Hey, everybody.
2
:Welcome back to another edition
of the Daily Bible Podcast, and
3
:happy Monday to all of you Bible
people who observe Mondays.
4
:That's right.
5
:That's everybody.
6
:I think.
7
:Hey, did you know they're thinking
about changing the work week.
8
:I've heard that kicked
around for quite a while.
9
:Not a chance, man.
10
:It's been seven days from
the beginning of time.
11
:That's what happened.
12
:Oh, the work week?
13
:Yeah.
14
:Well, okay.
15
:No, I haven't heard that.
16
:Like they're, they've, a lot of people are
saying, let's go to a four day work week.
17
:Oh, four tens.
18
:Yeah.
19
:I've seen stuff like that before.
20
:Yeah.
21
:I don't know I'd before that.
22
:Would you?
23
:I would do it.
24
:I was trying to think if that
would even work as the church.
25
:Are you okay?
26
:There you are.
27
:Just, it's rearranging my seat here.
28
:You are doing something.
29
:It's hot in here.
30
:Are you still mad because we lost
our first episode yesterday hot.
31
:I wasn't mad about it.
32
:I was pretty much unfazed.
33
:Were you, I, yeah.
34
:I sensed that I didn't sense
that you were upset, but, well,
35
:you said I'm upset right now.
36
:I'm not frustrated.
37
:I feel fine.
38
:I'm just watching you
slam your chair around.
39
:I'm warm.
40
:That makes me upset.
41
:Getting hot and sweaty
does not make my day, dude.
42
:I'm not sweaty yet, but I'm
getting toasty around the corner.
43
:I don't have any heater
on or anything in here.
44
:It's just a lot of hot air in
this office is all, I didn't
45
:say who I'm saying normally the
temperature in the office is fine.
46
:Okay.
47
:But you know what, I'm glad that you're
in this one and I'm in the other one.
48
:'cause this one gets more afternoon sun.
49
:Which is hotter.
50
:Yeah.
51
:And they, in the morning.
52
:It's perfect.
53
:Do you do like it rather
frigid in the office?
54
:I like it.
55
:I like it cooler.
56
:It keeps my brain cool.
57
:Not relationally, just temporarily.
58
:Yeah.
59
:Tempera, temp, tempera early.
60
:Yeah.
61
:Yes.
62
:Climate lee, whatever.
63
:So are we doing the four tens here?
64
:Is that what the plan is?
65
:I don't think so.
66
:No.
67
:We're not gonna do that.
68
:No.
69
:It doesn't quite work for us.
70
:We'd have to do, I don't know
if a sector would work for I
71
:people, I've heard comment on it.
72
:Fire firefighters do things like that.
73
:That weird schedule.
74
:They do three, well, yeah,
three days on nurses.
75
:Yeah.
76
:Same thing there.
77
:But yeah.
78
:But like the production sector
and everything like that,
79
:truck drivers, it would.
80
:Throw a lot of things in for a
loop, you'd have to have widespread
81
:acceptance, and then everyone does.
82
:It's kind of like daylight
savings time, which nobody likes.
83
:No, but everyone does it so it works.
84
:Although we get to fall back soon, man.
85
:I don't remember when.
86
:I don't know.
87
:I'm still hoping that our governor
pushes through the legislation for
88
:us to just stick with one of 'em.
89
:I don't even care which one at this point.
90
:Just let me have one.
91
:Although there's one that would
put us three hours different
92
:from California, I don't care.
93
:California's dead to me.
94
:I'm just kidding, guys.
95
:I'm just kidding.
96
:I love you guys.
97
:I was gonna say, Bruno and
Nani are not gonna like that.
98
:Yeah.
99
:You're not gonna get peanut butter
balls from Cherie next time.
100
:Yeah.
101
:I don't wanna compromise that.
102
:Yeah.
103
:I do not wanna compromise that.
104
:No I would just like to
stay on the same time.
105
:Okay.
106
:That would be great.
107
:Alright.
108
:Fair enough.
109
:Alright hey, let's jump into our DBR.
110
:We are in John chapter two
through John chapter four.
111
:John two through four.
112
:So John, chapter two is, it
opens with a familiar story.
113
:Again the changing of water to wine.
114
:And there's a lot of questions here.
115
:Was he talking about replacing the
purification system because there the
116
:purification jars that were filled with
water and then he changed it to wine.
