I Am Number Nine: Minion Games, Movie Schemes, and Louis’ Villain Turn

Hosts Leif (a longtime Gossip Girl viewer) and Steve (a first-timer) recap Season 5, Episode 6, “I Am Number Nine” (aired Nov. 7, 2011), discussing writer Jake Coburn, director Andy Wolk, and returning minions plus Ivy/“Charlie.” They break down plotlines: Blair stages a bridesmaid competition that culminates in a “kiss Nate” challenge; Nate confronts being Diana’s secret boy toy and is manipulated into taking Ivy as his date; Louis bribes Chuck’s therapist Dr. Barnes to derail Chuck’s progress, but Chuck exposes the scheme publicly and later apologizes to Blair; Serena’s attempt to protect Dan backfires as Diana kills Dan’s movie deal and recruits Serena to write a Spectator blog aimed at taking down Gossip Girl. They grade the episode a C, name Serena’s blue dress best outfit, and tease Episode 7, “The Big Sleep.”

The Gossip Girl Theme Performed By Steve Marchion.

Transcripts

Leif:

I had this thought that it'd be funny in a

Leif:

hypothetical world where this movie does get made,

Leif:

where the likable, relatable character is actually

Leif:

Vanessa. Like, everyone loves Vanessa.

Steve:

Yeah. Uh, the hero of the book.

Leif:

Hey, Upper east siders, and all you scandal loving

Leif:

listeners out there, you just tuned into the non

Leif:

judging breakfast pod where the coffee is strong,

Leif:

the waffles are fresh, and the gossip is hotter

Leif:

than ever. My name is Leif and I'm your seasoned

Leif:

Gossip Girl veteran.

Steve:

And I'm Steve, the newbie, the rookie, the

Steve:

greenhorn, the. Where are we now, Leaf? That we're

Steve:

in season five?

Leif:

I'm not sure, but what if we take this podcast and

Leif:

glee it up? You know, music, originals or covers.

Steve:

When you're a minion, you're a minion all the way

Steve:

from your first Louboutins until your last part.

Leif:

I was just kidding. This is an important

Leif:

independent podcast, not newsies.

Steve:

Oh, oh, of course, of course. So here's the deal,

Steve:

folks. Leaf has been watching Gossip Girl since it

Steve:

first aired, and I'm diving in for the first time.

Steve:

And together we are your dynamic duo, bringing you

Steve:

all the drama, romance and and sometimes

Steve:

questionable fashion choices of this iconic 2007

Steve:

series.

Leif:

Bring your magnifying glasses, because each week

Leif:

we're dissecting every juicy detail of the show

Leif:

one episode at a time. We'll connect the dots,

Leif:

uncover those sneaky little Easter eggs, and of

Leif:

course, serve up some piping hot behind the scenes

Leif:

tea. And expect some iconic phantom moments too,

Leif:

because what's a deep dive without a little drama?

Steve:

And since we are all about inclusivity here at the

Steve:

non judging breakfast pod, there is always a seat

Steve:

for you at the non judging breakfast table. So go

Steve:

ahead and grab a mimosa, a cup of coffee, or roll

Steve:

something up from Nader Chuck's stash, and let's

Steve:

go ahead and get into this.

Leif:

So we are here to talk about season five, episode

Leif:

six, I am number nine. The original air date was

Leif:

November 7, 2011. It was of course based on the

Leif:

movie I Am Number four. This sci fi thriller

Leif:

directed by DJ Caruso and starring Alex Petruff,

Leif:

Pettifer Timothy Oliphant and Diana Argonne.

Steve:

I'm not familiar.

Leif:

Uh, I believe I did see this. It's very

Leif:

forgettable because I don't remember anything

Leif:

really about it other than I believe they are like

Leif:

genetic experiments, these teenagers and they

Leif:

escape and they have some kind of superpowers, I

Leif:

think so.

Steve:

It's like a young Timothy elephant.

Leif:

He might have been the bad guy. Okay, it's 2011,

Leif:

so it just came out and.

Steve:

Oh, okay.

Leif:

Diana Argon is, uh, Quinn Fabre from Glee.

Steve:

Okay, okay.

Leif:

The cheerleader. The blind cheerleader.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Timothy Oliphant is the one that

Steve:

stood out for me in there.

Leif:

I believe he might be like a villain, possibly.

Steve:

That makes sense.

Leif:

There's some, uh. I forget. I think that. Yeah,

Leif:

Alex, he was someone at the moment too. Uh, he was

Leif:

like some blonde, studly looking dude. Oh, okay,

Leif:

that Diana Argon of dudes.

Steve:

Got you.

Leif:

This episode was written by Jake Coburn. He came

Leif:

on the scene in season three. Written a few

Leif:

episodes here, but you could tell because his

Leif:

episodes are not great. So you could tell, but

Leif:

he's advanced his way up the food chain.

Steve:

Right.

Leif:

Because he was story editor in season three,

Leif:

executive story editor in season four. Now season

Leif:

five, he is co producer. And in season six, he

Leif:

will go on, uh, to be supervising producer.

Steve:

Oh, wow.

Leif:

But these are the actual episodes he's written so

Leif:

far. In season three, Enough About Eve and the

Leif:

Empire Strikes Jack.

Steve:

Yikes.

Leif:

And in season four, Easy J and Panic Roommate.

Steve:

Yikes.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

Easy J was the Tim Gunn.

Leif:

Yeah. So that was an okay one. And Enough About

Leif:

Eve was an okay one. That was with the freshman,

Leif:

uh, toast, where Vanessa and Blair were competing.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah.

Leif:

And Blair tricks Chuck into kissing the dude.

Steve:

Right, right, right. I was thinking Ava, not Eve.

Steve:

That. I remember that episode now. That one wasn't

Steve:

terrible.

Leif:

But Empire Strikes Jack and Panic Roommate were

Leif:

both really bad.

Steve:

Yeah, really bad.

Leif:

But he plays off his politics, I think.

Steve:

Mhm. Yeah.

Leif:

The episode was directed by Andy Wolk. This is his

Leif:

first of three episodes of Gossip Girl. He's been

Leif:

directing TV since 1990. He did the episode of

Leif:

Sopranos in season one called Boca. I don't

Leif:

remember that one.

Steve:

No, I don't remember. I don't remember episode

Steve:

titles like that for Sopranos.

Leif:

So that's the one where everyone. The rumor goes

Leif:

around about, uh, the Junior Gifts Head. Oh, under

Leif:

the board.

Steve:

Right, right.

Leif:

And then, uh, he directed for Arlis, Tales from

Leif:

the Crypt, Heart of Dixie, and Carried the Carrie

Leif:

Diaries. Those last two are knittable because they

Leif:

are also Josh Schwartz shows. So apparently he

Leif:

liked his work.

Steve:

What was the Carrie Diaries? Wasn't that a Sex in

Steve:

the City thing?

Leif:

It's prequel. Yeah, it's an 80s Carrie, uh, as a

Leif:

teenager.

Steve:

Okay.

Leif:

It was really bad.

Steve:

I can imagine. I can imagine.

Leif:

So our guest star tonight, we get Alice Callahan,

Leif:

friend of the pod, back as Jessica.

Steve:

Yes. Great work.

Leif:

Yep. And we have Amanda Seton as Penelope Shifai.

Leif:

And Nan Zhang back as Cotti Farkas.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah. It was a little bummed that notably

Steve:

missing is. We are notably missing is. Uh, we've

Steve:

also been noticeably missing Melissa Fumero as

Steve:

well.

Leif:

Yeah, I believe she's probably has other work at

Leif:

this point.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah. She may have gone on to, like, soaps

Steve:

or something like that before going to Brooklyn.

Steve:

Nine. Nine.

Leif:

Nan Zhang. Ah. Taking some time off from medical

Leif:

school.

Steve:

Yes.

Leif:

M. To come back to Gossip Girl.

Steve:

Yes.

Leif:

Why don't you give us that vulture recap?

Steve:

Here we go. Uh, it's the nature of a Gossip Girl

Steve:

character to be self destructive, to make poor

Steve:

decisions that compromise one's morality and often

Steve:

one's virtue. But on last night's episode, a few

Steve:

Upper East Siders stood up and said, enough.

Steve:

Serena decided that she would rather lose a job

Steve:

she did not need at all than deceive her brother

Steve:

lover Dan by helping to make a movie she knew

Steve:

would displease him. Chuck made a decision to move

Steve:

on from his prolonged period of mourning over

Steve:

Blair. Nate told Diana he didn't want to be the

Steve:

boy toy she secretly used for sex, but the boy toy

Steve:

everyone knew she used for sexual. And Diana, in

Steve:

turn, fulfilled her promise to show New York City

Steve:

who she really is. Which is a dangerously scary

Steve:

cougar.

Leif:

Yeah, these are getting shorter and shorter as

Leif:

they wind down towards the end.

