Speaker:

Hey, everybody.

2

:

Welcome back to another edition

of the daily Bible podcast.

3

:

I am so low as a right now.

4

:

In fact, as I record this right.

5

:

As I record this, uh, our students

and their leaders and pastor, rod.

6

:

Our pilot and cars, and they're

driving down to blooming Grove

7

:

for the winter revival edition.

8

:

Um, the, the winter.

9

:

Uh, youth retreat.

10

:

So, uh, pray for them.

11

:

Pray.

12

:

Uh, right now.

13

:

You're listening to this.

14

:

I would even encourage you, maybe

press pause on this and stop and

15

:

pray for this weekend for them.

16

:

It's going to be Friday

as you're hearing this.

17

:

So this is day two for them technically

their first full day, though.

18

:

And pastor rod has some great

messages, great teaching prepared

19

:

on students in technology.

20

:

And that is such an evergreen subject

and topic as technology has a.

21

:

Larger and larger presence and

footprint in our lives and certainly

22

:

in the lives of our young people.

23

:

So he's going to be

helping them understand.

24

:

Uh, biblically, how do we approach this?

25

:

What do we do with this technology

is not going to go away.

26

:

And so we can say, man, I wish.

27

:

It wasn't this way.

28

:

I wish we didn't have this.

29

:

I wish we didn't have that.

30

:

And yet the reality is it's it's

not going away anytime soon.

31

:

And so as Christians, we

need to learn to live.

32

:

With technology in such a way

that we are good stewards of it,

33

:

that technology doesn't master us.

34

:

It doesn't enslave us, but

that we use it as a tool.

35

:

Or a resource, uh, to

better serve the Lord.

36

:

And so that's some of the focus this

weekend that pastor rod is going to

37

:

be driving home with the students,

a couple of things to pray for, uh,

38

:

pray for their time in small groups.

39

:

Uh, pray that the discussions

will be profitable and helpful.

40

:

Pray for the attention

span of the students.

41

:

Especially as they're coming in

on Saturday and the weekend we'll

42

:

have caught up to them by then.

43

:

They're going to be tired, pray that

they will focus, that they will pay

44

:

attention, that they will listen.

45

:

Well, Uh, to what pastor rod

has to say from the word of God.

46

:

Uh, pray that these things are,

are clear from the scriptures as

47

:

pastor rod teaches on this subject.

48

:

Uh, obviously you're not going to

find a Paul saying, this is how you

49

:

should use your phone anywhere in the

Bible, but the principles are there.

50

:

So pray that the connections are

easily made and that the students

51

:

see those connections from scripture.

52

:

And pray for them to respond

and to apply what they learn.

53

:

Not just to let this be a weekend where

they come home saying, yeah, it was fun.

54

:

And we had a good time with

friends and the content was good.

55

:

And I feel like I know more, but,

but pray that they would actually

56

:

act on what they hear and act on

what they learned this weekend.

57

:

And then.

58

:

Uh, last thing I would encourage

you to pray for is not all of

59

:

these students that are going on

this retreat are, are believers.

60

:

And so pray that pastor rod will

be able to take a subject like

61

:

how we interact with technology

and connect it to the gospel.

62

:

I know that's on his heart this weekend.

63

:

And so pray that he would be able to make

that connection smoothly and that it would

64

:

be evident in the hearing of the students

in that those that are not yet saved.

65

:

I would even be able to take a retreat

on something like how to engage

66

:

technology, you know, a proper way.

67

:

And, uh, perhaps come to faith as

a result of this weekend's retreat.

68

:

So those are some things to be

praying for even again right now,

69

:

push, pause on this, go and pray.

70

:

Pray for them.

71

:

Pray for pastor, rod, pray for the

leaders, pray for energy, pray for safety,

72

:

all the things you'd normally pray for,

and then pray for those points as well.

73

:

And then come back in

and we'll pick back up.

74

:

In fact, we'll do that right

now with Genesis 35 through 37.

75

:

Uh, Genesis 35, 30, 37.

76

:

We are continuing the

story obviously of Jacob.

