Speaker:

This is a dwelling place

from Entrusted Ministries.

2

:

I'm Stephanie Hickox.

3

:

Today we'll be looking at

Exodus chapter 17 through 20.

4

:

Every time that they have come.

5

:

To a spot in the wilderness where

they haven't had what they needed.

6

:

God provided it.

7

:

Even when they're grumbling and they

have horrible attitudes, he graciously

8

:

provides exactly what they need.

9

:

The manna rains down from heaven, and the

word manna literally means what is it?

10

:

' It had everything they needed

nutritionally, and it was

11

:

slightly sweet call me crazy.

12

:

But I wonder if this almost had a

similar composition to a mom's milk.

13

:

It has everything that a baby needs

and I've heard there's a sweetness to

14

:

it, though I can't remember myself.

15

:

It just shows the kindness of the

Lord that he's gonna provide this

16

:

every single day that they're in

the wilderness and be watching for

17

:

the day that God has its cease,

18

:

in Chapter 17, the people of

Israel are going to face their very

19

:

first war against the Amalekites.

20

:

They're named after Amalek,

who is the grandson of Esau.

21

:

His descendants continually represent

the enemies of God in scripture,

22

:

we're also going to see an

introduction to Joshua, who will

23

:

become Israel's leader after Moses

24

:

17 nine tells us, so Moses said

to Joshua, choose for us men and

25

:

go out and fight with Amalek.

26

:

Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the

hill with the staff of God in my hand.

27

:

So Joshua, did as Moses told him and

fought with Amalek while Moses, Aaron

28

:

and her went up to the top of the

hill whenever Moses held up his hand.

29

:

Israel prevailed, and whenever he

lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed.

30

:

But Moses' hands grew weary, so they

took a stone and put it under him,

31

:

and he sat on it while Aaron and her

held up his hands, one on one side

32

:

and the other on the other side.

33

:

So his hands were steady until the going

down of the sun, and Joshua overwhelmed

34

:

Amalek and his people with sword.

35

:

Then the Lord said to Moses.

36

:

Write this as a memorial in a book

and recite it in the ears of Joshua

37

:

that I will utterly blot out the

memory of Amalek from under heaven.

38

:

And Moses built an altar and called

the name of it the Lord is my banner

39

:

We were not created to do this alone and

although God was requiring something from

40

:

Moses, he didn't ask him to do it alone.

41

:

If you are feeling like your arms are

weary, then it's time to just raise a hand

42

:

and say, I need some support right now.

43

:

And don't be ashamed, we need

others, and it's how the body

44

:

of Christ was created to work.

45

:

Moses would've had

training as an Egyptian,

46

:

and he would've learned writing and record

keeping in Pharaoh's governmental school.

47

:

Now he's equipped to record.

48

:

What the Lord is doing, and I love that

it says recited in the ears of Joshua.

49

:

it seems like it's a holy

pep talk that the Lord is

50

:

building up Joshua's faith here

51

:

and a new name of God is introduced.

52

:

The Lord is my banner.

53

:

We can victoriously face

whatever comes our way,

54

:

knowing that the Lord is our victory

55

:

In chapter 18, Moses is

reunited with his father-in-law.

56

:

Jethro

57

:

Interestingly, 18 two tells us now,

Jethro Moses' father-in-law had taken

58

:

Zipporah Moses' wife after he had

sent her home along with her two sons.

59

:

. So Moses' wife and

children weren't with him.

60

:

And then how do you think that they

would've arranged to meet back up

61

:

together without the Lord's intervention?

62

:

I can't imagine how they would know

where to find each other again.

63

:

But they did

64

:

It seems that they're truly

rejoicing to see each other again.

65

:

and Jethro is going to be a voice

of reason in Moses' life and say

66

:

all that you're doing for the

people, it's just too much for you.

67

:

This is a very different relationship than

Jacob had with his father-in-law, Laben.

