Transcripts

Imo Essien:

I am B emo s.

2

:

And now you're tuned in

to the OAR Monarchy show.

3

:

Aaron: I'm Aaron

4

:

Mike: And I'm Mike.

5

:

Aaron: and you're listening to

the Monarchist Basketball Show.

6

:

Coach Jeff Jones, star of the

show, he's here as he always is

7

:

because otherwise it wouldn't be

the Monarchist Basketball Show.

8

:

Good to see you coach.

9

:

Jeff Jones: Going to see you guys,

10

:

Mike: Great to talk with you again.

11

:

Obviously this week we got two home games

and tomorrow we start with Princeton,

12

:

at four o'clock at Chartway Arena.

13

:

What can you tell us

about this Princeton team?

14

:

Because everything I hear about them

is it's going to be a very tough game.

15

:

Jeff Jones: They are very good.

16

:

They could be, and clearly they're not as

talented as say, Arkansas is, they, they

17

:

could be the best team right now, right?

18

:

Arkansas has the high

ceiling and all that.

19

:

But Princeton they don't beat themselves.

20

:

They're really smart.

21

:

They play together.

22

:

They shoot the three, you know,

defensively, they're just real solid.

23

:

You know, they'll play eight

guys, but pretty much it's, you

24

:

know, five guys that get it done.

25

:

They're very versatile.

26

:

You know, they're not running the

Princeton offense, but it's a, you

27

:

know, five men out kind of motion.

28

:

They they make you guard

a lot of different things,

29

:

present a lot of problems.

30

:

They're four and oh right now.

31

:

Mitch Henderson their

coach does a heck of a job.

32

:

He actually, he played at Princeton for

for Pete Carrill back back in the day.

33

:

And obviously they had a terrific year

last year ending up in the sweet 16.

34

:

They lost some key players.

35

:

But you know, with this group they've

bounced back and you know, they, they

36

:

beat Rutgers, they beat Duquesne at

Duquesne they beat Hofstra and then

37

:

they beat Monmouth of those teams,

you know, Monmouth's not great, but

38

:

Duquesne and Hofstra are, you know,

two teams that are picked to do well

39

:

in their respective conferences.

40

:

So it's going to be,

you know, a great test.

41

:

And a big opportunity for us.

42

:

I think our guys are just excited to to

get to play and to go out and compete

43

:

against another really good team.

44

:

Aaron: All right so there's a lot of

young guys on the squad and you know with

45

:

that can come you know some inconsistency

and sometimes with practices.

46

:

How is this week practices gone for y'all?

47

:

Jeff Jones: You know, it wasn't

perfect, but overall, I think pretty

48

:

good, you know, after traveling all

day Tuesday, we came back on Wednesday

49

:

and, you know, practice was okay

and we were, you know, working on

50

:

some things, working on ourselves.

51

:

You know, third Thursday again, was.

52

:

Was okay.

53

:

It had some good moments.

54

:

Friday was awful.

55

:

I mean, it was a really bad practice.

56

:

And you know, I try to

communicate to the guys.

57

:

You know, I just don't understand.

58

:

You know, not coming in locked

in, you know, ready to go.

59

:

And then they responded and

Saturday was one of our best

60

:

practices that you guys were there.

61

:

When it was one of our best practices

overall you know, this year, and then

62

:

today's practice was outstanding one,

one we termed not long, but strong.

63

:

So, you know, day before game we want

to go hard, but we don't want to, you

64

:

know, we don't want to wear them out.

65

:

And do too much you know, we'll

if we can be locked in like that

66

:

you know, for practices you know,

we'll definitely get better.

67

:

And if we're locked in like that for

games, you know, we'll certainly have

68

:

a chance to be competitive in pretty

much anything any game that we play.

69

:

Mike: All right, so you mentioned it,

the Saturday practice, obviously Frank

70

:

Cassell and Ben Stanley, two ODU alums,

came back to, play on the scout team.

71

:

As fans, it was really cool to

watch, , Danny and Dorico go up head

72

:

to head with Frank and, they won

some of their fair battles in that.

73

:

And it was cool to see them be

tested by a veteran like Frank.

74

:

Jeff Jones: There's a, an NCAA rule

that allows, you know, a former

75

:

player to come back and I think the

word is occasional and you know,

76

:

Frank had just gotten back from from

overseas and is kind of in between.

77

:

And since you saw him on

Saturday, he signed a contract.

78

:

To go back to, uh, oh God, you're,

I was going to say Paraguay,

79

:

but I think it's Uruguay.

80

:

Who, and by the way he played back

there, there last year and Malik Curry.

81

:

Our former point guard is in Uruguay

doing really well right, right now.

82

:

So Frank's going to be going back

there right after Thanksgiving.

83

:

So, you know, he came in and as you all

said, he was a physical presence and you

84

:

know, it was good to go up against him.

85

:

And Ben is just trying to get some runs

in and he's you know, rehabbing that

86

:

knee and you know, he's you know, asked

me if he could come back and practice

87

:

and he's, I think those were his, what,

second or third practices that, that

88

:

he, that he's come out there with us.

89

:

So, you know, gives our guys

some older, more physically

90

:

mature guys to, to play against.

91

:

And you know, we did have a really

spirited practice on Saturday.

92

:

Mike: So a follow up, how long

has that rule been in place?

93

:

And , how long have you been

welcoming alums back to campus

94

:

Jeff Jones: Well, it's been forever.

95

:

I mean, I can remember being at American

university and John was in town.

96

:

He was in between NBA gigs and he came and

practiced with our guys for a day or two.

97

:

It's really rare.

98

:

I mean, it's not anything

where we reach out.

99

:

You know, frank actually ask if he, you

know, he could come in and you know,

100

:

work out because he is, you know, he's

in between jobs, uh, you know, just

101

:

got back and getting ready to go and

he wanted to stay in shape and Ben Rick

102

:

made the request because he is rehabbing

that knee and he's working really hard,

103

:

but he hadn't had an opportunity to.

104

:

To get out there on the court.

105

:

So, it's not something that we would be,

you know, doing on a regular basis you

106

:

know, we can help them out and it, you

know, it can be beneficial for us as well.

107

:

Aaron: Yeah, it was great.

108

:

Great talking with Frank.

109

:

The same smile and infectious

attitude was out there.

110

:

I love seeing him, you know, you know,

gas up the guys when someone made a

111

:

good play, you know, a couple of times

he seemed really surprised and someone

112

:

making something you can see his face

just kind of light up and make some fun.

113

:

Positive encouragement there, and

I know that means a lot to the guys

114

:

because, you know, they've seen

his success and what he's done.

115

:

Mike and I are pretty excited

because Frank is going to come

116

:

on the podcast at some point once

he gets settled in at Uruguay.

117

:

So, as, hopefully we you know, when

he's back in the States we see him

118

:

from time to time around the Ted.

119

:

Jeff Jones: It's always

fun when he's back.

120

:

I mean, usually it's during the the

summer months and he'll come in and

121

:

you know, work out with Chris Kavinsky.

122

:

But you know, just a terrific human being.

123

:

Obviously he's you know, had a a very good

career here at Old Dominion as a player.

124

:

And he's parlayed that into a very

successful professional career.

125

:

But you know, somebody that You

know, hadn't had a chance to meet him

126

:

until after he had left old dominion.

