Speaker:

This episode is brought to you by the Old Dominion Athletic Foundation.

Speaker:

Because of you, we create winners in the classroom, in

Speaker:

athletic competition and in life.

Speaker:

Become a member today.

Speaker:

A little intro issue there.

Speaker:

What happened there?

Speaker:

Uh, I don't know.

Speaker:

Everything looked good over here.

Speaker:

Yeah, it looked good

Speaker:

to me.

Speaker:

Oh, okay.

Speaker:

Oh, it was just me then.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

That's

Speaker:

cool.

Speaker:

It's

Speaker:

all as

Speaker:

ucb.

Speaker:

That's, that's usually true.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

Well, welcome Monarch fans to the Hudson Homers podcast.

Speaker:

Hey, got CB here.

Speaker:

Got Finny here.

Speaker:

Yes, CB tried to get his yay in.

Speaker:

I think his timing messed him up there a little bit.

Speaker:

I have no idea.

Speaker:

I didn't see anything, but,

Speaker:

but, but before we get going, a big shout out to CB's mom for once again.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Crushing the chocolate chip cookie order.

Speaker:

I mean, yeah, our guys, she, she, I'll bet she has made 10 tons of chocolate

Speaker:

chip cookies since crazy mouth and they are always amazing and I never

Speaker:

see anything but an empty Tupperware.

Speaker:

We need to start giving those back to her.

Speaker:

Um,

Speaker:

yeah, we don't it there, she's okay if she doesn't give 'em back, but it, it's, that

Speaker:

is, is appreciated if nothing else because

Speaker:

you guys hate

Speaker:

filling 'em

Speaker:

back up.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

We, we need to start doing a better job with that because

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Um, those things aren't free and, uh, the, the cookies are amazing.

Speaker:

Um, you know, it, it reminded me, the latest one reminded me of when

Speaker:

Coach Guz was with us, you know?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And she'd bring those in and he'd always go, Ooh.

Speaker:

I thought of that the other day when, uh, I thought of Guz the other day.

Speaker:

I, I think it ended up being fog, but at first I thought maybe it was like

Speaker:

smoke from then cleaning a grill.

Speaker:

Uh, and I was like, Ooh, hot

Speaker:

dogs.

Speaker:

Oh yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Ooh.

Speaker:

Smells like ham cheeseburgers.

Speaker:

Yeah, yeah,

Speaker:

yeah.

Speaker:

The

Speaker:

smoke from the grill doesn't travel into the dugout like it used to.

Speaker:

And it was over in

Speaker:

round

Speaker:

alley.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Well, yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

But it will next year again, so, um, that'll be cool.

Speaker:

I'll be there.

Speaker:

And so, speaking of, uh, I know we got, you know, some

Speaker:

recaps to go, but I got a good.

Speaker:

Uh, story for the, the VCU game on Wednesday.

Speaker:

Of course, we were, you know, very much a back and forth game and, uh,

Speaker:

we, we weren't pitching, you know, like home run derby for a while there.

Speaker:

We weren't pitching very well early, um, but we were scrapping kind

Speaker:

of back in it and back and forth, and we go into the, you know, top

Speaker:

of the ninth, down 10 to nine.

Speaker:

And the whole day I was a little bit nostalgic just because thinking

Speaker:

about Key Dog coach keys and mm-hmm.

Speaker:

And Guz, you know, with that potentially being our last time

Speaker:

ever playing at the Diamond.

Speaker:

Just so many memories there.

Speaker:

I worked there for six years with Paul, you know, competing against VCU.

Speaker:

Um, at ODU.

Speaker:

We, we've, we went back and looked at the, the records.

Speaker:

I think we've, in 15 years, we've only lost once or twice there.

Speaker:

Um, so we've, we've won a lot there and.

Speaker:

Um, so we're down ten nine, you know, I go jogging out the third,

Speaker:

um, as slow as I run out there.

Speaker:

I don't know if you can call it jog anymore, but I go out the third and

Speaker:

I'm thinking, well guys, if this is the last one, I'm gonna need both of you.

Speaker:

I know y'all are watching.

Speaker:

I'm gonna need a little help here.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And sure enough, when the short stop threw just the tailormade

Speaker:

double play ball down the right field line and let us score two run.

Speaker:

I looked and I said, there you go.

Speaker:

You know, I, I'm just guys key dog eating some pizza and, and watching

Speaker:

the game and one of 'em stuck their foot out and said, kick it.

Speaker:

And uh, there we go.

Speaker:

And the thing about that game was we were swing the bats good too.

Speaker:

You know, it was an offensive game.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

That's as small as I can ever remember.

Speaker:

The diamond playing.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I was, I ran into, um.

Speaker:

Connor Overton, uh, he, he and Josh Eldridge were there.

Speaker:

And you know, Connor, he played there with you guys at ODU U. He

Speaker:

played there for the squirrels for about, I think a year and a half.

Speaker:

And he is like, I have never seen this happen here.

Speaker:

No.

Speaker:

Um, and, and you know, fortunately, um, we threw the ball.

Speaker:

We didn't throw the ball well at the beginning of that game, but the last five

Speaker:

innings we did, you know, five zeros and

Speaker:

outstanding.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

The guys, the guys really, uh, uh, Ben Tanton in particular and, and, and

Speaker:

Bailey Mattel both, you know, threw up four in four zeros in a row to,

Speaker:

so we get the, we get the, you know, hard talk all 10 win and um, send

Speaker:

a diamond out, uh, on a good note.

Speaker:

So that was a good mid midweek road win for us.

Speaker:

And that's always a hard fought game with them, certainly.

Speaker:

And we had nice weather.

Speaker:

It was warm and

Speaker:

yeah,

Speaker:

so, uh, that was a good thing.

Speaker:

Yeah, Bailey looked unhittable in the final two innings of that game.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I mean, guys were going up there buttoning with nobody on.

Speaker:

I mean, you could tell they, they just were not very confident going up there.

Speaker:

Well, and part of that Bailey was pitching great.

Speaker:

It was almost dark by then too, by the way.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I looked at, he goes, Hey man, I think five 30 we're

Speaker:

gonna have to call this thing.

Speaker:

Yeah, this was about 4 45.

Speaker:

And I said, I can't see now.

Speaker:

Sounds good to me.

Speaker:

Like, um, but you know, the other thing that, that, in that game, you

Speaker:

know, we had a lot of big hits, um, as well, but, uh, I thought we played

Speaker:

fantastic defense and we've been very up and down defensively, our guys,

Speaker:

I've been on their butts about it.

Speaker:

Um, but Will Johnson and Maverick Stallings in

Speaker:

particular really played well?

Speaker:

Um, will made a number of, of really good plays and so did Mav uh, Mav m's

Speaker:

been playing good defense all, all year.

Speaker:

We've, we've gotta get cleaned up on the left side and it's not that

Speaker:

those guys aren't capable, they just have to focus more for one of 'em.

Speaker:

It's more focused.

Speaker:

The other one he needs to like, uh, breathe through his eyelids, you know?

Speaker:

Um, so give some

Speaker:

garter belts.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah, we gotta work on that.

Speaker:

But they're capable.

Speaker:

I see it every day.

Speaker:

They're good defenders and with plenty of, you know, the skillsets plenty there.

Speaker:

Um, we just gotta get, and some of it I think is, is getting back to getting

Speaker:

the reps. You know, we had a very, uh, disjointed first month of the season.

Speaker:

I mean, we'd have, get a game in or two, and then we'd have two or three

Speaker:

days of rain and then we'd get in a game and we weren't able to get in.

Speaker:

It's not an excuse by any means.

Speaker:

You guys know me well enough for that, but.

Speaker:

Just reality.

Speaker:

We weren't able to get any work in.

Speaker:

Um, it was just getting the games in and playing.

Speaker:

Sometimes we weren't even getting ground balls in between.

Speaker:

And I think, you know, this weekend we were able to get back to a

Speaker:

little bit of a rhythm there, even though the weather was crappy

Speaker:

Friday when the fog world, you know,

Speaker:

nuts

Speaker:

but weird in light of the person saying not to jumble all the games together.

Speaker:

Anything else about that, that, uh, Wednesday game, uh, come,

Speaker:

comes to mind for you guys?

Speaker:

Yeah, I'll, I'll just throw in like I agree with you.

Speaker:

I've never seen that many home runs hit outta that ballpark in any single game.

Speaker:

It was almost like a wind tunnel to left center, but your team maintained a ton of

Speaker:

energy even when they were down 10 to six.

Speaker:

And CB and I were actually sitting together for part of that game

Speaker:

talking like, this is the midweek.

Speaker:

We know that we're strong on the back end of our bullpen with what

Speaker:

we have left, and we can just hang around here and chip away.

Speaker:

We're gonna be all right.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

And that's exactly what happened.

Speaker:

Plus a little bit of intervention from, uh, people that couldn't be seen to make

Speaker:

sure that that double Taylor made double play ball ended up, uh, down the line.

Speaker:

Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure.

Speaker:

That was Well, sometimes you get unlucky and sometimes you get lucky.

Speaker:

So we're not giving any of 'em back.

Speaker:

No, no.

Speaker:

So, yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And then I was gonna say Friday, I feel like the game changed a little

Speaker:

bit as the fog rolled in, but that was honestly a pretty good ball game.

Speaker:

Mean four two.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

It's a really good opponent.

Speaker:

Tough pitching

Speaker:

stuff.

Speaker:

It was, yeah, it was.

Speaker:

And they, you know, they, they, we knew they could pitch, um, the two guys

Speaker:

they threw, I thought threw fantastic.

Speaker:

We had, you know, uh, the same amount of hits.

Speaker:

We just didn't get the big one.

Speaker:

And the difference in that ball game though.

Speaker:

Was we made three errors on balls that, you know, plays that need to be made.

Speaker:

And I thought Ky threw the ball really well for us.

Speaker:

I

Speaker:

That's about as well as you throw all season.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I keep track of it was, I keep track of how many pitches guys throw, you

Speaker:

know, how many potential pitches when you make an error on a routine ball.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

It costs you guy and I and I, I I think we cost him 25 pitches in that game.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Um, which is the difference in coming out after the fourth or

Speaker:

mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Fifth and maybe getting through sixth.

Speaker:

And so we, we talk about that a lot.

Speaker:

I, I really believe and know we tip your hat to them 'cause they pitch,

Speaker:

pitched well may pitches when they need to and the plays, but we kind of gave

Speaker:

'em the game, uh, if we're being honest.

Speaker:

And that's disappointing on a Friday.

Speaker:

You gotta be better than that.

Speaker:

Uh, I think we've been swinging the bats, you know, all week.

Speaker:

We sw the bats pretty well.

Speaker:

We didn't score on Friday and Saturday.

Speaker:

Um, Saturday was just, again, we got behind too early and, you know, with

Speaker:

another game to play, we just couldn't burn up a bunch of guys, um, Saturday.

Speaker:

So that's just kind of how it goes sometimes.

Speaker:

But I told him, I said, there's gonna be times in, in league play

Speaker:

where you lose the first two.

Speaker:

And the difference between, you know, having a good record and

Speaker:

making the tournament and not, is that Sunday game, can you guys

Speaker:

come out and be ready to play?

Speaker:

We're not that far away from, from playing.

Speaker:

Well, we just gotta play better, you know, and I mean it's, it's, it sounds easy,

Speaker:

but it sometimes it's a big step and.

Speaker:

We gotta certainly pitch better.

Speaker:

We were terrible on the mound on Saturday.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

And I, I told all of them Gatti was bad and you know, he's gotta

Speaker:

get his himself figured out.

Speaker:

And we'll talk a little bit about that in a minute.

Speaker:

But, um, and however I will say this, sometimes, you

Speaker:

know, silver linings, right?

Speaker:

I thought a couple freshmen came in and threw the ball.

Speaker:

Well, and Chris Cavalcante, that's his second outing in a row, throwing

Speaker:

the ball well for, uh, Maddox Jack second outing in a well in a row.

Speaker:

He throwing the ball pretty well.

