Speaker:of building a business is
Speaker:a mix of dreams, grit, and
Speaker:let's face it, a constant
Speaker:need for resources.

Speaker:that there's free money
Speaker:available out there

Speaker:Free money.
Speaker:Today, we're diving into
Speaker:a must listen conversation
Speaker:about business grants
Speaker:for small business
Speaker:owners and founders.
Speaker:Grants can be
Speaker:a game changer.
Speaker:Governments and
Speaker:organizations across the
Speaker:globe offer grants to
Speaker:support innovation, growth,
Speaker:and community impact.
Speaker:But here's the catch.
Speaker:Many of us don't know
Speaker:where to look, how to
Speaker:find these opportunities,
Speaker:Or even how to craft a
Speaker:compelling application.
Speaker:That's why I'm excited
Speaker:to have Liz Fleming
Speaker:on the show today.
Speaker:Liz is an expert in
Speaker:navigating the maze
Speaker:of grants and funding
Speaker:options, and she's here
Speaker:to guide us through the
Speaker:ins and outs of accessing
Speaker:this financial lifeline.
Speaker:In this episode,
Speaker:we'll explore how to
Speaker:uncover hidden grant
Speaker:opportunities, Demystify
Speaker:the application process
Speaker:and most importantly,
Speaker:discuss why tapping into
Speaker:these resources can be
Speaker:the key to accelerating
Speaker:your business growth.
Speaker:We'll also share real
Speaker:stories and practical tips
Speaker:so that by the end of our
Speaker:conversation, you'll be
Speaker:armed with the knowledge
Speaker:and inspiration you need
Speaker:to seek out and secure
Speaker:grants for your business.
Speaker:So if you're ready to
Speaker:discover a new avenue
Speaker:for funding that could
Speaker:take your business to
Speaker:the next level, make sure
Speaker:to stick around because
Speaker:trust me, this episode
Speaker:could open doors that you
Speaker:didn't even know existed.
Speaker:So let's dive in.
Speaker:Good morning, Liz.
Speaker:How are you?
Speaker:So wonderful to have you
Speaker:on my podcast this morning.
Speaker:I'm great.
Speaker:Thanks Janine for
Speaker:having me here.
Speaker:I'm excited to be
Speaker:talking with you today.
Speaker:Well, I'm just super
Speaker:excited to share your
Speaker:thought leadership
Speaker:and genius with
Speaker:the wider world.
Speaker:you are such a important
Speaker:part of my Elevate
Speaker:community and I want to
Speaker:say thank you first up
Speaker:for your intentionality
Speaker:around giving and
Speaker:supporting others.
Speaker:The way that you show up,
Speaker:the way that you provide
Speaker:support to people in our
Speaker:community and the help
Speaker:that you give of navigating
Speaker:the world of grants.
Speaker:I'm seeing and
Speaker:I'm noticing.
Speaker:So thank you for
Speaker:showing up, being
Speaker:you and constantly
Speaker:being in service.
Speaker:It's exactly the sort of
Speaker:people I love working with.
Speaker:You're amazing.
Speaker:Oh, thank you.
Speaker:That's very kind.
Speaker:And I do love the
Speaker:Elevate community
Speaker:and the connections.
Speaker:And yeah, as you say,
Speaker:I do just love helping
Speaker:people to find grants
Speaker:because not enough
Speaker:people know about them.
Speaker:Well, that's what we're
Speaker:talking about today.
Speaker:Um, because you run a
Speaker:session for me and the
Speaker:mic drop moments, the ahas
Speaker:that, oh, my goodness,
Speaker:I didn't realize that
Speaker:that came out of the
Speaker:session that you run
Speaker:just blew me away at the
Speaker:end of that, that time.
Speaker:And the amount of feedback
Speaker:that I got was phenomenal.
Speaker:And I know that my little
Speaker:ecosystem is such a
Speaker:tiny blip the universe.
Speaker:compared to how many
Speaker:business owners are out
Speaker:there that could get some
Speaker:real, uh, insight and
Speaker:value from hearing, what
Speaker:is your passion piece,
Speaker:which is, is grants.
Speaker:So that's why we're here.
Speaker:We're going to spend
Speaker:this morning talking
Speaker:all about grants.
Speaker:let's kick it straight off.
Speaker:Um, you know, this is
Speaker:something that you are
Speaker:really passionate about.
Speaker:You live and breathe it.
Speaker:your name pops
Speaker:up on so many.
Speaker:Social media as the
Speaker:recommended guru of
Speaker:all things grants
Speaker:your perspective,
Speaker:Liz, why are grants
Speaker:something that people
Speaker:should start exploring
Speaker:and even considering
Speaker:as part of their
Speaker:business growth plans?
Speaker:I think with grants, I
Speaker:think they're a bonus.
Speaker:The governments at
Speaker:all levels, council,
Speaker:state and federal have
Speaker:money to give away.
Speaker:It's our taxpayers money
Speaker:it's my philosophy that
Speaker:if we're eligible and
Speaker:there's always eligibility
Speaker:criteria and application
Speaker:forms to fill out.
Speaker:Then we need to be
Speaker:in the charts for the
Speaker:approval to get that
Speaker:money in our bank account.