Steve:

I'm grateful for the length, but it's also. You're

Steve:

giving up, aren't you, Vulture?

Leif:

Even though they shout out in this episode.

Steve:

Oh, yeah, they did, didn't they? Funny, they

Steve:

didn't mention it too.

Leif:

It is mentioned in the Reality Index, which is

Leif:

like. So they have the recap, and then there's

Leif:

like, something called the reality index they have

Leif:

below that.

Steve:

Uh-huh.

Leif:

Which you should check out at some point. They

Leif:

say, like, oh, mention vulture mention plus 10.

Steve:

Oh, wow. Uh, okay, cool.

Leif:

So we get into Act 1 with a gossip Girl monologue.

Leif:

They say the road of life is long and winding, so

Leif:

it's important to mark the milestones along the

Leif:

way. From picking your bridesmaids to christening

Leif:

your boss's new desk, landing on your first best

Leif:

seller list, to finally asking for help. But keep

Leif:

your eyes on the road, Upper East Siders, or you

Leif:

could get lost along the way. We get that

Leif:

narration over a short montage. Dorota is pinning

Leif:

photos of Blair's minions, past and present onto a

Leif:

whiteboard while Blair watches. Nate is trying to

Leif:

work but continues to be sexually harassed by his

Leif:

boss. Dan is cutting out the list that shows

Leif:

inside Debuting at number nine. But we learn

Leif:

Rufus's album debuted at eight. Shtuck Therapy

Leif:

appears to be going well.

Steve:

Few things here. First of all, it was the setup

Steve:

for the minion battle, which was. I was here for

Steve:

it.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

Because it was just so classic.

Leif:

It was the highlight of the episode.

Steve:

Yeah, it was. It was. It was classic Gossip Girl.

Steve:

It was classic Blair. Season one Gossip Girl.

Leif:

Well, I hated Blair.

Steve:

Uh, but I'm. But I mean, like, the. The

Steve:

competition was very reminiscent of season one

Steve:

Gossip Girl. Then we have the Nate and Diana

Steve:

thing, where it's like, oh, can you come do

Steve:

something else for me, please? Oh, not a problem.

Leif:

Jesus Christ, Nate.

Steve:

Yeah, like, oh, prosthete Nate Statute. And then

Steve:

we also had the Lincoln Hawk debuts at number

Steve:

eight. So one higher than Dan debuted.

Leif:

Ah.

Steve:

With his debut novel.

Leif:

Uh, and Chuck's therapy appears to be going well.

Steve:

Yeah, sure.

Leif:

For now, sure.

Steve:

God, I hate this. It's the fucking worst part of

Steve:

this whole episode. No, it isn't, is it? Oh, my

Steve:

God.

Leif:

There is one positive. We'll get to that post

Leif:

Quiteus. Nate asks Diana to be his date to the

Leif:

party tonight, but she scoffs at the notion. Diana

Leif:

doesn't want people to know she's mixing business

Leif:

with pleasure. She then assigns Nate and Charlie

Leif:

lists of people to personally deliver their

Leif:

invitations.

Steve:

Nate, sweetie, you keep using this word

Steve:

relationship. I don't think you know what that

Steve:

word means.

Leif:

Well, I mean, they are in a form of relationship.

Steve:

A relationship of sorts. Yes. I think that Nate

Steve:

has a different idea of what this relationship

Steve:

entails. Indeed, Nate wants to be a boyfriend

Steve:

right now. And Nate is not a boyfriend right now.

Leif:

No, he is a prostitute.

Steve:

He is a prostitute. A beautiful, dumb prostitute.

Leif:

Chuck is explaining to Dr. Barnes that he has a

Leif:

repetitive dream of something being just out of

Leif:

his reach. Dr. Barnes says Chuck is still hiding

Leif:

someone, despite talking freely about his parental

Leif:

woes.

Steve:

Yeah, kind of a classic therapy scene. And, yeah,

Steve:

it does kind of seem like it's going well for

Steve:

Chuck. I. You know, he tries to, like, shoot some

Steve:

flirtiness, and she's like, okay, I appreciate

Steve:

your humor, but that's not what we're here for.

Steve:

And Chuck, to just be like, you think I'm

Steve:

deflecting? Yeah, you are. Felt actually maybe a

Steve:

little more honest of a therapy scene than you get

Steve:

in a lot of tv. I feel.

Leif:

Blair goes to Louie, uh, at breakfast and asks

Leif:

permission to do some scheming and manipulation in

Leif:

her quest to pick a bridesmaid. Louie isn't

Leif:

thrilled by the idea, but eventually relents as

Leif:

long as her games are completed before the party

Leif:

tonight.

Steve:

First of all, Blair, you're not scheming. You're

Steve:

just doing your classic Blair bullshit. So, like,

Steve:

I don't know. I. But also the whole, like, oh,

Steve:

well, Louie, you just don't have it in you to

Steve:

scheme was kind of the takeaway, uh, of this one.

Leif:

Yeah. Serena comes into work and Jane introduces

Leif:

her to Diana. It turns out the two women are old

Leif:

friends. Diana tries to pressure Serena into

Leif:

coming to the party tonight and potentially

Leif:

writing a blog about her life.

Steve:

I have more. I gained respect for Serena in

Steve:

regards to this, how she is like, I've been

Steve:

followed my whole life by Gossip Girl. I'm not

Steve:

about to do that to other people. I'm not going to

Steve:

be your person to be the new Gossip Girl because

Steve:

I'm not going to put other people through that.

Steve:

And even through the episode, even through taking

Steve:

the position later, she doesn't back down on that

Steve:

point that she is not here to follow and ruin

Steve:

people's lives.

Leif:

Correct. Blair is laying out the basics of the

Leif:

bridesmaids competition to Jessica, Penelope, and

Leif:

Cotty when Ivy gets off the elevator at the

Leif:

Waldorf apartment. Blair ropes Ivy into the

Leif:

competition. So Ivy texts Nate to come pick up her

Leif:

list of invites to deliver.

Steve:

Uh, oh, yeah, because Nelli Yuki. Where's Nelli

Steve:

Yuki? Well, she's still in school and she hates

Steve:

you.

Leif:

Yeah,

Steve:

I would love a Nellie Yuki return.

Leif:

I'm, uh, Nellie.

Steve:

I would love for her to show up at some point, if

Steve:

for no other reason, I want her to gawk at Dan

Steve:

more like I want her to. I loved that. But, yeah,

Steve:

then, oh, well, here's a random person that walked

Steve:

in whose cousin will be in my wedding. So sure

Steve:

you're in the competition now, Charlie. Makes

Steve:

sense in the world of Gossip Girl. Yes, it does.

Leif:

Louie has officially entered his villain era. He

Leif:

is standing in the rain waiting for Dr. Barnes to

Leif:

emerge from her building. He hands her an envelope

Leif:

with money and aggressively tells her she needs to

Leif:

cause Chuck to explode so that Blair will never

Leif:

pick him again.

Steve:

Louie, Louie, you fucking dumbass. As a human male

Steve:

that I am. No better way to push someone into the

Steve:

arms of someone you don't want them to than by

Steve:

going through such lengths to make sure they stay

Steve:

apart. It is like a law of nature that the harder

Steve:

you try to separate two people, the more they're

Steve:

going to just be drawn together. I think about my

Steve:

daughter was dating this guy at one point who

Steve:

snuck out of his house to come see her at mine. I

Steve:

Knew he was coming over after work. I knew that it

Steve:

was going to be late. I said this was okay. His

Steve:

dad called me, flipping out, talking about how

Steve:

they shouldn't be allowed to see each other and

Steve:

how he wants to keep him away from each other. And

Steve:

I'm like, why? My kid didn't do anything wrong.

Steve:

Your kid snuck out. I'll tell him he can't come

Steve:

here if you don't give him permission. My whole

Steve:

point to this being after I fought to let Emily

Steve:

still be friends with this guy or still be in a

Steve:

relationship with this guy, she comes to me and

Steve:

she's like, nah, I'm good. I'm not in for the

Steve:

games.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

So, like, if Louie would have just been like, oh,

Steve:

uh, wow, I found this thing, but she's still with

Steve:

me. Okay, well, that's the sign I need then. He

Steve:

doesn't look like an asshole in the end. Here. Why

Steve:

are you doing this, Louie?

Leif:

Uh, well, it's because the theme of the show.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

Is if you're around the Upper east side,

Leif:

especially around Blair, you're just going to

Leif:

become corrupted.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

It's inevitable.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

This is what Gossip Girl thinks about it, though.

Leif:

Looks like Louie is about to make young Bass road

Leif:

to recovery a bumpy ride. Better buckle up, Chuck.

Leif:

We move into Act 2. Dr. Barnes shows up at the

Leif:

Empire to light Chuck's fuse. She immediately

Leif:

brings up Blair and presses Chuck on how he feels

Leif:

about her marrying Louis. Chuck goes into his safe

Leif:

and pulls out the Harry Winston ring and says if

Leif:

he has really given up on Blair, he should return

Leif:

the ring, which he does give to Dr. Barnes. As she

Leif:

gets on the elevator to leave, she texts Louis

Leif:

that she can't do this anymore.