Speaker:

He gave up a home run on hanging, breaking ball.

Speaker:

But, you know, the boss come out of both those guys hands, 9 2 9 4 on the fastball.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Um, and it, it shows some potential to, to be pretty good.

Speaker:

Um, so we, you know, we gotta come back out and battle and fight like

Speaker:

crazy to win one game on Sunday.

Speaker:

And, um, the guy, you know, it's an early game.

Speaker:

I mean, we're out there at 9:00 AM.

Speaker:

And you lost an hour.

Speaker:

So it's really 8:00 AM for batting practice.

Speaker:

And we had some really good energy and the work was good, uh, in our pre-game work.

Speaker:

And, um, the guys came out ready to play, man, I I this point, you know,

Speaker:

we, we get, we hit t hits the home run the first, and we give up a home run.

Speaker:

And, um, however, there again, there wasn't any panic.

Speaker:

The guys were into it.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

I thought Sheehy settled down and, and threw a couple zeros up there after that.

Speaker:

He was good.

Speaker:

You know, Hubble worked out of a jam in his one inning and then

Speaker:

Ben Ton came in and just nine, nine straight hitters, you know?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And that gave us a chance to expand that lead.

Speaker:

Uh, Mav hits the big three run Homer, um, and TJ drives in a room of two outs

Speaker:

that that's what we didn't have going on in the first two games series and late

Speaker:

hits a homer to, to get us up six three.

Speaker:

Um, and, and you know, they don't score in that eighth if we turn that double play.

Speaker:

I mean, that's just that simple.

Speaker:

And I said that's the difference between winning and losing.

Speaker:

Like yeah, I was hit hard, but it was right at you.

Speaker:

Cash has gotta catch that and throw across.

Speaker:

It's Taylor made double play ball and those are the things we haven't gotten

Speaker:

in a groove on yet, is those plays and you just have to be ready for 'em, man.

Speaker:

So we give up a couple, make it six five.

Speaker:

Um, they had kellen's grips, you know, he's gotta change something

Speaker:

in his delivery so he is not giving his pitches away and we knew that.

Speaker:

Um, but it's a great story on this.

Speaker:

So, so we, we, in between innings, we switch it up, so,

Speaker:

you know, they were calling out verbals for his, his curve ball.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Um, he gets the first two guys out in the ninth and then the guy, we just

Speaker:

couldn't get out that big giant first baseman just kept wherever we play,

Speaker:

he hit it somewhere else and uh, he gets on and they pinch run for him.

Speaker:

Well, they had been getting kellen's grips coming into his glove.

Speaker:

We called a pick and Kellen, and this is just a, a senior man, this is a

Speaker:

fifth year senior having some feel.

Speaker:

He said he purposely came into his glove.

Speaker:

You know, normally you get the pick sign, you come into

Speaker:

your glove with fastball grip.

Speaker:

He purposely came into his glove with the curve ball grip and then switched it.

Speaker:

And we heard him call the, the verbal.

Speaker:

And so the guy was gonna steal on curveball and he hopped and

Speaker:

we threw a glove, glove drop pick and pick him off and game over.

Speaker:

So he way a, you know, that's kind of a, you know, behind the

Speaker:

scenes thing that people don't see because everybody's going, what

Speaker:

in the world is that guy doing?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

You know, he picked off by mile, but they had given him the verbal to, to go.

Speaker:

Um, and so, you know, good ending.

Speaker:

I mean, we deserved to win that game.

Speaker:

We played better than they did.

Speaker:

I think we out Hitt 'em, you know, I don't know, 11 or 12 to seven or

Speaker:

something like that, and they got three of those hits in the eighth inning after

Speaker:

the double play that wasn't turned.

Speaker:

So, but I, I thought our guys played well.

Speaker:

That's way you gotta play on Sunday to have, have a good shot of winning.

Speaker:

And we certainly pitched much better.

Speaker:

We, we pitched well on Friday and Sunday.

Speaker:

We, we didn't pitch well Saturday.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

You, you talk about the, the pitching performance.

Speaker:

You know, Friday you get 10 strikeouts to five walks, but I thought that was a

Speaker:

pretty big deal by your pitching staff to keep you in that four, two game on Friday

Speaker:

and then Saturday a little bit different.

Speaker:

It was eight and eight and there were some hit by pitches there too.

Speaker:

And what, what I felt like really just slowed us down and killed any momentum

Speaker:

on that Saturday game was the first, the, the lead off hitter and the first

Speaker:

seven innings reached base safely.

Speaker:

Yep.

Speaker:

And I think five of those were walks and hit by a pitch.

Speaker:

Didn't see that on Sunday, and you got back to the dugout quicker.

Speaker:

Other guys just kind of gassed standing in the, in the field that long.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I mean, you know, caddy through, you know, three minutes, walked, four

Speaker:

guys, like, yeah, it can't happen.

Speaker:

I mean, you just can't, you can't overcome, and we gave him a bunch

Speaker:

of them, um, certainly on Saturday, but, you know, the, the ability to

Speaker:

be resilient and, you know, we talked about Sunday, like resiliency means,

Speaker:

just means you just keep picking your butt up out of the dirt no matter

Speaker:

how many times you get knocked down.

Speaker:

And you've gotta be able to do that.

Speaker:

And the teams that develop that ability, um, you know, usually end

Speaker:

up having a, a pretty decent season.

Speaker:

And this group has shown that from an energy standpoint.

Speaker:

And, and look, we know we gotta create our own energy.

Speaker:

It's not a intimidating place to play right now with the fans being

Speaker:

so far away we're, we get it.

Speaker:

Um, we appreciate everybody that comes out and watches us.

Speaker:

But I mean, you know, if you're a visiting team, you are like,

Speaker:

sweet man, this is great.

Speaker:

And so it is what it is, right?

Speaker:

Unless you're the left fielder, then you're kind

Speaker:

like, ah, crap.

Speaker:

Left fielder gets, gets it right now.

Speaker:

But, um, I heard some, I heard some people yapping, uh, yapping him up the other day.

Speaker:

Bo was getting into somebody yesterday.

Speaker:

Yeah,

Speaker:

I could hear him.

Speaker:

'cause I had moved down to the hitting facility on the wall and I

Speaker:

could hear him out there and left.

Speaker:

I don't know if it was a left field or the center fielder, but somebody was

Speaker:

getting the business from Bo out there.

Speaker:

Good.

Speaker:

I love it.

Speaker:

Um, yeah, but I, I really, you know what, uh, I'll tell you this, it was

Speaker:

an, you know, we lost two out of three.

Speaker:

I get it.

Speaker:

But it was an enjoyable series to play.

Speaker:

I'd never played Ucon before.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

In 36 years of coaching period.

Speaker:

Never played 'em once, which is amazing to think.

Speaker:

I was surprised.

Speaker:

OODU had played them at all that we had.

Speaker:

Like one game we'd played.

Speaker:

Well, yeah, Jim said they played here when Guz was here.

Speaker:

Uh, one game, but it was a midweek.

Speaker:

They were so coming up through or something like that.

Speaker:

And, and they won here.

Speaker:

But I'd never coached against Jim Penners.

Speaker:

What a, what a great guy.

Speaker:

Whole coaching staff were fantastic.

Speaker:

I thought their kids played hard.

Speaker:

They didn't run their mouths.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Like very classy series.

Speaker:

No, no issues.

Speaker:

You know, with any of the BS that goes on, you know, in some places.

Speaker:

Um, so I hope, I hope we can keep playing them in the future.

Speaker:

I think we're working on 28, uh, schedule and you know, they're always gonna be one

Speaker:

of the top teams in the northeast, so.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And they were playing without their best hitter, um, kid last name a minute.

Speaker:

Who had had some nerve stuff.

Speaker:

Uh, I play center field for him normally.

Speaker:

So I think you had that guy, that lineup.

Speaker:

It's a pretty potent lineup.

Speaker:

And I'll tell you what, man, I gotta tip my hat to that big first baseman.

Speaker:

I never, he swung and missed one time, the entire weekend once, and he hits

Speaker:

the ball all over the place really hard and we kept trying to get in on

Speaker:

him and he would get pieces of it.

Speaker:

I think Tanton finally jammed him and popped him up, but mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Even that was like a, like a 300 foot popup, infield, you know?

Speaker:

He was, he was not happy the couple times that got him out too.

Speaker:

No, he was not pleased.

Speaker:

And, and it's interesting, that guy was nobody.

Speaker:

And the, I asked the head, uh, Jim, about Jim Pender's, their head coach,

Speaker:

and he, he said, man, everybody passed on that kid outta high school.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

He's missing two bones, he's missing a bone in each of his feet.

Speaker:

And he was just very kinda unor, but he was a good basketball player.

Speaker:

Um, and so he ended up going to what New Hampshire?

Speaker:

He were New Hampshire or something like that outta high school and played his

Speaker:

freshman year and tore it up because I think it was a D two All American

Speaker:

and then wanted to transfer him.

Speaker:

So they took him that time and that was a pretty good move on that part.

Speaker:

'cause that big carry a mesh.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

He is scary.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

For a guy to be that big 6, 6 8, 2 70 and be able to make bat to ball

Speaker:

contact like he does, it's an elite level and eye coordination man.

Speaker:

And I, I think he, you know, and he wasn't terrible at first.

Speaker:

Now he can't run a lick, but he, he was fine around the bag.

Speaker:

Um,

Speaker:

yeah.

Speaker:

And what a presence in the middle of your lineup.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

You know, I was really impressed with him.

Speaker:

Um,

Speaker:

Jackson Marshall is his name 6 8 2

Speaker:

75.

Speaker:

Yeah, he's, he's

Speaker:

a big, the list of, the list of like 6, 7, 6 8 hitters, like just all

Speaker:

time Major League is like five guys.

Speaker:

It's like Aaron Judge and Frank Howard.

Speaker:

And Richie Sexton.

Speaker:

I mean, it is like, it, it's not easy to do at that height.

Speaker:

No, it's not.

Speaker:

You know, we had the Tyson kid here a few years ago.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

He was six seven and he was long though.

Speaker:

He had some swinging and miss in there.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Um, yeah, like you said, he is not in a class by himself, but it

Speaker:

doesn't take too long to call a roll.

Speaker:

You could, yeah, you could, you could make a list pretty easily.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I was very impressed.

Speaker:

And he hit everything and he was swinging.

Speaker:

Like, he wasn't in there to take any pictures, but he was

Speaker:

swinging and he could hit 'em all.

Speaker:

So I think that guy, man, that's, uh, for him to just be a sophomore, like they

Speaker:

got potential to have something there.

Speaker:

Um, as he keeps growing as a, as a hitter.

Speaker:

If his hands get any faster, he's gonna be a big problem.

Speaker:

Because that, that's the thing with like the six, seven guys you're talking

Speaker:

about with Tyson being a long swing, the hands don't get through the zone

Speaker:

fast enough and you can throw a lot of braking stuff to get 'em, Hey,

Speaker:

you can throw him whatever you want.

Speaker:

He saw the shift and just looked at as a challenge.

Speaker:

He's not hitting it out.

Speaker:

He is gonna beat the shift one way or another.

Speaker:

I, he's kill, killing it,

Speaker:

I think.

Speaker:

Um, I don't remember who it was maybe, uh, late told me, you know, the one he

Speaker:

hit up the middle that Mav was playing right there and he was just cussing the

Speaker:

whole time down the first, and then he just decided to hit it through the shift.

Speaker:

Like,

Speaker:

yeah,

Speaker:

a couple of those.

Speaker:

I said, all right, that's, you know, hard hit.

Speaker:

It's gonna be right at our shortstop.

Speaker:

But he was, you know, we had moved him over and then he just was

Speaker:

hitting him where we were, man.

Speaker:

So, um, you know, the old school stuff says like, long lever guys, you try to

Speaker:

crowd 'em, you know, you want to throw hard in and try to get inside the barrel.

Speaker:

Um, and we were able to do that a couple times.

Speaker:

Not, not enough.

