Speaker:

(upbeat music)

Speaker:

- Good morning, Springhouse.

Speaker:

It's a chilly day, just a little bit,

Speaker:

but it's also Tennessee, so that shouldn't surprise you.

Speaker:

But it's a good day to be in the house of the Lord.

Speaker:

Are you glad you're here today?

Speaker:

I sure am glad you're here as well.

Speaker:

If you're joining us on live stream,

Speaker:

thank you for joining us too.

Speaker:

I got one announcement for us today

Speaker:

before we get kicking and rolling.

Speaker:

Next Sunday, next Sunday,

Speaker:

we are gonna have a newcomers luncheon here in the foyer,

Speaker:

or in the fellowship, is it in fellowship hall?

Speaker:

Fellowship hall.

Speaker:

And we would like to invite you to come

Speaker:

if you are one of the newer families to the church.

Speaker:

Our pastoral team will be there.

Speaker:

We'd like to meet you,

Speaker:

wanna tell you a little bit about our different ministries

Speaker:

here at the church and introduce ourselves

Speaker:

and just get to know you a little bit.

Speaker:

And also just explain to you how our communication processes

Speaker:

work and answer any questions you might have

Speaker:

about the church.

Speaker:

Now, if you're somebody and you've brought a new person

Speaker:

and maybe you've been coming with them or whatnot,

Speaker:

you can sign up as well and come with them

Speaker:

so they don't have to come alone.

Speaker:

That's totally fine.

Speaker:

But we do want you to register

Speaker:

so I don't have to share my sandwich with you, okay?

Speaker:

So if you'll register on the church app,

Speaker:

the way you do that out in the foyer,

Speaker:

there are placards with a QR code.

Speaker:

You can register there.

Speaker:

Sign up for the church center and sign up through that

Speaker:

and register, but that will be next week

Speaker:

immediately following this gathering, okay?

Speaker:

So I want you to be a part of that.

Speaker:

All right, we're actually now officially starting

Speaker:

the third part of a three-part series for the year.

Speaker:

We have unofficially started it for the last two weeks.

Speaker:

We're officially starting it now.

Speaker:

But we're going to go into the section

Speaker:

that talks about his church.

Speaker:

And I'm very excited about what the rest of this year holds,

Speaker:

mainly because he's in control of it.

Speaker:

The Holy Spirit wants to speak to our hearts

Speaker:

and speak to our lives.

Speaker:

And so, and any time the Holy Spirit gets involved,

Speaker:

we ought to be excited about what he's doing.

Speaker:

So if you'll stand with me,

Speaker:

we're gonna read from the book of Colossians this morning.

Speaker:

And I would like you to read this like you're yelling

Speaker:

for your favorite sports team this morning, okay?

Speaker:

All right, here we go.

Speaker:

He is the image of the invisible God,

Speaker:

the firstborn of all creation.

Speaker:

For by him all things were created,

Speaker:

both in the heavens and on earth,

Speaker:

visible and invisible,

Speaker:

whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities.

Speaker:

All things have been created through him and for him.

Speaker:

He is before all things and in him all things hold together.

Speaker:

He is also the head of the body, the church.

Speaker:

And he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead,

Speaker:

so that he himself will come to have first place

Speaker:

in everything.

Speaker:

For it was the Father's good pleasure

Speaker:

for all the fullness to dwell in him

Speaker:

and through him to reconcile all things to himself,

Speaker:

whether things on earth or things in heaven,

Speaker:

having made peace through the blood of his cross.

Speaker:

Father, I thank you for such loud readers this morning.

Speaker:

I thank you for the gift of your salvation,

Speaker:

God, the gift of your son.

Speaker:

I pray, Lord, that you would help your word this morning

Speaker:

just transform our hearts, God.

Speaker:

I pray for any of my nonsense to fall to the ground,

Speaker:

but anything, Lord, that you have for us

Speaker:

to stick and remain and change us.

Speaker:

In Jesus' name, amen.

Speaker:

Amen, amen, amen.

Speaker:

Well, we started this year out talking about his word,

Speaker:

talking about his word.

Speaker:

Now, I pray and hope, it would be my hope,

Speaker:

that you are in the word of God every single day,

Speaker:

that you have an active relationship with the word of God.

Speaker:

Is anybody still following the five by five by five

Speaker:

Bible reading plan?

Speaker:

Raise your hand.

Speaker:

Okay, good, across the church.

Speaker:

Now, some of you may say, you know,

Speaker:

I'm not following that plan,

Speaker:

but I'm following my own plan.

Speaker:

Good, I'm glad that you are reading the word daily.

Speaker:

Some of you may say, well, I missed it,

Speaker:

and I'm not reading, and I guess I need to wait till 2025.

Speaker:

No, you can start today.

Speaker:

You haven't been promised 2025,

Speaker:

so start now, start today.

Speaker:

We unearthed and unpackaged about Jesus being the way,

Speaker:

the truth, and the life.

Speaker:

We find the truth in his word,

Speaker:

and so an active relationship with the word

Speaker:

is essential to the believer's walk.