Steve:

I think the one big stand. There's two big

Steve:

standouts to me in this scene. The first is that

Steve:

when she gets there and Chuck is like, what are

Steve:

you doing here? And she's like, I thought, um,

Steve:

seeing you in your natural environment would help

Steve:

me learn more about you. You had your entire way

Steve:

over here to think up your lie. Plus the 24

Steve:

seconds in the elevator that. Because isn't that

Steve:

the timing of the elevator that we figured out?

Leif:

Uh, well, her main explanation was that she felt

Leif:

that the session was incomplete, which I don't

Leif:

think a therapist has ever done, ever. No, no, but

Leif:

still, I mean, that's an explanation. It makes

Leif:

some sort of sense.

Steve:

The number of times that I've been, like, mid

Steve:

sentence with my therapist, and it's like, well,

Steve:

that's the time we have. And my therapist was

Steve:

really good about not just, okay, we're done. Get

Steve:

out. But it was still. There's a time limit, and

Steve:

they got

Leif:

another patient coming in, and, uh, they have,

Leif:

like a 10 minute buffer or whatever.

Steve:

Yeah. If that. And it's like, I will see you next

Steve:

week. My therapist, it would be like she would

Steve:

walk someone out and walk me back in. So it's

Steve:

like, I'll see you next week, and we'll talk about

Steve:

this more. If there's something really bothering

Steve:

you, text me.

Leif:

Yeah. Serena and Dan are excited for the first

Leif:

developmental meeting. Jane enters with an

Leif:

executive from Warner's. Jane immediately starts

Leif:

pitching horrible ideas for the script and

Leif:

bulldozes right past Serena's attempts to defend

Leif:

Dan and his protagonist, Dylan Hunter. Dan storms

Leif:

out.

Steve:

First of all, the exec that comes in, she's on the

Steve:

pit right now. Princess on the pit. I don't know

Steve:

if you're watching the pit, but I can't, uh, stop

Steve:

watching it. It's, um.

Leif:

I hear it's good.

Steve:

It is fantastic. I. I don't. I don't know if

Steve:

you're into, like, the genre.

Leif:

Not particularly.

Steve:

Yeah. And I'm not either, particularly. But I just

Steve:

think they. That there's enough character drama

Steve:

surrounding it that it makes for good tv.

Leif:

It's on the list. So they talk about needing to

Leif:

bring in an outsider character. I had this thought

Leif:

that it'd be funny in a hypothetical world where

Leif:

this movie does get made, where the likable,

Leif:

relatable character is actually Vanessa. Everyone

Leif:

loves Vanessa.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Steve:

Ah, the hero of the book. Because it's funny you

Steve:

say that, because what I. Where my mind went was

Steve:

basically an extra character that was a super

Steve:

likable guy that would end up actually being an

Steve:

actual Nate instead of the conflagration of Nate.

Steve:

And Eric would just lay out this whole thing, and

Steve:

it's like, wow, I could have written him in my

Steve:

book. Huh? Huh? Derek

Leif:

Blair, with a bedazzled referee whistle around her

Leif:

neck and trying her best to look like Kate

Leif:

Middleton, explains the competition to the

Leif:

minions. And Charlie Blair barks orders as the

Leif:

competitors simulate the potential bridesmaids

Leif:

tasks while Dorota pretends to be a paparazzo.

Steve:

Yeah, that was funny. Yeah, the. And, like, she's

Steve:

gotta be. Hide that baby bump. What baby bump?

Steve:

Good on you. Good job, Jessica. Or wait, Jessica.

Steve:

Yeah, Jessica. Right. Yeah. I kept, um, getting

Steve:

her name and the actor's name mixed up.

Leif:

Nate goes to deliver the invite to Keith Gessen.

Leif:

Unfortunately, Mr. Gessen's assistant spills the

Leif:

tea that Keith is Already going as Diana's date to

Leif:

the party. Another assistant.

Steve:

Uh, yeah. But honestly, this one might be the

Steve:

first time I given up to an assistant because he

Steve:

was like, he's already going to that party as the

Steve:

date of the CEO. But I'll take this iPad from you

Steve:

anyway. Thanks, sweetie.

Leif:

Uh, you don't know about this. And you say you're

Leif:

in media.

Steve:

Yeah. Yes. You don't know and you're in media and

Steve:

you don't know and, like, shows him the front page

Steve:

picture.

Leif:

Oh, Nate.

Steve:

Sweet, sweet Nate. Nate M. You're. It's not a

Steve:

relationship, Nate. You're a side piece

Steve:

prostitute.

Leif:

Serena goes to the loft and tells Dan that Jane

Leif:

wants him to waive his right to the script. Serena

Leif:

gives her word to defend Dan's vision and

Leif:

convinces him to give it up.

Steve:

Honestly, I think that that is the right move to

Steve:

do objectively in a real world situation. If this

Steve:

was the real world, Dan

Leif:

has zero screenwriting experience.

Steve:

Zero screenwriting experience. And she's right. He

Steve:

should be right on his next novel. And they should

Steve:

hire a great screenwriter to do the adaptation.

Steve:

That is all objectively true. Like, they say he's

Steve:

too close to the material to not just make it a

Steve:

replica of the book. Which. Books and movies don't

Steve:

always translate like that. Although the one

Steve:

person did say that he could just copy and paste

Steve:

it and it's done.

Leif:

And, uh, this is what Gossip Girl says about it.

Leif:

Careful, S. Everybody knows the road to hell is

Leif:

paved with good intentions and shady bosses. Act

Leif:

three begins. Nate calls Diana to confront her

Leif:

about Keith Gessen. She doesn't deny it, but says

Leif:

it's just business. She says now is not the right

Leif:

time to tell people about her and Nate.

Steve:

Yeah, he's just business, this other guy I'm

Steve:

banging. Just business, huh? I'm just banging him

Steve:

for business. I'm banging you for business and

Steve:

pleasure. No, I'm prostituting myself out to

Steve:

somebody else so that you can prostitute yourself

Steve:

to me.

Leif:

Exactly. It's the chain of prostitution.

Steve:

It's the chain of prostitution.

Leif:

Multilevel marketing.

Steve:

Yeah, it's vertical integration. It's a pyramid

Steve:

scheme.

Leif:

Back at the production office, Serena tells Jane

Leif:

that she got Dan to waive the rights. Jane is once

Leif:

again team Serena. But much to Serena's dismay,

Leif:

Jane explains that she is going to Zuckerberg,

Leif:

Dan's character in the movie, and and reveals that

Leif:

she already has Aaron Sorkin lined up to do it.

Steve:

Aaron Sorkin would be a phenomenal screenwriter.

Steve:

Now, this is also when she tells why she got Dan

Steve:

off the project and everything too. This is where

Steve:

she reveals that they're going to Zuckerberg him.

Steve:

This is one of the most baffled, like, ridiculous

Steve:

things to me. Because, like, you don't have a

Steve:

draft of the movie yet, so this producer can go

Steve:

ahead and say, yeah, give me a draft of this and

Steve:

portray this guy this way. That doesn't mean

Steve:

that's the movie that's getting made. Like, a

Steve:

draft of the screenplay has not been written and

Steve:

this producer is already locked in solid on this

Steve:

one decision that this guy is an asshole, and

Steve:

that's how we're going to portray him. And it's

Steve:

like, it seems like an injustice to the story

Steve:

you're trying to tell to.

Leif:

So I get all that. But what I didn't get about

Leif:

this plot at first was that the book already

Leif:

portrays Dylan Hunter as the worst. They've

Leif:

already said this multiple times.

Steve:

Dan has said over and over, I come out looking

Steve:

worse than anybody else.

Leif:

Then I realized this is actually very smart

Leif:

writing because they're writing Serena's character

Leif:

as she is. She's fucking dumb, and she's trying to

Leif:

protect people in the worst possible way. I don't

Leif:

even know if Dan would have even minded this

Leif:

whole.

Steve:

Yeah, uh, he's already in the book

Leif:

portrayed as the worst.

Steve:

Well, and so, which brings me to another point

Steve:

about this, that Serena is all like, oh, I'm

Steve:

protecting you because they're going to Zuckerberg

Steve:

you. Dan has also said multiple times, this is

Steve:

fiction. This is an exaggeration. This is a

Steve:

satire. This isn't real life. So if someone

Steve:

watches that and they're like, wow, that guy's a

Steve:

real asshole, they're not going to look at Dan

Steve:

Humphrey and think, that guy that wrote this movie

Steve:

is a real asshole. Like, even though. Even if they

Steve:

know he's the insert, we know that Dan is the

Steve:

insert of Josh. Josh Saf or Josh Schwartz on this

Steve:

show, right? Mhm. And he can be an asshole. I

Steve:

don't think any less of Schwartz. I don't give a

Steve:

shit.