127

:

You know, I just he's just a, as I

said he's a terrific person fun to

128

:

be around, you know, got a big smile

and always got a you know, a kind,

129

:

positive word for everybody, you know,

including these young guys that he.

130

:

He doesn't know from Adam, but

you know, they're at his school

131

:

and he wants to see them do well.

132

:

And then he, you know, he's

trying to you know, help those

133

:

that, that have come after him.

134

:

Mike: All right, so you touched on

it on Princeton's offense and I'm

135

:

interested in how tough it is when you

go against a team like Ball State and

136

:

then Arkansas and then now Princeton

who are all doing very different things.

137

:

How does that impact how you

138

:

Jeff Jones: It, you know, it's great.

139

:

It's fun in a lot of ways but

it's a great learning opportunity.

140

:

So, you know, guys, Uh, you know, guys

that are on the scout team whether,

141

:

you know, whether a former player is

playing or it's just the current guys

142

:

on the team you know, they're learning.

143

:

You know, every three or four

days, kind of, you know, new

144

:

ways to play new offenses and

they're learning how to learn.

145

:

And then for our the guys that are in

the regular rotation you know, this

146

:

gives them a look, you know, a taste of

what the opponent is going to be doing.

147

:

And, you know, it might not.

148

:

Always be you know, exactly the

way, but you know, you're probably

149

:

guarding guys that might not be as

big or as athletic sometimes you

150

:

know, our white team, which is what we

call the scout team actually execute

151

:

stuff better than the opponent does.

152

:

And, you know, each of the

assistants, you know, they all

153

:

kind of, break down, you know, the

different guys have different scouts.

154

:

And so that gives them a chance to

organize that scout team and coach them.

155

:

It's great experience for them.

156

:

And like I said, you know, those

our white team by and large,

157

:

you know, does a terrific job.

158

:

I think they're just coming

into their own this year.

159

:

You know, there's some, you know, you

got your Mari, you got Jalen Who else?

160

:

You know, Jay Wade, Lee Leroy you

know, you got a lot of those guys that

161

:

are younger guys and they're Cooper.

162

:

Jones is like night

and day from last year.

163

:

You know, he's physically stronger,

but you know, he went the whole

164

:

month of October, I think in

practice and didn't miss a shot.

165

:

He really creates some problems

from an offensive standpoint.

166

:

But, you know, getting a good look

for Princeton and, you know, trying to

167

:

recreate the Arkansas stuff and again,

it's not the actual athleticism, but

168

:

you get the movements in the particular

basketball, the offensive actions so

169

:

that we can you know, anticipate and be

prepared when we go live in game action,

170

:

Aaron: Yeah, speaking of Cooper, he hit

a couple of big threes right in front

171

:

of us on Saturday during practice.

172

:

You know, Mike and I are like, okay.

173

:

That's good to

174

:

see.

175

:

Jeff Jones: It's always so much,

it's always so much fun to see

176

:

the guys, you know, grow that way.

177

:

And, you know, you, you want to see.

178

:

Yeah.

179

:

You know, freshmen that, that are

playing, you know, you're watching last

180

:

year, watching Bryce Baker, you know,

throughout the course of the year and

181

:

come in this year but even a guy like

coop that didn't, you know, didn't play.

182

:

Hardly any minutes at all in, in games

last year just through practice, you

183

:

know, practice and lifting weights.

184

:

And like I say it's night and day.

185

:

I mean, he's taking a big step up.

186

:

I would guess Billy Barnes, who was

his coach at Walsingham Academy, Billy

187

:

was a very good player at, at William

and Mary when I was at UVA playing, we

188

:

played head to head against one another.

189

:

Billy was his coach.

190

:

And I bet if Billy saw him now in

one of our practices, you know, he'd

191

:

shake his head and say, wow, you

know, he's coop's gotten better.

192

:

Aaron: Alright, coach.

193

:

So, I know you take things one, one game

at a time, but at a very high level and

194

:

you got Drexel on Sunday, probably have

the best player in the CAA on that squad.

195

:

Can you let Monarch Nation just,

you know, know a little bit

196

:

of what they're expecting when

they come out Sunday, that team?

197

:

Jeff Jones: You know,

they're a veteran team.

198

:

They've got Amir Williams's,

a six 10 six 11 Postman.

199

:

You know, he does a great job

and, you know, forces they

200

:

utilize him in a way that forces.

201

:

yoU know, their their opponents, us to,

you know, to take him into account and

202

:

then when you do by doubling or helping

you know, then the other guys compliment

203

:

him very well, they will run a lot of

Princeton type actions off offensively

204

:

last year I don't know if it was our first

game, it was one of our first games you

205

:

know, we went up there, up And you know,

they just were physically tougher than us.

206

:

We lost a game that, you know, came down

to the end, but they just, you know, they

207

:

were the tougher team and that was you

know, a good measure for us to know that

208

:

we, you know, if we were going to have

any success, we need to, we needed to,

209

:

you know, fight a little bit harder, be

a little bit more physically competitive.

210

:

It was also probably the most poorly

officiated game that we had all of

211

:

last year and I haven't forgotten that.

212

:

But you know, that,

that'll be a tough one too.

213

:

But as you said we got to devote

our attention to Princeton first.

214

:

Mike: All right, so one thing I picked

up at practice is you had a bunch

215

:

of plays named after other schools.

216

:

Are those plays that you picked up

while watching those teams or are

217

:

those names just kind of random?

218

:

Jeff Jones: no They're pretty much you

know, they're pretty much authentic.

219

:

And it's something that over the years and

I'm trying to think, you know, Vandy that,

220

:

that's an action you know, it's that they

didn't, Van, Vanderbilt didn't run that

221

:

play, but it's an action with a backscreen

ball screen that, that will run gosh, I'm

222

:

trying to think what other play do you,

223

:

Mike: I heard Lehigh at

224

:

Jeff Jones: Lehigh is a, an

out of bounds play that we run.

225

:

That was what when we were at American

university and had to defend CJ McCollum

226

:

they, they put CJ in the spot where we put

Chauncey and we had to have special rules.

227

:

Cause you know nobody in in the

Patriot league could, you know,

228

:

could guard him straight up.

229

:

So, Yeah.

230

:

So we took that you know, from from

Lehigh when CJ McCollum was there.

231

:

Aaron: So, coach, last week when

we talked you gave us an update

232

:

on Sam and Emo with the shoulder.

233

:

I know that we saw a couple

things come out today with

234

:

regards to the health of the team.

235

:

Can you let Monarch Nation kind of

know what the latest and greatest is?

236

:

Jeff Jones: Sure.

237

:

I tell you what, Emo's been great.

238

:

You know, Emo had been

playing really well.

239

:

And then for whatever reason,

he just tailed off a little bit.

240

:

But he's bounced back the last three

or four days and has been outstanding.

241

:

So he's got no physical ailments.

242

:

You know, Sam we did announce today,

he's going to be having a season ending.

243

:

Knee surgery coming up here soon.

244

:

You know, he had the surgery in the

summer, rehabbed, came back and, you

245

:

know, immediately reinjured the knee.

246

:

So we're just going to go ahead and

pull the plug and you know, have

247

:

him get the surgery to, to work on

his kneecap actually which will be

248

:

a long you know, re rehab process.

249

:

So, so he's out the other one that

you know, was a little bit scary, but.

