Episode 53 - Scott's amazing Barn on the Bay wedding & Hannah's final few days before a big marquee wedding

🎙️ All Things Weddings – Episode 53

Hosts: Scott (wedding photographer) & Hannah (wedding planner)

🗓️ What’s Up This Week?

Hannah’s gearing up for a BIG 2-day marquee wedding this weekend – cue the pre-wedding nerves and weather-watching! 🌧️☀️

Scott just shot an epic wedding at Barn on the Bay, and he takes us on a deep dive into the day – full of personality, rain-dodging, and killer moments!

📸 Real Wedding Spotlight: Barn on the Bay

Scott shares all the fun (and chaos!) from a wedding at Barn on the Bay, and it's packed with inspo and tips for couples:

🌦️ Weather Woes & Wins

  • Rain was forecast (of course 🙄), but it held off until after dark – winning!
  • Outdoor ceremony just dodged the drizzle. The venue held off setting out the seats to keep them dry — genius move 💡
  • Always consider: rain 10 mins before = wet seats during!

🚜 Quirky Arrival

  • The couple and guests rode to the ceremony on a vintage tractor and trailer. YES, really!
  • Adds charm + great photo ops 📸
  • Bonus: Guests LOVED it!

🎺 Ceremony Magic

  • A family member played trumpet as the couple were announced – cue the cinematic vibes 🎶
  • Scott scoped out the perfect angle beforehand to capture the trumpet and couple in one epic frame #documentaryweddingphotographystyle
  • They even did two aisle walks: one with trumpet, then circled back for the confetti moment 🌸

💡 Planning Nuggets

  • Split the ceremony and confetti moments – enjoy each one fully!
  • Take a private breather as a couple post-ceremony – soak it all in 🥰

💕 DIY Seating Plan Love

  • Guest seating: A copper frame with strings and photos of each guest – people had a blast finding their pic and laughing at the memories 😄
  • Bonus: Everyone got to take their photo home as a keepsake 🖼️

📷 Picture-Perfect Details

  • Prep photos in a mini barn, total privacy ✅
  • Candid shots of the groom setting up decor and guests arriving 🧑‍🌾
  • Special moment: The bride took time before heading to the ceremony to hold hands with each bridesmaid and her mum – heartfelt, tear-jerking moment 🥹

🍾 Reception Revelry

🥂 Speeches with a Twist

  • They split speeches: two outside pre-dinner, two inside later = keeps energy fresh & guests engaged 🗣️

🎤 Entertainment Goals

  • Live band with sax, trumpet, singer, drums, guitar – basically, a party dream team 🎷🎸💃
  • Also had singing waiters to ramp up the energy – guests loved it!

🧀 Say “Cheese!” (Literally)

  • Instead of a cake, they had a cheese toweryes, the savory kind 🧀 #cheeseloversunite

🕺 Silent Disco After-Party

  • Across from the venue in a field = Silent Disco Tent 🎧
  • Kept the party going till 1am without breaking any noise rules
  • A Friend of the couple was the DJ, everyone danced under the stars 🌌
  • “It looked mad – but it worked SO well!”

🛠️ Planner’s Prep: Hannah’s Weekend Wedding Preview

  • Guest count: 119 Saturday / 200 Sunday = TWO full-on days of celebration! 🎉
  • Venue: Marquee wedding with loads of moving parts
  • Hannah’s checklist:
  • Final calls with suppliers 📞
  • Print & distribute updated function sheets 📋
  • Oversee marquee setup and layout logistics 🏕️
  • Coordinate everything from bar stock to linens & last-minute tweaks
  • On-site from sunrise to starlight – planner life 💪

🧠 Takeaways for Couples

  • 🌧️ Always plan for weather – especially for outdoor weddings
  • 🧑‍🤝‍🧑 DIY personal touches (like photo seating plans) make a BIG impression
  • 📷 Trust your suppliers to capture and execute your vision – they’ve got your back!
  • 🎉 Split or mix up traditional moments (like speeches) to keep things fresh
  • 🕯️ Take quiet moments for yourself – even 2 minutes with your crew or your partner can mean the world

Transcripts

Scott: Hello, welcome to All Things Weddings. I'm Scott, the photographer behind Scott Carney Photography.

