This week, we're reading 1 Timothy 6:6-19. It's the passage that contains the famous line about the love of money being a root of all kinds of evil – or at least, that's the verse most of us remember.

But I don't think this passage is saying what I always assumed it was saying.

Paul certainly warns about the dangers of wealth, but I'm not convinced this is just a warning against having money. Near the end of the passage, he tells the wealthy to be generous, "thus storing up... the life that really is life." That's such an intriguing phrase.

What if this passage isn't asking how much we have, but what it's for? What if the real measure of wealth isn't how much we accumulate, but what our resources produce?