Speaker:

And that guy, I mean, he was not off time, don't break a balls at all.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Like he, no, he sees it.

Speaker:

You can tell hitters when they see it, that balance.

Speaker:

Um, those are the guys that go, oh boy, don't put that again.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

We, you're talking about the shifting, I noticed this at the VCU game and

Speaker:

maybe they just play extreme shifts as part of their defense, but they

Speaker:

had every infielder on the right side of second base against TJ Aiken.

Speaker:

And I was a little surprised because I don't think of TJ

Speaker:

as a dead pull hitter at all.

Speaker:

Well, I don't either.

Speaker:

And I, but I think what happens, especially early in the years, guys

Speaker:

are going off sprays from their career.

Speaker:

Um mm-hmm.

Speaker:

And so TJ does show up as a lot of pull ground balls.

Speaker:

He's a much better approach this year.

Speaker:

Like he gets inside the ball.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

He hits it the other way.

Speaker:

Um, he's not just a pull on the ground guy, like he.

Speaker:

Be.

Speaker:

And so I think that's, you know, we'll see.

Speaker:

I hope people keep playing 'em that way because Yeah.

Speaker:

Getting some, some free hits by doing that.

Speaker:

Um, and we talk about like if you, you gotta, you know,

Speaker:

you can't just be a robot.

Speaker:

If you climb up there and you see all those guys over there,

Speaker:

hit

Speaker:

them all the other way.

Speaker:

Uh,

Speaker:

more bunt if you're tj.

Speaker:

Oh

Speaker:

yeah, yeah.

Speaker:

And you know, he hit a home run and got a bunt down yesterday.

Speaker:

That was good.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Drove drove a ball up the middle, two outs for another RBI TJ's

Speaker:

off to a great start for us.

Speaker:

We really

Speaker:

So awesome to see

Speaker:

how he's doing.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Because he had a tough year last year.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Um, that sophomore slump can be real man.

Speaker:

Um, you know, we got a couple other young guys that are, are starting

Speaker:

to trend in the right direction.

Speaker:

I thought Nick felt and hit the ball really hard.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Uh, at VCU lined out a couple times, took a two strike pitch and hit

Speaker:

it in the six hole, beat it out.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Like he's starting to, to show some signs of being the guy

Speaker:

that we think he's gonna be.

Speaker:

And then another guy that look, man, this is where fall baseball can trick you.

Speaker:

Um, was really not very good in the fall at all.

Speaker:

And going into the spring, like there were some days he didn't even take

Speaker:

batting practice on game days 'cause he wasn't in the top 15 or 16 guys.

Speaker:

And, but then his work.

Speaker:

Was better.

Speaker:

And we'd noticed and he was starting to make some improvements.

Speaker:

And then he, he's gotten in there a little bit late lately

Speaker:

and had some really good at bat.

Speaker:

Ben at Siegel?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

He came in there yesterday, uh, in the DH spot and, and got his first college hit.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Uh, and then he whacked the ball to center field that just

Speaker:

missed, you know, uh, won there.

Speaker:

But he, he's coming along.

Speaker:

He is a strong kid.

Speaker:

He is a left-handed hitter.

Speaker:

He is a tough kid.

Speaker:

And, and he is a good example of, we talked to the guys

Speaker:

about working while you wait.

Speaker:

Uh, yeah.

Speaker:

Shows up having a good attitude.

Speaker:

Be a coachable, doing your work every day.

Speaker:

I was like, you guys, we see it.

Speaker:

We see how you carry yourself.

Speaker:

We see the, the look on your face.

Speaker:

You know, uh, I call it the sour lemon face.

Speaker:

Are you over there going like that when you complain?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Uh uh Or are you just into it going, okay, man, what do I need to do?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Uh, Bennett's one of those guys that hasn't ever complained once.

Speaker:

He just shows up.

Speaker:

He does his work.

Speaker:

And he has been a good hitter.

Speaker:

So I believe he's got an innate belief in himself that he could hit.

Speaker:

He just had some poor hitting instruction growing up guys.

Speaker:

It was that whole swing up thing, and he was the top of the cage every

Speaker:

other swing in batting practice.

Speaker:

And so we've, our h and and, and Pauly have done a good job

Speaker:

with, with flattening him out.

Speaker:

Now he's able to get the barrel out in front and he's whacking balls, man.

Speaker:

So I, I think he's got a, a chance to be a pretty good hitter here in the future.

Speaker:

And, and Nick Felton as well.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Really.

Speaker:

It's great to see the top half of your lineup is hitting the ball pretty well.

Speaker:

I feel like, I mean, will tj, I mean, Zach's hitting 4 42 Maverick's up

Speaker:

to 4 23, uh, and Al is hitting 3 95.

Speaker:

I mean, your top six spots in the lineup are producing for you right now.

Speaker:

And it's kind of the plug and play other positions that I think

Speaker:

are still trying to work through.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And, and, and Cash finally had a good.

Speaker:

Good day Friday.

Speaker:

He should have had a home run.

Speaker:

I mean, that went blowing in 25 miles an hour.

Speaker:

Got him.

Speaker:

And he had three hits besides that.

Speaker:

And he hit a ball hard.

Speaker:

He just, you know, he, he, he got off to a bad start.

Speaker:

He had a, he whacked one at the shortstop yesterday, a

Speaker:

hundred plus miles an hour guy.

Speaker:

Made a good play, knocked it down through a mouth.

Speaker:

Um, he's, he's showing some signs of coming around.

Speaker:

Uh, the Dallas is off to a good, compared to a year ago.

Speaker:

He's night of day.

Speaker:

Better hitter in every way.

Speaker:

And

Speaker:

I think he has more hits than he had last season.

Speaker:

Yeah, exactly.

Speaker:

And he, and he is striking out less.

Speaker:

He's still gonna strike out.

Speaker:

So Yeah.

Speaker:

But much less, he's much more of a threat.

Speaker:

Um, his pitch selection has been better and I think he's, you

Speaker:

know, getting, getting more and more comfortable in the outfield.

Speaker:

We played him in left this weekend, uh, and he looked, he

Speaker:

looked, he looked fine out there.

Speaker:

So

Speaker:

yeah.

Speaker:

I like him in left field.

Speaker:

If we, I do too.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I, it's funny about corner outfield positions that some guys like Grayson

Speaker:

Spar is much better than right.

Speaker:

Than in line.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

And that's the guy we didn't talk about.

Speaker:

I saw, I thought Spar had some good at bats this weekend.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Oh yeah.

Speaker:

He had a hit in every game.

Speaker:

He had a double yesterday.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Hit a double at VCU, so he had some productive at bats for us, and he'll

Speaker:

definitely be a guy, I think, uh, against lefties that, you know, was

Speaker:

gonna be in the lineup because, uh,

Speaker:

what's an interesting weekend for you with the three lefty starters?

Speaker:

You got to see some right-handed hitters that maybe hadn't had

Speaker:

some of those opportunities.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And with f with Morales being out, you know that, that, that

Speaker:

takes a, a DH option a little bit.

Speaker:

You know, he'd be the guy that would definitely d against lefties.

Speaker:

And so we're still waiting to hear about his hand and how he is.

Speaker:

Um, so, and, and, and on that note, I think we're going to hear sometime

Speaker:

in the next week, um, about Luke and if we're gonna be able to get

Speaker:

him back or not with his appeal.

Speaker:

Our people feel like that's imminent one way or another, and it'll be good

Speaker:

for everybody to know, obviously.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Just to know.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Obviously you put a, you add a hitter like that to your lineup, it, it's,

Speaker:

you know, can make everybody better.

Speaker:

Um, you know, and, and you, your most experienced, most productive hitter you've

Speaker:

had, you put him back in a lineup and now you've got a much longer lineup, right?

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Because he's gonna bump somebody down.

Speaker:

And you also got a guy that's been a run producer that you can stick back in there

Speaker:

and, and you know, it's like one of those things, like maybe, maybe it's a guy you

Speaker:

can hit behind late to protect him, uh, or in front of him, things like that.

Speaker:

So we'll see.

Speaker:

We'll just keep our fingers crossed and see if we can get him first.

Speaker:

Um, you know, uh, it'll be a big shot in the armed force.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I don't know anything about Luke's long-term plans or anything like that,

Speaker:

but I was wondering as the season went on, do we reach a point where the

Speaker:

NCAA says, yes, you can have an extra year and because we're like 50% of the

Speaker:

way into the season, does Luke think about rolling that year to next year?

Speaker:

I don't think they would do that.

Speaker:

I think they're gonna make a decision here in the next week and

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

It's gonna

Speaker:

be You got it or you don't.

Speaker:

Um, yeah.

Speaker:

So, you know, be unfortunate if they, I mean, it, it, we wouldn't complain

Speaker:

'cause we'd have 'em, but it'd be unfortunate that it takes so long.

Speaker:

Lost a month of the season.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Um, but be better the, you know, better to last.

Speaker:

You know, 40 something games and none.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

So

Speaker:

get the conference play at least would be nice.

Speaker:

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker:

For sure.

Speaker:

A little, little mid-season acquisition for you.

Speaker:

That's all.

Speaker:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker:

That's right.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Call

Speaker:

called him up, right?

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

Well, on on the, the, on the topic of injuries, I did get an update today.

Speaker:

Uh, Marcus Van Alstine had successful UCL surgery.

Speaker:

Should be back with the team here in a week or so.

Speaker:

That's from his dad.

Speaker:

Let let us know.

Speaker:

Thank you to his dad for listening.

Speaker:

And also just a good news update on Marcus.

Speaker:

Yeah, that's, uh, I know that, I'm sure that's a big loss.

Speaker:

That's why it's been nice seeing, um, you know, guy like a Ben Tanton

Speaker:

stepping up and some of these other guys really showing up in

Speaker:

the bullpen when you needed it.

Speaker:

Well, it's a huge loss.

Speaker:

He was our best reliever and most experienced reliever.

Speaker:

Uh, he was really throwing the ball well, and, you know, between him

Speaker:

and bas, we had two guys that we thought were really gonna mm-hmm.

Speaker:

You know, solidify that bullpen down there, but we don't have 'em.

Speaker:

And so it's opportunities for other guys to step up.

Speaker:

You know, I, I, the guys like Jayce Park, man, Ja off.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Oh yeah.

Speaker:

Jayce.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Um, Patrick Johnson, you know, if we could get Ben Tanton's coming on,

Speaker:

if we can get some more out of, uh, Chris Cavalcante and Maddox Jack.

Speaker:

I think those two guys in particular, um, are certainly capable of, you know,

Speaker:

doing it and, and you know, the way, the way that things are shaken out.

Speaker:

Um, I think it's gonna be a, a pitching staff that probably, and

Speaker:

we've had to do this similarly before.

Speaker:

I think we're probably gonna be more in groups or pods of

Speaker:

guys that kind of float around.

Speaker:

Um, other than Kuskie, like Kuskie iss probably gonna be your, uh,

Speaker:

everyday Friday or Saturday guy.

Speaker:

It could be Saturday.

Speaker:

Uh, that makes it the easiest to do this other thing around them.

Speaker:

And then, you know, the groups of guys that.

Speaker:

Throw on Tuesday, we'll come back and throw on Sunday, a group

Speaker:

of guys that throw on Friday.

Speaker:

We'll come back and throw the following Tuesday like that,

Speaker:

two, three inch, 50 pitches.

Speaker:

And so you're getting more outings out of guys each week,

Speaker:

just not as long potentially.

Speaker:

Um, and there's been years where that's been really effective.

Speaker:

Um, and you can make it through a whole year with, you know, eight to 10 guys

Speaker:

that are throwing the ball well and keep 'em all healthy and, and out there.

Speaker:

And sometimes, you know, you tell, you tell a guy, Hey man,

Speaker:

we need six outs out of you.

Speaker:

They go out there and, and burn it up a little bit for you.

Speaker:

And, you know, that's the thing.

Speaker:

Um, you know, it may make 'em a little more consistent, um, rather

Speaker:

than just going once a week.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Yeah, I know Okonkwo was down this week.

