Anique Coffee:

Hi ladies, are you excited to Hello

Nikki de Vet:

Podcast?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Yes.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Very excited.

Anique Coffee:

I'm excited too Welcome to Re-Imagining Work from Within.

Anique Coffee:

I'm smiling ear to ear because I'm joined by two colleagues, two fellow

Anique Coffee:

within partners, Kendall Clifton short in Bozeman, Montana, and Nikki de

Anique Coffee:

Vet in France eating her baguettes.

Anique Coffee:

How are you both say hello?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Hello?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Hi.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

. Hi, . Banjo.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

. Nikki de Vet: Actually, I think.

Anique Coffee:

Hey, Anique how are you?

Anique Coffee:

Great to have you both here.

Anique Coffee:

Good.

Anique Coffee:

Doing really well.

Anique Coffee:

So happy to be kind of closing out our podcasting, our first year of

Anique Coffee:

podcasting with the two of you.

Anique Coffee:

Really excited to have this conversation with you today.

Anique Coffee:

We're gonna be talking about how to bring intention to your

Anique Coffee:

growth in 2023 and beyond.

Anique Coffee:

And really for us, this content is quite evergreen.

Anique Coffee:

It's really about growing with intention, growing in a meaningful way for you

Anique Coffee:

and your people, which could be true in a, a quarter of a year, or the

Anique Coffee:

kickoff of a year or the end of a year.

Anique Coffee:

So we happen to be now.

Anique Coffee:

December, 2022, thinking a lot about our 2023 strategy and supporting our clients

Anique Coffee:

to think about their 2023 growth strategy.

Anique Coffee:

So we've been talking a lot about bringing attention to our

Anique Coffee:

growth, and the idea today is to.

Anique Coffee:

Kind of go through the steps in which we do that, but give the two of you a chance

Anique Coffee:

to really share some of your experience as facilitating and coaching some of

Anique Coffee:

these conversations, and perhaps even bring in some of the client stories of,

Anique Coffee:

of how you've supported the leaders in our community to grow with intention.

Anique Coffee:

Sound good?

Anique Coffee:

Let's do it.

Anique Coffee:

All

Nikki de Vet:

right.

Nikki de Vet:

Yeah.

Nikki de Vet:

Sounds great.

Nikki de Vet:

And congrats on the year of

Kendall Clifton-Short:

podcasting.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Well done us.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

That's exciting.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Yes.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Yeah.

Anique Coffee:

Awesome.

Anique Coffee:

It's been a fun year.

Anique Coffee:

A fun year.

Anique Coffee:

Mm-hmm.

Anique Coffee:

And I feel we've gotten almost all the voices across the partnership on the pod,

Anique Coffee:

which has been a big goal of mine to make sure we hear from all of of our corners of

Anique Coffee:

the world of how we're supporting leaders.

Anique Coffee:

So excited to have the two of you.

Anique Coffee:

Kendall Clifton-Short: It's gonna be great.

Anique Coffee:

Go sneak us in quickly before the end of the year.

Anique Coffee:

. Nikki de Vet: Yeah.

Anique Coffee:

Who didn't, who didn't we hear from yet?

Anique Coffee:

Let's capture those . Yeah.

Anique Coffee:

Well we've got, I mean, Kendall, you've, it's not out yet, but

Anique Coffee:

you've just done a podcast from your event last week in Bozeman.

Anique Coffee:

Right?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Right.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Yeah.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

That's exciting.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

I feel like, oh, I'm going from no podcasting to like podcasting all the

Kendall Clifton-Short:

time, so that's quite exciting for me.

Anique Coffee:

Yeah, and we actually did one at the beginning, Kendall

Anique Coffee:

on February and from Denver.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

After at Denver, then, yeah, that was great.

Anique Coffee:

Yeah.

Anique Coffee:

Good.

Anique Coffee:

All right, so Nicki, this is your first time on the pod though, right?

Nikki de Vet:

Yes.

Nikki de Vet:

Apart from that, I read out one of our, of my blog

Anique Coffee:

post, like right narrated

Nikki de Vet:

good blog post, and we have another recording coming up

Nikki de Vet:

in the next couple of weeks as well.

Nikki de Vet:

Hey, Nick, so it's That's right.

Nikki de Vet:

Central.

Nikki de Vet:

Yeah.

Nikki de Vet:

Yeah.

Anique Coffee:

I love it.

Anique Coffee:

Exciting.

Anique Coffee:

Okay, cool.

Anique Coffee:

Well, let's talk about our topic of today, how to bring intention

Anique Coffee:

to your growth in 2023 and beyond.

Anique Coffee:

And we're really kind of tying this to a recent blog post that we put

Anique Coffee:

out, which kind of went through a four step process of how we do that

Anique Coffee:

with the leaders in our community.

Anique Coffee:

And so I thought, we've got the blog, let's talk about how we

Anique Coffee:

actually do that and bring some storytelling to it from the two of.

Anique Coffee:

So I'll go kind of go through the steps and I've got some questions to

Anique Coffee:

ask you that kind of go along with each step, and I'd love to hear your

Anique Coffee:

stories from your corners of the world.

Anique Coffee:

So step one is all about reflection.

Anique Coffee:

So the looking back and the learning from what you've been

Anique Coffee:

through and what you've done.

Anique Coffee:

So maybe I, we could hear from Kendall first and we'll hear from both of

Anique Coffee:

you and kind of switch back and forth, but what are some of the ways

Anique Coffee:

that you support leaders to reflect.

