Hello and welcome once again to the Guy Who Knows A
2
:Guy podcast as we count down to the
first JV Connect in December:
3
:Of course, if you're listening to
this later, it's still relevant
4
:because there's another JV Connect
coming up every three months.
5
:JV Connect is not the kind of thing
you go to once a, ah, I've been there.
6
:It's kind of like saying, ah, I brushed my
teeth once, I don't have to do it again.
7
:You do it again and again,
because you always need to
8
:be meeting new, great people.
9
:And JVConnect is the place to do that.
10
:So, every week I'm sharing with
you some tips that you can use
11
:at this event and any event.
12
:But specifically, this event is optimized
to work with the way I teach networking.
13
:So if you really wanted to put
this to use, Go to jv connect.
14
:com.
15
:Be sure to register and join us and put
to work what I'm about to teach you.
16
:So what am I about to teach you?
17
:I asked around, so what
do you guys need to know?
18
:And one person asked, how do I keep track
of everything going on on a virtual event?
19
:There's so much going on.
20
:There's so many people, there's so much
talking, so much going on in the chat.
21
:How do I keep track of all of it?
22
:So I don't leave and say,
whew, that was overwhelming.
23
:And now what?
24
:So first.
25
:As always, begin with the end of mind.
26
:Why are you there?
27
:You're there because you
want to make connections.
28
:You're not attending just to have
fun, although it's gonna be fun.
29
:You're not attending just to meet people,
although you're gonna meet people.
30
:You're attending the payoff from this.
31
:The score, the KPI, Key
Performance Indicator, is booked
32
:appointments with great people.
33
:that you want to connect with.
34
:Now, this could be potential joint
venture partners, it could be prospects,
35
:but that's not really what you go
to a networking event looking for.
36
:It could be possible mentors, it could
be possible partners like collaboration
37
:partners, or even accountability partners.
38
:It could be someone, you know, you maybe
gotta coach each other, support each
39
:other, so you're doing something similar.
40
:Someone to share ideas with, create
a little mini two person mastermind.
41
:You know, know what you're trying to find.
42
:Imagine that there's a networking genie
there who will say, What is your wish?
43
:I will give you any introduction you want.
44
:And you can make an introduction, you can
make a wish, to the networking genie, and
45
:they will give you whatever you ask for.
46
:There's going to be
hundreds of people there.
47
:So you want to know what you want.
48
:Now, now you know what you want.
49
:So you're going to be going into
the rooms, looking for those people.
50
:And once you're in there, a lot of
things are going to be happening.
51
:A lot of people introduce
themselves, you're going to hear
52
:a lot of intros, you're going to
hear a lot of things going on.
53
:A lot of these rooms, there's
going to be some sort of
54
:activity or task or challenge.
55
:You're going to have to
see how people interact.
56
:It won't just be the,
you know, introduction.
57
:Yeah, you know how, what I do is, and I
do this, and here's what I'm looking for.
58
:Yeah, you'll have that, but you'll also
have a breakout, maybe we're building a
59
:giveaway, or a breakout where people are,
are, the task is to build collaborative
60
:programs, build programs together.
61
:And people say, well, I have
this asset and I have this
62
:giveaway and I can teach this.
63
:I could also teach this.
64
:I also have this that I could
add to someone else's program,
65
:but I don't market it primarily.
66
:So, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
67
:So it gives you the opportunity to
learn all kinds of things about them.
68
:And here's the thing.
69
:The first thing you want to be
doing is keep an eye on the chat.
70
:The chat is going to be kind
of the, the business end.
71
:So the conversation, the video,
the audio, that's the main channel,
72
:but the chat is the secondary
channel to put information in.
73
:So you want to be keeping an eye,
especially for private messages, because
74
:if you introduce yourself and you say
something compelling and interesting,
75
:and somebody wants to meet with you,
they're going to shoot their calendar
76
:link over in a private message.
77
:in the chat.
78
:So don't ignore that.
79
:I do also recommend people put their
LinkedIn in the chat, because if
80
:they can't find you in the chat,
if you missed their message, they
81
:may reach out to you on LinkedIn.
82
:It's easy, it's easier than email,
because you can just go on LinkedIn,
83
:hit a connection request, and in
that note say, hey, saw you at JV
84
:Connect, wanted to connect, here's
my calendar link, let's hook up.
85
:Easy peasy.
86
:One click as opposed to email you have
to go to their email and then oh look
87
:I have all these emails to read they
get distracted So I I do recommend
88
:that but pay attention to the chat
as well as you can And side note
89
:don't litter the chat don't increase
the noise What you drop in the chat
90
:should be very simple, very concise.
91
:Keep in mind, people are looking
at this chat while they're
92
:listening to people talk.
93
:And while they're trying to parse their
introductions and things like that.
94
:So if you have a page long introduction,
Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
95
:For 27 years, we have been in the
business of helping all these people.
96
:And here's a link, and here's
an event, and here's some
97
:other stuff, blah, blah, blah.
98
:Yeah, no one's reading that.
99
:Put a list.
100
:You know, one sentence, maybe two,
who you are, why you're interesting,
101
:LinkedIn, website, email address, phone
number, calendar link, why you should
102
:reach me, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom,
bullet points that people can consume
103
:while listening, and it really shouldn't
be more than 10, maybe 15 lines.
104
:If it's paragraphs, it's too long,
and it's cluttering the chat, and it's
105
:not useful, nobody's gonna read it.
106
:Probably, because nobody goes
back to the chat and reads it,
107
:which I'll get to in a second.
108
:But, do be paying attention,
look for those messages.
109
:If you're doing it right, people
are sending you messages to connect.
110
:That's how you win.
111
:And, send other people messages.
112
:You're going to send
them messages to engage.
113
:Now, I don't keep track, for the
most part, as I go, of what's going
114
:on when I go to an event like this.
115
:There's a fire hose, I put my
bucket up, I try to catch someone.
116
:I'm not trying to catch every single
person, because I'm not super organized.
117
:If you are super organized, Awesome.
118
:Fantastic.
119
:Have a notepad.
120
:Have a place to copy notes to.
121
:Have an open notepad file.
122
:You know, or a Google Sheet
or whatever it might be.
123
:But if you don't have
any of that, no problem.
124
:Just pay attention to the chat.
125
:Calendar link comes in.
126
:Hit the button to open that up.
127
:And so you're ready for it.
128
:And the way the event is set up...
129
:There's going to be breakout rooms,
where kind of the action happens.
130
:And then you come out, there's
a little bit of education.
131
:There might be a sponsor,
there might be a a break.
132
:Sometimes you do breaks.
133
:There might be, we're gonna
teach you something, or talk
134
:about something, or, or whatever.
135
:And, yes, I'd like you
to pay attention to that.
136
:That's good stuff to do.
137
:But that's also an okay time to go to
that calendar link that you just got.
138
:And book a time, right?
139
:That's an okay time to, to
clean up some of this stuff.
140
:It's an okay time to reach out
to some of these people that
141
:you have talked to in the chat.
142
:You don't have to keep
track of everything.
143
:Just get it done.
144
:Get it done right there.
145
:It's built for you to be able to do that.
146
:And that's one of the great things about
this not being an enrollment event.
147
:This is an enrollment event?
148
:I need to hold your attention on
me throughout the entire event.
149
:I don't want you going over, booking
appointments, doing all that stuff.
150
:No, I need your eyes on me.
151
:This is an enrollment event.
152
:I win if you win.
153
:I win because you book a bunch of calls,
because you connect with the right
154
:people, because you come out satisfied
saying this event has been awesome.
155
:I've got to buy another ticket right now.
156
:I've got to go to the next one.
157
:I've got to tell my friends.
158
:So, if that means you're not paying
attention to me while I'm sharing things
159
:in between breakouts, that's totally okay.
160
:If you don't have anything
to do, pay attention.
161
:I might have something useful.
162
:We've got some really
smart people sharing stuff.
163
:We just had The folks from InfiniteList,
they're a done for you giveaway program.
164
:So, you know, if you've heard about
giveaways as a list building tool,
165
:they do all the work for you, you
just have to send out a couple emails.
166
:It's really cool.
167
:They're going to be coming in talking
about giveaways, just sign them up,
168
:and some other things like that.
169
:But, what?
170
:Me get distracted?
171
:Who?
172
:Yes.
173
:Okay, so, as I said you are going to
want to have a place to copy notes to.
174
:Because sometimes it's not as simple as
a calendar link, sometimes you want to...
175
:Grab someone's info and copy it down.
176
:Sometimes they don't give you a calendar
link, maybe there's just an email
177
:address, or LinkedIn, or whatever.
178
:You're gonna get to it later.
179
:Copy those things over in real time.
180
:Do not assume You'll just save the chat.
181
:Now you can save the chat.
182
:That's totally cool.
183
:If you haven't done it already,
there is a setting in Zoom that
184
:lets you automatically save
every chat from every meeting.
185
:I recommend you set that to being on.
186
:They're not very big files and it avoids
that, Oh, I forgot to save the chat.
187
:So definitely do that.
188
:And for the love of God,
log in from a computer.
189
:Do not try to log in from a phone.
190
:You want to log in from a phone?
191
:Fine.
192
:Don't complain about not having the
chat, and don't ask people for the chat.
193
:If you're logging in from a
phone, you're sitting in the
194
:balcony and you're watching.
195
:Alright?
196
:You're not fully engaged in the event.
197
:It's fine, you gotta do what you gotta do.
198
:But I'd come with the right equipment.
199
:You know, you don't go to an event
without dressing up properly.
200
:Don't come to a virtual event without
being on the right Technology, right?
201
:That's just my, my little rant there.
202
:Again, I'm not gonna stop you.
203
:You wanna be on your phone?
204
:Be on your phone.
205
:I don't care.
206
:But it's gonna be much, much harder
to communicate with people if you
207
:are not on a laptop, desktop device.
208
:So, keep place ready to take notes.
209
:Copy those over, if you need to, you know,
cut and paste, do that kind of thing.
210
:What Kendra recommended, what she says
she does, is she has a Google Sheet ready.
211
:So, she has a, she already has
the header set up for what she's
212
:going to want to keep track of.
213
:And if she sees something interesting,
she puts that information right
214
:there in the Google Sheet.
215
:And then afterwards, she can
follow up by going down the sheet.
216
:She's my VA, she creates orders,
she's really good at that order thing.
217
:Me?
218
:Not so much.
219
:So, if you are one of those orderly
people, have a Google Sheet, or a
220
:notepad, or something ready to copy
content into, so you're ready to
221
:follow up when you have a moment.
222
:If you're like me, and you're like,
ah, I don't need more stuff to
223
:follow up with, that's too much work.
224
:No problem.
225
:Just do it right then and
there, calendar link, bam.
226
:See someone you want to meet?
227
:Shoot them your calendar link.
228
:BAM!
229
:Your calendar link should have questions.
230
:I believe I've talked about this in
a previous episode or somewhere else.
231
:I know I talk about this all the time.
232
:Your calendar link should have questions.
233
:Questions should include,
Where did we meet?
234
:Don't start your conversation that you
have in February because you met so many
235
:people saying, Where did we meet again?
236
:Waste of time.
237
:One question, where do we meet?
238
:Another one, who is
your ideal introduction?
239
:Who would you most
likely be introduced to?
240
:That's a great one.
241
:Something like, what are
you working on right now?
242
:Or what's your biggest
frustration in your business?
243
:Or anything in that space that
gives you that understanding.
244
:You know, questions like that.
245
:And you can also use this.
246
:I, on mine, have a question that says,
Can I add you to my email community?
247
:And most people will say yes.
248
:Now you're growing your list.
249
:They can always unsubscribe
if they want to.
250
:Now don't do this if your list is
one of those pitchy, spammy lists.
251
:You don't want your network
or partners on there.
252
:But if your list is high quality,
valuable content that people like
253
:getting, then yeah, ask questions.
254
:Can I add you to my community?
255
:A lot are going to say yes, they're going
to get it, they're going to love you.
256
:If you send emails like I do.
257
:So, that's, that's kind of
my tip, a couple tips for
258
:keeping track of everything.
259
:And the biggest thing, don't
worry, don't worry about it.
260
:You're not going to catch everything.
261
:You're not going to get every opportunity.
262
:This is an abundant space.
263
:You're going to be surrounded
by dozens or hundreds of people.
264
:There might be a hundred people who
would be good for you to meet with.
265
:Maybe you're going to
follow up with 20, of them.
266
:That's awesome.
267
:That's 40 follow ups.
268
:How great is that?
269
:Who cares about the 60 you didn't get?
270
:Think about the 40 you did get.
271
:And all the 60 you missed?
272
:Come back in March.
273
:Come back in June.
274
:Come back in September.
275
:You can meet them then.
276
:You only have so much time to follow up.
277
:So don't worry about,
Oh, I missed something.
278
:Oh, I missed a follow up.
279
:I missed a calendar.
280
:Don't worry about it.
281
:If it's meant to be, you'll see
them in another breakout room.
282
:Entrepreneur'd happened because I met
Laura Lake in a big breakout room and we
283
:sort of connected but didn't really gel.
284
:And then we made each other another
breakout room where she was there and Eli
285
:Delaney was there and a few other people
and we started talking about entrepreneur
286
:and we're like, Oh, this would be great.
287
:We should do this.
288
:And then, we did a one on one,
there's going to be a couple, we're
289
:going to do that, a couple speed,
speed networking one on ones.
290
:And there I was with Laura Lake, and
I was like, we got a new entrepreneur.
291
:We do, we got to do it.
292
:And it was a year later when the stars
aligned, and we were able to actually
293
:put that together, and yes, there will
be another entrepreneur next year.
294
:But, it was meant to be, so it happened.
295
:Plenty of people at the event I
didn't end up connecting with,
296
:wasn't meant to be, didn't happen.
297
:It is what it is.
298
:You know, so don't stress
out, don't freak out.
299
:If you come out with, 10
good, 5 good connections.
300
:If you spend 2 days and come up with
5 really good connections, that's
301
:a good investment of your time.
302
:10, that's a really good investment
of your time, for, for that much time.
303
:Think about any networking event
you've gone to, any hour or 90 minute
304
:networking event, how many really good
connections did you come out with?
305
:Usually it's 1, maybe
2, 3 if you're lucky.
306
:So if you go to a 14 hour event, and
you come out with 30 connections,
307
:That's over to an hour pretty solid
if you come out with 45 even better
308
:But pretty solid pretty solid
investment time plus you're gonna.
309
:You know learn some stuff You're gonna
get around some people you're gonna be
310
:seen by people you'll see and be seen
so a lot of good stuff happening There
311
:if you are not yet registered for JV
connect You should get on that because
312
:the rates gonna be going up somewhat soon.
313
:It's going up regularly It's a a
ramping rate, so it's not one of those
314
:like there's no early bird in regular.
315
:Nope 30, 50, 70, 90, 110, 130,
150, depending on when you get it.
316
:And I don't know when you're listening.
317
:So I mean, I can tell you the prices
now, but go to JV dash connect.
318
:com.
319
:When you go there, hit the
register button and that will give
320
:you the details on the pricing.
321
:So I look forward to seeing
you at the next JV connect.
322
:Whenever you're listening to this,
hopefully you've found this valuable.
323
:If you have maybe share it with
a friend, tell someone about it.
324
:And if you don't know, I do
a daily motivational podcast
325
:called morning motivation.
326
:So search wherever you listen
to podcasts for Morning
327
:Motivation by Michael Whitehouse.
328
:It's really gotten a lot of
traction, so check it out.
329
:You might like it.
330
:A lot of other people do.
331
:And be sure to check out our next
episode with another great interview.
332
:Do I know which one it is?
333
:No.
334
:But you probably do, because you've
got the podcast list in front of you.
335
:So, check that out.
336
:We've got some awesome
interviews this season, and, of
337
:course, awesome solo content.
338
:And do share it with your friends.
339
:This is Michael Whitehouse,
the guy who knows a guy.
340
:You are the listener, I am the podcaster,
and hopefully you learned something.
341
:See you in the next episode.