Speaker:

I think you said last week it was some shoulder soreness.

Speaker:

How is he doing?

Speaker:

Is he on track?

Speaker:

Uh, potentially

Speaker:

from

Speaker:

East Carolina.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

He's doing better.

Speaker:

He won't throw tomorrow, but he'll, he'll be back on the board for this weekend.

Speaker:

Um, yeah, he, he was just a little bit underwater, I think,

Speaker:

you know, sometimes it happens.

Speaker:

I mean, these freshmen have to be ready, you know, so much

Speaker:

earlier than they're ever used to.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Um, some cases, you know, six weeks, six to eight weeks

Speaker:

earlier, which is significant.

Speaker:

Uh, and so I think that can happen sometimes with those guys.

Speaker:

And we, we were on top of it.

Speaker:

Mike's, Mike's usually on top of those things really well, and

Speaker:

so, you know, that kid's got a chance to have a bright future.

Speaker:

So we just, you know, shut 'em down for a couple weeks and then we'll, we'll

Speaker:

burn 'em back, work 'em back up and, and see how we can get 'em in there.

Speaker:

Gotcha.

Speaker:

At, at some points this weekend against Yukon, I felt like we were playing a

Speaker:

previous year version of ODU where they have these really strong left-handed

Speaker:

starters, couple boppers in the lineup that can hit it, and everyone

Speaker:

was just super scrappy at the plate.

Speaker:

And I looked at 'em like, I don't know if that's the 21 team, the 22 team, what that

Speaker:

was, but it, it felt like I was looking in the mirror a little bit, uh, throughout

Speaker:

some of this weekend and be like, that's, that, that's a team I've seen before.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I, and their Friday guy was fantastic.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I really liked him and, and I thought we did a decent job against them.

Speaker:

Uh, their next two starters, we hit their coach was like, y'all

Speaker:

hit those other two guys harder than they've been hit all year.

Speaker:

Um, so, but having left-handed good start pitching college

Speaker:

baseball is always a plus.

Speaker:

Uh, without a doubt.

Speaker:

So, and, and look, I thought the Friday and Saturday, the two relievers

Speaker:

they brought in were fantastic.

Speaker:

Um, the relievers yesterday weren't as good, but those first two guys like that.

Speaker:

That's a pretty good one, two combination for each of those games.

Speaker:

You know, you may roll through a bunch of games and only throw four guys and

Speaker:

have everybody else left for Sunday.

Speaker:

So they're, their pitching coaches always done a great job.

Speaker:

And, you know, those, those guys, I, I, I thought the pitch

Speaker:

with the fastball really well.

Speaker:

Um, I thought we, you know, again, it was a good, it was good for us 'cause

Speaker:

we hadn't seen a lot of lefthanded pitching going in this weekend.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

And we needed to, and, and we saw three good ones and I thought, I

Speaker:

thought our guys had a good plan.

Speaker:

I thought this stuck with it.

Speaker:

We just couldn't get those big hits on, on Friday and Saturday.

Speaker:

And we finally got a couple of 'em.

Speaker:

Yes for that.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

So big week coming up.

Speaker:

Um, you got, first, got a road trip down to ECU, which is

Speaker:

always a tough place to play.

Speaker:

Always a good team.

Speaker:

And then starting conference play, uh, you know, starting off easy, going

Speaker:

down to Detroit to play the Trojans.

Speaker:

Yeah, east, east Carolina's always a, you know, a fun game.

Speaker:

It's a tough to win at, as you mentioned, but having said that,

Speaker:

we've won down there a fair amount.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

So, um, usually good games and we feel like, uh, we've got enough

Speaker:

arms on the board to, to give us a chance to win that game.

Speaker:

And it's a good hitter's, parks to be a warm day.

Speaker:

So, um, we'll see.

Speaker:

Um, and then heading out to Troy, Troy's record is probably

Speaker:

a little misleading right now.

Speaker:

They played a really tough schedule early.

Speaker:

They, they do have some guys banged up, um, that we've been hearing about.

Speaker:

So we'll see what, what their lineup looks like.

Speaker:

But, um.

Speaker:

Our first time down there in Sunbelt play.

Speaker:

I've been down there before just when I was at Western Kentucky a bunch.

Speaker:

It's a, it's a good park to hit in, uh, especially for left-handed hitters.

Speaker:

They got that green monster and or the black monster, whatever color it is.

Speaker:

Uh, that scoreboard's actually, uh, and right field and it's, it's short down

Speaker:

that right field line into the gap.

Speaker:

Uh, there, you gotta get it up.

Speaker:

It's probably 30 feet tall, but, um, it definitely comes into play.

Speaker:

And so that's where hopefully our, you know, some of our left-handed hitters

Speaker:

will be able to take advantage of that.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Zach's gotta start pulling more balls 'cause he is hitting too

Speaker:

many home runs to center field.

Speaker:

That's not gonna get out everywhere in the league center

Speaker:

field.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Don't, don't you ever tell him that Gary right now.

Speaker:

And that's, no, he hitter he is right when he, yeah, he stays

Speaker:

in the middle of field man.

Speaker:

He is really good.

Speaker:

And um, you know, the ball hit Saturday at the guy robbed him

Speaker:

from, uh, I thought was gonna leave.

Speaker:

Um, late, I don't know, the eighth, seventh, or eighth, whatever, but, uh, you

Speaker:

know, he's, he's locked in right now, man.

Speaker:

He is kind of in the middle of all the good things that are happening

Speaker:

for us offensively for sure.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

He's a tough out at that plate.

Speaker:

I mean, hitting 4 42, 4 home runs, 27 Ribbies.

Speaker:

I think he's top seven in rbis, so, I mean, he is, he's, you got

Speaker:

some, some offensive guys having a hell of a year this year.

Speaker:

Well, Mav, you know, the, the cool thing is Mavs off to.

Speaker:

Much better start than he had.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

First two years where he was ever been 100 the first month of the season.

Speaker:

I mean, we, we did the math last year.

Speaker:

It was like April 15th, both years before he started hitting, and

Speaker:

it

Speaker:

was like disgusting.

Speaker:

How not good he was.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

So it's been a nice surprise.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And so I, I, I mean, Mavs a Florida guy.

Speaker:

He likes it when it's morning.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

So, uh, I told him it's gonna be in the eighties this weekend.

Speaker:

So he, uh, you know, but he, he's off to a better start.

Speaker:

I think some of that too is I told him, I said, look, I, you just play good

Speaker:

defense, have good energy, you're not coming out whether you get a hit or not.

Speaker:

And I think sometimes when guys hear that, they relax a little more

Speaker:

and know they're gonna be in there.

Speaker:

And, um, I, as much as he is hitting, you know, um, he's played

Speaker:

fantastic defense the beginning.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

He is made so many good plays and, and.

Speaker:

And I'm really happy about that.

Speaker:

That's a part of his game.

Speaker:

He is worked really hard on, takes a lot of pride in it, and he's

Speaker:

really developed into a really, really good second base game.

Speaker:

I'll give Zach Leite some flowers as well.

Speaker:

Defensively at first base, the improvement is impressive.

Speaker:

And he's made some big plays on weird ground balls the first this year.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah, he's gotten better.

Speaker:

Um, he's worked hard on it.

Speaker:

And, um, you know, just those two guys, I mean, they're playing

Speaker:

like fifth year seniors, you'd expect them to play right now.

Speaker:

So we need him to keep that way.

Speaker:

And, and that's what you want.

Speaker:

And you know, we got Scotty back in the lineup a little bit this

Speaker:

week coming off the knee injury.

Speaker:

Still not quite himself.

Speaker:

I thought he had really good batting practice today.

Speaker:

Looked like he was getting a little bit, you know, uh, sometimes when you,

Speaker:

you hurt that front knee, it changes your, you know, just how you brace

Speaker:

up swinging and things like that.

Speaker:

So.

Speaker:

I think he's starting to feel a little bit better.

Speaker:

And he was one of our better, you know, hitters in the fall and in the preseason.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Hasn't, hasn't quite gotten it going yet, but I, I think he will,

Speaker:

you know, he is gonna bring the energy for it, that's

Speaker:

for sure.

Speaker:

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker:

He's gonna, he,

Speaker:

well I think I know where may have maybe some of Maverick's, uh, Florida

Speaker:

Energy has come in early this year.

Speaker:

Uh, got got some pictures from Angie Holobetz and Craig Brown

Speaker:

from down at Spring training.

Speaker:

Uh, got Sam Armstrong, Dylan Brown and John Holobetz.

Speaker:

They all had, uh, dinner together a few night nights ago.

Speaker:

I don't think Noah and Blake could join, but you got quite a few monarchs

Speaker:

there on the west coast of Florida and some spring training camps, uh,

Speaker:

potentially may see Hobe throw a pro game in spring training here soon.

Speaker:

We'll keep you updated on that.

Speaker:

Uh, but they didn't just bring the players.

Speaker:

Of course, anytime these groups get together, they

Speaker:

got the whole crew with them.

Speaker:

Uh, having a good time down there in, in Florida,

Speaker:

that's super cool, isn't it?

Speaker:

And um, you know, watching anybody that's been watching the World

Speaker:

Baseball Classic, obviously with.

Speaker:

Jared Young playing for Team Canada and Yee with team USA

Speaker:

and Vinny with Team Italy.

Speaker:

Um, that's, that's been neat.

Speaker:

I'm gonna watch that.

Speaker:

USA game tonight, I think at eight.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Um, USA and Mexico.

Speaker:

That's be a good game.

Speaker:

Mexico's beating us three of the last four.

Speaker:

Uh, yeah, they, they Mexico's they got, they got the big boys.

Speaker:

They got uh, was it Rowdy Tellez and um, Alejandra Kirk.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

They got the guys with my body type I like to watch.

Speaker:

And the pregame spread is all taco.

Speaker:

Yes,

Speaker:

yes.

Speaker:

Uh, get in the door price today was $300.

Speaker:

Wow.

Speaker:

Oh my God.

Speaker:

Just

Speaker:

to get in the door.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

How about that?

Speaker:

That's unbelievable.

Speaker:

But that's been cool to watch, you know, and um, I'd love to see Italy be able to

Speaker:

come, you know, finish second in our pool.

Speaker:

Um, and in advance that'd be, that'd be neat.

Speaker:

And they got a chance.

Speaker:

That'd

Speaker:

be great.

Speaker:

They

Speaker:

got a chance.

Speaker:

So

Speaker:

they got the espressos for the home runs.

Speaker:

That's, uh,

Speaker:

that's

Speaker:

a

Speaker:

good, Vinny is a unique character.

Speaker:

That guy really gets it.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

They're, they, he is very unique.

Speaker:

They definitely broke the mold, made the, hey, and then somebody

Speaker:

broke it on purpose after that.

Speaker:

I know you guys have, uh, Jack getting ready to come on.

Speaker:

And I just wanted to say something.

Speaker:

You know, I've known Jack basically since he was born.

Speaker:

Um, his dad, Tommy, his mom Beth, they're just, you know,

Speaker:

lifelong friends of, of mine.

Speaker:

And, um, Jack is, has been a, just a joy to have in our program.

Speaker:

And he is playing really well right now.

Speaker:

In fact, he's gonna catch tomorrow.

Speaker:

Um, but he, he, Jack has a, um, job lined up, um, when he, when he graduates,

Speaker:

he's gonna go into the Secret Service.

Speaker:

Uh, his uncle, but his mom's brother was a career secret service.

Speaker:

Uh, JT Tanney was his name, but So John, talk to Jack A. Little bit about that.

Speaker:

He, he's a perfect candidate for that.

Speaker:

Um, he's had to jump through some hoops and work around some stuff to go through

Speaker:

all the, you know, the things that you have to go through to get a job like that.

Speaker:

And, and, um, so he is got like one more thing.

Speaker:

He is gotta pass a physical and take a test or something like that, but it'd

Speaker:

be a neat thing to, to mention with him.