250

:

Or at least it sounds scarier

than maybe it is you know, Ty

251

:

yesterday was uncomfortable.

252

:

He had a what he felt like was a you

know, a rapid heartbeat and he went to

253

:

student health and then they, you know,

they sent him to the emergency room and

254

:

Ty and and Jordan we're both there pretty

much all afternoon and into the evening.

255

:

They, you know, they were able to

kind of settle him down a little bit.

256

:

He ended up spending the

night in the hospital.

257

:

And you know, it was a, I'm going

to say a heart issue, but he.

258

:

Was released today.

259

:

The heart rate, you know, went

back to what it was supposed to be.

260

:

And you know, what I've been told is,

uh, you know, he's kind of good to go.

261

:

It's day to day we're, he's not going

to play against Princeton tomorrow.

262

:

It's just, to me, that just seems.

263

:

That just seems fast.

264

:

So we'll, you know, just

observe and keep an eye on him.

265

:

And again as Jason Mitchell was told,

you know, his return will be day to day.

266

:

And, you know, we'll see what that

means beyond you know, beyond tomorrow.

267

:

Mike: All right.

268

:

So I think it was last week or

the week before you talked about

269

:

the zone and how it needed work.

270

:

How is that coming along?

271

:

Jeff Jones: You know, I think our three,

two zone is you know, has looked, you

272

:

know, pretty solid when our guys are,

you know, really active and locked

273

:

in, you know, I, I think we can we can

go to that part of it is personnel.

274

:

There's a lineup and it's basically

comprised of veteran players.

275

:

You know, if we've got Imo, Chauncey,

Bryce, Dorico and either RJ or Wade out

276

:

there, I feel a lot more confident in it.

277

:

Than I do with some of the younger

perimeter guys that, that just

278

:

haven't gotten the knack with it.

279

:

So chances are if we go to go to that you

know, it'll be with probably that, you

280

:

know, that lineup or very similar to that.

281

:

Our 13 to three, which is kind of a

one, three, one that falls into When

282

:

the ball goes to the baseline, you

know, that's something we've been

283

:

able to use effectively for the last,

probably gosh, since the:

284

:

So what's that five, five years or so.

285

:

It's been a really good change up for us.

286

:

We're still figuring that one out.

287

:

That one has taken a couple

guys, you know, longer.

288

:

to really get a feel for it.

289

:

We'll continue working on it, but it's

probably more down, down the road.

290

:

You know, to be able to use

something like that, unless we just

291

:

kind of throw it out there for one

possession and see what happens.

292

:

And, you know, if a team's not

prepared for it, you know, maybe we

293

:

could throw them off a little bit.

294

:

We did go to the zone, one possession

one possession against Arkansas

295

:

and we talked about it cause

you know, they're a team that.

296

:

Really likes to shoot the three.

297

:

They shoot it well.

298

:

And we talked to them and I

said, yeah, let's just do it.

299

:

We're going to, we're going to do it

one time, you know, let's make sure we,

300

:

you know, take, you know, we, we get

our coverage, we're disciplined and,

301

:

you know, get out to shooters, you know,

and the personnel part is they kind of.

302

:

Made a little bit of penetration, but they

held Leo in there and they skipped it to

303

:

his Leroy in there and they skipped it to

his corner and he couldn't get out there.

304

:

So we got out of that one really

quick in the Arkansas game.

305

:

Aaron: Alright, so on Saturday,

we saw Dorico battling.

306

:

You know, big smile on his face, you know.

307

:

A couple of 10 15 ft.

308

:

Jump shots.

309

:

Obviously wasn't with you guys

on the road trip last week.

310

:

Kind of.

311

:

Can you update us on what

his status is right now?

312

:

Jeff Jones: hE's back.

313

:

You know, we came back from the came

back from the road trip and you know, I

314

:

had outlined for for Rico what his path

would would need to be if he was were

315

:

to rejoin the team and, you know, he was

remorseful and you know, knew that he had

316

:

made a mistake and wanted to you know,

make sure that his teammates understood

317

:

that you know, that he under that, that

he got the fact that he, you know, he'd

318

:

messed up a little bit and you know, the

big thing is that, you know, he's come

319

:

back and you know, he hasn't, you know,

he's not back in the starting lineup.

320

:

Yup.

321

:

You know, he'll still have

to work his way back there.

322

:

You know, that's Danny's spot for now.

323

:

But you know, Rico has been great

since he came back and you know,

324

:

he's working hard and has been real

positive and encouraging and you know,

325

:

his made it known to everybody that

he, you know, he really does value

326

:

and want to be you know, back on the

team and doing all the right things.

327

:

Mike: I had an interesting conversation

with Kieran about Dorico and his set shot.

328

:

Kieran is a fan of his set shot

and thinks he can shoot threes,

329

:

but he also said Dorico refuses to.

330

:

Jeff Jones: Yeah.

331

:

I mean, He, I think, you know, his

thing is a he's much uh, much more

332

:

comfortable right at 15 or 16 feet.

333

:

And it's not really a set shot.

334

:

I mean, he's not, you know, maybe it's

not a jump shot, but it's not a set shot.

335

:

It's a hop shot, maybe.

336

:

But you know, he's worked on

it and you know, he's got a

337

:

really nice mid range shot.

338

:

He can stretch it out to three.

339

:

I don't think he's worked on it as much

and I don't think that he has as much

340

:

confidence in the three, but we've been,

and, you know, in certain situations,

341

:

we've been really encouraging him to shoot

that on a ball screen situation with a

342

:

short roll which is a role, not all the

way to the basket you know, a pick and pop

343

:

into a soft area on the on the baseline.

344

:

You know, I think that can be a

real you know, a real help for us.

345

:

We are.

346

:

Looking at some situations, let's say,

for instance, you know, in a late game

347

:

situation you know, and you're coming

down, you know, full court we've talked

348

:

about putting Rico out there in the

right or the left baseline, you know,

349

:

16 feet, if you need a three, it could

be a three pointer you know, what's

350

:

the big guy going to do, you know, you

got Chauncey Jenkins coming at you full

351

:

speed, is he going to be in there to

try to protect the rim or is he going

352

:

to be out more often than not, I think.

353

:

He's probably going to be in and try to

get, you know, down there and try to help

354

:

on Chauncey, which means that, you know,

in, in that soft area in there you know,

355

:

Rico can You know, can catch and have

time and space down there to shoot it.

356

:

So, you know, those are things

that we'll continue working on

357

:

through the course of the year.

358

:

But you know, he's, he, meaning Dorico,

has worked really hard at developing that.

359

:

I don't think he had it.

360

:

He certainly didn't have it to the

degree he does now when he came to us.

361

:

But he's worked really hard and you

know, we want to take advantage of that.

362

:

I think that's something that

you know, could be a positive.

363

:

Aaron: There was one specific play that I

know Mike and I saw where to Rico passed

364

:

up a shot, one that you're talking about.

365

:

You know, in on one of the baselines

and you stopped everything and you

366

:

told Dorico's like, I want you to

shoot that and you ran it again and he

367

:

shot it without hesitation and it was

beautiful and he lit up his face lit up.

368

:

So I can totally see that and

hopefully we'll see more of it.

369

:

Jeff Jones: Yeah.

