Shownotes

When it comes to Tax Prep versus Tax Planning? Hands down, planning is king!

Host Josh Bretl, founder of FSR Wealth, is showing us the difference between putting together the info we need to file our taxes (always a short-term nuisance!) and positioning ourselves to minimize what we actually owe when April 15th rolls around (a long-term proposition).

As you’ll learn on this episode of Retirement Equals Freedom, whatever stage of life you’re in – from raising young kids to enjoying those golden years – there are important tax implications. It’s about creating a proactive (and tax efficient!) strategy for investing, drawing down and managing your assets all along the way.

Find out how IRAs, 529s, HSAs, RMDs, 401ks – the whole alphabet soup – are part of a holistic, tax-savvy vision for your abundant future!

The show wraps with a quick-fire round of – you asked for it! – “Get to know Josh and Dave” (with apologies to Dave’s mother and Bambi) as well as a DR2R that is more deep dish (pizza) than deep thoughts.

Speaking of deep thoughts, some of the subject matter we tackle can get pretty complex. If you’re wondering whether now is the time to consider hiring a professional, don’t miss our next episode! Josh will be running down the list of things to look for in a qualified financial planner.

Transcripts

Josh Bretl:

Tax planning is a proactive approach to managing

Josh Bretl:

taxes or the tax liability.

Josh Bretl:

Instead of just waiting for tax season, you're taking

Josh Bretl:

the bull by the horns.

Josh Bretl:

It allows you to take steps throughout the year

Josh Bretl:

to minimize your taxes that you know are coming.

Josh Bretl:

And it may not be just for this year, but it could be

Josh Bretl:

for the rest of your life.

Josh Bretl:

And especially for retirees, now is a great time to do that.

Josh Bretl:

Tax preparation is all you're doing is taking whatever

Josh Bretl:

you did in the prior year and reporting it to the IRS.

Dave Schmidt:

When it comes to tax prep versus tax

Dave Schmidt:

planning, who will win?

Dave Schmidt:

Ah, simple hands down tax planning.

Dave Schmidt:

Your host Josh, is showing us a difference in collecting

Dave Schmidt:

all the information we need to file our taxes every year,

Dave Schmidt:

which is a short term nuisance, and positioning ourselves

Dave Schmidt:

to minimize what we actually owe come April 15th, which

Dave Schmidt:

is a long-term proposition.

Dave Schmidt:

As we've mentioned hundreds of times in this show, it

Dave Schmidt:

comes down to you creating a proactive strategy.

Dave Schmidt:

Specifically in this episode, we're talking about a

Dave Schmidt:

strategy around investing, drawing down, and managing

Dave Schmidt:

all of those assets.

Dave Schmidt:

Find out how IRAs, and 529s, and HSAs, and 401ks, and

Dave Schmidt:

the entire alphabet soup, are part of a holistic tax

Dave Schmidt:

savvy vision of your future.

Dave Schmidt:

We go pretty deep in this episode, and sometimes

Dave Schmidt:

things get a little complex, but don't worry.

Dave Schmidt:

As always, we end on a light and fluffy note.

Dave Schmidt:

This time you'll hear all about how my, uh, pizza

Dave Schmidt:

ordering skills can come in real handy at your next party.

Dave Schmidt:

This is The Retirement Equals Freedom Podcast.

Dave Schmidt:

Your host, Josh Bretl, is the owner of FSR Wealth Strategies.

Dave Schmidt:

And Josh for the last 20 plus years, has been helping

Dave Schmidt:

fine folks like you, gain the confidence to make retirement

Dave Schmidt:

the best part of your life.

Dave Schmidt:

And me.

Dave Schmidt:

Who the heck am I?

Dave Schmidt:

Ah, thanks for asking.

Dave Schmidt:

I'm Dave.

Dave Schmidt:

Josh's longtime friend, co-host of the show, and a huge fan

Dave Schmidt:

of the new Macadamia Nut Cream Cold Brew at Starbucks.

Dave Schmidt:

Oh man, it's delicious.

Dave Schmidt:

All right.

Dave Schmidt:

All right.

Dave Schmidt:

Yeah, I've been talking long enough.

Dave Schmidt:

I get it.

Dave Schmidt:

So now let me let you let me, end this introduction

Dave Schmidt:

so we can talk about tax prep versus tax planning.

Dave Schmidt:

Rolling with the coffee.

Dave Schmidt:

When is the new Smartless...

Dave Schmidt:

not live, but-

Josh Bretl:

The-

Dave Schmidt:

Documentary.

Josh Bretl:

The documentary?

Dave Schmidt:

Yeah.

Josh Bretl:

I think it's coming out soon.

Dave Schmidt:

It's getting released May 23rd.

Dave Schmidt:

It's the same day they're announcing it it's no longer

Dave Schmidt:

HBO Max, it's just Max.

Dave Schmidt:

And that's their first headlining show.

Josh Bretl:

Well, that's kind of cool.

Dave Schmidt:

Yeah, I'm pumped.

Josh Bretl:

Missy and I have gotten into

Josh Bretl:

documentaries recently.

Josh Bretl:

We don't watch much TV or anything really.

Dave Schmidt:

Yeah, right.

Josh Bretl:

And you make fun of us.

Dave Schmidt:

Cooking shows.

Josh Bretl:

We've watched cooking shows, a lot of them.

Josh Bretl:

Competition cooking shows.

Josh Bretl:

But documentaries are something we've gotten into.

Josh Bretl:

We've watched some fun ones.

Josh Bretl:

And I'm not an artsy person, as you know.

Josh Bretl:

You were the artsy one in our relationship.

Dave Schmidt:

Rumor has it.

Josh Bretl:

But we've enjoyed...

Josh Bretl:

So we've watched Britney Spears, and we've

Josh Bretl:

watched the Billy Eilish documentary's outstanding.

Josh Bretl:

But the Lady Gaga documentary is out-of-this-world good.

Dave Schmidt:

Why?

Dave Schmidt:

What sets that apart?

Josh Bretl:

I feel like it really gets into her

Josh Bretl:

life in a very authentic way because I think she

Josh Bretl:

has such an amazing voice.

Josh Bretl:

Unlike you and I, who sound like we're dragging our

Josh Bretl:

vocal cords through gravel-

Dave Schmidt:

this is where I say, "Speak for

Dave Schmidt:

yourself," but carry on.

