Rev Karen:

Hello and welcome to the Connectedness Podcast.

2

:

Just as you might have guessed, I talk

about connection and connectedness

3

:

on this podcast, our connection with

everything in the world around us.

4

:

Whether you see it or not, we're all

connected, and it doesn't matter if it's

5

:

our dog, our cat, our God, our body.

6

:

And I'll also talk about some more.

7

:

Abstract connections like our career or

our land, our community, our emotions,

8

:

your body, life is all about connection.

9

:

So the sooner we recognize

that, the sooner we can have an

10

:

easier, more meaningful life.

11

:

I will talk about these connections

through different lenses.

12

:

Things like synchronicities

and coincidences are just.

13

:

It's really important that we pay

attention to all of this so we can

14

:

live an easier, more meaningful life.

15

:

So welcome to the show.

16

:

I'm your host, Karen Cleveland.

17

:

Hello, everyone.

18

:

Happy New Year.

19

:

Thanks for being here.

20

:

Thanks for listening.

21

:

Yes, this is being released

nd of:

22

:

So, it's a brand new year.

23

:

And what are you going to do with it?

24

:

A lot of times, the end of the

year, Beginning of a new year.

25

:

feels like we need to make a change or

do something new or create something new.

26

:

And the fact is, every day is a new day.

27

:

We can do it anytime.

28

:

Why not now?

29

:

If you haven't done anything yet that

you want to do to create a vision

30

:

for yourself to start something

new, might as well do it now.

31

:

And actually today I'm going to talk a

little bit about creating a vision and

32

:

a little bit about what you need to do,

but also about getting out of your head.

33

:

That's one of the number one mistakes or.

34

:

Not a mistake, but 1 of the number 1

problems I see people have when they're

35

:

trying to be in touch with their dreams

and their visions and their soul is that

36

:

they can't get out of their head and

all the answers that they're coming up

37

:

with are coming straight from the mind

instead of from the heart and the soul.

38

:

So I'm going to talk a

little bit about that later.

39

:

So right now, creating

a vision for yourself.

40

:

And why do that?

41

:

You know, it's a good time to look

at how we are co creating our world.

42

:

You are the co author.

43

:

Of your life, and why not let it be

something you want to be someone that

44

:

I really admire for having a vision

and just seeing it through forever.

45

:

Her name is Dr terror.

46

:

I Trent.

47

:

And if you don't know

her, she's from Zimbabwe.

48

:

she is a very powerful example of having

a clear vision and never giving up.

49

:

So she was born into this very poor

family and rural village in Zimbabwe.

50

:

And she wanted to learn.

51

:

She didn't have the opportunity to

go to school because she was a girl.

52

:

She taught herself to read and

she started reading her brother's

53

:

school books and then eventually she

started doing his homework for him

54

:

and his grades started to improve.

55

:

They started improving so much

that the teacher was wondering what

56

:

was going on and found out it was

actually her doing the schoolwork.

57

:

So the teacher pleaded with the

father, please let her come to school.

58

:

She's very smart.

59

:

She needs to come.

60

:

So she was able to go to

school for a little while.

61

:

Until her father sold her

off to be married for a cow.

62

:

So her father got a cow.

63

:

She was young, got married,

and started having babies.

64

:

after she'd had three babies, the

village got a visit from a non

65

:

profit organization, and the woman

that came asked every woman in

66

:

the village, what are your dreams?

67

:

What do you want for yourself?

68

:

What do you, what do you see for yourself

69

:

And she wanted to, Dr.

70

:

Trent wanted to come to America,

get a college degree, get a

71

:

master's degree, and get a Ph.

72

:

D.

73

:

And so her mother encouraged her.

74

:

She said, write down your dreams,

put them in a tin can and bury them.

75

:

And she did.

76

:

Now she held on to that vision.

77

:

And eventually she was still

married to the same man.

78

:

She had five children.

79

:

She came to the United States,

went to school and got her

80

:

bachelor's she got her master's.

81

:

And then she got her Ph.

82

:

D.

83

:

and she would go back to her home,

dig up that can and mark off her

84

:

dreams every time she reached them.

85

:

And even since then, more

dreams, more vision has come.

86

:

So she's a big advocate

for women in education in

87

:

Zimbabwe and around the world.

88

:

So she's very inspiring.

89

:

What is your vision for yourself?

90

:

It doesn't have to be that big

or it probably is that big if it

91

:

were fulfilled and you started

living it to its fullest extent.

92

:

And sometimes our dreams feel like

they're as small as I just want to survive

93

:

the month and be able to pay my bills.

94

:

And that's okay.

95

:

You start where you are.

96

:

That's okay.

97

:

Shirley, Dr.

98

:

Trent, one of those same things.

