A Business Friendship – Daily Wisdom

Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps. Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. We are on a daily trek to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps. Thanks for coming along on today’s trek as we increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. Proverbs 16:16 How much better to get wisdom than gold, and sound judgment than silver!  We are on Day 1691 of our Trek, and it’s time to explore another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today’s trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let’s jump right in with today’s nugget:

Today’s quote is from John D. Rockefeller, and it is: A friendship founded on business is better than a business founded on friendship.

A Business Friendship

Based on his success in business, I would say that John D Rockefeller knew a thing or two about business and friendships. It may be that he learned this lesson through a challenging experience of his own. However, from my own experience and observing several others businesses, I know that this quote contains good advice and wisdom. Indeed, one of the quickest ways to harm a friendship is to be a business partner.  It can work, but grave errors are often made, and misconceptions flourish when business plans are not thought through before starting. The company must be structured with clearly defined roles and responsibilities for each partner. You should never start a business with 50/50 ownership. Someone has to be the overriding decision-maker. You need to have buy/sell agreements in place if one person wants out or can no longer participate in the business. You may not desire a spouse assuming control in the absence of your partner. Finally, there needs to be strong financial controls to ensure success and determine how any funds are distributed.  These principles also apply if your friend and partner is also your spouse. Although working together and owning businesses has worked great for Paula and me, this is not always the case for married couples.  It does work well if you are also able to establish trusted partners and friends through your business.  That is because all the structure as mentioned above is set up before friendship.  Keep in mind that a strong friendship may not result in a good business partnership.  These principles assume that if you choose to establish a business partnership with another person or friend, both of you are committed Christ-followers. Otherwise, your business view and worldview may not align effectively. It would be challenging to be successful in business in these conditions.

2 Corinthians 6:14-15

Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness? What harmony can there be between Christ and the devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever?
