Your mind is not broken for being loud. It is a sky, and the thoughts are weather crossing it.
About 14 minutes with Steven Webb's calm voice.
A calm mind is not a busy mind that finally shut up. It is muddy water left alone until it clears. So we watch the thoughts pass like clouds, and notice the game they play: the second you catch one, the mind slips you another. Watch that game long enough and it gets funny rather than frightening.

Stevens new course: Finding Peace in Everyday Life (you choose how much to pay)
Welcome to a little piece for an overactive mind.
Steven Webb:So we'll begin just by finding a comfortable position and
Steven Webb:just allowing your body to settle in.
Steven Webb:Just feel the support beneath you.
Steven Webb:And you may want to take a deep breath just to connect the mind and the body together.
Steven Webb:Then simply allow your breath to be what it is.
Steven Webb:You don't have to get involved in your breath. Your body's been breathing for a long time. Without you getting
Steven Webb:involved.
Steven Webb:Just become aware.
Steven Webb:And we just give our muscles permission to relax as well.
Steven Webb:Similarly to your breath, you don't have to force them, you don't have to do anything. Each
Steven Webb:muscle knows how to relax, they're just waiting for you to give them permission. So
Steven Webb:starting from the top of your head, working all the way down for your body. Just allowing the muscles to
Steven Webb:relax.
Steven Webb:Allowing the face and the ears.
Steven Webb:Your chin, your neck and your arms. Your
Steven Webb:shoulders down your back.
Steven Webb:And your bum and your legs.
Steven Webb:Allowing each muscle as they go down just to relax a little bit more each time. Breathing in calm. Breathing
Steven Webb:out relax
Steven Webb:And we don't have to do anything.
Steven Webb:We just have to be aware.
Steven Webb:And that's simply enough.
Steven Webb:And as you're settling in, just let's reflect on a little bit of wisdom.
Steven Webb:The mind is like water.
Steven Webb:When it's turbulent,
Steven Webb:it's difficult to see.
Steven Webb:When it's calm, everything becomes clear.
Steven Webb:This simple yet profound statement reminds us of the power of a nice calm mind.
Steven Webb:Often our minds are like a stormy sea,
Steven Webb:with thoughts crashing around each other,
Steven Webb:creating noise and confusion.
Steven Webb:It's very much like a pond with muddy water.
Steven Webb:But beneath the surface there's always this depth of stillness and clarity. If we just allow it to settle
Steven Webb:in.
Steven Webb:And in our busy lives, especially nowadays, we often mistake mental activity for productivity
Steven Webb:and intelligence. It's
Steven Webb:just thinking. It's just overactive minds.
Steven Webb:True wisdom often emerges from this stillness. You
Steven Webb:cannot very often think yourself out of problems or... Think your way into trying to remember something
Steven Webb:or do something. It's when we take a step back and relax and allow the mind to have space. That's
Steven Webb:when the wisdom and clarity appears.
Steven Webb:Now let's explore a way that we can have this peace amidst all the mental activity. So
Steven Webb:imagine your mind is a vast sky
Steven Webb:And your thoughts are like clouds passing through the sky. I know this is a very common meditation, but it
Steven Webb:really does work. And it's simple. And we can all imagine this huge, vast sky. And we've all seen
Steven Webb:clouds. And
Steven Webb:all the clouds are different. There's never two the same clouds. Just the same as we think we have relentless,
Steven Webb:the same thought. They're not. Every time you have a similar thought, they're subtly different.
Steven Webb:You know, some of the thoughts like light and fluffy clouds and others a little more dark and heavy and
Steven Webb:don't leave any room for light. But
Steven Webb:regardless of their nature, they're all temporary. They're passing. Some of them travelling a little slower than others.
Steven Webb:And as you just sit here, just begin to notice the thoughts as they arrive.
Steven Webb:Don't try to change them or do anything with them.
Steven Webb:Don't even try to push them away. Just observe them.
Steven Webb:No different than just being aware of your breath. You're just aware of your thoughts.
Steven Webb:Just like you're watching clouds drift away in the sky.
Steven Webb:Very often at this point we notice how particularly active our mind is and how much it jumps from one
Steven Webb:thought to another. From one story, one narrative to another.
Steven Webb:It doesn't seem to stay on a single thought. As soon as you notice the thought, the mind's like, ah,
Steven Webb:you've got me. And it brings up another a thought to try to trick you.
