Speaker:

Welcome to the Yappy Hour, powered

by Yappily the podcast for dog lovers

2

:

who want to better understand and

connect with their four-legged friends.

3

:

I'm your host Nathan Dunlevy, and today we

are diving into one of the most excitable

4

:

and accessible dog sports out there.

5

:

Hoopers.

6

:

My guest is Carrie Ann Selwyn,

the founder of Canine Hoopers

7

:

World, a platform dedicated to

making hoopers a fun and inclusive

8

:

activity for dogs and their humans.

9

:

In this episode, we explore why hoopers

is the perfect sport for all breeds.

10

:

Ages and abilities, how it strengthens

the bond between dogs and their

11

:

guardian guardians, and how you can

get started even in your own backyard.

12

:

Whether you've got a high

energy pup, a senior dog, or

13

:

just want to try something new.

14

:

This episode is packed with

inspiration and practical advice.

15

:

So grab a cup of tea, settle

in, and let's get started.

16

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Welcome back to the Yappy

17

:

Hour, powered by Yappily.

18

:

I'm your host, Nathan Dunleavy,

and I'm so excited to bring

19

:

you another episode today.

20

:

Even more exciting that we've got the

Queen of Sparkle herself, Carrie Anne

21

:

Salwyn, from Canine Hoopers World.

22

:

I'm so excited to have Carrie on today

it's going to be such a fun episode.

23

:

So Carrie Anne, welcome to the Appy Hour.

24

:

As I've said, I'm so excited

to chat with you today.

25

:

How are you doing?

26

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: am super.

27

:

I'm really good today.

28

:

Thank you very much.

29

:

How are you?

30

:

I

31

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Wow, I've had a few tech

32

:

gremlins today and me and tech.

33

:

Do not go well.

34

:

Give me people in dogs

any day, but give me tech.

35

:

I was recording with Dr.

36

:

Conor Brady this morning and it

was all going a bit Pete Tong.

37

:

But we've man, I've been on with Rosie

Robinson the last hour and a half from

38

:

Yappily trying to get this sorted.

39

:

So, so far, so good.

40

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: mean, I

feel like you've invited a

41

:

chaos goblin onto your podcast.

42

:

So this is possibly why everything's

going a little bit wrong.

43

:

Harry's

44

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Right.

45

:

We'll see how we get on anyway.

46

:

So Carrie, is it Carrie Anne?

47

:

Carrie, what do you prefer?

48

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: fine.

49

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Carrie, right.

50

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: but

we'll just go with Harry.

51

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Carrie,

for those who might not be familiar

52

:

with Hoopers, I dunno how, can you give

us a quick overview of what it is and

53

:

how it differs from other dog sports?

54

:

Like agility?

55

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: So Hoopers is a

It's a sport but it's an activity.

56

:

The reason I love Hoopers is that

all the dogs can get involved.

57

:

So it is a series of obstacles and the

dogs navigate a course and I bet people

58

:

are thinking this sounds like agility.

59

:

The difference with Hoopers,

they're are no jumps.

60

:

no kind of leaving the

floor type obstacles.

61

:

Everything is either they run through it,

they run past it, or they run onto it.

62

:

So from that point of

view, it's lower impact.

63

:

If you watch Viper, Viper makes it

look very exciting and fast, but the

64

:

dogs don't have to go fast to do it.

65

:

Vee's been doing, so Viper is my Malinois

66

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

I was about to say that.

67

:

Yeah.

68

:

Viper.

69

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: she has

70

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Wow.

71

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: introduced to

the hoops and the kind of equipment

72

:

we use since she was about eight,

nine weeks old, just as stuff.

73

:

my old dog, who's now 13, with one eye

and a bit of arthritis and not many teeth

74

:

left, also still plays a bit as well.

75

:

So I have kind of the two extremes

of dog in, size, and energy levels.

76

:

The SAS level is

identical in both of them.

77

:

But the thing I love with Heepers

is just all the dogs can do it

78

:

and you don't need loads and loads

of room to practice bits at home.

79

:

You can practice bits in your living room.

80

:

So

81

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

82

:

Absolutely love that.

83

:

So we'll be learning a little bit more

about that as we go through this episode.

84

:

So Carrie, what inspired you to create

Canine Hoopers World and bring this sport,

85

:

this activity to more dog guardians?

86

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: So for me, I

Discovered this sport back in like

87

:

2017, I think it was that I first

kind of went, Oh, what's this thing?

88

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

89

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: It looked cool.

90

:

And then I did a few instructor courses

and I found that they were quite tailored

91

:

to people that were already doing agility.

92

:

And coming from the pet dog world,

93

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

94

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: I didn't

have an agility background.

95

:

So I wanted to create a course

dog trainers so they could

96

:

teach it to their clients.

97

:

Feeling like they had to be a

sport dog handler, you know, I

98

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

99

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: be more accessible.

100

:

And the best way to make Saint more

accessible is to teach trainers

101

:

how to teach their clients.

102

:

Because rather than me teaching 15,

20 people a week, if I can teach.

103

:

instructors then they can teach

20 people a week and actually now

104

:

we've got over 600 instructors

105

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

That's amazing.

106

:

That's

107

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: loads of

108

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: amazing.

109

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: access to hoopers.

110

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Yeah, I absolutely love that.

111

:

I love that it's so worldwide.

112

:

So we're going to be moving

on to our next section then.

113

:

So, which is all about why Hoopers, the

benefits for dogs and their guardians.

114

:

One of the things I love about

Hoopers is that it's so accessible.

115

:

We've mentioned that already.

116

:

So just touching on the

accessibility side of things.

117

:

Why do you think?

118

:

It's such an inclusive sport

compared to other activities.

119

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: I feel like not

only about the dogs kind of thing, but

120

:

also thinking about the handler side of

it, because Hoopers, you can distance

121

:

handle, which is kind of the big goal with

Hoopers, or you can run with the dogs.

122

:

So if you have little younglings

come to class that want to run

123

:

around with the dogs, that's cool.

124

:

If you've got adults that care

to run, they can also do that.

125

:

I mean, I don't care for running,

126

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

The same.

127

:

I

128

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: And I love the

fact that if you've got handlers.

129

:

are maybe wheelchair users or to use

a walking aid of some description.

130

:

They can still be handling

Hoopers without worrying about

131

:

having to keep up with the dog.

132

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

love that.

133

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn:

have fun with their dog.

134

:

Also, we've had some dogs that are

actually assistance dogs for wheelchair

135

:

users that kind of use Hoopers as a bit of

an outlet for them to do things as a team.

136

:

without them being close to the chair

and working closely with the handler.

137

:

It gets them to kind of work away and

maybe tap into some of the genetic

138

:

things that we've bred the gun

139

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

140

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: herders

to do for years and years,

141

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

142

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: know, because

we have a lot of retrievers and

143

:

Labradors that are assistance dogs.

144

:

And actually.

145

:

They're working close to their

handlers a lot, whereas when we look

146

:

at what they were originally bred for,

they're designed to kind of work away.

147

:

So Hooper's is quite a nice bridge

between that genetic need and what the

148

:

handler is physically capable of as well.

149

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Yeah, absolutely love that.

150

:

No, it's great that

everyone can get involved.

151

:

So many people assume that dog sports are

only for your high energy working breeds,

152

:

but Hooper seems to be for everyone.

153

:

So what makes it so different?

154

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: I mean, I started

originally with my Chihuahua, so

155

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Yes, I've heard this story

156

:

because I've got three chihuahuas.

157

:

So yeah, love it.

158

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: Lynx is kind of

the reason I went, Oh my God, I love

159

:

this thing because I was looking for

an activity to do with her and she

160

:

does a bit of tricks and she does a

bit of this and she does a bit of that.

161

:

But when we found Hoopers,

it was like it just clicked.

162

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Oh,

163

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: was

164

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: yeah.

165

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: click and

we went, thing's fun together.

166

:

And one of my favorite photos is of the

first workshop I did with me and Minks,

167

:

and you can just see in one little

image, how much fun we are having.

168

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Oh, really?

169

:

I love that.

170

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: big thing for me.

171

:

It's about building trust and

teamwork with you and your dog.

172

:

And that's what owning

a dog is about, right?

173

:

Trust and teamwork.

174

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah,

so you've got from the size of a Chihuahua

175

:

all the way up to a German Shepherd and a

Malinois, you know, all shapes and sizes.

176

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: had Danes doing it.

177

:

Irish Wolfhounds, Bulls, Dr.

178

:

Bordeaux's.

179

:

Like it's not a size this sport.

180

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

No, good.

181

:

Oh, I love that the little

Chihuahuas got involved.

182

:

So how does participating in

Hoopers strengthen that bond

183

:

between a dog and their guardian?

184

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: So, for me, doing

anything with your dog is going to

185

:

strengthen your relationship, right?

186

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

187

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: that bang on about

training, they think about training as

188

:

always being obedient stuff, but actually

it can just be doing some tricks, it

189

:

can be doing a bit of enrichment stuff,

it can just be You and your dog hanging

190

:

out together, but I think more and

more people are getting dogs that were

191

:

previously designed to do working stuff.

