Laura:Here are four key points to ponder and we'll cover each of these

Laura:One of the most important ways to be sustainable in the
Laura:kitchen is to reduce food waste.
Laura:This can be achieved by planning meals in advance, by only what
Laura:you need and storing food properly and using up leftovers creatively.
Laura:When food is wasted, it not only wastes the resources that went into producing
Laura:it, but are also contributes to greenhouse gas emissions as it decomposes in land.
Laura:Choose sustainable ingredients.
Laura:Another way to be sustainable in the kitchen is to choose ingredients that
Laura:are produced in a sustainable manner.
Laura:This includes selecting foods that are grown using organic or
Laura:regenerative agriculture practices, choosing locally sourced ingredients
Laura:of cos and selecting plant-based.
Laura:Use energy efficient appliances.
Laura:Kitchen appliances can be a significant source of energy use in the home.
Laura:By choosing energy efficient appliances, you can reduce your energy consumption
Laura:and save money on your utility bills.
Laura:This includes selecting appliances with an energy star rating, which is designed to
Laura:use less energy than conventional models.
Laura:Reduce plastic use.
Laura:Finally, and this is a big one, reducing plastic use in the kitchen
Laura:is an important way to be sustainable.
Laura:You can do this by using reusable containers in bags, avoiding
Laura:single use plastics, like plastic wrap, and that's pretty difficult.
Laura:And disposable utensils and choosing products with minimal packaging.

Laura:Reducing food waste.
Laura:Food waste is a major contributor to green gas emissions as the food that is thrown
Laura:away decomposes and releases methane gas, which is a potent greenhouse gas according
Laura:to the food and agricultural organization of the United Nations around one.
Laura:Third of all food produced globally is wasted each year
Laura:in the United States, it's 40%.
Laura:So this not only wastes the resources that went into producing the food
Laura:like water and energy and land, but it also contributes to climate change.
Laura:So now to reduce food waste in the kitchen, I've got
Laura:a few strategies for you.
Laura:First, plan your meals in advance and.
Laura:Only what you need.
Laura:This can help reduce impulse buys and ensure that you use up
Laura:all the food that you purchase.
Laura:Planning meals is also a really good practice if you're
Laura:trying to eat more healthfully.
Laura:If you don't have potato chips, you won't eat them second store food
Laura:properly to extend its shelf life.
Laura:This includes keeping fruits and vegetables in the refrigerator,
Laura:storing grains and nuts in airtight containers, and freezing
Laura:meats and other perishable items.
Laura:Finally use up leftovers creatively, and this is my favorite one.
Laura:This could mean turning leftover vegetables into a soup or stew, or
Laura:using leftover rice to make fried rice.
Laura:Now for me, I throw almost everything into my morning egg white omelets.
Laura:And don't forget to compost for your garden.
Laura:Use those scraps as fertilizer.
Laura:By reducing food waste in the kitchen, you can not only help reduce your
Laura:impact on the environment, but also save money on your grocery bill.
Laura:It's a win-win situation.

Laura:a sustainable kitchen, but what makes an ingredient sustainable?
Laura:Well, here are a few tips.
Laura:The ingredients have to be produced using environmentally friendly practices that
Laura:minimize the impact on natural resources, making them better for the environment.
Laura:They generate less waste, which reduces the carbon footprint
Laura:associated with food production.
Laura:Also, sustainable ingredients are often healthier for people to eat.
Laura:They're free from harmful chemicals and antibiotics and hormones
Laura:that can affect your health and sustainable ingredients often.
Laura:Local communities by promoting small scale agriculture and local food systems.
Laura:Okay, so you're going to the grocery store and you wanna buy sustainable food.
Laura:What do you look for?
Laura:Well, here are a few things.
Laura:Choose organic produce.
Laura:Organic produce is grown without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers,
Laura:which reduces the amount of chemicals that end up in our food.
Laura:And.
Laura:Organic farming practices also prioritize soil health and biodiversity, which helps
Laura:to maintain the long-term productivity of the land, which is very important.
Laura:Select local and seasonal ingredients.
Laura:Choosing locally grown and seasonal ingredients can significantly reduce
Laura:the carbon footprint of your food.
Laura:Food that is ship long distances requires more energy and resources to t.
Laura:Which contributes to greenhouse gas emissions.
Laura:In contrast, locally grown food often requires less energy to transport
Laura:and supports local farmers and communities look for sustainably
Laura:raised meat and dairy products.
Laura:Meat and dairy products that are raised sustainably are produced using farming
Laura:practices that prioritize animal welfare and minimize environmental.
Laura:This includes avoiding the use of antibiotics and hormones and providing
Laura:animals with access to pasture and fresh.
Laura:For plant-based proteins, plant-based proteins like lentils, beans,
Laura:tofu, sustainable alternative to meat and dairy products.
Laura:Plant-based proteins require less land, water and energy to produce than
Laura:animal bill based protein, which it reduces their environmental impact.

Laura:Conserving water in the kitchen not only helps the environment, but also
Laura:saves you money on your water bill.
Laura:Here's some ideas about how to conserve water in your kitchen.
Laura:Don't let the tap run unnecessarily.
Laura:Turn off the water while you're washing dishes.
Laura:Rinse your dishes deliberately.
Laura:Fix leaks promptly.
Laura:Fix leaks promptly.
Laura:Check for leaks in your kitchen, sink, dishwasher, and refrigerator
Laura:Waterline leaks can waste water more quickly than you would think.
Laura:So get them fixed.
Laura:Use your dishwasher efficiently only run your dishwasher when it's full.
Laura:And use eco mode or water saving mode if available.
Laura:Scrape your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher instead of rinsing.
Laura:Hand wash dishes in a basin instead of washing dishes under a running
Laura:tap, which I see a lot, don't do that.
Laura:Use a basin filled with soapy water to wash them and a basin with
Laura:clean water to rinse, reuse water.
Laura:Use leftover water from boiling pasta or steaming vegetables to water plants.

Laura:Look for products that are biodegradable, non-toxic, and made from natural
Laura:ingredients, and if possible, have them come in a reusable container.
Laura:You can also make your own cleaning products using things like vinegar,
Laura:baking soda and lemon juice.
Laura:Now when you're purchasing kitchen appliances, choose energy efficient
Laura:options that will save the planet some energy and use some money
Laura:by lowering your utility bills.
Laura:By choosing sustainable products, you can reduce waste and save money
Laura:while also supporting the environment.
Laura:Okay, now it's top tool time.
Laura:Our top tool is reusable food storage.
Laura:These bags are eco-friendly.
Laura:They're made of food grade storage, plastic.
Laura:You can use them again and again, and you'll help reduce the impact
Laura:on our landfills and oceans.
Laura:They're cost effective, more money up front, less money in the long run.
Laura:They're convenient.
Laura:They're BPA free, and they come in all kinds of sizes.
Laura:Our top tool is reusable food storage.
Laura:So I touched on this earlier, but I don't think I can stress it enough by as much
Laura:as you can locally supporting locally produced sustainable food is a great
Laura:way to support your sustainable kitchen.
Laura:There are so many benefits beyond lower environmental impact and
Laura:supporting your neighbors, but you do wanna support your food producing
Laura:neighbors so they can keep producing.
Laura:Remember that even though you're one person, it all counts
Laura:and small moves really add.
Laura:Reducing food waste using sustainable products and supporting local and
Laura:sustainable food can make a big impact on the environment and your wallet.