370

:

I mean, you know, that's something

sometimes, you know, you, you've

371

:

got to, you know, players get in their

minds, you know, I should shoot that.

372

:

I shouldn't shoot that or whatever.

373

:

And I think they've got to know, you

know, from me from, you know, the team,

374

:

you know, that's a good shot for you.

375

:

You've worked hard to

make that a good shot.

376

:

And so that they understand that, you

know, in, in that situation, you know,

377

:

that's something that you know, not only

can you shoot it, we want you to shoot it.

378

:

You know, similar

situations we're trying to.

379

:

Make sure Chauncey knows, you know, he,

he doesn't have to turn everything into a.

380

:

You know, a foray to the rim, you know,

if he catches it with his feet set

381

:

and he's got, you know, some time and

space, we want him to shoot the three

382

:

another one like that, that you know,

we want our guys to be shot ready.

383

:

And, you know, we've talked about

right, a number of times, you

384

:

know, the volume increasing the

volume of the three point shots,

385

:

Mike: Alright, so I know it's

early in the season, but balancing

386

:

personalities is a big part of your job

and your whole coaching staff's job.

387

:

How is that going this season?

388

:

Where do you, what part of the season

do you finally feel comfortable with all

389

:

the personalities on the team and how

390

:

to deal with them?

391

:

Jeff Jones: every team is different.

392

:

And we're coming along and, you

know, there's still things, you

393

:

know, so when you think about it

certainly anybody that, that comes

394

:

from high school to college, right.

395

:

They were the star in

their high school team.

396

:

They're used to playing all the time

and they probably don't get subbed out

397

:

unless they're either tired, really tired.

398

:

oR they've got fouls.

399

:

tHat's not the case.

400

:

And so, you know, playing in a rotation.

401

:

Is different.

402

:

And again, you know, competitive

people, they want to play all the time.

403

:

And it's not going to happen, you

know, and you know, the Sean sometimes,

404

:

you know, how come you took me out?

405

:

Well, okay.

406

:

It might be fatigue.

407

:

It might be, you know, a correction, but

it might be, it's just time for Emo to

408

:

get a chance to go into the game, you

know, other than Chauncey, I don't see,

409

:

I'm not sure I see anybody on, on, on a

regular basis playing 30 plus minutes.

410

:

thAt's an advantage we have as a team

you know, and if, you know, one game,

411

:

Vashon plays 25 and Emo plays 15

then fine you know, against Arkansas.

412

:

Dev came into the game, we were

looking for him to give us a spark

413

:

and he came in and he played great

and he got it going a little bit.

414

:

So he was, Dev was actually the guy

that took a bunch of emos minutes in,

415

:

in that particular game, you know,

but it's, and Dev and I have had the

416

:

conversation a couple of times you

know, for him, his role in the team,

417

:

he plays behind our best player.

418

:

There's not much debate about whether

Chauncey is our best player or not.

419

:

He is, and Dev is the guy behind him.

420

:

So, you know, there's only so

many minutes that are going to

421

:

be there for Dev behind him.

422

:

Now, if he can come in and you know,

in a reserve role and, you know,

423

:

have a hot hand like he did against

Arkansas, then what we did is we moved.

424

:

Right.

425

:

We moved Chauncey over to the

point guard spot, you know,

426

:

playing Dev and emo together you

know, Dev and Vashon together.

427

:

That's not a very big back court.

428

:

yoU know, but if you've got Dev and

Chauncey you know, Chauncey's a bigger

429

:

point guard and Dev is just a lightning

fast two guard but he is smaller.

430

:

So, you know, learning all of those

things and learning that you know, there,

431

:

that there is a rotation and there's.

432

:

You know, there's going to be times

when you play and times when you

433

:

don't, sometimes it may, you know,

that, that may be dictated by how

434

:

you're playing, it might be dictated

by how someone else's is playing.

435

:

But you know, with, without a doubt,

I think you know, we have more

436

:

depth particularly on the, you know,

in the back court this year and

437

:

you know, different combinations.

438

:

And, you know, depending on what

happens on any given night you know,

439

:

you'll see different guys out there

playing more minutes or some less.

440

:

Aaron: Okay, Coach, so I was listening

to you on Scott Jackson, and y'all

441

:

talked about Thanksgiving a little bit.

442

:

I know you were having a bunch

of the guys over there, the ones

443

:

that aren't able to travel home.

444

:

What I want to know is, if Mike and I were

coming over for Thanksgiving, what's the

445

:

one item that's gonna be there we have

to, if we can only choose one, which one

446

:

are you telling us that we should eat?

447

:

Jeff Jones: See, everybody's always asking

about that, but I think that, you know,

448

:

the from the food, the cuisine standpoint

it's the mixture of everything, right.

449

:

It, that, that makes the Thanksgiving,

the traditional Thanksgiving dinner.

450

:

So good.

451

:

You know, you got some mashed potatoes

and gravy and green bean casserole

452

:

or you know, a sweet potato casserole

or you know, obviously the dressing.

453

:

And by the way, right, it's not stuffing

if it's not in the turkey, right?

454

:

I mean, it's very literal.

455

:

It's dressing, right?

456

:

If it's in the turkey,

it's stuffing, right?

457

:

I want to make sure you got to make

some, you got to make some good gravy.

458

:

It doesn't work with, without the gravy.

459

:

You know, it's always worked well

for me because I love dark meat.

460

:

Right.

461

:

And most people, you

know, are the other way.

462

:

If you were going to, you know, poll,

I think more people would, you know, go

463

:

for the white meat the turkey breast, but

you know, I'm dark and that, that's good.

464

:

You know, that, that works out well.

465

:

But you know, so that, that's

my theory on on, on that.

466

:

You know, you've definitely got

to have you know, leftovers.

467

:

And, you know, make sure that everybody

that comes, well, you know, all the

468

:

guys tomorrow when they leave, they'll

be loaded down with to go containers,

469

:

you know, and you gotta have you

know, I guess white bread isn't

470

:

healthy, but, you know, whatever kind

of bread for the turkey sandwiches,

471

:

you know, a little mayo, a little.

472

:

You know, sandwich bread, something,

you know, in the turkey, that's

473

:

you got it, you know, at least for

a day or two after Thanksgiving.

474

:

Mike: Yeah, the leftovers are maybe

my favorite part of Thanksgiving.

475

:

Can't wait to see you guys tomorrow

afternoon at four o'clock at Charway.

476

:

And again, on Sunday at two o'clock

against Drexel, looking real forward to

477

:

watching this team play this week and hope

Ty continues to improve from last night.

478

:

Thanks so much and happy Thanksgiving

479

:

Jeff Jones: Happy

Thanksgiving to you guys.

480

:

Happy Thanksgiving to all

the listeners out there.

481

:

And if if people are so inclined

if, you know, like, like you said,

482

:

Mike if they can say a prayer for

Ty you know, hopefully we'll get

483

:

him back basketball wise, but that's

a kind of a secondary concern.

484

:

It was a scare.

485

:

He's doing great.

486

:

He's back in the dorm.

487

:

But you know, we just want to

make sure that he's you know, he's

488

:

healthy and he's all squared away.

489

:

Mike: 100%.

490

:

All right.

491

:

Thanks again, Coach.

492

:

Go Monarchs.

493

:

Aaron: Go Monarchs.

494

:

And Monarch nation, we're going to.

