In this episode of Need to Know, Dr. Nsenga Burton unpacks the controversial “Big, Beautiful Bill” introduced by Republican lawmakers. This proposal could add a staggering $3.3 trillion to the national debt. While billionaires stand to benefit from extended tax breaks, everyday Americans face deep cuts to Medicaid and essential social programs. Dr. Burton calls on viewers to dig deeper—read the bill, understand what’s at stake, and demand accountability from elected officials. She also exposes the wave of misinformation surrounding the legislation and urges everyone to stay vigilant, informed, and engaged in the political process.

2

:

Now presents need to know with

the award-winning hyphenated Dr.

3

:

Nsenga Burton.

4

:

Dr.

5

:

Burton, what do we need to know?

6

:

Dr. Nsenga Burton:

7

:

Good afternoon and welcome

to Need To Know with Dr.

8

:

Nsenga Burton.

9

:

I am she.

10

:

And today we are talking about.

11

:

40 sevens.

12

:

Big, beautiful, ugly.

13

:

Bill.

14

:

Uh, as you know, there has been a

lot of discussion about this bill.

15

:

Um, the bill is controversial for lots

of reasons, and even republicans who

16

:

usually are in lock step with one another.

17

:

Are fighting about this bill.

18

:

One of the reasons why is

because it's going to add 3.3

19

:

trillion to our national debt,

and 47 promised not to do that.

20

:

Uh, it's also going to cut, um,

Medicaid, um, benefits for all

21

:

types of people, including veterans.

22

:

Um, and, uh.

23

:

Food assistance and all the things

that happen, which is already

24

:

less than 1% of the budget.

25

:

Uh, but for some reason we have

to cut that and put billions of

26

:

dollars into the military, no money

for infrastructure, all the things.

27

:

So there's just lots and lots of problems.

28

:

Um, and then the tax cuts.

29

:

Of course, he wants to extend the 2017

tax cuts that were for billionaires,

30

:

um, and to continue those, which means

that they will pay less in taxes.

31

:

And then, as was the case the last time,

which is why, I don't know why y'all

32

:

voted for this dude again, but as was the

case the last time, uh, would mean that

33

:

the middle class and the working poor

and the lower middle class would suffer.

34

:

IE we would pay more in taxes.

35

:

So, you know, for example.

36

:

Um, 40, 47 when he was 45, I think he

paid what, less than a thousand dollars

37

:

in taxes, even though he's a billionaire.

38

:

So what you need to know is

you need to read the bill.

39

:

One of the things about the

bill is that it is long.

40

:

So what they have done or what the, the

GOP um, has tried to do and effectively

41

:

has done previously is they make edits to

it and then push it through at midnight,

42

:

1:00 AM when most people are asleep.

43

:

So the next morning when you get up

and they're referring to the big,

44

:

beautiful bill or whatever you think

they're talking about, what they

45

:

were talking about the day before

when they made changes overnight.

46

:

So you need to stay up to date

on the big beautiful bill.

47

:

Um, and I say that with so much sarcasm,

I hope it's dripping into your screen.

48

:

Um, but, uh, you need to

know what's in the bill.

49

:

You need to see what's being

sneaked into the bill, what's

50

:

being cut out of the bill.

51

:

Uh, even his, uh, former, uh.

52

:

Collaborator.

53

:

I think that's a kind word.

54

:

I'm trying to be kind today.

55

:

Uh, Elon Musk, uh, is against this

bill, uh, because of what it will do

56

:

to the debt and some of the, what he

calls unnecessary cuts that will have

57

:

devastating effects on Americans.

58

:

So, um, think for yourself.

59

:

I have been watching, uh, YouTube

tv and they have been running ads

60

:

from some group that is saying

that this is all Joe Biden's fault.

61

:

Now, Joe Biden hasn't been

in office for a while, right?

62

:

It's all Joe Biden's fault, and we

need to pass this big, beautiful

63

:

bill to fix all the bad things

that he did when he was in office.

64

:

That would be Joe Biden.

65

:

So if you've been following any

politics, if you've been following

66

:

this big, beautiful bill, you know

that's absolutely not the case.

67

:

The big, beautiful bill is really about,

uh, devastating certain communities.

68

:

Uh, it's about enriching certain

individuals who are already rich.

69

:

And it's about, um, bringing a

large part of America to its knees

70

:

for having the audacity to say

that this is not what we want.

71

:

Um, we don't want this.

72

:

So I'm not telling you how to vote.

73

:

I'm not telling you what to do.

74

:

I am telling you to read the

bill and to share your concerns

75

:

with your Congress people.

76

:

And I also want to remind you that

your Congress people work for you.

77

:

They don't work for the the president.

78

:

The Supreme Court does not

work for the president.

79

:

I know we're not saying that, but

they don't work for the president.

80

:

These are elected officials.

81

:

They work for you.

82

:

So if you have something to say about

it, if you want them to vote a certain

83

:

way, if you don't want them to vote a

certain way, you need to let them know.

84

:

You need to let them know if they do pass

this bill and it's gonna be negatively

85

:

and it's going to negatively affect you,

then they will not have your support

86

:

in the next election, in the midterms.

87

:

So that's all I got.

88

:

So what you need to know is read the bill.

89

:

Contact your Congress people.

90

:

If you, uh, are in support

of or against the bill, know

91

:

what's in it and let them know.

92

:

Remind them that they work for

you, not the other way around.

93

:

Alright, tune in next week to

A Black Executive Perspective

94

:

podcast, the award-winning podcast.

95

:

With Tony Franklin and Chris, um,

an tune in next week so you can

96

:

hear me tell you what you need to

know, although I think you probably

97

:

already know what you need to know.

98

:

You just need me to remind you.

99

:

Have a great day.

100

:

Bye.