Leif:

Blair explains to Charlie, Penelope and Jessica

Leif:

that they have advanced to the next round. They

Leif:

will be attending this spectator party with her

Leif:

and Louie tonight. The first one to score a kiss

Leif:

with Nate wins.

Steve:

Oh, we. I missed the part where Cotty loses, I

Steve:

guess.

Leif:

But, uh, yeah, the previous competition part.

Leif:

Yeah. So, uh, okay, yeah, the previous part.

Leif:

Charlie gets top. Gets top marks, and Jessica, our

Leif:

friend Jessica literally pushes Kati out of the

Leif:

competition.

Steve:

Yes, yes, yes, that's right. I forgot.

Leif:

So now they're moving on to the next round. And.

Leif:

But I do love the long running gag of Penelope's

Leif:

unrequited love for Nate.

Steve:

Yes. I thought it was so great. And I loved when.

Steve:

When Blair did the reveal, how. How all. All three

Steve:

of them were excited.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

But well, for different. And played it so

Steve:

differently. Like Charlie played it like, oh yeah,

Steve:

I can do this. Like sweet Penelope was like,

Steve:

sploosh. And like completely flipped out. And then

Steve:

we have. And then you have Jessica like her

Steve:

armpits, you know, which is also an ongoing thing

Steve:

that they've used in previous episodes of her

Steve:

getting sweaty. So I thought that was really

Steve:

funny.

Leif:

Alice, uh, did a really good job with the physical

Leif:

comedy.

Steve:

Yes. Yeah. Yes.

Leif:

Knocking Katie over.

Steve:

Yeah. And. And later on, like running through the

Steve:

party and everything. And her reaction to that.

Steve:

Uh, yeah, I thought that she. This was some of her

Steve:

best work.

Leif:

Charlie gets a call from Diana who is pissed she

Leif:

gave her list to Nate. Charlie explains she has a

Leif:

chance to be Blair's bridesmaid and cover the

Leif:

royal wedding from the inside.

Steve:

Smooth, smart.

Leif:

Mhm. Unfortunately, it meant Nate was delivering

Leif:

the wrong messages.

Steve:

Right. And that's how Nate found out about the

Steve:

chain of prostitution.

Leif:

Serena calls Dan and invites him to her to be her

Leif:

guest to the party tonight. She says Jane wants to

Leif:

get to know him better, so he should be nice. Oh,

Leif:

Serena, such low level. The scheming.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah. Blair is so much better at the

Steve:

scheming. Serena always. She always knee jerk

Steve:

schemes and she's not good at it.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Leif:

Uh, she doesn't need a scheme. She just needs to

Leif:

wield her power.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah.

Leif:

And this is what Gossip Girl says about it. And

Leif:

um, rare midact Gossip Girl blast spotted. S try

Leif:

to navigate a slippery slope. But she's not the

Leif:

only accident waiting to happen. Charlie shows up

Leif:

the empire and finds Nate moping. He explains it's

Leif:

about a girl who he fails to name and that she's

Leif:

taking someone else to the party tonight. Charlie

Leif:

says he needs to fight fire with fire by taking

Leif:

her as his date, which he agrees.

Steve:

Yeah. Well played, Charlie. Very well played. And

Steve:

I feel like she's been kind of inate, uh, for a

Steve:

bit now that I feel like she's noticed. Nate, I

Steve:

guess is the better way to say it.

Leif:

He's an attractive guy.

Steve:

Yeah, he's a good looking dude.

Leif:

Beautiful prostitute at the dog park. Dr. Barnes

Leif:

is approached by Louis, who is upset she hasn't

Leif:

returned his calls. She reiterates that the deal

Leif:

is off and hands him back his envelope. Too late.

Leif:

However, as Chuck Also walking his dog spots the

Leif:

two arguing. Chuck calls Dr. Barnes phone and

Leif:

leaves a voicemail that he needs to meet her

Leif:

tonight.

Steve:

Yeah, I think I'm in trouble. You need to meet me

Steve:

at a party tonight. That's the place that I need

Steve:

the m. The help with you is at a party.

Leif:

Well, he usually tells people to meet him on the

Leif:

rooftop.

Steve:

That's true. That's true.

Leif:

And now we get the end of act. Gossip Girl blast.

Leif:

When you drive Chuck over the edge, it's you who

Leif:

will wind up roadkill.

Steve:

I totally forgot to bring up when he gave her the

Steve:

ring and was like, give it to charity.

Leif:

Yeah. We move into Act 4. Blair and Louie enter

Leif:

the party. Louie is annoyed when he sees the

Leif:

minions are here. Blair promises that they only

Leif:

have one task left and he won't even notice them.

Leif:

Jessica and Penelope are annoyed to see Charlie

Leif:

walk arm in arm with Nate. Nate tells Charlie she

Leif:

looks amazing.

Steve:

Yeah, they look good.

Leif:

And fuck off, Louis. I mean, who cares if her

Leif:

friends are at the party? It's a fucking party.

Steve:

Oh, yeah, yeah. And yeah, fuck off, Louis in

Steve:

general, like, yeah.

Leif:

So during the, uh, montage, we see Diana posing

Leif:

with the real life Keith Geffen. Do you know who

Leif:

he is?

Steve:

Of Geffen Records. Right.

Leif:

No. Uh, it's actually Gessen.

Steve:

Oh, Gessen.

Leif:

He is a novelist. Did all the Sad Young Literary

Leif:

Men and a Terrible Country. A novel. He also is a

Leif:

literary translator and co founder of the literary

Leif:

magazine and N1. And then we see Chuck introduce

Leif:

himself to Diana and Keith Gessen and says she

Leif:

lives up to what he's heard about her. He then

Leif:

gets the weird sense that he's seen her before,

Leif:

but she just shrugs it off as a mistake. Chuck

Leif:

sarcastically greets Louie as your highness, and

Leif:

Blair tells him to give it a rest. Pass.

Steve:

I did like Chuck in this scene. I like the whole

Steve:

highness. I like that exchange. I don't like what

Steve:

they're insinuating with the familiar feeling that

Steve:

Chuck got when he saw.

Leif:

Well, presumably he recognizes her from the photo

Leif:

that was in Bart's files. Doesn't necessarily mean

Leif:

I think she was just in the files.

Steve:

I know, I know, but they're trying to make me

Steve:

think something. They're trying very hard to make

Steve:

me think something. And if you know me, you know

Steve:

that thinking isn't what I like to do.

Leif:

Dan enters the party and immediately finds Jane

Leif:

and Serena. Dan thanks a surprised Jane for

Leif:

inviting him. She quickly hides the shock and

Leif:

tells him they got Sorkin to write the screenplay.

Leif:

Dan goes to call his agent and tell her Jane is

Leif:

Annoyed at Serena's attempt to get Jane to like

Leif:

Dan, Jane says the Zuckerberg version is already

Leif:

happening and takes Serena off the project.

Steve:

She should. That was valid. Serena's too close to

Steve:

it for sure.

Leif:

Take your stupid high school games and get the

Leif:

fuck out.

Steve:

I also. I loved the line of, you're going to be

Steve:

talking even faster than you do in real life. For

Steve:

Aaron Sorkin writing it, I thought that was such a

Steve:

great. I love Aaron Sorkin. There are many shows

Steve:

that he's done that I think were fantastic. But

Steve:

the thing I've always loved about him is his

Steve:

mastery of dialogue and, uh, the way that he

Steve:

writes his characters so quick and witty. I

Steve:

actually was working on something with a friend

Steve:

that I was going to have a character in it named

Steve:

Aaron Sorkin. E R I N that her whole thing was

Steve:

going to be whenever she was on, she would just

Steve:

have a whole lot to say really fast and would just

Steve:

really quick, witty conversation anytime she came

Steve:

into the scene and then leave. But West Wing.

Leif:

Yeah, a lot of good stuff.

Steve:

Yeah. Sports radio. Not sports radio. What was it

Steve:

called?

Leif:

News radio.

Steve:

No, it wasn't. No, he didn't do news radio. It was

Steve:

a different show where it was a sports night. It

Steve:

was called Sports Night.

Leif:

Blair observes Jessica and Charlie's attempts to

Leif:

win Nate's affection and is impressed when Charlie

Leif:

makes, like, Justin Timberlake and causes a

Leif:

wardrobe malfunction for Jessica, knocking her out

Leif:

of the competition.

Steve:

It was really funny. And the way Charlie played

Steve:

this in every way was just kind of like, oh, I'll

Steve:

go with you. Okay. No, yeah, go right ahead.

Speaker C:

Voop.

Leif:

To be fair, her competition just aren't the

Leif:

brightest.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah, that's canon.

Leif:

They're minions for a reason.

Steve:

Yes. Although they do go to Colombia.

Leif:

Yeah. Because they're fucking Nepo babies.