Josh Bretl:

But her voice is so incredible, but I feel

Josh Bretl:

like she does such weird, awkward things at awards shows,

Josh Bretl:

that meat dress and stuff.

Josh Bretl:

But it really puts her in perspective.

Josh Bretl:

It really opens you up into seeing her point of

Josh Bretl:

view and her everything.

Josh Bretl:

I really enjoyed it.

Josh Bretl:

In fact, Missy and I have said that one of the things

Josh Bretl:

on our bucket list is to see a live concert of hers.

Josh Bretl:

We've yet to do it.

Dave Schmidt:

She's a gem.

Dave Schmidt:

I've always loved the Gags.

Dave Schmidt:

Did you learn her real name?

Josh Bretl:

I'm sure I did, but I don't remember it.

Josh Bretl:

What's her real name?

Dave Schmidt:

I don't know.

Dave Schmidt:

I was asking you.

Dave Schmidt:

But yeah, you guys are watching documentaries while

Dave Schmidt:

sipping on wine and having some cheese snacks and stuff.

Dave Schmidt:

Carla and I watch documentaries, I'm having a

Dave Schmidt:

bowl of cereal and whatever.

Josh Bretl:

You had a big weekend.

Josh Bretl:

Your wife left you for the weekend.

Dave Schmidt:

Yeah, she likes to abandon us.

Dave Schmidt:

And...

Dave Schmidt:

Well, if you listen to any of our episodes,

Dave Schmidt:

you kind of get why.

Dave Schmidt:

I'm kind of annoying.

Dave Schmidt:

But yeah, she headed down to Lake Ozarks with some

Dave Schmidt:

buddies, and so it was boys weekend for Landon and I.

Josh Bretl:

You don't have that very often.

Dave Schmidt:

We don't, and it was awesome.

Dave Schmidt:

Now, you have three kids of your own, and I think you can

Dave Schmidt:

attest to this - parenting is just a lot simpler when

Dave Schmidt:

it's just dad and the kids.

Josh Bretl:

Oh, my wife and I talk about this all the time.

Josh Bretl:

You subtract one person from the equation, it doesn't

Josh Bretl:

matter which one person, her or I, or even one of

Josh Bretl:

the children, and all of a sudden you're like, "God, this

Josh Bretl:

You kind of had a miserable weather weekend.

Josh Bretl:

He's such an athlete, loves to be outside

Josh Bretl:

and do all that stuff.

Josh Bretl:

It was so miserable, you probably just wanted

Josh Bretl:

to hang out inside.

Dave Schmidt:

We found time.

Dave Schmidt:

As soon as it cleared up on Saturday, him and I went out and

Dave Schmidt:

shot basketball for 30 minutes.

Dave Schmidt:

He smoked me in Pig twice 'cause he's legit good.

Dave Schmidt:

He played baseball through the hail on Sunday.

Dave Schmidt:

It was hail, and it was sunny and rain and windy; then sunny.

Dave Schmidt:

And he was up to bat right when he started hailing.

Dave Schmidt:

And we all looked at the umpire, who was a high school kid.

Dave Schmidt:

We're like, "Don't you dare cancel this."

Dave Schmidt:

And Landon got a hit through the hail.

Dave Schmidt:

It was so impressive.

Dave Schmidt:

He was not phased at all.

Josh Bretl:

That's pretty cool.

Dave Schmidt:

It was cool.

Josh Bretl:

Saturday here rained from 10:30 through one o'clock.

Josh Bretl:

And it was a miserable, cold, 40 degree rain.

Josh Bretl:

It was awful.

Dave Schmidt:

Oh, it's beautiful.

Josh Bretl:

I was outside at soccer fields the entire time.

Josh Bretl:

And from 12 to one I was coaching, so I couldn't have

Josh Bretl:

an umbrella or anything.

Josh Bretl:

And I'm running up and on the field.

Josh Bretl:

It was the worst soccer experience.

Josh Bretl:

In fact, if I can find the picture, one of our teammate's

Josh Bretl:

moms took a picture of Alex and I in the frame together.

Josh Bretl:

And we're on the field, and it looks like a dripping

Josh Bretl:

wet Sasquatch, and Alex just looks miserable.

Josh Bretl:

It was pretty wet and cold.

Dave Schmidt:

:

That's wet and cold.

Dave Schmidt:

:

You know what can also be wet and cold?

Josh Bretl:

The snout of a golden retriever.

Dave Schmidt:

Yeah, that's actually true.

Dave Schmidt:

We have a goldendoodle, but I'll give you...

Dave Schmidt:

You've had golden retrievers growing up, so-

Josh Bretl:

mm-hmm.

Dave Schmidt:

A podcast that is inspired by the

Dave Schmidt:

kids' books, Who Would Win?

Dave Schmidt:

or Who Will Win?

Dave Schmidt:

And Landon has about 30 of these on his bookshelves.

Josh Bretl:

I think we have the same, in fact, last weekend I

Josh Bretl:

did read Ultimate Bug Rumble.

Dave Schmidt:

Yes.

Josh Bretl:

Who Would Win?

Josh Bretl:

And for those of you that haven't been able to read

Josh Bretl:

children's books in the last few years, these Who Would Win?

Josh Bretl:

Series is hot.

Josh Bretl:

And what they do is they take animals that are out

Josh Bretl:

there, and they say, "If they fought, who would win?"

Josh Bretl:

And they'd take a few of them.

Josh Bretl:

So there's some in-depth ones.

Josh Bretl:

They'd be like, "Tiger versus Lion."

Josh Bretl:

And they would talk about the tiger, and they'd talk

Josh Bretl:

about the lion, and the last few pages they'd make them

Josh Bretl:

fight, and they'd come up with a hypothetical outcome.

Josh Bretl:

But then as they've advanced, they now have tournament

Josh Bretl:

style where, "There'll be like four rounds of 16 animals

Josh Bretl:

come in, who's going to win?"

Josh Bretl:

And it was the final one was hornet versus...

Josh Bretl:

I don't remember who it was, but hornet wins.

Josh Bretl:

I know Hornet won the whole thing.

Dave Schmidt:

They're great.