Speaker:And this all started
Speaker:when I did a couple of
Speaker:stints in government a
Speaker:few years ago and was just
Speaker:blown away that there's
Speaker:grants even existed.
Speaker:I think we go into
Speaker:business using our own
Speaker:savings, and we think,
Speaker:Oh, the government's
Speaker:not going to help us.
Speaker:We're a private business.
Speaker:Um, and that's where
Speaker:people, get it wrong,
Speaker:where there are lots
Speaker:of opportunities and
Speaker:that's across community
Speaker:groups, sporting clubs.
Speaker:businesses, not
Speaker:for profits.
Speaker:Um, there's more than 2,
Speaker:000 grants out there in
Speaker:Australia at any one time.
Speaker:That doesn't mean to say
Speaker:that you're eligible for
Speaker:all of them, but let's
Speaker:try and look and see
Speaker:if there's at least one
Speaker:that we can apply for.
Speaker:Um, but yeah, they're
Speaker:to be deemed as a bonus.
Speaker:to fast tracks and
Speaker:projects and to have
Speaker:a greater impact on
Speaker:the world as well.
Speaker:So your point there,
Speaker:around the fact that
Speaker:the government here in
Speaker:Australia is actually
Speaker:making funds accessible
Speaker:through grants that
Speaker:businesses can apply
Speaker:for, as you said, they're
Speaker:not always going to get
Speaker:them, but fundamentally
Speaker:there is money out there
Speaker:that we, as business
Speaker:owners can apply for to
Speaker:support our businesses.
Speaker:Can you just share.
Speaker:a little bit more about
Speaker:what some of those
Speaker:grants can be used for.
Speaker:What have you noticed
Speaker:in the last sort of few
Speaker:months in terms of the
Speaker:categories of availability?
Speaker:Yeah, so we've got to think
Speaker:about what the government
Speaker:priorities are and what
Speaker:they're trying to achieve.
Speaker:Essentially grants are
Speaker:being outsourced by
Speaker:the government to do
Speaker:projects on their behalf.
Speaker:They're saying rightio.
Speaker:Other organizations are
Speaker:better and more efficient
Speaker:at doing these projects
Speaker:and getting a wider
Speaker:reach across Australia,
Speaker:across the area that
Speaker:they're trying to target.
Speaker:But in terms of categories,
Speaker:energy efficiency
Speaker:is a massive one.
Speaker:I've just had eight
Speaker:clients all get their
Speaker:25, 000 grants for
Speaker:energy efficiencies.
Speaker:And for all of those
Speaker:businesses across
Speaker:Australia, they were
Speaker:absolute game changers.
Speaker:Um, there were 1, 700
Speaker:businesses, approved
Speaker:for that particular
Speaker:program, that was one
Speaker:of their priorities,
Speaker:and they've, they've
Speaker:followed through with it.
Speaker:So for the government,
Speaker:grants are an easy way
Speaker:to get everyone else to
Speaker:do the work for them,
Speaker:and all they have to do
Speaker:is hand out the money.
Speaker:But, so energy efficiency,
Speaker:sustainability, workforce,
Speaker:obviously mental health
Speaker:and social belonging
Speaker:are probably the key.
Speaker:categories at the moment,
Speaker:um, but in saying that
Speaker:though, if you look
Speaker:for a grant, there
Speaker:will be one somewhere.
Speaker:Um, we just have to get
Speaker:smart about what we're
Speaker:looking for, what kind of
Speaker:themes and opportunities
Speaker:are within our business.
Speaker:And that's what I
Speaker:help people with in
Speaker:terms of the strategy.
Speaker:You might have a project
Speaker:that you want to do or,
Speaker:or, Um, expand on something
Speaker:you're already doing and
Speaker:you might think that,
Speaker:Oh, well, there's never
Speaker:going to be a grant for
Speaker:that particular project.
Speaker:There's probably
Speaker:not, but what does
Speaker:that project bring?
Speaker:What does it achieve
Speaker:and what objectives
Speaker:does it cover off?
Speaker:That's what we need to
Speaker:start thinking about.
Speaker:And I promise you every
Speaker:single project that you
Speaker:come up with, if it's a
Speaker:growth project, we'll have
Speaker:at least five to seven.
Speaker:themes or categories
Speaker:that we can start
Speaker:looking for grants for.
Speaker:And that's what blows
Speaker:people's minds that
Speaker:they start thinking
Speaker:differently about it.
Speaker:So for example, I
Speaker:use a simple example
Speaker:of a yoga workshop.
Speaker:There's never going to be
Speaker:a grant that says we want
Speaker:to run yoga workshops.
Speaker:But what does that
Speaker:yoga workshop bring?
Speaker:It brings social
Speaker:belonging, community,
Speaker:health, exercise,
Speaker:sports and recreation,
Speaker:all of those things.
Speaker:And they're the
Speaker:types of grants that
Speaker:we'd be looking for.
Speaker:And you're going to
Speaker:be using the vehicle
Speaker:of your project of
Speaker:The yoga workshop
Speaker:as your application.
Speaker:That's amazing.