Speaker:

And, um, you know, I'm just really, really proud of Jack and, and the type

Speaker:

of young man he is and how he represents our program and it's fun to watch

Speaker:

him, you know, getting an opportunity to play a little bit more this year.

Speaker:

Yeah, absolutely.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

We're, we're excited to have him and thankful as always to have you on here.

Speaker:

Um, and also shout out to ODU for all the access we've gotten this year.

Speaker:

I think I found my rally spot right there on the corner.

Speaker:

Oh,

Speaker:

good.

Speaker:

Hitting facility.

Speaker:

I'm gonna stay there 'cause we do all right when I'm standing there.

Speaker:

Well, we got I'll.

Speaker:

Um, you know, nine days till we'll be back.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

You know, back, back at home.

Speaker:

So, uh, what is it, Norfolk State that following Wednesday?

Speaker:

Yeah, next

Speaker:

Wednesday.

Speaker:

Hopefully the, uh, more than likely the weather forecast for the extent is wrong.

Speaker:

Hopefully it'll be better, but, uh, you know what's interesting man?

Speaker:

The field, just with the, with the, the warmer temp, the field's already

Speaker:

starting to green, green up on its own.

Speaker:

Um, and so I think when we get back and, and get that thing going,

Speaker:

it's gonna start pearling for us.

Speaker:

And that's, that's exciting.

Speaker:

The roof's just about done at the field.

Speaker:

I took some cool pictures of that today.

Speaker:

So starting to look pretty neat.

Speaker:

We're excited, you know, to see that continue to grow.

Speaker:

Yeah, it was awesome to have the live music out there on Saturday too.

Speaker:

They were playing under the tent by the concession stand.

Speaker:

There were a good number of people out there.

Speaker:

Uh, it was great weather on Saturday and Sunday for baseball and was

Speaker:

happy to see the fans come out, but.

Speaker:

They, I just continue like Rick French, that whole crew, just an amazing

Speaker:

job making that not look temporary.

Speaker:

Like it looks like it's been there, it's developed, they know what they're doing.

Speaker:

Uh, just great fan experience again.

Speaker:

And we got the, uh, for the fans.

Speaker:

I noticed today when we were hitting they, they've got the, the miles

Speaker:

per hour up on the scoreboard now.

Speaker:

So hey, nice.

Speaker:

We'll have that.

Speaker:

My mom will

Speaker:

be happy

Speaker:

the rest of the time.

Speaker:

And uh, that's the

Speaker:

thank you for the cookies you gave her

Speaker:

the thank you back.

Speaker:

There you

Speaker:

go.

Speaker:

The next thing, I think the parts come in this week to fix the clock.

Speaker:

So we're, we're getting back to operational.

Speaker:

Well

Speaker:

now you just need iPads out there with the track man data so that way

Speaker:

the people that are 375 feet away can actually call balls and strikes from work

Speaker:

there.

Speaker:

There you go.

Speaker:

That's right.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

That's a neat thing.

Speaker:

So.

Speaker:

Well, thank you guys.

Speaker:

I appreciate it.

Speaker:

All

Speaker:

right.

Speaker:

Look forward to talking to y'all again, um, uh, after the week on the road.

Speaker:

Absolutely be safe, man.

Speaker:

Appreciate you man.

Speaker:

Thank you, Finny.

Speaker:

Great to hear from Finny.

Speaker:

We got, I feel like we got a lot of good info about him and planning

Speaker:

and all of that stuff from Finny.

Speaker:

We never get good info from Finny.

Speaker:

Come

Speaker:

on.

Speaker:

No, he's always cloaking.

Speaker:

Dacker.

Speaker:

What are you talking

Speaker:

about?

Speaker:

He's, he's real secretive.

Speaker:

He doesn't talk a lot about everything.

Speaker:

Come on.

Speaker:

That's, that's very true.

Speaker:

That's, uh, that's what we appreciate about Finny, I think more than

Speaker:

anything else's is it's great.

Speaker:

You're gonna get the truth.

Speaker:

He's not gonna sugarcoat it.

Speaker:

If it's good, it's good.

Speaker:

If it's bad, it's bad.

Speaker:

Yeah, that's right.

Speaker:

I love it.

Speaker:

Well, speaking of good, we have our guest this week, Jack, coming on.

Speaker:

Uh, so please welcome to the Hudson Homers podcast, Jack Slater.

Speaker:

How's it going, Jack?

Speaker:

Just going on guys.

Speaker:

What's up, man?

Speaker:

How you doing?

Speaker:

Doing well.

Speaker:

Thank y'all for having me.

Speaker:

Good.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

Appreciate you being here buddy.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

We were commiserating a little bit, uh, before we started recording on,

Speaker:

just like, I got sunburn this weekend.

Speaker:

Jack.

Speaker:

Looks like you avoided it, but you were well prepared.

Speaker:

Yeah, Hannah had some sunscreen in the dugout for me, which is nice.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

Gotta watch out for us.

Speaker:

Uh, guys that burn super easy, but would love to just get your

Speaker:

thoughts on, on playing at VCU and this weekend against Yukon.

Speaker:

Yeah, VCU was cool.

Speaker:

That's, my parents live in Richmond now, so I got to see

Speaker:

my mom, which is always good.

Speaker:

Give her a hug after the game.

Speaker:

Um, and then kind of a crazy game, just a bunch of home runs, which is

Speaker:

unlike the diamond, but being able to get a win there was awesome,

Speaker:

especially in the ninth inning.

Speaker:

And then Yukon didn't go exactly how we wanted it to, but being able

Speaker:

to scratch that game Sunday was, uh, pretty good for, for everybody.

Speaker:

And, you know, kind of a strange weekend where, you know, a lot of lefty pitchers

Speaker:

kind of kept you from really getting a chance out there, but you've, you've

Speaker:

gotten a lot of chances to play this year.

Speaker:

Tell me how that's been different for you than your first couple

Speaker:

years here with the team.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I mean, it's been fun just being able to be out there and play more.

Speaker:

I mean, as long as we we're winning, I don't, I don't really

Speaker:

care what my role is that day.

Speaker:

Yeah, right.

Speaker:

Um.

Speaker:

But yeah, I mean, playing baseball's fun.

Speaker:

That's why I'm still here as an old man.

Speaker:

So,

Speaker:

well that, so that's the question.

Speaker:

'cause you, you're a fifth year guy, you got the, uh, the extra JUCO year.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Um, which, you know, I think, I think Scotty pointed out one time, he is like,

Speaker:

you're the only classic guys who, who have ever had that, maybe we'll ever have that.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

He's like, I mean, the way I like the way Scotty put it, like, don't deserve it.

Speaker:

I'm gonna enjoy it.

Speaker:

Um, so for you, was there ever a point where you were like, you

Speaker:

know what, I've had my four years.

Speaker:

I'm gonna go on.

Speaker:

I mean, we, we said Finny brought it up and I'm sure we'll talk about

Speaker:

it some about the Secret Service.

Speaker:

Was there any any point where you're like, I'm just gonna go on, or was like, no.

Speaker:

You know, why wouldn't I go back and play one more year with my guys and have fun?

Speaker:

Yeah, there was a little bit, um, of a decision last year.

Speaker:

Um, I wasn't sure if I was done or not, but I kind of looked at it like if I,

Speaker:

in five years from now, I'd probably look back and regret not being able

Speaker:

to go enjoy a win with the guys after,

Speaker:

yeah,

Speaker:

after a good win or just like the every day joking around in the cage, man,

Speaker:

that's what it's really all about.

Speaker:

So, um.

Speaker:

Yeah, being able to come back for one more year and like Scotty said, I didn't do

Speaker:

anything to deserve it, but I'm here, so.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah, they're giving it out for free.

Speaker:

Definitely take it.

Speaker:

Hold on to college as long as you can.

Speaker:

It's, it's not any better out here, I promise.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Well obviously you had time at ODU when the bud was the bud and then

Speaker:

you had the ear on the road and now you're kind of back in the bud in a

Speaker:

little bit different configuration.

Speaker:

How's it been for you getting back to being, playing games

Speaker:

actually at home and in Norfolk?

Speaker:

It's awesome.

Speaker:

I mean, just not having to be on the road 24 7 is really nice.

Speaker:

Um, like, don't get me wrong, we got to play at some really awesome places last

Speaker:

year, but being able to sleep in your own bed and cook food and not rely on

Speaker:

the hotel or anything else is awesome.

Speaker:

And then being able to have fans actually root for you is really cool too.

Speaker:

Where was your favorite away game last year with that schedule?

Speaker:

Uh, Auburn for sure.

Speaker:

I used to live there.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Um.

Speaker:

Still have some friends and family over there, so that was really cool for me.

Speaker:

How old were you when you guys were at Auburn?

Speaker:

We moved when I was in kindergarten, so probably about five or six years old.

Speaker:

I was probably there for three years maybe.

Speaker:

Yeah,

Speaker:

four years.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

For folks who don't know, you know, your dad, Tom, uh, his 35 year career as a

Speaker:

coach, uh, college, you know, was the head coach at Auburn, head coach at BMI.

Speaker:

Um, he was, uh, worked with the Yankees for a long time.

Speaker:

Big league coach of the Mets currently with the, the Florida

Speaker:

Gators was even their head coach, uh, for just a little while, for a

Speaker:

few months while they needed him.

Speaker:

Um, what's that been like growing up with your dad, just being

Speaker:

in baseball your entire life?

Speaker:

I mean, it's awesome.

Speaker:

Um, like.

Speaker:

Like, I've gotten to do more cool things and experience more baseball

Speaker:

probably than anybody my age other than actual professional baseball players.

Speaker:

I got, I get to spend summers with him and got to catch bullpens and

Speaker:

basically be a part of the team this summer, which was awesome for me.

Speaker:

And then like growing up, meeting the people I watch on TV was

Speaker:

one of the coolest things ever.

Speaker:

What team are you with this, this past summer with the Phillies?

Speaker:

Uh, the Redding Phillies.

Speaker:

That's who my dad was with.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Um, before he got the job at Florida, so I spent the whole summer with them.

Speaker:

It was awesome.

Speaker:

That's fantastic.

Speaker:

I, I was, that was one thing I wanted to ask of, I'm sure,

Speaker:

like you said many cool things.

Speaker:

Can you think of something like, off the top of your head, like, this is

Speaker:

like, if my dad wasn't who he is, I wouldn't have had this experience

Speaker:

and this experience was amazing.

Speaker:

Like what, what, is there anything that you're like top of list?

Speaker:

Like this was the coolest?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

When he was with the Yankees, uh, Derek Jeter was rehabbing and I got to take

Speaker:

ground balls with him when I was like.

Speaker:

10.

Speaker:

That

Speaker:

was awesome.

Speaker:

There

Speaker:

you go.

Speaker:

When I was that age, I didn't realize how cool that was.

Speaker:

'cause I was like this.

Speaker:

Yeah,

Speaker:

yeah, it does.

Speaker:

But looking back, like that's coolest things ever.

Speaker:

That's, that's okay.

Speaker:

Good.

Speaker:

I, I didn't even know what that, what you were gonna say, but I

Speaker:

was, that's, that was gonna beat anything I could have guessed.

Speaker:

That's pretty phenomenal.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Good one.

Speaker:

Hard, hard to stop getting ground balls with Jeter.

Speaker:

I, that's

Speaker:

no, yeah.

Speaker:

Bucket list there.

Speaker:

I actually have a

Speaker:

picture.

Speaker:

There's also,

Speaker:

well, with him and all my friends like to kind of gimme a hard time with it.

Speaker:

So

Speaker:

the hard time is, I'm the one with Jeter.

Speaker:

What are you guys talking about?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Like, do you have a picture with Jeter or you Oh, okay.

Speaker:

I don't know where hard time over I won.

Speaker:

But I, I do wonder too, like, you know, with your dad playing ball, not playing

Speaker:

coaching all the time, has that been a thing where sometimes he hasn't been able

Speaker:

to see you because, you know, obviously he, his job is happening at the same

Speaker:

time that you're playing your games.