77

:

And yet there's a couple other

players that come into the scene

78

:

here in these chapters, but,

uh, 35 verse first 15 verses of

79

:

chapter 35, all about confirmation.

80

:

Jacob is told to go to Bethel and

you'll remember Bethel is the place

81

:

where God at first appeared to him

with the ladder and the angels.

82

:

Uh, Ascending and descending

on the ladder there.

83

:

And so they're back there.

84

:

He goes back to Bethel and this time

God appears to him again and confirms

85

:

the promises of the Abrahamic covenant.

86

:

And again, the changing of his name from

Jacob to Israel, Israel then confirms

87

:

that yes, Bethel is named appropriately.

88

:

Jacob does Israel, Jacob one in the same

person, uh, Israel, Jacob now confirms

89

:

that Bethel is indeed named appropriately

for this was the second time that God

90

:

revealed himself to him in that place.

91

:

Bethel meaning.

92

:

Again, Uh, the house of God.

93

:

And so the covenant renewal here with

Jacob, the reconfirmation of things,

94

:

again, the name changes emphasized again,

even the, the, uh, the commandments,

95

:

the creation mandate that shows up

again, be fruitful and multiply.

96

:

Uh, that has to do more with his future

descendants than with his own children.

97

:

And so there's the creation mandate

be fruitful and multiply, but this is

98

:

more about the nation that's going to

come from Jacob than it is his own.

99

:

Offspring there.

100

:

And, uh, and so first 15

verses re reaffirmation confirm

101

:

confirmation confirming that indeed.

102

:

Uh, the covenant is in place

that, that God had chosen.

103

:

Jacob chosen Israel, and his

name was now going to be Israel,

104

:

which remember means God fights.

105

:

And God was going to continue to

fight on behalf of his people and

106

:

do great things through the nation.

107

:

Chapter 35 then verses 16 through 29.

108

:

In this section, uh, Rachel

and Isaac, both dime.

109

:

And so that this is a bit of a, a low

point, although there's a silver lining.

110

:

Even in the death of Rachel

in that, uh, Benjamin is born.

111

:

So as Rachel is dying, she is at the

same time giving birth to Benjamin and.

112

:

So Benjamin is, is born and Jacob calls

him Benjamin, even though Rachel wanted

113

:

to call him Ben Oni, uh, Ben Oni was

a name that meant if you look at the

114

:

footnote there, the ESV son of my sorrow

or son of my strength either way, but.

115

:

Uh, Jacob, his father instead.

116

:

Chooses to call him Benjamin

son of the right hand, the right

117

:

hand being the position of honor.

118

:

And so, uh, Benjamin is a.

119

:

As a special child to,

to Isaac or to Isaac, to.

120

:

Israel to, to Jacob.

121

:

And we're going to see that later

on, um, in the story of Joseph,

122

:

but Benjamin is the final son.

123

:

Uh, that Jacob's slash Israel

has borne to him by Rachel

124

:

his beloved wife, uh, Rachel's

children that she herself born to.

125

:

Uh, to Israel would have been, uh,

Joseph first and then Benjamin second.

126

:

And so Rachel dies and then the other

one that dies in this section is Isaac.

127

:

Uh, Jacob's dad.

128

:

He dies.

129

:

And he dies, not tragically in a

situation prematurely, as it appears

130

:

that Rachel had, but he dies of old

age and he dies at 180 years old.

131

:

Something else that happens in

this section, that's probably

132

:

worth just pointing out here.

133

:

You've got a, just a strange.

134

:

Interaction here where

Ruben goes off in and.

135

:

Um, Is is with bill.

136

:

Hi, if I can just keep it again.

137

:

PG here with bill hall, his

father's concubine, and this is a

138

:

strange scene and you might think,

okay, what what's going on here?

139

:

Uh, one commentator suggested this

and I think it's, it's possible.

140

:

That, uh, bill ha as Rachel's, um, maid

servant, uh, she would have been next

141

:

in line perhaps as the favored wife in.

142

:

Uh, in, in Israel's.

143

:

Uh, perspective here.

144

:

So you remember Israel, Jacob

loved Rachel more than Leah.

145

:

Well, Rubin, who does this act?