Dave Schmidt:

And it's funny, because usually an animal or a bug

Dave Schmidt:

ends up dying at the end, but it's not gruesome.

Dave Schmidt:

And it's still teaching kids like, "Yeah, survival

Dave Schmidt:

of the fittest, man."

Josh Bretl:

Yeah, and the kids freaking love it-

Dave Schmidt:

They do.

Josh Bretl:

But they learn a lot about the bugs.

Josh Bretl:

They'd be like, "Well, yeah, did you know that a bee will lose

Josh Bretl:

its stinger in human skin, but a hornet will not because it

Josh Bretl:

has a more flexible stinger."

Josh Bretl:

It's just like now they're spouting this off of breakfast.

Dave Schmidt:

Oh, totally.

Dave Schmidt:

And there's one.

Dave Schmidt:

I can't remember which one it is.

Dave Schmidt:

I think it's scorpion versus tarantula.

Dave Schmidt:

And there's pictures of kids in Africa eating

Dave Schmidt:

buckets of fried scorpions.

Dave Schmidt:

And it grosses me out, and Landon knows this.

Dave Schmidt:

So I'll be randomly sitting there having snack, and

Dave Schmidt:

he'll run up and he'll shove the picture in my face.

Dave Schmidt:

And I'm like, "Man, you are just like me."

Josh Bretl:

I would've so done that to my dad.

Dave Schmidt:

Totally.

Dave Schmidt:

So that being said, I am thrilled to see the title

Dave Schmidt:

of today's show, Josh.

Dave Schmidt:

And what are we doing here?

Josh Bretl:

well, this one comes to us from Erin.

Josh Bretl:

We finished tax season here in the office.

Josh Bretl:

And we don't do tax returns for a lot of people anymore, but

Josh Bretl:

we still do a few tax returns.

Alex:

Hashtag tax nerd.

Josh Bretl:

Yeah, 'cause taxes are important.

Josh Bretl:

And so the whole season it kind of wrapped up, and

Josh Bretl:

everyone's thinking about taxes.

Josh Bretl:

And she says to me, and she goes, "You know what?

Josh Bretl:

Your next podcast should do on the importance of tax

Josh Bretl:

planning versus tax preparation.

Josh Bretl:

What's more important?"

Josh Bretl:

And I said, "Well, that sounds like a Who Would Win?

Josh Bretl:

Book Scorpion versus Tarantula?

Dave Schmidt:

That's how it happened?

Josh Bretl:

Yeah.

Dave Schmidt:

That's how it came about.

Josh Bretl:

It was.

Josh Bretl:

Tax planning versus tax preparation 'cause she has a

Josh Bretl:

kid the same age as our kids.

Josh Bretl:

But no, it was Erin's idea and the who would win concept of tax

Josh Bretl:

planning versus tax preparation.

Josh Bretl:

Everyone gets concerned about tax preparation.

Josh Bretl:

Now, let me define what these two things are.

Josh Bretl:

Tax preparation is what happens in February, March and April.

Josh Bretl:

So in January and early February, you start

Josh Bretl:

getting all your documents.

Josh Bretl:

You get your W2s and your 1099s and your 1098s and

Josh Bretl:

all the fun stuff that looks really official.

Dave Schmidt:

Your 403[b]s.

Josh Bretl:

Well, no.

Dave Schmidt:

No, no, no.

Dave Schmidt:

I'm just-

Josh Bretl:

No.

Dave Schmidt:

First number I could come up with.

Josh Bretl:

Yeah, well, same thing.

Josh Bretl:

It's a code.

Josh Bretl:

But you get these, and you either do it on TurboTax, or

Josh Bretl:

you bring it to your accountant or H&R Block or somewhere,

Josh Bretl:

and you go through this process, this annual ritual

Josh Bretl:

of preparing your tax return.

Josh Bretl:

It's a giant pain in the butt.

Josh Bretl:

And People think this is hard to do.

Josh Bretl:

And it is.

Josh Bretl:

It's not the easiest thing, the IRS makes it complicated.

Josh Bretl:

But that's tax preparation.

Josh Bretl:

And what you're doing is you're taking the

Josh Bretl:

prior year's information.

Josh Bretl:

So we're in 2023, and in tax preparation, we were taking

Josh Bretl:

all of the 2022 information, and we're reconciling it.

Josh Bretl:

So we're saying, "Okay, here's your income, here's your

Josh Bretl:

deductions, here's how much taxes you've already paid."

Josh Bretl:

And then we compare that to what you owe.

Josh Bretl:

Do you owe more, or do you get a refund?

Josh Bretl:

That's the whole concept of tax preparation.

Josh Bretl:

And it is important.

Josh Bretl:

I'm not saying it's not important.

Josh Bretl:

It is important.

Josh Bretl:

But tax planning, on the other side, is things that

Josh Bretl:

you do throughout the year.

Josh Bretl:

There's things that you do to get ready for tax preparation.

Josh Bretl:

It's to put yourself in a better scenario.

Josh Bretl:

What we hear a lot is clients or people who come in, they'll

Josh Bretl:

get really hung up on tax prep.

Josh Bretl:

And they all they care about is, " God, it's such

Josh Bretl:

a pain in the butt," or "Am I getting a refund?

Josh Bretl:

Am I doing this or that?"

Josh Bretl:

But they don't think about all the stuff that goes into it.

Josh Bretl:

And I think a lot of it there are times are unaware of it or

Josh Bretl:

they have no idea how to do it.

Josh Bretl:

But this goes into our own your retirement planning

Josh Bretl:

process where this is something that you can control,

Josh Bretl:

this is something that you want to take control off.

Dave Schmidt:

I don't want to steal your thunder, but I want

Dave Schmidt:

to be proactive, not reactive.

Josh Bretl:

Ooh.

Dave Schmidt:

Yeah.

Dave Schmidt:

Now, yes, Erin wrote that in the notes, but

Dave Schmidt:

I did catch on to that.

Josh Bretl:

That's a lot about taking control and ownership, is

Josh Bretl:

that proactive versus reactive.

Josh Bretl:

Let's go through some of the notes that she wrote here.

Dave Schmidt:

So I just flipped over the back of my

Dave Schmidt:

piece of paper, and it has all my DR2R notes, and Josh

Dave Schmidt:

is trying to sneak a peak.