Speaker:

Yeah, for sure.

Speaker:

I mean, that's kind of the only downside about what his job was, is,

Speaker:

or is I should say, is there was like, when he was in the big leagues, he

Speaker:

was from January 15th until whenever the season ended, he was gone.

Speaker:

That was when I was in high school.

Speaker:

And, um, but I gotta give a lot of credit to not only him, 'cause

Speaker:

like even when he wasn't physically there, he was always present.

Speaker:

I would talk to him every day.

Speaker:

Um, we have a great relationship that's not revolved around baseball.

Speaker:

It's just my dad really.

Speaker:

And then my mom is really the rock star of the family.

Speaker:

She raised my sister and I those months alone and like, she's awesome.

Speaker:

I, if you've ever met her, she's the joy of the world.

Speaker:

So

Speaker:

she is, she's a, she's a wonderful, and that's kind of the true in

Speaker:

all ways, the moms are the best.

Speaker:

I mean, that's just kind of true no matter what.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Yeah, well you're in a pretty loaded catcher's room.

Speaker:

Obviously Mac died coming in.

Speaker:

You got Evan Holman who also I think would feel, have a similar

Speaker:

sentiment for his mother as well.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Uh, tell us a little bit about that experience of being in a

Speaker:

really talented catcher's room.

Speaker:

Yeah, it's been really cool.

Speaker:

Um, like having Matt come in, we lived together.

Speaker:

He is awesome.

Speaker:

And getting to see all the success he's having is really cool.

Speaker:

And it's opened up some cool opportunities for me and Evan is, uh, we've both

Speaker:

been able to play other positions.

Speaker:

Um, I think I carry five gloves to the field nowadays,

Speaker:

so it's, uh, it's been fun.

Speaker:

Do you ready?

Speaker:

What are these five gloves?

Speaker:

'cause I all I know, all I can think of is catcher.

Speaker:

Outfield.

Speaker:

What are you, what are you carrying these, what are

Speaker:

these other gloves

Speaker:

doing?

Speaker:

I've

Speaker:

got, I've got two catchers mitts just in case one breaks.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

And then I've got Luke Waters outfield glove.

Speaker:

I've got a first basement and then I've got a glove for second base.

Speaker:

'cause there was an inner squad.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Gots play second

Speaker:

just in care.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Why not?

Speaker:

And sure.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

That's, I mean, I, I used to do that in high school too, even

Speaker:

though I was left-handed to have the, have the small glove for

Speaker:

second base because you never know.

Speaker:

Yep.

Speaker:

You might actually have that chance though.

Speaker:

We'll see.

Speaker:

Hopefully not.

Speaker:

'cause that mean something happened to Mav, so hopefully Yeah, that's fair.

Speaker:

I stay to the other ones.

Speaker:

See, that's a, that's a true teammate right there.

Speaker:

I like that.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

If you were gonna pick one of those position to play instead of catch one

Speaker:

day, what would be your, your favorite?

Speaker:

Okay, so none of those, because I always joke with Marin, I want to pitch, I don't

Speaker:

want to one game and pitch, but, um, first base is pretty similar to catching.

Speaker:

Not like necessarily like the pitches, but like just keeping the

Speaker:

ball in front of you and picking it.

Speaker:

That's probably them.

Speaker:

Most directly, directly related to it.

Speaker:

You've been out there slinging the bullpen and mess with, like Bryce Windham

Speaker:

used to do that like once a week he would go out and take a bullpen just to

Speaker:

try to, not yet.

Speaker:

I'm still trying to talk Marin into it.

Speaker:

So we'll see.

Speaker:

Vinny PAs, Tino, like would like every other day do a bullpen for

Speaker:

like three years convinced at one point they were gonna let him pitch.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

So don't, don't let the dream die, Jack.

Speaker:

It can happen.

Speaker:

Uh, I'll keep bothering him until he lets me do it.

Speaker:

I think Kenny LaVar did that too, or at least he would go in and

Speaker:

throw one pitch at like 94 plus and they'd be like, anytime I'm ready.

Speaker:

So how did you end up at od?

Speaker:

I mean, obviously, you know, you've known Finny your entire life.

Speaker:

I have to imagine that had something to do with it.

Speaker:

Yeah, so that's kind of a funny story.

Speaker:

Out of high school I was getting recruited by my junior college.

Speaker:

I ended up going to, and then here and by H at VMI.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

And then after my two years of junior college.

Speaker:

Um, Paige was now here and he gave me a call and obviously Finny was

Speaker:

here too, and they were like, Hey, wait, we need to catcher to come in.

Speaker:

And I was like, yeah, of course.

Speaker:

So,

Speaker:

so that worked out.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

So the

Speaker:

kind of one big circle really.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

The interest was always there.

Speaker:

It was always gonna be the VMI guys or, or at odu.

Speaker:

That's interesting.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

What do you like best about being here?

Speaker:

'cause I mean, like, so you, you grew up kind of all over, right?

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

I've lived in, I live, I grew up mostly in Tampa, but when early life

Speaker:

I lived in a few different spots.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

So what do you like most about here in Norfolk?

Speaker:

Like the city?

Speaker:

Yeah, sure.

Speaker:

Um, it's, I like how it's gonna sound weird.

Speaker:

It's similar, it is to Tampa.

Speaker:

Like it's a

Speaker:

No, I see

Speaker:

that big, A big city, but not like massive, like New York.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Where you feel crammed.

Speaker:

I like that it's by the water and that it does snow sometimes,

Speaker:

but it usually stays pretty warm.

Speaker:

No.

Speaker:

Absolutely.

Speaker:

I, I haven't been to Sam.

Speaker:

I totally agree with all your points there.

Speaker:

I think, I think you're dead on.

Speaker:

It's all one thing I've always said, I like that.

Speaker:

It's, it's a city and there's stuff happens, but it's not like insane.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I'm with you.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

I can get in and out of downtown in 10 minutes more.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

You still got some bridges with traffic over bodies of water.

Speaker:

Other than that, you're, you're not do.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

So who do you root for for Major League baseball?

Speaker:

Uh, I'm up the Phillies right now.

Speaker:

It's, it kind of changed just based on who my dad was working

Speaker:

with, and that was the last team.

Speaker:

So that's, that's just where I fuck at right now.

Speaker:

It's

Speaker:

like the, the Dave Chappelle, like I've, I've done commercials for Coke

Speaker:

and Pepsi and we say Pepsi paid me less, so they're, they're better.

Speaker:

I grew up a Yankees fan, so that was who I grew up mostly rooting for.

Speaker:

But with all the teams he is been with, it's changed.

Speaker:

So

Speaker:

yeah.

Speaker:

I wasn't sure if you had any Tampa allegiances there.

Speaker:

I'm a Tampa Bay Lightning fan, so I don't know if you've been

Speaker:

in hockey games down there.

Speaker:

They're.

Speaker:

Yeah, those are the most fun sporting events I've ever been to.

Speaker:

That's awesome.

Speaker:

The Lightning Games.

Speaker:

Yeah, they are, they are.

Speaker:

Well you were probably there when they were really good too.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

It was a cool year.

Speaker:

The Rays made the World Series.

Speaker:

The, and then I think the Bucks and the, uh, lightning both won

Speaker:

that year, so it was pretty cool.

Speaker:

Yeah, that's awesome.

Speaker:

Pretty well a lot of uh, obviously Norfolk and Tampa Bay Hockey connections there.

Speaker:

'cause John Cooper was the coach in Norfolk with a lot of the guys.

Speaker:

Ended up going up one more level to the Bolt, so you'll see a

Speaker:

lot of Go Bolt stickers around the 7, 5 7 and that's okay.

Speaker:

Main reason why.

Speaker:

Nice.

Speaker:

Awesome.

Speaker:

Got one.

Speaker:

Jack, you got what?

Speaker:

You got cb.

Speaker:

I don't wanna cut you off again.

Speaker:

I was ask you got one?

Speaker:

I don't wanna cut you off, sir. I cut you off all the time.

Speaker:

I'm sorry.

Speaker:

Well, looking ahead to East Carolina this week and then Troy over the weekend,

Speaker:

uh, anything mindset wise, change for you as you're getting really close

Speaker:

to getting into the Sunbelt play now?

Speaker:

No, not really.

Speaker:

I mean, at the end of the day, all the games are the same.

Speaker:

You're trying to win each one.

Speaker:

So just trying to go play our best baseball and see what happens.

Speaker:

Really.

Speaker:

Do you have, I mean, now that you absolutely know, like this is gonna

Speaker:

be the end of your baseball career

Speaker:

mm-hmm.

Speaker:

I mean, what are your, how do you deal with that?

Speaker:

Like, what are your feelings on that?

Speaker:

Um, I think if you had asked me two years ago, it probably

Speaker:

would've been a lot of like, worry.

Speaker:

But I mean, I've gotten into my faith a lot and then just like knowing that

Speaker:

like, I'm at peace with whatever happens.

Speaker:

Um, like it's awesome.

Speaker:

'cause at the end of the day, baseball is just what I do.

Speaker:

It's not who I am and as much as I wanna win, but it's, it's

Speaker:

more about just enjoying these last moments with my teammates.

Speaker:

That's, that's so important as well as that realization that you're, you and

Speaker:

you're okay with, with or without this.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

That's, that's, I love hearing that man.

Speaker:

Yeah, I mean,

Speaker:

and, and speaking of, I'm sorry.

Speaker:

Yeah, it's just kind of something that I don't, I think Hunter said

Speaker:

it at one of our Bible studies, like, I'm not defined by my success

Speaker:

or failures on or off the field.

Speaker:

It's, uh, just goes back to our faith in Christ.

Speaker:

So it's, it's, it's been really awesome.

Speaker:

That's great.

Speaker:

Um, and speaking of, you know, the next step, as Fannie pointed

Speaker:

out, you know, so you're gonna be working with the Secret Service.

Speaker:

Can you tell us about what made you interested in doing that?

Speaker:

What are you, what are you looking forward to doing with that?

Speaker:

Yeah, so I still have a few hurdles to get through.

Speaker:

I still have to pass a physical test in April, and then there's a interview

Speaker:

and a polygraph and a background check.

Speaker:

So it's not a hundred percent certain yet, but I'm gonna

Speaker:

try to keep moving through it.

Speaker:

Um, the main reasons were now that baseball is coming to an

Speaker:

end, I still wanna work with a team and work for something

Speaker:

that's bigger than myself and, uh.

Speaker:

That's what I'll get to do and they get some really cool training on how to shoot

Speaker:

guns accurately and drive really fast.

Speaker:

So, sounds like fun to me.

Speaker:

I was, I was gonna ask, are you gonna be more on the protective side of Secret

Speaker:

Service or more on the finance side?

Speaker:

It sounds like the protective side.

Speaker:

If you're getting,

Speaker:

if I get a choice, which I don't know if I will, I would just,

Speaker:

I would love to do that, but I mean whatever they really want.

Speaker:

If

Speaker:

show up day one, like I want the driving fast shooting stuff section

Speaker:

where that is point me to that way.

Speaker:

Hundred

Speaker:

percent.

Speaker:

Are you, are you like driving fast guy?

Speaker:

Is that a thing you're into

Speaker:

No, I really don't, but like I would love to know how to do it if I had to.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

That's fair.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

I like, I like that answer.

Speaker:

That's a really good answer.

Speaker:

It's like, no, but train me and, yes.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

That's a good answer for the Secret Service.

Speaker:

We'll be reviewing our podcast this week for your eligibility.

Speaker:

That's great.

Speaker:

Great answer there.

Speaker:

It might be.

Speaker:

Well, I know the financial side is not that bad either 'cause a lot of people

Speaker:

don't realize that they handle all the counterfeiting that happens in the US and

Speaker:

there's pretty massive counterfeit rings.

Speaker:

So you get to do some, some pretty, pretty wild things on that side too.

Speaker:

But either way, I mean, I think it's a awesome career.

Speaker:

Love that you're kind of tying that into continue to be part of a team

Speaker:

and accomplish like a shared mission.