Steve:

Oh, yeah. That was also true.

Leif:

Diana approaches Serena at the bar. Serena says

Leif:

she needs to kill the movie. Diana says she has a

Leif:

history with Jane and she can have it killed if

Leif:

Sarita wants it badly enough. And. And then walks

Leif:

over to Jane.

Steve:

Serena, you fucking dumbass.

Leif:

But also, Diana's a really shitty negotiator.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah.

Leif:

She says, how badly do you want it? And then just

Leif:

walks over and does it.

Steve:

Yeah, I'll do it. Even for nothing, apparently.

Leif:

Yeah. Like, she comes back. Oh, Serena would be

Leif:

like, I didn't really want it that much.

Steve:

It's not that big a deal.

Leif:

What do you think Diana, uh, told Jane to get her

Leif:

to kill it?

Steve:

Well, she says that they have history and that not

Steve:

all of it's good. So I'm assuming that she has

Steve:

some kind of dirt on Jane. It's probably something

Steve:

that is obviously.

Leif:

Do you have any speculation?

Steve:

Well, uh, my first guess. Well, I don't know.

Steve:

There's the thought of did she Harvey Weinstein

Steve:

someone? Does she have a casting couch history?

Steve:

Because it has to be something big enough that if

Steve:

it got out, it would be embarrassing to Jane.

Steve:

Right. So it has to be something big enough. Uh, I

Steve:

don't think Jane killed someone copyright stolen

Steve:

something. I think there's many different possible

Steve:

angles.

Leif:

Also, I had a thought. This episode when Diana

Leif:

didn't want her and Nate to go public. Could that

Leif:

possibly be because whoever is behind her didn't

Leif:

actually want her to be fucking Nate?

Steve:

Yeah, yeah, I had that thought that. Well, maybe.

Steve:

But they did set the whole thing up in motion at

Steve:

like they started this whole thing by her fucking

Steve:

Nate.

Leif:

Remember though, that was never part of the plan.

Steve:

Oh, okay.

Leif:

She wasn't supposed to meet him until she came

Leif:

back.

Steve:

Yeah, but she is the one that immediately fucked

Steve:

him. Yeah, like she was like, oh, he's here. We

Steve:

better start this thing early. I'm going to go

Steve:

bang this. I'm going to go bang this 20 year old.

Leif:

But was that part of the plan or not?

Steve:

I always assumed it was. I always. I know you did

Steve:

some kind of honey pot because I know you sand it.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

Oh.

Steve:

I mean, what could have been. I want to catch a

Steve:

Nate. I'm going to set a honey pot.

Leif:

I mean, you can set the honey pot without actually

Leif:

consummate.

Steve:

Yeah, without. Yeah, without dipping the honey

Steve:

into the. Dipping the wick into the honey. But

Steve:

she's not very good at this. I mean, once again,

Steve:

she's basing her media empire on a newspaper in

Steve:

2011.

Leif:

But again, it's hard to write smart characters if

Leif:

you're not a smart writer.

Steve:

That is a difficult thing for these writers

Steve:

sometimes.

Leif:

Charlie is watching Nate and Chuck talk across the

Leif:

room and is approached by Penelope who says she

Leif:

has given up. Charlie doesn't think that she's

Leif:

Nate's type and tells Penelope that Nate said she

Leif:

was the hottest girl at Constance. Penelope works

Leif:

up her courage and goes in for the kiss, but a

Leif:

confused Nate dodges her. She ends up in an

Leif:

embrace with a waiter and gets dismissed by Blair

Leif:

for consorting with the help. Louie just shakes

Leif:

his head at Blair's antics. Chuck, however, smiles

Leif:

in amusement before he sees Dr. Barnes enter the

Leif:

party.

Steve:

Yeah, Charlie, that was so beautiful. So well

Steve:

played. And Nate, the way he's like, whoa. And

Steve:

Penelope Uh, the choreography of this whole thing

Steve:

was perfect. The way she falls into the. The

Steve:

waiter's arms. It was. I loved it. I loved it.

Steve:

What did I say about consorting with the help?

Leif:

Dan asked Jane why she's leaving already, and she

Leif:

tells him it's because Serena had the movie

Leif:

killed.

Steve:

Not much really to say about that. It's. Yeah, she

Steve:

was pretty pissed that. Mhm. Her friend hosting

Steve:

this party just sold her out. Yeah.

Leif:

Diana begins her speech about the launch of the

Leif:

Spectator. Charlie dares Nate into kissing her to

Leif:

make his girl jealous. Blair raises her glass to

Leif:

Charlie from across the room. But Diana also sees

Leif:

the kiss, causing her to momentarily stumble. Her

Leif:

words, she continues, and gives fair warning that

Leif:

she plans on stealing the best staff from her

Leif:

competition.

Steve:

Did Blair notice Diana's reaction?

Leif:

I don't think so.

Steve:

Okay. There was, uh, the way that they edited

Steve:

that. There was a moment that I kind of thought

Steve:

that when Blair first looked over, I thought that

Steve:

she. Because it's right after she falters. Then

Steve:

Blair looks over, and I couldn't tell if it was

Steve:

just the editing, how it just turned out, if just

Steve:

Blair just noticed like that, but I couldn't tell

Steve:

if Blair was piecing that together too.

Leif:

I didn't get that. I think she was looking at

Leif:

Nate,

Steve:

and I think that that's how it resolved. It was

Steve:

her initial glance over. I thought that she. That

Steve:

was why she glanced. But then, like you said, then

Steve:

it was just all about Charlie. So I thought it was

Steve:

a little

Leif:

odd to me, uh, in that previous scene where

Leif:

Penelope gets eliminated, I think it's worth

Leif:

noting the difference of reactions between Louis

Leif:

and Chuck to the whole.

Steve:

To the scheming. Yeah, yeah. That Louis annoyed

Steve:

and Chuck is amused. Yeah, yeah, yeah. When you

Steve:

had actually mentioned that, which I didn't really

Steve:

pay attention to when I was watching it, but when

Steve:

you mentioned it.

Leif:

Well, because Chuck's, uh, expression quickly

Leif:

changes when he. When he sits, he sees Dr. Barnes

Leif:

enter the party. Yeah, but, like, it was kind of

Leif:

weird. You get the quick shot of Chuck, like,

Leif:

right after that, and he's like. He's, like,

Leif:

smiling. He's, like, smirking a little bit. And

Leif:

then he sees Barnes enter, and

Steve:

he's like, uh, where is she? Where's Dr. Barnes?

Leif:

Chuck steps forward and offers up the first story

Leif:

for the Spectator. His therapist has been trying

Leif:

to coerce him into unspeakable acts. Dr. Barnes

Leif:

steps forward to deny the accusation. Chuck then

Leif:

explains it's because Louie is paying her to do

Leif:

it.

Steve:

Yeah. I don't know why the sex Acts thing. Because

Steve:

you could have just come right out with the, uh,

Steve:

hey, this royal is paying my therapist.

Leif:

It wasn't sex acts. It was unspeakable acts.

Steve:

Oh, I thought he said hypnotized for unspeakable.

Steve:

Oh, I. I guess I assumed unspeakable acts or sex

Steve:

acts.

Leif:

I thought it was more just like, more abuse and

Leif:

getting angry and pissed off and causing issues.

Steve:

Oh, okay. Yeah, I. I guess I just looked into it

Steve:

as like he did at

Leif:

the end of last season. This is what Gossip Girl

Leif:

says, though. Don't worry be. You're still

Leif:

marrying a. Ah, Prince of fools.

Steve:

Gossip Girl. You do better. Do better. Gossip

Steve:

Girl. Lies was right there.

Leif:

Act 5. Louie chases Blair down outside the party

Leif:

and confesses that he found the paternity test. He

Leif:

explains that he needed her to see that Chuck

Leif:

would always be the wrong choice. Blair says that

Leif:

she and Chuck both know they can never work and

Leif:

that, uh, Louie should know it too. She knows

Leif:

Chuck will never change, but now she is scared

Leif:

Louie is changing into him.

Steve:

Um, yeah. Again, goes back to the.

Speaker C:

You.

Steve:

You hang around these people long enough, you

Steve:

become these people. And that's exactly what is

Steve:

happening to Louie. But also, I thought it was

Steve:

really funny when she's sitting there talking

Steve:

about Chuck. Chuck will always be like this. Chuck

Steve:

will never work. Chuck is always this. Chuck is

Steve:

always this. You're expecting there to be a

Steve:

cutaway to Chuck hearing her say all of these

Steve:

things? That is very classic tv. And they do that

Steve:

in Gossip Girl a lot, and they didn't. It was

Steve:

Blair speaking from her heart. This is. You're who

Steve:

I want, not him. And also the whole, like, oh, I

Steve:

found the paternity test.

Speaker C:

You.

