Speaker:

Microphone (HyperX SoloCast)-1:

You're listening to episode 43 of

2

:

burning brightly mind, body, and soul.

3

:

This is burning brightly, a podcast

for Christian moms who are feeling

4

:

called to build a business and

share their light with the world.

5

:

I'm Bonnie Wiscombe, a life

coach, mom, and entrepreneur.

6

:

And I'm honored to be your guide as you

face this business building adventure full

7

:

of highs, lows, and everything in between.

8

:

This is where we help each

other find the courage to shine.

9

:

Microphone (HyperX SoloCast):

Hello friends.

10

:

Welcome back today.

11

:

I've got an episode for you about our,

basically two most important possessions,

12

:

and that is our mind and our body.

13

:

Now we actually have another main

entity that we're going to talk

14

:

about today, and that is our soul.

15

:

And we're going to talk about how the

three of these kind of play together.

16

:

Sometimes don't play so nicely

and how we can better align

17

:

them for our best possible life.

18

:

So the brain and the body.

19

:

R four using they're very efficient.

20

:

They are very useful.

21

:

We use them to accomplish things.

22

:

And the soul or our spirit is what.

23

:

Gives us life and gives

us purpose in this life.

24

:

So the body and the brain

have so many uses, we can run.

25

:

We can think we can brainstorm.

26

:

We can build businesses.

27

:

We can eat, we can hug, we can sleep.

28

:

We can do so many amazing

things with our body and brain.

29

:

The soul or the spirit is a

little bit less understood.

30

:

And hopefully we can be a little

bit clear about what its role is in

31

:

our life by the end of this episode.

32

:

So the body and the brain

are these super great tools.

33

:

They are.

34

:

These.

35

:

Absolutely incredible creations that we

can't even really begin to understand.

36

:

We have some amazing, incredible

genius doctors and scientists out

37

:

there that still don't understand.

38

:

Even the basic.

39

:

Workings of our brain,

40

:

my daughter goes to the neurologist

and I'll ask questions and she

41

:

goes, we don't really know.

42

:

We don't really know that either.

43

:

We don't really like we're doing

the best we can to understand

44

:

these incredible creations we've

been given, but they are complex.

45

:

They are also bent on survival.

46

:

That is the body.

47

:

And brain's number one.

48

:

Goal is to survive.

49

:

It wants to do so by being lazy and happy.

50

:

That's how you survive.

51

:

Minimum exertion, maximum pleasure.

52

:

That will keep me alive until tomorrow.

53

:

Okay.

54

:

Now the soul we see in.

55

:

A much less concrete way.

56

:

We see our soul in our intuition.

57

:

Or inspiration, those gut feelings.

58

:

We see our soul and we have a deep

connection with another human being.

59

:

Have you ever felt that.

60

:

We know that our soul is good.

61

:

It is eternal.

62

:

It is like pure light

and it's so powerful.

63

:

I believe that our soul never wants

to benefit at another being's expense.

64

:

That's our mind that kind

of gets in the way and.

65

:

Causes us to act in

ways we aren't proud of.

66

:

Now the body to the soul is

kind of like close to the body.

67

:

So close are necessary and useful.

68

:

They help us do what we want to do.

69

:

It's kind of hard to go hike

a mountain with some friends.

70

:

If you're naked.

71

:

But close, just like the body can

also be constricting or binding.

72

:

And it can hold us back

from our potential.

73

:

So think about, for example, what

you can do in tennis shoes and

74

:

leggings versus what you can do

in high heels on a tight skirt.

75

:

There's a big difference

between what you're capable of.

76

:

In comfortable clothes versus restricting

clothes, same thing with the body.

77

:

The body can make it.

78

:

So our soul is more capable of good.

79

:

Beautiful things or it can make it harder.

80

:

It can kind of become a prison for us.

81

:

I personally think that a huge goal

of life here on earth is to learn, to

82

:

use our soul and our body in tandem.

83

:

Each helping each other because

they are both essential.

84

:

There are some tenants of Christianity

that believed the body is kind of evil,

85

:

like this prison that we're stuck in.

86

:

And I don't believe that I believe it

is good and wonderful and beautiful,

87

:

but it has to be taught how to act.

88

:

Appropriately

89

:

because when the body's passions

and pleasures get out of control.

90

:

Then the soul suffers.

91

:

We talk about how we want

to overcome our natural man.

92

:

We want to become like God, by

pushing away the things of the world

93

:

and tuning into that spirit that

is teaching us how to be that God.

94

:

So, how do we put the soul back in charge?

95

:

How do we make sure that the soul

is in charge of the brand, the body?

96

:

Well, the first answer is coaching.

97

:

Of course.

98

:

And one of the first answers doing

thought work, controlling that narrative.

99

:

Uh, ensuring that our mind is being

managed and we are aware of why our body

100

:

reacts in certain ways, like why the

nervous system reacts in a certain way.

101

:

Now being a human is who we are.

102

:

There's no shame.

103

:

In.

104

:

Being the way that we are.