Speaker:

I'm a hundred percent

Speaker:

and that, that's one thing I've always gotten from you, Jack.

Speaker:

It seems like your one of the most important things to you is

Speaker:

being out there with the guys.

Speaker:

Would you, I mean, is that a fair statement to say that that's

Speaker:

probably one of your biggest pluses for you with being with baseball?

Speaker:

A hundred percent.

Speaker:

I mean, I don't know how much fun a sport would be if you

Speaker:

didn't have teammates really.

Speaker:

Like they, they make the, the hard days easier and the days that

Speaker:

are good, like a lot more fun.

Speaker:

So like when you, I think back at baseball and I'm, when I'm done with

Speaker:

it, it's gonna be more about the people I got to spend time with.

Speaker:

Do you have a favorite teammate?

Speaker:

Uh, either currently or your, in your recent years?

Speaker:

Oh, man.

Speaker:

If you have to, like, make everyone else feel bad and pick

Speaker:

one, you can, you can name a few.

Speaker:

You don't have to pick a one favorite.

Speaker:

I hope he doesn't listen to this.

Speaker:

'cause I don't want him to hear this, but it's, it's definitely maverick.

Speaker:

He's, we've been with each other all five years.

Speaker:

Um,

Speaker:

yeah.

Speaker:

We always give each other a hard time, but yeah, that's my guy.

Speaker:

That's your guy.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

So don't listen to that, Maverick.

Speaker:

You're not, you're, you're not special to Jack.

Speaker:

Don't worry about it.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

As we're about to show him on a graphic that says he's the

Speaker:

player of the week, this week

Speaker:

starts

Speaker:

warming up.

Speaker:

There you go.

Speaker:

Yep.

Speaker:

Well, Jack, we appreciate you, man.

Speaker:

Awesome.

Speaker:

Jack.

Speaker:

I thoroughly enjoyed, uh, oh.

Speaker:

Sorry.

Speaker:

We're doing the same thing now.

Speaker:

Jack, we, we appreciate you, man.

Speaker:

I, uh.

Speaker:

Yeah, I, I've thoroughly enjoyed, um, the time you've been

Speaker:

here, man, just from day one.

Speaker:

Like, you're, you're just, you, you're just a really great person and you're

Speaker:

an ODU U guy through and through, you know, it's exactly the kind of person

Speaker:

we want, uh, to come and, and put on the uniform and play baseball here, man.

Speaker:

So, so thanks for spending the time with us and just thanks

Speaker:

for being a Monarch man.

Speaker:

We appreciate it.

Speaker:

I appreciate it.

Speaker:

Thank you guys for always being so welcoming and giving me this opportunity

Speaker:

to coming hang out with y'all.

Speaker:

Appreciate it.

Speaker:

Absolutely appreciate you.

Speaker:

Thanks a

Speaker:

lot, man.

Speaker:

Thanks, Jack.

Speaker:

Yep.

Speaker:

Y'all have a good one too.

Speaker:

Yeah, take care man.

Speaker:

You

Speaker:

too.

Speaker:

See you.

Speaker:

Bye.

Speaker:

Bye.

Speaker:

A good kid.

Speaker:

What a good kid.

Speaker:

Yeah,

Speaker:

that's awesome.

Speaker:

It's gonna make a great secret service agent too.

Speaker:

Yeah, I believe it.

Speaker:

He, well, he is also very good at being quiet, which I think

Speaker:

is a big part of the job.

Speaker:

And a lot of times, I mean, Jack is one of those guys, like, like Jack,

Speaker:

Jack will talk to you no problem.

Speaker:

But like if Jack, if you, you know, if you're in a situation where you're not

Speaker:

supposed to talk, Jack will be very quiet.

Speaker:

So I feel like that's a part of the job's.

Speaker:

Just you, you talking to the wrist and then do that and

Speaker:

then we can, I, you get at it.

Speaker:

Yeah, I think he, I think he'd be well suited for it.

Speaker:

He's already got the pitch comm ear, so I mean,

Speaker:

yeah,

Speaker:

he's all

Speaker:

set.

Speaker:

He looks cool in sunglasses, like Yeah, he's, he's, he, he's pretty well set.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

We'll

Speaker:

be catching

Speaker:

him in like news clips five years from now, just like we're watching the

Speaker:

guys.

Speaker:

That would be wild.

Speaker:

That would be crazy to be watching TV and just like, is that Jack Slater?

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

Elites made it.

Speaker:

That's awesome.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Good for him.

Speaker:

Well, here's an awful segue,

Speaker:

right?

Speaker:

Speaking of awesome.

Speaker:

Hey, speaking of, you did mention that actually what you was, you did kinda

Speaker:

already have the segue, so it's fine.

Speaker:

Uh, but yes, so players of the week, uh, it's about time.

Speaker:

We, we maverick, uh, actually won the award 'cause he is, he's pretty

Speaker:

much been qualified every week.

Speaker:

It just, somebody else happened to have like maybe a hit or

Speaker:

two more RBI or two more.

Speaker:

Uh, but so Maverick eight for 17 this week, a double, a triple two home runs

Speaker:

six rbis, four runs, scored a walk.

Speaker:

Uh, just continuous dominance that, that big home run, that this is a picture

Speaker:

from on Sunday, uh, was, was huge and swinging that game, tore the monarchs.

Speaker:

Uh, the guy has just been, I mean, again, as we pointed out just statistically

Speaker:

every year, the last two years before April 15th, he would not, he couldn't

Speaker:

hit his weight, I mean, by a lot.

Speaker:

Um, and so him coming out and just dominating the ball, the first, uh,

Speaker:

four weekends here of non-conference play has been phenomenal.

Speaker:

Um, and then of course our, our other guys, the other,

Speaker:

other usual suspects, right?

Speaker:

TJ Akins six for 18.

Speaker:

Double triple home run two rbis, five runs a walk.

Speaker:

Zach, late six for 14, a Homer, five rbis.

Speaker:

He's way up there in rbis for the whole country.

Speaker:

Um, Tyler's of Dallas, six for 16, a Homer, three rbis and, and mac

Speaker:

dye was five 14 with three rbis.

Speaker:

Um.

Speaker:

That's been kind of the, the five guys who you pretty much being able to

Speaker:

count on are gonna hit in the lineup.

Speaker:

Oh, my ear is falling out.

Speaker:

Where's my ear going?

Speaker:

I

Speaker:

know.

Speaker:

Get back here, sir. Do your job.

Speaker:

I say, did you sneeze too hard and blow your, uh, air pods?

Speaker:

I've seen that happen now, so

Speaker:

who knows?

Speaker:

Um, yes.

Speaker:

And then, uh, so that the hitting side, anything you wanna say about the hitters?

Speaker:

I'm sorry, while I'm, as I'm rambling on?

Speaker:

Uh, no.

Speaker:

Uh, the home run, the mac dye hit, uh, against VCUI still don't think

Speaker:

has officially come to a stop.

Speaker:

That ball was absolutely tattooed out of that ballpark.

Speaker:

Um, I thought he, he did a pretty good job behind the plate.

Speaker:

Um, but love seeing that.

Speaker:

But Maverick's home run that you captured there in that sequence is potentially

Speaker:

my favorite picture of the year.

Speaker:

And you may not like it because it's not.

Speaker:

Perfect photograph.

Speaker:

Pretty in edited.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

But Chuck celebrating the home run with the rest of the crew there.

Speaker:

Kellen slapping the board.

Speaker:

I mean, that was the energy that they had on Sunday, and you could feel

Speaker:

it throughout the entire game even.

Speaker:

You know, e-com was battling back.

Speaker:

You could feel that energy.

Speaker:

Uh, but Chuck, he, he gets the award for, uh, most clean jumps over the brick wall.

Speaker:

I think he had five in about 90 seconds at one point of the game on Sunday.

Speaker:

Shagging those balls out of foul territory.

Speaker:

Uh, so I don't know that, that picture just makes me really happy.

Speaker:

I feel like that was, he's

Speaker:

he's not a small guy to be, uh, that, that brick either.

Speaker:

No, no.

Speaker:

But let's, let's get that, that the, our Player of the week graphic bag.

Speaker:

We gotta talk about our pitchers now.

Speaker:

Uh, so Ben Tanton, uh, the freshman, look at this, the, I

Speaker:

mean, he had two appearances.

Speaker:

We were even talking about it I think yesterday during the game.

Speaker:

We were like, oh, Ben might be player of the week.

Speaker:

And you're like, yeah, three innings.

Speaker:

I'm like, he also pitched two scoreless on, on Wednesday.

Speaker:

And you're like, oh, that's right.

Speaker:

Yeah, so two games, five innings, no runs, one strikeout, no walks.

Speaker:

Um, I don't think he even gave any hits.

Speaker:

I didn't even write it down.

Speaker:

I think he gave him no hits and all that.

Speaker:

I mean, I think he, he faced what that 15 and got 'em all down like that's,

Speaker:

yeah,

Speaker:

he was disgusting this week.

Speaker:

I mean, that, that's been, that's huge.

Speaker:

And seeing freshmen, I mean, obviously we know he's, he's had,

Speaker:

he had another appearance that wasn't so great a week or two ago.

Speaker:

Um, he'll probably have an appearance in a week or so before where it, it

Speaker:

won't be as great because that's what happens to pitchers and freshmen.

Speaker:

Uh, but for right now, Ben is locked in and it's awesome.

Speaker:

And he has, I keep giving a hard time.

Speaker:

He has like the biggest fan group, uh, of all time.

Speaker:

Anytime I post a picture of Ben, it gets like 50 shares.

Speaker:

Like he, he is, he is well loved.

Speaker:

So it's nice.

Speaker:

Um.

Speaker:

Bailey also had a great week.

Speaker:

I mean, he had the one appearance on Wednesday, uh, picked up a

Speaker:

wind, kind of got his own save.

Speaker:

Um, as you pointed out, he was unhittable in addition to the, the light.

Speaker:

I don't think the light was that, that bad.

Speaker:

Uh, but it wasn't an ideal lighting to hit in for sure.

Speaker:

And we know when Bailey is on, he, he is nasty.

Speaker:

Um, Jay's Park had another phenomenal appearance, two

Speaker:

scoreless innings, three strikeouts.

Speaker:

Um, Darren Kuski, he, I mean, four innings, two runs, six strikeouts.

Speaker:

You know, three walks is a little bit high for him, but he was, he was

Speaker:

pitching the ball where it needed to go and he was getting ground balls

Speaker:

and just weren't getting fielded.

Speaker:

Um, and so he, he really had a bad, a lot of bad luck in that one.

Speaker:

Um, Chris Kante had a scoreless inning.

Speaker:

He looked great.

Speaker:

And then Patrick Johnson, he, I think he gave a coup up a couple of runs

Speaker:

when he first came in to somebody else's, but he ended up with two,

Speaker:

uh, two thirds scoreless on his own.

Speaker:

Um, so, so some pretty good appearances in, in what was

Speaker:

not the best pitching week.

Speaker:

I mean, we had, we gave up 10 runs in a win and what, 14 and a loss.

Speaker:

So Yeah.

Speaker:

Uh, despite that, there were still some really good pitching appearances.

Speaker:

Ben was such a just stabilizing force this week.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

In two games that could have definitely gone either way.

Speaker:

I mean, the VCU game had scored three in the ninth to do it, but he came in and

Speaker:

kind of started stacking those zeros that stacking zeros come to catch catchphrase

Speaker:

for this pitching staff this year.

Speaker:

But cool is a cucumber.

Speaker:

I mean, high leverage, no high leverage.

Speaker:

Doesn't matter.

Speaker:

I mean, he's just, he's gonna fill the strike zone.

Speaker:

Sure.

Speaker:

He's gonna get guys out a lot of soft contact.

Speaker:

Uh, I I mean, just that's really impressive from a freshman.

Speaker:

It's really impressive in general against Yukon's lineup to go one time through the

Speaker:

order and not get tattooed by that monster they had playing First Base A Beast.

Speaker:

I actually just got, got him out.