Dave Schmidt:

So I got to keep that private for later.

Dave Schmidt:

It's top secret stuff.

Josh Bretl:

Top secret DR2R.

Dave Schmidt:

Yes.

Josh Bretl:

Well, let's start with proactive versus reactive.

Dave Schmidt:

Please, please.

Josh Bretl:

This is something that Erin put together here.

Josh Bretl:

And tax planning is a proactive approach to managing

Josh Bretl:

taxes or the tax liability.

Josh Bretl:

And instead of just waiting for tax season, you're

Josh Bretl:

taking the bull by the horns.

Josh Bretl:

And it allows you to take steps throughout the year

Josh Bretl:

to minimize your taxes that you know are coming.

Josh Bretl:

And it may not be just for this year, but it could be

Josh Bretl:

for the rest of your life.

Josh Bretl:

And especially for retirees, now is a great time to do that.

Josh Bretl:

So let me give you some examples of what they may be.

Josh Bretl:

Tax loss harvesting.

Josh Bretl:

We did a whole thing on the importance of recognizing

Josh Bretl:

gains and watching gains and capital gains inside

Josh Bretl:

of taxable accounts.

Josh Bretl:

That's something you don't wait till the end of the year,

Josh Bretl:

you do it throughout the year.

Josh Bretl:

What you're going to do with RMDs, charitable gifting,

Josh Bretl:

what you're going to do with Roth conversions, where

Josh Bretl:

money's going to come from.

Josh Bretl:

All of those things you can be proactive with as opposed to

Josh Bretl:

waiting for the 1099 to come out and be like, "Oh man, I

Josh Bretl:

got to pay so much in taxes."

Josh Bretl:

It's a thoughtful, proactive approach.

Josh Bretl:

And it really allows you to focus on minimizing taxes.

Josh Bretl:

With a tax planning strategy, it allows you to identify

Josh Bretl:

opportunities that you may not have realized just by

Josh Bretl:

putting things in a TurboTax.

Josh Bretl:

With a good plan as you're looking out five, 10 years from

Josh Bretl:

now, right now you may not have RMDs, you may not have social

Josh Bretl:

security, you may just be living off of something, and you have

Josh Bretl:

a really simple tax return.

Josh Bretl:

But by focusing on the long-term approach and looking at where

Josh Bretl:

you stand today versus five years from now, it allows

Josh Bretl:

you to do some planning to be very, very proactive there.

Josh Bretl:

Tax planning can allow you to pay less for Medicare

Josh Bretl:

with those Irma surcharges.

Josh Bretl:

Tax planning can allow your social security to be tax-free.

Josh Bretl:

Tax planning can allow you to take money out of your

Josh Bretl:

401ks and IRAs cheaper.

Josh Bretl:

Tax planning can do a whole bunch of things.

Josh Bretl:

Tax preparation is all you're doing is taking whatever

Josh Bretl:

you did in the prior year and reporting it to the IRS.

Josh Bretl:

Let's talk about tax preparation for a little bit.

Josh Bretl:

Tax preparation is becoming easier and easier to do, and

Josh Bretl:

it's becoming more and more onerous on tax professionals.

Josh Bretl:

So if you want to hire a tax professional right now, if you

Josh Bretl:

want to hire a CPA to do your tax returns, it's becoming

Josh Bretl:

harder and harder to find one.

Josh Bretl:

The CPA profession is...

Josh Bretl:

Not going to say it's a dying profession, but it kind

Josh Bretl:

of is a dying profession.

Josh Bretl:

The young people are not coming into it.

Josh Bretl:

They're not being able to replace the retirees in

Josh Bretl:

any way, shape or form.

Josh Bretl:

And where they are going into it is they're going into these

Josh Bretl:

giant audit companies and these giant finance companies.

Josh Bretl:

No one's coming into the individual small

Josh Bretl:

practice anymore.

Josh Bretl:

So what's happening is we refer clients out.

Josh Bretl:

We are having a hard time trying to refer clients to CPAs unless

Josh Bretl:

it's a really complex situation.

Josh Bretl:

If you've got rental properties, and if you've got all sorts

Josh Bretl:

of different things, and you're used to paying a

Josh Bretl:

couple thousand dollars to have your taxes prepared,

Josh Bretl:

we can find you somebody.

Josh Bretl:

But if you're someone who paid $500 to your local CPA,

Josh Bretl:

and all of a sudden he's 75, 80 years old, and they're not

Josh Bretl:

doing it anymore, trying to find somebody else can become

Josh Bretl:

really, really difficult.

Josh Bretl:

That's where we're saying TurboTax is a great solution.

Josh Bretl:

H&R Block, for most people, is a good solution.

Josh Bretl:

But most people's situation is not complex enough where

Josh Bretl:

you can't do it yourself.

Josh Bretl:

And here's my prediction.

Josh Bretl:

Do you have a prediction?

Josh Bretl:

But-

Dave Schmidt:

Josh predicts the future.

Dave Schmidt:

Oh yeah.

Dave Schmidt:

Is that good or no?

Josh Bretl:

Yeah.

Dave Schmidt:

Okay.

Josh Bretl:

I like it.

Dave Schmidt:

All right.

Josh Bretl:

That's a good one.

Josh Bretl:

You really like to end things with, "Yeah."

Dave Schmidt:

I do.

Dave Schmidt:

Yeah, it's just me.

Dave Schmidt:

Yeah, man, that's the way I am.

Josh Bretl:

I think with AI and the automated intelligence of

Josh Bretl:

everything going on right now, that what will happen in the

Josh Bretl:

near future, meaning within the next 10 years, you will just

Josh Bretl:

get a letter from the IRS that says, "Here's your income we

Josh Bretl:

see, here's your deductions we see, here's the taxes you owe.

Josh Bretl:

There won't be tax preparation for 95% of America.

Dave Schmidt:

That'd be nice.

Josh Bretl:

Yeah.

Josh Bretl:

And it's there.

Josh Bretl:

They almost have the technology already.

Josh Bretl:

I think tax preparation will actually be going away.

Dave Schmidt:

Hashtag Josh tips.

Dave Schmidt:

Let's go AI.

Josh Bretl:

Let's go AI.

Josh Bretl:

That does let lead back to the tax planning portion of it.