Speaker:

And so I pray that you have an active relationship

Speaker:

with the word of God.

Speaker:

After we talked about his word, we talked about his life.

Speaker:

And who are we talking about when we say his?

Speaker:

We're talking about Jesus.

Speaker:

We're not talking about a random guy.

Speaker:

We're talking about Jesus.

Speaker:

So Jesus' word and Jesus' life,

Speaker:

and we examined how Jesus treated people.

Speaker:

We examined how Jesus listened and obeyed his Father.

Speaker:

We looked at Jesus' emotional state

Speaker:

whenever he was travailing in the garden

Speaker:

before having to go to the cross.

Speaker:

We looked at Jesus die on the cross,

Speaker:

and we celebrated a resurrected Savior,

Speaker:

and we celebrate that same resurrected Savior today.

Speaker:

He is sitting at the right hand of God, hallelujah, amen.

Speaker:

And we have access to this God.

Speaker:

And so now we're going to talk about Jesus' church,

Speaker:

the church of Jesus Christ.

Speaker:

And he has a lot to say about his church.

Speaker:

And one of the first things that we need to understand

Speaker:

about his church is that when we talk about his church,

Speaker:

we're not talking about this facility,

Speaker:

this building, this structure.

Speaker:

You're the church.

Speaker:

You are the church.

Speaker:

The church is not the building.

Speaker:

It's the people.

Speaker:

So when I went to the Lord, and I was like,

Speaker:

okay, Lord, we're gonna be doing this series.

Speaker:

You told me to do this series,

Speaker:

and we're here on this part about your church, God.

Speaker:

Where do you want me to start?

Speaker:

Where do you want us to begin?

Speaker:

'Cause there's a lot we could say about his church.

Speaker:

It could start with the history of the church.

Speaker:

We could talk about his encounter with Peter

Speaker:

and how he said he was gonna build his church

Speaker:

upon this rock.

Speaker:

We could talk a lot about how church functions.

Speaker:

We talk about Ephesians 4.

Speaker:

There's a lot we can talk about.

Speaker:

There's a lot we're going to talk about.

Speaker:

Do you know where you start is real important?

Speaker:

Where you begin is really important.

Speaker:

Anybody here like to cook?

Speaker:

Yeah, I'm not very good at it, but I like to cook.

Speaker:

I'll tell you what, when I cook macaroni and cheese,

Speaker:

I don't put non-boiled noodles on the plate

Speaker:

and then put the cheese in the pan.

Speaker:

There's an order to cooking a dish and making it right.

Speaker:

You start somewhere.

Speaker:

Anybody like building puzzles?

Speaker:

Any puzzle builders here?

Speaker:

Okay, when you build a puzzle,

Speaker:

I personally like to start with those outer pieces,

Speaker:

the pieces that kind of hug the edges

Speaker:

because they're easy for me to find.

Speaker:

So you start there and you build upon where you started.

Speaker:

It's hard for me to start with that thousand piece puzzle

Speaker:

with the puzzle piece that's completely one color,

Speaker:

one solid color.

Speaker:

It goes in the middle somewhere.

Speaker:

I need to start somewhere where it makes sense.

Speaker:

And so where I start is important.

Speaker:

One of the things that I have done in the past

Speaker:

that really bothers me is,

Speaker:

have you ever been driving somewhere

Speaker:

and you're at your starting point,

Speaker:

but you've got maybe a lot on your mind or whatever

Speaker:

and you end up driving in the wrong direction?

Speaker:

I used to work at Hickory Hollow Mall

Speaker:

when it was a mall at Chick-fil-A

Speaker:

and then I worked for four years

Speaker:

at Murfreesboro's Chick-fil-A.

Speaker:

And for a good six months,

Speaker:

when I would get on Sam Ridley and go to work,

Speaker:

I would go toward Nashville

Speaker:

as opposed to getting off the interstate

Speaker:

and going toward Murfreesboro

Speaker:

because I was in the habit of going toward Nashville.

Speaker:

I hated that because I had to go

Speaker:

all the way down to Walden Road,

Speaker:

get off the interstate and turn around.

Speaker:

You know that whenever you go the wrong direction,

Speaker:

what's interesting about that

Speaker:

is when you go the wrong direction and you turn around,

Speaker:

you gotta go back the direction from which you came.

Speaker:

All of that stuff, I get to see the same trees

Speaker:

and the same things I pass, I get to see them again.

Speaker:

And sometimes that's what the Lord does with us.

Speaker:

When we start going down the wrong direction,

Speaker:

when we turn around,

Speaker:

He'll have us kind of walk through that stuff going back

Speaker:

because He wants to train us

Speaker:

and teach us some things in that.

Speaker:

But the starting point is important.

Speaker:

Had I started getting on the interstate at the right place,

Speaker:

I would get to my destination a lot quicker, right?

Speaker:

And so where do we start?

Speaker:

When we're talking about His church,

Speaker:

it's the Lord, where should Springhouse Church,

Speaker:

we're talking about this, where should we start?

