[00:00:59] Eric Goranson: [00:01:00] We have some of our favorite. Guests and friends coming on to do a fireside chat that you won't want to miss. So make sure you look for that around your Christmas holiday, not a deep dive into home improvement, but just think of a bunch of old friends sitting around with some breaking news as well inside of it.

[00:01:41] Eric Goranson: This is one of those times. So let's jump back into our conversation. You didn't hear this on Saturday, cause it didn't make the show, but I've got Gary Solomon. From, uh, Blacktown security. And of course, Darren Broderson, our business development manager, he is in this podcast as well, [00:02:00] but there were some good questions.

[00:02:05] Darrin Broderson: I have one thing I just want to ask Gary, like, uh, just on the topic. Okay. So the, the example that we were talking about, this, this email came out and it had the, I think I have a screenshot of it. Um, email came out and it had their logo.

[00:02:49] Gary Salman: I mean, who's your email provider?
[:
[00:02:55] Gary Salman: Hotmail. So you can, through Microsoft, there's an option at [00:03:00] the top of the screen that says report a phishing email. I think it says, um, Yeah. So if you go to the top of the screen and hit junk, you can choose junk or you can market as fishing.

[00:03:31] Gary Salman: You know, uh, more people default falling victim. So I always say mark, if you definitely flag it as a real phishing email, then the market, the only bad thing about fishing is if it's coming from a legit company like black Talon sends you an email and you just don't like it, any market is. It degrades that company's ability to deliver emails because then you get marked as like a spammer, right.

[00:04:10] Gary Salman: But Darren, I mean, to your point, I get, I show an example. When I do training, I literally went online, bought something on Amazon, took the order email. You know, when you order on Amazon within a second and sends you the order email, I took it, I opened up the code. I changed one line of code that says, um, you know, check order, order status.

[00:04:45] Gary Salman: So there's techniques like hovering. Like you can take your mouse on your computer, hover over the link, and then it'll show you the real web address. So maybe it's Amazon. Yeah. Yeah, you can maybe it's I bought a website called Amazon. That's my secret. [00:05:00] And when you hover you like, yeah, you don't like, you're not going to get me.

[00:05:14] Gary Salman: Yeah. Yeah. And you, but you'll see, like Amazon, the other way down, whatever, and a lot of people will get jammed. Is someone actually hacks your real email address? You send an email to Carolyn Carolyn does that verification on, oh, this is w abc.com. It says real email address. You must have send this clicks on a link and then she gets it.

[00:05:54] Gary Salman: The world's not going to end because you didn't click on a link or open an attachment. And then when you have time, [00:06:00] then analyze the email quickly. It takes you like 15 seconds to load. Right.

[00:06:12] Caroline Blazovsky: Right. And then, so they took it and at the bottom of the email, they signed my name. So they'll like, oh, talk to you soon. So it looks so legit, right? Except that it said good day person. That was the only thing that was a little off or good day.

[00:06:28] Gary Salman: And he's communicated where the, for argument's sake for thirty years, Caroline signs a good day or says, Hey, good day, Darren. Instantly, Darren would say F that you right.

[00:06:43] Eric Goranson: think that's what I did. That's exactly
[:
[00:06:49] Eric Goranson: weird, weird attachment that I didn't ask.
[:
[00:07:00] Gary Salman: you know, I mean, that's what they do. They will, the best, the best attack I have ever seen still to this date is a LifeLock phishing email. Um, we had a, have a high value client and he signed up for LifeLock because he was concerned about his identity and his network and all this stuff.

[00:07:40] Gary Salman: He was one step away from punching his username and password in. But he said to me, flat out, he's like, listen, if you hadn't trained me to look at the URL, I would've given up all my information. I'm like, yeah, that's what happens here. Right. You can have the best password in the world. And we didn't talk about this, but you give up your username and password to someone [00:08:00] and you don't have the MFA enabled that you're done.

[00:08:12] Darrin Broderson: a real quick story. That truly happened on shorter time. But, uh, I got an, a, I saw a post on Instagram from a reliable friend who really only posts on Instagram and you

[00:08:28] Darrin Broderson: something important or it's legit.
[:
[00:09:01] Darrin Broderson: Commonly use and I assigned it like Ray ban, you know, just for that site. So let's not anything else that I used elsewhere. I purchased sunglasses, which were ridiculously cheap, you know, 25 bucks instead of 250 a pair. I bought six pairs. I paid for it on paid pal. Figuring that would be a protective way to.

[00:09:54] Darrin Broderson: It came from China. It was a local New York address in Chinatown that like. [00:10:00] I mean, I'm sure that there are people who put in their credit card and then their credit card is reached.

[00:10:12] Darrin Broderson: like, you know, there could be it's, it's the commerce, but it's also, Hey, we have this guy who's going to sell this cheap knockoff stuff, but Hey, if it gets, this guy is stupid enough to give us his Amex. We got that too. And it's, you know, site visits a crazy

[00:10:33] Gary Salman: Right. Or hit you up on the street for something. And you're like, oh, that's really. Yeah. Like those, uh, those two kids selling stuff out of their dorm room at Muellenberg college, like that kind of racket, you mean it was a changeable. Yeah. Right, right on.

[00:10:57] Eric Goranson: And we're you always got that recorder going so we can make [00:11:00] sure and grab a, just for you. Well, I wanted to thank everybody.