Steve:

You are still trying to make a choice. And it's

Steve:

like, if that's the case, this is a few weeks ago,

Steve:

Louie. Like, this is. This is. This is old news

Steve:

now, Louie. So, like, yeah, calm the fuck down.

Steve:

It's yours. She's with you. You don't need to wor.

Steve:

Like, the more you worry about Chuck, the more you

Steve:

push her to Chuck.

Leif:

Yeah. Dan finds Serena and asks her why she killed

Leif:

the movie. Dan assumes she killed it because she

Leif:

didn't like her character in the book, but Serena

Leif:

corrects him and says this time she was looking

Leif:

out for his character. Way to go, Serena.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah.

Leif:

Road to Hell is paid with the best intentions.

Steve:

Yep. Yeah. And I mean, one of those big things

Steve:

here, like, you killed this movie. Instead of

Steve:

talking to Dan and being like, hey, this is what

Steve:

they want to do with your character. Are you Cool

Steve:

with it. If not, I'll kill it.

Leif:

To be fair, she was just kind of, like, talking

Leif:

about she needs to kill it. And then Diana just

Leif:

went and killed it.

Steve:

And then Diana just went and killed it. Yeah, that

Steve:

is true.

Leif:

Nate and Charlie are flirting when Diana walks

Leif:

over and blows up Charlie's spot. She lets the cat

Leif:

out of the bag by congratulating Charlie on

Leif:

winning Blair's competition, which immediately

Leif:

kills Nate's wood. Diana then surprises Charlie by

Leif:

revealing that she is Nate's girl. Nate is pissed

Leif:

at Charlie for using him, but Charlie is even more

Leif:

pissed he didn't tell her the person they were

Leif:

trying to make jealous was their boss.

Steve:

Yeah, that's kind of key information. Kind of key

Steve:

information there. Your boss that kind of hates

Steve:

her. That, you know. Yeah.

Leif:

But Nate lives in a world where endless jobs are

Leif:

just handed to him.

Steve:

And women, too, where endless jobs and. And a

Steve:

parade of women are always just available to him.

Leif:

We know Ivy lives in the real world.

Steve:

Yes. Yes.

Leif:

Chuck finds Dr. Barnes leaving the party and mocks

Leif:

her when she says she is closing her practice. He

Leif:

sobers a bit when she tells him that Louie not

Leif:

only paid her for information, but also to try to

Leif:

intentionally drive Chuck back to the person he

Leif:

used to be. She said he still has a chance to

Leif:

change, apologizes, and then returns the ring. I

Leif:

can ring a Sauron over here already.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah. Well, and again, like, the whole,

Steve:

like, give this to charity, and my thought was,

Steve:

like, you know, this could probably feed at least

Steve:

10 people, right? How much can one banana cost,

Steve:

Michael?

Leif:

See, when she gets to the ring and immediately

Leif:

texts Louis that the deal is off, I assume that's

Leif:

because she's going to give back Louise check. And

Leif:

then use the ring to solve her problem that she

Leif:

had undergone.

Steve:

Right, Right.

Leif:

But apparently, she did have a change of heart,

Leif:

and she's not a completely horrible person.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Leif:

And this is proof that even one of the worst

Leif:

therapists ever can still actually have a positive

Leif:

therapy.

Steve:

Still can still have a positive impact. Yes. Like,

Steve:

we've said all along that these people need

Steve:

therapy, and Chuck had shitty therapy, and he's

Steve:

already doing better.

Leif:

And, uh, they're definitely hammering that home.

Leif:

That he is a changed man.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

And Gossip Girl's final act break last says this.

Leif:

Spotted Chuck Bass standing at the crossroads.

Leif:

Looks like we're gonna have to watch his every

Leif:

step. We go into the epilogue. Diana finds Serena

Leif:

at the bar once again and presses her to write for

Leif:

the Spectator. Serena says she doesn't want to

Leif:

write a gossip column, but Diana convinces her by

Leif:

telling her that Serena can take down Gossip Girl

Leif:

and give her side of the story without spreading

Leif:

gossip. They make plans to meet in the office to

Leif:

brainstorm ideas.

Steve:

M. Honestly, Serena, I think this is kind of good

Steve:

for you. Doing a very positive blog would probably

Steve:

do a lot of good for you. Journaling, like,

Steve:

essentially, like, blog journaling. Yes, Serena.

Steve:

Like, you can really have your side of the story

Steve:

out there, and all attention is on you. It is all

Steve:

about you.

Leif:

I believe this is right around the time when,

Leif:

like, Goop was really getting popular. And then

Leif:

Blake Lively actually tried to do her own version

Leif:

of that.

Steve:

Oh, really?

Leif:

Yeah. Nate approaches Diana and gives her an

Leif:

ultimatum. They go public right now, or it's over.

Steve:

Or this relationship that is a real one that we're

Steve:

in is over.

Leif:

Blair is surprised to find Chuck waiting

Leif:

downstairs at her apartment. Chuck goes through a

Leif:

checklist of apologies for all his biggest

Leif:

transgressions. Blair thanks him, and he tells her

Leif:

she will be an amazing mother. Yeah. Nice scene.

Steve:

Yeah, this was nice.

Leif:

I thought they both well acted.

Steve:

Were well acted. I felt it was really sincere. I

Steve:

thought Blair was really moved by it. I loved how

Steve:

she walked in is like, what are you doing here?

Steve:

And then when he's like, I'm not apologizing for

Steve:

tonight. Like, I'm apologizing for all of this

Steve:

other stuff, which he never has given her an

Steve:

apology, so it's a good step. Chuck.

Leif:

Problem is this is a season too late.

Steve:

Yeah. Yes.

Leif:

They should have. If they're not gonna kill him at

Leif:

the end of season three. This should have been the

Leif:

season. The beginning of season four storyline

Leif:

for.

Steve:

Yes. Yes. Agreed.

Leif:

They waited a whole season too long.

Steve:

Yes. Yeah. They had to. They had to make him so

Steve:

much worse that they're just. And which is also

Steve:

kind of what's annoying me about this new glow up.

Steve:

Because it's at least the third glow up of Chuck.

Steve:

So I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop,

Steve:

you know, it seems. Wow. Yeah, he's really

Steve:

changing. It's really sincere. Yeah.

Leif:

Uh, it would hate for another mother to show up

Leif:

and. Yeah, I would wreck his new outlook on life.

Steve:

That really would be annoying. That would be. That

Steve:

would be really bad writing and some really shitty

Steve:

plot development. I really hope that doesn't

Steve:

happen.

Leif:

Dan arrives home to find Rufus waiting with bad

Leif:

news. His book dropped off next week's bestseller

Leif:

list.

Steve:

I love that. I loved that Dan had all this success

Steve:

and it just kind of disappeared. And then Rufus is

Steve:

like, well, now that Aaron Sorkin's Writing it, It

Steve:

should just jump right back to the top. And he's

Steve:

like, there's not gonna be a movie. Movie.

Leif:

Dang.

Steve:

And that's one of those things that. That, like,

Steve:

Robin made the comment of, like, just take the

Steve:

movie somewhere else. And it's like, you can't.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

Like, if that sign.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

If there's a contract, they've got 10 years to

Steve:

make that movie, so it'll be at least 10. I think

Steve:

that's the. The way that those laws work. They

Steve:

have. That they own.

Leif:

I think that's usually negotiated as part of the

Leif:

contract. The length.

Steve:

Yeah, they basically have the rights to that. I

Steve:

believe that there's, uh, Like a cap. Yeah. You're

Steve:

kind of fucked. Serena really screwed you over on

Steve:

this, Dan.

Leif:

Yeah. The deal is also. Usually you get a certain

Leif:

amount to buy it, and then a certain, um. And then

Leif:

you get more if it actually gets made.

Steve:

Yeah. A lot of people I've known, people that just

Steve:

write a screenplay and sell it, and what gets made

Steve:

isn't the screenplay that they wrote, even because

Steve:

they give it to some other writer to work it over.

Leif:

Charlie goes to Diana's office to apologize for

Leif:

kissing Nate. She had no idea they were involved.

Leif:

Diana wants Charlie and the rest of the world to

Leif:

know that Nate is hers. She spins the monitor

Leif:

around, revealing the new top story on the

Leif:

Spectator. Nate and Diana are officially a couple.

Leif:

She then once again threatens to out Charlie's

Leif:

real identity if she crosses the line.

Steve:

Charlie wasn't into Nate. Well, I mean, like I

Steve:

said, she noticed Nate, I felt. But she was

Steve:

getting this story. And for Diana to be like,

Steve:

nate's mine. It's like, lady, you're 20 years

Steve:

older than this kid.

Leif:

What the fuck? She's sad.

Steve:

Sad.

Leif:

Ah, and pathetic.

Steve:

Sad and pathetic with your media empire.

Leif:

She announces her own relationship on the website.

Steve:

Yeah, on her website that she's announcing that

Steve:

she's banging her top employee.

Leif:

Is it her top employee or just an intern?

