[00:06:27] Phil: Yeah. Was it? Prime maybe or [00:06:30] one of the streaming channels and it was really good and it got cancelled and I was Devastated because it was huh? I like him a lot. Oh, no, he was amazing in it It was great, but it didn't last I was disappointed about that. Yeah, definitely like that All right, anything else before we get into the money crates fans?

[00:06:47] James: said my piece on how I think this movie's

[:

[00:07:01] Phil: hot fuzz, tomato score, 91 percent critics, 89 percent audience favorability. I would have liked to have seen the audience a little higher. I think it probably is higher because of how good I think this movie is. So I think those are a little, I'd like to see those reversed almost. But high marks across the board.

[00:07:30] James: 8 million estimated.

[:

[00:07:35] James: would imagine if it's an 8 million with budgeting for advertisement and stuff, touring, that probably puts it up there at 16.

[:

[00:07:46] Phil: Either way. It absolutely made its money back domestic release 23 million international 56 million for a total worldwide of 80 million dollars this movie and I think that is probably pretty accurate [00:08:00] is longer than I would have anticipated. It seems longer than this, but they're calling it 2 hours in 1 minute.

[00:08:23] James: I rated this movie as a 10 on IMDb. It's one of the three movies

[00:08:29] Phil: Full 10. Yeah. [00:08:30] I never get tired of it. I mean, I'll watch it and I just, I'm in for the whole show, man. You know, it's, it's.

[00:08:41] Phil: And I, we'll get to it when we get to it, but I think it has one of the, yeah, I think it has one of the greatest shootouts in all of cinema.

[00:08:48] Sherry: and it, it, it's one of those movies, you know, like the burbs or something, it's comedy with horror mixed in and that's, I

[00:09:06] James: hero in his own regard.

[:

[00:09:11] Phil: do. It's fantastic. All right. All right. We'll get into this. I have, we have a lot of notes, theme state and all that. So let's get into the beats if there's nothing else. And we'll start breaking this down.

[00:09:48] Phil: That's his name. Yeah. Uh, angle, angle, angle, right. Yes. That's what I'm talking about. Yes, absolutely. No nonsense, walking fast with a [00:10:00] purpose. Laser like focus, perfectly attuned to his environment. Later it will be stated that it's only ever about the job. It's all he cares about. His ex girlfriend claims he is already married to the force.

[00:10:32] James: Yeah, it kind of shows you a metropolitan police and he kind of goes through all of his skills and

[00:10:43] Phil: Yeah. Yeah. And that look to the camera is always. And he plays it straight, like he, you can't make that a joke. He plays it straight and it's ten times funny. That's funny, you know. Yeah, I mean,

[00:10:58] Chris: He's also like, [00:11:00] good at it, right? Like, like the one note I wrote was super cop, you know? Yeah,

[00:11:10] Chris: Which I didn't catch that the first time I watched it, I don't know why. I even wrote the word super cop in my own notes and then fucking super cop movie shows up later.

[00:11:17] Phil: shit. Duh. Yeah. No, this, it, it, it parodies perfectly. The, uh, buddy action drama, right, trope, you know, and it doesn't go overboard. It is, it's, it's, it's [00:11:30] totally perfectly on tone to, to, to, to sort of send off these, these action comedies. So the setup I have is basically one minute. To three minutes, 19 seconds, as James was saying, he's basically the human terminator, highest arrest record, nine commendations in the last year.

[00:12:07] Phil: Any other thoughts on the setup? I think we're given a pretty good setup. I think the, just

[00:12:18] Phil: We're, we're given a very quick picture of who this guy is. Yeah.

[:

[00:12:25] Phil: The catalyst is being

[00:12:28] Phil: because he's overachieving.

[:

[00:12:45] Phil: It's Gloucestershire. Oh, now that's the proper Queen's English ugly Americans say Gloucestershire the country basically is what it is. Gotcha. Now there is more setup than just that because again, he goes talk to his girlfriend [00:13:00] and it's, it's the, it's the, the service now, not the four. So, so there is extensive setup as we get a glimpse of how serious.

[00:13:17] James: the other one was, no, of course I wouldn't be dating Bob. I'm dating the other guy. Hello there.

[00:13:26] Phil: He's just so impressive. Yeah. Hello there. Hello there. [00:13:30] But they're all dressed

[00:13:35] Phil: Uh, so that's essentially the setup to Catalyst. I think we all agree this is being made sergeant in the country. Now, there is a serious debate.