192

:

Like I said, you know, the gundogs,

the working breeds, but also a lot of

193

:

these cross breeds that we get, you

know, the kind of designer breeds.

194

:

Think of, prime example

would be a Cockapoo.

195

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yes.

196

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: a Cocka

and a Poodle, both of which

197

:

are technically working breeds,

198

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

199

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: and then go, Oh,

can you live in my house and be a pet?

200

:

I mean, yes, but,

201

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

But there's going to come all this.

202

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: dogs and the

handlers a way of doing some work

203

:

together whilst having fun as well.

204

:

And because it's something that

you can do at home in your garden

205

:

and practice, it's not like you can

only do it once a week at training.

206

:

You can do a little bit every day.

207

:

I mean, this morning, Viper

hasn't been walked today.

208

:

We've had a training day.

209

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Why?

210

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: we did a

bit of hoopers in the garden.

211

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Yeah, and it's been nice,

212

:

it's been nice weather down

213

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: it's a

214

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

here in Southampton.

215

:

Has it been nice where you are?

216

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: It has.

217

:

The bottom of London has actually had

some sun today, which is a lovely thing.

218

:

So, you know, typical Brits, right?

219

:

We're already talking

220

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah,

221

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: and

we're not even 10 minutes in.

222

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: it's

funny because I went past earlier at like

223

:

a park and people were out sunbathing.

224

:

I'm thinking the sun's out, but

it's bloody freezing, bit of sun

225

:

and then us Brits are like, ah,

226

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: Show me you're

British without telling me you're British.

227

:

Sun comes out, so do the legs.

228

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: yeah.

229

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: on earth?

230

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Sun's out, guns out for a

231

:

lot of them down this way.

232

:

That's true.

233

:

Is that viper with you?

234

:

I can see the pointy ears.

235

:

That'd be

236

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: oh yeah, you can

see them in the back of the flyer park.

237

:

Do you want to come and say hi?

238

:

She's

239

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Oh,

240

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: hello.

241

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

yeah, we're saying hello.

242

:

Oh, she's absolutely stunning.

243

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: She,

244

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Dunnan, look at

245

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn:

biased, but she is pretty.

246

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

She is absolutely stunning.

247

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: Yes,

248

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Brilliant.

249

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: boy.

250

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

And I think I heard you say as

251

:

well, that you started doing

Hoobers in your garage at one point.

252

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: Oh

253

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

know, so like from a space perspective.

254

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: when

it was freezing cold

255

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

256

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: news flash,

Chihuahuas don't do cold.

257

:

It's one of the reasons I like them

as a breed because they just don't

258

:

do, they don't do rain, they don't do

259

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: No,

260

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: like,

261

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

they don't.

262

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: I concur.

263

:

And with Minx, yeah, I had like a

little area of the garage set up

264

:

where I just had like a hoop and a

barrel just to practice some like

265

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

266

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: just

to build up on that.

267

:

We call it like a commitment to object.

268

:

So the dog having value in.

269

:

The hoop.

270

:

So hoop value, barrel value,

271

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm.

272

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: hoop is

really a teeny tiny little thing.

273

:

It's only kind of a couple

of centimeters wide.

274

:

So for the dog to be able to be

precise enough to find that obstacle,

275

:

they need to understand what it is.

276

:

So just doing loads of reps of one

hoop is how we build that and how

277

:

we start building up the distance

handling and stuff like that.

278

:

All

279

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

280

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: stuff is just

foundations that's done really well.

281

:

So

282

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

I love that.

283

:

So yeah, you can use your garden, use your

garage, you don't need loads of space.

284

:

So moving on to our next section,

which is all about how Hoopers

285

:

support dogs emotionally and mentally.

286

:

We often hear about the physical

benefits of dog sports, but

287

:

how does Hoopers support dogs

emotionally and mentally, Carrie?

288

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: for me,

it's A big confidence builder.

289

:

So Minx is Jenny.

290

:

Minx can be quite worried by other dogs.

291

:

She's been charged out a few

292

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Oh,

293

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: she, she's tiny.

294

:

You know, she, I mean, in

Chihuahua world, she's massive.

295

:

She's five kilos,

296

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: okay.

297

:

A bit like mine.

298

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: dog world, right?

299

:

She's big.

300

:

Most people's Chihuahuas

are like two, three kilos.

301

:

So I've,

302

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

teacup ones.

303

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: Chihuahua,

304

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

So far I've got chunky ones.

305

:

That's

306

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: Finding an

activity she could do where she

307

:

felt comfortable and safe working

around other dogs was really cool.

308

:

Now,

309

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: lovely.

310

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: this is where I

need to kind of hold myself together

311

:

because the boy's no longer with me,

but my main competition boy Dodge,

312

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

313

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: Shepherds

like patterns, shepherds like

314

:

predictability, and Dodge had

very big emotions in the world.

315

:

He had some physical and arguably some

mental glitches going on, God love him.

316

:

And Hoopers was something that we

could do and he could work and it was

317

:

just a fun thing for me and him and

the thing I loved for doing Hoopers

318

:

with him is it was just me and him.

319

:

All the other stuff goes away, all that.

320

:

My dog needs space.

321

:

My dog, you know, is reactive.

322

:

My dog has big emotions, all that

stuff with comes as an owner.

323

:

I'm like having a dog that is

like that because owning a dog

324

:

with issues, glitches, however you

want to phrase it is exhausting.

325

:

being able to do an activity with

that dog was just so much fun.

326

:

And just loved it.

327

:

And one of the things, That I think was

a really cool achievement with Dodge, not

328

:

just our competition achievements because

he won leagues, he won competitions

329

:

like he did really well, also if I

was judging friends could handle him

330

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Oh, good.

331

:

Yeah, yeah.

332

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: working with

other people doing that assignment.

333

:

For me, that screams confidence

because a dog that isn't comfortable

334

:

isn't going to work for someone else.

335

:

And I'm not saying that every dog should

just go up to anyone and work, but the

336

:

people that were in his circle, would

337

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

a circle of trust.

338

:

Yeah.

339

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: Exactly that.

340

:

So

341

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm.

342

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: for me, Hoopers

has been an amazing outlet as an owner

343

:

that has a dog with big emotions.

344

:

It's been a brilliant thing to play

with my tiny dog that frankly didn't

345

:

really want to do much training of any

346

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

They're just lapdogs.

347

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: Right, but

for it's been a brilliant game to

348

:

play while she's growing up and

349

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

350

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: maybe she shouldn't

be doing as much as she feels she can

351

:

in terms of development because Malinois

don't come with self preservation button.

352

:

This, app was not

downloaded into the system.

353

:

So being able to say to her, well,

look, rather than you jumping on top of

354

:

the garden storage area, has happened.

355

:

Why don't we try running through some

hoops around some barrels instead?

356

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

357

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: for her, she plays

hoopers and goes, I've done some work.

358

:

I'm tired because as much as it's you

as a team, the dog is still having to

359

:

think and process what they're doing.

360

:

It's

361

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm.

362

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: next to you, with

you telling them every single thing.

363

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm.

364

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: It is when the

dog becomes competent in what they're

365

:

doing, can literally shut up and watch

them work, which, that's really cool.

366

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: yeah,

367

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: you forget that

you're actually meant to be steering,

368

:

you're like, oh, shit, cue, sorry yeah,

369

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: yeah,

370

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: goes wrong, but

that's also part of the fun, is that

371

:

even if the dog goes wrong, they

don't know they've gone wrong, and

372

:

you're just having fun together.

373

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

374

:

I bet cause obviously they've probably

quite got a lot of energy, haven't they?

375

:

So it's probably, yeah.

376

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: yeah, I'm gonna say

that if, if you have a spare few hours a

377

:

day to mentally and physically work your

378

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

379

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: know what, yeah.

380

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Yeah, that's what I was thinking.

381

:

Cause you know, got to burn

off a lot of that energy.

382

:

So get her using her brain.

383

:

So for nervous, sensitive,

anxious dogs, how can Hoopers be a

384

:

confidence building activity carry?

385

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: It becomes a pattern.

386

:

It becomes something that's predictable.

387

:

So once they understand what the

equipment means, once they've got that

388

:

equipment value that I spoke about

earlier, they go, Oh, this thing.

389

:

you can start off in your

garden and then maybe.

390

:

You go to a field and try it.

391

:

Maybe you go to a relative's garden

and try it, know, and being able to do

392

:

something with the dog that's predictable

in different environments is a great

393

:

way of building that dog's confidence.

394

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Yeah, pretty.

395

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: me, I think the

environmental side can kind of come

396

:

into it and actually once you are able

to go to competitions, a lot of the

397

:

Hoopers competitions are set up for dogs

that do need a bit of space, those dogs

398

:

that do wear those yellow ribbons that

399

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

400

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: need a little bit more

room, a little bit more understanding.

401

:

Some of the shows are going to be

a big agility show, so they may not

402

:

be appropriate, but some of them.

403

:

Maybe a single ring in an indoor

arena where the dogs kind of

404

:

secured in on three sides.