117
:Was he making a statement there?
118
:It maybe but Jesus is revealing
part of his identity here.
119
:So we need to set the stage.
120
:The reason this is a problem is this was a
massive point of indignation and shame for
121
:the family that was hosting the wedding.
122
:And Mary clearly loved this family.
123
:It evidenced by the fact
that she was invited.
124
:She had a, a.
125
:Pretty significant role in this,
that she would be able to go to
126
:Jesus and ask Jesus to intervene.
127
:And so Jesus is gonna do this
even though his first rebuff of
128
:Mary's request is, seems stark.
129
:Woman, what does this have to do with me?
130
:My hour has not yet come.
131
:First the word woman was
a term not of rebuke and.
132
:Pejorative nature like it is today.
133
:This was a common way to address someone.
134
:And so Jesus it may not have been the
common way to address your mother, but
135
:some have even said this may be Jesus
indicating that his identity is shifting.
136
:That his purpose in his main role is not
that of Mary's son anymore, but that of
137
:the son of God that he's shifting over to.
138
:Fulfill that rule still, he responds.
139
:When she responds, I think
faithfully and says to the
140
:servants, do whatever he tells you.
141
:He does this miracle.
142
:And I think it's less about
maybe there's layers there.
143
:John is known for multiple
layers of meaning.
144
:So it.
145
:Definitely could be that he's
pointing out the purification
146
:rights are gonna be replaced.
147
:That it's not about the law anymore.
148
:Jesus is here to do something new, the
wine, the celebration, the joy but Jesus
149
:is doing this and he does it, I think more
for his disciples and the servants that
150
:were part of this than for anyone else.
151
:Because the disciples see
this and he manifests.
152
:It says in the Bible, he manifests
his glory to them through this sign.
153
:So he's showing these freshly
called disciples that that
154
:following him is worth it.
155
:Because they're gonna see
some pretty amazing things.
156
:Not worth it from an entertainment
perspective, but worth it from the
157
:perspective of, man, his power is
on display in what he's doing here.
158
:Yeah.
159
:Baptists have only taken a
slight issue with this text
160
:and that it's mistranslated.
161
:Many Baptists understand that the way
it should be translated is that Jesus
162
:turned the water into grape juice.
163
:There it is.
164
:That's what happened.
165
:There it is.
166
:Besides that, it's a great text.
167
:Yeah.
168
:Yeah.
169
:Verse 11, it says, this is the first
of his signs that Jesus did at Cana
170
:in Galilee and manifested his glory.
171
:Now we just read about
another sign yesterday.
172
:We read about the man with the para
paralysis being lower, lowered down.
173
:We've read about him healing people
at Peter's mother-in-law's house.
174
:So it seems like maybe
chronologically this might be out
175
:of order a little bit here, but.
176
:Nonetheless, this is where we find
ourselves reading it, but I don't have
177
:a reason to doubt that this is true.
178
:What John says that this was
the first miracle that he did.
179
:'cause John was here.
180
:John was present with him, and so it seems
like this one probably pre preempted the
181
:other ones that we've read about so far.
182
:From here, the Passover of the Jews,
it says in verse 13 was at hand.
183
:And so that was one of the feasts that
required the presence of all Jewish males.
184
:And so Jesus, in perfect obedience to
the law, went up to Jerusalem there and
185
:he finds the temple had been overrun.
186
:At least the court of the Gentiles,
the outer courts where the Gentiles
187
:could go to worship had been overrun
by these money changers and by people
188
:looking to make a money, make a dollar,
make a dropout, whatever the money was.
189
:Off the people come to the temple to
worship God, and they were gouging
190
:prices for buying the sacrifices there.
191
:It's like trying to
get gas by the airport.
192
:You're gonna pay way above market
value for these sacrifices there.
193
:They're changing out money and
charging interest to, to say, okay,
194
:you can bring your foreign money here.
195
:We'll give you the temple money,
but we're also gonna charge a
196
:little bit off the top here.
197
:So Jesus isn't having it.
198
:And he forms a whip of cords and it
says he drove them out of the temple
199
:along with the animals and the.
200
:The beast.
201
:So Jesus is using a whip here.
202
:On people.
203
:Yep.
204
:To drive them out of the temple.
205
:That's what I would do.
206
:And he's overturning the
tables and all of this.
207
:And the reason being is because he
loves the holiness and the glory of God.