Anique Coffee:

In that, what might be some of the questions you'd ask them to help

Anique Coffee:

them reflect, to look back and learn?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Well, I think there's also another question of like,

Kendall Clifton-Short:

why would we look back and learn, right?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

That we really need to understand before we can dive in.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

And I think the.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

You know, the, the definition of insanity is continuing to do what we've always been

Kendall Clifton-Short:

doing and expecting a different result.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

So reflection is really the key to inform or shape how you might

Kendall Clifton-Short:

choose to stop doing some things or, or start doing them differently.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

So I think there's a.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

A bunch of creative ways that you can do this.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Really, the world is your oyster in terms of like how, how crazy and how aligned

Kendall Clifton-Short:

with sort of who you are as a company.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Do you wanna be, there's a local company in town here that is all

Kendall Clifton-Short:

about the outdoors and they do such a fabulous job of building outdoor

Kendall Clifton-Short:

narrative into everything they do.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

When people have roles, then they're sort of.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Travelers or their, you know route finders, et cetera.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

And so I think, you know, you, you can find a bunch of beautiful metaphors

Kendall Clifton-Short:

or ways to do your reflection in, in a way that's really meaningful to your.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Organization.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

So for them it might be like, okay, let's go back over the map of where

Kendall Clifton-Short:

we've been over the last year and really pick out some highlights of you know,

Kendall Clifton-Short:

what happened at different points of the journey and what would we, what is there

Kendall Clifton-Short:

for us to, to, to learn and grow from.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

And what, what were the.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Things we wanna celebrate and what, what are the things that like, actually we

Kendall Clifton-Short:

wanna forget, but have rich learning before we forget them . So that we can

Kendall Clifton-Short:

really start to think about, well, what is worth continuing to do and continuing

Kendall Clifton-Short:

to bring with us into the future?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

What is something that we like the essence of?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Perhaps, perhaps we didn't nail it, so we might wanna do it slightly differently,

Kendall Clifton-Short:

and what can we just let, let go of?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Because it's really not.

Anique Coffee:

Great.

Anique Coffee:

I love that idea of bringing in like the personality of your company

Anique Coffee:

of like, if you're that kind of outdoor company, bring in some of

Anique Coffee:

that nuance of, and the metaphor of it, and using that as a reflection.

Anique Coffee:

I really like that.

Anique Coffee:

What about you, Nikki?

Anique Coffee:

What are some ways you support leaders in reflecting and looking back and learning?

Anique Coffee:

Yeah, it's

Nikki de Vet:

such a great question.

Nikki de Vet:

I think similarly to Kendall, I feel what is so important are the conditions in

Nikki de Vet:

which you are doing the reflecting in.

Nikki de Vet:

So what kind of environment do we really need to create for our organization to,

Nikki de Vet:

to be able to have that reflection moment?

Nikki de Vet:

And I think to start with, at the, at the very basic level,

Nikki de Vet:

it's like, let's carve out a time.

Nikki de Vet:

Let's make this something that is important to us and

Nikki de Vet:

therefore we step into doing it.

Nikki de Vet:

Like I.

Nikki de Vet:

Part.

Nikki de Vet:

Part of why maybe many leaders or many organizations don't get around to do

Nikki de Vet:

it, especially at the end of a year or a quarter, is because it's just

Nikki de Vet:

so busy and then you forget, right?

Nikki de Vet:

So how do we intentionally carve out the time to step into reflection?

Nikki de Vet:

and it can be as easy as just have some powerful questions.

Nikki de Vet:

I think as Kendall is speaking to, like for instance, what are you most

Nikki de Vet:

proud of in the last, if you think about the last year, what are you, what

Nikki de Vet:

have you been most proud of or what has been blocking you or what has been

Nikki de Vet:

stopping you from achieving some of the, the goals or the targets or the

Nikki de Vet:

vision that you set out for the year?

Nikki de Vet:

A question that I really like as well is what has this last year felt like?

Nikki de Vet:

Like what did it feel like to you?

Nikki de Vet:

Like was it something that was super joyful or was it a game of two halves

Nikki de Vet:

and the first year, half of the year felt really great and awesome and

Nikki de Vet:

felt super in flow, but the, the second half of the year actually,

Nikki de Vet:

we were completely out of alignment.

Nikki de Vet:

And really get people like, rather than just thinking, have we hit those goals?

Nikki de Vet:

And you know, what are the ways that we take forward?

Nikki de Vet:

Like what has it really felt like to us as an experience of running this

Nikki de Vet:

business, of growing in our organization?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

The other thing I'd add is when we say strategic planning,

Kendall Clifton-Short:

we often think, oh, get, get the leaders around the boardroom and maybe with the

Kendall Clifton-Short:

whiteboard, a poster if you do work with within and you know, they're the people

Kendall Clifton-Short:

who need to have this conversation.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

But really what I'm hearing Nikki saying, and what I see

Kendall Clifton-Short:

too, is there's so much power in.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

, everyone having some version of this conversation and really tapping into

Kendall Clifton-Short:

what's been the experience for them and what would they like to then

Kendall Clifton-Short:

their experience moving forward being.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

And I think you can do, like if you're a small organization that

Kendall Clifton-Short:

feels like totally manageable and I.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

I'm really proud of lots of local businesses in Bozeman who

Kendall Clifton-Short:

have like carved out K two days.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

At the end of the year, we're gonna get together and do this.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

I think you can also do it really creatively when you're a more hybrid

Kendall Clifton-Short:

organization or a remote organization.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

I mean, look at, look at us for example.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

We, we've had sort of replicated the type of conversation we wanted

Kendall Clifton-Short:

to have, but brought our own flavor as three different hubs and then

Kendall Clifton-Short:

are finding ways to then sort of.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

The relevant pieces of that organization.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Oh, sorry, , relevant pieces of that conversation with

Kendall Clifton-Short:

everyone across the organization.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

So I also think like, how can we as leaders really create an opportunity

Kendall Clifton-Short:

for everybody in the, in an appropriate way in a, an, in a meaningful sort.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Experience, have this conversation because if we're not tapping into what the

Kendall Clifton-Short:

experience of working at this organization has been like for everybody, then we're

Kendall Clifton-Short:

really missing a massive opportunity to get them engaged and be really intentional

Kendall Clifton-Short:

about what type of experience we're trying to create for them moving forward too.