Speaker:

And He gave me something,

Speaker:

and I believe this is where we need to start this series

Speaker:

for the rest of this year.

Speaker:

We need to know it's not about you.

Speaker:

It's not about you.

Speaker:

It's not about me, and it's not about you.

Speaker:

This is my daughter, Nora.

Speaker:

Nora is my fourth daughter, and she,

Speaker:

we have four daughters,

Speaker:

and when we have birthday parties in our house,

Speaker:

we do a birthday dinner.

Speaker:

And at the birthday dinner,

Speaker:

the kids all bring a small gift

Speaker:

for the birthday girl at the time.

Speaker:

And then we speak over, we speak blessings over our children

Speaker:

when it's their birthday.

Speaker:

And so we have a whole routine,

Speaker:

and every single birthday that is not Nora's birthday,

Speaker:

Nora says, "Well, Daddy, I wish I had a cake.

Speaker:

"Daddy, I sure do wish I had a present today.

Speaker:

"Daddy, I sure do wish that you would speak nice words

Speaker:

"over me today," right?

Speaker:

It's because Nora has made that day about her.

Speaker:

And children, immature children especially,

Speaker:

tend to make things about themselves.

Speaker:

Immature Christians make the church about themselves.

Speaker:

Immature Christians will jump from church to church

Speaker:

to church to church until they find something

Speaker:

that suits them until it doesn't suit them anymore,

Speaker:

and then they will jump some more.

Speaker:

Immature Christians, immature believers,

Speaker:

will not lean in to anything more or less than themselves.

Speaker:

And church, the Lord has called us to move and graduate

Speaker:

from drinkers of milk to eaters of meat.

Speaker:

And so as mature believers,

Speaker:

there's an understanding that it is countercultural,

Speaker:

but the church is not about us.

Speaker:

It's not about us.

Speaker:

And so we have to start here

Speaker:

in order for us to build the foundation,

Speaker:

because if I put any ingredient of myself

Speaker:

in the foundation of the church,

Speaker:

then that lessens the focus on Christ.

Speaker:

And we don't want to,

Speaker:

I do not want to lessen the focus of Christ.

Speaker:

I don't wanna lessen the focus of Christ.

Speaker:

His church and the observations that we make

Speaker:

about his church around the world,

Speaker:

it is just staggering how many places we see

Speaker:

that program is elevated above presence.

Speaker:

Anytime program is elevated above presence,

Speaker:

God doesn't want anything to do with it.

Speaker:

He won't have anything to do with it.

Speaker:

But when you elevate his presence above all else,

Speaker:

he will infiltrate all things, all lives,

Speaker:

and you will start to see God move

Speaker:

in supernatural, extraordinary ways.

Speaker:

The world centers on self, the church centers on Christ.

Speaker:

The world centers on itself, the church centers on Christ.

Speaker:

You know, one of the things, and I've said this before,

Speaker:

and I hope that I'm able to give this back

Speaker:

to whomever's next in even a more abundant form,

Speaker:

though I don't know how much more I could do

Speaker:

than he has done,

Speaker:

but one of the greatest gifts Pastor Ronnie has given me

Speaker:

in the transition of me being lead pastor here

Speaker:

is the fact that he shows up and he supports me.

Speaker:

He's there, I see him.

Speaker:

He is very present,

Speaker:

and I appreciate his presence and his support.

Speaker:

And we were at lunch this past week,

Speaker:

and I don't think he reminds me of sharing this,

Speaker:

but we were at lunch this past week,

Speaker:

and he said, "You know, I'm in Springhouse.

Speaker:

"There'd virtually be two reasons

Speaker:

"why you probably wouldn't see me there anymore."

Speaker:

And the first reason would be

Speaker:

if the church became about money.

Speaker:

And the second reason is if the church

Speaker:

would elevate the pastor above Christ.

Speaker:

And thankfully, we are close to neither extreme,

Speaker:

but when I drove away from that lunch,

Speaker:

you know, I thought,

Speaker:

I wouldn't wanna pastor that church.

Speaker:

I would not wanna pastor a church

Speaker:

that was catering to money

Speaker:

or catering to elevating the pastor.

Speaker:

The church is about elevating Christ Jesus.

Speaker:

The church is about elevating Christ Jesus.

Speaker:

And so when we look over at Exodus chapter 33,

Speaker:

Moses has gone up the mountain,

Speaker:

and he's gone to get the 10 commandments.

Speaker:

He's gone to meet with God.

Speaker:

And the people are down below, the Israelites,

Speaker:

and they are worshiping Almighty God.

Speaker:

They're worshiping Almighty God,

Speaker:

and he's left Aaron in charge.

Speaker:

And they are doing all of the programs.

Speaker:

They're doing all of the things.

Speaker:

They've got the guitar instruments, the lights.

Speaker:

They got the music.

Speaker:

They've got everything that would make

Speaker:

an excellent worship service.

Speaker:

They got community.

Speaker:

They got a church.

Speaker:

And all of a sudden, the presence of God is not enough.

