Shownotes

In this episode of the No Grey Areas podcast, host Pat McCalla welcomes back former Navy SEAL, speaker, and author Jason Redman. Jason opens up about his personal struggles after his military career ended, from dealing with trauma and anger to how it nearly tore apart his marriage. He recounts the life-altering injury he sustained during a mission in 2007, his battles with PTSD, and the importance of seeking help instead of facing life's challenges alone. Jason also touches on some stories, perspectives, and conspiracies encircling the 23rd anniversary of 9/11. September 11th was an unforgettable time in history, and Jason opens up on the true sacrifice his friend portrayed after surviving the fall of the twin towers. He shares insights from his new book, emphasizing the ongoing “training” needed in relationships, much like in the military, and the critical role of having a shared mission.

Jason also highlights the value of accountability, personal growth, and adapting when life doesn’t go as planned. He challenges listeners to be honest about their flaws, make multiple plans, and embrace accountability as the foundation for overcoming adversity. Host

In this episode of the No Gray Areas podcast, I sit down with one of our returning guests, former Navy Seal speaker and author Jason Redman. Jason shares the personal battles he faced after his military career ended. The toll it took on his relationships, and the lessons he's learned about ongoing training in both life and love. Let's get started.

00;00;27;19 - 00;00;35;12

Jason Redman

00;00;38;21 - 00;00;41;05

Jason Redman

Pat thanks, man. Thanks for having me back Yeah. Well and big shout out to your team who helps coordinate everything

00;00;46;06 - 00;00;48;29

Jason Redman

They're amazing. So they make us look good.

00;00;49;02 - 00;00;51;01

Jason Redman

That which which is a lot

00;00;51;03 - 00;00;58;17

Jason Redman

Yeah Yeah. Well, you're actually in town I am, we're in Phoenix here. And you were in town. You were speaking at,

00;00;58;19 - 00;01;06;12

Jason Redman

The Arizona Gang Investigator Association conference. So, big shout out to all our law enforcement out there. You guys know I love you.

00;01;06;14 - 00;01;09;24

Jason Redman

you know, I, Yeah, I have a very.

00;01;09;24 - 00;01;21;23

Jason Redman

High speaking rate that I don't charge. Military, law enforcement and fire. Of course, because I want to give back. And what I speak about is not only leadership, self leadership being the most critical. I also talk about,

00;01;21;23 - 00;01;22;13

Jason Redman

How we.

00;01;22;13 - 00;01;25;09

Jason Redman

Deal with trauma, which law enforcement.

00;01;25;09 - 00;01;28;16

Jason Redman

Fire. I call us to protect our community. We encounter a lot of that.

00;01;29;20 - 00;01;30;08

Jason Redman

Yeah.

00;01;30;10 - 00;01;31;06

Jason Redman

We're protectors.

00;01;31;06 - 00;01;32;19

Jason Redman

Men, responders.

00;01;32;19 - 00;01;35;08

Pat McCalla

But I like protective protect our community.

00;01;35;14 - 00;01;38;14

Jason Redman

Yeah, we're protectors, man. Law enforcement, fire.

00;01;38;19 - 00;01;40;05

Jason Redman

And,

00;01;40;05 - 00;01;40;29

Jason Redman

The military.

00;01;41;01 - 00;01;43;19

Jason Redman

You know, you have this calling, you're a protector.

00;01;43;19 - 00;01;45;06

Jason Redman

And,

00;01;45;08 - 00;01;48;06

Jason Redman

And that's a hard job. It's a hard job. It's hard on families.

00;01;48;06 - 00;01;51;07

Jason Redman

It's hard on individuals. You see a lot of trauma.

00;01;51;10 - 00;01;51;21

Jason Redman

and.

00;01;51;21 - 00;01;55;12

Jason Redman

And processing that trauma. And we haven't always done it. Well, we've.

00;01;55;12 - 00;01;58;12

Jason Redman

We've told guys, hey, suck it up. You know, just suck it up.

00;01;58;12 - 00;01;59;18

Jason Redman

And,

00;01;59;20 - 00;02;01;23

Jason Redman

Sometimes that's not good. It's never.

00;02;02;17 - 00;02;04;10

Jason Redman

No matter how many times. You see, it's.

00;02;04;10 - 00;02;08;19

Jason Redman

Never normal to see people's insides on their outside. I don't care how often you see it.

00;02;08;19 - 00;02;11;29

Jason Redman

It's just. And it weighs on you. Especially when it's.

00;02;12;28 - 00;02;14;28

Jason Redman

A child. Those are the hardest.

00;02;15;04 - 00;02;15;28

Jason Redman

And,

00;02;16;00 - 00;02;19;17

Jason Redman

So I talk about that. I talk about trauma and how we deal with trauma and how I had to deal.

00;02;19;17 - 00;02;20;00

Jason Redman

With trauma.

00;02;20;00 - 00;02;21;12

Jason Redman

How I hit, low.

00;02;21;12 - 00;02;24;22

Jason Redman

Point where it was my wife who really I was on a.

00;02;24;24 - 00;02;25;10

Jason Redman

20.

00;02;25;10 - 00;02;27;00

Jason Redman

Ten after my injuries, I heard the.

00;02;27;00 - 00;02;28;06

Jason Redman

World was great.

00;02;28;09 - 00;02;31;13

Jason Redman

But I was imploding inside and started pushing.

00;02;31;13 - 00;02;35;13

Jason Redman

Everybody away and doing everything that we know not to do. But we all do, you know.

00;02;35;13 - 00;02;47;09

Jason Redman

Because as protectors, we want to protect everybody else. And then when we have a problem, we have a tendency to say, well, I have to fix this on my own. I don't want to let anybody know I'm having issues. And I did the same thing, man.

00;02;47;11 - 00;02;49;20

Jason Redman

So anyways, I talked about all those things.

00;02;49;25 - 00;02;50;03

Jason Redman

Just

00;02;50;03 - 00;02;52;20

Pat McCalla

curious. Jason, let's just jump in there really quick.

00;02;52;20 - 00;02;58;20

Pat McCalla

u know what you were doing in:

00;02;58;24 - 00;03;00;25

Jason Redman

No, my what, my what? My wife.

00;03;00;26 - 00;03;02;29

Jason Redman

Was the one who really,

00;03;02;29 - 00;03;05;17

Jason Redman

and it's funny, we we I'm letting.

00;03;05;17 - 00;03;09;08

Jason Redman

The cat out of the bag. We got to open the relationship book with this, but,

00;03;09;11 - 00;03;12;17

Jason Redman

Because this takes time. You know, we we had been married almost.

00;03;12;17 - 00;03;13;11

Jason Redman

Ten years at that.

00;03;13;11 - 00;03;15;11

Jason Redman

Point, and, and.

00;03;15;13 - 00;03;18;12

Jason Redman

Trust and communication and knowing your spouse, all those.

00;03;18;12 - 00;03;33;21

Jason Redman

Things have to come into play. And I tell you what I mean. Our, our relation went from, you know, level 1.0 through my injuries over those next three years where she was my greatest caretaker. I mean, literally taking care of, four kids, one giant shot up, man child.

00;03;33;21 - 00;03;36;02

Jason Redman

and, we learned a lot.

00;03;36;05 - 00;03;36;27

Jason Redman

Behavior, right?

00;03;37;03 - 00;03;38;08

Jason Redman

I mean, yeah.

00;03;38;10 - 00;03;40;04

Jason Redman

Yeah, yeah.

00;03;40;05 - 00;03;42;20

Jason Redman

You know, toddler tantrums.

00;03;42;20 - 00;03;45;10

Jason Redman

so, yeah, that made us stronger.

00;03;45;13 - 00;03;47;01

Jason Redman

and really.

00;03;47;03 - 00;03;50;00

Jason Redman

because, man, that's a lot of doubt.

00;03;50;00 - 00;03;51;20

Jason Redman

And and and.

00;03;51;22 - 00;04;02;19

Jason Redman

Unknowns and insecurities going through these injuries where we didn't know what the outcome was going to be. I mean, for her man, 40 surgeries that she sat there and, waiting for me, it was easy.

00;04;02;19 - 00;04;12;18

Jason Redman

e done. And often many of the:

00;04;12;25 - 00;04;13;14

Jason Redman

Four zero.

00;04;13;14 - 00;04;16;20

Jason Redman

Four zero. Yeah. So my wife.

00;04;16;22 - 00;04;17;17

Jason Redman

endured all of.

00;04;17;17 - 00;04;17;24

Jason Redman

Those.

00;04;17;24 - 00;04;20;11

Jason Redman

So, you know, and, and.

00;04;20;16 - 00;04;26;17

Jason Redman

The average surgery, I would say was probably eight hours, some shorter towards the end. But, I mean, that's a long time.

00;04;26;17 - 00;04;35;14

Jason Redman

To sit there and wonder about, you know, how is my spouse doing, as they're doing complicated surgeries.

00;04;35;16 - 00;04;39;20

Jason Redman

So, so, yeah, fast forward to:

00;04;39;20 - 00;04;42;20

Jason Redman

Some surgeries, but everything, for the most part was good. I was starting.

00;04;42;20 - 00;04;44;01

Jason Redman

To face the fact that my.

00;04;44;01 - 00;04;45;23

Jason Redman

Military career was over.

00;04;45;26 - 00;04;49;14

Jason Redman

We were moving into.

00;04;49;16 - 00;04;50;09

Jason Redman

we had bought a new.

00;04;50;09 - 00;04;56;17

Jason Redman

House. we were in talks for the Trident. So this was exciting.

00;04;56;19 - 00;04;59;25

Jason Redman

everything was good on paper.

00;04;59;27 - 00;05;17;07

Jason Redman

but I was really struggling on the inside. I think a lot of those demons in the trauma were kind of eating at me, and I just, continued to push them away. which I tell guys, you can't do, my talk. I've talked about Jimmy Hatch's book called Touching the Dragon. Trauma is like a dragon.

00;05;17;07 - 00;05;24;05

Jason Redman

You can't you can't box it up and chain it up. You know, it will eventually break out and eat you, and it will live in your mind.

00;05;24;05 - 00;05;27;07

Jason Redman

And until you learn to tame it, you'll never get.

00;05;27;07 - 00;05;28;27

Jason Redman

Rid of it. It will never go away.

00;05;28;27 - 00;05;45;23

Jason Redman

You will never be able to totally get rid of the trauma, major trauma that we've been through. So you'll always have that dragon living in there. But the difference is, do you learn, as Jimmy talks about, do you learn to touch the dragon and live with the dragon versus trying to hide the dragon? And I was trying to do the latter.

00;05;45;23 - 00;05;47;23

Jason Redman

I was trying to hide the dragon just.

00;05;47;25 - 00;05;49;15

Jason Redman

When that's probably going.

00;05;49;17 - 00;05;50;22

Jason Redman

Oh, 100%.

00;05;50;24 - 00;05;52;19

Jason Redman

That go through trauma or a lot of trauma.

00;05;52;19 - 00;05;53;09

Jason Redman

they're trying to hide it.

00;05;53;12 - 00;05;57;23

Jason Redman

That's right. We start with stuffing in a box, we train it up, we stick it in the back of our mind, and.

00;05;57;23 - 00;06;00;09

Jason Redman

We're like, I'm just going to ignore that. I'm going to pretend.

00;06;00;09 - 00;06;04;01

Jason Redman

That that doesn't exist. I don't want to talk about it. I don't want to deal with it.

00;06;04;01 - 00;06;09;28

Jason Redman

I'm just going to put it in the back of my mind and keep running forward through life. but once again, it's a dragon.

00;06;10;05 - 00;06;13;11

Jason Redman

And, you know,

00;06;13;13 - 00;06;18;18

Jason Redman

If any of you guys have watched Game of Thrones, you know, dragons burn down cities and they will burn down.

00;06;18;18 - 00;06;19;25

Jason Redman

Your mind when.

00;06;19;25 - 00;06;25;20

Jason Redman

The right parameters come into play. And I guess for me, the right parameters have come into play. Just stress.

00;06;25;20 - 00;06;28;28

Jason Redman

And I was known as the overcome guy.

00;06;28;28 - 00;06;30;00

Jason Redman

The sign on the door.

00;06;30;00 - 00;06;37;23

Jason Redman

I'm talking all over the place. I think there was this tremendous strain to be.

00;06;38;12 - 00;06;39;14

Jason Redman

Always positive.

00;06;39;14 - 00;06;44;15

Jason Redman

And to never show weakness and to, you know, I had kind of gotten this name for that. And I think.

00;06;45;28 - 00;06;48;28

Jason Redman

I think all of it just kind of leveled.

00;06;48;28 - 00;06;53;14

Jason Redman

back up a little. So that was:

00;06;53;16 - 00;06;54;07

Jason Redman

Yeah.

00;06;54;07 - 00;06;55;01

Pat McCalla

trauma and the

00;06;55;01 - 00;06;57;03

Pat McCalla

when were you injured? What year was that?

00;06;57;03 - 00;06;59;25

Jason Redman

. So September:

00;06;59;25 - 00;07;00;27

Jason Redman

So yeah.

00;07;00;27 - 00;07;01;21

Jason Redman

So almost.

00;07;01;21 - 00;07;03;00

Jason Redman

Exactly three years later.

00;07;03;02 - 00;07;09;03

Pat McCalla

let's imagine that we have some listeners that didn't get to hear your last podcast. And if they didn't, I tell them maybe hit pause now and go

00;07;09;03 - 00;07;09;08

Jason Redman

back.

00;07;09;10 - 00;07;11;14

Jason Redman

Yeah. To Brad, go do your homework.

00;07;11;19 - 00;07;13;11

Jason Redman

Do your homework. Yeah.

00;07;21;22 - 00;07;23;20

Jason Redman

Yeah. I,

00;07;23;22 - 00;07;29;04

Jason Redman

I was fortunate enough to be part of, Seal team Task Force.

00;07;29;04 - 00;07;35;22

Jason Redman

Fallujah operating out of Fallujah, Iraq, conducting operations all throughout the Al Anbar province.

00;07;35;24 - 00;07;39;03

Jason Redman

mid-level and high level,

00;07;39;05 - 00;07;44;14

Jason Redman

Direct action or capture kill missions to go after mid-level and high level Al-Qaeda and insurgent leaders.

00;07;44;14 - 00;07;46;24

Jason Redman

A very,

00;07;46;26 - 00;07;48;24

Jason Redman

Amazing impact filled.

00;07;48;24 - 00;07;49;14

Jason Redman

Deployment.

00;07;49;14 - 00;07;52;21

Jason Redman

We conducted over 80 missions,

00;07;52;21 - 00;07;54;02

Jason Redman

capturing and.

00;07;54;02 - 00;07;54;14

Jason Redman

And.

00;07;54;20 - 00;07;55;04

Jason Redman

A lot more.

00;07;55;04 - 00;07;58;17

Jason Redman

Capture and, and at times killing individuals.

00;07;58;17 - 00;07;59;07

Jason Redman

Who,

00;07;59;09 - 00;08;12;03

Jason Redman

Decided they didn't want to be captured. on the very last mission, one of the last missions we were we were one week from going home. So our other team was coming in to start turnover ops.

00;08;12;05 - 00;08;13;21

Jason Redman

And, we got.

00;08;13;21 - 00;08;31;25

Jason Redman

Word that the senior al Qaeda leader for the Al Anbar province, a guy we'd been hunting for deployment, was going to be in a specific time and location launched on that mission. And to make a long story short, we walked into a very well-executed ambush his security team had set up outside the building. He was in.

00;08;31;28 - 00;08;32;21

Jason Redman

my team.

00;08;32;21 - 00;08;36;09

Jason Redman

Walked into that ambush, and several of us were all shot.

00;08;36;09 - 00;08;39;04

Jason Redman

Up by, machine gun,

00;08;39;06 - 00;08;40;09

Jason Redman

Two PKM machine.

00;08;40;09 - 00;08;42;09

Jason Redman

Guns and multiple AK 47.

00;08;42;09 - 00;08;43;08

Jason Redman

So,

00;08;43;08 - 00;08;44;26

Jason Redman

shot up. I was hit eight times between.

00;08;44;26 - 00;08;49;02

Jason Redman

My body and body armor. several teammates were also hit in this gunfight.

00;08;49;29 - 00;08;55;11

Jason Redman

Super intense, very violent, gunfight that lasted about 40 minutes.