208
:And this was demeaning that,
and he was not standing for it.
209
:And so he's his passion.
210
:And that's what it says in the text.
211
:The disciples, remember this, the
deal for your house will consume me.
212
:His passion for his father is on
clear display in this encounter.
213
:Real quick, this is presented in the other
gospels at the end of Jesus' ministry.
214
:Is this at the beginning of Jesus'
ministry too or is John moving it forward?
215
:The, yeah, so that's the question.
216
:Are there two cleansings
or is there only one?
217
:I tend towards there being
two that bookend his ministry.
218
:And I think this is the first
one and there's another one
219
:that takes place later on.
220
:Right on.
221
:Yeah.
222
:After this, it says
that many followed him.
223
:You'll notice that towards
the end of chapter two.
224
:And yet Jesus was skeptical of them.
225
:The Greek plays off.
226
:He did not believe in their belief because
he knew it was in the heart of man.
227
:So Jesus is gonna have a lot of people
that initially flocked to him who.
228
:He knows whether or not
their faith is genuine.
229
:And that's a sobering reminder to us
to make sure that our faith is genuine,
230
:that we're not following Jesus for the
wrong reasons, but that we're following
231
:him, surrender to him as our Lord and
the Savior, and for the right reasons.
232
:Chapter three, familiar, probably the
most familiar chapter in the gospel
233
:of John, perhaps, and that is the
interaction when Nicodemus comes to
234
:him, it says by night there, and he
says, we know that you're from God.
235
:For no one can do the things that you're
doing unless he's been sent from God,
236
:and Jesus tells him Nicodemus I tell
you the truth, unless one is born again,
237
:he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
238
:And a common theme in John's gospel
that we'll see over and over again
239
:is that Jesus is gonna try to get to
the spiritual level, and his audience
240
:is gonna stay on the physical level.
241
:So Jesus is trying to convey that the
need for regeneration to be born again.
242
:To this man, Nicodemus and expecting
Nicodemus would understand this.
243
:And I think expecting that because of
passages like we read not too long ago
244
:in Ezekiel the new covenant language, the
new heart, the being given new life, the
245
:spirit being placed within the washing
and the water, all of these things.
246
:And Jesus is expecting
Nicodemus to be able to track
247
:with them and Nicodemus can't.
248
:And so Jesus then goes to press
even further and says if you can't
249
:understand, if I've told you earthly
things, verse 12, how are you gonna
250
:understand the heavenly things?
251
:No one has ascended into heaven except he
who descended from heaven, the son of man.
252
:And then he begins, I think from here
to explain how regeneration is possible.
253
:And that is the most famous passages in
John as Moses lifted up the surface in
254
:the serpent, in the wilderness, so much
the son of man be lifted up, that whoever
255
:believes in him may have eternal life.
256
:3 16, 4.
257
:Gods love the world that
he gave his only son.
258
:Whoever believes in him should
not perish, but have eternal life.
259
:I think Nicodemus is being.
260
:Todd, this is how
regeneration is possible.
261
:Nicodemus, you asked how can a
man enter into his mother's womb?
262
:It's not physical rebirth.
263
:Jesus has said earlier, it's spiritual
rebirth, and that comes this way.
264
:It comes through the son of
man being lifted up so that
265
:you might have eternal life.
266
:Okay, two follow-up questions.
267
:Number one, what does it
mean to be born again?
268
:And clearly Jesus is saying here,
it's essential to be a Christian.
269
:So how does someone know if
they've been born again and
270
:what does that mean practically?
271
:Yeah.
272
:Paul's gonna pick up on this concept
of being a new creation in Christ.
273
:And even Romans chapter six is gonna
talk about the fact that we have
274
:been buried with him by baptism
into his death in order that we
275
:might walk in newness of life.
276
:So there's a freshness.
277
:I was talking with somebody recently
to just say, who we were prior to
278
:Christ when we're at the bema seat.
279
:That's not brought up.
280
:That's not there because that's
part of the old that's gone, that's
281
:been taken outta the equation.
282
:It's who we are as we have been made new,
we've been given new life, regenerated.
283
:The spirit has given us new life
in Christ and we are now able
284
:to walk in obedience to him.
285
:And that's what we're dealing with
there at the assessment of the beam.
286
:A seat of Christ is how we walk
as Christians, as believers.
287
:So how do I know if I've been born again?