Speaker:I'm imagining there's grass
Speaker:that people can access for
Speaker:technology or improvements
Speaker:in their business.
Speaker:I saw you pop into our
Speaker:group this morning, an
Speaker:opportunity that Queensland
Speaker:at the moment, where
Speaker:people can apply for a
Speaker:grant to support their
Speaker:professional development.
Speaker:So, it's anything,
Speaker:any project that
Speaker:fundamentally is about
Speaker:growth of some kind.
Speaker:If you can put in the
Speaker:time and effort, there
Speaker:is likely to be something
Speaker:somewhere that you
Speaker:might be able to access.
Speaker:Is that right?
Speaker:Correct.
Speaker:Absolutely.
Speaker:And if it's not through
Speaker:your organization on
Speaker:your own, you need to
Speaker:think about who can
Speaker:you collaborate with?
Speaker:Um, as I said earlier,
Speaker:all grants have the
Speaker:eligibility, some grant
Speaker:programs, only not
Speaker:for profits can apply
Speaker:for example, but you
Speaker:might have a project
Speaker:that fits beautifully
Speaker:to the eligibility for
Speaker:the project part of it.
Speaker:Um, So go and team up
Speaker:with a not for profit, go
Speaker:and offer your services
Speaker:to them and, and do
Speaker:a joint application.
Speaker:so that's the type of
Speaker:opportunity and strategic
Speaker:thinking that we need to
Speaker:get into, um, at the same
Speaker:time, the funding pool, uh,
Speaker:of funds is diminishing and
Speaker:the number of businesses
Speaker:and applicants is
Speaker:increasing, so it's getting
Speaker:more competitive and you
Speaker:only get one chance, just
Speaker:like an exam, to showcase
Speaker:your project in plain text.
Speaker:And normally in about
Speaker:300 words, so that's
Speaker:also the art of it.
Speaker:You might have a amazing
Speaker:project and I've got a
Speaker:grant that I'm actually
Speaker:applying for at the moment.
Speaker:And I've got to write
Speaker:about 600 words for
Speaker:the entire project.
Speaker:I've got about 20
Speaker:pages of brainstorming.
Speaker:So now I have the task of
Speaker:distilling that down to
Speaker:the four questions of only
Speaker:150 words per question.
Speaker:And that's the only
Speaker:words I can include in
Speaker:that application and
Speaker:no other attachments.
Speaker:You see, that I think
Speaker:is where the hard work
Speaker:comes in, isn't it?
Speaker:You mentioned a couple
Speaker:of times there that
Speaker:there's a strategic way of
Speaker:applying for these grants.
Speaker:Before we get into
Speaker:that, um, can we just
Speaker:go back a step and talk
Speaker:about what are some of
Speaker:the biggest pitfalls?
Speaker:that you see, or what
Speaker:is stopping businesses
Speaker:from taking advantage of
Speaker:this opportunity, or even
Speaker:putting the time in to get
Speaker:curious about how can I
Speaker:get financial support from
Speaker:the government through
Speaker:grants to help my growth.
Speaker:This is a backlog, right?
Speaker:yep, that way grants you
Speaker:don't have to pay back.
Speaker:So that's a big advantage
Speaker:if you are successful.
Speaker:But the biggest
Speaker:pitfall is time.
Speaker:Grants are a long game, so
Speaker:you have to be proactive,
Speaker:you have to be thinking
Speaker:about them, you have to
Speaker:be looking for them, you
Speaker:have to know what you want.
Speaker:And as a Chartered
Speaker:Accountant, first
Speaker:thing I always say to
Speaker:everybody, I'm always
Speaker:thinking about the money.
Speaker:What are you going to
Speaker:spend the money on?
Speaker:You can have a project,
Speaker:but if there's nothing
Speaker:to spend the money on,
Speaker:what are we applying for?
Speaker:That's a big pitfall,
Speaker:but not being ready.
Speaker:And the other thing
Speaker:with grants is they
Speaker:normally open only
Speaker:for four to six weeks.
Speaker:So if you only find
Speaker:out about that grant
Speaker:on week two or three,
Speaker:you're running your
Speaker:businesses, you're
Speaker:doing everything else.
Speaker:It all just seems way
Speaker:too hard and ends up at
Speaker:the bottom of the pile.
Speaker:All of a sudden, it's
Speaker:the night before.
Speaker:It's due, those submission
Speaker:dates don't change,
Speaker:and it's too late, and
Speaker:they've just simply
Speaker:missed that opportunity.
Speaker:So it's about being on
Speaker:the lookout, but being
Speaker:prepared, having your
Speaker:financials up to date.
Speaker:That's a big one.
Speaker:Um, some grants might be
Speaker:a 50 percent matching,
Speaker:so they'll only give
Speaker:you 50 percent of your
Speaker:project, and you need to
Speaker:have those other funds.
Speaker:Uh, if you don't know
Speaker:your cash flow or your
Speaker:forecast cash flow, then
Speaker:you don't even know if
Speaker:you can apply for it.
Speaker:So that's the first thing
Speaker:we need to work out,
Speaker:whether we're eligible
Speaker:and also thinking about,
Speaker:are we set up properly?
Speaker:Have we got our business
Speaker:set up in the right?