Josh Bretl:

When you're trying to hire a professional, a tax

Josh Bretl:

professional, where are you going to find value?

Josh Bretl:

And the value comes from somebody helping you reduce

Josh Bretl:

the things that are taxable.

Josh Bretl:

So to been able to find out different scenarios that you may

Josh Bretl:

not be able to take advantage of if the year's already passed.

Josh Bretl:

All right, so let's talk about some common tax planning tips

Josh Bretl:

that people should look for.

Josh Bretl:

The first thing you should look at is deductions.

Josh Bretl:

Are you maximizing deductions?

Josh Bretl:

So what does that mean?

Josh Bretl:

If you're still working, do you have your HSA?

Josh Bretl:

Are you maximizing contributions to your HSA?

Josh Bretl:

If you're saving for college, 529, depending on the state

Josh Bretl:

you're in, can be different.

Josh Bretl:

For example, we're here in the state of Illinois.

Josh Bretl:

Federally 529s are not deductible.

Josh Bretl:

But in the state of Illinois, if you use the Illinois 529 plan,

Josh Bretl:

you can deduct that on your Illinois return, which, hey,

Josh Bretl:

that's a thousand bucks a year in your pocket that is better

Josh Bretl:

off than somebody else's pocket.

Josh Bretl:

That's a tax planning tip.

Josh Bretl:

Where you contribute to.

Josh Bretl:

So are you putting money in a Roth IRA or a

Josh Bretl:

traditional IRA, your 401k?

Josh Bretl:

Where you're saving is a tax planning strategy.

Josh Bretl:

How you're getting money out is a tax planning strategy.

Josh Bretl:

Where are you going to take money from this year?

Josh Bretl:

When are you going to start social security as

Josh Bretl:

a tax planning strategy?

Josh Bretl:

Your non-qualified accounts, how are you going to get

Josh Bretl:

money out without paying capital gains taxes?

Josh Bretl:

If you're going to invest in dividend-paying stocks or things

Josh Bretl:

that produce income, where are you going to hold those assets?

Josh Bretl:

Those are all common income tax planning strategies.

Dave Schmidt:

I've heard you talk about these a lot.

Dave Schmidt:

It sounds like you're...

Dave Schmidt:

In that list you just went over, there's a combination

Dave Schmidt:

of specific things for when you are retired and

Dave Schmidt:

when you're still working.

Dave Schmidt:

Am I right?

Dave Schmidt:

Am I mis-

Josh Bretl:

No, you're-

Dave Schmidt:

Mishearing you?

Josh Bretl:

You are dead right?

Josh Bretl:

There's-

Dave Schmidt:

I know I am.

Dave Schmidt:

I love when you say that.

Dave Schmidt:

Say it again, Josh, slower.

Josh Bretl:

You are dead, right-

Dave Schmidt:

Oh yeah.

Josh Bretl:

Dave..

Dave Schmidt:

That's going to be the trailer.

Josh Bretl:

As you go through life, you have to realize that

Josh Bretl:

your life circumstances change, and the tax rules change.

Josh Bretl:

So there are different tax planning strategies for

Josh Bretl:

when A, you're young, have young children, B, as you

Josh Bretl:

get older, as you're still working, trying to retire.

Josh Bretl:

And B, when you're a retiree.

Josh Bretl:

And even a late-stage retiree.

Josh Bretl:

If you're not spending as much, and you're not as traveling

Josh Bretl:

and doing all the crazy things, there's some other areas that

Josh Bretl:

we have to be concerned about.

Josh Bretl:

Healthcare.

Josh Bretl:

All of a sudden, if you're coming up on some major

Josh Bretl:

healthcare expenses.

Josh Bretl:

So every stage of life you go through has different

Josh Bretl:

tax planning strategies that come to play.

Dave Schmidt:

We talked about, a few episodes ago, your old

Dave Schmidt:

tagline slash mission statement, tax-focused retirement planning.

Dave Schmidt:

And of course that is at the core of what you do, but it

Dave Schmidt:

doesn't define you, Josh.

Dave Schmidt:

Doesn't define Josh and FSR Wealth Strategies.

Josh Bretl:

Dave?

Dave Schmidt:

Yeah?

Josh Bretl:

Someday, I always thought, probably

Josh Bretl:

be fun to work with Dave.

Dave Schmidt:

Yeah, sure.

Dave Schmidt:

Everybody I've ever met said that.

Josh Bretl:

You don't meet many people, but it's-

Dave Schmidt:

four.

Josh Bretl:

Yeah.

Josh Bretl:

But I always thought in my mind, no, he's too out there; he would

Josh Bretl:

never be a part of our business.

Josh Bretl:

But truly, you added something, when you came into our office,

Josh Bretl:

that was exactly what we needed.

Josh Bretl:

And a lot of it has to do with that, as you looked at

Josh Bretl:

the bigger picture and as we changed that mission statement.

Josh Bretl:

Because you are right.

Josh Bretl:

I still believe that the tax-focused retirement planning

Josh Bretl:

is what sets us apart, why we're different than other

Josh Bretl:

people in the industry.

Josh Bretl:

But it's not what we believe in.

Josh Bretl:

It's not everything that we do.

Josh Bretl:

And it's just a portion of that ability to own your retirement.

Dave Schmidt:

It's just a small bit.

Dave Schmidt:

I do appreciate you recognizing what I bring.

Dave Schmidt:

I bring to the office wrinkly clothes, occasional bad hygiene.

Dave Schmidt:

No, I'm just kidding.

Dave Schmidt:

Totally messing.

Josh Bretl:

You never smell.

Dave Schmidt:

No, I don't 'cause I have my Bath and

Dave Schmidt:

Body Works lotion to cover up every possible odor.

Dave Schmidt:

Aw man, this is a good one.

Dave Schmidt:

It's a feel-good one.

Josh Bretl:

It is.

Josh Bretl:

And it's that who would win?

Josh Bretl:

And by the way, this isn't even a competition.

Josh Bretl:

Tax planning has beaten the snot out of tax preparation.

Josh Bretl:

Now, tax preparation is something that

Josh Bretl:

you got to deal with.

Josh Bretl:

Tax preparation's like, "Ugh, I got to do it."

Dave Schmidt:

sure, sure.

Josh Bretl:

But it's not nearly as important.