Anique Coffee:

Hmm.

Anique Coffee:

That's a great build.

Anique Coffee:

And even to take that a step further, we often do this with leadership

Anique Coffee:

teams, but it doesn't mean you can't do it as an individual leader as.

Anique Coffee:

and really kind of put that personal lens on it.

Anique Coffee:

Like how have I grown as a leader this year?

Anique Coffee:

What have I been most proud of in the way that I've led?

Anique Coffee:

So there's ways to create team alignment, but also just

Anique Coffee:

self-learning and self alignment too.

Anique Coffee:

Right.

Anique Coffee:

Great.

Anique Coffee:

Okay.

Anique Coffee:

That's step one.

Anique Coffee:

Step two is really all about reconnecting to the why.

Anique Coffee:

So let's start by just saying and hearing from the two of you, what's the importance

Anique Coffee:

of reconnecting to the why you want to.

Nikki de Vet:

Yeah.

Nikki de Vet:

When you say why I immediately go to purpose, like why are we here at the

Nikki de Vet:

highest, at the highest contact level?

Nikki de Vet:

Like why is our organization in business, why am I leading this team?

Nikki de Vet:

Like whatever level of purpose that, that you connect to.

Nikki de Vet:

And I think it's when you connect to the why, whether it's your personal

Nikki de Vet:

why or your organizational purpose, you go straight to the heart of

Nikki de Vet:

what is important to you and what is important to your organization.

Nikki de Vet:

Like if you.

Nikki de Vet:

. If you think about the work that we do around purpose,

Nikki de Vet:

like it's so rooted in impact.

Nikki de Vet:

So it goes directly to the impact that you wanna make as an organization and

Nikki de Vet:

therefore like if you wanna grow, like should be technically in service of

Nikki de Vet:

that impact that you're looking to make.

Nikki de Vet:

So I feel that whenever.

Nikki de Vet:

We speak to leaders around this, it's like, how do you use your purpose or

Nikki de Vet:

how do you use your why as a reason to gather people around and therefore

Nikki de Vet:

help them understand help your team understand like why they're here as well.

Nikki de Vet:

What their connection to their, their own connection to the

Nikki de Vet:

purposes, and therefore how and why we're all gonna grow this organiz.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Yeah.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

I think also to bring it down a slightly lot, one step down from that

Kendall Clifton-Short:

too, you know, the nature of strategic planning or thinking about how we

Kendall Clifton-Short:

wanna grow or what we wanna achieve in some next defined time period.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Whether that's, like you said, a month, six months, you know, a year, five years.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

There, there's an element of change there.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Like by definition, what do we want to stop doing and start doing and, and

Kendall Clifton-Short:

where I'll be trying to get ourself and what is that going to ask of us?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

And I think that.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Often it's easy for us as leaders to be really connected to that.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Why, especially when we have the privilege of sitting sort of high

Kendall Clifton-Short:

up the hierarchy of an organization and, and everything we do is really

Kendall Clifton-Short:

in the context of what is gonna drive that impact we're trying to achieve.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

It's easier for people beneath us to feel less connected to that why and so,

Kendall Clifton-Short:

and just feel like, oh, another thing we're being asked to do more change.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

More change, more change.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

So I think it's really important.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

For us to really help our people connect like we are doing this

Kendall Clifton-Short:

because of, we want to get to that.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Like it's not just me asking you to do something different for the sake of it.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

It's very intentional.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

We're trying to get here because of we're trying to deliver this impact and

Kendall Clifton-Short:

this is what that's gonna take of us.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

So this is what it's gonna ask of you.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

And if I feel really connected, like Nikki's saying to like, of course, If

Kendall Clifton-Short:

that's the thing that's going to move the needle in delivering the impact

Kendall Clifton-Short:

that I am invested in delivering, I'm on board like, great, yep.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Let, let's go.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Whereas if I feel quite like, oh, it's just another thing I'm being asked to

Kendall Clifton-Short:

do and, and we haven't taken the time to draw the connection to that with the

Kendall Clifton-Short:

impact that people are looking for from their work, then it's a much bigger hill.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

We're asking people to climb and it's a.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Different experience that they're having of the change process

Kendall Clifton-Short:

within an organization too.

Anique Coffee:

Alright, thanks Kendall.

Anique Coffee:

Let's move on to step three, which is all about vision.

Anique Coffee:

Defining the outcomes that you wanna see and setting the

Anique Coffee:

intention for how you want to grow.

Anique Coffee:

So the question I have for you here is, how might you help a leader create

Anique Coffee:

an inspiring vision for the future?

Anique Coffee:

Who wants to.

Anique Coffee:

Yes.

Nikki de Vet:

Happy to start.

Nikki de Vet:

How might we help leaders do this?

Nikki de Vet:

Yes.

Nikki de Vet:

Like this is the fun part to me because this is where you can

Nikki de Vet:

get so creative if you want.

Nikki de Vet:

And really depending on what the organization is like and their op,

Nikki de Vet:

their appetite to step into different ways of, of working and creating.

Nikki de Vet:

You can get as creative and goofy as you like.