00;08;55;13 - 00;08;56;05

Jason Redman

we ended up.

00;08;56;10 - 00;09;00;22

Jason Redman

In order to survive and win this gunfight. we ended up.

00;09;00;22 - 00;09;02;11

Jason Redman

Calling in a.

00;09;02;11 - 00;09;11;27

Jason Redman

Fire mission, which is where we call munitions from an aircraft to the ground from an AC 130 gunship. And it was to today.

00;09;12;00 - 00;09;12;20

Jason Redman

well, the.

00;09;12;20 - 00;09;13;23

Jason Redman

Iraq war is now over.

00;09;13;23 - 00;09;14;16

Jason Redman

But,

00;09;14;19 - 00;09;28;28

Jason Redman

It was the closest fire mission ever executed in the Iraq War. Extreme danger. Close. For the most part. We called rounds directly on our position and miraculously survived. I owe my life to my teammates. I owe my life to that gunship.

00;09;29;00 - 00;09;30;16

Jason Redman

so,

00;09;30;19 - 00;09;34;17

Jason Redman

For a little while during that gunfight or right when it breaks out, they think you were killed.

00;09;34;19 - 00;09;35;16

Jason Redman

Yeah.

00;09;35;18 - 00;09;36;14

Jason Redman

Through the faith.

00;09;36;17 - 00;09;40;13

Jason Redman

That's right. I was, I was in front of them. I was trying to lay down.

00;09;40;13 - 00;09;41;17

Jason Redman

Fire and.

00;09;41;17 - 00;09;42;18

Jason Redman

Was shot.

00;09;43;24 - 00;09;44;22

Jason Redman

Several times.

00;09;44;22 - 00;09;52;25

Jason Redman

And then I got up to move back to where they were, and that's where I took the round in the face. Now, I'm very lucky. All the rounds that, initially hit.

00;09;52;25 - 00;09;55;20

Jason Redman

Me, hit me head on,

00;09;55;22 - 00;10;11;19

Jason Redman

Or from the front, the machine gun round that caught me in the face actually caught me from behind. the guy shot. I had stood up and turned to move back to them, and the round hit me right in front of the ear and traveled through my face and exited my nose. Right cheek area.

00;10;12;24 - 00;10;14;15

Jason Redman

Sees that. I think it's a head shot.

00;10;14;15 - 00;10;17;07

Jason Redman

You're done. Yeah, because it.

00;10;17;09 - 00;10;18;28

Jason Redman

That's right. Well, yes.

00;10;18;28 - 00;10;19;23

Jason Redman

I mean, we.

00;10;19;23 - 00;10;22;25

Jason Redman

Don't no one can remember.

00;10;22;27 - 00;10;26;05

Jason Redman

how long I was out.

00;10;26;07 - 00;10;28;09

Jason Redman

I sure don't remember.

00;10;28;11 - 00;10;28;27

Jason Redman

yeah.

00;10;28;27 - 00;10;31;13

Jason Redman

Because it but it knocked me out, so we estimate.

00;10;31;13 - 00;10;33;03

Jason Redman

Yeah, yeah, yeah. The,

00;10;33;10 - 00;10;37;24

Jason Redman

The unconscious stop as I'm going down. let me check this.

00;10;37;26 - 00;10;39;10

Jason Redman

Yeah.

00;10;39;13 - 00;10;41;18

Jason Redman

yeah. So we maybe five, ten minutes I.

00;10;41;18 - 00;10;51;04

Jason Redman

Was unconscious is what we estimate until there was a lull in fire. And I had come to. And I called out to my team leader and asked. I knew I was super messed up.

00;10;51;06 - 00;10;52;17

Jason Redman

Night time was about 4:00 am in the.

00;10;52;17 - 00;10;54;23

Jason Redman

Morning, and, in Iraq, you know.

00;10;54;23 - 00;10;58;15

Pat McCalla

you call out one of them hears, realizes your life, and then they go,

00;10;58;15 - 00;11;01;21

Jason Redman

Yeah, I called out to my team leader and said,

00;11;01;24 - 00;11;06;23

Jason Redman

How long until the medevac? And that was at that point they realized I was still alive.

00;11;06;23 - 00;11;08;29

Pat McCalla

But the firefight went on for quite a while. And

00;11;08;29 - 00;11;10;09

Jason Redman

Yeah, probably.

00;11;10;11 - 00;11;12;05

Jason Redman

Back in your wounds.

00;11;12;07 - 00;11;15;27

Jason Redman

well, I was still out front at that point, so it was probably another

00;11;15;27 - 00;11;17;08

Jason Redman

my team leader did not run up.

00;11;17;08 - 00;11;23;24

Jason Redman

To get me until after we called in those fire missions, and rightfully so. So I probably laid who knows how long.

00;11;25;25 - 00;11;38;26

Jason Redman

The gunfight lasted about 40 minutes. We, I would estimate, I was shot in the first five minutes. So, I mean, if we do the math, probably another five, ten minutes. So we're ten, 15 minutes. And I call out to.

00;11;38;26 - 00;11;39;24

Jason Redman

Him, he.

00;11;39;24 - 00;11;45;05

Jason Redman

Debates with the gunship for a while about calling in the fire mission.

00;11;45;07 - 00;11;46;07

Jason Redman

probably.

00;11;46;10 - 00;11;52;26

Jason Redman

Maybe we're 30 minutes in when he ran for it and got me after the initial fire missions had suppressed the.

00;11;52;26 - 00;11;54;14

Jason Redman

Enemy and,

00;11;54;17 - 00;11;58;17

Jason Redman

Got me back to the tire, and they got to turn and get on my arm and stuff my face.

00;11;58;21 - 00;12;03;03

Pat McCalla

So, Jason, just because most of our audience, including me, have never been shot, so we don't know what that

00;12;03;11 - 00;12;07;27

Jason Redman

I don't recommend it. If any of you guys are out there like this is a bucket list item.

00;12;08;00 - 00;12;08;20

Jason Redman

Take it off the back.

00;12;08;22 - 00;12;10;13

Jason Redman

Yeah, yeah, take it off the bucket list.

00;12;10;14 - 00;12;10;21

Jason Redman

Are you

00;12;23;17 - 00;12;27;14

Jason Redman

So when I was hit in the arm. Yes, I took two rounds, although I didn't know it was.

00;12;27;14 - 00;12;28;12

Jason Redman

Two rounds at the time.

00;12;28;17 - 00;12;29;28

Jason Redman

I was shot in the arm.

00;12;29;28 - 00;12;33;06

Jason Redman

Right off the, right out of the gate.

00;12;33;09 - 00;12;37;03

Jason Redman

and it,

00;12;37;06 - 00;12;43;22

Jason Redman

So I would find out later. But initially I was shot in the arm and it felt.

00;12;43;22 - 00;12;46;10

Jason Redman

Like, when you get hit in the elbow,

00;12;46;10 - 00;12;47;17

Jason Redman

although amplify that by.

00;12;47;17 - 00;12;54;20

Jason Redman

Like a thousand, it was like an electrical shock that hit me in the arm and traveled up my arm and spiked me right in the back of the head.

00;12;54;20 - 00;12;55;15

Jason Redman

massively.

00;12;55;15 - 00;12;57;07

Jason Redman

Painful. And when I reached over, I couldn't.

00;12;57;07 - 00;13;00;10

Jason Redman

Feel my arm. my arm.

00;13;00;10 - 00;13;01;13

Jason Redman

I'm assuming, probably.

00;13;01;13 - 00;13;04;22

Jason Redman

Caught on my gear, but it killed all the nerves in my lower arm, so I couldn't.

00;13;04;22 - 00;13;06;14

Jason Redman

Feel my arm with my right arm.

00;13;06;18 - 00;13;07;06

Jason Redman

I couldn't feel.

00;13;07;06 - 00;13;10;05

Jason Redman

Anything with my left arm. So in my mind, my initial thought.

00;13;10;05 - 00;13;11;24

Jason Redman

Was I just got my arm shot.

00;13;11;24 - 00;13;12;20

Jason Redman

Off.

00;13;12;20 - 00;13;13;20

Jason Redman

I shot and.

00;13;13;20 - 00;13;18;09

Jason Redman

Moved and then I took a knee.

00;13;18;12 - 00;13;19;14

Jason Redman

wait, wait, wait.

00;13;19;14 - 00;13;21;09

Pat McCalla

After you got shot.

00;13;21;09 - 00;13;22;17

Jason Redman

They were shooting at me.

00;13;22;21 - 00;13;24;07

Jason Redman

And you're shot?

00;13;24;09 - 00;13;24;29

Jason Redman

Yes.

00;13;25;02 - 00;13;27;22

Jason Redman

Yeah. Because you don't want to stay in the same position.

00;13;27;22 - 00;13;31;05

Jason Redman

I mean, we trained to like you got to. You got to shoot and move. So.

00;13;31;05 - 00;13;34;24

Jason Redman

So I moved, and then I kneeled, which I probably.

00;13;34;24 - 00;13;35;28

Jason Redman

Should have got all the way down.

00;13;35;28 - 00;13;38;12

Jason Redman

But I was still. Everything was so chaotic. I was.

00;13;38;12 - 00;13;38;29

Jason Redman

Trying.

00;13;38;29 - 00;13;39;12

Jason Redman

To figure.

00;13;39;12 - 00;13;44;28

Jason Redman

Out, where are the guys? Where is all the gunfire coming from?

00;13;45;00 - 00;13;47;17

Jason Redman

And, and I.

00;13;47;17 - 00;13;51;17

Jason Redman

Guess, I guess at that point was.

00;13;51;17 - 00;13;57;00

Jason Redman

When the guys saw me get up and turn to move back to them. And when I got shot in the head.

00;13;57;02 - 00;13;57;11

Jason Redman

I.

00;13;57;15 - 00;13;58;11

Jason Redman

When I came to after.

00;13;58;11 - 00;14;00;23

Jason Redman

That, I don't remember any pain.

00;14;00;25 - 00;14;02;14

Jason Redman

At least up until the point.

00;14;02;14 - 00;14;02;28

Jason Redman

When.

00;14;02;28 - 00;14;03;28

Jason Redman

My team.

00;14;03;28 - 00;14;11;04

Jason Redman

Leader, I think, got me, I felt pain.

00;14;11;04 - 00;14;13;27

Jason Redman

Then. And when they tried to, when when the medevac.

00;14;13;27 - 00;14;19;20

Jason Redman

Helicopter came in and he tried to drag me to the helicopter, that was really painful, too. So that's when I told him to let.

00;14;19;20 - 00;14;20;18

Jason Redman

Me get up and help.

00;14;20;18 - 00;14;22;27

Jason Redman

Me up. And I walked to the helicopter.

00;14;22;27 - 00;14;29;13

Pat McCalla

do you remember, like, when they first came and grabbed you? Did you see them? Could you could you see your teammates?

00;14;29;13 - 00;14;31;22

Jason Redman

My guys, when they got me the first time.

00;14;31;22 - 00;14;35;04

Jason Redman

I don't remember that. There are parts of it I don't remember. They're interesting.

00;14;35;04 - 00;14;36;10

Jason Redman

Like, it.

00;14;36;10 - 00;14;37;18

Jason Redman

Was probably years after the.

00;14;37;18 - 00;14;40;11

Jason Redman

Gunfight, that we were all.

00;14;40;11 - 00;14;40;25

Jason Redman

Hanging out.

00;14;40;25 - 00;14;41;11

Jason Redman

Together one.

00;14;41;11 - 00;14;45;24

Jason Redman

Night, and my medic, Luke,

00;14;45;27 - 00;14;49;26

Jason Redman

Was, like, telling this story. You know, he's like, you remember when this happened?

00;14;49;27 - 00;14;51;16

Jason Redman

I was like, I don't remember that.

00;14;51;18 - 00;14;55;06

Jason Redman

So apparently, in the midst of this gunfight,

00;14;55;09 - 00;14;55;22

Jason Redman

They're about.

00;14;55;22 - 00;15;03;10

Jason Redman

We're back behind the tire. The it's about 45, 50ft. guys that are engaging us in the vegetation.

00;15;03;13 - 00;15;04;16

Jason Redman

And there were.

00;15;04;16 - 00;15;05;11

Jason Redman

The vegetation.

00;15;05;11 - 00;15;08;27

Jason Redman

Was, I don't know, 15, 20ft.

00;15;08;27 - 00;15;09;14

Jason Redman

High.

00;15;09;14 - 00;15;14;03

Jason Redman

it kind of reminded me, like, like a bamboo grove type, very thick.

00;15;14;03 - 00;15;16;07

Jason Redman

and one of them, I think it.

00;15;16;07 - 00;15;18;01

Jason Redman

Might have been Luke said, hey, I'm going to throw a.

00;15;18;01 - 00;15;22;08

Jason Redman

Grenade. And, I had grown up in the jungle.

00;15;22;13 - 00;15;33;20

Jason Redman

I had spent all my time in the early days in the jungle learning jungle warfare. And there was, cardinal rule. We were taught don't throw grenades into vegetation, because they will hit a branch and bounce back on you.

00;15;33;23 - 00;15;36;08

Jason Redman

Yeah. So apparently,

00;15;36;10 - 00;15;37;25

Jason Redman

I was.

00;15;37;28 - 00;15;38;27

Jason Redman

Laying behind the.

00;15;38;27 - 00;15;47;17

Jason Redman

Tire in a moment of unconsciousness, but somehow heard this, and they said. I sat up like I was possessed. You know, face all blown out, and.

00;15;47;17 - 00;15;48;23

Jason Redman

I was like.

00;15;48;26 - 00;15;55;21

Jason Redman

Don't throw that grenade. You're going to kill us all. And, like, laid back down. And, so he put his grenade away.

00;15;55;21 - 00;15;57;12

Jason Redman

And like, I don't remember that at all.

00;15;57;16 - 00;15;58;08

Jason Redman

Like, there's no.

00;15;58;08 - 00;16;00;27

Jason Redman

Part of my memory. I mean, okay, so.

00;16;00;27 - 00;16;01;24

Jason Redman

You saved your team's.

00;16;01;24 - 00;16;14;17

Jason Redman

Life. you know, but, yeah, you don't want to. I don't know, you know, the upside is he might have taken out the machinegun and finished everything. He would have, you know, maybe with an amazing throw, he would have put it right through the vegetation. So who knows, man?

00;16;14;17 - 00;16;15;18

Jason Redman

but, yeah.

00;16;15;18 - 00;16;16;02

Jason Redman

I don't.

00;16;16;02 - 00;16;16;28

Jason Redman

Remember everything.

00;16;16;28 - 00;16;18;26

Jason Redman

I definitely thought I did. There are.

00;16;18;26 - 00;16;20;15

Jason Redman

Pieces.

00;16;20;18 - 00;16;20;27

Jason Redman

there are a.

00;16;20;27 - 00;16;21;25

Jason Redman

Lot of things that.

00;16;21;27 - 00;16;23;07

Jason Redman

I.

00;16;23;09 - 00;16;25;24

Jason Redman

I it was funny, when I got to the hospital.

00;16;25;24 - 00;16;30;06

Jason Redman

The doctors were like, you know, how long were you unconscious? And I was like, I had never lost consciousness.

00;16;30;13 - 00;16;35;24

Jason Redman

Which in my mind I believed like because you don't realize your unconscious.

00;16;35;24 - 00;16;37;00

Jason Redman

You know, your your stream of.

00;16;37;00 - 00;16;49;25

Jason Redman

Consciousness. If you go unconscious, it immediately picks back up when you wake back up. So there's no gap in your mind. so yeah, I was adamant. Like I never lost consciousness. I knew exactly what was going on.

00;16;49;25 - 00;16;54;00

Jason Redman

And then when the guys got back, they were like, oh yeah, dude, you were you were in and.

00;16;54;00 - 00;16;56;29

Jason Redman

Out the whole time. And I later met the TF one.

00;16;56;29 - 00;17;03;08

Jason Redman

60th Special Operations Medevac crew, and they told me more about the helicopter flight and.

00;17;04;21 - 00;17;06;06

Jason Redman

Interesting things like.