Josh Bretl:

If you can figure out how to do the tax preparation, it

Josh Bretl:

doesn't impact you as much as...

Josh Bretl:

It's a pain in the butt.

Josh Bretl:

It's not fun.

Josh Bretl:

But if you can figure out how to do it, it's super easy.

Josh Bretl:

The tax planning provides real value.

Josh Bretl:

It provides a life-changing opportunity to your

Josh Bretl:

financial picture.

Dave Schmidt:

Josh, I have a pretty good analogy too,

Dave Schmidt:

which I'm going to run this by Erin; maybe we

Dave Schmidt:

can rebrand this later on.

Dave Schmidt:

But this is essentially Dave versus Josh one-on-one

Dave Schmidt:

in the basketball court.

Dave Schmidt:

Dave is tax planning.

Dave Schmidt:

Josh is tax preparation.

Dave Schmidt:

Who would win?

Dave Schmidt:

If you listened to any of our other glory days

Dave Schmidt:

stories, you know that Dave would win in a landslide.

Josh Bretl:

Somehow you made taxes about

Josh Bretl:

high school basketball.

Dave Schmidt:

I can always tie it back to that.

Dave Schmidt:

Yeah.

Dave Schmidt:

Hey Mr.

Dave Schmidt:

Josh, let's take a break.

Dave Schmidt:

You've been talking for so long and my ears are sore.

Dave Schmidt:

Let's not make them snore.

Dave Schmidt:

Listening shouldn't be a chore.

Dave Schmidt:

So let's get to know Josh and Dave and watch our ratings soar!

Dave Schmidt:

So what I liked about that, it was one single "Mwah."

Dave Schmidt:

You've done a "Mwah, mwah" before.

Dave Schmidt:

This was a single "Mwah."

Dave Schmidt:

So congratulations.

Josh Bretl:

It was a big bird.

Josh Bretl:

It was a long big bird call.

Dave Schmidt:

I like that.

Dave Schmidt:

That's impressive.

Dave Schmidt:

You have not been using a Pod deck, I think, since episode 20.

Dave Schmidt:

So they're sitting there, they're pretty.

Dave Schmidt:

They were not free, by the way.

Dave Schmidt:

I paid for those without your credit card.

Josh Bretl:

Well, that's when you thought you were

Josh Bretl:

going to be doing a lot more podcasts with different people.

Dave Schmidt:

Yeah, that's true.

Dave Schmidt:

Then people actually heard me, and they're like,

Dave Schmidt:

"Yeah, we're not going to."

Dave Schmidt:

So what you got for me today, Josh?

Dave Schmidt:

Deep thoughts.

Dave Schmidt:

Should I pull a card out and read one?

Josh Bretl:

I haven't let you pick the question-

Dave Schmidt:

No.

Josh Bretl:

In a year, probably.

Dave Schmidt:

There's a little story behind this one for

Dave Schmidt:

me, so I'm going to read it.

Dave Schmidt:

It's not the most creative one.

Dave Schmidt:

It's also not inappropriate.

Dave Schmidt:

What's the strangest thing you've ever seen in

Dave Schmidt:

the middle of the road?

Josh Bretl:

The strangest thing I've ever seen in

Josh Bretl:

the middle of a road?

Dave Schmidt:

Mm-hmm.

Josh Bretl:

I don't know if it's in the middle of the road, but

Josh Bretl:

I'm going to go with this answer anyways 'cause I can't think of

Josh Bretl:

one for the middle of the road.

Josh Bretl:

But our old house, our backyard, I was in early twenties, I'm

Josh Bretl:

doing my own landscaping.

Josh Bretl:

And they had these big, overgrown bushes in

Josh Bretl:

the back of the house.

Josh Bretl:

And I was like, "I'm going to rip these bushes out.

Josh Bretl:

We're going to put some nice landscaping in."

Josh Bretl:

And there's these giant green evergreen things.

Josh Bretl:

I'm chopping them down.

Josh Bretl:

And I'm dripping of sweat.

Josh Bretl:

And I finally get the big overgrowth brought up.

Josh Bretl:

And underneath these bushes are 10 concrete yard gnomes,

Josh Bretl:

a yard squirrel, a concrete squirrel, and a microwave.

Dave Schmidt:

Stop it.

Dave Schmidt:

Wait, is this your house or your parents'?

Josh Bretl:

This is my house, my old house.

Dave Schmidt:

What?

Josh Bretl:

Yeah.

Josh Bretl:

And we have saved this squirrel.

Josh Bretl:

The gnomes didn't live much longer.

Josh Bretl:

But the squirrel has come with us to the new house because

Josh Bretl:

it's such a funny story.

Josh Bretl:

And we're like-

Dave Schmidt:

oh.

Josh Bretl:

This bushes, you could've found a dead body

Josh Bretl:

under there, it would've fit.

Josh Bretl:

But who puts a microwave under a bush?

Dave Schmidt:

:

Gosh, that's awful.

Dave Schmidt:

:

Okay, is this squirrel out in your yard now, so next time

Dave Schmidt:

:

I come over I can see him?

Josh Bretl:

I think he's hidden in the backyard.

Josh Bretl:

I think he's tucked away in the back corner there.

Dave Schmidt:

It's like the plastic Santa that we used

Dave Schmidt:

to pass around from house to house when we were younger.

Josh Bretl:

Oh, that still goes out in my house.

Dave Schmidt:

Oh, I bet.

Josh Bretl:

It sits in my backyard every winter.

Josh Bretl:

And I-

Dave Schmidt:

I bet it does.

Josh Bretl:

Send a picture to Phil and Joanne of it.

Dave Schmidt:

Mine is not super rare, but you know

Dave Schmidt:

how in my family, we love to ridicule our parents?

Dave Schmidt:

I think all kids, it's a rite of passage.

Dave Schmidt:

You just make fun of your parents.

Dave Schmidt:

And there's stories that we carry with us from

Dave Schmidt:

young childhood to today.

Dave Schmidt:

So every time we get together, we're going to Colorado in June-

Josh Bretl:

Yeah.

Dave Schmidt:

We will tell a story.

Dave Schmidt:

But we were-

Josh Bretl:

I love when your sisters sit around and-

Dave Schmidt:

oh yeah.

Josh Bretl:

Tell a story.