Nikki de Vet:

An important thing I think to really hone in on first is like, what is the

Nikki de Vet:

timeline of our vision going to be, right?

Nikki de Vet:

If we're gonna vision for the future are we just thinking the year ahead?

Nikki de Vet:

Are we thinking three years ahead?

Nikki de Vet:

Are we thinking five or 10 years ahead?

Nikki de Vet:

You know, what's, what's that kind of You know, appetite like that the leader has.

Nikki de Vet:

And I think it really also depends yeah, what they, what

Nikki de Vet:

they wanna achieve with it, right?

Nikki de Vet:

Like often we work with leaders that are really wanting to focus

Nikki de Vet:

on a, on a vision for growth.

Nikki de Vet:

And really looking at growth like through.

Nikki de Vet:

Through a holistic lens.

Nikki de Vet:

So how can we make sure that the growth becomes not just more and

Nikki de Vet:

more and better and bigger, right?

Nikki de Vet:

But also takes in counter people and the culture that we're looking to create

Nikki de Vet:

here and the impact for that we serve.

Nikki de Vet:

And then it's all about like, how are we going to create that?

Nikki de Vet:

How are we gonna create that picture of the future?

Nikki de Vet:

Like we very much see the vision as an exciting picture of the future.

Nikki de Vet:

And what kind of conditions are we going to do the visioning

Nikki de Vet:

exercise in, so to speak?

Nikki de Vet:

So something we did with one of our clients in London this was during

Nikki de Vet:

summer actually, and it's a, a recruitment and executive search

Nikki de Vet:

firm in the sustainability space We.

Nikki de Vet:

Thir 40 actually of their people together in one in one big

Nikki de Vet:

room and created an entire day.

Nikki de Vet:

Allowed them to really dream big and dream into the future for them.

Nikki de Vet:

The time horizon was five years from now, so it was 2027.

Nikki de Vet:

And what does our organization look and feel like when it comes to the impact

Nikki de Vet:

that we're having on our community?

Nikki de Vet:

Like how are we organized and set up for success to really drive

Nikki de Vet:

the results that we wanna see?

Nikki de Vet:

And therefore, what does that mean our culture needs to

Nikki de Vet:

be, to be able to deliver on.

Nikki de Vet:

. And it was not just like involving the, the top, top leaders.

Nikki de Vet:

It was inviting people from around their business, which is currently operating

Nikki de Vet:

in like four different markets globally.

Nikki de Vet:

And really everyone like getting that a big group of people involved

Nikki de Vet:

with different voices, like from different business parts of their

Nikki de Vet:

business, really hearing what.

Nikki de Vet:

Say about what they would like the future of this organization to be?

Nikki de Vet:

Yeah, to me that's one of the most joyful aspects of our work.

Nikki de Vet:

Really get people creative and thinking and outside of their comfort zone, out of

Nikki de Vet:

their day job in a different environment.

Nikki de Vet:

Like, you can go nuts with magazine sharpies, like Play-Doh, Lego, like

Nikki de Vet:

you name it, and you can bring it in.

Nikki de Vet:

And that's a whole heap of fun.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Love that.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Yeah, I love what you are sharing, Nikki.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

I think there's two parts that you've mentioned, like how do we create the

Kendall Clifton-Short:

conditions for people to even have this sort of conversation or, or

Kendall Clifton-Short:

move through this type of thinking exercise and what is the sort of tool

Kendall Clifton-Short:

that we use to get them thinking and really stretching their thinking?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

And so I, I mean, I've done this, I've taken people on a hike and then

Kendall Clifton-Short:

like had them sitting at the top of a mountain looking over Boze.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

You know, really get, we really need to pull people out of the day to

Kendall Clifton-Short:

day and get them thinking bigger.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

So what's gonna enable them to do that?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Sometimes it's space, sometimes it's a completely ch different

Kendall Clifton-Short:

change of environment.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Sometimes it's a, a, a totally new way to look at things like, go to an

Kendall Clifton-Short:

art exhibition, like, ha have a really immersive experience and then have this

Kendall Clifton-Short:

type of powerful conversation using what you just experienced as an anchor.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

I remember Jeff and I doing this work with.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Company in Boulder in Colorado too, and we just had, it was a brewery,

Kendall Clifton-Short:

and so we had them go and find.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Things in the environment that represented what some of the picture that they saw,

Kendall Clifton-Short:

and that it's such a fun way to sort of tap into what different people bring.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

That there were skis on the table.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

There was a, a glass beaker on the table and all.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

I've done it in Bozeman with another company.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

There was a sprinkler on the table.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Right?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

And so it's really just like, what, what can we find that starts to unlock

Kendall Clifton-Short:

you know, what we wanna see in our future so that we can start moving.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Towards it.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

But I think let's be very clear that there's two parts.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

How do we create the conditions for people to have this type of conversation

Kendall Clifton-Short:

and then how do we really stretch them?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Mm-hmm.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

to, to get, have a lot of fun, really.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

I mean, I'm pretty partial also to a meditation or a sort of, Visualization

Kendall Clifton-Short:

activity that we would lead as the way to get them into a different frame of mind,

Kendall Clifton-Short:

and then anything that gets people up and moving and active and having to go on a

Kendall Clifton-Short:

treasure hunt and find things that sort of represent what they can find, see in

Kendall Clifton-Short:

the future, is a really fun way to bring something that can be very like, well,

Kendall Clifton-Short:

let's get our Excel spreadsheet out.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

It's like, no, let's not do that.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Let's go and have a lot of fun with.

Anique Coffee:

I love that.

Anique Coffee:

And I, I really like the, the scavenger hunt around the office because then that

Anique Coffee:

beaker becomes an anchor for that moment when they did that vision with you.