99

:

And she did have a bigger vision.

100

:

So have you ever sat down and actually

thought about what that bigger

101

:

vision is for you and for your life?

102

:

And this is where it takes

getting out of our head.

103

:

Because if you can only think as far as,

Ooh, I want to make lots of money so I

104

:

don't have to work and travel the world.

105

:

And yeah, I do some volunteer work

and maybe I'd give some money to this

106

:

organization organization in that one

107

:

and that's all good when

it's coming from your heart.

108

:

It probably feels and sounds

a little bit different.

109

:

you are getting in touch with how you

actually want to make a difference.

110

:

And for Now if you've had problems

meditating, doing some kind of spiritual

111

:

practice, doing something that puts

you in touch with your heart and your

112

:

soul, then I guess this is for you.

113

:

And even if you haven't had problems

with it, this is going to be a

114

:

good reminder of checking in with

ourselves and what do we really want?

115

:

What do you really want?

116

:

If I asked you what, what is your

perfect week or perfect month look like,

117

:

and I would want you to look at it as

if you didn't have to work, whether

118

:

you're retired, whether you inherited

five million dollars, whatever it is.

119

:

So work is out of the question.

120

:

You don't even have to

think about making money.

121

:

How would you spend your time?

122

:

And that's going to be one of

the key ways that you get to

123

:

what your heart wants to do.

124

:

Once you figure out

what you're going to do.

125

:

For an entire week for an entire month

when you don't have to worry about

126

:

whatever it is that you do to make money,

you don't even have to think about it.

127

:

You don't have to write.

128

:

You don't have to make videos.

129

:

Let's pretend you don't

have to do any of that.

130

:

How do you spend your time?

131

:

Do you watch TV the whole time?

132

:

I'm guessing you probably don't.

133

:

You might for a day.

134

:

You might for two days, but for

the rest of your life, you probably

135

:

don't want to watch TV all the time.

136

:

that is something we're going to consider.

137

:

But before we actually get to that

question, how do we move from our

138

:

mind to a space of connectedness to

a space of the universal connection?

139

:

How do we do that?

140

:

There's several things

that keep us in our mind.

141

:

So there's different ideas

depending on what is keeping you

142

:

in your mind from moving down.

143

:

Let me just throw out some examples

and some possible solutions.

144

:

And if it's something that

applies to you, try it.

145

:

And if it's not something that applies to

you, then just go on to the next thing.

146

:

if I ask you to sit down and

to close your eyes and to just

147

:

sit quietly for 10 minutes.

148

:

What would happen?

149

:

Do you start going through this to do

list of items that you need to get done?

150

:

Do you start going through the shopping?

151

:

I need to buy this.

152

:

I need to buy that.

153

:

I can't forget to write

a thank you letter.

154

:

I have to get gas in the car.

155

:

I have to wash the car.

156

:

I have to feed the animals.

157

:

Okay.

158

:

Is that what your problem is?

159

:

Are you, is your brain afraid

you're going to forget everything?

160

:

And you're not going to do

everything you need to do.

161

:

So that's one kind of problem.

162

:

If your brain is too busy trying not to

forget anything, then the solution is

163

:

You literally keep a pad of paper next

to you with a pen and you write it down

164

:

and you write down whatever comes up

because once it's written on paper,

165

:

you can tell yourself it's there.

166

:

I'll pick it up when I'm done and I

don't have to worry about it right now.

167

:

Now what happens if you start doing this

is you usually stop needing to write

168

:

things down after about two or three times

because your brain realizes she's got

169

:

it covered, she's got it taken care of.

170

:

I can trust it's going to get done.

171

:

and it's kind of weird how our brain

works, that it thinks it has to be

172

:

in charge of what we think and do.

173

:

In some ways it does, of course, but if

you start writing down the list, you can

174

:

start to relax you might even be able

to get out of your head a little bit

175

:

and start to move down to your heart.

176

:

That's just step 1.

177

:

So stay with me to go through all these

different ideas and to actually figure

178

:

out how to get down into your heart.

179

:

Let me ask you the next one.

180

:

If you sit down to get

quiet for 10 minutes.

181

:

If I asked you to pay attention to

your shoulders, to your back, to your

182

:

face, are they going to feel tense?

183

:

Are you all tensed up?

184

:

That tension in all of your muscles?

185

:

It's it's a constant freeway of

information from your brain to your

186

:

muscles, the rest of your body.

187

:

And even though it's not

conscious, so you're not aware of.

188

:

Oh, I have to tense up my shoulders.

189

:

I have to make my neck really stiff.

190

:

I have to keep my back perfectly

straight or forward or sideways.

191

:

Okay.

192

:

So even though it's not

conscious, it's a working brain.

