00:00:08 Shreya: Welcome to the podcast, the space where we hold up a mirror to the parts of ourselves we have been afraid to look at and find something worth seeing. I'm your host, Shreya, and today we have a deeply meaningful conversation ahead. My guest is Saffron Turner, founder of the Institute for Holistic Health and Advanced, Energetic, and someone with nearly three decades of experience helping people reclaim their own innate capacity to heal. Saffron works at the intersection of energetics, consciousness, and deep inner transformation. And today we are talking about what it really means to hold light through the darkness. This is one of those episodes you will want to sit with long after it ends. So welcome, Safra. I'm really honored to have you on my show.

00:00:58 Safra Turner: Thank you so much for having me. I appreciate being here.

00:01:01 Shreya: Thank you so much. Safra. Before we just begin, a quick disclaimer for my listeners. Some statements reflect personal belief and experiences and are presented as individual views, not medical advice. Listeners should consult qualified professionals for medical conditions.

00:01:19 Shreya: And Safra, before we go deep, I want to start somewhere personal. Nearly three decades is a long time to work alongside people in their darkest places. So what first called you to this kind of work? Like what was it for you personally? What, like that made you say, this is the path?

00:01:41 Safra Turner: Well, I think with this particular question, I would actually say that that aspect of the lived experience came a little bit later, where as I've been healing for nearly thirty years and I've been working with individuals through all of the difficulties of life, my own personal experience as well, um, serving an active duty in the military, um, in another country, um, dealing with, with war and terrorism and experiences like that. I have definitely personally been through the gamut of experiences. However, on a personal level, and what really helped me to take what I believed I knew and turn it into tangible, real experience, uh, came into play really in about six years ago when the, when the world fell into the pandemic and the global chaos that went along with that and myself as a healer, um, went through a process that most, most have probably have no idea about. But we as healers were suppressed and censored and shunned. Um, and so I found myself in a space where I had to live what I taught, I had to live what I knew, and I had to live what I had spent a lifetime believing. Having been through all of the other experiences in this moment, I found myself having lost all of my business, having been deleted, uh, from the internet. All of my footprint on the internet had been removed and alone. Uh, nobody could really understand that other than others that have been through the process themselves, which it was difficult to find one another. So that period gave me an opportunity, a brilliant opportunity to truly find, know, hold my light and be aware of myself very, very consciously in some of the darkest moments of my own lifetime that turned what I had known in on the visceral level, on the level of, of having the knowledge around that brought it into a grounded state of truth as I lived the experience myself and healed through that experience myself.

00:04:10 Shreya: That's amazing. And there is a story that a lot of us carry, often even without realizing it, that darkness means something is wrong with us, that if we are struggling, it's because we are broken or we have failed somehow. So in your experience working with people, how often do you see that belief doing real damage and where do you think it actually comes from?

00:04:36 Safra Turner: Ah, so that brokenness that's that is the disconnect from oneself. That is the state where we have forgotten who we are on the core levels, and rather, we have become a version of an ego identity of what we believe that we are supposed to be or meant to be. We believe that life was supposed to be a certain way. Our experience was supposed to be a certain way. Um, and this comes from this ego based identity or a false identity of who we truly are. You are not broken. You are going through an experience. And the question is, how are you going to choose to respond or react to the experience that you're facing? Now, most of us are conditioned, taught, trained through a lifetime of, of, of our own lived experience to believe that that if we don't act or are a certain way, something is wrong with us. But really what is happening is that we are working to adjust to a world that is in itself broken, a society and an environment that is not healthy and is not healed. And our true selves are attempting to balance the experience of that. So if we are coming from where we have as a collective, been conditioned to experience life through our ego version of identity, we are going to react to situations around us and a reaction is not grounded and it's not necessarily practical. Rather it is. It is, uh, action through fear. Whereas if we stop in whatever the experience is, whether you are dealing with extreme anxiety, depressed states, whether life is just too heavy, or whether in the chaos that we're experiencing right now, you're just asking, why, why, why am I here? What am I doing? What's the point in any of these moments if you just stop and rather than react to the external environment of what's going on, make the choice to respond to a situation. What this does is it's going to pull ego, that false identity of what we believe. We are out of the picture, and it will help to ground you in the moment. Okay, this is happening. It's not me. This is occurring around me or this event is taking place, or I am experiencing an event. Whatever that event is, however horrible it might be, what am I going to do to make the choice to respond to this? AM I going to respond in fear, which is where I'm going to feel broken? I'm going to feel ashamed not enough, or am I going to respond from a space where I am watching these situations play out? I am observing them. However, I may not have control over what is happening outside of myself where I do have control is how I choose to play the game, how I choose to interact with that situation. When you see a situation and experience what you're going through yourself in those different states that you are experiencing from the perspective of observation, of saying, this is happening, it's happening with or without me. So what am I going to do within that state? It will give you the opportunity to see it from an experience, from a balanced state as yourself, within a moment, rather than that moment happening to you, and you have to react to it.