Steven Webb:It's like a game of cat and mouse. Of awareness and thought. Ah, I'm aware of
Steven Webb:you. And the thought goes, are you? And it changes it and it morphs into something different. And
Steven Webb:you can almost do this as playing a game.
Steven Webb:Just being aware of you doing it. Being aware of the games that the thoughts play.
Steven Webb:And when you notice the thought takes your attention a little too much. And you start to go down in
Steven Webb:the thought process and Following the thought. Just be aware, smile and thank you. I'm just coming back
Steven Webb:and gonna watch you carry on
Steven Webb:because often we become that thought when
Steven Webb:we're never really that thought. We're just the witness of it but it sometimes feels so real and so true
Steven Webb:that we almost think that thought's us.
Steven Webb:You can say that mantra in your mind or a little affirmation. I have thoughts but I'm not those thoughts.
Steven Webb:I have thoughts. But I'm not those thoughts.
Steven Webb:And your mind really is like the big vast cloud. It
Steven Webb:can hold everything. It's
Steven Webb:as big as the sky as big as the universe. It's
Steven Webb:as big as you want it to be.
Steven Webb:And your mind isn't hurt by any of the thoughts. Your body isn't hurt. Just no different than the sky
Steven Webb:is affected with a cloud going through it.
Steven Webb:The sky is still there. The universe is still there.
Steven Webb:It's just a cloud. It's just passing through.
Steven Webb:And your true nature underneath all this just remains at peace. Awareness is almost always at peace. I
Steven Webb:say almost always because I've never known it not to be at peace. But
Steven Webb:maybe one day I'll find where awareness isn't just, ah, just sitting in this moment.
Steven Webb:Just little spaces between thoughts.
Steven Webb:Just little
Steven Webb:gaps between my words. Just give you a moment of quiet.
Steven Webb:And if you leave it too long, a thought jumps in.
Steven Webb:Almost like the thoughts like my turn. I'm ready.
Steven Webb:And in these moments a little clarity, you can repeat silently to yourself. I am not my
Steven Webb:thoughts. I am the peaceful awareness behind my thoughts.
Steven Webb:I am not my thoughts. I am the peaceful awareness behind my thoughts.
Steven Webb:And stillness is always available to me. Even when the mind is feeling overactive and thinking a lot.
Steven Webb:Stillness is always available to me. Even when the mind is being overactive.
Steven Webb:So now gradually expand your awareness to beyond your thoughts. And notice the sounds around you, the sensations
Steven Webb:in your body. And
Steven Webb:the space in the room.
Steven Webb:And as we prepare to end this meditation, let's take a moment to cultivate a loving kindness. I
Steven Webb:always like to end the meditations on this because it sets us up for the compassion, caring and open-hearted people
Steven Webb:that we are. But
Steven Webb:it's always wonderful to remind ourselves.
Steven Webb:Place your hand on your heart and say, May I be peaceful. May
Steven Webb:I be at ease. May
Steven Webb:I be kind to myself.
Steven Webb:May I be peaceful. May I be at ease. May I be kind to myself.
Steven Webb:Now we turn that around and we reflect it on the world. May we all be peaceful.
Steven Webb:May we all be at ease.
Steven Webb:May we all be kind to ourselves.
Steven Webb:And when you see them and feel them really sink in, it
Steven Webb:makes a profound difference. May we all be peaceful. May we all be at ease. And
Steven Webb:may we all be kind to ourselves.
Steven Webb:And now let's come back from five and with each number you'll become more alert and more aware of your
Steven Webb:surroundings. So five, begin to wiggle your arms and wiggle your toes. Four, take a deeper breath.
Steven Webb:Three, become aware of the space around you.
Steven Webb:Gently open your eyes and
Steven Webb:take a moment to stretch and move in any way that feels good.
Steven Webb:Welcome back. Remember the peace that you've experienced is always available to you. Just gotta
Steven Webb:step back and see it. Step back and feel it.
Steven Webb:Beneath the surface of your thoughts, your presence and willingness to explore the inner world is deeply appreciated.
Steven Webb:I hope with these feelings and this openness you can carry them throughout the day and just realise that there
Steven Webb:is peace available to you. Just step back and watch the thoughts. Watch the chaos happen
Steven Webb:and it'll just make a huge difference.
Steven Webb:Thank you. I'm Steven Webb and... I've also got another podcast, Stillness in the Storms, that I bring them both
Steven Webb:free to help you through difficult times. Open your heart and open your mind and just find a little