105

:

Sometimes we think we're broken,

because we react a certain way or we

106

:

have some sort of traumatic response

107

:

or we're imperfect in some way

that that is not a shameful thing.

108

:

That is just life as a human being with

a mind, a body and a soul, trying to

109

:

constantly work together to our greatest.

110

:

Good.

111

:

But we do have a responsibility to

do this, to manage our minds in our

112

:

bodies, to teach them to work together.

113

:

Otherwise.

114

:

We're going to not fulfill our

potential and we're going to

115

:

hurt other people in the process.

116

:

We have to teach them to work together

within appropriate bounds, within.

117

:

A set of rules and restrictions.

118

:

So, how do we put the soul

in charge of the body?

119

:

We talked about it being

in charge of the brain.

120

:

We do thought work.

121

:

We manage our mind.

122

:

How do we put it in charge of the body?

123

:

By controlling.

124

:

Our appetites, our

passions, our pleasures.

125

:

think about how much chaos happens to

your life and the lives of those you love.

126

:

When you are addicted to, or not

able to control desires for food.

127

:

Drugs, alcohol sex, other things

that can get rapidly out of control.

128

:

They destroy lives literally and

figuratively, those things that

129

:

are very addicting, make the

body being charged of the soul.

130

:

That's not what we want.

131

:

We want to make sure we manage those

desires so that the soul stays in charge.

132

:

And of course it's not just substances

like alcohol and drugs and things and

133

:

food, sugar, But behaviors sometimes

oversleeping or over Netflixing or

134

:

over scrolling are ways that we allow

our body to just sit in comfort.

135

:

And not do the hard thing

that is controlling itself.

136

:

Now, some of these things that

are great desires, like food

137

:

and sex, bring us great joy.

138

:

They're there for a reason.

139

:

We actually need both of them

to survive as a species, but

140

:

they can also destroy us.

141

:

Many of us don't have a lot of vices.

142

:

But we all have to eat food.

143

:

And so I see this a lot in food, is that

we use it as kind of a buffery mechanism.

144

:

We use it to put between ourselves and

negative emotions and we just stuff our

145

:

face instead of controlling ourselves or.

146

:

Confronting the emotions that are painful.

147

:

be really cautious of that one

because the downside to having.

148

:

An addiction with food or unhealthy

relationship with food is that you

149

:

can't eliminate food from your life.

150

:

Like you can alcohol or drugs or

these other addictive substances.

151

:

You really have to manage it.

152

:

I think that a simple way to put this is

that addictions are the body's pleasures.

153

:

Being prioritized over the souls.

154

:

Purpose.

155

:

So I'll say that again.

156

:

Addictions are the body's pleasures

prioritized over the souls purpose.

157

:

Addictions are a distraction.

158

:

They are trying to distract us from

our life's work, because if we can sit

159

:

in addictions and just feel comfort

over and over and over, we don't

160

:

ever go out there and do hard things.

161

:

We don't learn to embrace

the difficult, the suck.

162

:

The hard stuff.

163

:

We just want to be comfortable.

164

:

So I think our constant goal

needs to be putting the soul

165

:

in charge, making the soul, the

master and the body, the servant.

166

:

And don't let those rules get mixed up.

167

:

That's where we see a lot of problems.

168

:

I see that much of the greatest

suffering that happens in mankind

169

:

in general comes from this mix-up.

170

:

Think about abuse or rape or murder

or violence or these horrible

171

:

things we see happening on the news.

172

:

War.

173

:

These come from allowing the body's wants

like revenge or power or sex to overcome.

174

:

The soul's needs, which of course

the soul is always quieter,

175

:

the soul whispers, the body screams.

176

:

I'm hungry.

177

:

I want that I need that

the soul is not so loud.

178

:

We have to quiet down the body in

order to hear what the soul needs

179

:

and to put it in communion with God.

180

:

God will tell us what the soul needs.

181

:

If we're listening.

182

:

I have another episode, episode six

is called embracing the bad stuff.

183

:

If you want to learn a little bit

more about how important it is that we

184

:

have both good and bad in the world,

that dichotomy of right versus wrong.

185

:

And how to embrace some

of the negative stuff too.

186

:

Reach your highest potential goal.

187

:

Listen to that one.

188

:

It's another short one,

but it is great too.

189

:

We are complex human beings who were

created by an eternal amazing God.

190

:

And he's given us this challenge of

making this mind, body, soul connection.

191

:

Work together so that we can

become these incredible beings.

192

:

Anytime we allow our mind or our body

193

:

to wreak havoc on our soul.

194

:

We will be living below our potential.

195

:

A few questions to ask yourself, to see if

maybe this is something you struggle with.

196

:

Where is your body holding back your soul?

197

:

Is there anything that you feel out

of control of in regards to your body

198

:

or even your mind, maybe a perpetual

victim mentality or self-criticism or

199

:

other things that come up in your brain

regularly and hold you back from listening

200

:

to what God has in store for you.

201

:

Are there addictions that you

see yourself struggle with?

202

:

And again, these could be something.

203

:

That you don't necessarily.

204

:

Think of when you say

addictions, they could be.