00:08:23 Shreya: I think that's such an important reframe, the idea that darkness might not be evidence of something broken, but evidence of something trying to surface. I think that changed the whole conversation. And I'm really curious, when someone comes to you in real pain, not just sadness, but, uh, the kind of darkness where they have lost contact with who they are. What they find is usually at the root, not the story they are telling themselves, but what is actually driving it.

00:08:53 Safra Turner: Yes. So everybody experiences life and the experiences that come out of life differently and in their own way. However. When you are going through the hardest of experiences, um, the passing of a loved one or, or a traumatic experience, something along those lines, what? Believe it or not, there is opportunity in that moment. And going back to by choosing to respond to a scenario rather than to react to it, you are able to see that there was nothing you can do to control whatever that experience was that broke you. And I can tell you I've been broken. I know, I know what that's like, that experience that broke you. What it is offering you is that opportunity to find. First of all, what is it that you within yourself are needing to heal? It could be that you have experiences from childhood that have never been been, uh, visited, that you've never looked into yourself, that you have never truly reflected on your own experience. And therefore you need to turn within to find who you are within that moment. And it could be that there are lessons. Well, it's not, could be it always. There are lessons that you can make the choice to take from the experience. Now, I have worked with individuals across the board from those that have dealt with loss, to those that are on their own path towards death, um, and everything in between, uh, all of the difficult mental states, all of the different experiences in between. And what has always become clear is that when they come to me, they're in a state of chaos. They're there whether it's angry with themselves, angry with the world, whatever it is, however they're expressing it. And when they're able to come to that moment where they're able to say, what is the lesson for me in this? What is this in, in this moment that I am releasing of myself? That false identity of what I believe rather is, is burning away. And I am beginning to grow into this new version of myself. Giving yourself that space to reflect and to release that which no longer belongs in your life. Um, but the, the original moment is a space where you are going to feel broken because you're breaking up. The parts of you that no longer belong are literally burning away as you grow into that new and much more powerful, um, aspect of self as you make the choice to consciously walk the healing process.

00:11:39 Shreya: And how do you help someone see that, especially when they are so inside the experience that they can't step back far enough to recognize the pattern? Yeah.

00:11:50 Safra Turner: So one thing that I have found and, and that it's just across the board, when we get stuck in our own bubble, we have a very difficult time pulling ourselves out of it to see from an observational point of view. So there are two ways that, that I have found that just that really can make all the difference. One which is more accessible to, to the majority of individuals, reach out to someone that can support you, that can hold your hand and guide you in that moment. That doesn't mean that you need someone to take you with baby steps every step of the way, but rather, when I work with a new client, I will reflect back to them what they are saying to me, and then we will take that and I will help them to connect the dots of why they're going through this experience, or why they're feeling the way they are feeling, or what the core issue is. When you have someone that is reflecting it back to you in a non-judgmental and observational standpoint and perspective. So probably not a good idea to have a family member or someone that you're very close to, but rather someone that does not have an emotional connection to your personal experience. It'll give you the opportunity to, to see from a very different perspective. Oh, wow, is that what's going on? Oh, that makes sense. So when it comes to when you cannot see yourself, that is a very easy way to just kind of click the light bulb over your head is for someone to reflect you back to yourself. The second way that I have found that has been extremely supportive in helping an individual to literally get outside of your own head is to get outside of your comfort zone. go somewhere, spend a couple of days away from any anything that you are familiar with. Go take a trip somewhere. Find a place to go. Sleep outside of your home for a couple of nights. Do something different. Break the pattern of the monogamy of your life. Because when you are expecting your life to to behave normally, you're going to see within that fishbowl of your normal experience. The moment that you step out of your own normal, your ego mind is no longer able to hold the control over the situation. Rather, you're able to break through ego and see on a deeper version of yourself by experiencing the world through a new experience. Um, and that is a fairly immediate way for you to be able to, to see within yourself, so long as you're making the choice to consciously reflect and to heal while you are in a different situation.

00:14:36 Shreya: I think what I'm hearing is that the root is often something much older and quieter than whatever triggered the crisis. And I think that the work of healing requires going towards the underneath rather than the just managing what is visible.