405

:

So actually, that sort of

environment for dogs that find

406

:

the environment a lot to take in

407

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

408

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: brilliant way to

kind of start getting them into the

409

:

world and competing they're doing

something that they understand.

410

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

411

:

Yeah, definitely.

412

:

Are you going to be

competing with Viper or like?

413

:

Yeah.

414

:

Yeah.

415

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn:

literally counting down

416

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Chomping at the bit.

417

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: the weeks because

we are at the point now where we are

418

:

weeks away from being able to compete.

419

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: wow.

420

:

Okay.

421

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: a lot of the

sports, some of them start at 12 months,

422

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yes.

423

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: because we

start officially at 15 months.

424

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

425

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: I've been taking

her with me when I've been judging

426

:

and testing my courses with her.

427

:

And she's already, like,

having so much fun with

428

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

She's ready.

429

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: some of the

other judges have let me try their

430

:

courses, which has been really nice.

431

:

And she'll finish the run

and I'll give her her toy.

432

:

run up to the judge to give

them the toy to play with.

433

:

She's just like, we did a thing.

434

:

We love it.

435

:

So,

436

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Oh,

437

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: I'm literally, like

excited and I know some people are gonna

438

:

Possibly criticize that because they

may think that i'm doing it too early

439

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: right.

440

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: for her It's not too

441

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: No.

442

:

Yeah.

443

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: she's probably done

about half an hour's hooper training

444

:

a week roughly You know, obviously

sometimes we've done workshops and we've

445

:

done stuff that's a little bit more,

but in terms of kind of over training

446

:

stuff, really don't think we have.

447

:

I think because everything is on the

ground and she understands the game, you

448

:

can go on any of my social media and see

her journey and how she's progressing,

449

:

You just see a dog that's having fun.

450

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

451

:

That's the important thing.

452

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: She'll

come and get cross at me.

453

:

She's like, wait, what are you doing?

454

:

Sort your shit, mama.

455

:

Come on, let's do the thing.

456

:

So it's just us having fun together.

457

:

And the other thing that's been really

interesting with her journey is we've

458

:

started to dabble a little bit in agility.

459

:

And who has has been a cool foundation

460

:

Agility training, because.

461

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: I bet.

462

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: I mentioned

this not running thing agility.

463

:

Allegedly you're meant to do the running

thing a little bit more in agility.

464

:

Now I'm never going to be one of those

handlers that's sprinting like an a

465

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Say.

466

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: y part of my dog.

467

:

Like,

468

:

it's not and

469

:

going through tunnels because

470

:

She can do it with hoops.

471

:

And if you go onto my social media

we had a training session with

472

:

some of her siblings last week

473

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Oh, okay.

474

:

Don't eat it.

475

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: music of me

just stood still while she's just

476

:

running in a circle doing jumps.

477

:

I wasn't telling her to do anything.

478

:

She was just running around in a

circle doing jumps because it was fun.

479

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Yeah, I think that's what comes down

480

:

to, as long as the dog's having fun.

481

:

How do you

482

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: have

fun when you're training.

483

:

If

484

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah!

485

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn:

you're not doing it right.

486

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Now,

I've always said that when I was doing

487

:

in person training, it's got to be fun.

488

:

The moment it's not fun, then,

right, you need to move on.

489

:

So, how do you ensure that Hoopers

remains a low pressure, positive

490

:

experience for all dogs carry?

491

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: Oh, oh,

this might get controversial.

492

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Oh, I like that though.

493

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: me, I have been

big, big advocate for baseless hoops.

494

:

When hoopers first started,

there was a base on the floor.

495

:

Baseless hoops were introduced.

496

:

God, it was.

497

:

the pandemic.

498

:

Now.

499

:

I've only trained Viron basis hoops.

500

:

I would only run Dodge on basis hoops.

501

:

MX prefers basis hoops.

502

:

I watch clients, dogs that

I've trained on both, and the

503

:

dogs just have a smoother run

504

:

Bars.

505

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Okay.

506

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: people will argue

that it's just pole on the floor.

507

:

There have been injuries.

508

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Oh.

509

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: faster dogs actually

because they're not always watching

510

:

where their feet go and they've either

Stood on a bar and said I've watched

511

:

Collies literally flick a hoop in the air

512

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Oh, gosh, right.

513

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: I've seen dogs Slip on

a base bar and I've seen dogs catch feet

514

:

on a base bar So for me basis hoops are

a big way of keeping it more accessible.

515

:

Also, when it comes to course design,

making sure that there's no tight

516

:

turns, there's no of things that

are requiring the dog to do fast

517

:

lead leg changes or stuff like that.

518

:

Some of the organizations

do allow hoop slaloms.

519

:

I don't like them.

520

:

I will not train them.

521

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

What is it?

522

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn:

part of Hooper's World.

523

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: What?

524

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: are not

dissimilar to a Weave in Agility.

525

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Right.

526

:

Okay.

527

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: The dog

528

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

It's not heard that word before.

529

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: things.

530

:

Yeah, exactly, because I don't

have them in Hooper's World.

531

:

As far as I'm concerned, not a thing.

532

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Right.

533

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: I

do not care for them.

534

:

The other thing that we see in some of

the courses in of Scandinavia and those

535

:

areas Germany is the dog going round,

round a barrel and back through a hoop.

536

:

Now, we do that at the start when

we're first teaching the dogs

537

:

equipment, but we kind of come

off of it quite quickly in the UK.

538

:

I think part of the reason for

that is in the countries where you

539

:

see it more commonly in courses,

the course distances are bigger.

540

:

The dog has eight to ten meters

to go from a hoop to a barrel

541

:

back to a hoop, a big distance.

542

:

If the dog only has five meters,

obviously a tiny dog like Minx is

543

:

going to find that relatively easy.

544

:

A dog that's bigger and faster like Viper,

that's a very difficult thing to do.

545

:

Can she do it?

546

:

Yes, would I want her to be doing

it once they're picking up speed?

547

:

No,

548

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Aye.

549

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: we did it when

she was younger and learning how to do

550

:

things, but now she's doing it faster.

551

:

The only time I would do a barrel wrap

basically is if we were working 8 to 10

552

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Okay.

553

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: for me, that's

another thing that I hope judges

554

:

consider when their course designing.

555

:

I think in general because

courses should be flowing.

556

:

There shouldn't be tight turns.

557

:

That's how we keep it

accessible for more dogs

558

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Brilliant.

559

:

Love that.

560

:

Thank you so much.

561

:

So moving on to our next section, which

is all about getting started and what

562

:

pet parents, dog guardians need to know.

563

:

So if someone is completely

new to Hoopers, what's the

564

:

best way to get started?

565

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: So have a look and see

if there is a Hoopers instructor near you.

566

:

the canine Hoopers world instructors

that are listed on our website are

567

:

the ones that offer the Hoopers

awards, can work your way through.

568

:

progress awards with your dogs

and get pretty ribbons without

569

:

having to go to competition.

570

:

But there are of instructors and

places that are teaching Hoopers

571

:

all over the UK, Australia,

572

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yes.

573

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: Canada,

Europe, Africa, like it's spreading

574

:

to so many continents now,

575

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

That's amazing.

576

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: much it's spreading

and I think speak to local clubs because

577

:

if they're not training hoopers yet,

if they know there's an interest then

578

:

they might want to take the course.

579

:

Also tell them Canine Hoopers

World do an instructor course.

580

:

If you are in an area where there are

no instructors, there's no access, do

581

:

have a Hoopers at Home online course

582

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Oh, okay.

583

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: on the

Canine Hoopers World website.

584

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Brilliant.

585

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: So if you go onto

the website and go into I can't remember

586

:

it's either courses or shop also you can

do progress awards with your dog so they

587

:

are called the achievement awards on the

website and you work through the exercises

588

:

with your dog so if you've maybe started a

little bit with hoopers with your dogs and

589

:

you think oh I don't know what to do next.

590

:

I don't know what exercises do.

591

:

You can sign up for the achievement awards

online and work your dogs through those.

592

:

I've also get pretty ribbons for in post.

593

:

So

594

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

That's nice.

595

:

So what equipment do people need to

practice at home and are there any

596

:

simple exercises they could try?

597

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: if you can

kind of make a couple of hoops,

598

:

that's a good place to start.

599

:

Now the hoops.

600

:

are the way we make them when we're kind

of doing them for at home is plumbing

601

:

pipe under floor heating pipe is our

little secret weapon because it holds its

602

:

shape but a hula hoop with a coat hanger

undone will also help hold the hoop shape

603

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: okay.

604

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: worrying about

getting any underfloor heating pipe.

605

:

so you want some upright bits,

which is plumbing pipe you can

606

:

get at any good hardware store.

607

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Hmm.

608

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: feet on both sides

and then a hoop that makes the arch.

609

:

So I believe they are 50 or 60

centimeters wide at the bottom

610

:

and then they're between 80.

611

:

and a meter high at the top.

612

:

So you make yourself an arch,

then you have barrels, laundry

613

:

baskets, pop up garden waste bins,

614

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

615

:

You can get them from

Screwfix, the pop up garden.

