When did you realize you were different?
In this episode of the Asian Detox Podcast TJ Wey speaks with guest Mary Grace Gardner about early influences on cultural identity as Asian Americans.
TJ and Mary Grace Gardner discuss how early experiences of “ostracizing” create formative questioning of identity, how the language of our cultural heritage plays a role in understanding ourselves within the wider culture we are embedded in, and some of the challenges we encounter with our parents, exploring in particular:
- The gap that can exist between our lives and our parents’ understanding of them
- The cultural and linguistic habits in our family of origin that influenced our differentness
- The impact of learning the language(s) of our cultural heritage
- Education, parental expectations and connecting to our personal path
- Diving into our family stories as a means of reconnection to our cultural heritage
