People have grown accustomed to putting off happiness and waiting until retirement to pursue their interests. However, if you follow this philosophy, it may already be too late to realize your dreams. To take action now to live a life of purpose and fulfillment, a bucket list may be just what you need.
In this episode of The Mentee Podcast, Trav Bell, coach and speaker known as the "Bucket List Guy," shares his tips on creating a tangible bucket list that will lead to a fulfilling life. Trav discusses the roadblocks that most people face when completing their bucket list and how to overcome them.
Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation:
- Make a bucket list now; don’t wait until you're dying.
- Surround yourself with positive, proactive people.
- Your career should be a part of your life plan, not the other way around.
- Add simple, actionable items to your bucket list, not just travel plans.
- Don't let your resources limit you.
[02:05] Becoming the "Bucket List Guy"
Trav got his start in the fitness industry as a personal trainer in the early 1990s. He had toxic people in his life at one point, and everything went downhill, leading to mild depression.
He then embarked on a personal development journey, eventually working as a motivational speaker and coach. He mentioned having a bucket list in his first talk, hence his moniker.
[08:00] Living Life with Intention
Trav facilitates a specific exercise when he speaks at events. It's a wake-up call that our time on Earth is finite, and we must act now to achieve our goals and find happiness. Don't wait until you’re terminally ill to appreciate life.
[17:55] Busy Being Busy
We are often so preoccupied with checking off our daily to-do lists that we forget about our bucket lists — the things that bring us joy. Your job should give you the freedom to do whatever you want with your time and money. If you're short on resources, get creative!
[21:33] The Myth of the "401(K)"
Waiting until retirement to do what you want has become the norm, but this does not have to be your reality. A common misconception is that a bucket list is limited to travel plans or expensive excursions.
You can also use your bucket list to take concrete steps toward learning a new language or instrument. Trav has divided his bucket list into 12 categories, clarifying his objectives.
[32:14] A Positive Support System
Set an example for others by completing your bucket list. Rather than wasting time or being negative, shine a bright light on those around you. If you're a parent, encourage your children to adopt a positive, proactive attitude.