146

:

This a moral act, this wrong act.

147

:

He was the son of Leah.

148

:

And so he possibly could be looking out

for his mom by doing this to try to make

149

:

sure that bill hall was not going to take.

150

:

Rachel's places, the favored wife,

because of her connection there

151

:

to Rachel, maybe that's a little

bit of a stretch either way.

152

:

It's not a good situation.

153

:

It's not a good thing that

happens, but it does happen.

154

:

It is recorded here.

155

:

That's something that, that Ruben does.

156

:

And.

157

:

And again, I think we're starting to

see why Reuben and Simeon are both,

158

:

uh, passed over in terms of the, the,

the promise line here and the lineage

159

:

that, that Jude is really going to

be the one that, that, and not the

160

:

Judah is great in and of himself, but.

161

:

Uh, certainly these are not

great moves by Rubin here.

162

:

And then we'll see Simeon later on.

163

:

Chapter 36 then as we get into

this, this provides a deep dive.

164

:

For us into something that I

know you've been curious about,

165

:

and that is Esau's descendants.

166

:

I know you've been sitting here saying

yes, but what about the children of ISA?

167

:

I want to know all about them.

168

:

Well, if that's you.

169

:

Uh, you are unique and

here's your chapter.

170

:

Chapter 36 is the deep dive

of the descendants of Esau.

171

:

But there are a couple of things

to take note of here, even as we

172

:

go through this and we think to

ourselves, okay, this is a lot of names.

173

:

And what does this mean?

174

:

Oh, holy Bama.

175

:

Uh, I think that verse five, who

is holy Bama and At Cora, there's

176

:

a lot of names here and I don't

know what this is all about.

177

:

Couple things to note.

178

:

Look at verse eight, verse

eight is significant.

179

:

So Esau settled in the

hill country of sear.

180

:

And then it says Esau is Edam.

181

:

Okay.

182

:

Esau settled in the hill country

of Sierra Esau is eat them.

183

:

Eat them should be a name that rings

a bell for you because later on in the

184

:

new Testament or in the old Testament,

rather, we are going to encounter a

185

:

lot to do with the Edomites and the

Edomites are not going to be necessarily.

186

:

Pro or friendly to Israel.

187

:

Now we've heard that a lot.

188

:

Haven't we, this descendant had

these, this people, the Amalekites.

189

:

The Amorites.

190

:

All these EITs that are coming out

of all of these offspring of other of

191

:

other people loosely connected to the

central figures in the Bible here.

192

:

Again, we see a situation

where that's the case.

193

:

Aesop becomes the father of

the Edomites verse eight.

194

:

The Edomites are going to be

another thorn in Israel side.

195

:

Uh, you'll look at verse 12.

196

:

Talk about that again.

197

:

Esau's grandson is amyloid now.

198

:

Amylah is going to become

the father of the Amalekites.

199

:

The Amalekites are going to be

another people group that cause

200

:

problems for Israel down the road.

201

:

And then if you jump all the

way down to Genesis 36 31.

202

:

Uh, we find out that there are Kings

that come from Edam long before

203

:

there are any Kings that come from.

204

:

Uh, Israel.

205

:

So Esau his line produces Kings

before Jacob's line produces Kings.

206

:

That's just something that's of note here.

207

:

Now these are not Kings.

208

:

Uh, in terms of being

Kings of God's people.

209

:

But they are foreign Kings they're

pagan Kings they're Gentile Kings

210

:

that end up ruling in the land.

211

:

Even long before any of the

Israelite Kings come to the throne.

212

:

So there you go.

213

:

Eastlands descendants in chapter 36.

214

:

All right.

215

:

Chapter 37, we get to one of the

brighter spots in the Genesis account.

216

:

And that is the life of Joseph.

217

:

Uh, the life of Joseph and

yet the life of Joseph doesn't

218

:

necessarily start out spectacularly.

219

:

Uh, Joseph comes on the scene and.

220

:

Uh, Joseph is the loved son of Israel in.

221

:

Again, why?

222

:

Because he was born in the first born of

Rachel and Rachel was the beloved wife.