Speaker:

And so they began to collect their gold,

Speaker:

and they fashioned out of that gold a calf.

Speaker:

And they started to worship this idol, this calf.

Speaker:

In Exodus 33, we read, why?

Speaker:

Moses is meeting with God.

Speaker:

So Moses comes down the mountain,

Speaker:

and he says, what is going on here?

Speaker:

Here's the thing.

Speaker:

They had every indication,

Speaker:

and every single indicator of being a church,

Speaker:

but they were not worshiping the true God.

Speaker:

And when we put our vices, and we put our idols in front,

Speaker:

we can show up to church.

Speaker:

We can be in a building.

Speaker:

We can have a worship set.

Speaker:

We can have lyrics on a string.

Speaker:

We can have great lights.

Speaker:

We can have programming.

Speaker:

We have ministries.

Speaker:

We can have baptisms.

Speaker:

We have all those things.

Speaker:

But if God's not in the middle of it,

Speaker:

then it means nothing.

Speaker:

Then it means absolutely nothing.

Speaker:

It's like wearing a shirt that says,

Speaker:

I'm a believer, and I'm a follower,

Speaker:

but living a life that looks something completely different.

Speaker:

The church elevates Christ.

Speaker:

It's not about us.

Speaker:

So the scripture we read in Colossians says this.

Speaker:

All things, not some things,

Speaker:

but all things have been created through him and for him.

Speaker:

This includes his church.

Speaker:

Now, I said this a couple of weeks ago,

Speaker:

and I'm gonna say it again because you probably forgot.

Speaker:

The only celebrity here is and should be Jesus Christ.

Speaker:

The only celebrity here is and should be Jesus Christ,

Speaker:

and that should be the same for the church globally,

Speaker:

that Jesus Christ is the center,

Speaker:

the sufficiency of the blood of Jesus Christ

Speaker:

needs nothing added to it.

Speaker:

The sufficiency of Jesus Christ's blood

Speaker:

is sufficient for anyone who would believe

Speaker:

and say, Lord, save me, save my life.

Speaker:

The blood of Jesus is sufficient to cleanse sin,

Speaker:

and he is the center of his church.

Speaker:

The church doesn't elevate people.

Speaker:

We don't elevate people.

Speaker:

The church elevates Christ.

Speaker:

God is not impressed with programs, with personalities,

Speaker:

with platforms.

Speaker:

God is seeking worshipers.

Speaker:

He's seeking people who will worship him

Speaker:

in spirit and in truth, spirit and truth.

Speaker:

This is what John chapter four says.

Speaker:

Jesus is speaking to a Samaritan woman.

Speaker:

I want you to understand context here.

Speaker:

Jews were not supposed to speak to Samaritans,

Speaker:

and he's speaking to the Samaritan woman.

Speaker:

Guys, I tell you what, the church tends to be the place

Speaker:

where some of the most gross division happens,

Speaker:

but can I tell you, people divide, but the gospel unites.

Speaker:

People divide, but the gospel unites.

Speaker:

Jesus came so that all may be saved, not some,

Speaker:

not the ones that look like you or sound like you

Speaker:

or you can get along with, but salvation is for everybody.

Speaker:

The salvation is for everybody.

Speaker:

This is what he says.

Speaker:

Yet a time is coming and has now come

Speaker:

when true worshipers will worship the Father

Speaker:

in spirit and in truth, for they are the kinds of worshiper

Speaker:

the Father seeks, the Father seeks.

Speaker:

So the Father is seeking worshipers

Speaker:

who worship him in spirit and truth.

Speaker:

Now, that word worship there in Greek is a big word

Speaker:

that I can't pronounce, and I'm not gonna try,

Speaker:

but defined, it is likened to a dog

Speaker:

licking a master's hand.

Speaker:

So the inference there when it comes to worshipers

Speaker:

is that worship, listen to this,

Speaker:

worship doesn't have anything to do with how you feel.

Speaker:

Worship has to do with obedience.

Speaker:

Worship is connected, it's directly connected to obedience,

Speaker:

and your Father in heaven is looking and seeking worshipers,

Speaker:

those who will obey in spirit and in truth.

Speaker:

Worship is connected to obedience.

Speaker:

Let's see what our brother Paul wrote

Speaker:

in Romans chapter four, he says this.

Speaker:

Therefore I urge you, brothers and sisters,

Speaker:

there's an urgent plea here, in view of God's mercy,

Speaker:

offer your bodies as a living sacrifice,

Speaker:

holy and pleasing to God.

Speaker:

This is your true and proper worship.

Speaker:

So the context here is worship out of a life of obedience

Speaker:

is offering your body and your life as a living sacrifice.

Speaker:

In other words, I'm gonna bow down to what my flesh wants

Speaker:

and I'm going to do what the Spirit wants me to do.

Speaker:

That's worship.

Speaker:

Some of us have reduced worship to the 30 minute period

Speaker:

before Kevin speaks or Justin speaks or Ronnie speaks

Speaker:

or Barbie speaks.