Speaker:entity?
Speaker:Are we registered
Speaker:for GST in Australia?
Speaker:If you're in business, you
Speaker:need to be registered for
Speaker:GST because you will just
Speaker:miss out on the opportunity
Speaker:to apply for grants.
Speaker:In the first instance.
Speaker:So there's all these
Speaker:little things that add up.
Speaker:but I always talk about
Speaker:being grant ready and
Speaker:starting on that process
Speaker:of getting your ducks
Speaker:in a row so that when
Speaker:that perfect grant
Speaker:program comes out, you're
Speaker:ready to apply for it.
Speaker:And you can do a really
Speaker:sound, application and
Speaker:the other thing is, is
Speaker:making sure that you are
Speaker:relationship building.
Speaker:So most of my grant
Speaker:applications, we're going
Speaker:to attach what's called
Speaker:a letter of support from,
Speaker:other businesses that
Speaker:we're working with or
Speaker:other communities that
Speaker:are going to benefit
Speaker:from this project.
Speaker:And if you haven't created
Speaker:those relationships,
Speaker:it's way too hard to
Speaker:bring them up the night
Speaker:before and say, Hey, this
Speaker:project would be great.
Speaker:You're going to
Speaker:benefit from it.
Speaker:Can you please write
Speaker:me a letter of support,
Speaker:but it's due tomorrow?
Speaker:They're just
Speaker:going to say no.
Speaker:So we need to be prepared
Speaker:and we need to be thinking
Speaker:about what type of grants
Speaker:we can apply for, who we
Speaker:are going to involve and
Speaker:how are we going to do it.
Speaker:how do I actually find out?
Speaker:What grants are available?
Speaker:You mentioned, just now
Speaker:that sometimes it pops up
Speaker:and you've got two weeks
Speaker:notice and I'm imagining
Speaker:that's when people go,
Speaker:Oh, it's all too hard.
Speaker:what advice would you give
Speaker:to people to essentially
Speaker:increase their awareness of
Speaker:what's actually out there?
Speaker:How do we find
Speaker:out about grants?
Speaker:grants as they come up,
Speaker:um, so that we can start
Speaker:increasing our awareness of
Speaker:the opportunities out there
Speaker:for us to apply for grants.
Speaker:I would sign up to all
Speaker:the newsletters from
Speaker:your local council, from
Speaker:your state government,
Speaker:any grant providers that
Speaker:you are aware of, go
Speaker:onto their website, sign
Speaker:up to their newsletter.
Speaker:I know we don't want a
Speaker:jammed up email box, but
Speaker:these ones are important
Speaker:because Quite often the
Speaker:governments will send out
Speaker:one email and one social
Speaker:media post and that is it.
Speaker:They do not
Speaker:advertise the grant.
Speaker:they're not readily
Speaker:there Um, we need to
Speaker:be looking for them
Speaker:at being proactive.
Speaker:There are search engines,
Speaker:search directories,
Speaker:such as the grants.
Speaker:Which is a paid directory,
Speaker:uh, that you can sign
Speaker:up to, and you can
Speaker:create your own alerts
Speaker:for certain grants and
Speaker:certain categories.
Speaker:and that's actually also
Speaker:a service that I offer
Speaker:where you can outsource
Speaker:that to us And we can be
Speaker:doing that searching for
Speaker:you as the starting point.
Speaker:Because as you say, if we
Speaker:don't know where to look
Speaker:and we don't know where
Speaker:to find them, we can't
Speaker:apply for any grants.
Speaker:So we need to start
Speaker:from the beginning.
Speaker:And we also need to be
Speaker:looking and talking to
Speaker:other business owners
Speaker:about, you know, if you
Speaker:notice that someone's had
Speaker:a big development, ask
Speaker:them, how did they fund it?
Speaker:What grant was it?
Speaker:You know, go and look
Speaker:it up, go and look up
Speaker:those past projects.
Speaker:And I promise you, if
Speaker:you start thinking about
Speaker:grants, Something will
Speaker:come up reasonably quickly.
Speaker:and if you're starting
Speaker:to plan what you're
Speaker:wanting, uh, you'll find
Speaker:what you're looking for.
Speaker:I do remember you talking,
Speaker:about the fact that
Speaker:the location of your
Speaker:business, the need or
Speaker:requirement around that
Speaker:has evolved quite a lot
Speaker:since the, uh, pandemic.
Speaker:Can you maybe talk to
Speaker:that for, for a couple of
Speaker:minutes in terms of that?
Speaker:That location, um,
Speaker:you know, the thinking
Speaker:used to be I'm residing
Speaker:here or my business
Speaker:is registered here.
Speaker:Therefore, I must,
Speaker:or I'm only able
Speaker:to apply for grants
Speaker:where I'm registered.
Speaker:you were saying recently
Speaker:that that's evolved
Speaker:since
Speaker:It has.
Speaker:Yeah, definitely.
Speaker:And today, as you say
Speaker:that Queensland grants
Speaker:come out and they've
Speaker:been very specific that
Speaker:to be eligible, you
Speaker:have to be headquartered
Speaker:in Queensland.
Speaker:So we've all got a
Speaker:business registered.