193

:

And so you do need to consciously

try to relax your muscles so

194

:

you can stop the information.

195

:

Stop that freeway.

196

:

Of keeping your brain busy.

197

:

So, literally, there's many different

reasons I use this technique.

198

:

But start with your toes.

199

:

And you can say, with your eyes

closed, thank you toes, you can relax.

200

:

Or you can check in with your toes

and tense them and then relax them.

201

:

Tense them and then just let go.

202

:

And you work your way up your entire body.

203

:

You can either thank it and

let it know it can relax.

204

:

Or you just contract the muscle

and then relax the muscle and

205

:

go through your entire body.

206

:

It, it can take, you know, 1 minute

or 5 minutes or 10 minutes, depending

207

:

on how much time you want to pay

attention to each part of your body.

208

:

if there's something that doesn't

want to relax, just kind of sit

209

:

there and focus on it and imagine

warmth and white light going to it.

210

:

And just.

211

:

Let it know you can relax and

then move on and forget about it.

212

:

it might even take two or three or

four or five sessions to sit down and

213

:

relax the body before you can sit down

and actually try to do something else.

214

:

So just start doing it though.

215

:

Start today, by Friday, Saturday,

you should be able to sit down and

216

:

get relaxed much easier than you

are the first time that you try.

217

:

there's another way that seem

to clutter up people's mind.

218

:

And it's almost so obvious

that people overlook it.

219

:

So if you sit down to get quiet,

whether it's meditating, visualizing,

220

:

or just being quiet, And you are

in a room full of junk and by junk.

221

:

I mean, clutter.

222

:

I mean, piles of papers, piles

of garbage, anything that affects

223

:

your mind being able to clear.

224

:

And you can read about this and even the

scientific journals that our surroundings,

225

:

a cluttered space, clutters our mind,

because all these objects are taking up

226

:

memory space in our head, energetic space.

227

:

things, objects, whatever they

are in our area, that their energy

228

:

takes up residence in our brain.

229

:

It really, they really do.

230

:

just imagine yourself if you've

ever walked into a clean house of

231

:

your own versus a cluttered house,

you know, before you clean it.

232

:

And after you clean it, don't you

always feel better after you clean it,

233

:

whether it's down to getting the dirt.

234

:

Stains off the floor, or if it's

just removing the extra stuff

235

:

that gets cluttered and laid

around, which happens so fast.

236

:

And so easy, whatever your perception

is of clean is clean and uncluttered.

237

:

That's how you need your space

to be when you sit down to

238

:

get quiet and to get clear.

239

:

now.

240

:

Those are three ways that that

might just automatically keep

241

:

your brain busy to start with.

242

:

So, if those don't apply to you, or you've

dealt with them already, and you're ready

243

:

to still move on you're going to sit

down and pay attention to a part of your

244

:

body without using the normal senses.

245

:

That are how you typically

receive information.

246

:

So you're not going to use sight, you're

not going to smell, you're not going

247

:

to taste, you're not going to hear.

248

:

And it's about receiving information

intuitively and feeling what you feel.

249

:

So it is going to, you

are going to feel it.

250

:

and that's not a way we often

receive information without

251

:

using all these other senses.

252

:

So here's what

253

:

I suggest you do.

254

:

Sit down in a comfortable chair,

get quiet, close your eyes, focus on

255

:

your breathing for a minute or two.

256

:

Just something to help your brain settle

down and get into the space of where

257

:

you are and not what's going on outside.

258

:

And then you're going to lift one

of your hands up away from your

259

:

body so it doesn't touch anything.

260

:

And you're going to close your eyes.

261

:

And you're going to ask yourself the

question, How do I know my hand exists?

262

:

And I believe, by the way, this

is taken from a Martha Beck book.

263

:

How do I know my hand exists?

264

:

And you are going to concentrate

on your hand and how you know it

265

:

exists without seeing it, smelling

it, tasting it, hearing it.

266

:

How do you feel it?

267

:

Now I know this might sound

backwards about how is this

268

:

going to get me into my heart?

269

:

Trust me on this.

270

:

It's about, it's not so much about

getting into your heart as it is

271

:

about getting out of your brain

and you have to feel your hand.

272

:

You can't think about your hand

because if you think about it,

273

:

you're going to remember things.

274

:

This is what it looks like.

275

:

You know, this is how it feels.

276

:

This is how it moves.

277

:

This is how it hurts.

278

:

So when you think, use your brain to

think about it, it's all past information.

279

:

It's not current information

and you need to get current

280

:

information to feel it right now.

281

:

You can also try this with your feet.

282

:

Try it with what are my

feet touching right now?

283

:

What does it feel like?