68

:

I'm gonna link an episode of our

other podcast in the show notes.

69

:

because having a strife with an

in-law can be truly difficult.

70

:

I am so blessed to have a

mother-in-law like a Jethro to me.

71

:

And though she is very careful about

when she speaks into my life or into

72

:

my parenting, I know when she does.

73

:

That I should listen up.

74

:

I was almost afraid to tell her when

the Lord put this project on my heart,

75

:

because I thought she was going to

say, Stephanie, there's no way that

76

:

you could take that on right now too.

77

:

But when she said, I think you

should do it, I felt I could

78

:

confidently walk forward.

79

:

And I cannot help but think of motherhood.

80

:

When I read 1813, the next day, Moses

sat to judge the people and the people

81

:

stood around Moses from morning till

evening when Moses' father-in-law saw

82

:

all that he was doing for the people.

83

:

He said, what is this that

you are doing for the people?

84

:

Why do you sit alone and all

the people stand around you

85

:

from morning till evening?

86

:

And his father-in-law tells him

what you're doing is not good.

87

:

You and the people with you will

certainly wear yourselves out for

88

:

this thing is too heavy for you.

89

:

Doesn't that sound like what we do?

90

:

There are people standing around

you for morning till evening trying

91

:

to have you solve their problems.

92

:

Jethro actually introduces

an idea of representative

93

:

government here, and he says,

94

:

find some men who fear God and are

trustworthy and place them over the

95

:

thousands, the hundreds, the fifties,

and the tens, and make them be judges.

96

:

And then have them bring

the hardest cases to you.

97

:

This is a passage of scripture that

different founders of nations looked to

98

:

for how can we set up our government?

99

:

In chapter 19, God tells them, I want you

to consecrate yourselves and get ready.

100

:

Do you remember in the burning bush moment

where God says, this will be a sign to you

101

:

that you will worship me on this mountain?

102

:

That fulfillment is gonna happen here.

103

:

In 19 three while Moses went up to God,

the Lord called to him out of the mountain

104

:

saying, thus you shall say to the house

of Jacob and tell the people of Israel.

105

:

You yourselves have seen what I did to the

Egyptians and how I bore you on Eagle's

106

:

wings and brought you to myself now.

107

:

Therefore, if you will

indeed obey my voice.

108

:

And keep my covenant.

109

:

You shall be my treasured

possession among all peoples.

110

:

For all the earth is mine and

you shall be to me, a kingdom

111

:

of priests and a holy nation.

112

:

I can't help think about

one Peter two, nine

113

:

but you are a chosen race, a royal

priesthood, a holy nation, a people for

114

:

his own possession that you may proclaim

the excellencies of him who called you out

115

:

of darkness into his marvelous light and

God is saying, you are important to me.

116

:

you're chosen and you're

a unique treasure.

117

:

To give these titles, it really

means that this is a new nation under

118

:

God and that they have an important

relationship with the Lord, a

119

:

responsibility to the rest of humanity,

120

:

and they're going to have a unique

standing in the world of nations,

121

:

as my moody commentary says.

122

:

So it's a new name and privilege, a new

responsibility, and a new character.

123

:

These verses have been referred to as the

Great Commission of the Old Testament.

124

:

God is separating them out for a purpose.

125

:

1916 tells us on the morning of the third

day there were thunders and lightnings

126

:

and a thick cloud in the mountain,

and a very loud trumpet blast so that

127

:

all the people in the camp trembled.

128

:

Then Moses brought the people out of

the camp to meet God and they took

129

:

their stand at the foot of the mountain.

130

:

Now Mount Sinai was wrapped

in smoke because the Lord

131

:

had descended on it in fire.

132

:

The smoke of it went up like

the smoke of a kiln, and the

133

:

whole mountain trembled greatly.

134

:

And as the sound of the trumpet

grew louder and louder, Moses spoke

135

:

and God answered him in thunder.