00;17;06;06 - 00;17;07;19

Jason Redman

The,

00;17;07;21 - 00;17;27;23

Jason Redman

That helicopter was rigged for two wounded individuals, and there were three of us, plus DJI, who got in the helicopter with us. so they flew with the doors open, which you had three guys who had been all shot up. I had three gunshot wounds. man had three gunshot wounds. Luke almost had his leg taken off.

00;17;27;28 - 00;17;28;22

Jason Redman

So we're.

00;17;28;22 - 00;17;31;05

Jason Redman

Bleeding literally all over.

00;17;31;05 - 00;17;39;01

Jason Redman

The place. Well, this helicopter is flying at max speed to get us to Baghdad with the doors open. Probably 160 miles an hour.

00;17;39;04 - 00;17;51;10

Jason Redman

g, Max speed probably was one:

00;17;51;10 - 00;17;51;17

Jason Redman

On a.

00;17;51;17 - 00;17;54;25

Jason Redman

Helicopter. So the the flight guys.

00;17;54;25 - 00;18;01;29

Jason Redman

And the medic were telling me that it created this mist of blood inside the helicopter.

00;18;02;02 - 00;18;04;04

Jason Redman

And, when they landed.

00;18;04;04 - 00;18;06;01

Jason Redman

And they got us off the helicopter and.

00;18;06;01 - 00;18;07;06

Jason Redman

They they went.

00;18;07;06 - 00;18;12;18

Jason Redman

Back to base, the whole inside of the helicopter was covered with blood, like it took them

00;18;12;18 - 00;18;14;15

Jason Redman

like he said a month to to.

00;18;14;21 - 00;18;17;08

Jason Redman

like, get all the blood out of all the dials.

00;18;17;08 - 00;18;18;01

Jason Redman

And knobs and.

00;18;18;01 - 00;18;19;26

Jason Redman

They didn't know we survived.

00;18;19;28 - 00;18;28;27

Jason Redman

They didn't think I survived. so it was kind of crazy. years later, I tried to track down who was the medevac crew.

00;18;28;29 - 00;18;30;18

Jason Redman

And when I did that.

00;18;30;18 - 00;18;34;04

Jason Redman

And got connected to them, that was the first time that they realized that.

00;18;34;04 - 00;18;37;23

Jason Redman

Because you got it for those guys and they're going and flying another.

00;18;37;23 - 00;18;42;24

Jason Redman

Mission, so they're not coming back and checking. They they just they don't know.

00;18;42;26 - 00;18;43;08

Jason Redman

Yeah.

00;18;43;09 - 00;18;47;04

Jason Redman

No. It was really cool to be able to thank them in person. And

00;18;47;07 - 00;18;48;00

Jason Redman

So.

00;18;48;00 - 00;19;01;28

Pat McCalla

Will, I asked you about what your team, if you if you saw your team when they found you. Because I'm sure when you're, you know, as much combat as you guys saw, there's times where you're grabbing someone who's wounded and, you know, there's a wound, but there's other times when you look and go on, this guy's not going to make it.

00;19;02;04 - 00;19;04;27

Jason Redman

Yeah, I think they didn't think I was going to make it.

00;19;04;27 - 00;19;06;05

Jason Redman

No.

00;19;06;05 - 00;19;06;09

Jason Redman

I.

00;19;06;09 - 00;19;08;06

Jason Redman

Have a plaque. One of my most cherished.

00;19;08;06 - 00;19;09;08

Jason Redman

Items that I.

00;19;09;08 - 00;19;10;24

Jason Redman

Have,

00;19;10;26 - 00;19;12;19

Jason Redman

And the Seal teams, when.

00;19;12;19 - 00;19;14;04

Jason Redman

You, you know.

00;19;14;04 - 00;19;15;09

Jason Redman

When you leave commands.

00;19;15;09 - 00;19;16;22

Jason Redman

Typically it's it's.

00;19;16;24 - 00;19;17;10

Jason Redman

Normal.

00;19;17;10 - 00;19;20;07

Jason Redman

That they provide you a gift. And usually what it is.

00;19;20;12 - 00;19;25;19

Jason Redman

It could be a plaque, but there's been a tradition that it's a paddle sometimes, depending on.

00;19;25;19 - 00;19;27;22

Jason Redman

What, troop.

00;19;27;22 - 00;19;31;10

Jason Redman

Or you're assigned to, it could be something specific to.

00;19;31;10 - 00;19;34;14

Jason Redman

The, the unit logo, things like that.

00;19;34;14 - 00;19;34;26

Jason Redman

But

00;19;34;26 - 00;19;36;17

Jason Redman

most of the time it's a paddle.

00;19;36;17 - 00;19;40;02

Jason Redman

And then they'll put unit insignia on the paddle and stuff like that.

00;19;40;05 - 00;19;41;07

Jason Redman

So when I left Seal Team.

00;19;41;07 - 00;19;42;10

Jason Redman

Ten, the guys gave me.

00;19;42;10 - 00;19;44;11

Jason Redman

A paddle. And then if.

00;19;44;11 - 00;19;47;15

Jason Redman

If they like you, they put a lot of work into.

00;19;47;18 - 00;19;47;25

Jason Redman

the.

00;19;47;25 - 00;19;49;26

Jason Redman

Narrative they put on the paddle.

00;19;49;29 - 00;19;50;17

Jason Redman

And they don't.

00;19;50;17 - 00;20;00;29

Jason Redman

Like it. Usually it doesn't say anything or it'll just say, hey, fair winds and following seas, which is you know, like nice, politically correct, maybe speak for, hey, go screw yourself.

00;20;00;29 - 00;20;03;01

Jason Redman

and they had written this really amazing.

00;20;03;06 - 00;20;03;27

Jason Redman

Limerick.

00;20;03;27 - 00;20;07;17

Jason Redman

Poem, and, and it.

00;20;07;17 - 00;20;12;11

Jason Redman

Was this the team that I screwed up in this, the team.

00;20;12;11 - 00;20;16;22

Jason Redman

That I had messed up. And I know a lot of those guys were not happy for me to be.

00;20;16;25 - 00;20;17;12

Jason Redman

a leader.

00;20;17;12 - 00;20;18;05

Jason Redman

In that troop.

00;20;18;25 - 00;20;23;03

Jason Redman

And to come full circle and earn back the trust and credibility.

00;20;23;03 - 00;20;25;12

Jason Redman

And, and the respect that that plaque.

00;20;25;12 - 00;20;28;12

Jason Redman

Showed, was really amazing.

00;20;28;12 - 00;20;29;07

Jason Redman

And and it.

00;20;29;07 - 00;20;34;27

Jason Redman

Means, hangs in my office now, but, it means so much to me.

00;20;34;27 - 00;20;35;26

Jason Redman

But anyways, in that, in.

00;20;35;26 - 00;20;38;15

Jason Redman

That write up, there was something about, hey, in the middle of the gunfight.

00;20;38;16 - 00;20;40;28

Jason Redman

You know, you got hit in the face.

00;20;40;28 - 00;20;41;28

Jason Redman

And we when we looked.

00;20;41;28 - 00;20;42;28

Jason Redman

At the holy in.

00;20;42;28 - 00;20;45;09

Jason Redman

In your face, you know, we put that in the holy shit.

00;20;45;10 - 00;20;48;28

Jason Redman

Book. so yeah, I mean, they did not.

00;20;49;00 - 00;20;50;28

Jason Redman

I don't think they thought I was going to make it.

00;20;50;28 - 00;20;57;03

Pat McCalla

we circle back around. That's:

00;20;57;03 - 00;21;02;28

Pat McCalla

fairly well known and famous now because, you've been right. Have you already met with the president by then? Because he heard about your.

00;21;03;00 - 00;21;08;13

Jason Redman

I did meet with the president. I met with the president in the fall. So I wouldn't say I was famous then because,

00;21;08;13 - 00;21;13;10

Jason Redman

I was known probably somewhat in the military community, and the story was.

00;21;13;10 - 00;21;15;18

Jason Redman

Getting out a little bit.

00;21;15;18 - 00;21;20;26

Jason Redman

Externally. I'd done some news stuff and things like that. I mean, the book had not come out, so I really hadn't popped.

00;21;20;26 - 00;21;24;28

Jason Redman

I wasn't I was doing some on social media, not a ton.

00;21;25;24 - 00;21;26;17

Jason Redman

wasn't speaking.

00;21;26;17 - 00;21;28;24

Jason Redman

Yet because I couldn't, because I was still active.

00;21;28;24 - 00;21;30;17

Jason Redman

Do I was speaking in the military.

00;21;30;20 - 00;21;36;22

Jason Redman

I wasn't speaking yet on the career side. So we were making the transition out of the military.

00;21;36;22 - 00;21;39;00

Pat McCalla

you start in:

00;21;39;00 - 00;21;41;17

Jason Redman

No, I, I'm comes to you.

00;21;49;16 - 00;21;55;00

Jason Redman

fit. I started a nonprofit in:

00;21;55;00 - 00;21;56;20

Jason Redman

I'm trying to do the math.

00;21;56;22 - 00;21;57;16

Jason Redman

but.

00;21;57;19 - 00;21;59;22

Jason Redman

It was close to.

00;21;59;22 - 00;22;02;08

Pat McCalla

nice thing for you is anytime you forget something, you can see

00;22;02;16 - 00;22;02;21

Jason Redman

I.

00;22;02;21 - 00;22;03;19

Jason Redman

Got shot in the head.

00;22;03;19 - 00;22;06;07

Jason Redman

You know, he was arguing. Gosh.

00;22;06;10 - 00;22;07;11

Jason Redman

Man, you prejudiced.

00;22;07;11 - 00;22;09;00

Jason Redman

People out there.

00;22;09;02 - 00;22;16;01

Jason Redman

I know that was the running joke for years. You know, with my wife, you know, I'd like, forget something. I'd be like, what do you expect? I got shot in the head. Yeah. She doesn't take that anymore.

00;22;16;04 - 00;22;17;07

Jason Redman

Yeah.

00;22;17;07 - 00;22;24;29

Jason Redman

But, yeah, started struggling and started, I was having I was having a lot of issues sleeping.

00;22;24;29 - 00;22;26;09

Jason Redman

That was an issue.

00;22;26;21 - 00;22;28;28

Jason Redman

I was very angry.

00;22;29;00 - 00;22;30;11

Jason Redman

which is common.

00;22;31;17 - 00;22;33;02

Jason Redman

Is it, like, just snapping?

00;22;33;04 - 00;22;34;15

Jason Redman

Yeah. Yeah.

00;22;34;19 - 00;22;36;07

Jason Redman

And I started to.

00;22;36;07 - 00;22;44;19

Jason Redman

Nurse it with alcohol, which is what. And I talked about this at the Arizona Gang investigators. I think in the protector community, we are a.

00;22;44;19 - 00;22;45;20

Jason Redman

Community that.

00;22;45;20 - 00;23;01;03

Jason Redman

Alcohol is such a a part of our community for good or for bad. I mean, we use it for social, and it helps us to bond and builds amazing camaraderie. But the downside of that is for many of us, when things start to go south.

00;23;01;05 - 00;23;01;22

Jason Redman

It then.

00;23;01;22 - 00;23;02;20

Jason Redman

Becomes a.

00;23;02;21 - 00;23;07;16

Jason Redman

Numbing, a numbing agent. Yeah. And, and that's.

00;23;07;16 - 00;23;13;15

Jason Redman

Exactly what I started doing. I mean, I got to a point where I was probably drinking at least half a bottle of scotch a.

00;23;13;15 - 00;23;16;07

Jason Redman

Night, and I'd go to the.

00;23;16;07 - 00;23;31;28

Jason Redman

Room and just try and stay away from my wife and kids, and she'd say, hey, let's go to the soccer game, which I was always. I tried whenever I was home, being involved with my kids and her, and I was kind of suddenly doing all the opposite things.

00;23;32;00 - 00;23;33;00

Jason Redman

And,

00;23;33;03 - 00;23;34;23

Jason Redman

And I think she wanted to give me space.

00;23;34;24 - 00;23;40;12

Jason Redman

We talk about this in the book that sometimes, you know, if you win, you sometimes have to.

00;23;40;12 - 00;23;41;03

Jason Redman

Give people space.

00;23;41;03 - 00;23;52;10

Jason Redman

Sometimes they need to sort things out. So I think she tried to give me as much time as possible to sort things out, but I think she saw that I was not sorting things out. I was just continuing to get worse.

00;23;52;10 - 00;23;53;22

Jason Redman

And,

00;23;53;25 - 00;23;55;21

Jason Redman

And finally we were driving to.

00;23;55;23 - 00;24;00;29

Jason Redman

we were driving to one of our, nonprofit events or some of the planning for it, at least we were driving out.

00;24;00;29 - 00;24;03;28

Jason Redman

To that. And, I, I wasn't.

00;24;03;28 - 00;24;12;02

Jason Redman

Saying anything, just driving along. And she broke the silence and said, hey, this is how it ends.

00;24;12;04 - 00;24;16;10

Jason Redman

And, I was like, what?

00;24;16;13 - 00;24;18;07

Jason Redman

How what ends? What are you talking about?

00;24;18;11 - 00;24;24;02

Jason Redman

And she goes, this is our our marriage is going to end if you do not

00;24;24;02 - 00;24;26;01

Jason Redman

get some help.

00;24;26;04 - 00;24;27;04

Jason Redman

And,

00;24;27;07 - 00;24;33;04

Jason Redman

It was such a shock because we had, it was one of our

00;24;33;07 - 00;24;34;11

Jason Redman

In in the, in the.

00;24;34;11 - 00;24;43;03

Jason Redman

Relationship book, I call them rules of engagement. You have to have rules of engagement in your. We had them in the military. You should have them in your relationship.

00;24;43;05 - 00;24;45;22

Jason Redman

the ways you fight, the way you talk.

00;24;45;24 - 00;24;46;18

Jason Redman

you can't just.

00;24;46;18 - 00;24;47;10

Jason Redman

You don't.

00;24;47;13 - 00;24;48;23

Jason Redman

You can't shoot and throw.

00;24;48;23 - 00;25;00;07

Jason Redman

Bombs at your spouse. Yet I watch people that do it all the time. And one of our non-negotiables is we never brought up divorce, ever. It was a non-negotiable. So the mere fact that she kind of threw.

00;25;00;07 - 00;25;00;18

Jason Redman

Out.

00;25;00;24 - 00;25;01;20

Jason Redman

She didn't say divorce.

00;25;01;20 - 00;25;03;11

Jason Redman

She just said, this is how

00;25;03;11 - 00;25;06;26

Jason Redman

this is going to end. If you don't.

00;25;06;29 - 00;25;10;22

Jason Redman

like, like she.

00;25;10;25 - 00;25;11;28

Jason Redman

Punched me in the head.

00;25;11;28 - 00;25;12;12

Pat McCalla

Yeah.

00;25;12;15 - 00;25;13;03

Jason Redman

So, yeah.

00;25;13;03 - 00;25;15;15

Jason Redman

That opened a dialog and.

00;25;15;15 - 00;25;16;01

Jason Redman

She was.

00;25;16;01 - 00;25;17;04

Jason Redman

Like, you, you need.

00;25;17;04 - 00;25;21;19

Jason Redman

To go get some help. Like you're not you're not figuring this out on your own.

00;25;21;22 - 00;25;22;29

Jason Redman

And,

00;25;23;01 - 00;25;26;17

Jason Redman

And it was good. And thankfully, I was still active duty.

00;25;26;19 - 00;25;41;24

Jason Redman

the command I was at, we had psychologists and counselors and all that. And so I told her, I said, okay, I'm going to go talk to him. I did that next week. And and it helped and let me down a path to start. I needed to address some of the things in my life. I needed to cut out the alcohol.

00;25;41;24 - 00;25;42;17

Jason Redman

So,

00;25;43;28 - 00;25;49;08

Jason Redman

I think I stopped drinking for a while, during some of that period.

00;25;49;11 - 00;25;51;04

Jason Redman

And,

00;25;51;06 - 00;25;52;11

Jason Redman

And yeah, that's what I tell.

00;25;52;11 - 00;25;53;08

Jason Redman

People. you.

00;25;53;08 - 00;26;05;18

Jason Redman

Know, the interesting thing, and I talk about this in my talks, none of us in the community, ever in training.

00;26;05;20 - 00;26;07;03

Jason Redman

at least in at least.