[00:14:01] Phil: I like

[:

[00:14:08] Phil: in the other room. Yeah. You want me to call the chief

[00:14:13] Chris: Yeah, this guy is Those three guys, Martin Freeman, Bill Nye, and I don't remember the other guy's name. Oh, Jesus. Hang on. And having those three. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You couldn't have got three

[00:14:29] Phil: The tall, the tall [00:14:30] one, right? Tall fella. Yeah, yeah. Mm hmm. No, that's Steven

Now the break into two, your transition from the first to the second act can be one second, or it can be a transition. And I think here it's, it's quite their transition. I have it from eight, 17. To 10, 30, 10 minutes, 30 seconds. Two taxis, several trains a bus to get 'em across the threshold and into the special world of Act two, which is Sanford Gloucestershire in the country.

[00:15:43] Phil: Yes, and I think, I think some of this is accelerated because of the amount of fun and games in this movie, which I have quite a lot. Yes. Yes. Any other thoughts? He's got his peace lily with him. Right. He's traveling. [00:16:00] Any other thoughts on that? I think it's, like I said, I think they get us there quickly.

[00:16:07] James: It does a lot of shots of his cell phone and the bars and his signal. Yes.

[00:16:13] James: have bars. No, I don't have bars now. I have like one or two bars. No, it's nothing like he's going out into the country. So

[00:16:28] Phil: So about eight hours and 22 [00:16:30] minutes. Total travel time to cross the threshold, which he completes by walking through the door of the Swan Hotel. So essentially that, that train ride, all those things took about eight hours to get from London to Gloucestershire. What was the second time? It goes from 1430 to 2052.

[00:17:08] Phil: Is that right? Six. Yeah. Anyway, long time. To get out to basically nowhere, he gets into the swan hotel. You

[00:17:30] Phil: Maybe that's an old title or. Yeah. Or do you mean like a mistake?

[00:17:36] Phil: best Western and the best Western made it. Part of their hotel chain, but kept the name or whatever. That's

[00:17:54] Sherry: It's Yeah, yeah.

[00:18:04] Chris: that is clearly downtown

[00:18:05] Phil: Yeah, right. Sure. He completes the crossing of the threshold by walking through the door of the Swan Hotel. All right. So he has crossed the threshold once he gets to the hotel. Now, I don't know what to make of this and maybe nothing. He gets to the hotel and the clerk Which I have her name down here somewhere.

[00:18:30] Phil: IMDB is driving me nuts. Yeah, yeah, hold on. Joyce Cooper? No? Joyce Cooper's husband? Who's the Cause I wrote down all the characters cause I wanted to keep them straight. Owner of the pub, husband of the pub, chief of police, private Joyce Cooper. Yes.

[00:18:47] James: Yeah, that's the owner of the

[00:19:06] Phil: Mm hmm. Is there any connections that we're making or just the creepiness? I think it's just the

[00:19:14] Phil: elements in this. Yes, but we're about to go down a rabbit hole of darkness later on. Yeah, so I'm sure there's an

[00:19:41] Phil: Now, the fun and games, I have a 1033 dash. Basically, essentially, the bulk of the movie. I have a lot of fun and games, I believe. Really? I think so. I

[00:19:58] Phil: Okay. Because I have a Yes, I [00:20:00] have a Fairly early when he gets off the final cab or whatever and enters the hotel, but that's it at like 10 minutes.

[00:20:09] James: it at when,

[:

[00:20:15] James: are murdered. Yes. When the first murders start to happen.

[:

[00:20:20] Chris: So you had, I thought initially that's what it was, but yeah, but his call or his catalyst right is, is getting promoted and sent out here in the, yeah, [00:20:30] it's definitely the fun and games is the super cop in this boring, seemingly boring town, right?

[00:20:52] Phil: the murders and stuff

[:

[00:20:53] James: But usually all the, all the characters are introduced in the first act. Yes. So you haven't met anybody [00:21:00] that's going to be in the movie yet. Right.

[:

[00:21:11] Chris: has to be, you don't always meet all the characters in the first act, right?

[:

[00:21:26] Phil: the upside down characters of the special world.

[:

[00:21:29] Chris: [00:21:30] doesn't meet Tin Man and Lion and

[:

[00:21:37] Chris: As far as that design goes, yeah. But other stuff, yeah, you can meet everybody.

[:

[00:21:45] Chris: probably meet everybody, you know?

[:

[00:21:48] Phil: sure, because this doesn't become an ensemble piece until he gets to the second act because he's a lone man, you know, he's right. And that's a good point. That's part of his problem. Good point. He can't [00:22:00] shut off. He's making. Yeah. He's unique. Anyway, fun and games starts. It arguably could be made James point because that's traditionally where it happens after the first murder in detective stories.