495

:

Take a quick break and

then we'll be back with.

496

:

Chase away.

497

:

Uh, wait.

498

:

Stay.

499

:

They tuned.

500

:

Aaron: Welcome back, Monarch Nation!

501

:

We're thrilled to have one of our

favorite monarchs back on the show.

502

:

We're joined by number one in

your program, and number one

503

:

in your hearts, Jason Wade.

504

:

Welcome to the show, Jason.

505

:

Jason Wade: Appreciate it.

506

:

That was a good intro.

507

:

I like that.

508

:

How you guys doing?

509

:

Glad to be here.

510

:

Chop it up a little bit with you guys.

511

:

Aaron: Man, we're so happy to have you on.

512

:

Mike: Yeah, absolutely.

513

:

We're stoked to talk with you today.

514

:

We've talked with coach Jones

a lot about the 4 1 offense and

515

:

the transition to it this season.

516

:

We'd love to hear your thoughts on how

it's coming along and how you feel in it.

517

:

Jason Wade: I think the

transition was a good transition.

518

:

It's not as smooth as it probably

needs to be going forward.

519

:

But I think since we've transferred to the

1 4 offense, it's gotten better and better

520

:

each time we went out and practiced it.

521

:

So, that's the goal, just trying to

get better and better at what we're

522

:

doing and trying to perfect the craft.

523

:

But with the group of guys we got and

the amount of athleticism we have,

524

:

I think this fits our team a lot

better than any other set possible.

525

:

So just a matter of getting

comfortable with it.

526

:

Aaron: Alright, so last season when

we talked with you, Jason, we talked

527

:

a lot about your perseverance and,

you know, overcoming, and lots of

528

:

stuff to get back on the court.

529

:

And it was right at the beginning

of the season, so, you hadn't

530

:

had, you know, much of being back.

531

:

You'd worked through practice

and gone through summer stuff.

532

:

Folks who've been able to be out the

games and they take a look at you.

533

:

It's kind of they can see,

you know, night and day.

534

:

So what did you learn last year

throughout the season after coming back?

535

:

But even more so this summer

after playing for a whole season?

536

:

What reflection do you have like moving

forward is what did you learn about your

537

:

game and how are you different this year?

538

:

Jason Wade: I mean, as far as being

different this year, I mean, the physical

539

:

physique of my body has changed a lot.

540

:

I think I lost close around like 65

pounds since the beginning of last season.

541

:

So, with that was just consistency, you

know, just dieting well and working out.

542

:

And.

543

:

You know, staying in the gym as far

as what I learned about my game, you

544

:

know, the athleticism isn't hasn't come

back as much as I thought it was, but

545

:

I'm still happy for what I got and I'm

just trying to work with what I got and

546

:

try to make the best of my situation.

547

:

Mike: so we've already seen it

this year, and we saw it a lot last

548

:

year, but you're playing guard, and

sometimes you're asked to play in

549

:

the paint at like the 5 position.

550

:

hOw do you feel about having

to go into the paint and battle

551

:

against those giants down there?

552

:

Jason Wade: I mean, I

don't feel any type of way.

553

:

I know, you definitely have

to be in a kind of a different

554

:

mental space Leading up to it.

555

:

You know, I feel like going into the game

knowing that you're gonna be down in the

556

:

paint a lot you got to know that you're

gonna bang you're gonna be banging around,

557

:

you know down there with the big guys And

you just got to have that mental toughness

558

:

as far as well as that physical toughness

so just knowing that you're gonna have

559

:

some aches and pains after the game, but

Also knowing that you're helping your

560

:

team out in any way that you can, you

know, whether that is your position or

561

:

not just being out there is a blessing.

562

:

So, I would say the biggest part is

the mental piece, just knowing, like,

563

:

you got to think bigger than what you

are and play bigger than what you are.

564

:

So,

565

:

Aaron: Speaking of aches and pains.

566

:

I know we're on video so we can

see we're talking with you right

567

:

now But looks like you got a little

injury there over your left eyebrow

568

:

what's

569

:

going on

570

:

Jason Wade: yeah, I'll go ahead

and get close so y'all can see it.

571

:

Aaron: Oh, we may have to

do A video cut on this.

572

:

Jason Wade: yeah, no, it

looks a lot better today.

573

:

Yeah, yesterday in practice, me

and for Sean, we bumped heads.

574

:

And I think I got the worst end of

it, you know, I cut me pretty good

575

:

and my face was bleeding pretty good,

but I did end up with the basketball.

576

:

So I feel like it was a win on my part.

577

:

So, and he was good.

578

:

He wasn't hurt either.

579

:

So it was it was a win.

580

:

Mike: Alright, so, I'm gonna skip

ahead here and ask you for an update

581

:

on Ares, cause obviously I love dogs,

and I wanna hear about Ares, so.

582

:

Jason Wade: Yeah.

583

:

Yeah, you know, areas.

584

:

That's my guy.

585

:

I'm actually, we yeah.

586

:

He's at the apartment.

587

:

Me and my girlfriend, we just

broke up not too long ago.

588

:

So we're going, we're

splitting him back and forth.

589

:

So he's currently not with me right now.

590

:

But you know, that's my guy.

591

:

I love him.

592

:

I love waking up to his energy.

593

:

He just gives me like a boost of

energy just seeing him in the morning.

594

:

Like waking up and he's right

next to you smiling at you.

595

:

Just waiting for him to take you out.

596

:

So, that's definitely my guy.

597

:

Much love for him.

598

:

He got love for me.

599

:

So anything I could do for him, I will.

600

:

And I'm glad y'all brought him up

because I do remember last year he

601

:

was all over the place in the camera.

602

:

So, yeah, that's definitely my guy.

603

:

Aaron: Hey, so, Coach Jones

we've talked with him about it.

604

:

He talked on the radio the other

day on Scott Jackson's show

605

:

about finishing through contact.

606

:

So, this series, last series on

the road, you guys didn't get to

607

:

the line as much as you would have

wanted to despite Getting to the rim.

608

:

But one of the discussions was just

Not finishing through contact kind of

609

:

avoiding the contact and getting the

shots up He said hey, sometimes you just

610

:

got to finish through contact your shot

might get blocked But that's what you

611

:

got to do and as you guys are working

on it Can you talk to us a little bit

612

:

about finishing through contact and you

know how you guys are working on that?

613

:

Jason Wade: Yeah, absolutely.

614

:

So I think the biggest thing with

this group of guy, like a group

615

:

of guys, like I mentioned earlier

we're a very athletic group.

616

:

So when guys are driving to the cup,

they're trying to make an acrobatic play.

617

:

Just trying to put too much on

it that doesn't need to be there.

618

:

I feel like it's the biggest thing.

619

:

So I think just simplifying your

move when you're going to the cup

620

:

and just taking it strong and hard,

whether it does get blocked or not.

621

:

I just feel like you just got

to simplify the movement of

622

:

when you're going to the basket.

623

:

So I think that's the biggest thing.

624

:

And we've been in the gym a lot

getting hit with the pads, trying to

625

:

finish through contact, finish through

different, taking off different feet foot.

626

:

Dang.

627

:

I'm all over the place.

628

:

Trying to use both feet, whether it's

one foot jumping, two foot jumping.

629

:

You get what I'm trying to say, but yeah.