616

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: prefix if you're in

Australia Bunnings, if you're in America

617

:

Home Depot, like basically any hardware

store will sell pop up garden bins and

618

:

the pipe you need for making the hoops.

619

:

You can get them from,

620

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm.

621

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: you don't

need loads of equipment.

622

:

And the

623

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: No.

624

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: love is that

you can store it in a small area.

625

:

You don't really need to worry about

tunnels and maps and stuff at home.

626

:

As long as you've got hoops

and the barrels to practice.

627

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm.

628

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: That's bundles,

and if you just have one heap and

629

:

one barrel, you can sit on a chair

in your living room, get two little

630

:

bowls out, and the dog just goes from

one bo Oh, sorry, Viper's getting

631

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Don't apologize.

632

:

Mine are always like that.

633

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: to another.

634

:

Via the hoop.

635

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm.

636

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: And

637

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Brilliant.

638

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: how you build the

639

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Is that simple?

640

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: play the game.

641

:

Super simple.

642

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

643

:

That's what people like, isn't that?

644

:

Yeah.

645

:

Brilliant.

646

:

Yeah.

647

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: can go, Right,

the dog has to go through the hoop.

648

:

I need to say yes as the

dog goes through the hoop.

649

:

And I give them a cookie on the floor.

650

:

Like, that's really easy to see, right?

651

:

The dog goes through the hoop, you

say yes, the dog gets a cookie.

652

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Hmm.

653

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: That's,

that's pretty simple.

654

:

It's easier than explaining

how to make a cup of tea.

655

:

I

656

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

I may find that difficult.

657

:

I love it.

658

:

She's giving you a wash.

659

:

Normally my I've got an

essay dog and he's got.

660

:

Normally he's sat on me, but

he's actually just settled at me.

661

:

And then his sister, she's very needy.

662

:

Typical poodles drama

queens like their dad.

663

:

They just, you know,

want all the attention.

664

:

So they normally take turns of

setting up in my lap, so I don't

665

:

mind dogs making appearance.

666

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: be fair, if,

if you never ever want to go to the

667

:

bathroom on your own again, get mum.

668

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Get out of the set.

669

:

I can't even shower.

670

:

Valkyrie dogs.

671

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: the

drama is strong as well.

672

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Oh, okay.

673

:

Right, we've got another drama.

674

:

You call me a drama llama.

675

:

We've got another one there.

676

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: Massively, massively.

677

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

with that.

678

:

Oh, actually, I might have to show you my

llama, because you're going to love it.

679

:

Before we come off this call, I'm

going to go off camera and show you

680

:

my llama, because it is sparkly.

681

:

As well.

682

:

And I love

683

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: drama

684

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yes.

685

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: It's

686

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

I'm gonna Let me grab it now.

687

:

Hold on.

688

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: That's it.

689

:

Nathan's getting it.

690

:

Nathan is going to show me his

691

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Here is

the sparkly, secret, rainbow, dra llama.

692

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: Oh my goodness.

693

:

Wow.

694

:

I mean,

695

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Someone got me that because you

696

:

called me a drama llama before, but

one of my friends called me a drama

697

:

llama and this is what they got me.

698

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: I mean, if the crown

fits babe, if the crown fits, right?

699

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Anyway,

I've gone off track now, but who cares?

700

:

Right, that's,

701

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: on a podcast

that I'm involved in and we've gone

702

:

off on a tangent somewhere else.

703

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

it's all good.

704

:

It's all good.

705

:

So, do dogs need prior obedience training

or can any dog give Hoopers a go?

706

:

Okay.

707

:

Yeah.

708

:

Hmm.

709

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: be going to a group

class, I'd probably suggest your dog being

710

:

able to stay with you and not run over and

say hi to all the other dogs is helpful.

711

:

But if you're training it at home

or one to one, then absolutely not.

712

:

And this is one of the other

things that's cool about Hoopers.

713

:

It does help with your dog's listening

skills and your communication skills.

714

:

Because to start with, your

dog's not going to have a weight.

715

:

They're not going to understand that

you're going to be a bit away from them.

716

:

But once you start adding those

little elements in, then if your

717

:

dog can do a weight in front of a

hoop, then they can do a weight.

718

:

While you're maybe wanting to clip

their lead on to put them back on at

719

:

the park or you know If your dog can go

720

:

A little bit of a recall, so it's

kind of a good way of cementing some

721

:

of those other behaviors in without

it feeling like it's obedient.

722

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Yeah, I'm not a massive fan of

723

:

the word obedience, but they

need to have, I like life skills,

724

:

maybe some basic life skills or,

725

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: I feel having

a mal, you, there is a level

726

:

of obedience needed because

727

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: yeah,

728

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: of self preservation.

729

:

you know, has to mean sit in

730

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: yeah.

731

:

Okay.

732

:

Well, but basically any, any

dog really can give it a go

733

:

though, is what we're saying.

734

:

Yeah.

735

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: percent.

736

:

100%

737

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Brilliant.

738

:

So we're going to be moving on to a

normal line of just going crazy and

739

:

you'll probably hear something outside.

740

:

Hopefully it won't pick up.

741

:

So our next section is all about

busting myths about Hoopers.

742

:

So Carrie, what are some of the

biggest myths you hear about

743

:

Hoopers and what's the reality?

744

:

Yeah.

745

:

Oh, okay.

746

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: sports, but I

think a big one is only Collies do it.

747

:

Like, no, all the dogs can do it.

748

:

Pollies dominate a lot of dog sports.

749

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

750

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: To be fair,

Malinois and German Shepherds

751

:

also dominate a lot of dog sports.

752

:

You don't have to have one of

those breeds to do Hoopers.

753

:

We have all sorts of dogs coming to play.

754

:

Affenpinschers,

755

:

Airedales, Boston Terriers.

756

:

Datsuns, like all, pretty much like

name a dog breed and I'm sure one of the

757

:

Hoopers trainers will have gone, pardon

me, one of the Hoopers trainers will

758

:

have gone, yeah I've taught one of those,

759

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

760

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: it's super accessible.

761

:

It's also quite good for the breeds

that maybe some of the more high

762

:

impact sports may not be physically

763

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

764

:

That's,

765

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: for,

766

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

that's true.

767

:

Yeah.

768

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: I'm phrasing that

carefully because obviously Everyone

769

:

knows their own dogs, but like no one

needs to see a chunky dog like trying

770

:

to do disc and jump in the air when they

probably aren't fit enough to do it.

771

:

Whereas Hoopers is quite a

good way of building a dog's

772

:

fitness and stamina as well.

773

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Hmm.

774

:

Okay.

775

:

So we've already touched on

this, but another myth is that

776

:

you need to have a big garden or

training field to get started.

777

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: No, not at all.

778

:

So if you've got a mat that's

about, I don't know, if you've got

779

:

an area that's maybe two meters by

a meter, you can train one hoop.

780

:

Obviously dog size dependent.

781

:

If you've got a tiny dog,

that's loads of room.

782

:

If you've got a bigger dog, you might

want a bit more room so the dog can get

783

:

through the hoop before it's rewarded.

784

:

but yeah, in terms of size, like was

working Viper literally on a five meter

785

:

circle this morning, just doing a bit

of a barrel and a hoop and a barrel.

786

:

And I had some stuff, I

spaced the obstacles out.

787

:

five meters apart and I managed

to get three obstacles out in

788

:

a little bit of grass area.

789

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm.

790

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: if you have

access then you have more room to

791

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

792

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: but you don't need

bundles of room you could do it in

793

:

your hallway as long as the surface

you're training on isn't slippery

794

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

795

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: don't need loads of

room you just need it to not be slippy.

796

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

That's it.

797

:

Not slippery.

798

:

Brilliant.

799

:

So would you say hoopers is

more fun and enriching, or is

800

:

it more of a competitive sport?

801

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: I think It's both.

802

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm

803

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: I

804

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Okay.

805

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: both.

806

:

It depends on the team doing it.

807

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

808

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: with

Minx, I did it for fun.

809

:

It was something we could do together.

810

:

With Dodge, oh my god, so competitive.

811

:

With Viper, I'm gonna be competitive.

812

:

Because, naturally, I'm

a competitive person.

813

:

Like,

814

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Okay.

815

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: I like Doing

sports and winning prizes and

816

:

that that's just my personality.

817

:

got lots of clients that

never ever want to compete.

818

:

But actually, this is why I

bought the Progress Awards in and

819

:

the Achievement Awards online.

820

:

So people that maybe didn't want to

go to a show, but maybe wanted to

821

:

achieve something could still do that.

822

:

Sign.

823

:

That's kind of why I

introduced those awards.

824

:

So people that wanted to have fun

with their dogs without having

825

:

to go to a competition could,

826

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Hmm.

827

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: if you

want to go and compete for your

828

:

dog, then absolutely you can.

829

:

And you'll have the best time.

830

:

International

831

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Okay, cool.

832

:

So just another question.

833

:

You've taught it all over

the world, haven't you?

834

:

Australia?

835

:

Yeah.

836

:

That's amazing that it's took you.

837

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: trainer and judge.