Speaker:We've got our ABN
Speaker:registered with a postcode.
Speaker:That is where you
Speaker:are registered.
Speaker:You can only have
Speaker:one of those.
Speaker:So you're probably
Speaker:thinking, well, hang
Speaker:on, I operate in 20
Speaker:different areas, five
Speaker:different states,
Speaker:but I've only got one
Speaker:company and that's fine.
Speaker:Some people would, might
Speaker:tell you and be careful
Speaker:here, go and register
Speaker:a business in every
Speaker:different or territory.
Speaker:Don't go and do that.
Speaker:But you do have
Speaker:to be careful.
Speaker:So some grants will
Speaker:say it is on your
Speaker:postcode of your ABN.
Speaker:And unfortunately
Speaker:there's nothing we
Speaker:can do about that.
Speaker:So again, be strategic
Speaker:about where you
Speaker:register your business.
Speaker:Where is most of
Speaker:your work done?
Speaker:If you were living in
Speaker:a country town or, and
Speaker:now you live somewhere
Speaker:else, go and change it.
Speaker:Go and change it.
Speaker:Take that five
Speaker:minutes to change it.
Speaker:And the other thing
Speaker:that the grants programs
Speaker:have done is now they've
Speaker:said as long as you
Speaker:operate in a location.
Speaker:So remember you'll be
Speaker:registered in one postcode,
Speaker:but if you can say we
Speaker:operate in this other
Speaker:location, then the councils
Speaker:will allow you to apply
Speaker:for those during COVID.
Speaker:So many people missed
Speaker:out on so much stuff
Speaker:because they were
Speaker:multiple locations and the
Speaker:governments were simply
Speaker:saying, no, whatever
Speaker:your postcode is on your
Speaker:IBM, that's the only
Speaker:place you can apply.
Speaker:So that's how it's evolved,
Speaker:which is great because
Speaker:they were missing out.
Speaker:There were people locally
Speaker:operated because they're
Speaker:only registered once.
Speaker:And that doesn't change
Speaker:and that's correct.
Speaker:Then we need to be able
Speaker:to, um, be aware of that.
Speaker:And again, be able to
Speaker:know how to read the
Speaker:eligibility criteria and
Speaker:what are they asking for?
Speaker:So Queensland, you could
Speaker:be registered somewhere
Speaker:different for this
Speaker:particular grant, but if
Speaker:you can prove you've got a
Speaker:headquarters in Queensland,
Speaker:then you can apply.
Speaker:And the other thing
Speaker:is, remember with the
Speaker:eligibility, they're
Speaker:trying to catch people out.
Speaker:They want as least people
Speaker:as possible to apply
Speaker:because they know it's
Speaker:going to be oversubscribed
Speaker:without them trying.
Speaker:So they put in all these
Speaker:finicky little requirements
Speaker:and we need to make sure
Speaker:that we match them all.
Speaker:I had one client recently
Speaker:where she'd read the 30
Speaker:pages of the guidelines
Speaker:and I was thinking, I don't
Speaker:think you're eligible.
Speaker:And she'd picked out one
Speaker:line on about page four.
Speaker:She's like, Oh,
Speaker:but I've got that.
Speaker:I said, yes, but
Speaker:you don't have the
Speaker:proceeding requirements
Speaker:on page two and three.
Speaker:So you just have to
Speaker:be really careful.
Speaker:And that catches
Speaker:people out.
Speaker:I've had no of people that
Speaker:have applied for grants.
Speaker:They were a winery.
Speaker:This particular grant said
Speaker:wineries cannot apply.
Speaker:Actually said that.
Speaker:And they still put
Speaker:an application in.
Speaker:And then wondered why
Speaker:they got rejected on day
Speaker:one after they said that.
Speaker:So that's what
Speaker:I'm here for.
Speaker:I'm happy to chat to anyone
Speaker:about eligibility because
Speaker:that is the first tick.
Speaker:If you're not
Speaker:eligible, you're just
Speaker:wasting your time.
Speaker:Forget about it.
Speaker:Move on, find something
Speaker:that's more relevant
Speaker:and that you can
Speaker:actually apply for.
Speaker:But yeah, the location and
Speaker:actually thinking about,
Speaker:How can you justify how you
Speaker:operate in that location?
Speaker:So yes, I've got clients
Speaker:all over Australia that I
Speaker:work remotely online with,
Speaker:but I would never say that
Speaker:I actually operate in any
Speaker:other areas apart from
Speaker:Melbourne and Queensland.
Speaker:So just think about that
Speaker:of how you could write
Speaker:it in an application to
Speaker:say, this is why I think
Speaker:I operate in X, Y, Z area.
Speaker:I hope my listeners
Speaker:can pick up on your
Speaker:passion on this.
Speaker:And I think, um, you
Speaker:know, one of the things
Speaker:I know about you, you
Speaker:are absolutely passionate
Speaker:around helping businesses
Speaker:access these funds.
Speaker:It gets you, it's
Speaker:the thing that I know
Speaker:gets you out of bed.
Speaker:It's a thing that, uh,
Speaker:gets you on the phone at
Speaker:crazy hours of the day.
