And we're back, from opposite sides of the world, from opposite time zones and weather seasons. Today, Jill and Linda are talking about self-care in postpartum, notably after Jill recent completed the Sounds of Silence 5k event. We both understand that postpartum extends beyond the immediate post-birth phase and can last several years. In this episode we dive into a topic close to our hearts and talk about:
- Accepting help! It can be really be the hardest thing to do at the best of times.
- Nap when the baby naps. While this seems simple, the reality can often be far from it. The temptation to use this time to catch up on chores or indulge in some "me-time" activities often overrides the need for rest.
- Taking it slowly when and where possible and remembering the beauty and simplicity of stepping outside for fresh air and getting into the sun.
- Reminding yourself that this is a phase that will not be forever.
- Nutrition and water. If you're breastfeeding, staying hydrated is even more crucial.
- Carrying baby if this works for you. It allows you to keep your baby close while freeing up your hands to accomplish other tasks. Cooking dinner, cleaning, or even working becomes more manageable, and you can move freely without constantly worrying about where the baby is.
- Embracing the mess and recognising small victories.
- Leaning on your community, family, friends and support groups.
Both Jill and Linda are passionate about advocating for the need to find practical ways to care for yourself amidst the demanding early years of motherhood. Take a deep breath, sip some water, and give yourself that well-deserved break