838

:

Cause I've judged in Australia as

839

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Have you?

840

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: that was super fun.

841

:

Yeah.

842

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

843

:

Whereabouts in Australia was it, Carrie?

844

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: done say we

Hoopers World have been to Perth.

845

:

I'm hoping that in the not

so distant future, we will be

846

:

hitting other parts of Australia.

847

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Oh, okay.

848

:

Well, I mean, I love Australia.

849

:

I don't know if you know, but I

met my husband there in Perth,

850

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: Ooh!

851

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: And I've

got family in Perth and friends in Sydney.

852

:

So I was just really interested

because like, we, we love Australia.

853

:

We've been back a few times since we've

been married, but it's, I love it.

854

:

So I just wondered where you'd been.

855

:

I know you'd been there, but

I didn't know quite where.

856

:

Wow.

857

:

Okay.

858

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: trainers

as far over as Queensland now.

859

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Perfect.

860

:

Yeah.

861

:

Oh, okay.

862

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: Hoopers Australia now

they have competitions out there as well.

863

:

So it's really cool.

864

:

Yeah.

865

:

So for any of the, anyone in Australia

listening, like you can access the

866

:

instructor course obviously online, but

there is access now to competitions and

867

:

other Hoopers trainers out in Oz as well.

868

:

So yeah, it's cool.

869

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah,

because you said that you'd like, it was

870

:

international, so it's, it's sort of go,

it's hitting a lot of different countries.

871

:

That's amazing.

872

:

You must be saying, right, right,

873

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: I'd

say, roughly 10 years now.

874

:

It's kind of, it's, it's

coming up to that decade mark.

875

:

It originally started in America.

876

:

Sharon Nelson, who sadly is

no longer on this mortal coil

877

:

with us invented the hoop.

878

:

And

879

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: right.

880

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: be

881

:

eternally grateful to her for up

with this little skinny obstacle that

882

:

has created this whole fun activity

around playing croquet with your dogs.

883

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

884

:

Oh, brilliant.

885

:

So original, originated in, in America.

886

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: Yeah.

887

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Okay, perfect.

888

:

Carrie.

889

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: over from America

890

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Well, yeah Well,

891

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn:

shouldn't say that, should I?

892

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

it's okay.

893

:

So actually I just want to I'm just

gonna rewind a little bit so You

894

:

started off as a pet dog trainer,

but what actually made you to like

895

:

launch Canine Hoop as well day.

896

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: So

I was teaching classes.

897

:

I was starting to kind of do workshops,

doing stuff with other trainers.

898

:

And when I discovered Hoopers, I was

just like more pet dogs need to do this.

899

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm

900

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: Just

901

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: hmm

902

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: So my goal

is that pet dog trainers will be

903

:

teaching Hoopers rather than agility.

904

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Oh, okay

905

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: I know is maybe a bit

controversial, but for me, especially now

906

:

I'm learning about agility properly and

I'm kind of training my own dog properly.

907

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Okay

908

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: You need

a lot of specialist equipment.

909

:

You need to know what you're doing

and agility trained badly dangerous.

910

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: but yeah

911

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn:

having dogs go over jumps.

912

:

and not understanding the heights of

things and just how to progress dogs

913

:

and the techniques that are required.

914

:

Whereas a dog running through a hoop, I

mean, they may catch a toe, maybe, but

915

:

the risk of a dog Going through a hoop as

opposed to over a jump is massively less.

916

:

And

917

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

918

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: just feel for

a lot of dogs that maybe don't have

919

:

the fitness levels to do agility

920

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm.

921

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: a lot of pet

dogs, let's face it, aren't fit.

922

:

They are overweight.

923

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

924

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: of times

I get told my dogs are skinny,

925

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: God.

926

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: dogs

aren't skinny, my dogs are fit,

927

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

928

:

They're fair.

929

:

Yeah.

930

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: my dogs

are the weight they should be.

931

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yes.

932

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: often are you

in a park and you see fat dogs?

933

:

But people see that as normal.

934

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: I know.

935

:

I

936

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: in general, right?

937

:

I mean, I'm carrying a few more pounds

938

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

was saying my, my love.

939

:

I'm like, yeah.

940

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: But we don't

go, Oh my God, I'm drunk because

941

:

you walk down the road and most

people are a similar size to us.

942

:

But you notice the people that

are very, very fit because they

943

:

stand out it's not the norm.

944

:

And I think it's become

the same with dogs.

945

:

So dogs doing hoopers is a much

better form of fitness than

946

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Hmm.

947

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: doing sports

that are going to require them to be.

948

:

jumping or doing lots of repetitive

body movements that they may

949

:

not be physically fit for.

950

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Hmm.

951

:

I don't know if it was you or the

other person that was interviewing on

952

:

the podcast, but did it, did you or

the other person just fully do only

953

:

Hooper's classes and nothing else?

954

:

That was you.

955

:

Yeah.

956

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: was

957

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

958

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: I took a huge

leap of faith and when I don't

959

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Hmm.

960

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: other stuff,

961

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Anymore.

962

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: I

963

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: And

you just sort of niche down to that.

964

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: oh,

I, I like super niched.

965

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Super niche.

966

:

Everyone goes on about niching

and you're super niche.

967

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: I super niched.

968

:

I like niched within a niche.

969

:

Like So, it's kind of, I, I feel like

you hear my name and you straight

970

:

away think of Hoopers without even

necessarily knowing what Hoopers is.

971

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yes.

972

:

Yeah.

973

:

You're right.

974

:

Okay.

975

:

So I went off.

976

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: all

about the brand, babe.

977

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

It is all about the brand babes.

978

:

Yeah.

979

:

I'm all about the brand.

980

:

So I did go off on a tangent.

981

:

So Carrie, if you could give pet parents,

dog guardians, one reason to try Hoopers,

982

:

what would that reason be, please?

983

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: It's fun.

984

:

Well, that

985

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

It's fun.

986

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: right

987

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

What more reasons do you need?

988

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: wasn't it?

989

:

It's fun.

990

:

Boom.

991

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

What more do I need to say?

992

:

You want to have fun with your dog.

993

:

That's what I was saying the other day.

994

:

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: Exactly that right.

995

:

If, if you can do something that fulfills

your dog, mentally and physically, and

996

:

is fun for both of you, why wouldn't you?

997

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

998

:

Yeah.

999

:

Cause it built.

:

00:44:49,186 --> 00:44:51,776

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: the question

would be like, why shouldn't you,

:

00:44:51,940 --> 00:44:52,100

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

:

00:44:52,156 --> 00:44:55,056

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: like, just try it.

:

00:44:55,756 --> 00:44:55,946

You

:

00:44:56,140 --> 00:44:56,280

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: it's,

:

00:44:56,486 --> 00:44:57,596

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: until you've tried.

:

00:44:57,880 --> 00:44:58,110

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: yeah.

:

00:44:58,110 --> 00:45:00,980

You don't know until you try,

but it's all about building

:

00:45:00,980 --> 00:45:02,800

that bond, that relationship.

:

00:45:03,315 --> 00:45:06,695

You know, that whole sort of

connecting with your dog and yeah.

:

00:45:06,745 --> 00:45:07,455

Yeah, I love that.

:

00:45:07,615 --> 00:45:14,055

So if anyone or someone was feeling about

a bit unsure about trying a new activity

:

00:45:14,195 --> 00:45:16,545

with their dog, what would your advice be?

:

00:45:17,916 --> 00:45:18,766

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: So.

:

00:45:19,446 --> 00:45:24,826

Speak, speak to a local club, speak to

a local trainer come and look at the

:

00:45:24,826 --> 00:45:30,156

Canine Hoopers World stuff on Facebook

if you want to watch some fun training

:

00:45:30,176 --> 00:45:36,906

stuff Canine Hoopers World on TikTok

I'm always Viper doing stuff and it's

:

00:45:36,906 --> 00:45:41,876

not always Hoopers, like, it's just

Viper doing crazy Mali stuff and it's.

:

00:45:42,236 --> 00:45:45,606

features occasionally bless her heart,

although she's pretty much retired.

:

00:45:45,606 --> 00:45:51,116

She's basically a sophomore but

for me, it's, it's something

:

00:45:51,116 --> 00:45:52,806

that you can try at home.

:

00:45:52,826 --> 00:45:57,026

And as I said, if you're thinking

that you're not sure whether you'd

:

00:45:57,046 --> 00:46:00,936

want to go to a class and do it,

you can have a look at the online

:

00:46:00,936 --> 00:46:01,936

stuff and do it online with us.

:

00:46:02,311 --> 00:46:03,351

It's

:

00:46:03,680 --> 00:46:04,090

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

brilliant.

:

00:46:04,120 --> 00:46:08,310

Okay, so we've literally sailed

through this episode Carrie, so

:

00:46:08,310 --> 00:46:09,740

we're going to start wrapping up

:

00:46:10,131 --> 00:46:10,481

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: a change.

:

00:46:11,820 --> 00:46:13,080

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

We're going to start wrapping up the

:

00:46:13,080 --> 00:46:17,550

last sort of five minutes or so So

just a couple of final questions.