Speaker:

Worship in that context, praise and worship,

Speaker:

is a time for us to enthrone the king on our praises.

Speaker:

It is a time for us to utilize gifts and talents

Speaker:

and instruments to enthrone him,

Speaker:

but our worship is a posture of obedience

Speaker:

and it is a daily choice.

Speaker:

It's a moment by moment choice.

Speaker:

Are you worshiping the Lord or are you worshiping yourself?

Speaker:

(congregation murmurs)

Speaker:

Are you worshiping the Lord or are you worshiping yourself?

Speaker:

A few weeks ago I talked about one of the hardest things

Speaker:

that we are asked to do is to just show up.

Speaker:

God wants us to just show up.

Speaker:

It's so easy to show up and I had given the story

Speaker:

about Joshua, I talked about Joshua going

Speaker:

into the Promised Land and God had said,

Speaker:

hey, you can have all of these cities

Speaker:

and I'm gonna give them into your hand

Speaker:

and Joshua is a commander of an army.

Speaker:

And he looked at his army and he would have had every,

Speaker:

it would have made so much sense to the people,

Speaker:

they were there ready to fight,

Speaker:

to go to Jericho and to bust down those walls.

Speaker:

But God said, no, I want you to shut your mouth

Speaker:

and I want you to walk around the walls seven times.

Speaker:

I'm talking like crazy, what?

Speaker:

And so the Lord convicted my heart a few weeks ago

Speaker:

after I left here because yes,

Speaker:

half of the battle is showing up

Speaker:

but the other half is doing what he tells you to do.

Speaker:

The other half is walking in obedience

Speaker:

to what he tells you to do.

Speaker:

You see, God could have told Joshua all day long,

Speaker:

I want you to walk around the walls

Speaker:

but he could have disobeyed.

Speaker:

Showing up was just part of the battle.

Speaker:

Doing what he tells you to do is the other half.

Speaker:

Are you worshiping God through your obedience to him?

Speaker:

So how you feel plays no significant role

Speaker:

in your decision to obey.

Speaker:

Ergo, your feelings are irrelevant when it comes to worship.

Speaker:

Do you know how many times I've asked my children

Speaker:

to go clean their room

Speaker:

and they did not feel like cleaning their room?

Speaker:

And do you know, had they acted upon how they felt,

Speaker:

I would have given them another feeling real fast?

Speaker:

Your feelings are not a prerequisite to your choice to obey.

Speaker:

They shouldn't be a prerequisite for your choice to obey.

Speaker:

Now I'll tell you, obedience sometimes doesn't feel good.

Speaker:

It doesn't feel good and whoever made up this idea

Speaker:

that God never wants you to feel bad,

Speaker:

God never wants you to feel anything bad

Speaker:

or hurt or anything like that,

Speaker:

God is not trying to make you hurt

Speaker:

but we live in a fallen world

Speaker:

and we're contending with our broken flesh

Speaker:

and there are gonna be times because he sees something better

Speaker:

on the other side that he's gonna ask you to do something

Speaker:

that you do not wanna do, that you don't feel like doing

Speaker:

but if you will obey, if you will obey,

Speaker:

his promises are always yes and amen

Speaker:

and on the other side of that thing,

Speaker:

you will see exactly why he asked you to do it.

Speaker:

Do you trust him?

Speaker:

Do you have the faith to believe what he says?

Speaker:

Will you step out in obedience to him?

Speaker:

So church, we have to pay attention.

Speaker:

We have to pay attention because we can get in circles,

Speaker:

we can get in community with people

Speaker:

who look like everything the church is supposed to look like

Speaker:

but not serve and worship the God we say we believe in.

Speaker:

We've got to pay attention to what's going on.

Speaker:

We've got to pay attention

Speaker:

to what's going on inside of our heart.

Speaker:

Who are we listening to?

Speaker:

Who are we obeying?

Speaker:

Is what's coming out to me lining up with his truth?

Speaker:

Because anything God asks us to do

Speaker:

is not going to go against what he's written in his word.

Speaker:

This is why we started with his word.

Speaker:

His word, his life, his church.

Speaker:

Active relationship with his word

Speaker:

but when we focus in on ourselves,

Speaker:

which man, so many times,

Speaker:

I have the propensity to do this myself,

Speaker:

we focus in on ourselves,

Speaker:

we find ourselves in a place where we'd rather find fault

Speaker:

in others than forgive.

Speaker:

We want to be catered to rather than be consecrated.

Speaker:

We want to settle for the limited

Speaker:

when we've got access to being liberated.

Speaker:

We'll work so hard to be so big

Speaker:

instead of humble ourselves enough to bow down.

Speaker:

We would rather be honored than to be humbled.

Speaker:

It's more important for us to look right

Speaker:

than it is for us to be righteous.

Speaker:

We look to get before we give.

Speaker:

We want to be served rather than to serve

Speaker:

and we want to be happy rather than be holy.

Speaker:

And if we choose to live lives

Speaker:

where happiness is at the forefront,

Speaker:

what I get is at the forefront,

Speaker:

me being big, my platform being huge,

Speaker:

all those things are on the forefront,

Speaker:

Christ will not be a part of it

Speaker:

and it will be destroyed.