Dave Schmidt:

Oh, it's the best.

Dave Schmidt:

I'm going to say I was probably late elementary

Dave Schmidt:

school, early middle school.

Dave Schmidt:

And we were in Door County, that was our annual

Dave Schmidt:

trip up to Door County.

Dave Schmidt:

We were driving on the road at night, and we came across

Dave Schmidt:

a deer that had just been hit.

Dave Schmidt:

Right.

Dave Schmidt:

Okay.

Dave Schmidt:

And so he was already deceased and everything.

Dave Schmidt:

And me and my sisters were just distraught 'cause we

Dave Schmidt:

had never seen this before.

Dave Schmidt:

We were just distraught.

Dave Schmidt:

And my mom, Becks, in true Becks fashion, goes, "Ugh,

Dave Schmidt:

they're overpopulated anyway" and just kept on driving.

Dave Schmidt:

You can imagine me and Julie cried the whole way

Dave Schmidt:

home, saying, "How dare you say something like that?"

Dave Schmidt:

And so to this day, we'll say something like, "Hey, ma.

Dave Schmidt:

Did you see a dead human on the road?

Dave Schmidt:

Are humans overpopulated now?

Dave Schmidt:

Do you have a heart now?"

Dave Schmidt:

So yes, while not super rare, it still has a very funny

Dave Schmidt:

memory from we were kids.

Dave Schmidt:

Yeah, that's good old Becks.

Dave Schmidt:

Does that surprise you at all?

Josh Bretl:

No, but I am starting to realize, as a

Josh Bretl:

parent, things come out of your mouth that you realize are going

Josh Bretl:

to come back later to haunt you.

Dave Schmidt:

Totally.

Josh Bretl:

So that may have been one of those for her.

Dave Schmidt:

Oh, without a doubt.

Josh Bretl:

So-

Dave Schmidt:

yeah.

Dave Schmidt:

I feel like we're- yeah.

Dave Schmidt:

Dave relates to retirees, yeah.

Dave Schmidt:

Thank you for not talking over the end.

Josh Bretl:

See the, yeah, at the end?

Dave Schmidt:

Yeah, it was very nice.

Josh Bretl:

It was kind of like I knew it was coming.

Dave Schmidt:

Yeah, you did.

Josh Bretl:

Now-

Dave Schmidt:

yeah, sure.

Josh Bretl:

I've been running around the office this morning.

Josh Bretl:

I had a client come in all of a sudden.

Josh Bretl:

And every time I come in, you've been frantically

Josh Bretl:

working on something, and I think this is it, so I'm dying

Josh Bretl:

to hear what this DR2R is.

Dave Schmidt:

No, no, no.

Dave Schmidt:

Don't build it up that much 'cause it's not going to live

Dave Schmidt:

up up to your expectations.

Dave Schmidt:

This is not what I've been frantically doing.

Dave Schmidt:

I did this right before we started recording.

Dave Schmidt:

But dear retirees, soon to be retiree, as I always

Dave Schmidt:

say, I can relate to you on a deep level with this.

Dave Schmidt:

I look at this as reactive versus proactive.

Dave Schmidt:

Anybody, again, that knows me or has heard this podcast would

Dave Schmidt:

say I'm categorically reactive.

Dave Schmidt:

Would you agree?

Josh Bretl:

I would say you're generally a reactive person.

Josh Bretl:

But you do think proactively.

Dave Schmidt:

Well, in my work life, I'm more proactive.

Dave Schmidt:

In my personal life and responsibilities-

Josh Bretl:

oh yeah.

Josh Bretl:

Personal life, you are so reactive-

Dave Schmidt:

yeah.

Josh Bretl:

Yeah.

Dave Schmidt:

I mean things such as Josh and my

Dave Schmidt:

buddies say, "Dave, hey, we're going out for dinner.

Dave Schmidt:

You got your wallet on you?"

Dave Schmidt:

"Oh, I didn't plan for my wallet."

Dave Schmidt:

Or...

Josh Bretl:

If you are proactive in that, I'm

Josh Bretl:

going to be really upset.

Dave Schmidt:

I know.

Dave Schmidt:

Or "Dave, hey, you need to register Landon

Dave Schmidt:

for school next year.

Dave Schmidt:

Have you guys done that?"

Dave Schmidt:

"Oh.

Dave Schmidt:

Oh, no, no.

Dave Schmidt:

We'll get to it," or "Dave, have you washed your

Dave Schmidt:

clothes lately and you're wearing fresh skivvies?"

Dave Schmidt:

"No, I didn't plan for that either."

Dave Schmidt:

But where I am proactive, friends, where I will never let

Dave Schmidt:

anybody down is when I am at a gathering or at a party, I am

Dave Schmidt:

always the go-to to order pizza.

Dave Schmidt:

People always come to me and say, "Dave, how many

Dave Schmidt:

pizzas should we order?"

Dave Schmidt:

And this has happened a dozen or more times throughout my life.

Dave Schmidt:

And while that may seem reactive on the face, when

Dave Schmidt:

I walk into a room, any room at any given moment, any time

Dave Schmidt:

in my life, I am planning for how much pizza I should order.

Dave Schmidt:

I walked into the office today, I said, "There's

Dave Schmidt:

eight of us here.

Dave Schmidt:

Okay, I'm going to need two large pizzas from Mama Maria's."

Dave Schmidt:

I always know.

Dave Schmidt:

So I am always proactively seeking what pizza to order.

Moral of the story:

got to order pizza, give me a call.

Josh Bretl:

I wish you all could see what's

Josh Bretl:

inside my brain right now.

Dave Schmidt:

Yeah.

Dave Schmidt:

I kind of want to know.

Josh Bretl:

Well, I'm glad I built that one up.

Dave Schmidt:

Yeah.

Josh Bretl:

So-

Dave Schmidt:

I was going to say.

Dave Schmidt:

I'm just saying, man.

Dave Schmidt:

Proactive pizza guy here.

Josh Bretl:

Well, first off, you are right.

Josh Bretl:

We do go to you for pizza decisions.

Dave Schmidt:

Always.

Josh Bretl:

On the who would win category though, I don't

Josh Bretl:

know if it really ties into tax planning versus tax preparation.

Dave Schmidt:

Oh no, I was going reactive versus proactive.