00;26;07;03 - 00;26;21;19

Jason Redman

Everything that I've seen, there may be some people that try and say, you know, I don't know if I agree with that, but for the most part, you know, we always have a partner. No one's going into a fire by themself. They have someone with them, in in the shield teams all through.

00;26;22;07 - 00;26;26;09

Jason Redman

Training. I had a swim buddy when I went to Ranger school. I had a ranger buddy.

00;26;26;11 - 00;26;26;20

Jason Redman

any.

00;26;26;20 - 00;26;27;28

Jason Redman

Time we're doing things.

00;26;27;28 - 00;26;30;07

Jason Redman

In combat, at a minimum, it is.

00;26;30;07 - 00;26;34;24

Jason Redman

A two man room entry. We do not do one man room entries yet.

00;26;34;24 - 00;26;35;26

Jason Redman

Why is it when we're.

00;26;35;26 - 00;26;39;26

Jason Redman

All struggling, we want to do it on our own. And I was the same man.

00;26;39;26 - 00;26;42;00

Jason Redman

I'm here. I am doing one man here.

00;26;42;05 - 00;26;43;24

Pat McCalla

Because you bring up a great point.

00;26;43;24 - 00;26;50;07

Pat McCalla

I think we all know it's not healthy to do that. And everything else in your training tells you not to. And yet

00;26;50;07 - 00;26;50;28

Pat McCalla

we we

00;26;50;28 - 00;26;52;12

Jason Redman

Well, protectors were strong.

00;26;52;14 - 00;26;55;09

Jason Redman

We we we want to protect. We want to.

00;26;55;10 - 00;26;56;17

Jason Redman

Help the weak.

00;26;56;17 - 00;27;01;17

Jason Redman

I know 100%. It is hard to say. I am in a moment.

00;27;01;17 - 00;27;04;28

Jason Redman

Of weakness and I am struggling with something that.

00;27;05;00 - 00;27;05;08

Jason Redman

you know.

00;27;05;08 - 00;27;06;21

Jason Redman

I think there's been some messaging.

00;27;06;21 - 00;27;07;27

Jason Redman

Like, hey, you're a.

00;27;08;03 - 00;27;11;18

Jason Redman

You're a weak stick. If you know, these things bother you.

00;27;11;18 - 00;27;13;00

Jason Redman

And that's unfortunate.

00;27;13;00 - 00;27;14;03

Jason Redman

Because.

00;27;14;06 - 00;27;15;01

Jason Redman

Hey, man,

00;27;15;12 - 00;27;25;20

Jason Redman

They may bother you as reality. I mean, seeing people's insides on their outside, seeing kids shots young women shot, even seeing dudes shot and killed or blown up or,

00;27;25;20 - 00;27;28;08

Jason Redman

you know, I mean, I have friends that are in the fire service and some of the.

00;27;28;08 - 00;27;35;20

Jason Redman

Horrific wrecks they've showed up on where babies are ejected from cars. my buddy was riding down the road, and.

00;27;35;22 - 00;27;36;27

Jason Redman

a lady without.

00;27;36;27 - 00;27;39;25

Jason Redman

A helmet fell off the back of a bike at 60 plus miles an.

00;27;39;25 - 00;27;42;19

Jason Redman

Hour and smacked her head in the ground and was run over.

00;27;42;22 - 00;27;45;04

Jason Redman

Splattered all across that highway.

00;27;45;06 - 00;27;46;16

Jason Redman

The rest of your life. Yeah.

00;27;46;16 - 00;27;48;11

Jason Redman

And those are. Those are mental.

00;27;48;11 - 00;27;49;10

Jason Redman

Scars, man.

00;27;49;10 - 00;27;51;24

Jason Redman

That's that's trauma. And that's not.

00;27;51;24 - 00;27;53;27

Jason Redman

Weakness. That's just humanity.

00;27;53;29 - 00;27;56;24

Jason Redman

I was just going to say that it's humanity. Yeah. You know, if

00;27;56;24 - 00;28;00;25

Pat McCalla

you can see all of that and it doesn't even affect you, is

00;28;01;04 - 00;28;03;19

Jason Redman

That's a problem. Yeah, yeah.

00;28;03;21 - 00;28;04;21

Jason Redman

And I told those.

00;28;04;21 - 00;28;07;25

Jason Redman

Guys at two, you can't lose your humanity. Humanity.

00;28;07;25 - 00;28;08;20

Jason Redman

That's an okay.

00;28;08;20 - 00;28;11;06

Jason Redman

Thing. If it still bothers you, it should.

00;28;11;09 - 00;28;14;16

Jason Redman

But how do we how do we get back to that? Well, you.

00;28;14;16 - 00;28;31;15

Jason Redman

Gotta lean back in to, There are good people in this world, and I think family and a spouse or some of the most powerful things that can do that, I think. I think God intended us for that, to have a spouse and to raise kids. And I think that's the greatest purpose we can have. I mean, don't get me wrong.

00;28;31;15 - 00;28;34;01

Jason Redman

I, you know, being a protector was amazing.

00;28;34;04 - 00;28;37;22

Jason Redman

but, yeah, that I.

00;28;37;22 - 00;28;38;21

Jason Redman

Think makes a difference.

00;28;38;21 - 00;28;41;11

Jason Redman

And she called me out on that and I needed it.

00;28;41;11 - 00;28;42;06

Jason Redman

And she, she.

00;28;42;06 - 00;28;43;21

Jason Redman

So but we, we talk.

00;28;43;21 - 00;28;45;21

Jason Redman

About in the book.

00;28;45;24 - 00;28;46;27

Jason Redman

I would not have listened.

00;28;46;28 - 00;28;50;12

Jason Redman

If that had happened on, I don't know.

00;28;50;15 - 00;28;54;27

Jason Redman

Three months into our relationship, the trust and

00;28;55;00 - 00;28;55;22

Jason Redman

That path.

00;28;55;25 - 00;28;56;23

Jason Redman

It would be no different.

00;28;56;23 - 00;28;57;19

Jason Redman

Than if you're a part.

00;28;57;19 - 00;28;59;06

Jason Redman

Of a new unit, you.

00;28;59;06 - 00;29;01;04

Jason Redman

Know, fire, military.

00;29;01;07 - 00;29;02;10

Jason Redman

police.

00;29;02;12 - 00;29;07;20

Jason Redman

And some brand new person comes in and starts calling you out on stuff. You're not going to listen to that person.

00;29;07;20 - 00;29;15;13

Jason Redman

You don't know who they are. They've not proved themselves. You don't know anything about them. There's there's. And so it takes time to build that. That's where you got to put the reps in.

00;29;15;15 - 00;29;32;19

Pat McCalla

Well, that's what I was going to ask. What reps did you put in as a couple. Because there's some couples that have been married for ten or 15 or 20 years, and they weren't putting in the reps or doing the right things. And so they're not in that place. But you guys were doing something that helped you be in the place that when she called you out on that, even though you didn't want to hear it.

00;29;32;21 - 00;29;35;02

Pat McCalla

she was a truth teller in your life that you trusted.

00;29;35;02 - 00;29;36;06

Jason Redman

Yeah. We break the.

00;29;36;06 - 00;29;42;13

Jason Redman

Book into three parts. mission training under fire.

00;29;42;16 - 00;29;44;04

Jason Redman

For anybody who is.

00;29;44;04 - 00;29;46;09

Jason Redman

Is listening to this.

00;29;46;12 - 00;29;47;17

Jason Redman

the most critical thing you.

00;29;47;17 - 00;29;54;01

Jason Redman

Can have in your relationship is a shared mission. Your values and your mission should be aligned.

00;29;54;04 - 00;29;58;14

Jason Redman

And too many people go into a relationship. And there are there are things that are not aligned.

00;29;58;21 - 00;30;00;16

Jason Redman

Your mission is not aligned.

00;30;00;18 - 00;30;11;16

Jason Redman

And we'll say, well, you know what? I you know, this person so sexy. And maybe the physical intimacy is amazing. So we'll we'll say, maybe that's not that big a deal.

00;30;11;17 - 00;30;15;21

Jason Redman

Because we like all this stuff. But you're looking at the short term and not the long term.

00;30;15;23 - 00;30;17;29

Jason Redman

And what happens is people will go ahead and get.

00;30;17;29 - 00;30;21;02

Jason Redman

Married when there's a fracture. Missions are not.

00;30;21;02 - 00;30;25;06

Jason Redman

Aligned. that.

00;30;25;08 - 00;30;28;11

Jason Redman

Values are not aligned. And you don't have this shared mission.

00;30;28;13 - 00;30;29;11

Jason Redman

That.

00;30;29;14 - 00;30;31;14

Jason Redman

Those things start to.

00;30;33;03 - 00;30;33;26

Jason Redman

Fester up.

00;30;33;26 - 00;30;36;10

Jason Redman

And what happens is a lot of people are really good.

00;30;36;10 - 00;30;37;25

Jason Redman

At ignoring them for years.

00;30;37;25 - 00;30;38;23

Jason Redman

And hoping that.

00;30;38;23 - 00;30;40;19

Jason Redman

They'll change, and now they'll get on course.

00;30;40;19 - 00;30;44;07

Jason Redman

A perfect example we've seen. And what are these things?

00;30;44;10 - 00;30;46;19

Jason Redman

Money is a big one.

00;30;46;22 - 00;30;48;21

Jason Redman

it could be.

00;30;48;24 - 00;30;50;26

Jason Redman

how we spend our time.

00;30;50;28 - 00;30;52;03

Jason Redman

Can be a big one.

00;30;52;05 - 00;30;54;15

Jason Redman

Are things that you would say our shared mission or.

00;30;54;17 - 00;30;59;07

Jason Redman

That's right. Yeah. political views are a big one.

00;30;59;07 - 00;30;59;24

Jason Redman

Kids.

00;30;59;24 - 00;31;02;28

Jason Redman

And how we're going to raise kids are a big one.

00;31;03;00 - 00;31;04;14

Jason Redman

where we want to go in life.

00;31;04;14 - 00;31;06;07

Jason Redman

And what our what our end state.

00;31;06;07 - 00;31;10;18

Jason Redman

Are you are you savers or spenders and how does that process happen? These are all things.

00;31;10;18 - 00;31;14;15

Jason Redman

That need to be identified early because they become major

00;31;14;15 - 00;31;15;05

Jason Redman

problems.

00;31;15;07 - 00;31;15;29

Jason Redman

And a lot of times

00;31;15;29 - 00;31;17;16

Pat McCalla

we marry someone. Who is

00;31;17;18 - 00;31;24;02

Pat McCalla

Maybe they have the same values but we're a little opposite on. Like so spender or saver. One of those a lot of couples are

00;31;24;02 - 00;31;24;28

Jason Redman

Yeah.

00;31;34;25 - 00;31;51;07

Jason Redman

That's right. You can compromise on where you're going to meet in the middle. You can decide what, where, where do what are we going to do and how do we do it. And that now that becomes training. Yeah. So that that is the training phase. And the training phase never ends because the Jason Redmond, my wife Matt.

00;31;51;07 - 00;31;58;07

Jason Redman

Is very different from the Jason Redmond ten years after we met and very different from the Jason Redmond today.

00;31;58;07 - 00;32;11;05

Pat McCalla

Oh, my goodness. I'm so glad I got to pause for a second here. And just I'm so glad you brought that up, because here's a big pet peeve of mine. Whether you agree with getting married young is good or bad. I don't I don't care so much. But the argument always here, I'm bringing this up because I got married young.

00;32;11;06 - 00;32;28;12

Pat McCalla

I got married at 19. We've been happily married for 33 years, had to work through a lot of stuff, like all couples, but a lot of times people say like, well, don't get married young because you know, you're going to change. And I always want to jump back and go, you're going to I don't care if you get married at 30, at 40, you're going to be different than you were at

00;32;28;20 - 00;32;29;18

Jason Redman

That's right. The

00;32;36;11 - 00;32;37;29

Jason Redman

long. So. Okay.

00;32;38;01 - 00;32;38;13

Jason Redman

No.

00;32;38;13 - 00;32;50;11

Jason Redman

And that's why no, it's good because it's accurate. It's true. And that's why the training never ends. I mean, you think about in this book was written, it'll apply to anybody, but it was written really.

00;32;50;11 - 00;32;54;27

Jason Redman

For the protector community who has the highest divorce rate. Divorce rates across the country.

00;32;54;28 - 00;32;58;14

Jason Redman

Are are spiking. We're at, I believe.

00;32;58;16 - 00;32;59;07

Jason Redman

I think the last.

00;32;59;07 - 00;33;03;03

Jason Redman

Thing I read, we're almost at a 50% of divorce rate here in America.

00;33;03;06 - 00;33;11;26

Jason Redman

In the protector community, it's significantly higher. It's 60 to 70%. And law enforcement and fire, military. I don't know what.

00;33;11;26 - 00;33;17;28

Jason Redman

Conventional military is. I would say it's pretty high in special operations. It's 90%. I mean, we're off the charts.

00;33;19;05 - 00;33;22;12

Jason Redman

So if you think about being part of.

00;33;22;12 - 00;33;24;11

Jason Redman

Police, fire or military.

00;33;24;11 - 00;33;25;15

Jason Redman

What what are we doing.

00;33;25;15 - 00;33;28;05

Jason Redman

All the time? Every day, day in, day out?

00;33;28;05 - 00;33;30;21

Jason Redman

You're training. You're training.

00;33;30;24 - 00;33;32;08

Jason Redman

For,

00;33;32;11 - 00;33;40;09

Jason Redman

The current situations you may encounter. You're training for new situations you may encounter, you're putting in new technologies, you're putting in.

00;33;40;09 - 00;33;40;14

Jason Redman

hey.

00;33;40;14 - 00;33;46;25

Jason Redman

There's a new gang, there's a new problem. There's a new enemy. That's right. It never ends. Yeah. Many couples.

00;33;46;28 - 00;33;48;15

Jason Redman

Don't stop training.

00;33;48;17 - 00;33;49;23

Jason Redman

You. And, you.

00;33;49;23 - 00;33;50;21

Jason Redman

Know, if you can look at.

00;33;50;21 - 00;33;51;25

Jason Redman

It this way.

00;33;51;28 - 00;33;55;00

Jason Redman

How do you communicate? How do you constantly talk about, you.

00;33;55;00 - 00;33;59;18

Jason Redman

Know, your your dreams and goals and where you're going? And those are going to change. So now we got to.

00;33;59;18 - 00;34;00;20

Jason Redman

Adjust the plan and we.

00;34;00;20 - 00;34;00;28

Jason Redman

Got to.

00;34;00;29 - 00;34;03;05

Jason Redman

Just how we talk.

00;34;03;08 - 00;34;04;07

Jason Redman

where where.

00;34;04;07 - 00;34;04;25

Jason Redman

Are we both.

00;34;04;25 - 00;34;05;17

Jason Redman

At at.

00;34;05;17 - 00;34;08;11

Jason Redman

These different points in our lives. So the training.

00;34;08;17 - 00;34;09;02

Jason Redman

Really.

00;34;09;02 - 00;34;16;29

Jason Redman

Never ends. but that's what makes the difference. And there's a level of commitment that has to happen with that. You have to put in the time.

00;34;16;29 - 00;34;17;28

Jason Redman

And spend time with that.

00;34;17;28 - 00;34;20;05

Jason Redman

Individual. That's why it's,

00;34;20;05 - 00;34;21;10

Jason Redman

there are.

00;34;21;17 - 00;34;23;25

Jason Redman

Members of the protector community who.

00;34;23;25 - 00;34;34;19

Jason Redman

For whatever reason, don't want to share that side of their lives with their spouse. And on one side, I know some guys are like, well, I want to protect her.

00;34;34;21 - 00;34;36;18

Jason Redman

which I would say that's not.

00;34;36;18 - 00;34;38;02

Jason Redman

A good.

00;34;38;04 - 00;34;38;24

Jason Redman

Reason.

00;34;38;24 - 00;34;39;08

Jason Redman

And the other.

00;34;39;08 - 00;34;46;06

Jason Redman

Side is, I don't know, maybe a selfish side where, hey, this is my world, you know? So I'm going to keep a separation here. But either.

00;34;46;06 - 00;34;47;02

Jason Redman

Way.

00;34;47;05 - 00;34;49;17

Jason Redman

That creates issues. And that's where.

00;34;49;19 - 00;34;50;03

Jason Redman

That.