Anique Coffee:

And then they see this inanimate object, a beaker, and it reminds them like,

Anique Coffee:

oh, that's a connection to our vision.

Anique Coffee:

I've done that with a few clients and it's really nice to have that experience.

Anique Coffee:

Great.

Anique Coffee:

And I

Kendall Clifton-Short:

think you can use powerful exercises and anchors too to

Kendall Clifton-Short:

help unlock why we need to be doing this.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

I remember.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Building, like having my clients all stand in a circle and like we threw a

Kendall Clifton-Short:

ball of wool around the room to sort of understand who needed to be connected to

Kendall Clifton-Short:

each other as the precursor of like, okay, so if this is the sort of connection.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Web that we're trying to build in 2025 or whenever the future is.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Now let's really start to think about who we need to be, what needs to be

Kendall Clifton-Short:

present in our culture and stuff.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

So you can get really creative priming them for why they need this.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

You can get really creative doing the exercise.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

You can get really creative, helping them step out of the day to day.

Nikki de Vet:

Yeah.

Nikki de Vet:

I love a good visualization as well, and I think the visualization is such

Nikki de Vet:

a good way of really stretch them.

Nikki de Vet:

What you're linking to what you were saying Kendall, like to

Nikki de Vet:

really go like, what is different?

Nikki de Vet:

Like if it's five years from now, what is different?

Nikki de Vet:

And often that's such a question or like a, like a nudge that we need

Nikki de Vet:

to give when we work with leaders.

Nikki de Vet:

It's like, it's not now, it's.

Nikki de Vet:

Different from now, what do you see in five years time?

Nikki de Vet:

And really try to kind of push them, because sometimes, you know, people

Nikki de Vet:

forget that what they're actually visioning about is in the future and

Nikki de Vet:

it's not describing the current state.

Nikki de Vet:

So like that kind of little nudge around.

Nikki de Vet:

Okay, but how is that different?

Nikki de Vet:

And why is that, why is that important that it, that it's different in that way?

Nikki de Vet:

And our visualization is a great way of doing.

Nikki de Vet:

, Kendall Clifton-Short: and

Nikki de Vet:

really powerful tool If you have.

Nikki de Vet:

I wouldn't say privilege, but the added challenge of doing

Nikki de Vet:

this in a hybrid environment.

Nikki de Vet:

So, you know, we are sort of talking about things that are very tangible

Nikki de Vet:

and in the moment, and we can't hike up a mountain unless we're all together.

Nikki de Vet:

We can't go on a scavenger hunt around the office unless we're together.

Nikki de Vet:

But your.

Nikki de Vet:

A shared visualization, no matter where you are, anywhere in the world, can be

Nikki de Vet:

a really powerful shared experience.

Nikki de Vet:

And then, you know, your home office where, so you can have everyone

Nikki de Vet:

going and finding something in their office and sort of bringing that

Nikki de Vet:

sort of cultural flavor or personal flavor into the conversation too.

Nikki de Vet:

So it, there's definitely ways you can do this in a really powerful

Nikki de Vet:

and meaningful way if you don't have the luxury of all being in.

Anique Coffee:

Yeah.

Anique Coffee:

Yeah.

Anique Coffee:

Those are some great tips for our leaders that have hybrid or remote teams.

Anique Coffee:

I like that a lot.

Nikki de Vet:

Great.

Anique Coffee:

Okay, so in step three, we have the vision, which

Anique Coffee:

is sort of defining what we want things to look like at a set amount

Anique Coffee:

of time, but we also have intention.

Anique Coffee:

So what is an intention for growth?

Anique Coffee:

Maybe we could start there, and how might you help a leader

Anique Coffee:

set an attention for growth?

Anique Coffee:

, what's an intention for growth?

Anique Coffee:

Let's start

Kendall Clifton-Short:

there.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

. Well, I think, I think it's the being that that is the partner to the doing.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Right?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

I think we, we work with lots of leaders who have fallen out

Kendall Clifton-Short:

of love with their business.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

They, they totally believe it.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

The impact is still profound in what they wanna be doing in the

Kendall Clifton-Short:

world, but the experience of doing it is not no longer joyful.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Right.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

And so sometimes to Nikki's point before, it's not just about more, more, more,

Kendall Clifton-Short:

it's about re-imagining the experience.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

, but we can't do that if we're so focused on the doing, doing, doing.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Right.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

So it's, it's really tapping into what would be like this to feel

Kendall Clifton-Short:

like, and sometimes it's helpful to think about what it has felt like

Kendall Clifton-Short:

and if we want that to be different.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

You know, sometimes you don't need to do that.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

It's just really like, how would we like this to feel moving forward?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

And so the more we can counter, like how do we want it to feel, that's

Kendall Clifton-Short:

gonna then influence what we wanna do.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

If we want.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

We, I, we did this work with this awesome company in Canada last year

Kendall Clifton-Short:

where we really explored what had growth felt like previously, and that was.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Being dragged behind a galloping horse, right?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

And so when we just stopped and paused and said, okay, what would we

Kendall Clifton-Short:

like it to feel like moving forward?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Well, we would like it to feel like we were gracefully riding a unicorn

Kendall Clifton-Short:

in a beautiful forest, right?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

So, so radically different experience, but that was such a powerful anchor

Kendall Clifton-Short:

to shape every single decision.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

that was then, okay.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

No, we're not doing any more sprints, right?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Because that's the horse dragging us along.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Sort of at, at its mercy where what we're going to do is slow everything down.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

That doesn't mean that we need to necessarily change our impact goals.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

It means that we need to approach them with a radically different mindset.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

And so it can be a creative constraint.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

It can also be a.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Creative Unlocker because we now have this really powerful intention

Kendall Clifton-Short:

that we're trying to bring into the experience of the doing, and that then

Kendall Clifton-Short:

unlocks powerful questions for us.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Like, well, if that's what I need, if that's what I'm looking to experience,

Kendall Clifton-Short:

or if that's what I would love.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

To, to be creating as an experience for my people.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

What's that asking of me?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Who do I need to be as well as, what do I need to be doing?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

And so that really powerful partner to the doing, which is the being.