205

:

Being on Instagram too long,

206

:

maybe reading too many

novels or too much TV.

207

:

Is there anything that your body is taking

comfort in that could be scaled back on.

208

:

Are there substances or behaviors

that you consistently use as a buffer?

209

:

Remember a buffer is something we

put between us a negative emotion.

210

:

So I find myself using

sugar a lot for this.

211

:

When I have negative emotion come up,

I think I needed some hot chocolate.

212

:

I need a cookie.

213

:

I need something that's going

to give me a hit of dopamine.

214

:

So I don't have to feel these other

emotions that are coming up for me.

215

:

Now, when it comes to negative emotions.

216

:

They don't feel good.

217

:

I get it.

218

:

Nobody wants to sit and

feel shame, embarrassment.

219

:

Fear loneliness, betrayal.

220

:

Any of those things?

221

:

But they are a part of

the human experience.

222

:

And when they come up, there are

other ways to get comfort for them.

223

:

Other than these substances and

behaviors, we need community.

224

:

We need family, we need love

and connection, and we need God.

225

:

We need something greater than us to look

to, to help us through these hard times.

226

:

Just be aware of when you

are substituting these good.

227

:

Ways of finding comfort

in hard times with.

228

:

The counterfeit substitutions, like

food, drugs, alcohol, et cetera, the

229

:

things that will be destructive to

you, look to your family, your friends,

230

:

your God, for comfort in those times.

231

:

And then sometimes we just have to allow

the negative emotion to move through us.

232

:

There are so many opportunities to

do this in life that will strengthen

233

:

us and help us reach our dreams.

234

:

A few ideas are fasting.

235

:

Do you ever try to fast?

236

:

I do this.

237

:

About once a month for spiritual reasons.

238

:

And it is hard.

239

:

You guys going without food for?

240

:

I.

241

:

I really only do it for about

half a day two-thirds of a day.

242

:

It's difficult and you're hungry

and you're whiny and you get cranky.

243

:

And I find myself.

244

:

Really having to manage my mind

when my stomach is growling all day.

245

:

That is a really, really

great experience for.

246

:

Allowing yourself to feel negative

emotions so that you can get stronger.

247

:

Speaking of getting stronger.

248

:

What about strenuous exercise?

249

:

Walking is great.

250

:

Of course, a nice leisurely swim is

great for keeping your body active, but

251

:

when you really push your body, you get

yourself into a place that feels awful.

252

:

And feeling awful makes us stronger.

253

:

It makes us be able to handle hard things.

254

:

I see all the trend with

the cold plunging nowadays.

255

:

I personally haven't tried it yet.

256

:

I don't know that I'm brave enough.

257

:

But this I believe is one of the benefits

of it is allowing yourself to feel awful

258

:

so that, you know, you can do it again.

259

:

You can do hard things.

260

:

You can feel negative emotion.

261

:

Let's go back to food.

262

:

If food tends to trip you up, or you

feel like you have a mild addiction

263

:

there, what about eliminating

really addictive substances?

264

:

Like flour or sugar?

265

:

That can be a very difficult thing

to do, especially when you're used to

266

:

getting your comfort from those things.

267

:

How about building a business, anybody

trying to build the business and

268

:

feeling lots of negative emotion.

269

:

Of course you are, because

that is a part of the game.

270

:

You try to sell something and nobody

buys it or you sell something in

271

:

somebody who's unhappy with it.

272

:

Or a launch doesn't go as you

expected, or you start to feel like

273

:

an imposter or somebody says something

crappy about you on social media.

274

:

So many negative emotions that make you

a better person every time you feel them.

275

:

What about repairing a relationship?

276

:

Have you ever had a relationship

that was in disrepair and needed

277

:

some apologies and some hard work?

278

:

And you went to work on that.

279

:

Or just helping someone who is hard to

deal with that you don't really love.

280

:

That can be an amazing way to feel

negative emotion and to get stronger.

281

:

Now I'm not talking about

torturing ourselves.

282

:

You guys don't go out

and do anything harmful.

283

:

Don't put yourself in danger, but

allow yourself to feel bad sometimes.

284

:

We are so obsessed with feeling good.

285

:

We have created all the

substances in the world.

286

:

I mean, these food manufacturers are

in the lab trying to decide how much

287

:

of this one chemical to put in so that

we eat as much as humanly possible.

288

:

The chips are stacked against us.

289

:

It's so easy to embrace that

feeling good, but the negative

290

:

is part of the human experience.

291

:

You have to embrace him, stop trying to

run away and buffer from real life because

292

:

in the end it will come back to bite us.

293

:

So this week, I challenge you to

seek what your soul is seeking.

294

:

What does your soul need?

295

:

And if you can't hear it, Maybe it's

time to listen a little bit more.

296

:

And then use your body and your mind

297

:

to compliment your soul's

journey and help it get there.

298

:

I don't allow that body

and mind to take over.

299

:

They are incredible tools, but they are

not in charge of this life of yours.

300

:

You have a beautiful,

amazing life ahead of you.

301

:

I can't wait to see what you do with it.