136

:

The Lord came down on Mount

Sinai to the top of the mountain.

137

:

And the Lord called Moses to the top

of the mountain and Moses went up

138

:

and this is where God

gives the 10 Commandments.

139

:

Chapter 20 is an absolute

can't miss chapter.

140

:

And God spoke all these words

saying, I am the Lord your God,

141

:

who brought you out of the land of

Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

142

:

You shall have no other gods before me.

143

:

You shall not make for yourself

a carved image or any likeness of

144

:

anything that is in heaven above,

or that is in the earth beneath or

145

:

that is in the water under the earth.

146

:

You shall not bow down to them or serve

them for I the Lord your God, and a

147

:

jealous God visiting the iniquity of the

fathers and the children to the third and

148

:

the fourth generation of those who hate

me, but showing steadfast love to those

149

:

who love me and keep my commandments.

150

:

You shall not take the name of

the Lord your God in vain, for

151

:

the Lord will not hold him.

152

:

Guiltless, who takes his name in vain.

153

:

Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.

154

:

Six days you shall labor and do

all your work, but the seventh day

155

:

is a Sabbath to the Lord your God.

156

:

On it.

157

:

You shall not do any work.

158

:

You or your son or your daughter,

your male servant, or your female

159

:

servant, or your livestock, or the

sojourner who is within your gates.

160

:

For in six days, the Lord made heaven

and earth the sea and all that is

161

:

in them and rested the seventh day.

162

:

Therefore, the Lord blessed the

Sabbath day and made it holy honor

163

:

your father and your mother, that

your days may long in the land that

164

:

the Lord your God is giving you.

165

:

You shall not murder.

166

:

You shall not commit

adultery, you shall not steal.

167

:

You shall not be a false

witness against your neighbor.

168

:

You shall not covet your neighbor's house.

169

:

You shall not covert your neighbor's

wife or his male servant, or his female

170

:

servant, or his ax or his donkey,

or anything that is your neighbor's.

171

:

Now when all the people saw the thunder

and the flashes of lightning and the

172

:

sound of the trumpet and the mountain

smoking, the people were afraid and

173

:

trembled and they stood far off and said

to Moses, you speak to us and we will

174

:

listen, but do not let God speak to us.

175

:

Lest we die.

176

:

Moses said to the Peopledo, not

fear for God has come to test

177

:

you, that the fear of him may be

before you, that you may not sin.

178

:

The people stood far off while Moses drew

near to the thick darkness where God was.

179

:

Just as we saw in Genesis one and two.

180

:

God shows that he is

imminent and transcendent.

181

:

He's willing to draw near.

182

:

But he's still all powerful and

worthy of our awe and respect.

183

:

Psalm 40 verse eight says,

I delight to do your will.

184

:

Oh my God, your law is within my heart.

185

:

In our culture, we often look as rules

as the problem, but we need to see the

186

:

sin in our own hearts as a problem.

187

:

and we need to teach our kids

that rules are good, they're for

188

:

our blessing and our benefit.

189

:

God told us here that he's a God

of steadfast love and that the

190

:

blessings of obedience can follow

up to the thousandth generation and

191

:

unfortunately, the consequences of sin.

192

:

Often affect our children and our

grandchildren but God wants that

193

:

cycle to stop and he is able.

194

:

Heavenly Father,

195

:

As we meditate on the 10 Commandments, may

we see them as opportunities to honor you

196

:

and to be blessed.

197

:

Just as Moses drew near to

you, I pray that the call to

198

:

holiness would not hold us back,

199

:

but that we would be purified in our

hearts and in our actions before you.

200

:

May we know our limitations and

may we rely on others for help.

201

:

And Lord, we thank you that you reign

down manna and Jesus, you also gave us

202

:

that example to pray for our daily bread.

203

:

We thank you, that you are our

sustainer and our provider.

204

:

It's in your name, we pray Jesus.

205

:

Amen.