[00:22:31] Phil: That's where I have a start. And like I said, I think there's a lot. The theme stated, and again, this is always interesting to me, what did you all have as the theme stated? For the greater good. Okay. Mm hmm. Yeah. Okay. I have that as well. Here, I think we get the theme. Shut it. At least the argument of the film.

[00:23:08] Phil: Yeah. They pretty much said that. No,

[00:23:13] Phil: So I was confused. No, no, no. Right. Okay. He was making the other shoddy and lazy policing look bad. By contrast. We will find out later. That the greater good here is vigilantism, taking the law into one's own hands, either by profiting from underage drinking or by extreme [00:23:30] enforcement by civilians.

[00:23:51] Phil: That's what he calls the law. Procedural correctness in the execution of unquestionable moral authority. And that, and that, and it has to be [00:24:00] moral and it has to be authority, but it has to be totally moral versus this willy nilly vigilantism, which you can exercise for whatever purpose you.

[00:24:12] Phil: the greater good, as far as you see it, and that's what they will eventually say about greater good.

[:

[00:24:28] Sherry: hear the greater good [00:24:30] out in public, I go the greater

[:

[00:24:39] Phil: The greater good versus the laws of the law into the proper execution of the law. All right. Yeah.

[00:25:00] Phil: And then he asked, so you're 47 or whatever it is.

[00:25:29] Phil: Roper, I [00:25:30] think A. Roper, I don't have anything written down for him, so I think he was, was he the YARP guy? No. No, that was Michael. Michael, yeah, who's A. Roper? We don't ever learn his job, apparently, or else I didn't write it down. I'm looking, I'm looking. We'll figure it out. Jay Reaper, James Reaper, farmer, owns Brannigan Farm.

[00:26:15] Phil: steroids of the town because they want, they always want to be town of the year, village of the year or whatever. But I think, I think they are most of the city council and the vigilantes at, okay. Now at 11 minutes and six seconds, his future partner receives a pint.[00:26:30]

[00:26:52] Phil: I don't think I caught that first time, but you're looking at the paper and the headline is about this bypass.

[00:27:35] Phil: So on their website, they acknowledge the crown at Wells, but are very proud to point out that the interiors were shot in their pub, not the other. So if you're ever in. Beaconsfield, Bruckingshire, go to that pub and you will see the interiors. The Royal Stanford, the Royal Standard of England, [00:28:00] and there's the website, but anyway.

[00:28:06] James: No, he was down on those beers pretty quick, and Sgt. Angel's always can't turn it off, he's drinking cranberry

[00:28:48] James: I would not be surprised if they were on a full relationship after the movie ended. Yeah, they're like, yeah, they're just, this. The relationship that they gathered with each other was right. It's a [00:29:00] loving relationship.

[00:29:30] Phil: Essentially, yes. Most of those are the vigilantes and town council. Yeah, it was about 12 people or so.

Carter, the one who had glasses and yelped when Angel asked him his age. Simon Skinner introduces himself with Now, now, there's all this double entendre from Simon Skinner. Simon Skinner introduces himself with a menacing double entendre, talking about slashing prices, but his confession to being a criminal is not necessarily the joke it seems.

[00:31:13] Phil: So, uh, there is this fun double entendre about, about hiding in plain sight almost, as you learn about these people. Because he is a slasher. Frank Butterman is a bit of a Wild West nut. Does this, now this is just a rhetorical question, but does this feed into his affinity to [00:31:30] Wild West justice, a. k. a.

[00:31:47] James: just so far away that he was taking things into his own hands

[:

[00:31:54] Phil: Well, geogra and this is a typical angel answer. Geographical isolation shouldn't factor in the enforcement of the law. [00:32:00] It's the same law everywhere. Something happening here, and they're just yeah, right, you know denying it for obvious reasons that we'll learn later now That's the fun in games and I have a midpoint at one hour and two minutes of essentially the two hour movie Is there anything else?

Merchant was a client and good friend of so of the solicitor blower Who was having an affair with Eve Draper who worked on the city council in the Department of Planning and Development?

[00:56:14] Phil: Blower knows where the new pie pass was going because he was banging Eve Draper. Reporter Tim Messenger learns of this and informs Tiller that her land is very valuable. 10 times what merchant and blower offered her tiller then takes matters into her own [00:56:30] hands. And approaches the people that Blower, Merchant, and Draper have been talking to and sells it to them for her own negotiated price much higher.
