FAQ's
How can I tell if my "podcast why" is evolving?
Signals that your podcast "why" is evolving include low-grade resistance before recording, restlessness with your topic, or envying other shows that resonate more with you, as described by Brett Johnson at 02:10. These subtle feelings often indicate your motivation is changing and that it's time to reassess your purpose.
What steps should I take when my podcast's purpose starts to shift?
When your podcast purpose starts to shift, Brett Johnson recommends honestly reviewing your original why statement, identifying what still feels true or stale, and revising it rather than starting from scratch (03:32). Then, use your updated "podcast why" to review upcoming episodes and adjust your content or framing if needed to ensure alignment.
Why is it important to revisit and update my "podcast why" over time?
Revisit and update your podcast "why" because it's a living thing that grows with you, ensuring ongoing relevance and clarity (04:11). Brett Johnson explains that honoring this evolution prevents burnout and keeps both you and your listeners engaged for the long run.

I research with AI. I draft the first draft with it. This episode is its own example. AI gathered the platform coverage and produced the drafts. I set the argument, directed the corrections through several rounds. I rewrote the piece until I said what I think, in the way I say it. When any scanner reads the transcript, it will find the machine’s fingerprints on the sentences and mine on the personal experiences. Both readings are accurate. Consider this the blackline for the document you have just read and podcast episode you have just heard.
Podcasting is a MARATHON, not a sprint. Be patient, take action, and apply yourself.

When your podcast why evolves.
Brett Johnson:Welcome back to The Podcast Why. I'm Brett Johnson, My Podcast Guy, your
Brett Johnson:trusted friend in podcasting. This show is here to help you reconnect with the real
Brett Johnson:why behind your podcast so you can keep showing up with clarity
Brett Johnson:and confidence. This is Episode one of Season five
Brett Johnson:of The Podcast Why. We're titling it Sustaining your why over the
Brett Johnson:Long game. It's built for the podcaster who's been at it a while and needs
Brett Johnson:to stay in it. It covers the evolution of the why, the
Brett Johnson:comparison trap, natural podcasting seasons, guest
Brett Johnson:strategy, using listener feedback as a strategic mirror,
Brett Johnson:navigating life interruptions, and closing with the recommitment
Brett Johnson:review framework. This episode, Episode one We're going to
Brett Johnson:kick it off with the evolution of the Podcast
Brett Johnson:why When we talk about your podcast why the core reason
Brett Johnson:you're doing this work, episode after episode, season after
Brett Johnson:season, it's easy to treat it like something you find
Brett Johnson:once and carry forever. A plaque on the wall, a mission
Brett Johnson:statement you Write in year one and never revisit. But here's
Brett Johnson:what 10 years of working with long term podcasters has shown me that podcast
Brett Johnson:why Evolves and the podcasters who struggle most are often the
Brett Johnson:ones who either don't notice it's changing or or feel guilty
Brett Johnson:when it does. I've worked with podcasters who started their show with
Brett Johnson:a burning desire to share their story, and three years in they realized
Brett Johnson:the story had been told and what they really wanted was to help others
Brett Johnson:tell theirs. I worked with others who launched to grow an
Brett Johnson:audience and discovered their real why was much quieter. They wanted to think
Brett Johnson:out loud, work through ideas, and connect with a small, specific group of
Brett Johnson:people who were doing the same work. Neither of those
Brett Johnson:shifts is a failure, but both of them are growth.
Brett Johnson:The question isn't whether your podcast why will change, it's whether
Brett Johnson:you're paying attention when it does. So what
Brett Johnson:does an evolving why actually look like from the inside? Because
Brett Johnson:it rarely announces itself clearly. It usually shows
Brett Johnson:up as something subtler. It might feel like low grade resistance
Brett Johnson:before recording. Not full blown burnout, but a kind of a drag
Brett Johnson:that wasn't there before. It might show up as restlessness with
Brett Johnson:your topic, a sense that you've said what you needed to say about this and
Brett Johnson:you're not sure what's next. It might appear as envy of other
Brett Johnson:podcasters who seem to be doing something that resonates with you more
Brett Johnson:than your own show currently does. I've worked with
Brett Johnson:podcasters who mistook all of these signals for laziness or lack of
Brett Johnson:discipline. What they were actually experiencing was their podcast y
Brett Johnson:trying to update itself. The fix isn't to push through and
Brett Johnson:ignore it. The fix is to sit with it. To ask honestly,
Brett Johnson:what do I actually want this show to be doing for me and my
Brett Johnson:audience right now? Not what you wanted it to do two years
Brett Johnson:ago. Not what you told people in your first episode. Right
Brett Johnson:now, your podcast why is allowed to grow. In fact,
Brett Johnson:if you've been podcasting seriously for more than a year and your why hasn't
Brett Johnson:shifted at least a little, that might be worth examining too.
Brett Johnson:Here's the practical piece. When you recognize your podcast why is evolving
Brett Johnson:the worst thing you can do is either ignore it or blow everything up in
Brett Johnson:response. Instead, treat it like what it is. An
Brett Johnson:update, not a replacement. Sit down with your original why statement.
Brett Johnson:Read it honestly. Ask yourself which parts still feel true,
Brett Johnson:which parts feel stale, and what's missing. Then rewrite it.
Brett Johnson:Not from scratch but as a revision. You're not abandoning where you started,
Brett Johnson:you're honoring how far you've come. Once you have an updated
Brett Johnson:why. Look at your upcoming episodes through that new lens.
Brett Johnson:Do they still make sense? Do some need to shift slightly in angle
Brett Johnson:or framing? The show itself may not need to change much at
Brett Johnson:all, but the clarity you bring to it will be sharper and listeners
Brett Johnson:will feel it. Your why is a living thing. Give it room to
Brett Johnson:breathe, room to grow, and the regular attention it deserves.
Brett Johnson:That's how you stay in this for the long game. You can book a Clarity