Steve:

Well, yeah, her best intern. Well, at least best

Steve:

at, uh, dicking her.

Leif:

But Nate's gonna have to borrow Serena's blue

Leif:

dress.

Speaker C:

Oh.

Leif:

Oh.

Steve:

Cigars.

Leif:

Serena is sitting on, uh, in bed, on her laptop

Leif:

and begins writing her blog titled S by S. Good

Leif:

job, Serena. Did you pause and read it?

Steve:

No, I. I read some of it as she was.

Leif:

As it flashed, but it's very high school essay. It

Leif:

says, people in New York love to gossip, but most

Leif:

of the time, they don't know what they're talking

Leif:

about. That's why I want to clear the air that's

Leif:

kind of where it.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Yeah, I did read that. Yes.

Leif:

But yeah, I mean, very high school essay.

Steve:

What do you expect from Serena Vanderwood

Leif:

clearly laying out her thesis?

Steve:

Yes. Yeah. Did you learn how to write like that at

Steve:

Columbia? Serena?

Leif:

Blair is alone on her couch and gets a call from

Leif:

Louis apologizing that he has to go on a trip for.

Leif:

For a few days. But Blair thinks a few days apart

Leif:

might be good for them.

Steve:

Yeah. Blair's pissed at you, Louie. With good

Steve:

cause.

Leif:

Mhm.

Steve:

Now that all of this is out, what Louie did is the

Steve:

most up thing. One of maybe like top three most up

Steve:

things someone has done on this show. To go and

Steve:

pay a therapist to someone up to pay someone's

Steve:

therapist to ruin their progress is monstrous. It

Steve:

is monstrous.

Leif:

And like, edges kind of waved away.

Steve:

Yeah. And everyone's like, they're a little bit

Leif:

pissed off, but yeah. Uh, they're probably just

Leif:

gonna get over it next week.

Steve:

Yeah. Well, exactly. And I'm glad that Blair at

Steve:

least at the end is like, we need time apart.

Steve:

Like, I'm glad that she at least is sort of

Steve:

punishing him for it. But it really is like, aside

Steve:

from Chuck assaulting people on a few occasions,

Steve:

this might be the most. Or Lily sending someone to

Steve:

jail for five.

Leif:

For a few years. Agnes as well. Drugging Jenny and

Leif:

dropping her off at the bachelor party.

Steve:

Yes. Yeah. Agnes drugging Jenny might. Might be

Steve:

number one.

Leif:

Georgina also roofied Serena.

Steve:

Yes, yes. So there's been two instances of

Steve:

roofing. There's been two instances of sexual

Steve:

assault. And three. Three. Uh, are you.

Leif:

I'm counting episode 420.

Steve:

Okay. Which I was just. I was about to say. And

Steve:

one just assault.

Leif:

But he tries to grab her and kiss her though, so

Leif:

he does.

Steve:

You're right. You're right, he does. So three

Steve:

instances of sexual assault and. And then Lily

Steve:

sending a man to jail for a few years who belong,

Steve:

uh, who deserved to get fired. Like someone who

Steve:

wasn't super innocent but

Leif:

did go to jail for something he technically didn't

Leif:

do.

Steve:

For something he technically didn't do. But like,

Steve:

Louis is up there paying someone's therapist to

Steve:

ruin their progress is monstrous.

Leif:

You're not wrong. And in the final scene, Chuck

Leif:

walks up to Harry Winston Inc. In the middle of

Leif:

the night and reverently leaves the ring on the

Leif:

doorstep.

Steve:

Chuck, they have hours. You could get at least,

Steve:

I'm sure a partial refund for that.

Leif:

But I like how he puts it down on the step. He

Leif:

taps it. He's so reverent towards tucking it in.

Steve:

Good night, sweet prince.

Leif:

On, uh, the streets of New York. Someone's not

Leif:

gonna just come and grab that, Right?

Steve:

Well, and someone's gonna go pay off their

Steve:

mortgage with this ring. And, uh, yeah, it was.

Steve:

Yeah, that just cracked me up. And the other side

Steve:

of it is, like, he puts that there, and, you know,

Steve:

he probably could go in and return it and get

Steve:

something. Although he probably also has it

Steve:

insured so it's not picked up. It's like, oh, this

Steve:

ring was stolen. Yeah, stolen. And the poor guy

Steve:

who, like, picked up a random wedding ring goes to

Steve:

jail. Or engagement ring.

Leif:

Uh, this is Gossip Girl's final monologue of the

Leif:

episode. They say every road comes to an end, but

Leif:

sometimes the end feels just like the beginning.

Leif:

Even when you think you've come a long way, you

Leif:

can suddenly find yourself right back where you

Leif:

started. Because every journey is fraught with

Leif:

twists and turns, and one false step could spell

Leif:

disaster. But no matter what, you still have to

Leif:

stay the course and forge your own path, because

Leif:

there is no going back now. And it looks like this

Leif:

one is going to be the ride of our lives. Xo xo

Leif:

Gossip Girl. That is our episode. What's coming

Leif:

next?

Steve:

Well, Blair and Louie are gonna have some tension,

Steve:

but they're gonna work it out because we're

Steve:

waiting for that wedding for them to break up.

Steve:

Chuck is going to try to convince me that he's a

Steve:

good guy now, and I feel like the show is going to

Steve:

try to convince me that for a little bit. But

Steve:

there's also this whole Diana storyline that needs

Steve:

to unwrap as well. The Chuck Diana shit is just

Steve:

taking another step. I think that Charlie and Nate

Steve:

are going to become a thing and really make Diana

Steve:

mad, which could lead to Ivy being outed. But I

Steve:

think we've got time before Ivy's outed. And

Steve:

honestly, I think Ivy gets outed when Diana brings

Steve:

the real Charlie to New York. If there is a real

Steve:

Charlie that I would assume. I assume, Char, Diana

Steve:

is going to be the one to out Charlie, right?

Steve:

Because she's the one that has the info. And I

Steve:

think the best way to do it would be bring in the

Steve:

real Charlie. So that was just. I just thought of

Steve:

that right now. But I don't think that things are

Steve:

over with inside. I think that we're going to see

Steve:

something else come up of this with Dan. I think

Steve:

that unless they're just moving on from that story

Steve:

altogether, but I feel like it was too big.

Leif:

I, uh, will reveal that Jane and Dr. Barnes. This

Leif:

is the last we see of them.

Steve:

Okay. I actually kind of figured Jane's part was

Steve:

done. I wasn't sure about Dr. Barnes, but it makes

Steve:

sense for her to be done. I kind of thought that

Steve:

Chuck was going to go back to her and be like,

Steve:

hey, you know what? Now that you were honest with

Steve:

me, no bullshit, whatever, but because I really

Steve:

would like Chuck to continue therapy. I think

Steve:

that's good for Chuck.

Leif:

Yeah. Ah.

Steve:

But I think that inside was too big of a plot

Steve:

point, that too many plot points of that haven't

Steve:

been resolved yet. The Nate thing hasn't really

Steve:

been settled with Nate's feelings about it. I feel

Steve:

like there's more up in the air about it.

Leif:

Blair still hasn't read the whole thing.

Steve:

Blair still has not read the whole book. Uh, which

Steve:

I think she'll do before the wedding. So, yeah,

Steve:

she's taking time apart from Louis for a few days.

Steve:

She's got time to read. Uh, I believe those are my

Steve:

predictions.

Leif:

Yeah. Louie will be absent from the next episode.

Steve:

Oh, good. I'm over the Grimaldis at this point.

Leif:

Any updates on your prediction on who stays

Leif:

longer, Louis or Diana?

Steve:

I think Diana. I feel like Diana is going to be

Steve:

in, um, for a while now. I think Louis, I think

Steve:

that the wedding is probably around episode 11. I

Steve:

think that that's my guess, just based on our

Steve:

conversations. That being the point where people

Steve:

are like, fuck this show. I feel like that's the

Steve:

wedding. I feel like the wedding episode. A few

Steve:

things are going to happen. I feel like that's

Steve:

when they're going to get rid of this baby. I feel

Steve:

like that's when they're going to get.

Leif:

The miscarriage is going to happen at the wedding

Leif:

or.

Steve:

Or right before. Or, uh, within. Within an

Steve:

episode. Either one before or that episode is

Steve:

going to blow everything up.

Leif:

So she's going to have the miscarriage and they're

Leif:

still going to get married.

Steve:

I think that they're.

Leif:

I think they're still going to attempt to get

Leif:

married.

Steve:

I think they're going to attempt to. And then be

Steve:

like, well, no, this isn't going to. I think I

Steve:

feel like it's going to be a leave at the altar

Steve:

thing. That she's going to be there and be like,

Steve:

well known. This isn't what I want anymore. I do

Steve:

think it'll be Blair who will call it off.

Leif:

So zero chance they actually get married.

Steve:

I do not think they'll actually get married, nor

Steve:

do I think that baby is making it to the second

Steve:

trimester.