00;34;50;03 - 00;35;01;02

Jason Redman

Rift starts to happen. So there isn't training. You're not figuring out how to change over time. You know, goals are changing and kids are coming along. Money situations are changing. Maybe you're moving whatever it is.

00;35;01;05 - 00;35;02;20

Jason Redman

And now if you're not doing.

00;35;02;20 - 00;35;03;25

Jason Redman

That and you know.

00;35;03;25 - 00;35;14;27

Jason Redman

The protector is putting more and more time into his work and less and less time into his most important teammate, it reaches that that collision point that we've all seen out.

00;35;14;27 - 00;35;16;20

Jason Redman

There, that point where.

00;35;16;20 - 00;35;18;16

Jason Redman

Hey, it's either me or the job.

00;35;18;18 - 00;35;20;17

Jason Redman

And and you know.

00;35;20;17 - 00;35;23;12

Jason Redman

This this is statistics show and, protect your.

00;35;23;12 - 00;35;25;21

Jason Redman

Community 70% of the time or greater.

00;35;25;24 - 00;35;28;01

Jason Redman

Guy or gal chooses the job.

00;35;28;03 - 00;35;28;23

Jason Redman

So and it shouldn't.

00;35;28;23 - 00;35;31;05

Jason Redman

Be that way. It should be,

00;35;31;07 - 00;35;33;15

Jason Redman

If you're doing it right, if you're communicating.

00;35;33;15 - 00;35;35;15

Jason Redman

Right, if you're training through all this like.

00;35;35;15 - 00;35;39;25

Jason Redman

We did, yeah, you will navigate.

00;35;40;00 - 00;35;44;17

Jason Redman

The challenges, especially when you get to part three Under Fire.

00;35;44;19 - 00;35;46;22

Jason Redman

Yeah. Now you're in, the the, the.

00;35;46;22 - 00;35;49;25

Jason Redman

Bullets and bombs of life are going off. So what makes.

00;35;49;25 - 00;35;52;09

Jason Redman

The difference in fire? Police, military.

00;35;52;14 - 00;35;53;23

Jason Redman

When we're under fire?

00;35;53;23 - 00;35;54;29

Jason Redman

Mission and training.

00;35;55;02 - 00;35;55;13

Jason Redman

Training?

00;35;55;13 - 00;35;57;26

Pat McCalla

Yeah, yeah. So,

00;35;57;26 - 00;36;02;07

Pat McCalla

when you say under fire, what are some of those things that might happen in a couple's life that would be under fire?

00;36;02;18 - 00;36;08;06

Jason Redman

Oh, you name it, man. I mean, believe it or not, kids can be just having kids can set that off.

00;36;08;06 - 00;36;09;15

Jason Redman

Financial problems.

00;36;10;16 - 00;36;11;03

Pat McCalla

losing a

00;36;11;17 - 00;36;19;27

Jason Redman

Oh, 100% losing a job, even disagreements on maybe values were misaligned in the beginning. And now we're further along and we're.

00;36;19;27 - 00;36;20;21

Jason Redman

Starting to.

00;36;20;24 - 00;36;23;29

Jason Redman

to butt heads on those misaligned values.

00;36;24;02 - 00;36;24;27

Jason Redman

And,

00;36;24;29 - 00;36;31;28

Jason Redman

And that leads to the fighting. And the problem is, have you establish your rules of engagement? How do you fight, man? I've watched.

00;36;31;28 - 00;36;33;17

Jason Redman

Some friends who.

00;36;33;17 - 00;36;41;20

Jason Redman

Are brutal. Like, I'm like, oh my God, like that? Like,

00;36;41;22 - 00;36;48;23

Jason Redman

Horrendously cursing. I mean, verbally berating each other, bringing up every bad.

00;36;48;23 - 00;36;49;17

Jason Redman

Thing that's ever.

00;36;49;17 - 00;36;50;28

Jason Redman

Happened in their relationship.

00;36;50;28 - 00;36;52;04

Jason Redman

And the fight. I call.

00;36;52;04 - 00;36;52;28

Jason Redman

That,

00;36;53;00 - 00;36;56;01

Jason Redman

Blue on blue. You're shooting your spouse.

00;36;56;04 - 00;36;57;25

Jason Redman

Like, intentionally. Like I want to.

00;36;57;25 - 00;36;59;11

Jason Redman

Hurt you in this argument.

00;36;59;13 - 00;37;03;03

Jason Redman

And that makes no sense to me. I mean, we don't shoot each other in training.

00;37;03;03 - 00;37;05;15

Jason Redman

Why are you doing it to your spouse?

00;37;05;22 - 00;37;09;02

Pat McCalla

You know, I'm I'm I'm quite. You probably look at my face going

00;37;09;02 - 00;37;11;15

Jason Redman

like, is he with me right now? I'm thinking

00;37;37;21 - 00;37;38;14

Jason Redman

Yeah.

00;37;45;26 - 00;37;47;06

Jason Redman

with someone who is truly a team member.

00;37;47;11 - 00;37;48;01

Jason Redman

That's right.

00;37;48;12 - 00;37;49;23

Jason Redman

And it is amazing.

00;37;49;23 - 00;37;51;19

Jason Redman

How we do it with.

00;37;51;21 - 00;37;53;12

Jason Redman

And that's just pure training.

00;37;53;15 - 00;37;55;02

Jason Redman

That's all that is. You didn't.

00;37;55;02 - 00;37;56;04

Jason Redman

Lay out what are.

00;37;56;04 - 00;37;57;07

Jason Redman

Our rules? Engagement.

00;37;57;07 - 00;37;58;21

Jason Redman

How do we how do we.

00;37;58;21 - 00;38;00;09

Jason Redman

Agree this is how we're going to fight.

00;38;00;17 - 00;38;11;11

Pat McCalla

The beautiful thing about that, I'm going to read a quote that you have in the Trident here. the beautiful thing about that is it doesn't matter how long some could be married for 15 years, and maybe they've been training poorly for 15 years,

00;38;11;15 - 00;38;12;16

Jason Redman

Yes.

00;38;23;04 - 00;38;26;00

Jason Redman

That's right. Fighting every every.

00;38;26;02 - 00;38;26;13

Jason Redman

All of.

00;38;26;13 - 00;38;26;27

Jason Redman

Us.

00;38;26;29 - 00;38;30;07

Jason Redman

Eric and I, we got into a Friday night. Yeah.

00;38;30;07 - 00;38;30;27

Pat McCalla

Yeah.

00;38;30;27 - 00;38;33;15

Pat McCalla

Yeah, it's just part of it's part of relationships.

00;38;33;24 - 00;38;34;23

Jason Redman

Yeah. 100%.

00;38;34;29 - 00;38;35;21

Jason Redman

Healthy.

00;38;35;23 - 00;38;36;13

Jason Redman

That's right.

00;38;59;04 - 00;39;00;05

Jason Redman

Yeah,

00;39;10;21 - 00;39;11;20

Jason Redman

It's never too late.

00;39;11;26 - 00;39;13;14

Jason Redman

That's something I try and tell people.

00;39;13;14 - 00;39;13;26

Jason Redman

I.

00;39;13;26 - 00;39;15;12

Jason Redman

I those are lies.

00;39;15;12 - 00;39;28;09

Jason Redman

That will buy into as humans. we'll convince ourselves it's too late. I've. I've messed up too much. I'm broken too much. Whatever it is, you know, our marriage is too far gone to save.

00;39;28;09 - 00;39;36;03

Jason Redman

And if you. And maybe it is. You know, I don't want to sugarcoat and and give people false hope.

00;39;36;03 - 00;39;41;21

Jason Redman

But I also say, have you truly put in the work to try and change? And that's the difference. And that's where you can take.

00;39;41;21 - 00;39;44;26

Jason Redman

People and and if they're willing to.

00;39;44;26 - 00;39;47;03

Jason Redman

Put in the work, man, and you train differently.

00;39;47;03 - 00;39;49;13

Jason Redman

Not not doing the same thing you've been doing, you.

00;39;49;13 - 00;39;49;21

Jason Redman

Know.

00;39;49;23 - 00;39;53;11

Jason Redman

Forever. Because obviously you haven't got the results you, you are hoping to.

00;39;53;11 - 00;39;56;05

Jason Redman

Get then then yeah, man.

00;39;56;06 - 00;39;57;23

Jason Redman

There's opportunity there. Yeah.

00;39;58;00 - 00;40;03;24

Pat McCalla

And I don't want to miss I don't want our audience to miss what you just said. That's a great point. You got it. You got to change up your training. Then

00;40;03;24 - 00;40;04;12

Jason Redman

Yeah. If you're

00;40;09;06 - 00;40;12;28

Jason Redman

Been doing, which comes full circle back to Jason Redman.

00;40;12;28 - 00;40;21;13

Jason Redman

Sitting on the ax, drinking himself silly and pushing everybody away. What I was trying to do by myself was not working. And when Erica.

00;40;21;13 - 00;40;24;20

Jason Redman

Called me out and said, you need to go get some help, I needed.

00;40;24;20 - 00;40;28;21

Jason Redman

A different training method because what I was doing did.

00;40;28;21 - 00;40;29;05

Jason Redman

Not work.

00;40;29;05 - 00;40;30;01

Jason Redman

Is it painful,

00;40;30;01 - 00;40;32;19

Pat McCalla

a painful training method that you have, or was it freeing?

00;40;32;20 - 00;40;41;05

Pat McCalla

were going this direction, and it wasn't working. And, Erica came and said, hey, you got to get off the ax. You got to do something. Was it freeing or was it painful in the beginning?

00;40;41;11 - 00;40;44;17

Jason Redman

I think it was. It was painful in the beginning. I mean, it's hard to talk.

00;40;44;17 - 00;40;46;19

Jason Redman

About,

00;40;46;21 - 00;40;48;14

Jason Redman

Our failures, problems, trauma.

00;40;48;14 - 00;40;49;16

Jason Redman

Things we don't want to talk.

00;40;49;16 - 00;40;50;23

Jason Redman

About, you know? I mean.

00;40;50;23 - 00;40;54;08

Jason Redman

That's why we boxed them up and put them our mind because we don't want to talk.

00;40;54;08 - 00;40;55;08

Jason Redman

About them.

00;40;55;10 - 00;41;07;22

Jason Redman

and oftentimes, you know, peeling back trauma, they're the problem with trauma is usually it's not just trauma. We've seen that we're not connected to.

00;41;07;22 - 00;41;08;28

Jason Redman

In any way.

00;41;09;00 - 00;41;11;16

Jason Redman

The problem is, we have a tendency as humans.

00;41;11;16 - 00;41;14;11

Jason Redman

To connect ourselves to it somehow.

00;41;14;13 - 00;41;15;13

Jason Redman

even in a car.

00;41;15;13 - 00;41;17;29

Jason Redman

Accident where a baby's ejection from the car, where a.

00;41;17;29 - 00;41;19;29

Jason Redman

Fire, you know, an.

00;41;19;29 - 00;41;20;20

Jason Redman

EMT.

00;41;20;20 - 00;41;22;10

Jason Redman

Or police, it shows up on.

00;41;22;10 - 00;41;25;24

Jason Redman

That scene had nothing to do with that will somehow walk.

00;41;25;24 - 00;41;28;15

Jason Redman

Away and be guilty. Like, I.

00;41;28;15 - 00;41;29;22

Jason Redman

Saw that car pass.

00;41;29;22 - 00;41;30;23

Jason Redman

Me and they were.

00;41;30;23 - 00;41;32;25

Jason Redman

Speeding and I could have pulled them.

00;41;32;25 - 00;41;33;11

Jason Redman

Over, but I.

00;41;33;11 - 00;41;42;18

Jason Redman

Didn't because I saw this other thing. So yeah, something that happened ten minutes prior that may or not had any outcome on that. Suddenly that guy's carrying that guilt.

00;41;42;18 - 00;41;44;11

Jason Redman

And that that baby.

00;41;44;11 - 00;41;47;02

Jason Redman

That was killed in this accident is my fault.

00;41;47;05 - 00;41;52;00

Jason Redman

It's amazing how we do that. So when we start having to talk about those.

00;41;52;00 - 00;41;57;21

Jason Redman

Things, we start after we have to start admitting those things and like, and and that's hard. We we as.

00;41;57;21 - 00;41;59;05

Jason Redman

Humans.

00;41;59;07 - 00;42;01;12

Jason Redman

we don't we don't want to talk about that.

00;42;01;15 - 00;42;03;02

Jason Redman

So yeah, it was hard.

00;42;03;02 - 00;42;04;28

Jason Redman

To navigate through some of that.

00;42;05;01 - 00;42;07;29

Jason Redman

some of it also was not just speaking about things.

00;42;07;29 - 00;42;16;20

Jason Redman

I also started exploring other modalities. I did something called stellar ganglion block, which is a,

00;42;16;22 - 00;42;17;27

Jason Redman

It's,

00;42;17;29 - 00;42;18;17

Jason Redman

Shot.

00;42;18;18 - 00;42;19;04

Jason Redman

That they.

00;42;19;04 - 00;42;20;10

Jason Redman

Use that.

00;42;20;12 - 00;42;21;09

Jason Redman

They kind of describe.

00;42;21;09 - 00;42;27;00

Jason Redman

It as like, like a little bit of a reboot of the brain. They use it for trauma.

00;42;27;03 - 00;42;29;13

Jason Redman

that helped me tremendously.

00;42;29;15 - 00;42;35;08

Jason Redman

I think talking about it between the psychol, the, our psych and also some of the counselors.

00;42;35;11 - 00;42;38;27

Jason Redman

For me, it was a one time thing. Some guys have done it more. I know that.

00;42;39;04 - 00;42;41;20

Jason Redman

Dakota Meyer is a big fan of Stella ganglion.

00;42;41;20 - 00;42;42;18

Jason Redman

Block.

00;42;42;18 - 00;42;45;26

Pat McCalla

restart the brain a little bit or help create new pathways or

00;42;45;26 - 00;42;51;21

Jason Redman

Yeah, it's it's kind of I can't explain physiologically they do this shot into your cell a.

00;42;51;21 - 00;42;58;08

Jason Redman

Ganglion nerve which is the main nerve in your neck that goes up into your brain. It branched off into three. And they do this shot.

00;42;58;10 - 00;42;59;17

Jason Redman

And and.

00;42;59;17 - 00;42;59;28

Jason Redman

It's kind of.

00;42;59;28 - 00;43;07;15

Jason Redman

Weird when they do it because you get this warm, numbing and actually your face kind of goes numb. So it almost looks like you've had a stroke.

00;43;07;17 - 00;43;08;19

Jason Redman

But that only lasts.

00;43;08;19 - 00;43;09;03

Jason Redman

For.

00;43;09;03 - 00;43;16;03

Jason Redman

Maybe half a day. but it, it, it they.

00;43;16;03 - 00;43;17;27

Jason Redman

They came up with this.

00;43;17;29 - 00;43;31;26

Jason Redman

Some doctor figured this out in the 60s with, some, some women who had suffered severe sexual trauma. And I could be wrong if anybody's out there. Correct me. but that's kind of what I remember. And then it got brought.

00;43;31;26 - 00;43;32;28

Jason Redman

Back by.

00;43;32;28 - 00;43;34;16

Jason Redman

A seal.

00;43;34;18 - 00;43;36;18

Jason Redman

doctor who was a seal or a.

00;43;36;19 - 00;43;37;15

Jason Redman

Seal who became a.

00;43;37;15 - 00;43;42;12

Jason Redman

Doctor, and I think an Army doc, because they had read this and they said, could this work in.

00;43;42;15 - 00;43;43;04

Jason Redman

Our.

00;43;43;06 - 00;43;49;02

Jason Redman

Veteran community coming back with all this trauma? So they they got real big into it. And I know there's a lot of guys, but.

00;43;49;02 - 00;43;49;28

Jason Redman

What I always tell every.

00;43;49;28 - 00;43;52;03

Jason Redman

Guy is,

00;43;52;03 - 00;43;53;22

Jason Redman

what work for me may not.

00;43;53;22 - 00;43;54;14

Jason Redman

Work for you.

00;43;54;14 - 00;43;56;18

Jason Redman

And this is frustrating to me. I can't tell you how.

00;43;56;18 - 00;44;00;14

Jason Redman

Many guys I, me or gals who are dealing with trauma.