630

:

So just practicing finishing

through context, using the mat.

631

:

Just simplifying the movements

and just going strong.

632

:

Mike: So last weekend we had

a couple of former Monarchs

633

:

in the building for practice.

634

:

Ben Stanley and Frank Cassell, two

guys that know how to finish their

635

:

contact and play some tough defense.

636

:

What's it like to have those guys

back in the building and getting to

637

:

play against them to test your game?

638

:

Jason Wade: It's great.

639

:

You know, whenever we can get alumni in

the building, I think that's a special

640

:

thing that people one, are comfortable

enough to come back and, you know,

641

:

realize that this is their home too.

642

:

And two, for the coaching staff

to allow that, you know, I

643

:

think that's a special thing.

644

:

I don't know if many other programs

have that, but I think that's very cool.

645

:

And then just the type of people that

Frank and Ben are like, they're so

646

:

inspirational and so encouraging.

647

:

So it's just, it's a good energy

when they're in the building.

648

:

They're great matchups, you know,

been a very good low post score

649

:

and can shoot the ball as well.

650

:

We're not going to play too many

people this year that are stronger

651

:

than him down, down in the paint.

652

:

So I think that gives our guys good looks

to really get a feel of how physical

653

:

you have to be down in the paint.

654

:

And the same goes with Frank, you know.

655

:

Frank has been there, done

that, he's a vet, he knows all

656

:

the little tricks in the book.

657

:

So just trying to pass his knowledge on

down to the younger guys is just a great

658

:

thing, and then, you know, and we've been

talking about it all through the locker

659

:

room since Frank left, like, Frank is

strong as I don't know what, like, that's

660

:

a different type of strong right there.

661

:

So, just going through that, playing

against that, I think it's helping the

662

:

guys, and it's making their game stronger.

663

:

Aaron: Frank earned that call sign,

you know, Frank the Tank for a reason.

664

:

And it was interesting to watch

him over the years when he played

665

:

and how he transformed his body.

666

:

Frank didn't look like he did,

does now, when he came in.

667

:

And then each year, kind of how he

not only transformed physically,

668

:

but transformed his actual game.

669

:

And I know one thing that Mike and

I were talking about and we see it.

670

:

With you, is, and we saw in practice

on Saturday, is Frank might not be in

671

:

the best position to get a ball, but

somehow he comes up with the loose ball.

672

:

Good hands, kind of knows where,

he can kind of project where it's

673

:

going, and then he's got that

motor that like, just doesn't quit.

674

:

You don't, necessarily, may not be

as athletic as someone else, but it's

675

:

almost like you're one step ahead,

you know, to compromise for that.

676

:

Jason Wade: right, yeah, exactly, yeah,

677

:

Aaron: So, got a big game on Wednesday.

678

:

That's actually, that's tomorrow, right?

679

:

Yeah.

680

:

Jason Wade: yeah.

681

:

Aaron: you know, against Princeton,

we've talked to the coaches.

682

:

We've heard that they're tremendously,

you know, tremendously good squad.

683

:

You know, we're not going to ask

you to give any trade secrets

684

:

away on, you know, how you guys

are going to try to beat them.

685

:

But what are you looking most

forward to in playing Princeton?

686

:

Jason Wade: Most forward to, I would say

just one, just another opportunity to step

687

:

on the court in front of our fans at home.

688

:

As far as Princeton themselves,

they're a really well coached team.

689

:

And I think when you play teams

like that we, as monarchs, we

690

:

have to be all on the same page.

691

:

You know, we have to talk, we have

to know what we're doing defensively.

692

:

So I think this is going to test.

693

:

Our defensive mindset a lot this game.

694

:

And I think we need that, you

know, it's early in the season.

695

:

So the as many hard games we

can get in now that's going

696

:

to benefit us down the road.

697

:

So I'm excited to play Princeton.

698

:

They're a really good team.

699

:

I've heard a lot of good things about

them, but I'm interested to see how

700

:

we're going to match up with them.

701

:

You know, they got a good pace.

702

:

They play with good pace.

703

:

They got a lot of shooters.

704

:

They play, they're really tough.

705

:

So I think it's, I think

it's going to be a good game.

706

:

Mike: So speaking of teams, last week

you had a road trip where you played

707

:

Ball State and Arkansas, two teams that

play very different styles of basketball.

708

:

Ball State like to play tough

in the paint, and guard tough,

709

:

and Arkansas wanted to run.

710

:

But they weren't too keen on

defense from what the coaches said.

711

:

I'd love to hear what your thoughts

were on last week and how the team

712

:

is feeling after Obviously, a great

performance against Arkansas that

713

:

you guys fell short in, but are

you guys feeling more optimistic

714

:

and know that this is working or?

715

:

Jason Wade: I would say, yes,

I think everybody left last

716

:

week with a positive mindset.

717

:

Of course it's not good to lose,

but I think if you do lose, you

718

:

have to learn lessons and losing.

719

:

So I think that was the biggest

thing with last week, you

720

:

know, is our first road game.

721

:

We got a lot of young dudes on the team

first time facing adversity on the road.

722

:

And you know, we had to have people step

up with the absence of other people.

723

:

So I think that was a big piece as well.

724

:

And I think the people that had

to step up did a good job for the

725

:

circumstances that they were under.

726

:

So I'm looking forward to

where this team is headed.

727

:

I think it's a lot of good stuff

that we showed this past week.

728

:

Well, there's also a lot of things

that we do have to work on as

729

:

well, but I'm looking forward to

what this season has to bring.

730

:

Aaron: One of the things that you

guys did show was against Arkansas,

731

:

explosion of three point shooting that

we haven't seen a lot and certainly not

732

:

consistently over the last few years.

733

:

We've noticed some great ball

movement, but more importantly and

734

:

what coaches talked about is driving

the ball, getting to good spots.

735

:

Getting defenses to move collapse

and then get getting shooters good

736

:

opportunities and then knocking them

down So, how are you guys feeling

737

:

when those shots were going down?

738

:

It just seemed like the momentum started

to build and Yeah, how are you guys

739

:

feeling once that started to roll?

740

:

Jason Wade: You know, it's

definitely a good feeling, you

741

:

know, when you're hitting shots

and everybody's hitting and it was

742

:

literally like everybody was hitting

shots, you know, they were falling.

743

:

So that's always a good feeling.

744

:

Because, you know, you have those

games where shots don't fall.

745

:

So, you you definitely, um,

what's the word I'm looking for?

746

:

You know, are grateful for

when shots are falling.

747

:

And it gives you an idea of

how good your team can be when

748

:

you're clicking on all cylinders.

749

:

But I think guys need to understand that

some games, shots aren't going to fall.

750

:

And that's where we have

to mentally lock in.

751

:

We have to come up with stops on the

other end and get out in transition.

752

:

And not just rely on outside shooting.

753

:

I think Coach Jones is going to do a

good job of reminding us to do that.

754

:

But like you guys said, the shots

were falling and it's always a good

755

:

feeling when shots are falling.

756

:

Mike: All right, so we

touched on it earlier.

757

:

A lot of new guys in

the building this year.

758

:

What's the biggest change in not off

the court from last year to this year?

759

:

Jason Wade: oFf the court?

760

:

Mike: Yeah, like chemistry wise, do

you feel a different energy in the

761

:

building or how are guys getting better?