Leif:

And do you still have any thought that it could be

Leif:

Chuck's?

Steve:

No, no. Uh, now that Louis has seen the. Has seen

Steve:

the report, it's quite solidly. Louis.

Leif:

Well, you said before you didn't think Blair had

Leif:

even opened it.

Steve:

Yeah, I wasn't sure if Blair had even opened it.

Steve:

That it was ripped up still and taped up the way

Steve:

it was. I wasn't convinced she had, but now I am.

Steve:

Now. Now I feel like that has all been resolved.

Leif:

Fair enough. Let's get into segments. Hello there.

Leif:

Peabody here. And this is the Wayback Machine for

Leif:

traveling through time. And this is my boy,

Leif:

Sherman.

Steve:

Speak, Sherman. Hello.

Leif:

Good boy. This week in Fandome, we jumped in the

Leif:

Wayback Machine to travel to the Television

Leif:

without pity forums from 2011. Their overall

Leif:

impression. This was another filler episode.

Steve:

Yeah. And I mean, some important stuff happened.

Steve:

The movie stuff I think is important to the plot

Steve:

and the Chuck Therapy thing. I. In fact, I would

Steve:

argue it wasn't a filler episode, but felt like a

Steve:

filler episode. It was. I felt like it wasn't

Steve:

meant to be, but just is because it wasn't very

Steve:

good.

Leif:

What's with this shitty parody of Blair?

Steve:

I thought that it was just a throwback to earlier

Steve:

seasons, but.

Leif:

Yeah, we don't want Blair to regress to what she

Leif:

was in high school.

Steve:

Yeah. I just felt like it was an homage, like a

Steve:

throwback. I wasn't. I wasn't upset with it. I get

Steve:

it. I get your point. I get their point. I just

Steve:

wasn't bothered by it.

Leif:

Positive vibes for Ivy as a character. Comparisons

Leif:

to Jenny before Tyler Mumpson took over.

Steve:

Wow.

Leif:

Rude. So season one and two, Jenny.

Steve:

Yes. No lies. No lies detected. I also, I agree. I

Steve:

think that. I think that Charlie. Ivy. Charlie is

Steve:

fitting in really well. I think that she's really

Steve:

come into her role really well.

Leif:

She is definitely kind of filling that Jenny sweet

Leif:

spot. Not as good as Jenny, but just diet Jenny.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah, Jenny Light.

Leif:

They hope the writers will stick with the Chuck

Leif:

redemption line this time. Um, really like the

Leif:

apology scene.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah, I really like the apology scene and

Steve:

I've been saying the same thing. I'm tired of

Steve:

Chuck glow ups. So if they can keep him up, great.

Steve:

But I'm worried about the carpet getting pulled

Steve:

out from under us again. Is he going to object at

Steve:

the wedding or some shit? That is the fucking

Steve:

course he is.

Leif:

Uh, of fucking course he is disappointed that

Leif:

there's back to back episodes with no movement on

Leif:

the dare front.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah. Get them back in each other.

Leif:

There's a lot more Chuck, Blair and Dan Serena

Leif:

movement this episode.

Steve:

Yes. And we all want everyone but Robin wants the

Steve:

dare. The dare progression.

Leif:

But finally, many people still believe the baby is

Leif:

Chuck's.

Steve:

I mean, like, I can see it, but except for the

Steve:

fact that Louis saw the thing. Louis read it.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

I don't think Blair doctored it. I don't think she

Steve:

changed it. I think that she put it in a drawer to

Steve:

forget about it.

Leif:

It would have been mentioned.

Steve:

Mhm.

Leif:

If it was jocks.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

That is it for this week in fandom. Moving over to

Leif:

episode grades. It is my week to go first. I

Leif:

agreed with them. This was kind of a filler

Leif:

episode. Nothing too special, but wasn't horrible.

Leif:

So right down the middle. I gave it a C. Yep.

Steve:

Yeah, I'm. I'm right there with you. I didn't hate

Steve:

it. I chuckled a few times. Right down the middle.

Steve:

Not one of their best. Definitely not their worst.

Leif:

Moving over to Stockwatch. Going up. Not a lot

Leif:

going up for me, just Chuck for appearing to be

Leif:

moving on the right path at the moment at least.

Leif:

So I gave him up. And Nate for finally kind of

Leif:

standing up for himself a little bit. And he got

Leif:

to kiss Charlie as well. So those are my two ups.

Steve:

Yeah, I was going to do Chuck as well for just

Steve:

throughout the episode. Chuck, you know that. That

Steve:

apology at the end. Chuck doing a decent

Steve:

redemption arc. I also wanted to give up to Nate

Steve:

because he in the end, the boss admitted that

Steve:

she's banging him, everybody. I also wanted to

Steve:

give it to Ivy because she did manage to get into

Steve:

Blair's wedding party. She won the competition and

Steve:

she got to make out with cutie Nate. So I'm going

Steve:

to go ahead and give Charlie the up. And also I'm

Steve:

going to give the up to the secretary for the

Steve:

first time. The first secretary to get a plus for

Steve:

owning Nate for being in media and not knowing

Steve:

that his boss in media was banging another media

Steve:

guy, another media mogul.

Leif:

So I had Ivy slash Charlie as neutral because she

Leif:

just barely continues to walk the line. So I. I'm

Leif:

keeping her new. She's walking that line. I. I

Leif:

accept walking that line.

Steve:

I accept that I feel like she is walking that

Steve:

line, but I feel like she is just one. I feel like

Steve:

she is always just one step above the line right

Steve:

now. So that's where I gave where I fell for

Steve:

Rufus.

Leif:

I also had neutral because Matt settles no longer

Leif:

getting good directing. So I couldn't tell if he's

Leif:

being generally supportive for Dan or if he's

Leif:

gloating.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Leif:

Because we also never really got the apology

Leif:

scene. We saw him calling Dan, but we never got

Leif:

the resolution.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

We never saw them make up and see what the

Leif:

resolution was.

Steve:

Yeah. So Rufus is sitting here like, oh, your

Steve:

fucking movie. That's a shame. Oh, it's a shame

Steve:

that your shitty book isn't getting turned into a

Steve:

shitty movie about me.

Leif:

Oh, you were number nine. I was number eight.

Steve:

I was number eight. So that by math, that makes me

Steve:

one better than you, Hasan.

Leif:

But going down. Speaking of Dan, I have him going

Leif:

down because he lost his movie.

Steve:

Yep. Dan lost his movie deal.

Leif:

Serena going down because she caused it.

Steve:

Yep.

Leif:

Jane, because she also lost the movie. Dr. Barnes

Leif:

for being a horrible, thorough and an ah,

Leif:

unethical therapist. Louis, for being a full on

Leif:

villain.

Steve:

Mhm.

Leif:

And Diana for the. AKA the new Vanessa.

Steve:

She just.

Leif:

Just being horrible.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

For just being horrible.

Steve:

Just being horrible and being on this show where

Steve:

you don't belong. Yes, you are terrible. And yeah,

Steve:

be gone.

Leif:

Who do you got going down?

Steve:

My list, I believe is exactly the same, only I'm

Steve:

also gonna add the minions because all three of

Steve:

them failed out of Blair's wedding.

Leif:

Okay.

Steve:

But yeah, Diana, Dr. Barnes, Jane, Dan, Serena,

Steve:

Louis.

Leif:

Um.

Steve:

Um. Diana. I'm going to leave Blair neutral. I

Steve:

think that's it for me. Yeah.

Leif:

I actually meant to put Blair going down.

Steve:

Oh.

Leif:

Because I thought she was just ridiculous the

Leif:

whole episode. She needs to grow up.

Steve:

I was fine. I didn't mind it. I get it. I get

Steve:

where you're coming from.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Leif:

I think her arc is to get beyond just being pure

Leif:

scheming.

Steve:

Yeah. I agree. She'll get there.

Leif:

That part of Louis actually kind of agreed with.

Steve:

Yeah. But here's the best outfits from the last

Steve:

episode we've seen.

Leif:

Moving to best outfit, for me, it was Serena's

Leif:

blue dress with the matching earrings and hair

Leif:

tie.

Steve:

Yes. The

Leif:

one shoulder mini dress.

Steve:

Uh, it was the. Hold on. I actually looked this

Steve:

one up because I liked it so much. Uh, the

Steve:

Thornton Brigaze. It was, uh. Yeah, it was. I'm

Steve:

sorry. It was called Preen by Thornton Berghazi.

Steve:

Was what I found the blue dress that she wore. And

Steve:

I had the same one. It was actually maybe my

Steve:

favorite dress Serena has had so far on this show.

Leif:

Definitely in a while.

Steve:

Yeah, it's been a while. And. And it was just very

Steve:

pretty and very elegant and I thought it. And I

Steve:

thought it looked great on her. Yeah.

Leif:

That is it for segments. Do you have anything you

Leif:

would like to plug?

Steve:
