The Supreme Court will consider whether regular marijuana users can legally own guns. The case involves a Texas man charged with a felony for having a gun in his home and acknowledging being a regular pot user. The Justice Department appealed after a lower court struck down the law barring people who use any illegal drugs from having guns. The court will examine the constitutionality of this law under its expanded view of gun rights. The case marks another flashpoint in the application of the Supreme Court's new test for firearm restrictions, which requires a strong grounding in the nation's history.[0:0:59.49]] Grace And now the Cannabis Boomer reviews recent cannabis science publications.

First up is Moderating effect of participation in organized college sports on mental health and frequency of cannabis use in a national cohort by Zeiger. This study examined the relationship between cannabis use and mental health conditions, and the moderating effect of participation in organized college sports. Participation in organized college sports was found to moderate the relationship between cannabis use and diagnoses of depression, anxiety, and PTSD. This was a national cohort study that analyzed data from a large sample of college students. The findings suggest that participation in organized sports may be a protective factor against the negative mental health consequences associated with cannabis use among college students. Methodological shortcomings were the following: The study relied on self-reported data and did not account for other potential confounding factors that may influence the relationship between cannabis use and mental health.

The final article today is Frequency of cannabis use and symptoms of anxiety and depression: a cross-sectional analysis of the Colorado cannabis users health cohort by Steeger and colleagues. This cross-sectional study examined the association between cannabis use frequency and symptoms of anxiety and depression in a cohort of Colorado cannabis users. Frequent cannabis use was associated with higher symptoms of anxiety and depression, and frequent users with high symptom scores were less likely to use FDA-approved medications. The study used validated mental health scales and biological cannabinoid markers to assess cannabis use and mental health symptoms. The findings suggest that frequent cannabis use may not be an effective self-treatment for anxiety and depression, and that healthcare providers should consider the potential mental health implications of cannabis use. The cross-sectional design limits the ability to establish causal relationships, and the study was conducted in a specific population of Colorado cannabis users, which may limit the generalizability of the findings.
