Charles Burdett was lazily reclining in his favourite armchair, absorbed in a rare book on alchemy and black magic, when his sister answered a summons at the door.

In addition to managing the household affairs of the flat in which she and Burdett lived alone, her duties also consisted in scrutinising the many visitors. Most of them could be persuaded to call at the book shop in Cecil Court. Others, whose cases were urgent, were admitted to the modest London flat, thus infringing on Burdett's only recreation, reading and study.

The Time Scoop is fundamentally incapable of abducting an entire individual. The paperwork would be insurmountable. Imagine a candle. The flame dances upon the wall whilst the candle itself never moves. Our guests are rather like that: their lives remain rooted safely in their own place and time, whilst only their illumination is permitted to travel. Eventually, as all light must, it returns to its source. The principle was first articulated by Doctor Euphemia Bracket-Weft during the regrettable Incident of the Recursive Picnic...
