Speaker:

Over the summer.

2

:

I wrote a new keynote.

3

:

All about the power of internal

networking and how the most productive,

4

:

innovative, and engaged workers are.

5

:

Those who build.

6

:

Extremely broad, mutually beneficial

and uplifting relationships

7

:

within their organization.

8

:

Welcome to episode 1 66 of this shit

works a podcast dedicated to all

9

:

things, networking, relationship

building and business development.

10

:

I'm your host, Julie Brown.

11

:

Speaker author and networking coach.

12

:

And today I am discussing why

joining your company's ERG.

13

:

This is one of the quickest ways

to build cross silo networks

14

:

within your organization.

15

:

So the keynote was about 45 minutes

long and it outlines why it is so

16

:

important to not just retain employees,

but to create cultures of relationship

17

:

building within our organizations.

18

:

The reasons are vast and include

attracting new talent, retaining

19

:

talent, avoiding burnout, and loneliness.

20

:

In our employees.

21

:

And creating more competitive

and profitable companies.

22

:

In addition to laying out why we should

be encouraging internal networks and cross

23

:

silo, communication and collaboration.

24

:

I created a.

25

:

Framework, you know, for opportunities

that companies can take advantage

26

:

of to help create these connections.

27

:

And one of them is to create

groups within our office around

28

:

shared interests or identities.

29

:

So employee resource groups.

30

:

You know, companies benefit from

employee resource groups and a number of

31

:

different ways, but I want to highlight

the five reasons why you should join

32

:

an ERG and what you can get out of

getting involved in the ERG that are

33

:

available to you at your company.

34

:

Ready.

35

:

Okay.

36

:

One.

37

:

Access to senior leadership.

38

:

Most employee resource groups have

support from and direct communication

39

:

with senior leaders within the company.

40

:

And a number of senior leaders

will also be members of that ERG.

41

:

And what better way to get to know a

number of leaders within your company

42

:

and build relationships with them?

43

:

Too.

44

:

Networking, of course, that

was going to be one of them.

45

:

When you join an ERG based off of

an interest or identity, you get to

46

:

network with people from throughout

the company and across silos that you

47

:

might never have had access to before.

48

:

And, you know, you already have that

interest or identity in common as

49

:

the foundation of your relationship.

50

:

It's so important to get to know

and build relationships with as many

51

:

people as possible in your company.

52

:

And the employee resource groups

are a great way to do that.

53

:

Oh

54

:

three.

55

:

Professional development.

56

:

Most employee resource groups

have a budget for training

57

:

or professional development.

58

:

I've spoken to a number of

local national and international

59

:

and believe resource groups.

60

:

And those people within those

groups are sometimes the only

61

:

people within the company that get

access to my networking workshop.

62

:

Because that specific ERG has the

budget to bring in outside speakers.

63

:

For.

64

:

Uh, education and allyship.

65

:

By joining ERG that aren't

part of your specific identity.

66

:

You will become more educated in regards

to other interests and identities, and

67

:

you can also become a stronger ally and

advocate for others within your company.

68

:

This is important for everyone.

69

:

And five finally community.

70

:

ERG is we'll give you a safe

space for relationship building.

71

:

To ask questions to help with

navigating office politics and

72

:

also with professional and career

development, they really are a win-win.

73

:

So this was just five of the top reasons

why you should be joining an employee

74

:

resource group within your company.

75

:

There are so, so many more.

76

:

And I got to tell you over the years,

I've thoroughly enjoyed the work I've done

77

:

with various employee resource groups.

78

:

You know, women's employee resource,

groups, young professionals, employee

79

:

resource groups, specifically.

80

:

I've had a front row seat to the kind

of relationships and professional

81

:

development these groups can offer.

82

:

And so I encourage you to join one in your

firm and if your firm doesn't have any.

83

:

Then talk with leadership

about how you might be able to

84

:

create them within the office.

85

:

Really, I mean, it's a win-win

for you and for the company.

86

:

Okay.

87

:

Onto the drink of the week,

which I'm so excited about.

88

:

It is the smokey mez, Cal fig sour,

which I'm going to be upfront with you.

89

:

It takes a little bit of prep

work, but it's totally worth it.

90

:

Because this recipe is for our crowd.

91

:

So whip it up for any day of the dead

or how wean parties you have coming up.

92

:

Okay.

93

:

And parts of it can be made in advance.

94

:

Here's what you're going to need.

95

:

One and a third cups of simple syrup.

96

:

We've talked about how to

make this on the show before.

97

:

10 dried figs, halved.

98

:

One four inch piece of ginger

peeled and thinly sliced.

99

:

One whole bottle of mezcal, one in a

quarter cups, fresh lemon juice from

100

:

like about eight large lemons, three

fourths cup water, and a whole nutmeg.

101

:

You know what?

102

:

You don't need a whole number.

103

:

Like you just need graded number.

104

:

I don't know why they

put a hold on the mic.

105

:

So this is step one.

106

:

Ready?

107

:

We're going to make a ginger

ginger fig simple syrup.

108

:

What you're going to do is you're

gonna take the simple syrup.

109

:

The figs and the ginger and a small

soft payout pan and bring to a boil

110

:

over medium and then reduced to low.

111

:

And simmer until the figs are softened,

which will take about five minutes.

112

:

Then remove that from the heat

and let it cool for 30 minutes.

113

:

And then after it cools,

refrigerate it refrigerator it for

114

:

eight hours or up to overnight.

115

:

And then we're going to strain it.

116

:

We're going to pour that through a mesh.

117

:

So we get the, you know, the

ginger and the, the figs out of

118

:

it, that the solids out of it.

119

:

And then we have our ginger fig.

120

:

Syrup.

121

:

So we're going to store

that in a container.

122

:

You can store it up for a week, so you

see, you can prep this ahead of time.

123

:

And I am totally thinking

about bringing this to that the

124

:

neighborhood Halloween party.

125

:

So anyways, you can make that ginger

syrup up to a week in advance.

126

:

Now, when you want to make the

big picture of cocktail, this

127

:

is what you're going to do.

128

:

You're going to pour that whole

bottle of mescal into a pitcher.

129

:

Pour one and a quarter cups

of the fig ginger syrup.

130

:

You might have to put it through.

131

:

Um, Uh, mash again to get any

of the remaining pieces out.

132

:

But if you don't, you don't, it's fine.

133

:

Then add the lemon juice and

the water and then refrigerator.

134

:

Refrigerate it until it's chilled, which

will probably take about two hours.

135

:

Um, or again, you want to make it a

day before refrigerated overnight.

136

:

And then when you're ready to serve,

pour it over in a rocks glass, but

137

:

over one of those big ice cubes.

138

:

And so specifically for this, oh my God.

139

:

I'm so excited.

140

:

Specifically for this cocktail for the

Halloween party, I bought ice cube molds,

141

:

like big ice cube molds that are skulls.

142

:

Um, I found them at, at home

goods at TJ Maxx Marshall's home

143

:

goods, whatever it was anyway.

144

:

So there might still be some there,

but I'm so excited to have skulls.

145

:

Yeah.

146

:

As the ice for this anyways.

147

:

Um, I'm going off anyways.

148

:

Okay.

149

:

And then, you know, they say

as a garnish to just put some,

150

:

they say freshly grated, nutmeg.

151

:

Just sprinkle some nutmeg over it.

152

:

Okay.

153

:

Oh, my God.

154

:

I'm so excited about these.

155

:

, ice cubes.

156

:

All right friends.