Speaker:It's the thing that,
Speaker:you know, it's the thing
Speaker:that gets you That I know
Speaker:keeps you up at night
Speaker:as you're determined to
Speaker:try and get these grants
Speaker:approved for businesses.
Speaker:As you said earlier,
Speaker:there's money available
Speaker:and businesses, which
Speaker:are the lifeblood of
Speaker:our economy, are missing
Speaker:out on the funds that
Speaker:could potentially help
Speaker:them, uh, employ people.
Speaker:put in place new business
Speaker:initiatives, get the
Speaker:training they want,
Speaker:invest in technology,
Speaker:whatever it is.
Speaker:This is, this is what
Speaker:gets you out of bed.
Speaker:So I've what would you say?
Speaker:Do you know what your
Speaker:win
Speaker:Yeah, my win rate's 85%.
Speaker:Look at that.
Speaker:85%.
Speaker:So
Speaker:out
Speaker:And 100 percent
Speaker:submitted on time.
Speaker:Look at that.
Speaker:That's amazing.
Speaker:Cause as you're talking,
Speaker:I'm going, Oh my God,
Speaker:that sounds like too
Speaker:much light hard work
Speaker:applying for those.
Speaker:which is why we engage
Speaker:people like you.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:Um, what's your
Speaker:favorite win?
Speaker:What's your favorite?
Speaker:The one that makes your
Speaker:heart sing that you went,
Speaker:Oh my God, gosh, thank
Speaker:goodness we did that.
Speaker:Oh, I mean, there's been
Speaker:so many and I have worked
Speaker:across, you know, sports
Speaker:clubs, um, businesses, not
Speaker:for profits, but I think
Speaker:recently the eight clients
Speaker:that we applied for the
Speaker:energy efficiency grants,
Speaker:simply because I sat there
Speaker:for two whole days pressing
Speaker:refresh on the website
Speaker:because the system crashed.
Speaker:And I had to, I got my
Speaker:clients to apply for
Speaker:them and do submission.
Speaker:But a couple of them
Speaker:I did myself and they
Speaker:were, everyone was
Speaker:texting me saying, can't
Speaker:get in, it's crashed.
Speaker:I'm like, keep going.
Speaker:And we got them all in
Speaker:through that perseverance.
Speaker:And I truly didn't
Speaker:think that we'd get
Speaker:them all approved.
Speaker:So that day, a few weeks
Speaker:ago, when I started
Speaker:getting the texts.
Speaker:We've got it.
Speaker:Thank you.
Speaker:And they didn't even
Speaker:say what I knew what
Speaker:they were talking about.
Speaker:And then they all
Speaker:came through and
Speaker:ate out of eight.
Speaker:So, you know, that was a
Speaker:25, 000 energy efficiency
Speaker:grant for new ecom systems
Speaker:and a cafe and a office
Speaker:and a um, on a farm and one
Speaker:was for a pool filtration
Speaker:for a swim school and
Speaker:that 25, 000 is a game
Speaker:changer because that is
Speaker:going to not only increase
Speaker:the efficiencies of the
Speaker:energy bills so decrease
Speaker:their costs but also it
Speaker:elevated one of them sold
Speaker:their business recently
Speaker:and that was the reason
Speaker:behind because they had all
Speaker:the infrastructure there.
Speaker:so, you know, you would
Speaker:say, well, 25 grand, I was
Speaker:going to spend it anyway.
Speaker:Well, a lot of these
Speaker:businesses have
Speaker:struggled through COVID.
Speaker:A lot of these businesses
Speaker:I've worked with for years,
Speaker:they're still hanging on
Speaker:and it's just given them
Speaker:the boost to keep going.
Speaker:And that's why I truly
Speaker:do it because that 25
Speaker:grand has made such
Speaker:a big difference to
Speaker:them, as opposed to a
Speaker:government agency or a
Speaker:not for profit getting a
Speaker:million dollar program.
Speaker:Like they're great.
Speaker:Don't get me wrong, but.
Speaker:To me, small business,
Speaker:most of them were also
Speaker:regional, and so I've
Speaker:been able to have a,
Speaker:you know, to have that.
Speaker:perseverance, the
Speaker:government delayed the
Speaker:announcement by two
Speaker:months, um, they were
Speaker:hanging on, I was getting
Speaker:texts every now and again
Speaker:saying, have you heard?
Speaker:And I'm like, no, um,
Speaker:but yeah, to get eight
Speaker:out of eight, I think
Speaker:I surprised myself.
Speaker:And the equipment grants,
Speaker:I think, are probably my
Speaker:favorite because they're a
Speaker:bit more black and white.
Speaker:You've got the quote for
Speaker:whatever you're going
Speaker:to get, and then you can
Speaker:tell the story of how
Speaker:this is going to have the
Speaker:impact for that business.
Speaker:Congratulations.
Speaker:That's just awesome.
Speaker:And as you said, generally
Speaker:you don't have to
Speaker:pay it back the cash.
Speaker:no, no.
Speaker:With grants, you don't
Speaker:pay it back at all.
Speaker:So, um, unless, I will
Speaker:say, unless you don't do
Speaker:what you, what you said
Speaker:you were going to do, then
Speaker:you do have to pay it back.