Hannah: And I'm Hannah, the wedding planner behind Hannah Rachel Weddings. We're here to help you navigate your wedding planning, to freely share tips, insights and behind the scenes so you hopefully feel less overwhelmed and stress free while planning your gorgeous wedding.

Scott: Want in on all our tips and to listen to us chat to some of our favourite suppliers? Well then let's dive straight in. So hey Hannah, how's your week been?

Hannah: Hi! It's been really good, thank you. We've had another bank holiday—I can’t believe how many we’ve had! I’m nervous and excited; my first wedding of the season is this weekend. It’s a two-day marquee wedding and I’m just hoping for dry weather during the drinks reception. But no matter what, it’ll be gorgeous.

Scott: Yeah, it’s half-term here, so it’s been hectic with the kids. We're away next week, so just catching up on work in between. I had a wedding at Barn on the Bay on Saturday. If you want more info on the venue, check out episode 37 where I spoke with their coordinators.

Hannah: That venue looks amazing. How did it go?

Scott: Really well, actually. The weather was dicey—forecast said rain, but it cleared up by mid-morning. Just windy. They went ahead with the outdoor ceremony. The couple were determined—umbrellas ready and all.

Hannah: Oh, perfect! That’s often all couples want: just a dry window for the ceremony.

Scott: Exactly. The ceremony space is about a 5-minute walk from the barn, but they hired a vintage tractor and trailer for shuttles. Made for some amazing photo ops! I also had a workout running to the ceremony site for shots before it rained.

Hannah: Love it! Any memorable details?

Scott: So many. The seating plan was brilliant—a copper frame with strings and each guest’s photo. Super personal and guests loved it. Also, Abby Collins did makeup—she did my wife’s makeup, actually. Didn’t even realise it was her at first!

Hannah: That’s such a sweet full-circle moment.

Scott: Right? The ceremony itself was lovely. A family member played trumpet for the aisle exit. I scoped out a perfect angle to get both him and the couple in the frame. Then, they did a confetti aisle walk after a loop round the dunes. Nice way to break it up and enjoy both moments.

Hannah: I always tell couples—take 5 minutes post-ceremony for just you two. Helps avoid a receiving line and gives you a moment to breathe.

Scott: They did that! Then it was speeches—two outside, two inside. Broke it up nicely. Food was buffet-style. Singing waiters kept energy up. And the band? Incredible. Full setup: trumpet, sax, keys, vocals. Faye Shearer Music and Livewire Band UK—amazing energy.

Hannah: Sounds like such a vibe! How many guests?

Scott: About 150. They even had a silent disco after party across from the barn. One of their mates DJ’d and everyone danced under the stars. It was brilliant!

Hannah: I love a silent disco! Such a fun way to keep the party going without noise complaints.

Scott: Exactly. After 1 a.m. it started drizzling, and I wrapped. Long day—started at 10 a.m. But an amazing couple and such good vibes.

Hannah: It sounds magical. I'm kicking off my season with a two-day marquee wedding this weekend. Around 120 guests Saturday and 200 Sunday—it’s the bride’s parents' day! We’ve been tweaking plans due to the wet site but all is set. Fingers crossed for dry skies!

Scott: Sounds like a big one. Hope it all goes smoothly. Maybe we should do a future episode taking listeners through a full planning journey start to finish?

Hannah: Yes! That would be so helpful, especially for marquee weddings. Behind-the-scenes is where the magic is!

Scott: Good luck this weekend, Hannah!

Hannah: Thanks, Scott! And to everyone listening—have an amazing week. Bye!

Scott: Bye!
