Bradley Cooper?

668

:

Michellle: he looks like he needs a wash.

669

:

Debbie: some roles.

670

:

In

671

:

some

672

:

Michellle: he looks a bit sweaty.

673

:

Bec: No.

674

:

Debbie: No, he's got nice eyes.

675

:

Look at us.

676

:

Bec: Mmm.

677

:

Debbie: we're fawning.

678

:

Stop it.

679

:

Stop it.

680

:

First guest.

681

:

Who pulled out?

682

:

Bec: While you're with us, Debbie Wood, we

have this little thing that we do for each

683

:

podcast called Best Buys and this week

684

:

Debbie: I love your best buys.

685

:

Bec: we want you to share your best buy.

686

:

Tell us.

687

:

Debbie: Okay.

688

:

All right, I'm going to, but look, I

don't know if I should, but I'm going

689

:

to, and I'll probably regret it later.

690

:

But firstly, I know Michelle,

you've just been to Italy,

691

:

Michellle: Yes, I have.

692

:

Debbie: and so have I.

693

:

Michellle: We were there sort of like

694

:

Debbie: Like, yeah, like I

was gone and you arrived.

695

:

Michellle: within days,

Ships in the night, Yeah.

696

:

Um,

697

:

Debbie: So, while I was in Italy,

My friend that I was traveling with

698

:

introduced me to a thing called pistachio

cream and pistachio cream is like a

699

:

Nutella, but pistachios and it's green.

700

:

It doesn't have any chocolate in it.

701

:

And, we were in Milan and I was in a

department store and we were buying

702

:

some from their fancy food section.

703

:

And this, Lovely Milanese man said to me,

Oh, you need to try a spoonful of that

704

:

in your espresso coffee in the morning.

705

:

and Lucy and I were like, Ooh,

couldn't wait to go to bed that night.

706

:

So we could wake up in the

morning and having this.

707

:

Cause we were always having like

a mocha pot coffee in the mornings

708

:

when, where we were staying.

709

:

And, um, an espresso coffee with a

spoonful of pistachio cream in it is.

710

:

Ridiculous.

711

:

It's the most delicious thing.

712

:

So pistachio cream in

Australia is really expensive.

713

:

It's like for 200 gram jar, it's 20 bucks,

but Costco sell a pistachio cream and

714

:

the brand is called PISTI, which is a bit

715

:

Bec: on.

716

:

I need to write this down.

717

:

I'm going to get in my

notes section of my phone.

718

:

Everyone's going

719

:

Debbie: And, , and it's like

16 bucks, I think for a big

720

:

jar, it's about a 600 gram jar.

721

:

Michellle: Ooh.

722

:

Debbie: Now I don't want to tell you

guys about it because it's apparently

723

:

it's, it's sells out in a

second when I get the stocking.

724

:

And last time I was there, I bought three

jars and I ended up, I got the person

725

:

who made my birthday cake to put layers

of pistachio cream in a white chocolate.

726

:

Mud cake.

727

:

It's pretty fancy.

728

:

Michellle: and they stuff it in Italy,

don't they, with in their croissants.

729

:

Debbie: Oh, it's in croissants,

it's in those cross dollies

730

:

Michellle: cannolis, they had it

731

:

Debbie: I do one that's in

the shape of a it looks like a

732

:

Twisted shell

733

:

Michellle: yeah,

734

:

Debbie: and it's got pistachio cream

in it it's the most ridiculously

735

:

Michellle: bought some in, I bought

some cream in Florence and it was,

736

:

you know, maybe it was a little,

maybe 200 grams and it was expensive.

737

:

It was about 35 euro and

751

:

:

Bec: There's an Italian

restaurant in Moonee Ponds and

753

:

:

Bec: Mm.

756

:

Michellle: Well, I