00:14:54 Safra Turner: Absolutely. So generally speaking, in the first conversation that I have with new clients, what we do is without. They don't even need to tell me what is going on in this very moment. The first question I ask them is, tell me in your words, your version. Tell me the story of your life. Whatever they share, which you know, sometimes they'll start it at a young, young age. Sometimes they'll start forward and move backwards. Sometimes they'll share the various traumas, um, or earthquake moments of their lifetime. Whatever information they are sharing with me is telling me that on their own subconscious level, These are what are creating that issue or that cycle that they are dealing with. Generally speaking, almost always actually, you are going to see that they come together, uh, in some way. So for example, if somebody had a childhood that was, uh, very abusive, they're probably going to find themselves in situations where they feel like a victim. They feel like they are constantly under attack or they feel very worthless or very small. That might play out in work, that might play out in relationships, that might play out as they're walking down the street and something happens. I don't know, they trip and they're like, oh, I'm so worthless. I couldn't even pay attention. However, it plays out when the client is sharing their story. What they are really sharing is a map of what is creating the experience of the perspective that they have in the world. Once we see that map, the the path to the healing process becomes very clear because then you can see exactly what it is that is the core of the issue that you're dealing with, that you had that an abusive childhood. Okay. So let's begin to heal you first, connecting you back to yourself, back to the inner child. Let's heal that inner child within yourself, and let's teach you how to love yourself again so that you can allow yourself to be worthy of a good life, which you should, should have had from the beginning. Every time a client or an individual takes the time to map out the story of what is important in their life story, you can find the path. It's just taking the time to do it.

00:17:12 Shreya: And also, you work with frameworks rooted in universal law and consciousness and natural therapeutics. So like, without getting too technical, I'd love to understand what is one practical or reflective practice that someone sitting with darkness right now could actually begin with, like something grounded, something accessible.

00:17:34 Safra Turner: Yes. So, so I'm actually one of the things that I find that is extraordinarily helpful in pulling us out of that bubble and feeling loved again is to under universal law. There, there is the idea of, of source or one or energy, whatever that means. So when it comes to us in these really, really difficult moments, I believe in taking just a few minutes to sit down, take a few deep breaths and center yourself, and then do a visualization exercise where you pull your consciousness above your body, and then you pull it further back so that you're looking down at yourself, and then you're looking down at your house, looking down at your town, looking down at your city, looking at the world, pulling yourself further and further back, pulling yourself back out of the solar system, pulling yourself back out of the galaxy until you find your consciousness, as I like to say, in the lap of source in that space. When you look back at the world, you can't even see it. It's not even a I mean, you can't even see it because you're so far separated from that bubble that you were stuck within. And in that space of being, quote unquote, in that lap of source, in the energy of all that is, you are offered to be held. You are in a state where there is no good or bad. You are simply balanced in, in, I would say, a state of love. It helps to balance your brain, your brain waves even by stepping your mind away from the moment and out, out, out beyond the universe and into the lap of source. And once you feel better, bring yourself back into your body. Open your eyes and continue your day. It's a simple and highly effective exercise.

00:19:29 Shreya: Thank you for sharing this. I think there is something I love about that, that emphasis on gentleness and on meeting yourself that you actually are not where you think you should be. And saffron healing isn't a straight line. Always. Most people know that intellectually, but when a setback comes, when the darkness returns after a period of light, it can feel like proof that none of it worked. So how do you help someone stay in it when that happens?

00:19:58 Safra Turner: Ah, so that's the million dollar question, isn't it? So we have something again. Another rule for all of us is, first of all, when you fall in your mind, when you feel like you've fallen, be easy on yourself. Love yourself enough to allow yourself to feel the emotions of that moment. I fell, okay? You fell. Let yourself feel. Let yourself even get angry or rage if that's what you need to do. If you need a few days in that space, be in that space for a little bit. But when you are ready, the rule is get back up. You're allowed to fall. You're allowed to feel it's a part of the healing process. Every single time that we fall and get back up again, we are closer to our healing goals. We are closer to being back in tune or or in in alignment with ourself again. But we have to go through the process. Universal law says everything in cycles. What goes up comes down and it goes back up again. And if you can remember that, then when you fall into those lower moments and you're just like, oh, this is not working, recognize, become aware. It is working. That's why you have the opportunity to take that experience it. And when you're ready, you move back up again into a even closer to a more balanced state. And at some point, you will find if you continue that process of allowing yourself to get back up, of being easy on yourself as you go through those moments, allowing yourself to feel when you need to feel, you're going to find that those lows are not going to be so low anymore. The highs are going to balance out, and you're going to find yourself more and more in a state of connectedness to self. But it takes time and it is a cycle.

00:21:45 Shreya: I think that distinction between a setback and a regression between the spiritual that is taking you back and the one that is taking you deeper. That is something worth sitting with. And thank you for sharing so much of your insights, your experiences, your knowledge with us. And, uh, this is so, so helpful conversation, I think. And if after this, my listeners want to connect with you and want to know more about your work about you, uh, so where can they connect with you?

00:22:14 Safra Turner: Absolutely. So first of all, we have a very powerful website. Um, once you register into the website, you have access to free courses, free books, and free articles to support you on your path in every aspect of your holistic journey of healing. That's first and foremost. So that's holistic dot com. And then of course, I'm also I publish articles on Substack. Um, it's Safra the healer on Substack. These are two of the best ways to, to be in touch with me. And if you reach out, I will always respond.

00:22:47 Shreya: Yes. And I will definitely make sure to attach all these details and links below so that the listeners can find them easily and get in touch with you. And thank you, Safra, for sitting in this conversation with so much honesty and care.