Speaker:

Like,

Speaker:

yeah.

Speaker:

It's, um, it, it is really impressive.

Speaker:

And that's just another one of these guys, like a Jayce Park or someone that

Speaker:

you know, is younger and is leaning into a heavier role this year and I

Speaker:

Is, is paying some dividends while some other guys are, are getting healthy.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

It, it's what you need.

Speaker:

Um, because like I said, with, with Marcus getting hurt in that first game that.

Speaker:

Then Hunter getting hurt back in the fall.

Speaker:

That readjusts, you know what you're gonna have outta the bullpen.

Speaker:

You know, you really believe that was two big time arms.

Speaker:

Like, okay, well you lost one early.

Speaker:

We still thought, okay, we got Marcus.

Speaker:

He's that utility knife, right?

Speaker:

You can use 'em anywhere.

Speaker:

Um, and then not having them is like, man, guys are gonna have to stay.

Speaker:

If we're gonna have any kind of season worth talking about,

Speaker:

guys are gonna have to step up.

Speaker:

And so you, hopefully you're starting to see it.

Speaker:

Yeah, it's, it's been great to have those guys pull up.

Speaker:

'cause I mean, I, I don't know if we went on Sunday, if Ben doesn't come

Speaker:

in and throw us three scoreless.

Speaker:

'cause we still had Kellen and Bailey that we could go to.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

But we don't have a Conco who's typically pitched on some Sundays to

Speaker:

eat some innings and get some guys out.

Speaker:

Uh, just big and, and kept the energy up of getting those clean innings,

Speaker:

quick innings back to the dugout.

Speaker:

Saturday, I felt like we were on the field 95% of the time that that game was played.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

It was long innings the lead off guy getting on a lot of

Speaker:

two guys getting on safely.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And then we would come up and Yukon at that point was just filling

Speaker:

the zone they wanted to get out there and it was ground ball.

Speaker:

Pop flies strike out back in the field 90 seconds later.

Speaker:

So just having someone that can get the reverse of that and get

Speaker:

us back in the dugout mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Was, was huge this week.

Speaker:

Uh, big impact on getting the, getting the two and two record over the weekend.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And I, I think you, you kind of joked about that, um, after

Speaker:

the, the bad loss on Saturday.

Speaker:

It's like, you know, they might win tomorrow.

Speaker:

The go two and two.

Speaker:

You're like, guess what?

Speaker:

Week wasn't that bad.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

It's, it's, it's funny how that goes.

Speaker:

I mean, I think what you're seeing right now is this team's

Speaker:

biggest issue is consistency.

Speaker:

I think that hitting wise a good amount of the aren't consistent.

Speaker:

Um, but then some of 'em aren't fielding wise, but a lot of

Speaker:

inconsistency just all over the field.

Speaker:

Uh, and then pitching, but a lot of incons inconsistency aside from a couple guys.

Speaker:

Um, and so, you know, you, you're getting the, you're hitting the road now.

Speaker:

You're, you're at four games.

Speaker:

They're gonna be tough this week, all on the road.

Speaker:

Um, you're in conference every weekend now.

Speaker:

So now the wins of the weekend matter.

Speaker:

Um, you know, you want to win every single weekend.

Speaker:

That's, that's your goal, right?

Speaker:

I mean, if you go two and one every weekend, you're gonna

Speaker:

have a good season, right?

Speaker:

You're gonna be, what is that?

Speaker:

That's 20 and 10 in conference.

Speaker:

20 and 10 conferences usually got you second, third, maybe first,

Speaker:

depending on the how you go, right?

Speaker:

Um, so if you win every two, outta three every weekend, you'll be, you'll be fine.

Speaker:

But to do that, you gotta be more consistent.

Speaker:

You gotta step up and you gotta, like, like, like he, like Finny said, you

Speaker:

gotta lock in focus or maybe Bria outta your eyelids if you're too focused.

Speaker:

I think maybe if you guys adapting some gills to their eyelids, uh, yeah.

Speaker:

For the, the rest of the season.

Speaker:

Uh, but it is wild.

Speaker:

I think we are approaching conference play this weekend

Speaker:

going down to Troy for those two.

Speaker:

And we need to get back in the mindset of like, those are definitely

Speaker:

the most critical of games.

Speaker:

Like ECU matters, it's rival.

Speaker:

We wanna beat them, we're gonna try to beat them.

Speaker:

Uh, but again, we are saving our best bullets for the three that are in

Speaker:

Troy and I think it was last year of that, that six seed in or better is

Speaker:

what you really need to have to have any success in the Sunbelt tournament.

Speaker:

We got to that six seed last year.

Speaker:

Still a very, very tough road, but it's game that you have to play through.

Speaker:

And if you wanna be considered really in the top six, you're gonna have to be

Speaker:

above 500, even if it's one game above two games above, three games above.

Speaker:

So if we go and drop the first two to Troy, we need the same support for that

Speaker:

final game, just like the Yukon weekend because we were saved last year because

Speaker:

we sold with some Sunday games For sure.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I mean, I still think you wanna be in the top three in the Sunbelt.

Speaker:

I think if you're top three in the Sunbelt, you're probably

Speaker:

going to the NCAA tournament.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

Um, that's, I mean, that's the reality.

Speaker:

So if you can do that, which again, probably gotta win two

Speaker:

outta three every weekend.

Speaker:

So I, I say until things start twisting in a different direction, you gotta make some

Speaker:

things right now before you head do it.

Speaker:

Like, Hey, look, we are aiming top three, not two, not three.

Speaker:

That's our goal.

Speaker:

But reality is just go out and, and just again, pitch by pitch win, win the moment.

Speaker:

And if you win every moment, you're gonna win the games.

Speaker:

This is how it goes.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Get the bats going a little bit earlier.

Speaker:

I know we faced the best pitching on Fridays and Saturdays, but it, it.

Speaker:

Kind of been a trend Fordy last couple years of little offensive

Speaker:

outage on those Friday games.

Speaker:

It starts kicking in later on in the week.

Speaker:

So getting the bats going early, uh, maybe they're just tired from all the damn home

Speaker:

runs they hit at VCU earlier in the week.

Speaker:

'cause that was, that was a, that was nuts.

Speaker:

A weird

Speaker:

day.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Uh, goodbye to the Diamond.

Speaker:

I guess.

Speaker:

I don't, I doubt I'll be at another VCU game.

Speaker:

And, uh, it, I had a lot of, lot of good times at the Diamond man.

Speaker:

I saw a lot of good baseball there.

Speaker:

I saw, you know, Andre Jones playing when he was 19 and saw lots of, lots of future

Speaker:

big leaguers and lots of, uh, really great baseball and had a lot of great times.

Speaker:

And I, I really liked the diamond.

Speaker:

I, I will, uh, I'll miss it and I feel like the new one, I'm sure I'll

Speaker:

go to it, but won't be the same.

Speaker:

Yes, it was a great date spot back in the day.

Speaker:

That's actually my wife and i's first quote unquote date was when I stole

Speaker:

her from another date that she was on that night at the Diamond, so Oh wow.

Speaker:

Definitely some, some good memories for me in that place.

Speaker:

Uh, aside from working a lot of the squirrels games, not

Speaker:

the only, not just the base runners picking up steals

Speaker:

of the game.

Speaker:

Hey, you gotta steal the signs, and hey, if you, if you, uh, feed the ladies,

Speaker:

uh, that, that apparently worked for me.

Speaker:

So that's my best, uh, dating advice out there for you.

Speaker:

There you go.

Speaker:

Well, that sounds like a great way to end the podcast because we're not,

Speaker:

we're not topping Gary's dating advice.

Speaker:

We have to.

Speaker:

She's married and I'm not, so my dating advice would be terrible.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

My dating advice is usually break up.

Speaker:

I feel like most relationships would be better if you would just break up.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

That'd solve a lot of your issues.

Speaker:

If you just break up,

Speaker:

well, all you got it from both equations.

Speaker:

Go to the diamond before it closes and get a non-existent hot dog

Speaker:

from the not open concession stand.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

Or just breakup one of the two.

Speaker:

Somewhere, somewhere there.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Uh, I had two, two ballpark related notes.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

Uh, Yukon hit a home run ball into the left field stands.

Speaker:

I don't know which team they were on, but another student athlete

Speaker:

for ODU u chucked it on the field.

Speaker:

Congrats for that.

Speaker:

I saw that.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I saw him getting that ball back.

Speaker:

That was great.

Speaker:

Yes, I heard somebody yell, give it to a kid, and I saw her look and then look back

Speaker:

at the field and throw it right on there.

Speaker:

So you did the right thing.

Speaker:

Don't let anyone else tell you

Speaker:

otherwise.

Speaker:

Excellent.

Speaker:

Do not ever, don't give it to a kid.

Speaker:

If you're gonna give it to somebody, give it to a sad adult.

Speaker:

The kid doesn't need it.

Speaker:

A kid has his whole life in front of him.

Speaker:

Find a sad adult and give them the ball.

Speaker:

It's gonna change their day.

Speaker:

Well, TJ Akin hit one to almost that exact same spot in the next inning.

Speaker:

And I was like, all right, you give that one to a kid.

Speaker:

Like that's the

Speaker:

one that goes to the kid.

Speaker:

You get tj.

Speaker:

No.

Speaker:

Don't ever forget to kids get too much.

Speaker:

I know.

Speaker:

I'm, I'm, this is i'll, this is a hill I'll die on Kids don't need a, but

Speaker:

no, I'm, I give the ball to a kid, but don't give it, give it find a sad adult.

Speaker:

He's some, some sad guy.

Speaker:

He looks, he needs a ball.

Speaker:

I don't know.

Speaker:

I'm just saying.

Speaker:

Well, hopefully there aren't too many sad adults coming to

Speaker:

du baseball games, but we can

Speaker:

turn.

Speaker:

I want all those come out.

Speaker:

If you're a sad adult, come to the game and be happy and find this great,

Speaker:

wonderful community and this experience.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

I want the sad adults to come and they won't be sad.

Speaker:

They won't, when we hand them the ball, then they won't be sad anymore.

Speaker:

There you go.

Speaker:

See Gary, you're not, you're not.

Speaker:

You got, you can't only get the happy people.

Speaker:

You gotta bring the That's

Speaker:

true.

Speaker:

That's true.

Speaker:

We gotta bring 'em in and make them happy.

Speaker:

Strange.

Speaker:

Turn to the end.

Speaker:

I

Speaker:

apologize

Speaker:

to our normal viewers.

Speaker:

Well, speaking of that, make sure to follow us on social media.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Hudson Homers, uh, we get a lot of great engagement, but I think we're still under

Speaker:

a hundred followers on that X account.

Speaker:

Uh, it just started.

Speaker:

So that's not like super shocking, but we'll do something fun when we hit 500.

Speaker:

So tell your friends, maybe it's just a dating advice show from the two of us.

Speaker:

I don't, I dunno.

Speaker:

We unfollow us from that, about that.

Speaker:

Um, and then also, uh, if you've made it this long and you're still listening,

Speaker:

uh, if you send a DM to the Hudson Homers, uh, X account or Instagram

Speaker:

account, I've got four, uh, ballpark passes for you to get into the future

Speaker:

Speaker:

I'll give 'em to you, uh, before the next home game.

Speaker:

Speaker:

Slide and them dms.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

So if they've made it this far, they deserve free tickets.

Speaker:

Speaker:

There we go.

Speaker:

There we go.

Speaker:

They deserve something for this.

Speaker:

Some, some kind of compensation.

Speaker:

Absolutely.

Speaker:

Well, thank you all for listening.

Speaker:

We greatly appreciate it.

Speaker:

It's always nice chat with people at the ballpark, getting

Speaker:

feedback, all that fun stuff.

Speaker:

We'll keep working on the pen clicks over here.

Speaker:

I switch to a, uh, hockey puck today.

Speaker:

That only makes noise if I drop it and then you can laugh.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Uh, yes.

Speaker:

Other than that.

Speaker:

Go Monarchs.