00;44;00;16 - 00;44;01;09

Jason Redman

That they'll.

00;44;01;09 - 00;44;04;23

Jason Redman

Try one thing and it doesn't work, and then they'll.

00;44;04;23 - 00;44;09;11

Jason Redman

Be like, it didn't work. So then they go back to self-medicate and sit right back on that ax.

00;44;09;11 - 00;44;14;21

Jason Redman

And I'm like, listen. And once again, all my stuff has special.

00;44;14;21 - 00;44;15;07

Jason Redman

Operations.

00;44;15;07 - 00;44;23;11

Jason Redman

Analogies because that's the world I grew up in. But listen, fire, police and military, you're going to understand this analogy. If you have to breach a.

00;44;23;11 - 00;44;24;03

Jason Redman

Door,

00;44;24;03 - 00;44;25;24

Jason Redman

you don't give it one try.

00;44;26;00 - 00;44;41;10

Jason Redman

And you don't get in the door and turn around to the team. Be like a failed bridge. Sorry. We're done. let's go home, guys. Hey. Sorry. People stuck inside. We're out. Fail bridge. Man. You you you come up with plan A and plan B and plan C and plan D, like you will get.

00;44;41;10 - 00;44;42;22

Jason Redman

In there for us. I mean.

00;44;42;22 - 00;44;44;10

Jason Redman

We have extensive.

00;44;44;10 - 00;44;49;04

Jason Redman

Breaching scenarios that we do where, you know, some of our advanced breaches.

00;44;49;07 - 00;44;50;10

Jason Redman

You know, it may be a.

00;44;50;10 - 00;44;50;29

Jason Redman

2 or 3.

00;44;50;29 - 00;44;55;16

Jason Redman

Hour breaching problem. They're dealing with, and they have to get super.

00;44;55;16 - 00;44;58;06

Jason Redman

Creative on everything they can do to get in that.

00;44;58;06 - 00;45;01;08

Jason Redman

Building, especially if it's like some sort of hardened structure.

00;45;01;10 - 00;45;11;09

Jason Redman

Well, why should that be any different? You know, none of us go on a mission and suddenly one thing goes wrong. We're like, oh, that didn't work. Like, yeah, you got to figure out what are the tools we can use.

00;45;11;09 - 00;45;16;04

Jason Redman

And, and there's a lot of different modalities out there that I know guys.

00;45;16;04 - 00;45;17;08

Jason Redman

I mean, I've tried.

00;45;17;08 - 00;45;19;11

Jason Redman

A lot of them.

00;45;19;13 - 00;45;20;23

Jason Redman

There's one called.

00;45;20;25 - 00;45;21;17

Jason Redman

magnetic.

00;45;21;17 - 00;45;23;16

Jason Redman

Resonance therapy where they.

00;45;23;18 - 00;45;24;09

Jason Redman

Pulse.

00;45;24;11 - 00;45;25;09

Jason Redman

Kind of.

00;45;25;11 - 00;45;26;02

Jason Redman

waves.

00;45;26;02 - 00;45;26;26

Jason Redman

Through your brain.

00;45;26;26 - 00;45;28;02

Jason Redman

And then they have.

00;45;28;05 - 00;45;30;29

Jason Redman

Doctors have looked at our brain, operate.

00;45;30;29 - 00;45;32;29

Jason Redman

Off different wavelengths when we're alpha.

00;45;32;29 - 00;45;38;04

Jason Redman

Beta, theta, gamma. and what.

00;45;38;05 - 00;45;39;16

Jason Redman

Doctors have come to find is.

00;45;39;16 - 00;45;49;09

Jason Redman

Individuals that have been through a lot of trauma and are struggling. Their brainwaves are not shaped like they they should be in sync and they're totally out of sync, which causes sleep problems, all kinds of different things.

00;45;49;11 - 00;45;51;03

Jason Redman

So they've they've figured out with.

00;45;51;03 - 00;45;53;17

Jason Redman

This magnetic resonance therapy that.

00;45;53;19 - 00;45;53;28

Jason Redman

by.

00;45;53;28 - 00;45;57;02

Jason Redman

Doing this, you know, and it's, it's like 30 days that every day.

00;45;57;02 - 00;45;57;17

Jason Redman

You're going in.

00;45;57;17 - 00;46;00;02

Jason Redman

And you're in like 30 minutes of brain zapping.

00;46;00;04 - 00;46;01;02

Jason Redman

And,

00;46;01;05 - 00;46;07;29

Jason Redman

And for some people, it realigns their brainwave activity. I know, guys that it was life changing.

00;46;08;06 - 00;46;10;20

Jason Redman

Like literally left there and we're like, oh my.

00;46;10;20 - 00;46;16;19

Jason Redman

God. Like I am thinking clear again. I'm sleeping. I did it for 30 days and I didn't feel like it did anything for me.

00;46;16;21 - 00;46;17;18

Jason Redman

So but

00;46;17;18 - 00;46;21;00

Pat McCalla

you bring up a great point, then you just keep trying. Try something

00;46;21;00 - 00;46;21;08

Jason Redman

else.

00;46;21;13 - 00;46;24;21

Jason Redman

That's right. You owe it to yourself, man. You owe it to yourself.

00;46;24;22 - 00;46;39;27

Pat McCalla

Well, so another quote that's in the book that I loved you said, and this was in the context of, in our last interview together. I asked you that had to be the worst day of your life when you got shot in the head and you're like, no, actually, it wasn't the worst day. And then you talked about it was.

00;46;39;27 - 00;46;56;28

Pat McCalla

It was your failure as a leader was your worst day. And this was in the context that you said, I realized in that moment that I had been my own worst enemy. I had been so focused on being the toughest seal and impressing everyone that I lost sight of what it truly meant to be a leader. Just a great line there.

00;46;57;00 - 00;47;13;06

Pat McCalla

I had been my own worst enemy. First of all, just for you to come to the point where you admitted that, right? Because I think that's true of a lot of us at some time in our life, probably every human at some point in their life, they were actually their own worst enemy. But you came to the point where you actually recognized that and admitted it.

00;47;13;09 - 00;47;15;26

Pat McCalla

And then it was a painful journey to get out of that. Right.

00;47;15;26 - 00;47;17;14

Jason Redman

Yeah, I want.

00;47;18;06 - 00;47;20;08

Jason Redman

I mean, I would say that was at least a six.

00;47;20;08 - 00;47;26;23

Jason Redman

Month journey for me. and that probably took a year and a half to show the guys to.

00;47;26;23 - 00;47;27;27

Jason Redman

Fulfill the, the.

00;47;27;27 - 00;47;39;18

Jason Redman

Vince Peterson quote. People will follow you if you give them a reason to like, nobody was jumping on board just because Jason Redmond said, I'm going to make a change. And I think that's where people sometimes struggle. You know, they're.

00;47;39;18 - 00;47;41;24

Jason Redman

Like, hey, I've changed.

00;47;41;27 - 00;47;49;21

Jason Redman

But if there isn't sustained performance over time where you show you are different and successful and like people have a reason to follow you.

00;47;49;23 - 00;47;51;08

Jason Redman

That's going to take time.

00;47;52;14 - 00;47;59;03

Jason Redman

So I think the other thing with that is we often are our own worst.

00;47;59;03 - 00;48;01;11

Jason Redman

Enemies because we don't,

00;48;01;13 - 00;48;02;18

Jason Redman

It's easy to look.

00;48;02;18 - 00;48;04;29

Jason Redman

At the good things we're doing in our life.

00;48;04;29 - 00;48;06;11

Jason Redman

And over.

00;48;06;11 - 00;48;06;29

Jason Redman

Inflate.

00;48;06;29 - 00;48;09;06

Jason Redman

How great we are and ignore the.

00;48;09;06 - 00;48;10;19

Jason Redman

Negative things.

00;48;10;22 - 00;48;14;27

Jason Redman

And, just proven that that's true. Oh, yeah. Most of us,

00;48;14;27 - 00;48;21;04

Pat McCalla

inflate the good things about ourselves and ignore the negative things.

00;48;21;04 - 00;48;26;27

Jason Redman

Yeah. So there and there's a disconnect oftentimes. And the problem is I think there's a disconnect.

00;48;26;29 - 00;48;28;08

Jason Redman

Where.

00;48;28;11 - 00;48;28;28

Jason Redman

I think with.

00;48;28;28 - 00;48;30;07

Jason Redman

Bad leaders or.

00;48;30;08 - 00;48;34;00

Jason Redman

Maybe.

00;48;34;02 - 00;48;34;23

Jason Redman

how you view.

00;48;34;23 - 00;48;37;05

Jason Redman

Yourself is drastically different from how other.

00;48;37;05 - 00;48;40;19

Jason Redman

People view you. And and that was definitely my problem.

00;48;40;28 - 00;48;52;08

Pat McCalla

here's the tough thing, right, Jason, is if you're in a leadership position, you're not hearing from very many people either. Like if you're a leader, you have power now, and those that are underneath you are there's going to be very few, if any, that will be honest with

00;48;52;08 - 00;48;53;04

Jason Redman

Yeah.

00;49;02;20 - 00;49;03;23

Jason Redman

Yep.

00;49;03;23 - 00;49;07;18

Pat McCalla

you were hearing less but then but but then it came to it

00;49;07;20 - 00;49;11;03

Jason Redman

Well, I was hearing some, because I wasn't high enough.

00;49;11;03 - 00;49;12;08

Jason Redman

In leadership yet.

00;49;12;08 - 00;49;13;19

Jason Redman

I just was ignoring it.

00;49;13;19 - 00;49;16;03

Jason Redman

And the problem was one of the main people.

00;49;16;03 - 00;49;20;15

Jason Redman

Who was bringing it to me was a guy, you know, my my platoon senior chief.

00;49;20;17 - 00;49;23;03

Jason Redman

Which that's really the role.

00;49;23;06 - 00;49;24;01

Jason Redman

in a in.

00;49;24;01 - 00;49;25;27

Jason Redman

A platoon, the senior enlisted.

00;49;25;27 - 00;49;27;19

Jason Redman

Member, one of their jobs is to.

00;49;27;19 - 00;49;31;20

Jason Redman

Groom and help grow the, the the junior.

00;49;31;20 - 00;49;32;18

Jason Redman

Officer.

00;49;33;24 - 00;49;37;27

Jason Redman

And there were several problems there.

00;49;38;00 - 00;49;41;04

Jason Redman

he.

00;49;41;07 - 00;49;42;22

Jason Redman

Was a very forward leaning.

00;49;42;23 - 00;49;43;28

Jason Redman

Kind of over the top.

00;49;43;28 - 00;49;45;03

Jason Redman

You know, my way or the.

00;49;45;03 - 00;49;46;13

Jason Redman

Highway type guy.

00;49;46;15 - 00;49;47;29

Jason Redman

Very good seal.

00;49;48;02 - 00;49;48;16

Jason Redman

Very good.

00;49;48;16 - 00;49;51;27

Jason Redman

She'll but had a tendency to.

00;49;51;27 - 00;49;55;18

Jason Redman

Really rub people the wrong way with the way he led and did things.

00;49;55;21 - 00;49;56;12

Jason Redman

And.

00;49;56;15 - 00;49;57;02

Jason Redman

He and I did.

00;49;57;02 - 00;50;00;28

Jason Redman

Not get along. I sure. And and I.

00;50;00;28 - 00;50;12;00

Jason Redman

Over inflated my prior enlisted experience and was like, hey, I don't need to listen to you. I already know how to do these things. You know, I've been in almost as long as you have.

00;50;12;02 - 00;50;14;00

Jason Redman

So he would come to me.

00;50;14;00 - 00;50;15;01

Jason Redman

And and.

00;50;15;01 - 00;50;16;00

Jason Redman

Try and tell.

00;50;16;00 - 00;50;34;07

Jason Redman

Me things, but unfortunately his he was neither diplomat or tactful and the way he would do it. So instead of listening, I'd just be like, screw you. You know, you and I don't get along. You know, the way you're delivering this I'm not even going to listen to. And it's funny, after I got in trouble, I looked back, you know, and I said.

00;50;34;09 - 00;50;34;28

Jason Redman

Yeah.

00;50;35;01 - 00;50;38;26

Jason Redman

Like that guy told me things that I should have listened to. Yeah.

00;50;38;26 - 00;51;03;18

Pat McCalla

Well, one more quote I want to read here and just have you speak into it a little bit, because I love the word that you used in it. You said the day I took full responsibility for my actions was the day my life changed. Accountability isn't a burden. That's the part that stuck out to me, because I think most of us as human beings, from the time we were little kids, right when we were little kids, almost all of us were like, I can't wait till I'm an adult and no one can tell me what to eat, or no one can tell

00;51;03;18 - 00;51;04;02

Jason Redman

me what time.

00;51;04;02 - 00;51;08;05

Jason Redman

To go to bed. Stay young forever. Adulting sucks.

00;51;17;28 - 00;51;19;03

Jason Redman

yeah.

00;51;34;15 - 00;51;35;23

Jason Redman

Yeah.

00;51;38;08 - 00;51;43;09

Jason Redman

Oh good God, I mean, that opens a whole band. I mean you look at the world

00;51;43;09 - 00;51;43;27

Jason Redman

We're living in

00;51;43;27 - 00;51;48;00

Jason Redman

Today where there is almost no accountability I mean we've reduced

00;51;48;00 - 00;51;50;05

Jason Redman

Accountability in

00;51;50;07 - 00;51;54;04

Jason Redman

Our cities enforcing laws We're telling people who

00;51;54;04 - 00;51;56;11

Jason Redman

Are burning down cities or looting

00;51;56;11 - 00;51;57;15

Jason Redman

Like hey.

00;51;57;17 - 00;52;01;09

Jason Redman

It's okay because they're just expressing their their opinion

00;52;01;09 - 00;52;03;18

Jason Redman

No you're not you're breaking the law

00;52;03;18 - 00;52;04;09

Jason Redman

and we're.

00;52;04;12 - 00;52;06;23

Jason Redman

We're telling kids like hey you don't

00;52;06;23 - 00;52;16;04

Jason Redman

Have to get good grades because it's unfair to play standards on you because if little Johnny doesn't do as well as Little.

00;52;16;04 - 00;52;16;29

Jason Redman

Jimmy.

00;52;17;01 - 00;52;21;03

Jason Redman

Then that's just not fair. So we're not going to enforce grades.

00;52;21;03 - 00;52;21;29

Jason Redman

The Protector

00;52;22;06 - 00;52;26;19

Jason Redman

Yeah Participation Hey, you know, little Jill is an amazing soccer.

00;52;26;19 - 00;52;28;14

Jason Redman

Player, and Suzy is not that.

00;52;28;14 - 00;52;30;01

Jason Redman

Great, but we.

00;52;30;01 - 00;52;32;14

Jason Redman

Want to give you both the same award, so we're not.

00;52;32;14 - 00;52;33;12

Jason Redman

You know,

00;52;33;12 - 00;52;34;16

Jason Redman

I mean, look at.

00;52;34;18 - 00;52;37;29

Jason Redman

accountability and, protect your community. It's something I brought up yesterday, and.

00;52;37;29 - 00;52;42;02

Jason Redman

Thankfully, it was received. Well, I talked about.

00;52;42;04 - 00;52;43;29

Jason Redman

The the.

00;52;44;02 - 00;52;45;27

Jason Redman

Lack of enforcement and standards.

00;52;45;27 - 00;52;49;10

Jason Redman

And physical ability and then protect your community. That's really I'm seeing.

00;52;49;10 - 00;52;51;08

Jason Redman

More and more,

00;52;51;10 - 00;52;56;00

Jason Redman

Less so in the military, thank God. But I am seeing it and I see it a lot.

00;52;56;00 - 00;52;59;18

Jason Redman

And fire and law enforcement, I see it in the leadership.

00;52;59;20 - 00;53;00;07

Jason Redman

And

00;53;00;15 - 00;53;21;24

Jason Redman

And I asked them that yesterday, I said, you know, hey, guys, you in a leadership position, if you still are in active duty, fire or law enforcement officer and something was to go wrong, it is your duty. You are required by law to step in and help. And for those of you who don't have the physical ability, it could potentially cost you your life.

00;53;21;24 - 00;53;26;02

Jason Redman

Even worse, it could cost the life of the people who you're supposed to protect and serve. And the biggest.

