Hate speech online against women is a growing problem, which perpetuates and exacerbates gender inequality. In fact, 1 in 10 women in Europe have experienced some kind of cyber violence since the age of 15.
And many of those who suffered it changed their habits in the online space by: censoring themselves online, opting out of participation and limiting their engagement in our societies.
On this EPP Group podcast episode, Karen Coleman delves deeper into this problem to better understand: What is it? What causes it? What effect does it have on us? What can social networks & EU legislation do to eradicate hate speech online against women?
She talks to - Roberta Metsola MEP, Sirpa Pietikäinen MEP, Councillor Yemi Adenuga, Founder of Sheroes Global, Asha Allen, Policy and Campaigns Officer at the European Women’s Lobby, Professor Sara De Vido, Law Professor at the University of Venice, expert on Legal Frameworks related to Violence Against Women, and Marisa Jiménez Martín, Director of Public Policy and Deputy Head of EU Affairs, Facebook - to answer these questions and give some solutions.
