the pomegranate is full of jewels
Speaker:
brilliant, blood-red pips that pop and

ooze juice that dribbles down a child’s chin
Speaker:
poured into sparkling clear cold water
Speaker:
fizzing, hissing, popping red,
Speaker:
chopping-board-staining finger-dyeing,
Speaker:
red sweet and tart memory-sustaining
Speaker:
the pomegranate falls at the soldier’s feet

bursting smoke rises from the orchard

as the pop echoes

across the valley