:

00:46:17,560 --> 00:46:21,600

So what's next for canine Hooper's world?

:

00:46:21,940 --> 00:46:23,770

Where's the sparkle going next?

:

00:46:23,770 --> 00:46:24,920

What, what's your plans?

:

00:46:24,940 --> 00:46:26,800

Any reveals for our listeners?

:

00:46:27,110 --> 00:46:28,340

Anything going on?

:

00:46:28,390 --> 00:46:31,670

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: I'm kind of

evolving the way that the instructor

:

00:46:31,690 --> 00:46:38,730

course is being taught, so it will

be staying online, but I'm kind

:

00:46:38,780 --> 00:46:42,780

of, I'm going to use one of my

favorite words now, I'm amalgamating.

:

00:46:43,649 --> 00:46:44,589

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Now that's a big word.

:

00:46:44,589 --> 00:46:47,699

I love that.

:

00:46:47,745 --> 00:46:48,135

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: day.

:

00:46:49,475 --> 00:46:54,665

I am bringing Level 1 and

Level 2 as one course.

:

00:46:54,765 --> 00:46:59,205

And there's going to be a lot more

Carrie Sparkle because I'm also going

:

00:46:59,225 --> 00:47:01,115

to be doing live coaching on Zoom.

:

00:47:01,545 --> 00:47:04,865

So, when you did the

instructor course online, you

:

00:47:04,939 --> 00:47:06,189

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

it was a while ago now.

:

00:47:06,398 --> 00:47:09,352

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: of set free to

work through it at your own pace,

:

00:47:09,429 --> 00:47:10,379

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

:

00:47:10,426 --> 00:47:12,845

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: want to

change it is that you're going to

:

00:47:12,855 --> 00:47:14,795

have 6 months to do the course.

:

00:47:15,289 --> 00:47:16,019

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Okay,

:

00:47:16,420 --> 00:47:18,180

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: you're

going to have access to me for

:

00:47:18,180 --> 00:47:19,890

six months to ask questions

:

00:47:19,989 --> 00:47:20,319

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: really?

:

00:47:20,890 --> 00:47:22,490

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: and

do that kind of stuff.

:

00:47:22,590 --> 00:47:23,310

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

That's amazing.

:

00:47:23,361 --> 00:47:25,321

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: like

that's the way I want to do it.

:

00:47:25,331 --> 00:47:33,511

So I will still be doing some in person

stuff and around, around the country to do

:

00:47:33,511 --> 00:47:35,341

things and maybe other countries as well.

:

00:47:35,411 --> 00:47:41,356

But there's going to be a lot more A

lot more Selwyn Sparkle as we call it.

:

00:47:41,776 --> 00:47:44,586

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Need

more, we need more Salwyn Sparkle.

:

00:47:45,832 --> 00:47:47,442

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: 1 needs more Selwyn.

:

00:47:47,792 --> 00:47:49,952

The Viper's like, I need more, you don't

:

00:47:49,996 --> 00:47:50,316

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah,

:

00:47:50,792 --> 00:47:50,962

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: Sparkle.

:

00:47:51,752 --> 00:47:52,022

You're

:

00:47:52,106 --> 00:47:54,776

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: we,

we, we love the, we love the Salwyn

:

00:47:54,776 --> 00:47:56,316

Sparkle, so any more we can get.

:

00:47:56,556 --> 00:47:58,336

All right, so that's interesting.

:

00:47:58,756 --> 00:48:00,256

So we could see a bit more then.

:

00:48:00,256 --> 00:48:00,316

Mm.

:

00:48:00,542 --> 00:48:03,842

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: yeah, we'll

be, that's kind of how Canine

:

00:48:03,842 --> 00:48:05,642

Hooper's world is evolving.

:

00:48:05,642 --> 00:48:10,846

In terms of me I'm back

to doing Facebook Lives.

:

00:48:11,675 --> 00:48:13,055

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Oh, okay.

:

00:48:13,116 --> 00:48:14,506

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: on a Tuesday.

:

00:48:14,546 --> 00:48:15,096

Now,

:

00:48:15,745 --> 00:48:16,045

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Oh,

:

00:48:16,136 --> 00:48:16,576

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: did this

:

00:48:16,755 --> 00:48:17,355

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: okay.

:

00:48:17,556 --> 00:48:20,836

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: back on Facebook and

do my Facebook lives, and then I was on

:

00:48:20,846 --> 00:48:22,396

holiday for a week and then I was ill.

:

00:48:22,736 --> 00:48:23,066

So I

:

00:48:23,215 --> 00:48:23,455

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Oh,

:

00:48:23,866 --> 00:48:27,796

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: weeks, which was

rubbish, but I've just done one today

:

00:48:27,796 --> 00:48:30,326

before we started recording, and

:

00:48:30,555 --> 00:48:31,365

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: okay.

:

00:48:31,416 --> 00:48:34,256

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: an exciting

one, because Viper has just

:

00:48:34,256 --> 00:48:36,176

got her first sponsorship.

:

00:48:37,945 --> 00:48:38,815

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Oh, fancy.

:

00:48:38,815 --> 00:48:38,875

Of

:

00:48:38,996 --> 00:48:39,566

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: to say who?

:

00:48:40,005 --> 00:48:41,265

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

course you can.

:

00:48:42,545 --> 00:48:43,145

Yeah.

:

00:48:43,516 --> 00:48:49,276

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: big shout out to Good

Chaps, who are now our treat sponsors.

:

00:48:50,515 --> 00:48:50,815

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Oh

:

00:48:51,376 --> 00:48:54,416

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: all those

training treats we get through,

:

00:48:54,625 --> 00:48:55,165

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: yeah.

:

00:48:56,176 --> 00:48:57,306

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: we are now sponsored.

:

00:48:57,776 --> 00:49:01,886

But, they are doing A trainer's box.

:

00:49:01,886 --> 00:49:07,436

So they do small, like small packets

that you can sell onto your clients,

:

00:49:07,645 --> 00:49:08,035

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm,

:

00:49:08,036 --> 00:49:10,856

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: they're also

doing it so trainers can bulk by.

:

00:49:11,306 --> 00:49:15,926

So when you are using treats for

yourself in consults or in group classes,

:

00:49:16,190 --> 00:49:16,400

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm.

:

00:49:16,516 --> 00:49:21,671

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: can bulk by the treats

and no artificial colors, no additives.

:

00:49:23,276 --> 00:49:28,996

No nasties and the they've got a few

different types, but the ones I'm

:

00:49:28,996 --> 00:49:31,716

most excited about are single protein.

:

00:49:32,476 --> 00:49:38,776

So if you've got dogs that are maybe a bit

fussy, but also maybe have food allergies,

:

00:49:38,940 --> 00:49:39,390

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Hmm.

:

00:49:39,836 --> 00:49:41,346

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: they're

literally single protein.

:

00:49:41,386 --> 00:49:41,806

So they've

:

00:49:42,010 --> 00:49:42,950

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Oh, okay.

:

00:49:43,351 --> 00:49:46,041

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: Buck,

venison, salmon and chicken

:

00:49:46,280 --> 00:49:47,060

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Hmm.

:

00:49:47,281 --> 00:49:52,441

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: sausage and

you can order a big two box of

:

00:49:52,570 --> 00:49:53,080

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

:

00:49:53,141 --> 00:49:56,581

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: value treats

at a discounted rate for trainers.

:

00:49:56,591 --> 00:49:57,081

So

:

00:49:57,180 --> 00:49:57,700

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Okay.

:

00:49:57,901 --> 00:50:01,291

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: anyone is interested

in that go on to the Good Chaps page.

:

00:50:01,370 --> 00:50:03,670

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

never heard of them, but I'm

:

00:50:03,680 --> 00:50:05,060

glad you've mentioned them.

:

00:50:05,286 --> 00:50:05,736

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: Right.

:

00:50:05,766 --> 00:50:07,386

They're based in Bristol

:

00:50:07,660 --> 00:50:08,120

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Oh, nice.

:

00:50:08,696 --> 00:50:10,616

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: the

ingredients are all British.

:

00:50:10,876 --> 00:50:17,276

The packaging is eco friendly and they do

a range of eco friendly tug toys as well.

:

00:50:17,296 --> 00:50:19,586

So we're kind of supporting.

:

00:50:20,806 --> 00:50:23,376

the local economies,

:

00:50:23,610 --> 00:50:24,070

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah,

:

00:50:24,356 --> 00:50:27,386

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: supporting British

farmers, which is very important

:

00:50:27,680 --> 00:50:28,160

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yes.

:

00:50:28,456 --> 00:50:31,906

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: giving our dogs

really good high value treats rather

:

00:50:31,946 --> 00:50:38,161

than being in a panic having to get

hot dogs or treats that are full of

:

00:50:38,620 --> 00:50:39,130

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Crap.

:

00:50:39,351 --> 00:50:41,661

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: Let's face it,

you probably shouldn't be eating them.

:

00:50:41,810 --> 00:50:42,430

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah,

:

00:50:42,551 --> 00:50:46,921

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: can give our dogs

really good quality reinforcement.

