Unlocking the Covenant:

God's Promise to Abraham

This episode looks at Genesis chapter 15, focusing on God's covenant with Abram and the significance of the sacrificial offerings he made.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau emphasizes the importance of spiritual vigilance, equating the birds that threaten Abram's offerings to demonic forces that seek to undermine one's faith and success.

He explains how Abram's actions in driving away these birds symbolize the need for believers to protect their spiritual offerings through the authority of Jesus.

The episode further explores the prophetic message God delivered to Abram about his descendants' future, including their enslavement in Egypt and eventual deliverance.

By the end of the discussion, listeners are encouraged to reflect on the depth of God's promises and the faith required to embrace them fully.

Takeaways:

  • Pastor Bob emphasizes the importance of driving away negative influences, likening them to birds that seek to consume one's offerings.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

Hello everyone, everywhere.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

Pastor Bob Thibodeau here.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

Welcome to your 15 minute Bible walk broadcast for today.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

We're so blessed you're joining us.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

We left off last time in chap.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

Genesis chapter 15.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

And we finished with verse number 10, I believe it was.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

And we're going to start now in verse number 11.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

This is a story about Abraham offering the.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

The offering to the Lord that the Lord asked him to set up.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

Just review that real quick.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

How he had divide the animals we talked about it was split down the spine.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

Basically, they'd fall apart and he had to keep the birds away.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

And that's where we're going to start out right now.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

Verse 10.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

Said he took him unto these, divided them in the midst, laid each piece one against the other, but the birds he did not divide.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

, Genesis:

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

And when the fowls came down upon the carcasses, Abram drove them away.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

Now the here Jesus even made a reference about the birds come to eat the seed.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

You know, what falls on the wayside.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

So here we see the fowls represent Satan, demons, evil, possessed people, folks that, that just don't want you to succeed, all right?

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

And he says, when the.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

When Satan came.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

That's why I'm just transliterating that.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

When Satan came down upon the carcasses, Abram drove them away.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

So it's up to you to keep the birds off your seed, all right?

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

It's up to you to keep the demons away from your offerings.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

It's up to you to just drive these demonic forces away.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

Now we do that through the power and the authority of the name of Jesus.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

That's the bottom line here.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

But back into the verses.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

Now, verse 12.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

When the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

And lo, a horror of great darkness fell upon him.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

And he said to Abram, God said to Abram, know of a surety that your seed, your descendants, shall be a stranger in a land that's not theirs.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

And shall and shall serve them, the people who own the land.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

And they shall afflict them for 400 years.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

Now this is talking about Egypt, okay?

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

And verse 14, also that nation, Egypt, whom they shall serve, I will judge.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

And afterward they shall come out with great substance.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

And we know that's what happened during the Exodus, right?

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

They spoiled the Egyptians.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

Verse 15.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

And you shall go to your fathers in peace.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

You shall be buried in a good old age.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

Verse 16.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

But in the fourth generation, now, a generation is about 100 years.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

So he's saying 400 plus years from now they shall come here again.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

It was 430 years that they were in Egypt.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

They, your descendants that are going to be in this foreign land and afflicted.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

I'm going to bring them back here again.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

For the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

Verse 17.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

And it came to pass that when the sun went down and was dark, behold a smoking furnace and a burning lamp, a lamp that appeared like a lamp that was on fire, passed between those pieces.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

Now, you know, in Moses days, you know, we had the.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

The.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

The pillar of fire by night and the pillar of the big cloud by day, right?

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

Well, here we see the same thing in a miniaturized version for Abram.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

So in other words, this is God himself.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

This is.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

Is probably an incarnate Jesus.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

Either way, it doesn't matter.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

God showed up at Abram's sacrifice.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

And I want you to see something.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

A burning lamp passed between those pieces.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

I believe you'll remember he had to split those sacrifices down the middle, where it says that laid HP in verse 10.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

Laid each piece one against the other.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

They just kind of fell apart.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

And.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

And the ancient tradition of doing a covenant sacrifice between, let's say, two parties, two chieftains, where their families would come together and become one and supporting one another.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

Let's say you had a herder, rancher, we'll call him a rancher, but, you know, took care of the flocks and the other guy took care of the grain and the field and the wheat and all that.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

Well, if marauding troops came in and spoiled the guy's farm, he didn't have soldiers to protect him.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

The guy over here that had the ranchers of people came in, start stealing.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

Marauders came in and started stealing their.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

She didn't have people.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

But together they could protect each other, okay?

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

And they would enter into a covenant, and they would become basically one family, one group of people.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

They had those that provided the bread and the grain and all that stuff, and you had those that provided the meat and the resources.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

And they would mutually help each other.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

And they would enter into the covenant with each other.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

That was the covenant ceremony where they take these offerings and split them in the middle.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

The blood would be all over the ground.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

And the two chieftains, the two leaders of these parties, would walk back and forth, basically making a figure eight within the blood itself.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

That figure eight, if you turn it sideways, it's a sign of infinity.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

In other words, this covenant is going to last forever.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

All right, now here we see I.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

I firmly believe, and a lot of scholars have looked at this and said the same thing.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

That Abram seen God's footsteps in the blood.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

He's seen the footsteps probably of Jesus in the blood.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

And that changed his life forever.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

Think about it.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

He never went back.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

He was totally 100 in on this point.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

But here we see God walking in the midst of this, making this covenant with Abram.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

Verse 18.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

In the same day the Lord.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

That's all caps they saying Elohim.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

In the same day, Elohim made a covenant with Abram, saying unto your descendants, unto your seed, unto your descendants, I have given this land from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates, the Canaanites, the Kenzanites, the Ketamites, the Headites, the Perizzites, the Raphael and the Amorites, the Canaanites, the.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

And the Jebusites.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

All of them, all their land now belongs to you, Abram.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

Amen.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

Praise God.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

That's a powerful, powerful covenant.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

And this Abram, he just believed.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

That's why we see later is counted to him by faith to believe for this.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

Amen.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

Praise God.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

That concludes chapter 15.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

Tell you what, just to keep it simple, that's where we're going to stop today.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

Amen.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

And.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

And we'll break it up in chapter 16 beginning in the very next episode.

Pastor Bob Thibodeau:

So until then, this passed the bob reminding you to be blessed in all that you do.