Josh Bretl:

Is that what it was?

Dave Schmidt:

Yes, that's what I was saying.

Josh Bretl:

The importance.

Dave Schmidt:

Yeah.

Dave Schmidt:

Okay, let me wrap a bow around this because that's a phrase you

Dave Schmidt:

struggled with last podcast was-

Josh Bretl:

oh, a bow.

Josh Bretl:

Tie a bow around it?

Dave Schmidt:

Yeah, tie a bow around.

Dave Schmidt:

Yeah, something like that.

Dave Schmidt:

You may be reactive in all other sorts of life, but when

Dave Schmidt:

it comes to your taxes and your money, be proactive, just

Dave Schmidt:

like I am with ordering pizza.

Dave Schmidt:

How about that?

Dave Schmidt:

I gotcha, didn't I?

Dave Schmidt:

You're emotional right now.

Dave Schmidt:

You are struggling for words, I can see it.

Josh Bretl:

I think what you say makes sense.

Josh Bretl:

But I think when we talk about the importance of

Josh Bretl:

proactive versus reactive, being proactive is important.

Josh Bretl:

And that would make sense where tax planning, being proactive,

Josh Bretl:

is way more valuable than tax preparation, being reactive.

Dave Schmidt:

Sure.

Josh Bretl:

But I will also say that I made a point to

Josh Bretl:

say that tax preparation is really a pain in the butt, but

Josh Bretl:

it's relatively easy to do.

Josh Bretl:

And well, ordering pizza is a pain in the butt 'cause you

Josh Bretl:

got to make a lot of people happy, and no one's ever

Josh Bretl:

happy all the way through, and it's a pain in the butt.

Josh Bretl:

But it's not that hard to pick up the phone and

Josh Bretl:

say, "Hey Mama Maria, send me two large cheeses."

Josh Bretl:

And-

Dave Schmidt:

we disagree.

... Josh Bretl:

where I actually think the importance would

... Josh Bretl:

play into getting your kid registered for school and

... Josh Bretl:

washing your underwear and things along those lines.

... Josh Bretl:

Some would argue that those animals in the wild would

... Josh Bretl:

be more dominating than the proactive needs to order pizza.

... Josh Bretl:

But-

Dave Schmidt:

We can agree to disagree.

Josh Bretl:

We can.

Dave Schmidt:

Yeah.

Josh Bretl:

We can.

Josh Bretl:

But I hope everyone can agree that tax planning

Josh Bretl:

provides way more value to retirees and soon-to-be

Josh Bretl:

retirees than tax preparation.

Dave Schmidt:

Sure.

Dave Schmidt:

I'm going to give you this win here today, Josh.

Dave Schmidt:

This is all yours.

Josh Bretl:

Who would win, Josh versus Dave-

Dave Schmidt:

Well-

Josh Bretl:

The ultimate battle?

... Dave Schmidt:

today, it was not very ultimate.

... Dave Schmidt:

Josh kicked my butt.

... Dave Schmidt:

This is good.

... Dave Schmidt:

I like these who would win?

... Dave Schmidt:

You know what?

... Dave Schmidt:

I'm thinking I might actually write and illustrate a

... Dave Schmidt:

book for our listeners about this episode.

... Dave Schmidt:

I'll make our own Who Would Win book for tax

... Dave Schmidt:

prep versus tax planning.

Josh Bretl:

I'd like to see how tax planning is illustrated

Josh Bretl:

versus tax preparation.

Dave Schmidt:

I'll have special guest, Alex Bretl, to explain

Dave Schmidt:

the differences in kid terms, and I'll illustrate it out.

Josh Bretl:

That's awesome.

Josh Bretl:

That's awesome.

Dave Schmidt:

We'll give them out at the client

Dave Schmidt:

events coming up here.

Dave Schmidt:

Alrighty Josh, what's in store here for next episode?

Josh Bretl:

The next episode.

Josh Bretl:

I wanted to talk a little bit more about some of the

Josh Bretl:

things you should look for in hiring the right advisor.

Josh Bretl:

If you're going to truly own your retirement, what should

Josh Bretl:

you be looking for, what shouldn't you be looking for?

Josh Bretl:

A little bit of a Who Would Win theory.

Josh Bretl:

But we've talked about a lot of really in-depth topics

Josh Bretl:

in the last couple months.

Josh Bretl:

If you were looking for help, I wanted to put out there some

Josh Bretl:

of the things that you should be asking, some of the things

Josh Bretl:

that you should be looking for.

Josh Bretl:

And I think our next topic will be a proactive, if you

Josh Bretl:

will, approach to hiring the right person to help you,

Josh Bretl:

if that's what you should choose to do in your life.

Dave Schmidt:

All right.

Dave Schmidt:

Who would win?

Dave Schmidt:

I thought we were going to wrap up at around 20 minutes,

Dave Schmidt:

and we clearly did not.

Dave Schmidt:

So-

Josh Bretl:

We did not.

Dave Schmidt:

No.

Josh Bretl:

I think that has to do with the random

Josh Bretl:

stories at the end.

Dave Schmidt:

The random stories and the epic who DR2R.

Josh Bretl:

Epic.

Dave Schmidt:

So yeah.

Dave Schmidt:

I did get a message from my dad really quick, and he said he

Dave Schmidt:

is disheartened that we have dropped the, "Bye,' even though

Dave Schmidt:

we kind of started doing it.

Dave Schmidt:

He said, "However, change is not always bad."

Dave Schmidt:

He's very prophetic, my dad, he's just a wise man.

Dave Schmidt:

So-

Josh Bretl:

prophetic?

Dave Schmidt:

Prophetic.

Josh Bretl:

Is he okay?

Dave Schmidt:

Doesn't that mean he's very profound, and-

Josh Bretl:

I have no idea.

Dave Schmidt:

He speaks prophecies, and he's-

Josh Bretl:

You know who's not prophetic?

Dave Schmidt:

Who?

Josh Bretl:

This guy.

Dave Schmidt:

Yeah, that's true.

Dave Schmidt:

So until we figure out what to say, we're

Dave Schmidt:

going to just go with...

Dave Schmidt:

Bye.

Josh Bretl:

That ended longer than I thought I was going to.

Dave Schmidt:

That's what happens when we have fun.