284

:

And if you're out and about, say you're

listening to this podcast, you know,

285

:

in the car, on a bicycle, on a walk,

if you're out and about and you have

286

:

to stop somewhere, if you're in line

somewhere, if you're waiting at the

287

:

drive through, whatever it is, see if

you can take a minute just to try that.

288

:

Just how can I feel my body part without

thinking about what I know about it and

289

:

what I've experienced in the past from it.

290

:

But then also when you have a moment to

close your eyes for five or ten minutes

291

:

and not disturb other people or they

disturb you actually try the exercise.

292

:

I honestly think you will be amazed

at how you feel it and how you feel

293

:

your hand in this space and time and

how it's different than when you just

294

:

take it for granted and see it and

feel it and when it touches things.

295

:

How do you know it's there?

296

:

Now, remember, Like everything,

this takes practice.

297

:

So sit down and do this once or twice

and then do different body parts.

298

:

Check in with a different body part.

299

:

How do I know it's there?

300

:

What does it feel like?

301

:

What is it feeling?

302

:

And once you can begin to realize you're

leaving all your thoughts, all your to

303

:

do lists, all the arguments from last

night or last week, everything that's

304

:

going to go on tomorrow, once you can

leave them, Aside for a moment and

305

:

concentrate on what's happening right now.

306

:

What's present.

307

:

That's when you can begin to get the

lings to feel your vision for:

308

:

2025, you know, the rest of your life.

309

:

So when you're ready, what is

the impact that you want to make?

310

:

And one way to help narrow it down, if

you want to do everything, if you want to

311

:

save the entire world, one way to start

to narrow down where your personal impact

312

:

might be, is to think about which news

stories, when I hear them or read them.

313

:

Upset me the most.

314

:

All right.

315

:

Which ones just really tear you up?

316

:

Is it the children?

317

:

Is it the women?

318

:

Is it the environment?

319

:

Is it the animals?

320

:

You know, the whales, the dolphins?

321

:

I mean, there are so many different

areas of life to choose from.

322

:

And we all are drawn to choose an

area that speaks to us so deeply, so

323

:

deeply that I believe we are here To

perhaps change the way the world

324

:

reacts to that, that thing, that cause

that person that you are drawn to.

325

:

So maybe it is you that is to

bring a new light, a new way of

326

:

experiencing something differently.

327

:

Maybe that's what you

build your vision around.

328

:

And this obviously isn't an episode

about how to create a vision.

329

:

As far as, you know, a vision

statement or a mission statement,

330

:

but it's just what is your intention?

331

:

What is your intention?

332

:

If you could do any kind of good with

the next year and you didn't have to

333

:

work for money, what would you be doing?

334

:

How would you be doing it?

335

:

Who would you be doing it with?

336

:

Where would you be doing it?

337

:

Kick that dream engine into gear.

338

:

sit down, get quiet, take those

steps to move into your heart.

339

:

And what is calling for your action?

340

:

WHat is yours to do?

341

:

I don't expect you to get

an answer the first time.

342

:

If you do, that's fantastic.

343

:

If it takes 5 times, 20 times,

35 times, that's okay too.

344

:

Isn't it better to know in 6 months

or a year than to never know?

345

:

So, better to start now.

346

:

Figuring out and creating, co

creating that vision for your life.

347

:

For the new year, whatever new

year it might be and learning how

348

:

to listen to your heart, learning

how to get into that space to

349

:

allow that information to come out.

350

:

So perhaps what I might have missed

is in, in talking about this is

351

:

once you're able to let all that go.

352

:

And once you're able to discern,

you know, what is my thing?

353

:

What is my social cause?

354

:

What upsets me the most, let's say it's

homelessness when you realize that and

355

:

you still don't know what to do, you

don't know what your next steps are.

356

:

That's perfectly normal, but begin

to look around and see what can I do.

357

:

I can't save every person on the street.

358

:

I can't feed every person on the street.

359

:

I can't donate enough money.

360

:

What's one thing I can do?

361

:

And just start small.

362

:

What is one thing I can do

for one homeless person today?

363

:

So start small and eventually,

when you're headed in the right

364

:

direction, opportunities arise.

365

:

And you know, because you'll be

checking in with your body, it

366

:

feels good or it doesn't feel good.

367

:

When there's something that feels

good, you know that's the direction.

368

:

To go, so when opportunities arise and you

check in, is that something I should do?

369

:

Yes or no, and you just

start following that.

370

:

So again, happy new year.

371

:

It's going to be a fabulous new year.

372

:

It's going to be a fabulous

:

373

:

and whatever has come before you have

an opportunity to start to shift the

374

:

change to that and move into your new

vision for yourself and for your life.

375

:

I look forward to talking and

connecting with you later.