:

00:50:46,961 --> 00:50:50,381

And as we know, the more reinforcing

the reward is, the more likely the

:

00:50:50,381 --> 00:50:51,621

dog is to repeat the behaviour.

:

00:50:51,631 --> 00:50:52,361

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

that's it.

:

00:50:52,542 --> 00:50:54,162

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: just going

to improve your training.

:

00:50:54,531 --> 00:50:54,991

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Amazing.

:

00:50:55,041 --> 00:50:57,001

I love that she's got

her first sponsorship.

:

00:50:57,021 --> 00:50:58,311

Congratulations.

:

00:50:59,211 --> 00:50:59,631

Right,

:

00:51:00,707 --> 00:51:01,047

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: Can I just,

:

00:51:01,071 --> 00:51:01,381

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: go on.

:

00:51:01,527 --> 00:51:02,897

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: do,

can I do another quick

:

00:51:03,081 --> 00:51:05,181

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: You

can do, you can do whatever you want.

:

00:51:05,181 --> 00:51:06,521

Antinol.

:

00:51:06,521 --> 00:51:07,861

No,

:

00:51:08,367 --> 00:51:11,567

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: so now she's

a year old, I've just started

:

00:51:11,567 --> 00:51:13,217

her joint supplement stuff.

:

00:51:13,277 --> 00:51:16,317

And I know people are probably

thinking, a year old and you're

:

00:51:16,317 --> 00:51:17,627

putting her on joint supplement,

:

00:51:18,321 --> 00:51:18,971

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

definitely.

:

00:51:18,981 --> 00:51:19,641

Why not?

:

00:51:19,947 --> 00:51:20,387

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: right?

:

00:51:20,417 --> 00:51:24,927

Once the dogs are a year old, and

I've done this with all of my dogs,

:

00:51:25,261 --> 00:51:26,051

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

:

00:51:26,287 --> 00:51:26,707

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: supplement.

:

00:51:26,747 --> 00:51:32,507

But having a breed of dog that does

a lot, she's very active, very wacky.

:

00:51:32,517 --> 00:51:33,147

She does.

:

00:51:33,642 --> 00:51:35,662

Lots and lots of stupid shit.

:

00:51:36,142 --> 00:51:38,302

I want to know her joints are

:

00:51:38,711 --> 00:51:40,041

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Well, it's actually still

:

00:51:40,051 --> 00:51:41,361

growing as well, isn't she?

:

00:51:41,361 --> 00:51:41,451

So.

:

00:51:42,482 --> 00:51:44,792

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: she's still growing

and developing and this is why we

:

00:51:44,792 --> 00:51:46,452

didn't start till she was a year old.

:

00:51:46,482 --> 00:51:50,702

But now, kind of, the development

stage is slowing and she's

:

00:51:50,751 --> 00:51:50,961

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm,

:

00:51:51,172 --> 00:51:52,302

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: do more stuff.

:

00:51:52,452 --> 00:51:52,642

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm,

:

00:51:52,723 --> 00:51:55,813

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: if you go onto

the Antenna website and use the

:

00:51:55,823 --> 00:52:01,063

code CHW sent me, all uppercase,

:

00:52:01,512 --> 00:52:01,652

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm.

:

00:52:01,843 --> 00:52:05,023

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: so K9 Hoopers

World sent me, but CHW sent me,

:

00:52:05,323 --> 00:52:10,603

you'll get an extra discount on top

of the discount you when you sign up.

:

00:52:11,152 --> 00:52:12,062

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Oh, okay.

:

00:52:12,222 --> 00:52:12,772

Brilliant.

:

00:52:12,873 --> 00:52:14,443

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: that one

comes with a discount code.

:

00:52:16,412 --> 00:52:17,862

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

That'll be in our show notes.

:

00:52:17,872 --> 00:52:18,322

Brilliant.

:

00:52:18,542 --> 00:52:22,152

Right, any more reveals before

we move on to our last question?

:

00:52:22,152 --> 00:52:22,372

Or

:

00:52:22,653 --> 00:52:22,833

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: I,

:

00:52:23,042 --> 00:52:23,312

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

anything else?

:

00:52:23,373 --> 00:52:26,633

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: so the main,

so World have been in partnership

:

00:52:26,643 --> 00:52:28,473

with Antonelle for a long time.

:

00:52:28,762 --> 00:52:29,362

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Love it.

:

00:52:29,773 --> 00:52:32,773

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: also we, we

fully support the muzzle movement.

:

00:52:32,813 --> 00:52:33,863

Have you had the muzzle movement

:

00:52:34,152 --> 00:52:35,612

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

We've had them on, we've had

:

00:52:35,642 --> 00:52:36,912

Clara and The Muzzle moving on.

:

00:52:37,513 --> 00:52:38,473

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: thought you had.

:

00:52:38,513 --> 00:52:41,173

I'm, because I've been away

in Ila, I'm behind on episodes

:

00:52:41,202 --> 00:52:42,932

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

No, no, it's all right.

:

00:52:43,073 --> 00:52:43,553

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: Clara had

:

00:52:43,702 --> 00:52:45,272

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Yeah, she's amazing.

:

00:52:45,282 --> 00:52:46,182

Well, they're amazing.

:

00:52:46,963 --> 00:52:51,333

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: So, Dodge always

had a muzzle movement muzzle because he

:

00:52:51,603 --> 00:52:54,883

couldn't leave the house without a muzzle

because, you know, health and safety.

:

00:52:55,672 --> 00:52:56,362

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: yeah.

:

00:52:56,718 --> 00:52:58,668

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: is being

trained how to wear a muzzle

:

00:52:59,092 --> 00:53:00,062

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Right.

:

00:53:00,148 --> 00:53:04,758

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: her muzzle movement

muzzle that comes in very pretty colors

:

00:53:05,072 --> 00:53:06,112

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Oh,

:

00:53:06,158 --> 00:53:08,098

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: video of

that on our socials as well so.

:

00:53:08,452 --> 00:53:09,332

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: amazing.

:

00:53:09,382 --> 00:53:11,462

Yeah, love the work the

Muzzle Movement are doing.

:

00:53:11,462 --> 00:53:13,712

But yeah, they were, they were

literally one of my first,

:

00:53:13,722 --> 00:53:15,527

well, first guests on, so.

:

00:53:15,788 --> 00:53:16,708

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: what they're doing is

:

00:53:16,867 --> 00:53:17,207

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: It's,

:

00:53:17,308 --> 00:53:17,558

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: and

:

00:53:17,907 --> 00:53:18,557

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: it is.

:

00:53:18,558 --> 00:53:22,108

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: can't support them

enough so we're sending them big big love.

:

00:53:22,407 --> 00:53:23,067

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: love it.

:

00:53:23,257 --> 00:53:27,897

So, Kari, where can our listeners

find out more about you, Canine

:

00:53:27,897 --> 00:53:30,447

Hooper's World, and to get involved?

:

00:53:32,053 --> 00:53:37,433

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: if you are a

trainer and want to and find out about

:

00:53:37,483 --> 00:53:44,303

the instructor courses and stuff the

website, the new, the new evolved edition

:

00:53:44,303 --> 00:53:47,023

will be out in the next few weeks.

:

00:53:47,023 --> 00:53:49,563

I'm just kind of tweaking

before it goes live.

:

00:53:50,027 --> 00:53:50,447

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Excuse me.

:

00:53:50,653 --> 00:53:54,653

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: looking at the

end of March for the, the changeover.

:

00:53:55,673 --> 00:54:00,213

So, if you want to kind of look

at that stuff Eva, drop me an

:

00:54:00,223 --> 00:54:02,823

email, info at caninehoopersworld.

:

00:54:03,503 --> 00:54:05,633

website is allthews.

:

00:54:05,923 --> 00:54:06,203

caninehoopersworld.

:

00:54:06,203 --> 00:54:12,783

Instagram, now, there is a

caninehoopersworld Instagram,

:

00:54:12,783 --> 00:54:14,453

but I'm rubbish on it.

:

00:54:14,543 --> 00:54:16,303

I forget to post all the time.

:

00:54:18,123 --> 00:54:22,183

at doddshepard, because We've

still kept the boy's name on it.

:

00:54:22,493 --> 00:54:25,053

That's where you can see all the

cool stuff I'm doing with Viper

:

00:54:25,337 --> 00:54:26,427

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Oh, okay.

:

00:54:26,823 --> 00:54:29,913

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: TikTok is more Viper

and me playing Hoopers and other stuff.

:

00:54:30,883 --> 00:54:36,103

then we have Facebook page

group for the Hooper stuff.

:

00:54:36,133 --> 00:54:40,163

And if you want to kind of touch

base with me and find out more

:

00:54:40,163 --> 00:54:42,633

about the Carrie Anne sparkle and

:

00:54:45,093 --> 00:54:48,173

It's, it's more kind of me and

my personal Facebook page, but if

:

00:54:48,173 --> 00:54:53,413

people want to find out the sparkle

insanity levels that are my world,

:

00:54:53,473 --> 00:54:55,353

then they can find me on Facebook as

:

00:54:55,457 --> 00:54:57,057

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Is

that where your Facebook lives are?