Speaker:Um, and there's always
Speaker:a little bit of wriggle
Speaker:room as well in that
Speaker:once we've got it.
Speaker:And I think that's the
Speaker:other thing that I sort
Speaker:of forget that I do.
Speaker:I do that advocacy.
Speaker:I will contact the
Speaker:providers and it's much
Speaker:easier to say, oh, my
Speaker:client is asking this.
Speaker:Um, and I've had non
Speaker:responses from government
Speaker:agencies when the
Speaker:client has rung up and
Speaker:tried to contact them.
Speaker:They just haven't got back.
Speaker:Um, whereas they then
Speaker:recognize that they're
Speaker:paying a consultant
Speaker:to help them and so
Speaker:I get a response.
Speaker:So it's all those
Speaker:other little things.
Speaker:Um, and also where people
Speaker:are like, Oh, maybe
Speaker:we could add this in.
Speaker:And they're like,
Speaker:Oh, I'm not sure.
Speaker:And I'm like, Yeah.
Speaker:let's do it.
Speaker:You know?
Speaker:And I think the other
Speaker:thing is, um, is
Speaker:Till Bobby Syndrome.
Speaker:We are so bad at
Speaker:writing about ourselves
Speaker:in a positive light.
Speaker:So I write grants in
Speaker:a really positive way
Speaker:that we're going to get
Speaker:them and that it's going
Speaker:to have that impact
Speaker:and we make sure we
Speaker:include all the great
Speaker:things that we've done.
Speaker:And I think I have that
Speaker:ability to be able to
Speaker:extract that from people
Speaker:to say, Hey, you tell
Speaker:me what you've done.
Speaker:They'll give me a couple
Speaker:of sentences, and I will
Speaker:build that out to the 500
Speaker:words or whatever it is,
Speaker:and if there's a 300 word
Speaker:limit, I will use 299 of
Speaker:it to showcase, um, so
Speaker:we can stand out, and get
Speaker:that big tick, and get that
Speaker:money in our bank account.
Speaker:So this is essentially what
Speaker:you do to help businesses.
Speaker:Um, as I said,
Speaker:it's your passion.
Speaker:You've talked about
Speaker:being able to proactively
Speaker:look for grants.
Speaker:You've talked about
Speaker:it's important to
Speaker:be grant ready.
Speaker:And then obviously
Speaker:there's that final
Speaker:piece of submitting the
Speaker:grants and keeping on
Speaker:top of the application.
Speaker:knowing you and how you
Speaker:work, um, I know that
Speaker:this is your gift and what
Speaker:you give to your clients.
Speaker:I think there's
Speaker:so many of us.
Speaker:it's just goes in
Speaker:the hard basket too.
Speaker:Hard basket, and I think
Speaker:depending on the scale
Speaker:or size of your business,
Speaker:having the capacity in
Speaker:your team to be able to
Speaker:invest that time, the
Speaker:reality is it's often
Speaker:challenged on other things
Speaker:like getting leads and
Speaker:getting sales and managing,
Speaker:managing the business.
Speaker:So, can you just, line
Speaker:for me a little bit
Speaker:more about how you work
Speaker:and how you support?
Speaker:Because I think the
Speaker:fact that this, money
Speaker:is actually available.
Speaker:It makes absolute sense
Speaker:to me that as business
Speaker:owners looking for
Speaker:growth, we should be
Speaker:thinking strategically
Speaker:about how to access grass
Speaker:to facilitate the next
Speaker:stage in our business.
Speaker:so what support
Speaker:do you give?
Speaker:Um, essentially is
Speaker:it you do all of that
Speaker:for your clients?
Speaker:I do.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:And, uh, I basically say
Speaker:if you're thinking about
Speaker:growth and grants, just
Speaker:get in touch because every
Speaker:business is different.
Speaker:Every grant application
Speaker:is different.
Speaker:And depending on your
Speaker:skills and capability and
Speaker:time and resource, I have
Speaker:Clients that I'm doing
Speaker:the searching for the
Speaker:grants for them, and then
Speaker:when we find the grant,
Speaker:I help them write it.
Speaker:I have some clients that we
Speaker:might write one grant, and
Speaker:then they've gone off and,
Speaker:and used that and written
Speaker:the rest of their grants.
Speaker:And then I have
Speaker:other clients?
Speaker:that go, Oh, that
Speaker:seemed way too easy.
Speaker:You can do it again.
Speaker:And off you go.
Speaker:One thing I will
Speaker:say with grants is
Speaker:they're an investment.
Speaker:So there's a, there's
Speaker:a long game and
Speaker:they're an investment.
Speaker:So it'll pay off over time.
Speaker:I promise you that it
Speaker:just won't be immediate.
Speaker:Uh, especially when we
Speaker:have to wait three or four
Speaker:months for the outcome,
Speaker:but like an exam, we do
Speaker:it, submit it, forget
Speaker:about it and wait for the
Speaker:approval to come through.
Speaker:And then I also help people
Speaker:develop their strategy of
Speaker:if there was a grant or
Speaker:what does your growth look
Speaker:like in your business?
Speaker:And that's probably my.