Nikki de Vet:

Yeah, I completely echo what, what Kendall just said.

Nikki de Vet:

I think it's the, the intention is the energy that you wanna bring to it, right?

Nikki de Vet:

So what is the, what is the energy and the experience of what, what

Nikki de Vet:

growth is going to be like for us?

Nikki de Vet:

And the, the key word here, B as, as Kendall already said, and.

Nikki de Vet:

If we set this intention together, how do we hold that intention

Nikki de Vet:

throughout, throughout the year, right?

Nikki de Vet:

How can we make sure that we have an anchor for it, for instance, or maybe

Nikki de Vet:

it's a beautiful phrase like gracefully writing the unicorn together, , something

Nikki de Vet:

that people can really connect to, you know, so that you can also start to

Nikki de Vet:

use it and it can become part of your language and your vocabulary, right?

Nikki de Vet:

So then when you go through the year and your team feels stuck or.

Nikki de Vet:

You know, you might be running at a pace where you go a million

Nikki de Vet:

miles an hour and it's really not the energy you wanna bring to it.

Nikki de Vet:

Like, can be a great reminder like, Hey team, let's reconnect to this.

Nikki de Vet:

What do we need to reconnect to this energy?

Nikki de Vet:

You know, what do we need as individuals?

Nikki de Vet:

What do we need as a team?

Nikki de Vet:

How can we bring it back to that?

Nikki de Vet:

Yeah, and it serves as a, as a great way of keeping the right sort of

Nikki de Vet:

flow and pace throughout the year.

Anique Coffee:

Love that.

Anique Coffee:

Yeah.

Anique Coffee:

The anchor for leaders is really helpful, isn't it?

Anique Coffee:

It's like Anchor or even maybe like a filtering system.

Anique Coffee:

Like does it feel like we're still gracefully riding?

Anique Coffee:

Okay, something needs to change.

Anique Coffee:

I like that one a lot.

Anique Coffee:

And it

Kendall Clifton-Short:

become, I love what you're saying there too, Anika, and

Kendall Clifton-Short:

it becomes not just the, the anchor for leaders, but you know, I've seen often

Kendall Clifton-Short:

leaders put that out in, in the open and say, Hey, this is our intention.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Like collectively, is this what we want the experience of work to be like?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Yes, of course.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Who doesn't want to be gracefully riding along on a unicorn together?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

You know, people, you all have.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

The opportunity to call us when we are doing things in a way that is going to

Kendall Clifton-Short:

prevent this from being the experience like this is not just me saying like,

Kendall Clifton-Short:

okay, this is my wish and like good luck.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

It's, it's really an invitation for all of you to be the light or be the

Kendall Clifton-Short:

torch that sort of is shown up and say to, to say, hold on a minute, , what

Kendall Clifton-Short:

can we just revisit or get curious about why we might do it this way?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Because is this not going to.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

To having us experience being dragged by the horse.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

What if we challenged ourself to find a new way, which would

Kendall Clifton-Short:

still unlock the graceful riding?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

So yeah, I think it can be really powerful for leaders, obviously, and it

Kendall Clifton-Short:

can help them fall in love, back in love with the business that they're owning.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

But I think it can also be a really powerful rally cry, if you like,

Kendall Clifton-Short:

for them to bring all their people.

Nikki de Vet:

Yeah.

Nikki de Vet:

Love that.

Nikki de Vet:

Absolutely.

Nikki de Vet:

Yeah, love that too.

Nikki de Vet:

And that sort of also reminded me like the power of setting an intention, right?

Nikki de Vet:

Also as an individual, like if you think about like, how would I, how would I

Nikki de Vet:

personally let this like next three months to feel, you know, or this month even?

Nikki de Vet:

What is the intention I'm holding for that?

Nikki de Vet:

Like how can I bring myself back to that?

Nikki de Vet:

Like when it comes to personal growth, Really trying to manage your own

Nikki de Vet:

energy, setting the right boundaries for yourself so you can really like

Nikki de Vet:

go after the vision that you've set with the rest of your organization.

Nikki de Vet:

I find it a really powerful tool to work with, like setting intention for

Nikki de Vet:

teams, for organizations, for yourself.

Nikki de Vet:

Yeah.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

It can really help you tap into those

Kendall Clifton-Short:

sort of qualities in yourself that.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Sort of pop out immediately, like, oh, you know, maybe if this is my intention,

Kendall Clifton-Short:

what I'm gonna need to bring to the next three months is a ton of curiosity.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

And that's gonna be a stretch for me because maybe it's not the thing that

Kendall Clifton-Short:

I reach for when things get tough.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

So I think it can really help you as a leader step into bringing the

Kendall Clifton-Short:

things that like aren't your first response so that you can sort.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Get, build a stronger muscle around, well what's, what's really, what's

Kendall Clifton-Short:

it really gonna take here for me as the leader of this organization or

Kendall Clifton-Short:

for this as an individual so that I can support my people to experience

Kendall Clifton-Short:

and, and contribute to us having this thing that we've decided we want.

Anique Coffee:

Love that.

Anique Coffee:

. Okay, let's keep moving.

Anique Coffee:

So we've done step one, which is reflection.