762

:

Come on.

763

:

Jason Wade: definitely.

764

:

I would say um, you know, we had

a bunch of older dudes last year.

765

:

So I would say the maturity

level is different.

766

:

I'm not knocking one over the other.

767

:

I just think it's different.

768

:

Like we had a lot of older guys this year.

769

:

We have a lot of younger guys.

770

:

So it's good.

771

:

It gives guys the opportunity to grow up.

772

:

You know, I came in the, my freshman

year, we came in a group of young

773

:

guys and just followed the older

guys and followed their lead.

774

:

So I'm hoping that, um, these younger

guys could do the same thing and hopefully

775

:

translate onto the court as well.

776

:

Mike: All right.

777

:

So as one of the upperclassmen,

you're taking on kind of a

778

:

leadership role this year.

779

:

What does that mean to you to be a

leader and how do you prefer to lead?

780

:

Jason Wade: You know,

it's changed over time.

781

:

You know, I've always been wanting to

kind of lead by example, you know, try to

782

:

be the hardest playing guy on the court,

whether that's running the fastest or

783

:

jumping the highest or making the most

shots or locking somebody up on defense.

784

:

With my situation, not being

able to physically like move

785

:

as well as I want to be.

786

:

The best the best athlete on the court.

787

:

I have to be more verbal in my approach

to try to motivate guys to do better.

788

:

I think that's my biggest thing, just

trying to figure out the right things

789

:

to say to people and how to relate a

message without, you know, necessarily

790

:

putting the person down, but getting

the point across in a positive way.

791

:

So I would say that's the biggest thing.

792

:

Everybody's different.

793

:

Everybody takes things differently.

794

:

So just learning the different teammates,

my different teammates and how they

795

:

interact to, you know, that type

796

:

of stuff.

797

:

Aaron: So, you know, being a

leader, you've obviously gone

798

:

through you know, a number of things

in your career at Old Dominion.

799

:

You've overcome a, you know, a

couple major injuries and really

800

:

fought through to get where you are.

801

:

One guy that we haven't had the

opportunity to see on the court, Sam

802

:

Hood, you know, Sam's had some setbacks,

so Mike just asked you about being

803

:

in that leadership role, you know,

is that an example of a thing that,

804

:

you know, where you can really relate

to a guy to try to help them from a

805

:

player's perspective to kind of stay

in the right frame of mind and, you

806

:

know, do what Mitchell's having them do

and those sorts of things to get back.

807

:

Jason Wade: Yeah, most definitely.

808

:

And you know, it's a fine

balance with that too.

809

:

You know, when you have an injury,

you kind of want to hear other

810

:

people's story, but you kind of

want to write your own story.

811

:

And, you know, Do you do it?

812

:

How you want to do it?

813

:

So my biggest thing has just

been being there for him.

814

:

I think when he first did it, you

know, just send him a text like like

815

:

you bro, you'll get through this and

just kind of let him come to me with

816

:

questions that are like approaching him.

817

:

So I think that's the biggest thing.

818

:

Just try to find an intermediate of, you

know, applying pressure to teammates and

819

:

letting them reach out to you for help.

820

:

But that's definitely a big thing.

821

:

You know, seeing someone

get hurt and Help them.

822

:

Going through the mental things that it

does to you and not just the physical.

823

:

It's tough to watch one of

your teammates go through that.

824

:

And I just wanted to let them

know that I was here for them.

825

:

And that goes for any of my

teammates, you know, that is

826

:

going through something like that.

827

:

I'll always have their back and

if they got, need someone to

828

:

talk to, I'll always be there.

829

:

Mike: All right.

830

:

So coach has talked to us about

the zone and how it needs work.

831

:

But I'd love to hear your opinion

on what defense you prefer to play.

832

:

Jason Wade: Man, that's a good question.

833

:

I Guess it depends on

the team we're playing.

834

:

I guess would have to be my answer.

835

:

I feel like it varies

between the teams we play.

836

:

I would say my favorite is man to man

because that's when you really just are

837

:

able to get out and run in transition run.

838

:

You could create steals and I feel

like that gets the crowd going when

839

:

you kind of sit back in the zone.

840

:

You got to kind of wait for the

people you're playing to make a

841

:

mistake, maybe throw a bad pass

or, you know, take a bad shot.

842

:

I feel like when you're a man to man,

especially full court, like you can set

843

:

the tempo and get them playing in a way

that they're not used to playing and get

844

:

out in transition and get some dunks.

845

:

So I have to say, I have to

say full court man to man.

846

:

Aaron: All right.

847

:

In about a month, we'll fast forward

just a little bit going to be

848

:

going to Honolulu for a tournament.

849

:

Have you ever been to Hawaii?

850

:

And what are you looking

forward to with regards to that?

851

:

The whole experience.

852

:

Jason Wade: I feel like I wouldn't

be a basketball player if I

853

:

didn't say, you know, playing

basketball and getting some wins.

854

:

But I feel like I have to be honest,

the beautiful sunsets, the beaches,

855

:

it's a little bit of everything.

856

:

It's a combination of everything.

857

:

Like I said, I haven't been

I'm looking forward to it.

858

:

And years past, we have not

done a good job of playing in

859

:

these invitational tournaments.

860

:

So I'm making it personal

that we need to go home.

861

:

With at least two wins this year.

862

:

So, I feel like that's the goal.

863

:

I think since I've been here,

you know, we went to the Virgin

864

:

Islands my freshman year.

865

:

We won one game.

866

:

Cayman Islands my sophomore

year, I think we won one game.

867

:

So, just try to get out there on the

positive positive spectrum with wins.

868

:

I think that's the biggest goal for me.

869

:

But I am looking forward to the

beautiful sunsets and the beach.

870

:

Mike: I grew up there.

871

:

You're going to love it.

872

:

It's just the perfect

weather all the time.

873

:

But I know all Dominion fans will be very

happy to hear that your goal is two wins

874

:

minimum with how that's a tough field too.

875

:

It's going

876

:

to be, it's going to be a big challenge.

877

:

And I hope you guys obviously

kick ass, but uh, all right.

878

:

I wanted to ask this question last

year and I just kept forgetting.

879

:

So obviously you played

basketball your whole life, at

880

:

what age could you first dunk?

881

:

Jason Wade: I think I was 12

or 13, but I didn't get it.

882

:

I didn't get an in game dunk until

my sophomore year because that's

883

:

when I finally got the courage

enough to actually try it in game

884

:

and it was a wide open fast break.

885

:

So I was like let me go ahead and try it.

886

:

So it's my sophomore year.

887

:

I got my first dunk.

888

:

And then in that same game, I

ended up getting three more.

889

:

So it was just, they were

just rolling in that game.

890

:

But I say, I think I was 12 or

13 when I got my first dunk.

891

:

Aaron: All right.

892

:

I got a

893

:

quick

894

:

follow up on that.

895

:

I want to know what was going through

your mind So when you got was it?

896

:

Well, first off tell us was it a steal

had and you just had a breakaway pass?

897

:

And then once once you knew that

you you had that that runway there

898

:

What's going through your head?

899

:

And then at the last question,

what was your coach like?

900

:

And what were you thinking?

901

:

If I miss this dunk, what's

going to happen to me?

902

:

Jason Wade: tHat's, those

are great questions.

903

:

It was a steal.