223

:

And so Joseph had a special spot.

224

:

In Israel and Jacobs, a purview in,

in his underwear, in his eye, he loved

225

:

Joseph and there was a unique love

for him and probably favored him.

226

:

Uh, wrongfully so and recognize him, gave

him a coat of many colors and it provoked

227

:

jealousy in the life of his brothers.

228

:

And Joseph doesn't do a whole

lot to help himself out here

229

:

in the opening of chapter 37.

230

:

He begins to tell his brothers about,

Hey, I had a couple of dreams here.

231

:

Let me share my dreams with you.

232

:

And.

233

:

Uh, you know, these

dreams are dreams that.

234

:

We'll come to fruition.

235

:

We're going to see that down

the road as we study the life

236

:

in the account of Joseph, but.

237

:

Probably would have been the better part

of wisdom for Joseph not to open up an

238

:

and talk about this with his brothers,

not to say, Hey, I had this dream and

239

:

you guys were all bowing down to me.

240

:

How cool is that?

241

:

And then.

242

:

He even has another dream that

he tells about his father and.

243

:

Here's the, the dream that I had,

uh, that, you know, the sun and

244

:

the stars and everything else that

they bowed down to me as well.

245

:

And it even leads his father

to rebuke him in verse 10.

246

:

What is this dream that you have dreamed?

247

:

Shall I?

248

:

And your mother and your brothers

and deed come and bow ourselves

249

:

to you before the ground.

250

:

And so Jacob there rebukes him

now, here's, what's interesting.

251

:

And this may raise some questions

and, and it gets a little bit messy.

252

:

And sometimes this is where the

chronology of things in Genesis caused

253

:

us to scratch our heads a little bit.

254

:

Uh, Jacob or Israel here

references the mother of Joseph.

255

:

Well, we just read.

256

:

In chapter 35, where Israel's

wife, Rachel, who was the

257

:

mother of Joseph has, has died.

258

:

And so is this backing up?

259

:

Is this, uh, predating that, or is

this just a general reference, maybe?

260

:

Uh it's as though bill hall or Leah became

his adopted mother at this point in.

261

:

And was standing in as

the figurehead there.

262

:

That's another suggestion here,

or is this chronologically been

263

:

arranged in some different way?

264

:

Uh, to show up at the end of the book

here as, as a point of emphasis of God's

265

:

sovereign protection and preservation of

his people through the life of Joseph.

266

:

I don't know that we can land

securely there, but it is interesting

267

:

when we know the detail like that.

268

:

When he says show I and your mother

and your brothers indeed come

269

:

and bow ourselves down to you.

270

:

Well, Who is the mother there?

271

:

Is it Rachel again?

272

:

Is this chronologically

out of order or is this.

273

:

Leah or bill hot or somebody that

was an adopted mother for Joseph.

274

:

We don't know, but.

275

:

Joseph doesn't necessarily start well

here because, uh, they, it says there in

276

:

verse 11, his brothers are jealous of him,

but his father kept the saying in mine.

277

:

So he's provoking things.

278

:

And that's where the rest of the chapter

dues verses 12 through 36 familiar story.

279

:

If you grew up in the church, you saw

this acted out on the felt boards, or you

280

:

saw it acted out in VeggieTales maybe.

281

:

I don't know if VeggieTales

has one on this.

282

:

Maybe it does, but.

283

:

Um, if it does, then, then

you guys will I'm sure.

284

:

Let me know.

285

:

Otherwise.

286

:

They should have, right.

287

:

This would have been an interesting one

anyways, that you've got the Joseph's

288

:

brothers hatching, a plot to kill him.

289

:

And that's what they want to do initially.

290

:

But they eventually decide with some

dissuasion actually from Rubin of

291

:

all people, Ruben, the guy that was

just not doing great things here.

292

:

He.

293

:

Is trying to kind of move to, to

spare his brother and whatever,

294

:

whatever his motives were.

295

:

Maybe he wanted to be

recognized by his dad more.

296

:

I don't know if his motives were entirely

pure, but God's going to use him at

297

:

least to slow the roll of the brothers

that they're not going to kill Joseph

298

:

right away eventually decide that,

that they can profit by his demise

299

:

rather than, than just killing him.