Anique Coffee:

Step two, reconnecting to the why.

Anique Coffee:

Step three, setting the vision, intention.

Anique Coffee:

And step four is really the how.

Anique Coffee:

How are we gonna create the change?

Anique Coffee:

How are we gonna do the doing?

Anique Coffee:

If the intention is the B, now it's time to actually step into the how.

Anique Coffee:

So the question I've got for you here are, what are some of the

Anique Coffee:

ways you've brought the vision and intention to life with leaders?

Anique Coffee:

, how have you really built out the how for them or with them?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Well, I think there's lots of creative ways to do this.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Many organizations already do this bit quite well, . I think for me it's

Kendall Clifton-Short:

always how can we stop telling people what they should do and start inviting

Kendall Clifton-Short:

people into shaping what we see as.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

The, the first step or the first experiment we wanna have in service

Kendall Clifton-Short:

of delivering on these outcomes.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

So I think once you have set that, once you have that clarity, really the next

Kendall Clifton-Short:

step is, is bringing your people around it so that they can then step into aligning

Kendall Clifton-Short:

on how they would like to contribute or, or the opportunity that they.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

For them as a team lead or as a department or, you know,

Kendall Clifton-Short:

depending on the organization.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

But I think for me, h how are we gonna do this?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

We're gonna put that question out to our people and we're gonna crowdsource what

Kendall Clifton-Short:

they think is going to be, and then debate like what comes up and, and sort of get

Kendall Clifton-Short:

all collectively get on the same bus.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

But, but we, we stop thinking that we need to tell them how we do it and we start

Kendall Clifton-Short:

inviting them to, to co-create that with.

Nikki de Vet:

What, like, yeah.

Nikki de Vet:

Loved what what you just said, Kendall.

Nikki de Vet:

I feel totally, this is the moment where you involve your people and really it's

Nikki de Vet:

an opportunity to empower them, right?

Nikki de Vet:

And really let them step into the power and tap into their

Nikki de Vet:

wisdom that they hold because.

Nikki de Vet:

We are a big fan of like, obviously involved the people that are impacted

Nikki de Vet:

by the decisions that you're making.

Nikki de Vet:

And if you set a vision in a way, it's kind of making a decision of

Nikki de Vet:

the direction that you're going and like how you're gonna get there.

Nikki de Vet:

Your people are gonna do that for you as leaders, right?

Nikki de Vet:

Like your teams are going drive that.

Nikki de Vet:

So to me it's just a no brainer that they have to have a say in, in how you might

Nikki de Vet:

go about that and really give them some autonomy and freedom to, to play with.

Nikki de Vet:

And again, like there's different ways of going about it because it's almost

Nikki de Vet:

start to sound when you start to plan, it almost becomes a strategy, right?

Nikki de Vet:

Like, so if this is our vision, what is our strategy for getting there?

Nikki de Vet:

And there's creative ways you can do that as well.

Nikki de Vet:

Like if you think about like your vision being some sort of timeline

Nikki de Vet:

into the future, like can you put in some lily pads that are really

Nikki de Vet:

going to be your milestones?

Nikki de Vet:

What are going to be the key on lockers, for instance, without going into masses

Nikki de Vet:

of detail and helping people understand like, okay, if this is a five year

Nikki de Vet:

vision, where are we after year one?

Nikki de Vet:

Where are, where are we after year two?

Nikki de Vet:

And then.

Nikki de Vet:

to be able to get there.

Nikki de Vet:

What are the li what are the things that we really need to group around as a team?

Nikki de Vet:

What are, what is really going to be important?

Nikki de Vet:

And alongside that, I think to also explore what are the things that might be

Nikki de Vet:

stopping us or like standing in our way.

Nikki de Vet:

You know, what are our blockers or what can we anticipate the blockers

Nikki de Vet:

might be that we come across So we yeah, are prepared for those

Nikki de Vet:

and how might we overcome them?

Nikki de Vet:

I always find very interesting in terms of the convers.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

I think there's something really energizing when you

Kendall Clifton-Short:

elevate a strategic plan from like, oh, we need to do X, y, and Z times

Kendall Clifton-Short:

27, to like, what are the three key shifts we're looking to make, which is

Kendall Clifton-Short:

really what Nikki's speaking to as well.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Like how do we get clear on like what the first one or two steps are and not be too

Kendall Clifton-Short:

attached to like planning out steps four and five because we really won't know.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Where, where exactly we are, what new things have arisen, what things we

Kendall Clifton-Short:

smashed out of the park in three months that we thought were gonna take a year,

Kendall Clifton-Short:

and what things that we still slogging away at after a year, even though we

Kendall Clifton-Short:

thought it was gonna be three months.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

So I think how can you help people get really clear on the first couple

Kendall Clifton-Short:

of steps and how do you help them elevate like the three key shifts we're

Kendall Clifton-Short:

trying to make here at X, Y, and Z.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

So rather than like, okay, and here's your list of 27 things.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Yeah, I

Nikki de Vet:

love that candle and like especially because you

Nikki de Vet:

dunno what the future holds, right?

Nikki de Vet:

It's such an unknown and a plan never goes to

Kendall Clifton-Short:

plan.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

So , if you

Nikki de Vet:

completely like plan it out to the minutia yeah, you

Nikki de Vet:

also get quite a shock if you don't need to pivot and you don't have the

Nikki de Vet:

flexibility and agility to do that.

Nikki de Vet:

So.