288
:Have you believed in Christ John three 16?
289
:Have you trusted in him for eternal life?
290
:Have you repented from your
sins and put your faith there?
291
:And then, much like John the Baptist,
confronted the religious leaders,
292
:we're gonna bear fruit in keeping
with that faith and keeping that with
293
:repentance, with that repentance.
294
:And so, second Peter, chapter
one we talked about this at
295
:least in community groups.
296
:I can't remember if I hid it in the sermon
or not, but verses five, I think I did
297
:verses five through 11 when Peter says,
supplement your faith with these things.
298
:And confirm you're calling an
election by practicing these things.
299
:So I think one of the evidences
of our new birth is we see that
300
:transformation in our life.
301
:So is there an experiential
subjective sense in which you
302
:people talk about all the time?
303
:Oh, I, when I was saved things,
suddenly things were so different.
304
:There was the changes all over.
305
:I suddenly grew in love for the scripture.
306
:I wanted to be at the church
I all these different.
307
:Experiential and subjective
things happen to them.
308
:Is that consistent?
309
:Is that what John is getting at when
he talks about going from darkness
310
:to light and from being dead in
your sins, that, that's Pauline
311
:language, but being born again, is
that something that every Christian
312
:should expect and to what degree?
313
:Yes, our affections are gonna change.
314
:Yes.
315
:Our desires are gonna change.
316
:But it's hard to blanket statement
that, because everybody's
317
:got a different testimony.
318
:And so for the person that's been strung
out on drugs their whole life, that
319
:then gets saved the contrast is gonna
be so stark and so evident in their
320
:life that you're gonna be able to look
at them and say, wow, that's amazing.
321
:The kid that's been brought up in
the church their whole life and
322
:their main sin is self-righteousness.
323
:Which is just as deadly as being
strung out on drugs your whole life.
324
:The change, the contrast may be
less noticeable for that one.
325
:And so that's why I think it's, we
can't, as a church prescribe this
326
:is what the change has to look like.
327
:Should there be a change?
328
:Yes.
329
:Should your affections change
and your desires change?
330
:Yes.
331
:To what degree is going
to change based on, on.
332
:Who you are and how God's
working in your life.
333
:Yeah.
334
:This is a unilateral event being born
again, the regeneration is the technical
335
:term for this process or this experience.
336
:This is something God does.
337
:This is something you can't force.
338
:When, I guess here's another question.
339
:This is related to the second question,
but it's still part of the first.
340
:When does being born again happen in
relation to the rest of your salvation?
341
:It's.
342
:Imperceptible from a
human, from the human eye.
343
:But regeneration does proceed.
344
:Faith.
345
:We have to be born again in order
to put our faith in Christ for
346
:the forgiveness of our sins.
347
:A dead body can't do anything right.
348
:A spiritually dead
person can't do anything.
349
:So the spirit in part's life
causes us to be born again.
350
:And part of that then is the ability
to put our faith and trust in
351
:Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
352
:That's all part of the
package of conversion.
353
:It's, that's why I say it's
imperceptible from the human eye.
354
:You can't look and say, okay, this person
got born again, and then a week later
355
:they, they put their trust in Jesus.
356
:This is all happening
instantaneously from our perspective.
357
:Yeah.
358
:But it's God's work
that precedes our work.
359
:So someone shouldn't freak
out then if they're not Sure.
360
:Am I born again?
361
:I'm not born again.
362
:This really isn't a
question for you, your job.
363
:From God's perspectives, repent.
364
:Put your trust in Jesus.
365
:Believe in him.
366
:It's not for you to say, I
Lord, I wanna be born again.
367
:Help me be born again.
368
:Your job is to put your trust in Jesus.
369
:Not to say, I need to be born again.
370
:That's not your job.
371
:You can't make yourself be born
again any more than you can make
372
:yourself be born in the first place.
373
:Yeah, you're just the passive
recipient of this process, and
374
:this is God's work on your behalf.
375
:Okay, second question
was Nicodemus born again?
376
:Was he a Christian?
377
:I believe by the end of John's
gospel, we see evidence that he
378
:was, he's there at the cross.
379
:He's helping with the body
being taken down from the cross.
380
:I think Nicodemus does get saved.
381
:Yes.
382
:Yeah, that sounds pretty cool.
383
:Yeah.
384
:And he'd be one of the few people
who's a Pharisee, who seems to
385
:have a legitimate faith in Christ,
which is kind of a warning.