Speaker:most important
Speaker:step in there.
Speaker:If you don't know what
Speaker:you're looking for,
Speaker:don't know how you're
Speaker:going to grow your
Speaker:business and what are
Speaker:all those options, that's
Speaker:where we need to start.
Speaker:And then of course, I
Speaker:can write the grant,
Speaker:uh, for you and I
Speaker:love a good deadline.
Speaker:So as I say, a hundred
Speaker:percent, uh, submitted
Speaker:on time and we can
Speaker:also develop the
Speaker:project as we go.
Speaker:So there's some grant
Speaker:writers out there
Speaker:that they literally.
Speaker:Get people to tell them
Speaker:what their project is
Speaker:and you never see them
Speaker:for two weeks and they
Speaker:go off and write it.
Speaker:I work in a very
Speaker:collaborative style, taking
Speaker:that strategic approach
Speaker:and you might start off
Speaker:with a really basic idea
Speaker:and by the end of it it's
Speaker:turned into something
Speaker:amazing and you might have
Speaker:thought you're applying
Speaker:for a hundred thousand
Speaker:and all of a sudden we're
Speaker:applying for six hundred
Speaker:thousand because we thought
Speaker:of all these other things
Speaker:that can fit into the
Speaker:eligibility criteria.
Speaker:So, that's how I help and.
Speaker:I can help you in any
Speaker:way for grants depending
Speaker:on your budget and where
Speaker:you're at and the size
Speaker:of your business, the
Speaker:areas that you're in.
Speaker:And that's, that's why
Speaker:I do it the way I do it.
Speaker:So it's not
Speaker:just writing it.
Speaker:and also I do
Speaker:mentoring as well.
Speaker:So I'm working with an
Speaker:organization at the moment
Speaker:where we are working
Speaker:together to build their
Speaker:capability and capacity so
Speaker:that they can write their
Speaker:own grants in the future.
Speaker:So that's been a really
Speaker:fun project, um, to
Speaker:work with them as well.
Speaker:I am going to put, or
Speaker:for my listeners, anyone
Speaker:listening in that's
Speaker:interested, I'll put Liz's
Speaker:details in the show notes.
Speaker:Um, and I also know
Speaker:Liz has got a whole
Speaker:heap of resources, that
Speaker:she constantly shares.
Speaker:So, this has just been
Speaker:an awesome conversation.
Speaker:Um, The three key things
Speaker:that stick, stick out
Speaker:for me all those around,
Speaker:you know, proactively
Speaker:looking for grants.
Speaker:It's almost a level
Speaker:of responsibility that
Speaker:as business owners, we
Speaker:should be doing because
Speaker:that curiosity identifies
Speaker:opportunities that we
Speaker:can apply for the piece
Speaker:about being grant ready.
Speaker:I know is one of your
Speaker:bug bears and also huge
Speaker:opportunities because then
Speaker:you can move quickly and
Speaker:that final piece around.
Speaker:actually taking a
Speaker:strategic lens to what
Speaker:grants you apply for and
Speaker:how you go about it and
Speaker:playing that long game.
Speaker:Not just about, oh my
Speaker:god, I need to do this,
Speaker:I need cash, let's,
Speaker:is there a grant?
Speaker:But actually thinking
Speaker:strategically about
Speaker:how you're going to
Speaker:use those grants.
Speaker:my final point, anyone
Speaker:listening in here to
Speaker:think about is, uh, and
Speaker:I'm quoting you here
Speaker:Liz, you said, if there
Speaker:was a grant, what is
Speaker:the growth opportunity
Speaker:in your business?
Speaker:And I think that anyone
Speaker:listening here, I
Speaker:highly recommend you
Speaker:spend some time just
Speaker:thinking about that.
Speaker:Thinking about your
Speaker:business, thinking about
Speaker:those growth opportunities.
Speaker:Thinking about if you could
Speaker:access a grant, where is
Speaker:that growth opportunity?
Speaker:Because you know,
Speaker:you know, it could be
Speaker:building capacity in
Speaker:people, building capacity
Speaker:in your processes,
Speaker:building capacity in your
Speaker:infrastructure, building
Speaker:capacity in terms of
Speaker:new market opportunities
Speaker:or product development.
Speaker:So I really encourage
Speaker:you listening in to
Speaker:take some time to
Speaker:just think about that.
Speaker:And if you need any help,
Speaker:Liz Fleming is your girl.
Speaker:I will put her contact
Speaker:details in the show notes
Speaker:and Liz, just thank you.
Speaker:Um, your generosity exceeds
Speaker:in leaps and bounds.
Speaker:You are such a gift to
Speaker:so many business owners
Speaker:and I'm so Grateful
Speaker:that you're in my world.
Speaker:Um, thank you for letting
Speaker:me pick your brains this
Speaker:morning and sharing you
Speaker:with a wider audience.
Speaker:and thank you for
Speaker:everything you do.
Speaker:It really helps businesses
Speaker:continue to thrive
Speaker:and continue to grow.
Speaker:Thank you.
Speaker:Thanks for having me.
Speaker:And um, yeah, start
Speaker:looking for those grants.
Speaker:Thanks Liz.