Nikki de Vet:

Absolutely.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

And then there's that creative element too, like.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

, what is the way that we wanna package this that feels very of us?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

So to go back to the outdoor company, like what's, what's the

Kendall Clifton-Short:

next waypoint that we need to get to?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Or what's the next, you know, can on the, on the pathway that we're trying to

Kendall Clifton-Short:

get to, like really just sort of helping people feel connected to this process

Kendall Clifton-Short:

in the essence of who you are as an organization and the impact that you're

Kendall Clifton-Short:

trying to have can really I mean for such a small thing can really unlock some.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Exciting energy around what many people have a story around being a

Kendall Clifton-Short:

pretty boring or Excel spreadsheet.

Anique Coffee:

Yeah.

Nikki de Vet:

But I think you're high highlighting such an important point

Nikki de Vet:

because the format this is going to roll out in it's super important.

Nikki de Vet:

Right.

Nikki de Vet:

So it's like, it needs, needs to be in a format that really.

Nikki de Vet:

For your organization and Excel spreadsheet definitely

Nikki de Vet:

do not work for everyone.

Nikki de Vet:

So what is, what is the kind

Nikki de Vet:

Kendall Clifton-Short: of, I'll be one, but Yeah.

Nikki de Vet:

Okay.

Nikki de Vet:

Maybe

Nikki de Vet:

. Anique Coffee: I love a spreadsheet.

Nikki de Vet:

I.

Nikki de Vet:

So, yeah, what works for you really?

Nikki de Vet:

Like, and what, like how can you make it create, like whether it's

Nikki de Vet:

a document or an another anchor or whatever, so becomes something that

Nikki de Vet:

is lived in the business right.

Nikki de Vet:

And people can really grab onto and wanna pursue yeah.

Nikki de Vet:

Into the future.

Anique Coffee:

Fabulous.

Anique Coffee:

All right.

Anique Coffee:

Those are our four steps.

Anique Coffee:

So we're, we're nearing the end now, which is great.

Anique Coffee:

Thank you so much for sharing some of these stories from around your corners

Anique Coffee:

of the world and and your clients.

Anique Coffee:

Let's just zoom out for a quick second and reconnect to what this

Anique Coffee:

four step process even enables.

Anique Coffee:

So if we're really trying to bring attention to our growth and we

Anique Coffee:

follow these four steps, what does this enable for us as leaders?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Well, I think it enables us to rally all our

Kendall Clifton-Short:

people around being on the journey and powerful allies on that journey.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

And I think it puts us back in the driver's seat of doing it in a way

Kendall Clifton-Short:

that is powerful and meaningful and that we can and love, and that will

Kendall Clifton-Short:

similarly be powerful and meaningful and have our people continue to

Kendall Clifton-Short:

want to be on this journey with us.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

So for me, it's a massive arm unlocker of potential and.

Nikki de Vet:

Yeah, and to just build on that, I think it's also a huge

Nikki de Vet:

opportunity for connection, right?

Nikki de Vet:

How fun that you rally your entire team or organization around this and really

Nikki de Vet:

get everybody's voice in the mix and you know, here hear different perspectives.

Nikki de Vet:

So yeah, I feel it really helps with inclusion and really helps with connect.

Anique Coffee:

Great.

Anique Coffee:

And I'll build on that one more time too, which is really

Anique Coffee:

around clarity and momentum.

Anique Coffee:

Like once you have this clarity, connection comes sometimes even

Anique Coffee:

just from the clarity of everyone knowing exactly what's happening

Anique Coffee:

and how it's going to happen.

Anique Coffee:

And then once everyone's moving in the same direction, momentum is is

Anique Coffee:

inevitable because we're all connected.

Anique Coffee:

We're all aligned, we have a clear plan of moving forward,

Anique Coffee:

and the momentum just goes.

Anique Coffee:

So

Kendall Clifton-Short:

lovely.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

I actually had a leader ask me a week ago, like, but Kendall,

Kendall Clifton-Short:

do you really think that clarity and that alignment is possible?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

You know, as an organization of like 130 people?

Kendall Clifton-Short:

And I was like, Absolutely , but you have to invest in doing this.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

And when you have been in a period of massive growth and moving from

Kendall Clifton-Short:

in person to hybrid and stuff, this is often the thing that has

Kendall Clifton-Short:

fallen off the priority list.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

And so what a great opportunity.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

They're like, put it back at the top.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

And really when you understand that this is the thing that's going to.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Provide that clarity, build that connection, unlock the potential of

Kendall Clifton-Short:

everyone being on the journey and a journey that they're inspired to be on.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

It's pretty easy to like move it back up the priority list.

Kendall Clifton-Short:

Yeah.

Anique Coffee:

I love that.

Anique Coffee:

Great.

Anique Coffee:

Well, thank you both so much for being here and sharing stories from your, your

Anique Coffee:

clients and the leaders you're supporting.

Anique Coffee:

Hope this is helpful for our leader listeners and they can kind of jump

Anique Coffee:

into this four step in their way and bring it to life in their way.

Anique Coffee:

So thanks so much for being here, both of you.

Anique Coffee:

Kendall Clifton-Short: Thanks for having me.

Anique Coffee:

Thank you for having me.

Anique Coffee:

It's been fun.

Anique Coffee:

Yeah.

Anique Coffee:

Y

Nikki de Vet:

yeah.

Nikki de Vet:

Super fun.

Nikki de Vet:

Thank you so much.

Nikki de Vet:

No

Anique Coffee:

worries.

Anique Coffee:

Have a great 2023.

Anique Coffee:

All right.

Nikki de Vet:

Yeah.

Nikki de Vet:

Happy 2023.

Nikki de Vet:

Everyone

Nikki de Vet:

. Kendall Clifton-Short: Well,

Nikki de Vet:

. True.

Nikki de Vet:

Not quite done yet.

Nikki de Vet:

. Nikki de Vet: Almost there.