Speaker:

It will be destroyed.

Speaker:

This is why you want to attend a local church

Speaker:

that's preaching the truth of God's word.

Speaker:

Not an idea, not an opinion,

Speaker:

not something that caters to culture,

Speaker:

but you want to find a church,

Speaker:

you want to be under teaching that lines up with God's word.

Speaker:

Now how do you know that it lines up with God's word?

Speaker:

You gotta read it for yourself.

Speaker:

I've had so many times I've wanted to come up here

Speaker:

as an object lesson and say,

Speaker:

we're gonna read from 3rd Corinthians today, chapter nine,

Speaker:

and I was just gonna quote a bunch of stuff

Speaker:

and make it real close to truth

Speaker:

just to see how many amens I get.

Speaker:

You should be reading the word to know what it says

Speaker:

so that you can be thriving,

Speaker:

not just to test what you've been taught,

Speaker:

but so that you can find freedom for yourself.

Speaker:

How many of you, you're just in situations

Speaker:

and God has such answers in his word,

Speaker:

but you're looking everywhere else except for his word

Speaker:

for the answer that he has for you.

Speaker:

His word brings life.

Speaker:

His word brings life.

Speaker:

And so what's the culprit here?

Speaker:

Like, you know, what causes us to have the propensity

Speaker:

to lean into our flesh, lean into the cultural norms?

Speaker:

How does a church who on one Sunday

Speaker:

may be just thriving and going,

Speaker:

but the next week, man, it just seems like what's going on?

Speaker:

Is God even here?

Speaker:

What is the culprit here?

Speaker:

And you know, I don't really just wanna say,

Speaker:

you know, it really could be that some of these things

Speaker:

that are happening here, you know, is,

Speaker:

you know, the Bible says since then

Speaker:

you've been raised with Christ, you know,

Speaker:

set your hearts on things above and not below

Speaker:

and set your minds on things above, not on earthly things

Speaker:

for you died and he raised,

Speaker:

he's not, our life is not a human being, Christ.

Speaker:

Now, when Christ is in you, your life,

Speaker:

your life appears, you will also appear with him in glory.

Speaker:

It's a glorious thing, it's a glorious truth

Speaker:

and if you just change your life,

Speaker:

may God will have something for you

Speaker:

and it's so wonderful, it's so rich and so powerful,

Speaker:

you know, and God is so good and he's so big

Speaker:

and he's so wonderful and so grand.

Speaker:

And now I would like to invite you

Speaker:

to the altar space to change your life.

Speaker:

Those who administer will come and pray.

Speaker:

We are so distracted.

Speaker:

We are so distracted and distractions cause you

Speaker:

to miss what is meant to be seen.

Speaker:

And even at church with well-meaning people,

Speaker:

with Christians, with people who are saved by the blood,

Speaker:

you can be distracted.

Speaker:

You can be distracted because we all are human

Speaker:

and we all have flesh and let me tell you something,

Speaker:

we all like to have a good time.

Speaker:

Let me tell you something, the Lord,

Speaker:

I believe the Lord, I believe we are gonna have

Speaker:

the best time when we get there with him

Speaker:

and I believe that he wants us to have abundant life now

Speaker:

and I believe that coming to church on Sundays,

Speaker:

we should be having a good time but here's the thing,

Speaker:

I don't want to be at a party that he's not hosting.

Speaker:

I don't wanna be a part of a celebration

Speaker:

where he's not the focus and he's not the one

Speaker:

that we're celebrating and when we're at that type of party,

Speaker:

everything else is gonna be taken care of.

Speaker:

We're talking about the finest, most wonderful things

Speaker:

happening when he's at the center.

Speaker:

Distractions cause you to miss what's meant to be seen.

Speaker:

We've got a few graphic designers in the church

Speaker:

but I was looking at some logos for different companies

Speaker:

this past week and do you know that graphic designers,

Speaker:

whenever they design things, most of the time,

Speaker:

they're not trying to like fool you or hide stuff for you.

Speaker:

In fact, they're trying to actually make it overt.

Speaker:

They want you to see whatever it is

Speaker:

they're trying to brand but I came across some logos

Speaker:

that I was like, I didn't ever see that before.

Speaker:

Let's look at a few of them, okay.

Speaker:

This is the Bronx Zoo and I put this up there

Speaker:

'cause I like giraffes but if you look at the legs

Speaker:

of the giraffes, you might see that there's some buildings

Speaker:

carved in there.

Speaker:

This is the Pittsburgh Zoo.

Speaker:

That's a great tree, some birds but if you look

Speaker:

at the trunk of the tree, you might see two animals

Speaker:

facing each other.

Speaker:

(audience member whoops)

Speaker:

Right, that's what I said.

Speaker:

Milwaukee.

Speaker:

Brewers.

Speaker:

There's an M and a B in that glove.

Speaker:

Wonder if that was intentional.

Speaker:

FedEx, anybody use FedEx for your packages?

