July 7 1937 All Star Game at Griffith Stadium

History of the MLB All-Star game - 1937

American League 8,

National League 3

The big story of the game at Griffith Stadium in Washington wasn't the presence of President Franklin Roosevelt. Nor was it the slugging of Lou Gehrig. Nor was it the rat-a-tat-tat bat of Joe Medwick, whose line drives singed the already broiling air all afternoon.

It was an innocuous-looking play, an infield out that ended the bottom of the third inning, that stole the show. It marked the beginning of the end of Dizzy Dean's spectacular career. A 30-game winner in 1934, a 28-game winner in 1935, a 24-game winner in 1936 and well on his way to another big season in 1937 with a 12-7 record, Dean had become, with the retirement of Babe Ruth, baseball's most magnetic performer, its biggest drawing card.

With two out, Dizzy fired to Earl Averill, who cracked a low screamer that hit Dean on the foot. Averill was thrown out and Dean headed for the clubhouse, his three-inning stint over. In the clubhouse, it was discovered that Dean's toe was broken. A minor injury, but Dean and Cardinals management were too nonchalant and he returned to the mound before the toe was healed. It affected his delivery, he injured his arm and his golden days were over -- at the age of 26.

Starting for the AL for the fourth time in five years -- and winning his third game -- was Lefty Gomez. He held the NL to one hit over his three innings and was beneficiary of a booming two-run homer in the third by Lou Gehrig.

The entire game, in fact, was symbolic of Yankee dominance. Red Rolfe singled and tripled and drove in two runs, Joe DiMaggio singled before Gehrig's homer, Bill Dickey singled and doubled, Gehrig added a double to his homer and drove in four runs.
