Amy:

It is the second anniversary of The Love My Museum podcast,

2

:

and I'm so glad you're here.

3

:

Whether you've been listening

from the start or just found the

4

:

show, this episode is for you.

5

:

Let's get started.

6

:

Hello and welcome to the

Love My Museum podcast.

7

:

I'm your host, Amy Kehs

and I love museums.

8

:

I'm also a brand strategist and

communications expert for museums and

9

:

the creator of the Love My Museum Method,

and this is a really special episode.

10

:

This week marks two years the Love

My Museum podcast, and I honestly

11

:

can't believe that two years ago

I launched this podcast as a.

12

:

Love letter to museums and

the people who work in them.

13

:

I wanted to use it to share practical

and helpful tips and tools that would

14

:

help make your museum more lovable

for visitors and also a better

15

:

place to work for you and your team.

16

:

I've been working in museums

for over three decades now.

17

:

Yep, 33 years.

18

:

I started as a volunteer and then

an intern, and then an employee, and

19

:

then in 2000 I started my own business

Kehs communications, and I've been

20

:

a contractor slash consultant slash

strategic partner for museums ever since.

21

:

Over the years, I've seen how

intentional communication.

22

:

Clear messaging and a really thoughtful

visitor experience can transform how

23

:

museums connect with their communities.

24

:

Because I think every museum needs

to be a community museum, and this

25

:

podcast is one of the ways I get to

share those ideas with more people.

26

:

In today's episode, I'm going to reflect

a little bit on year two of the podcast,

27

:

share this year's top five episodes,

talk about a few of my favorite moments,

28

:

and then give you a bit of a sneak peek

at what's coming next for the podcast.

29

:

When I first started this podcast, I

wanted it to be a place where museum

30

:

professionals could get bite-size, doable

ideas that they could actually implement.

31

:

I wanted them to be able to listen during

their lunch break or on their commute.

32

:

I've never wanted it to be one

of those hour long podcasts, and

33

:

honestly, I'm very conscientious and

think through quite a bit about how

34

:

long an episode should be, and I have

some rules for myself about that.

35

:

You'll find that the guest episodes

tend to be a bit longer, but nothing

36

:

is ever longer than 30 minutes.

37

:

And based on analytics, it seems that

that sweet spot is the 15 to 18 minutes.

38

:

And so that's what I aim for and that.

39

:

Didn't really change in year two.

40

:

If anything, the analytics showed

me that that is what you need

41

:

and what you're looking for.

42

:

I also hope the podcast would help

you fall back in love with your work,

43

:

not just your organization's mission.

44

:

And I've heard from so many of you

that these episodes are a nice, gentle,

45

:

helpful nudge to get back to basics

and be more intentional about the

46

:

systems that you're putting into place

for that long-term sustainable growth.

47

:

I've also heard from smaller

museums that when you have a

48

:

small team, a lot of times you.

49

:

Wear multiple hats, and sometimes

those hats might not be your expertise.

50

:

So you may be a program manager

or in education, but you're

51

:

also wearing that marketing hat.

52

:

And so I've heard from a lot of listeners

that this podcast is also helping them.

53

:

Another great thing about analytics

is that I also know that the podcast

54

:

is listened to all over the world,

and I think that's so cool that a

55

:

podcast recorded here in Maryland

is being listened to in museums

56

:

across the United States, but also

in the United Kingdom, Australia,

57

:

Denmark, Germany, Spain, New Zealand.

58

:

Literally all over the world, and

that continues to be one of my

59

:

favorite parts of this whole project.

60

:

Okay, so let's talk about

this year's top five episodes.

61

:

These are the five episodes that really

rose to the top in terms of analytics

62

:

let's start from number five and

we'll work our way up to number one.

63

:

So in the number five

episode spot is episode 43.

64

:

This one was called From Idea to Impact.

65

:

It was an episode that I did

about my business anniversary.

66

:

I celebrated and Talked about

the 25th anniversary of my

67

:

Business Kehs communications.

68

:

In this episode, I talked about how

I saw the evolution of my business in

69

:

five stages, and I shared that story in

the episode, the stages of my business.

70

:

Were idea independence,

inspiration, investment, and impact.

71

:

And I talked about how each phase

paralleled shifts in museum communications

72

:

over the past quarter of a century.

73

:

In the spot at number four was episode 46.

74

:

Museums in the movies.

75

:

This one was so fun and honestly, I

got so much feedback from the episode.

76

:

I kind of thought it was going to

be a little farther up the list.

77

:

It was a special Halloween episode.

78

:

I did some fun music and I looked

at how Hollywood portrays museums

79

:

and movies, it was so fun and

definitely a bit of a detour from

80

:

the norm, but really a lot of fun.

81

:

In the number three spot was episode 47.

82

:

Your digital docent, Kathryn Jones.

83

:

This one was so great.

84

:

Kathryn Jones is also known as your

digital docent, and she is on a mission

85

:

to read every single label in every

Smithsonian museum in Washington dc.

86

:

A fun behind the scenes story about this.

87

:

So I saw Catherine's content

on social media and loved.

88

:

What she was doing and was so excited

that I sent her a message on Instagram,

89

:

told her who I was and what I did,

and asked if she wanted to meet.

90

:

And we had coffee in a museum

cafe over the summer and we became

91

:

fast friends and I knew I just

had to have her on the podcast.

92

:

it was a really fun episode and.

93

:

I can't wait to have Kathryn back on the

podcast soon in the number two spot I.

94

:

Was episode 44 growing up, a

museum kid featuring the Kehs kids.

95

:

This was my most requested episode to do.

96

:

I was joined by my kids, Zoe and

Nolan, to talk about what it was

97

:

like growing up as museum kids.

98

:

We talked about their favorite museums.

99

:

We talked about some behind the scenes

memories of coming to work with me.

100

:

And they also shared how those

experiences shaped their curiosity

101

:

about the world around them.

102

:

I loved doing this.

103

:

This is also one of the ones that

I received the most comments and

104

:

messages about in the number one spot.

105

:

Is episode 27.

106

:

It was called Love and Loyalty,

creating a Museum Visitor's Love.

107

:

This was one of the first episodes where

I talk about the Love My Museum Method.

108

:

And in this episode of the podcast,

I broke down this communication

109

:

strategy that builds museum

loyalty and attracts new audiences.

110

:

And I talked about those

three key elements.

111

:

Authentic brand messaging in exceptional

visitor experience and positive third

112

:

party endorsements in the form of

media relations and that all of these

113

:

things amplify your, your brand love.

114

:

I.

115

:

Talked a bit about why these three

elements work together so well.

116

:

I'm actually really surprised

and delighted that this episode

117

:

took the number one spot.

118

:

If you missed any of these, this might

be a great little playlist to queue

119

:

up for your next walk or your commute.

120

:

I will link all of them in the show notes.

121

:

So next, let's talk about my two

favorite podcast moments from year two.

122

:

Well, my most favorite

podcast moment was definitely.

123

:

Having my kids on the podcast, hearing

their perspectives, their memories of

124

:

growing up around museums and just having

their voices in your ears was really

125

:

special and a full circle moment for

me, not just as a museum professional,

126

:

but of course as a mom, may other.

127

:

Favorite podcast moment from year

two of the podcast was at the New

128

:

England Museum Association Conference

when a loyal listener came up.

129

:

And asked to take a selfie with me because

she had been listening to the podcast.

130

:

Shout out to Andrea in New Hampshire.

131

:

That was the best.

132

:

It totally made my day, made my week,

and was one of my favorite things of.

133

:

All of 2025.

134

:

So what's coming up next?

135

:

So looking ahead to year

three, I of course have lots of

136

:

ideas that I'm excited about.

137

:

I want to bring you more guest

interviews from museum professionals

138

:

who are doing creative.

139

:

Work people that you can learn

from, maybe even collaborate with.

140

:

And I'm also planning guest interviews

from experts who can share some

141

:

things about topics that we talk

about here and how you can implement

142

:

those into your work at your museum.

143

:

And as always, I want this podcast

to feel like a conversation.

144

:

I would love to know what you want more.

145

:

Of in the next year.

146

:

What questions do you have?

147

:

What challenges are you facing

in your museum right now?

148

:

What topics would you

like me to dive into?

149

:

I have a Google form linked in the show

notes, and I would love for you to fill it

150

:

out and tell me what you'd like to hear.

151

:

I wanna take a minute to thank

all of the guests that were on the

152

:

show in year two of the podcast.

153

:

My kids, Zoe and Nolan, Kathryn

Jones, your digital docent, Hannah

154

:

Gaston from the Small Museum

Association, Rebecca Schulman from

155

:

Museum Questions Consulting, Lindsay

Williams of Lindsay Williams Design.

156

:

I'll have all of their information

linked in the show notes as well.

157

:

thank you so much to my little team

and also my support system, Rachel,

158

:

Liz, everyone in my mastermind groups.

159

:

Thank you to my family and my

friends who have always been super

160

:

supportive and of course a huge.

161

Thank you to you.

162

:

Thank you so much for listening

to the Love My Museum podcast.

163

:

Whether this is your first episode or

you've listened to every single one, I'm

164

:

really am grateful that you are here.

165

:

If you've enjoyed the show, it would

mean so much if you could rate and review

166

:

the podcast that helps the podcast get

discovered by other museum professionals.

167

:

I'd also love it if you could share

the podcast with a museum colleague.

168

:

Don't forget to fill out the Google

169

:

like to hear on future episodes.

170

stuff in the show notes today,