00;53;26;02 - 00;53;32;01

Jason Redman

Thing that I would say is, is I would have issues with someone who's depending on you.

00;53;32;01 - 00;53;39;22

Jason Redman

Some young kid reporting to something that now you're their back up and you're so out of standards that it ends up costing.

00;53;39;22 - 00;53;40;27

Jason Redman

Them their lives.

00;53;41;00 - 00;53;54;15

Jason Redman

That's dangerous. And that's this failure of lack of accountability that's happening. people don't want to. Yeah. I mean, look at, I mean, it goes even further, like we're now saying that obesity is

00;53;54;15 - 00;53;57;17

Jason Redman

Discrimination to say someone's obese, it's discrimination.

00;53;57;25 - 00;53;59;10

Jason Redman

That's madness

00;54;00;20 - 00;54;17;05

Jason Redman

Obesity is science It's not discrimination You are above the normal weight you should be And it is unhealthy It is absolutely unhealthy. if you choose to live your life that way that's fine And I know that a lot of

00;54;17;05 - 00;54;18;12

Jason Redman

People out there struggle

00;54;18;12 - 00;54;21;00

Jason Redman

With their weight

00;54;21;02 - 00;54;22;13

Jason Redman

But once again

00;54;22;16 - 00;54;23;27

Jason Redman

It comes back to training

00;54;24;01 - 00;54;38;09

Jason Redman

If you tried one thing and it didn't work then you can't just give up You know what works for one person to lose weight isn't going to work for another So yeah it's this maddening world we're living in where people we're telling people you don't have

00;54;38;09 - 00;54;43;20

Jason Redman

To take accountability for your actions We just want to accept you as you are

00;54;43;22 - 00;54;44;24

Jason Redman

yeah. If I do

00;54;44;24 - 00;54;51;28

Pat McCalla

very next line in that quote, by the way, I didn't even finish it is you actually say that that accountability is a foundation for growth,

00;54;51;28 - 00;54;55;28

Jason Redman

I and I would agree with.

00;54;56;01 - 00;55;00;24

Jason Redman

I think we have a lot of growing to do as a nation And what's fascinating to me is people.

00;55;00;24 - 00;55;02;22

Jason Redman

people are amazed at individuals.

00;55;02;22 - 00;55;06;04

Jason Redman

That take accountability for their actions and admit, man, I really screwed that.

00;55;06;04 - 00;55;06;12

Jason Redman

Up.

00;55;06;12 - 00;55;07;14

Jason Redman

And like, people are.

00;55;07;14 - 00;55;08;08

Jason Redman

Afraid to do that.

00;55;08;12 - 00;55;15;18

Jason Redman

And I love, I love when people read.

00;55;15;18 - 00;55;19;26

Jason Redman

The tri to and they say, oh my God, that that was not what I expected.

00;55;19;26 - 00;55;20;23

Jason Redman

Because it is.

00;55;20;23 - 00;55;23;08

Jason Redman

Not your standard military book.

00;55;23;08 - 00;55;24;08

Jason Redman

It's true.

00;55;24;11 - 00;55;25;29

Jason Redman

Yeah, I was,

00;55;26;03 - 00;55;27;11

Pat McCalla

And you actually even warned me.

00;55;27;11 - 00;55;29;17

Jason Redman

I read it before our first interview,

00;55;32;27 - 00;55;38;00

Jason Redman

And I have I have friends and, you know, the military, there's a running joke.

00;55;38;00 - 00;55;44;05

Jason Redman

Now, every child out there has written a book, you know, and and there's a formula for a seal book.

00;55;44;06 - 00;55;47;08

Jason Redman

You know, write about bods and how tough bods was.

00;55;47;09 - 00;55;47;16

Jason Redman

And.

00;55;47;16 - 00;55;48;19

Jason Redman

Then write about how awesome.

00;55;48;19 - 00;55;52;16

Jason Redman

You were in combat. Like, that's the formula for the seal book. So people are like.

00;55;52;16 - 00;55;52;27

Jason Redman

You know.

00;55;52;27 - 00;55;54;17

Jason Redman

Oh, I guess that's your book, too. And I was.

00;55;54;17 - 00;55;58;05

Jason Redman

Like, no, it's not so much my book. Yeah, my books about

00;55;58;13 - 00;55;59;08

Jason Redman

up.

00;55;59;11 - 00;56;02;04

Jason Redman

And then growing up about. Yeah, yeah.

00;56;02;04 - 00;56;02;15

Pat McCalla

Yeah.

00;56;02;20 - 00;56;04;16

Jason Redman

And it's amazing to me, though, how many.

00;56;04;16 - 00;56;13;22

Jason Redman

People are, shocked by that and uncomfortable by that. And, and I will admit.

00;56;13;25 - 00;56;16;15

Jason Redman

When I put the back out there, I was a little nervous.

00;56;16;17 - 00;56;17;20

Jason Redman

Like, wow, I'm really.

00;56;17;20 - 00;56;18;20

Jason Redman

Laying myself out.

00;56;18;20 - 00;56;20;11

Jason Redman

Here. But the other thing was.

00;56;20;11 - 00;56;22;27

Jason Redman

I was like, but I did these things.

00;56;22;29 - 00;56;24;20

Jason Redman

These were the mistakes I made.

00;56;24;22 - 00;56;25;11

Jason Redman

And I.

00;56;25;12 - 00;56;26;04

Jason Redman

Truly.

00;56;26;04 - 00;56;27;25

Jason Redman

And I knew.

00;56;27;27 - 00;56;34;03

Jason Redman

having served, you know, 15 years operationally, that every other amazing elite.

00;56;34;03 - 00;56;34;19

Jason Redman

Warrior that.

00;56;34;19 - 00;56;35;20

Jason Redman

I work with.

00;56;35;23 - 00;56;36;15

Jason Redman

Maybe not all of.

00;56;36;15 - 00;56;41;05

Jason Redman

Them had made mistakes to my level, but they had made mistakes. That's part of being human.

00;56;41;07 - 00;56;43;05

Jason Redman

And I knew that people could look at that.

00;56;43;05 - 00;56;44;26

Jason Redman

Some who are willing to humble.

00;56;44;26 - 00;56;52;14

Jason Redman

Themselves and take accountability for themselves could also grow from somebody else saying, hey, I screwed these things up and I grew up and figured it out.

00;56;52;17 - 00;57;05;06

Pat McCalla

was such an important message. And I think it's probably one of one of the most important things that we do as parents train our kids. Everyone makes mistakes. Everyone will. When you do admit it, deal with it and move on.

00;57;05;06 - 00;57;05;26

Jason Redman

Yup,

00;57;08;25 - 00;57;09;13

Jason Redman

Yeah.

00;57;09;13 - 00;57;11;03

Jason Redman

Or try and cover it up and hide it.

00;57;11;07 - 00;57;11;26

Jason Redman

Yeah.

00;57;21;29 - 00;57;22;16

Jason Redman

you know.

00;57;38;20 - 00;57;39;12

Jason Redman

You can get it at.

00;57;39;29 - 00;57;42;29

Jason Redman

Almost all major bookstores. You can get it on Amazon.

00;57;42;29 - 00;57;43;22

Jason Redman

Although.

00;57;43;22 - 00;57;45;06

Jason Redman

If you buy it on Amazon.

00;57;45;11 - 00;57;50;04

Jason Redman

Jeff Bezos, Bezos does not sign it. So I just want to let everybody know that.

00;57;50;07 - 00;57;52;10

Jason Redman

But if you buy it on Jason Redmond.

00;57;52;10 - 00;57;53;11

Jason Redman

Dot com, I.

00;57;53;11 - 00;57;56;04

Jason Redman

Personally sign every book that we send out.

00;57;56;06 - 00;57;56;13

Jason Redman

Yeah.

00;57;56;15 - 00;57;56;18

Jason Redman

Go

00;57;56;18 - 00;58;00;08

Pat McCalla

to Jason redmond.com, because you got other cool stuff there too. You got shirts and

00;58;00;08 - 00;58;00;27

Jason Redman

Yeah.

00;58;08;19 - 00;58;10;00

Jason Redman

Yeah, February.

00;58;10;02 - 00;58;10;19

Jason Redman

Yeah.

00;58;12;28 - 00;58;16;29

Jason Redman

you know, there was there was somebody who is smarter than me.

00;58;17;01 - 00;58;19;12

Jason Redman

There's some strategy. They're good. But

00;58;32;19 - 00;58;38;06

Jason Redman

Yeah. No, nine over 11 is very, it was a very, very.

00;58;38;06 - 00;58;41;21

Jason Redman

Important date, I think for those of us in the military during that time frame.

00;58;41;21 - 00;58;43;04

Jason Redman

And I think

00;58;43;04 - 00;58;45;03

Jason Redman

I guess we were doing the math.

00;58;45;03 - 00;58;59;04

Jason Redman

I have a good friend of mine who's survived the towers falling He's one of the few firefighters who was in the impact zone where they. I think scientists said it was a 99% kill ratio And he survived

00;59;00;07 - 00;59;04;09

Jason Redman

And Tim and I were talking. He goes and speaks on 911 all the time

00;59;04;09 - 00;59;08;00

Jason Redman

And if you are.

00;59;08;02 - 00;59;09;06

Jason Redman

The military is comprised

00;59;09;06 - 00;59;15;05

Jason Redman

Of younger individuals you know the average age probably in the military is 18 to 22

00;59;15;07 - 00;59;17;02

Jason Redman

And, you know, many of them get out, they.

00;59;17;02 - 00;59;21;13

Jason Redman

Do one tours and that's it. Those individuals today know nothing

00;59;21;13 - 00;59;24;04

Jason Redman

About 911 the

00;59;24;04 - 00;59;27;09

Jason Redman

Single greatest attack that occurred on American

00;59;27;09 - 00;59;31;03

Jason Redman

Soil you know barring

00;59;31;06 - 00;59;38;04

Jason Redman

Pearl Harbor which 911. I obviously one was a military target. This was a, civilian target.

00;59;38;06 - 00;59;39;01

Jason Redman

And,

00;59;39;03 - 00;59;39;20

Jason Redman

So any.

00;59;39;20 - 00;59;40;19

Jason Redman

Of us who.

00;59;40;20 - 00;59;42;23

Jason Redman

Were there, I was in the military when.

00;59;42;23 - 00;59;45;02

Jason Redman

911 happened. I mean, I know.

00;59;45;02 - 00;59;47;09

Jason Redman

One who is, you know.

00;59;47;11 - 00;59;49;19

Jason Redman

Older, you know, of.

00;59;49;19 - 00;59;51;01

Jason Redman

Our age range

00;59;51;01 - 00;59;53;03

Jason Redman

does not remember that day.

00;59;53;03 - 00;59;53;24

Jason Redman

and it it.

00;59;53;24 - 00;59;59;11

Jason Redman

Fundamentally changed the military the military.

00;59;59;13 - 01;00;00;03

Jason Redman

The United.

01;00;00;03 - 01;00;00;12

Jason Redman

States.

01;00;00;12 - 01;00;01;22

Jason Redman

Military had not.

01;00;01;22 - 01;00;03;04

Jason Redman

Been in any kind.

01;00;03;04 - 01;00;08;02

Jason Redman

Of protracted war since Vietnam. There were skirmishes.

01;00;08;04 - 01;00;16;06

Jason Redman

we did, Grenada, Panama, Grenada, Bosnia. obviously,

01;00;16;11 - 01;00;17;27

Jason Redman

desert storm, desert storm.

01;00;17;27 - 01;00;18;22

Jason Redman

One,

01;00;18;22 - 01;00;24;08

Jason Redman

but no prolonged, combat. And it really.

01;00;24;08 - 01;00;28;05

Jason Redman

Wasn't on the radar. it's actually it's interesting. I'm reading a book right now.

01;00;28;05 - 01;00;28;22

Jason Redman

About.

01;00;28;26 - 01;00;29;27

Jason Redman

Afghanistan.

01;00;30;00 - 01;00;31;11

Jason Redman

And the the.

01;00;31;11 - 01;00;33;19

Jason Redman

War against the Soviets that led into the.

01;00;33;19 - 01;00;37;14

Jason Redman

Buildup of,

01;00;37;17 - 01;00;41;14

Jason Redman

Osama bin laden and al Qaeda and led to that terrorism.

01;00;41;14 - 01;00;44;25

Jason Redman

But yeah, I'll never forget that moment.

01;00;44;27 - 01;00;53;01

Jason Redman

I was I had just started school. I just been picked up for the commissioning program. Eric and I had just gotten married.

01;00;53;03 - 01;00;54;22

Jason Redman

and my, my.

01;00;54;25 - 01;01;03;21

Jason Redman

One of my best friends, Bobby Ramirez, was a fellow Seal team mate of mine that also had gotten picked up. We competed against each other.

01;01;03;21 - 01;01;04;23

Jason Redman

In the,

01;01;04;25 - 01;01;06;09

Jason Redman

Seaman admiral program.

01;01;06;09 - 01;01;07;20

Jason Redman

And.

01;01;07;22 - 01;01;08;19

Jason Redman

only 50.

01;01;08;19 - 01;01;10;02

Jason Redman

People in the Navy get picked.

01;01;10;02 - 01;01;15;21

Jason Redman

For this program. And the fact that we were both trying to get picked up from the same command and we were friends,

01;01;15;21 - 01;01;16;14

Jason Redman

created a lot of

01;01;16;23 - 01;01;17;14

Jason Redman

talking,

01;01;17;15 - 01;01;22;07

Jason Redman

like, hey, man, when I get picked up as an officer, I'll let you be, you know, one of the.

01;01;22;07 - 01;01;33;02

Jason Redman

Enlisted guys in my platoon. So there would be a lot of banter like that. So amazingly, both of us got picked up together, which was pretty cool. We got to go to school together. Our kids were about the same age, so.

01;01;33;04 - 01;01;33;23

Jason Redman

He and I hung.

01;01;33;23 - 01;01;34;08

Jason Redman

Out all the.

01;01;34;08 - 01;01;35;11

Jason Redman

Time.

01;01;35;13 - 01;01;40;19

Jason Redman

Erica and I and and and their kids would hang out.

01;01;40;21 - 01;01;45;09

Jason Redman

but, I remember that morning

01;01;45;12 - 01;01;47;29

Jason Redman

I left class I had my first class of the day at.

01;01;47;29 - 01;01;49;05

Jason Redman

Like, 8 a.m..

01;01;49;08 - 01;01;52;11

Jason Redman

And I left class, and I went to the student center to get a coffee

01;01;52;11 - 01;01;56;04

Jason Redman

To meet Bobby and, and I got

01;01;56;04 - 01;01;57;06

Jason Redman

My coffee and

01;01;57;06 - 01;02;03;20

Jason Redman

The kid behind the counter was like like, nervously laughing as he handed it to me You know, I was like.

01;02;03;28 - 01;02;04;16

Jason Redman

You're all right

01;02;04;16 - 01;02;07;24

Jason Redman

Man He's like the world's coming to an end

01;02;07;26 - 01;02;12;08

Jason Redman

And I was like, what's happening? And he said,

01;02;12;10 - 01;02;13;13

Jason Redman

A plane hit the

01;02;13;13 - 01;02;20;03

Jason Redman

World Trade Center and the Pentagon's on fire I was like okay that's weird So I went over to the

01;02;20;03 - 01;02;20;28

Jason Redman

TV

01;02;20;28 - 01;02;21;14

Jason Redman

And

01;02;21;14 - 01;02;29;17

Jason Redman

Started watching And, Bobby showed up a few minutes later and he and I were watching with all these other students. And then the second plane hit.

01;02;29;20 - 01;02;30;22

Jason Redman

And yeah we both

01;02;30;22 - 01;02;33;11

Jason Redman

Looked at each other and we're like this is intentional

01;02;33;11 - 01;02;35;16

Jason Redman

Like we're going to war

01;02;35;18 - 01;02;36;10

Jason Redman

So,

01;02;36;10 - 01;02;37;21

Jason Redman

I went home.

01;02;37;24 - 01;02;39;09

Jason Redman

obviously spent a lot of time with.

01;02;39;09 - 01;02;41;01

Jason Redman

Erica. And then.

01;02;41;02 - 01;02;43;22

Jason Redman

A couple days later I went to.