300

:

And so what they're going to do

is they're going to sell them into

301

:

a traveling group of notice here.

302

:

Ishmaelites Ishmaelites.

303

:

And so here you have Isaac

and Ishmael, you have that.

304

:

Conflict coming back to the surface.

305

:

Again, here's some descendants of Ishmael.

306

:

And they are there and they're going

to take Joseph and they're going to

307

:

take them down to Egypt where they're

going to sell them to Pottipher.

308

:

And we're going to see that this

is all part of God's plan, but

309

:

right now it's messy right now.

310

:

It is.

311

:

It is, it is heavy and is not good.

312

:

And, you know, that's just

a reminder to us that.

313

:

Family.

314

:

And here's family right on the,

the, the center stage and scripture

315

:

here, family can get messy.

316

:

Family can be difficult.

317

:

And some of you listening to

this, know this all too well,

318

:

and your family has been.

319

:

Hurt by sin against one another.

320

:

Your family has been hurt by

infighting and conflict and jealousy

321

:

and everything else and betrayal.

322

:

And here you have a

situation where you're in.

323

:

This is one of the greatest acts of

betrayal that we can conceive of.

324

:

They, they took him,

they held him hostage.

325

:

They eventually sell him.

326

:

To a, uh, slavery basically,

and, and go back and tell his

327

:

dad, Hey, he's, he's dead.

328

:

Look, this coat of his has been, uh, it

has evidence of his blood over it, though.

329

:

It was dipped in, in animal blood.

330

:

And, and yet what's happening.

331

:

E all throughout this, God is

sovereign all throughout this.

332

:

God is working.

333

:

He's orchestrating these events now.

334

:

The acts that took place, the

sinful actions were still sinful.

335

:

They were wrong.

336

:

They were evil.

337

:

They were wicked.

338

:

And yet God was ordaining

and sovereign over all of it.

339

:

Uh, such that Joseph would end up where

he's going to end up notice at the end

340

:

of the chapter, he ends up in Egypt and

that's going to be crucial to how God

341

:

is going to save and deliver his people.

342

:

And you know what it's even

that the very earliest.

343

:

Echoes of, of the building

cadence, that's going to climax

344

:

in the Exodus of God's people.

345

:

And then later on that concept of

the Exodus is going to serve as

346

:

the, the template as the type of the

greater Exodus that is going to be.

347

:

Worked for us at the cross that we are

going to be delivered, not from slavery

348

:

in Egypt, but slavery from our own sin.

349

:

So this is the very beginning of this,

this infighting in the family, and

350

:

God is going to use this in fighting.

351

:

T to turn into something that

is much bigger than any of

352

:

them could have imagined.

353

:

And it's all his sovereignty at

work in the background, which

354

:

is super comforting for us.

355

:

Let me pray for us.

356

:

And then we will be done with this

episode of the daily Bible podcast.

357

:

We thank you for our students

right now, as they're on the way

358

:

down as I'm recording this to

their retreat, we pray for safety.

359

:

And just an awesome weekend.

360

:

I pray for pastor, rod for.

361

:

Uh, just energy to be able to, to lead

well this weekend and to preach well this

362

:

weekend and that these messages would

be transformative for these students.

363

:

Even for some, perhaps eternally

transformative for them.

364

:

And so we ask that you would just.

365

:

Uh, put your, your kind hand of

favor upon our students and our

366

:

leaders as they're away from us.

367

:

Uh, just through Saturday and that

we would hear great reports that even

368

:

Sunday morning from the weekend, we

thank you for this opportunity for them.

369

:

We thank you for your word.

370

:

And we thank you for this

text that we just read.

371

:

And we just walked through.

372

:

And how you are always, always in control

over everything, even despite what

373

:

it might look like to us at the time.

374

:

And so we thank you for this reality.

375

:

We pray this in Jesus name.

376

:

Amen.

377

:

All right.

378

:

Keep, bring your Bibles y'all and

tune in again tomorrow for another

379

:

edition of the daily Bible podcast by.