Speaker:

They're going places.

Speaker:

Apparently to the right because if you look

Speaker:

between the E and the X, there's an arrow.

Speaker:

Ever see that?

Speaker:

Oh, yeah.

Speaker:

(audience laughs)

Speaker:

Tostitos, anybody eat Tostitos?

Speaker:

I thought that that was just a little like plop of color

Speaker:

but that's two people eating chips and salsa

Speaker:

in the middle of that Tostitos logo.

Speaker:

Did you ever see that?

Speaker:

Who never saw that before?

Speaker:

Come on, all right.

Speaker:

Yeah, crazy.

Speaker:

Goodwill.

Speaker:

Goodwill, well, look at that smile up there.

Speaker:

You think it's just to make you happy

Speaker:

because you dropped off all of your stuff

Speaker:

you didn't want at Goodwill?

Speaker:

That's actually an enlarged G from the bottom.

Speaker:

See that?

Speaker:

It's just the G.

Speaker:

Amazon.

Speaker:

Makes me smile because it looks like

Speaker:

they're trying to smile at me with that orange arrow

Speaker:

but no, that's there because Amazon has things

Speaker:

from A to Z, A to Z.

Speaker:

Oh, yeah.

Speaker:

When you are distracted,

Speaker:

you will not see the thing that was always there.

Speaker:

Some of you come into this place every week

Speaker:

carrying burdens, weight, problems, addictions, pain

Speaker:

and Jesus has been here every single time

Speaker:

but because of your distraction,

Speaker:

you don't see that healing is available for you right now.

Speaker:

If we would just take the time to remove the distractions

Speaker:

and open our eyes and our heart to see him,

Speaker:

I believe God would do supernatural,

Speaker:

extraordinary things among us

Speaker:

in his church where he is glorified.

Speaker:

Guys, when I come here, when I engage the church,

Speaker:

as much as I love you, I don't wanna see you.

Speaker:

I wanna see the Lord.

Speaker:

I wanna see the Lord.

Speaker:

Is anybody with me?

Speaker:

Do we wanna see the Lord?

Speaker:

Like do you wanna see the Lord move?

Speaker:

Like I'm gonna tell you something.

Speaker:

I love my wife so much.

Speaker:

She is my bride and it brings me great joy

Speaker:

to do things for my wife.

Speaker:

Can you imagine Jesus calling the church his bride?

Speaker:

I'm talking about the son of the God who breathes stars.

Speaker:

Like this is the bride of Christ.

Speaker:

Can you imagine what Jesus Christ wants to do for his bride?

Speaker:

Can you imagine the way he wants to love on his bride?

Speaker:

We just have to open our eyes to see him

Speaker:

and when it comes to distractions,

Speaker:

it renders us incapable and capable of seeing

Speaker:

everything he wants us to see.

Speaker:

So this morning, friends, are you distracted?

Speaker:

I'm talking about you individually

Speaker:

and your coming and your going

Speaker:

and your work life and your relationships,

Speaker:

your phone, your bank account,

Speaker:

your trials, your trip, are you distracted this morning?

Speaker:

Because while we come in here with the purpose

Speaker:

of not being distracted collectively,

Speaker:

it doesn't help when we come in here

Speaker:

distracted individually.

Speaker:

In fact, I would say it's somewhat impossible

Speaker:

for us to collectively not be distracted

Speaker:

if so many of us are distracted individually.

Speaker:

Are you distracted right now in life?

Speaker:

2024, April, this has been crazy year for Kevin O'Day.

Speaker:

Almost lost my life, crazy.

Speaker:

And you might be just soaring up there with eagles right now,

Speaker:

seasons for everything,

Speaker:

but I have every reason to be distracted right now

Speaker:

in my life.

Speaker:

But my Lord and Savior just says, keep looking at me.

Speaker:

Keep looking at me.

Speaker:

And it's so easy in the church to do.

Speaker:

I was talking, I don't think he'll mind me sharing this,

Speaker:

I was talking to Pastor Justin a few weeks ago

Speaker:

and he was telling me,

Speaker:

man, there's like, I don't remember the number,

Speaker:

thousands of comments on the group thread

Speaker:

and our men's ministry has so many more men

Speaker:

than ever before and it's just great.

Speaker:

We're just thriving all this stuff.

Speaker:

And I had that conversation and I walked away from it.

Speaker:

You know what the thought I had is, look what we've built.

Speaker:

Look what we've built.

Speaker:

And the Holy Spirit said, oh really?

Speaker:

So easy in an instant.

Speaker:

When I became youth pastor the first time,

Speaker:

I was in there the last service

Speaker:

before I became youth pastor.

Speaker:

65 kids walked in the next day, we have 15.

Speaker:

(soft music)

Speaker:

Where's your heart?

Speaker:

It's not about how many people come.

Speaker:

It's about Jesus Christ.

Speaker:

Do you wanna talk about your ministry?

Speaker:

Talk about the fruit of how the Holy Spirit

Speaker:

changed somebody's life.