:

00:54:57,117 --> 00:54:58,967

Are they on the canine hoopers?

:

00:54:58,967 --> 00:54:59,007

Right.

:

00:54:59,017 --> 00:54:59,307

Okay.

:

00:54:59,333 --> 00:54:59,893

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: Facebook lives

:

00:54:59,997 --> 00:55:01,527

The Carrie Anne Selwyn

:

00:55:02,401 --> 00:55:02,881

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: And

:

00:55:03,617 --> 00:55:06,107

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: I'm the only

Carrie Anne Selwyn on the whole of

:

00:55:06,331 --> 00:55:09,251

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: I heard

this the other day on the, on the podcast.

:

00:55:09,271 --> 00:55:09,841

I heard you on.

:

00:55:09,841 --> 00:55:10,241

I was like, wow.

:

00:55:10,435 --> 00:55:12,463

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: it's all about the

:

00:55:12,751 --> 00:55:14,271

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

just quickly, are you going

:

00:55:14,271 --> 00:55:15,461

to mention your podcast?

:

00:55:15,471 --> 00:55:18,491

It's on a break, but you've got

a podcast and tons of episodes.

:

00:55:18,491 --> 00:55:22,994

I listened to it for the first time

the other day with Joe pay Joe pay Joe.

:

00:55:22,994 --> 00:55:23,521

Yeah.

:

00:55:23,527 --> 00:55:25,257

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: Oh,

oh, Joe's been on it.

:

00:55:25,297 --> 00:55:27,347

I've there's like 200 episodes.

:

00:55:27,381 --> 00:55:28,251

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

:

00:55:28,661 --> 00:55:32,311

So let's shout out to that if people

want to go back and have a listen.

:

00:55:32,537 --> 00:55:35,097

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: yeah, if, if you

like what you're hearing, then yeah,

:

00:55:35,097 --> 00:55:37,217

there is a Canine Hoop as well podcast.

:

00:55:37,227 --> 00:55:39,707

You can get it wherever

you're listening to this.

:

00:55:39,807 --> 00:55:43,897

I'm assuming we're on Apple

and Spotify and Google and.

:

00:55:44,632 --> 00:55:45,802

those good places.

:

00:55:46,472 --> 00:55:48,452

But it started:

:

00:55:50,552 --> 00:55:50,942

I think the

:

00:55:51,221 --> 00:55:51,971

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Wow.

:

00:55:51,971 --> 00:55:55,211

Right.

:

00:55:55,242 --> 00:55:59,442

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: favorite episode

was the one with Sharon Nelson.

:

00:55:59,792 --> 00:56:01,462

That was episode 100.

:

00:56:01,892 --> 00:56:08,062

That episode will always have such a

Very special place in my heart now.

:

00:56:08,492 --> 00:56:10,302

But advance warning.

:

00:56:10,782 --> 00:56:15,502

If you go to the very beginning

and start from episode one, I think

:

00:56:15,502 --> 00:56:16,842

it's about eight minutes long.

:

00:56:17,701 --> 00:56:18,421

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Okay.

:

00:56:18,842 --> 00:56:24,897

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: By the time you get to

season three, It's about two hours long.

:

00:56:27,411 --> 00:56:27,701

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Okay.

:

00:56:28,227 --> 00:56:30,807

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: I think the

longest episode was something like

:

00:56:30,807 --> 00:56:36,927

two hours forty five minutes and it's

either Claire Brown or Tom Candy.

:

00:56:37,201 --> 00:56:37,941

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Oh, okay.

:

00:56:37,941 --> 00:56:38,261

Yeah.

:

00:56:38,261 --> 00:56:41,611

Yeah.

:

00:56:41,647 --> 00:56:42,437

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: of

the longest episodes.

:

00:56:42,907 --> 00:56:45,617

So, had some amazing guests on.

:

00:56:45,667 --> 00:56:47,607

I mean I've just mentioned three of them.

:

00:56:49,217 --> 00:56:53,057

From all different walks of

life, all different places.

:

00:56:53,157 --> 00:56:57,317

Trainers I've trained with personally,

trainers from, pardon me, trainers from

:

00:56:57,317 --> 00:57:00,587

around the yeah, it's a cool podcast.

:

00:57:00,587 --> 00:57:05,057

So if you want to kind of, I think

the best way to explain it is if

:

00:57:05,057 --> 00:57:08,757

you were a fly on the wall in a

pub listening to dog trainers.

:

00:57:09,677 --> 00:57:11,857

That's that's kind of

the vibe of the podcast.

:

00:57:12,021 --> 00:57:12,901

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

I like that.

:

00:57:13,187 --> 00:57:13,817

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: with children.

:

00:57:13,827 --> 00:57:15,077

There will be swearing

:

00:57:15,741 --> 00:57:16,041

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Right.

:

00:57:16,081 --> 00:57:17,981

Well, I only found it the

other day and I listened.

:

00:57:18,371 --> 00:57:20,221

I've listened to one,

but it's on my list now.

:

00:57:20,611 --> 00:57:21,321

Right.

:

00:57:21,727 --> 00:57:22,607

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: it the other day.

:

00:57:22,627 --> 00:57:22,857

Where have

:

00:57:23,001 --> 00:57:23,021

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

:

00:57:23,167 --> 00:57:24,037

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: you been?

:

00:57:24,126 --> 00:57:26,546

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: I don't,

well, I didn't, I didn't used to listen

:

00:57:26,546 --> 00:57:29,096

to podcasts until I set up this one.

:

00:57:29,616 --> 00:57:32,466

So I thought I need to do my

homework and my research because

:

00:57:32,466 --> 00:57:34,246

I've never been a guest on one.

:

00:57:34,246 --> 00:57:36,656

And I was due to go on to

Carly Edwards one last year

:

00:57:36,656 --> 00:57:38,186

and we've had to rearrange it.

:

00:57:38,216 --> 00:57:40,006

But I thought, well, I'm

going to listen to it.

:

00:57:40,086 --> 00:57:40,876

But now I love them.

:

00:57:40,876 --> 00:57:41,806

And I listened to like.

:

00:57:42,151 --> 00:57:46,581

Non dog ones and then I found I knew yours

was there, but I got it on my list This

:

00:57:46,611 --> 00:57:49,961

is what i'm saying and I list I think I

listened to the last one with joey So is

:

00:57:49,961 --> 00:57:51,671

it coming back or you're not sure yet?

:

00:57:52,107 --> 00:57:56,022

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: I am planning on

it coming back but Full disclosure

:

00:57:56,022 --> 00:57:59,087

with the malinois and everything

:

00:57:59,241 --> 00:57:59,721

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

It's full on.

:

00:58:00,317 --> 00:58:03,897

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: i'm taking

a break but I'm, not saying

:

00:58:03,897 --> 00:58:05,427

it's never going to be back.

:

00:58:05,447 --> 00:58:11,027

But at the moment we're we're on a

little holiday, but I always did breaks.

:

00:58:11,027 --> 00:58:15,237

I used to do between 25 and

50 episodes before a break.

:

00:58:15,297 --> 00:58:18,987

And there was either four or five

seasons, something like that.

:

00:58:19,081 --> 00:58:19,721

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah

:

00:58:20,167 --> 00:58:22,297

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: there's a

few episodes to catch up on.

:

00:58:22,297 --> 00:58:23,957

Excellent.

:

00:58:24,001 --> 00:58:26,681

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

:

00:58:26,681 --> 00:58:32,591

00:58:42,676 --> 00:58:46,446

Thanks for coming on.

:

00:58:49,877 --> 00:58:52,237

Carrie-Anne Selwyn: Thank you so

much for having me as a guest.

:

00:58:52,257 --> 00:58:52,717

Take care.

:

00:58:52,757 --> 00:58:53,027

Bye.

:

00:58:53,526 --> 00:58:54,246

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Thank you.

:

00:58:58,246 --> 00:59:01,836

What a brilliant conversation

with Carrie Ann Selwyn.

:

00:59:02,176 --> 00:59:05,146

Here are some key takeaways

from today's episode.

:

00:59:05,626 --> 00:59:10,456

Number one, hoopers is a low impact

inclusive sport for all dogs.

:

00:59:10,636 --> 00:59:15,526

It's great for puppies, seniors, and

sensitive dogs who need structured

:

00:59:15,526 --> 00:59:17,266

but low pressure activities.

:

00:59:17,966 --> 00:59:21,956

Number two, it strengthens the bond

between dog and their guardian.

:

00:59:22,496 --> 00:59:26,366

Hoopers focuses on teamwork,

trust, and clear communication

:

00:59:26,606 --> 00:59:28,916

rather than speed or competition.

:

00:59:29,366 --> 00:59:32,696

Number three, it's more

than just physical exercise.

:

00:59:32,726 --> 00:59:34,916

It's great for mental stimulation.

:

00:59:35,306 --> 00:59:37,346

The sport helps build confidence.

:

00:59:37,436 --> 00:59:41,456

Calm, focus and problem