386
:Yep.
387
:Yep.
388
:The rest of John chapter three, you have
a conflict arise between the disciples
389
:of John and and the disciples of Jesus.
390
:Although more the disciples of John
they're jealous for John's sake.
391
:They love their teacher.
392
:They love the one that
they've been supporting.
393
:And they say, Hey, Jesus
is baptizing more people.
394
:And John says, great, that's awesome.
395
:That's why I came out.
396
:He must increase and I must decrease.
397
:So John clearly understood his
message, but what's fascinating
398
:is God uses this because.
399
:Jesus is gonna catch wind of
this, and this is gonna preempt
400
:him to move and he's gonna move.
401
:And from here in John four, it's gonna
say that he has to pass through Samaria.
402
:Now that's, he has to, because this
is part of God's will, God's plan,
403
:the Jews would often actually cross
over the Jordan River and pass and
404
:circumvent Samaria because they
didn't want to risk defilement.
405
:In going through the land of
the Samaritans, Jesus instead
406
:goes straight through Samaria,
stops at a well there in Ssar.
407
:He sits down and he encounters this woman.
408
:And I've said earlier, I think in
yesterday's episode, this is the
409
:first person that he's going to
reveal his messianic identity to.
410
:He's going to encounter this
woman and pursue her first.
411
:He does so with this idea of,
Hey, you need to ask me for water.
412
:'cause he had asked her,
Hey, can I get a drink?
413
:And he's gonna tell her, you should be
asking me for water and I'll give you
414
:water that you'll never thirst again.
415
:And again, she stays
on the physical level.
416
:She says, sir, where's this water?
417
:I want this water.
418
:So then he goes further after her heart.
419
:He says, why don't you call your husband?
420
:And she says, well, I
don't have a husband.
421
:He says, yeah, you're right.
422
:You've had five and the guy that you're
with right now, not your husband.
423
:And she then.
424
:Tries to shift the subject because
she's uncomfortable in our sin and
425
:says, okay what about places of worship
you, Jews, worship over in Jerusalem?
426
:We Samaritan's worship here.
427
:What's right?
428
:And Jesus goes with her there
and says, you know what?
429
:It's not about that.
430
:It's not about which mountain, but
it's about the worshiping the father
431
:in the right way, God, a spirit and
desires those to worship him and
432
:worship him in spirit and truth.
433
:So that's what you needed.
434
:Do and then she, the light bulb goes off
for, she goes I know when the Messiah
435
:comes, he's gonna reveal all this.
436
:And Jesus says, I who speak to you am He.
437
:The rest of the chapter is
all about her testimony.
438
:Going back, telling the other people
in Samaria all about this encounter.
439
:They come back, they spend
time around Jesus and they end
440
:up believing in him as well.
441
:So it's an unlikely first.
442
:Person for him to reveal his identity
to and one of the most effective first
443
:evangelists and ambassadors for Christ.
444
:It's an unlikely person that
we find here in John four.
445
:Yeah.
446
:This is such a cool narrative.
447
:I love what Jesus says in verse 34.
448
:He says, my food is to do the will of
him who sent me to accomplish his work.
449
:And this is when Jesus is
saying, look, his disciples like.
450
:Aren't you hungry?
451
:You haven't eaten yet, and Jesus is saying
There's something better than food that
452
:I've got, and given how hyper palatable
our food is today, I just think it's
453
:really cool that Jesus is saying there's
something better than even the most
454
:tasty sandwich that you can have, or the
best brisket that you can enjoy doing.
455
:God's will is more flavorful and
more desirable, and more enjoyable,
456
:and even more sustaining than
the best meal that you can enjoy.
457
:Yeah.
458
:Let's pray in that we're
done with this episode.
459
:God, we thank you for this example and
just a reminder that all of us were
460
:unlikely converts at some point in time.
461
:None of us deserved it.
462
:None of us have merited it.
463
:And yet, like you came after
Nicodemus, like you came after the
464
:woman at the, well, Lord, you came
after us with the saving grace.
465
:Of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
466
:And so we're so thankful for that.
467
:May we be like this woman at the
well and go and tell as many people
468
:as we can that we found the Messiah
and that they can find him to, and we
469
:pray that you'd save others through
those endeavors in those efforts.
470
:In Jesus' name, amen.
471
:Amen.