904

:

I had stole it.

905

:

We were actually in the zone.

906

:

I was at the top of the zone.

907

:

He tried to throw it over the zone.

908

:

So I stole it.

909

:

I jumped the passing lane and went down.

910

:

And you know, in that moment, you're

not really thinking much, you know,

911

:

you just, the adrenaline takes over.

912

:

You're going fast and you're just

like, man, I'm gonna, I'm gonna

913

:

just try to dunk it like just try.

914

:

So went up, dunked it.

915

:

Everybody knew on my team

knew that was my first dunk.

916

:

So they were cheering.

917

:

It was my mom.

918

:

She actually got a picture

of it on her Instagram.

919

:

I don't know if it's still on

there, I know it was on her

920

:

Instagram at some point, but it

was a scrimmage verse Monica.

921

:

So yeah, that was that was

a big moment of my career.

922

:

And then I follow with two

more dunks that same game.

923

:

So, I think I just needed that,

that icebreaker to get me going.

924

:

Mike: I mean, the first one's the best.

925

:

It's,

926

:

Jason Wade: Absolutely.

927

:

Absolutely.

928

:

Mike: Alright.

929

:

So we asked you last year,

favorite court you've played on?

930

:

WOndering if that's changed

at all in this last year.

931

:

Jason Wade: I don't think it has.

932

:

Yeah.

933

:

Mike: All right, Aaron,

it's time for the fun stuff.

934

:

Aaron: Sweet.

935

:

Now we don't have any of these

scripted, so these are just going to

936

:

be flying off the shelf if we come up.

937

:

Jason Wade: All right,

938

:

Aaron: you know, last

year you told us your

939

:

favorite restaurant in Norfolk.

940

:

What you know, what, right

now, and it could be anywhere,

941

:

Norfolk, Virginia Beach, wherever.

942

:

If you're going out with a couple of

your buddies on the squad, where's your

943

:

favorite place to go to get something?

944

:

Jason Wade: For me, it's

Sushi King right now.

945

:

I've found that I love sushi.

946

:

I've been trying to get my

teammates to come with me.

947

:

I got Emo to come with me a couple times.

948

:

I've got an RJ to come with me this year.

949

:

So those are the two.

950

:

I got Faison last year to come with me.

951

:

But I'd say right now it's

definitely Sushi King.

952

:

Mike: Great college restaurant,

because that all you can eat

953

:

deal is pretty hard to beat.

954

:

Jason Wade: Absolutely.

955

:

Absolutely.

956

:

Mike: All right, so, obviously

music and basketball kind

957

:

of go hand in hand together.

958

:

I want to know what is your favorite

thing to listen to pregame, and

959

:

then If you're trusting anyone with

the aux on the team, who is it?

960

:

Jason Wade: For me.

961

:

bEfore I play, I like to listen to like

a more low key vibe music to try to like

962

:

settle my emotions and my adrenaline.

963

:

So I've always liked listening

to like more Chris Brown or

964

:

even like old school R and B.

965

:

But on aux, I think Mo is probably

the most trusted guy with the aux.

966

:

We don't really let the younger

dudes get on hogs much cause I don't

967

:

want to listen to the new crap.

968

:

So we let Mo, Mo is normally

who's the guy on hogs.

969

:

And I think he does a pretty good job.

970

:

I think he diverses the

music and he loves future.

971

:

So we know a couple of future songs are

coming, but I think he does a good job

972

:

of getting everybody's favorite artists.

973

:

Aaron: Mike and I hear that the playlist

for the weight room is quite the thing.

974

:

What's your what's your favorite

tune that's on that playlist?

975

:

Jason Wade: I'd have to say,

976

:

I think Gunna, he's had a good

year as far as the music industry.

977

:

So I would say anything with off

Gunna's last album, probably back at it.

978

:

I would say that's my favorite one.

979

:

Mike: Alright I think

we're close to wrapping up.

980

:

Alright, since we're on the music

thing, we'll just, we'll close with

981

:

your favorite artist at the moment.

982

:

Is it Gunna, or...

983

:

Jason Wade: It's probably, it's

a tie between Gunna and Lil Baby.

984

:

I was a big Travis Scott fan.

985

:

He dropped Astroworld a couple years ago.

986

:

I really like that album, but his last

album, Utopia, I wasn't a big fan of it,

987

:

so Trav kind of dropped down a little bit

for me, so it's either Lil Baby or Travis

988

:

Scott, I mean Lil Baby or Gunna right now.

989

:

Mike: I get it.

990

:

I feel the same exact

way about Astroworld.

991

:

Jason Wade: Yeah.

992

:

Aaron: And I, I always have to talk

to Mike to try to stay up on, you

993

:

know, pop culture and what's going on.

994

:

Because my playlist is

more like the, like.

995

:

The Ricky Ronnie playlist, you know,

music Seattle from the nineties.

996

:

So it's always good to come on

these and hear these things.

997

:

And believe it or not, I go on and I check

out all these artists after the podcast.

998

:

And, you know, sometimes I put them in

my mix cause I'm like, Hey, this is good.

999

:

I would have never known about it.

:

00:53:29,667 --> 00:53:32,767

Jason Wade: Did you did you get

one that you liked in particular?

:

00:53:32,949 --> 00:53:35,519

Aaron: That would require me actually

really remembering it, but the next

:

00:53:35,519 --> 00:53:39,169

time we talk I'll let you know,

but I'm gonna Is now really going

:

00:53:39,169 --> 00:53:41,079

to show my age is gonna g u n a.

:

00:53:41,109 --> 00:53:41,769

How do you spell it?

:

00:53:41,809 --> 00:53:42,619

Because I'm going to look that up.

:

00:53:43,359 --> 00:53:43,689

All right.

:

00:53:44,057 --> 00:53:44,457

Jason Wade: Yes, sir.

:

00:53:44,597 --> 00:53:44,887

Yes, sir,

:

00:53:44,927 --> 00:53:45,477

just how you spell it?

:

00:53:45,677 --> 00:53:46,117

Yes, sir.

:

00:53:46,117 --> 00:53:46,692

Ha, Ha.

:

00:53:47,587 --> 00:53:49,847

Mike: I'm really interested

to see Aaron listen to Gunna.

:

00:53:49,897 --> 00:53:50,427

It's gonna be

:

00:53:50,457 --> 00:53:50,667

pretty

:

00:53:50,784 --> 00:53:52,664

Aaron: gonna rock it at

the tailgate this weekend.

:

00:53:52,784 --> 00:53:56,164

All right, we're gonna just have to

throw it in there Gary might be a little

:

00:53:56,222 --> 00:53:57,012

Jason Wade: you had a most.

:

00:53:57,304 --> 00:53:58,874

Aaron: you know, I'm gonna

listen to it tonight.

:

00:53:58,884 --> 00:53:59,354

My son.

:

00:53:59,354 --> 00:54:04,064

He's 15 He's probably gonna look at me

like what are you doing dad, but I'm game.

:

00:54:04,482 --> 00:54:06,622

Jason Wade: You gonna have the

most lit, you gonna have the

:

00:54:06,622 --> 00:54:08,272

most lit tent at the tailgate.

:

00:54:08,982 --> 00:54:10,342

Everybody gonna be over there.

:

00:54:10,694 --> 00:54:12,394

Aaron: So just like can't wait.