01;02;44;15 - 01;02;58;11

Jason Redman

Back to my old Seal team and Vince Peterson, who I talked about, who gave me that greatest advice, was the CEO there. And, and I said hey I want out of this program. I said, I don't want to be in this commissioning program. I know you guys are going to war

01;02;58;11 - 01;03;01;29

Jason Redman

Like I want to go And, and he.

01;03;02;02 - 01;03;05;14

Jason Redman

One of the more prophetic things I've seen in many, many years.

01;03;05;14 - 01;03;06;16

Jason Redman

He.

01;03;06;19 - 01;03;19;25

Jason Redman

th,:

01;03;19;25 - 01;03;21;06

Pat McCalla

Wow.

01;03;21;06 - 01;03;24;03

Jason Redman

So I did, Bobby and I

01;03;24;03 - 01;03;26;02

Jason Redman

went back, finished school.

01;03;26;04 - 01;03;37;24

Jason Redman

w yet. Commissioned in May of:

01;03;37;24 - 01;03;38;16

Jason Redman

Four

01;03;38;26 - 01;03;47;21

Jason Redman

obviously at this point, both Iraq and Afghanistan had kicked off and the shield teams were all going to war. It was one of the goals of the shield teams to get our guys to war.

01;03;47;21 - 01;03;50;02

Jason Redman

And, I got.

01;03;50;02 - 01;03;53;09

Jason Redman

Assigned to go to Afghanistan.

01;03;53;11 - 01;03;54;15

Jason Redman

at that point,

01;03;54;15 - 01;03;56;25

Jason Redman

So I still hadn't lost anyone.

01;03;56;25 - 01;04;10;03

Jason Redman

I personally knew. Yeah. Until Red wings happen. So operation Red wings is the Marcus Fletcher on Lone Survivor story So that is my troop I talk about that in the book

01;04;10;06 - 01;04;10;22

Jason Redman

Yeah

01;04;10;22 - 01;04;14;18

Jason Redman

th:

01;04;14;24 - 01;04;15;03

Jason Redman

That

01;04;15;03 - 01;04;18;21

Jason Redman

Was my troop Eric Christiansen was my boss

01;04;18;21 - 01;04;19;15

Jason Redman

Mike

01;04;19;15 - 01;04;32;19

Jason Redman

McGreevy was a friend from Seal team four and I actually originally was in the platoon that was on the helicopter that got shot down and they ended up moving me after a couple of months into our sister platoon Foxtrot Platoon I kind of re

01;04;32;19 - 01;04;35;22

Jason Redman

Jock things kind of interesting I often wonder you

01;04;35;22 - 01;04;36;25

Jason Redman

Know

01;04;36;28 - 01;04;37;24

Jason Redman

You could have gone

01;04;37;27 - 01;04;40;14

Jason Redman

I could have been on that helicopter I mean so

01;04;40;17 - 01;04;40;28

Jason Redman

Yeah

01;04;40;29 - 01;04;42;24

Jason Redman

You never know why things happen

01;04;42;27 - 01;04;43;09

Jason Redman

Yeah.

01;04;43;09 - 01;04;48;05

Jason Redman

But that was the first, like. It is for real.

01;04;49;16 - 01;04;54;09

Jason Redman

Headed to Afghanistan and saw some of my first combat.

01;04;54;12 - 01;04;55;19

Jason Redman

Coming full circle

01;04;55;19 - 01;04;56;01

Jason Redman

To nine

01;04;56;01 - 01;05;00;11

Jason Redman

11 The power of that day every.

01;05;00;14 - 01;05;02;14

Jason Redman

For the Seal teams At least I can't speak for.

01;05;02;14 - 01;05;06;12

Jason Redman

Other units, but for us, we wanted to be operating that day We did

01;05;06;12 - 01;05;07;09

Jason Redman

Everything in our

01;05;07;09 - 01;05;19;09

Jason Redman

Power to be conducting missions and I was fortunate enough to do two deployments with with 911 in that cycle And it was our goal to go crack skulls on that day Like we tried to find targets where hey we know you're

01;05;19;09 - 01;05;20;07

Jason Redman

Bad

01;05;20;07 - 01;05;20;21

Jason Redman

and we

01;05;20;21 - 01;05;26;03

Jason Redman

Want to pay you in kind for what you did and there was a lot of power in

01;05;26;03 - 01;05;28;07

Jason Redman

That yeah.

01;05;28;07 - 01;05;32;12

Jason Redman

you know just because the amount of deaths and the guys that we've lost I think

01;05;32;15 - 01;05;33;08

Jason Redman

Anything after

01;05;33;08 - 01;05;36;02

Jason Redman

911 in the global war on terror goes back to

01;05;36;02 - 01;05;40;28

Jason Redman

That day And the attack that happened

01;05;41;00 - 01;05;41;29

Jason Redman

I was wounded.

01;05;41;29 - 01;05;55;06

Jason Redman

Interestingly enough, the night I was wounded, we were supposed to conduct a mission on September 11th, and it got bombed. So I got technically the night I was wounded. Could have been a 911 mission. It just the weather.

01;05;55;06 - 01;05;56;07

Jason Redman

I don't remember.

01;05;56;07 - 01;06;05;17

Jason Redman

What caused that. something stopped that mission for happened. And then another mission. Pop, that we did on September, 12th and 13th.

01;06;05;17 - 01;06;07;25

Jason Redman

Yeah, it's tough. And especially when you fast.

01;06;07;25 - 01;06;18;13

Jason Redman

Forward to the collapse and fall of Afghanistan. if you look at the 911 attack us going into Afghanistan.

01;06;18;13 - 01;06;20;10

Jason Redman

And, the.

01;06;20;11 - 01;06;21;01

Jason Redman

Afghanistan

01;06;21;01 - 01;06;22;27

Jason Redman

Was under Taliban rule which was

01;06;22;27 - 01;06;23;09

Jason Redman

A

01;06;23;09 - 01;06;28;14

Jason Redman

Theocratic state you know pretty much And the Taliban definitely ruled with an iron hand

01;06;28;16 - 01;06;31;04

Jason Redman

very brutal

01;06;31;06 - 01;06;34;18

Jason Redman

under Sharia law. So.

01;06;34;20 - 01;06;36;18

Jason Redman

and, and I guess

01;06;36;18 - 01;06;48;12

Jason Redman

Back in the 60s from what I understand Afghanistan was a little more free and definitely kind of expanding their wings on freedom and women's rights and all these things and then coming into.

01;06;48;14 - 01;06;49;24

Jason Redman

moving in its 60s and.

01;06;49;24 - 01;06;59;09

Jason Redman

70s, I think then when the Soviets came in they wanted to turn it into a communist state and that's what led to the Soviet war

01;06;59;11 - 01;07;02;01

Jason Redman

Which ultimately that led

01;07;02;01 - 01;07;06;23

Jason Redman

To the Taliban after that which then led to 911

01;07;06;25 - 01;07;08;17

Jason Redman

So we came in.

01;07;08;17 - 01;07;18;22

Jason Redman

And we built all these relationships with the Afghans, and they saw a level despite living in a war zone for two decades, they saw a level of freedom that they haven't seen in a long time.

01;07;18;29 - 01;07;19;01

Jason Redman

I

01;07;19;01 - 01;07;21;17

Pat McCalla

was just thinking that, like most of them had never experienced.

01;07;21;24 - 01;07;23;24

Jason Redman

That's right. Well, and one of the bigger.

01;07;23;24 - 01;07;25;04

Jason Redman

Things was.

01;07;25;06 - 01;07;25;25

Jason Redman

women.

01;07;25;25 - 01;07;26;09

Jason Redman

Going to.

01;07;26;09 - 01;07;29;11

Jason Redman

School or women in leadership positions. I mean.

01;07;29;11 - 01;07;32;04

Jason Redman

That was something that never happened under the Taliban.

01;07;33;10 - 01;07;37;22

Jason Redman

Gay rights, whether you agree or disagree. I mean, in a free society.

01;07;37;24 - 01;07;38;18

Jason Redman

In my opinion.

01;07;38;18 - 01;07;41;08

Jason Redman

If it's not negatively impacting other people.

01;07;41;13 - 01;07;42;22

Jason Redman

That's a whole nother subject here.

01;07;42;28 - 01;07;44;15

Jason Redman

But if it's not.

01;07;44;15 - 01;07;45;09

Jason Redman

Then.

01;07;45;12 - 01;07;46;00

Jason Redman

And that was.

01;07;46;00 - 01;07;48;07

Jason Redman

Something that never once again would have happened in the.

01;07;48;07 - 01;07;49;06

Jason Redman

Taliban.

01;07;49;06 - 01;07;52;09

Jason Redman

So when we.

01;07;52;12 - 01;07;55;25

Jason Redman

Decided to pull out of Afghanistan, the manner we did, I think.

01;07;55;28 - 01;07;56;23

Jason Redman

That really.

01;07;56;23 - 01;08;09;03

Jason Redman

Hurt a lot of us. Thinking back all the way back to the beginning of this, from 911 all the way through almost two decades, those of us who lost friends there, those of us who had made friends with,

01;08;09;05 - 01;08;11;11

Jason Redman

Afghan members and I didn't I didn't get.

01;08;11;11 - 01;08;12;05

Jason Redman

To know some of.

01;08;12;05 - 01;08;12;19

Jason Redman

The.

01;08;12;22 - 01;08;28;27

Jason Redman

I didn't interact quite as much, but I have friends who became tremendous friends with some of the interpreters and the families and these people that risked their lives for this future, for this future Afghanistan that they were promised would be free.

01;08;29;00 - 01;08;29;22

Jason Redman

and and.

01;08;29;22 - 01;08;31;07

Jason Redman

Obviously, we just.

01;08;31;09 - 01;08;32;13

Jason Redman

So I don't understand.

01;08;32;13 - 01;08;41;27

Jason Redman

That how we turn the country back over to the exact same people who we went to war with 20 years earlier, who helped facilitate the nine over 11 attacks on our.

01;08;41;27 - 01;08;43;02

Jason Redman

Stuff. Yeah,

01;08;43;02 - 01;08;50;05

Pat McCalla

probably was really painful a few weeks ago for you to watch them doing that parade in Afghanistan with with our, equipment.

01;08;50;05 - 01;08;51;07

Jason Redman

Yeah, yeah,

01;08;51;07 - 01;08;52;03

Pat McCalla

yeah, I imagine.

01;09;03;29 - 01;09;14;10

Pat McCalla

Well, Jason, man, what a gift. thank you again. And I just want to honor you and say thank you for your service and the many, like you that have served our country.

01;09;14;10 - 01;09;16;10

Pat McCalla

First responders are protectors, as you call

01;09;16;10 - 01;09;17;03

Jason Redman

That's right.

01;09;30;25 - 01;09;32;20

Jason Redman

All right, let's see if you can do it again.

01;09;32;20 - 01;09;36;13

Jason Redman

All right. I had to think about this because I was like, man, what have I not put out there?

01;09;36;13 - 01;09;38;08

Jason Redman

You know, when your life is an open book.

01;09;38;15 - 01;09;38;29

Pat McCalla

Yeah.

01;09;39;27 - 01;09;45;10

Jason Redman

I once watched 12 strong the movie in the white House sitting in between Donald Trump Dick Cheney and Barack Obama

01;09;45;16 - 01;09;45;19

Jason Redman

Oh

01;09;45;19 - 01;09;46;22

Pat McCalla

my goodness

01;09;46;22 - 01;09;58;00

Jason Redman

I once did the worm on the commander's table at a Navy formal dinner And when I first learned to skydive I did not use the lifesaving device also known as an automatic

01;09;58;00 - 01;10;00;13

Jason Redman

Activation device because I couldn't afford one

01;10;01;08 - 01;10;03;29

Pat McCalla

Those are good. Okay.

01;10;04;02 - 01;10;07;07

Pat McCalla

I'm going to go to 12 strong When did that come out?

01;10;07;07 - 01;10;10;21

Pat McCalla

going to say that was true that that was true.

01;10;10;21 - 01;10;11;21

Jason Redman

am I right? Oh.

01;10;11;22 - 01;10;14;27

Jason Redman

Are we are we answering now or do we wait till you go through all three.

01;10;15;00 - 01;10;15;05

Jason Redman

So

01;10;17;26 - 01;10;19;10

Jason Redman

it. Okay.

01;10;19;13 - 01;10;28;01

Jason Redman

Now that one's false right out of the gate. So but here's what's true okay. There's a part of that. That's not.

01;10;28;01 - 01;10;28;12

Jason Redman

True.

01;10;28;14 - 01;10;32;09

Jason Redman

You did think a while on these. And those were good. Yeah You.

01;10;32;11 - 01;10;33;02

Jason Redman

Yeah.

01;10;33;05 - 01;10;38;01

Jason Redman

So, I did watch 12 strong with, Trump and Cheney.

01;10;38;07 - 01;10;39;14

Jason Redman

Obama was not there.

01;10;39;14 - 01;10;42;07

Pat McCalla

Okay. So I'm going to give myself half a point for that.

01;10;44;02 - 01;10;56;19

Jason Redman

So. Okay. Well, I'm curious then. Which one? oh. That was the lie. That was the lot. Yeah, the one I did do, the worm. I can actually do the worm really good. I'm a dancer and I'm a dancer. Like

01;10;56;27 - 01;11;01;22

Jason Redman

my family. When we do events together, we dance and we love it, and it's just fun.

01;11;01;22 - 01;11;02;22

Jason Redman

And,

01;11;02;24 - 01;11;08;19

Jason Redman

I can do an amazing worm. So one night at, navy ball, when I was in ROTC.

01;11;08;19 - 01;11;11;19

Jason Redman

We all were having fun. And,

01;11;11;21 - 01;11;21;26

Jason Redman

The commander's table had left. I don't know what possessed me. I think at some point, you know, we're all dancing and having fun. And I jumped up on the table.

01;11;21;26 - 01;11;26;16

Jason Redman

And did the worm across the commander's table, much to the joys of.

01;11;26;16 - 01;11;27;07

Jason Redman

The,

01;11;27;16 - 01;11;29;13

Jason Redman

Find out.

01;11;29;16 - 01;11;30;08

Jason Redman

no. There we go.

01;11;30;08 - 01;11;32;00

Jason Redman

On. At this point,

01;11;32;00 - 01;11;34;11

Pat McCalla

And then what about your you the safety device?

01;11;34;11 - 01;11;35;14

Jason Redman

That is true.

01;11;35;17 - 01;11;37;19

Jason Redman

I was an idiot,

01;11;37;21 - 01;11;40;16

Jason Redman

When I first started learning to skydive in Panama.

01;11;40;16 - 01;11;42;06

Jason Redman

I bought a parachute, and it didn't.

01;11;42;06 - 01;11;43;12

Jason Redman

Have, an.

01;11;43;12 - 01;11;46;23

Jason Redman

Automatic activation device. So what it is, it's a device.

01;11;46;26 - 01;11;48;16

Jason Redman

That if you have.

01;11;48;16 - 01;11;52;11

Jason Redman

A if you're knocked out, if you have a malfunction, if there's some sort of.

01;11;52;11 - 01;11;54;23

Jason Redman

Issue, it calculates how fast.

01;11;54;23 - 01;11;54;28

Jason Redman

You're.

01;11;54;28 - 01;11;56;29

Jason Redman

Falling and it will automatically.

01;11;56;29 - 01;12;10;10

Jason Redman

Deploy your reserve. it'll cut away your main and deploy your reserve so you can have a bad man. You could be unconscious. I didn't jump with one for the first. I don't know, it wasn't until I bought my own parachute again years later.

01;12;10;23 - 01;12;19;27

Jason Redman

So pretty, pretty stupid. I was young and dumb and and still invincible. But I just, I couldn't it was more expensive. It was like an additional thousand dollars.

01;12;19;27 - 01;12;20;19

Jason Redman

That I didn't have.

01;12;20;19 - 01;12;22;04

Jason Redman

And I was like, I'll be fine.

01;12;22;08 - 01;12;22;21

Jason Redman

At that point

01;12;22;21 - 01;12;26;11

Pat McCalla

in your life, you're, you weren't worth $1,000. You assumed I

01;12;26;13 - 01;12;26;23

Jason Redman

Yeah.

01;12;26;23 - 01;12;29;25

Jason Redman

I wasn't making much money is. Yeah, yeah.