Speaker:

Not I had this many show up, this,

Speaker:

all of these things, this grand theater,

Speaker:

I believe impacting so many thousands of people

Speaker:

in the community.

Speaker:

Why?

Speaker:

Look what we built.

Speaker:

No.

Speaker:

It's so that we can stand up here

Speaker:

and pray for Craig this morning.

Speaker:

So Libby could be baptized.

Speaker:

Are you distracted?

Speaker:

I wanna see the Lord.

Speaker:

And so this morning we're gonna do something

Speaker:

a little unusual.

Speaker:

Go figure, yeah?

Speaker:

I've asked Vonna and Garner to come

Speaker:

and Vonda's gonna minister to us through song.

Speaker:

But what I would ask you to do this morning,

Speaker:

we have those cushy chairs, everybody's bottom okay?

Speaker:

Got those cushy chairs?

Speaker:

Some churches don't have cushy chairs.

Speaker:

We got cushy chairs here, okay?

Speaker:

I would like you to make that cushy chair

Speaker:

your altar this morning.

Speaker:

(gentle music)

Speaker:

And what we're gonna do is we're gonna ask the Lord.

Speaker:

We're gonna go into months of this series.

Speaker:

We're gonna be talking about his church.

Speaker:

We are gonna talk about history.

Speaker:

We're gonna talk about the Lord in Ephesians four,

Speaker:

all these things.

Speaker:

We're gonna be talking about those things.

Speaker:

But as we start on this journey together

Speaker:

throughout the rest of 2024,

Speaker:

I wanna do so not distracted.

Speaker:

I want us to see the Lord.

Speaker:

But it starts individually.

Speaker:

So I'm gonna ask you to make your chair your altar space.

Speaker:

And the prayer this morning,

Speaker:

Lord, would you open the eyes of our hearts

Speaker:

so that we actually would see you.

Speaker:

We actually would see you.

Speaker:

And guys, I'm telling you,

Speaker:

if we individually can get a hold of that prayer,

Speaker:

the Lord will begin to answer it.

Speaker:

And you think we've been having church?

Speaker:

We will begin to have church.

Speaker:

Because he's gonna be right in the middle of it.

Speaker:

So make your chair your altar

Speaker:

and let's worship just for a few moments together.

Speaker:

If your distraction is worry, anxiety, pain,

Speaker:

work, finances, you fill in the blank,

Speaker:

whatever that distraction is,

Speaker:

I want you to know this morning

Speaker:

that Jesus holds all things together

Speaker:

and his way is better.

Speaker:

His way is always better.

Speaker:

So as we go into this series this year,

Speaker:

his church is about him,

Speaker:

holding it all together

Speaker:

so that he himself can be glorified.

Speaker:

I'd like to close this morning with a quote from C.S. Lewis

Speaker:

from "Mere Christianity."

Speaker:

He says this.

Speaker:

"It is easy to think that the church

Speaker:

"has a lot of different objects,

Speaker:

"education, building, missions, holding services,

Speaker:

"just as it is easy to think that the state

Speaker:

"has a lot of different objects,

Speaker:

"military, political, economical, and whatnot.

Speaker:

"But in a way, things are much simpler than that.

Speaker:

"The state exists simply to promote and protect

Speaker:

"the ordinary happiness of human beings in life.

Speaker:

"A husband and a wife chatting over a fire,

Speaker:

"a couple of friends having a game of darts,

Speaker:

"a man reading a book in his own room

Speaker:

"or digging his own garden.

Speaker:

"That's what the state is there for.

Speaker:

"And unless they are helping to increase and prolong

Speaker:

"and protect such moments, all the laws, parliaments,

Speaker:

"armies, courts, police, economics, et cetera,

Speaker:

"are simply a waste of time in the same way.

Speaker:

"The church exists for nothing else

Speaker:

"but to draw men into Christ, to make them little Christs.

Speaker:

"And if the church is not doing that,

Speaker:

"all cathedrals, clergy, missions, sermons,

Speaker:

"even the Bible itself is simply a waste of time."

Speaker:

It's not a waste of time because Jesus' bride is the church.

Speaker:

And the church is going to prevail

Speaker:

because it belongs to him, not to us.

Speaker:

You get the privilege of being a part of it.

Speaker:

How are you treating it?

Speaker:

So as we end today, we've got a few moments left.

Speaker:

Just like Joshua stood before the people and said,

Speaker:

you know, I don't know what you're gonna do,

Speaker:

but me and my house, we're gonna serve the Lord.

Speaker:

I'd like to invite the head of the household,

Speaker:

married couples, you could come, that's fine.

Speaker:

But if you are a household represented at Springhouse,

Speaker:

you would say Springhouse is our church.

Speaker:

This is I'm representing my family.

Speaker:

I wanna invite you to come to the altar space

Speaker:

to make a declaration this morning

Speaker:

that you are going to make room for him,

Speaker:

that you're gonna ask him to tear down traditions,

Speaker:

ideologies, religion, and that you are gonna surrender

Speaker:

your heart posture for you and your family

Speaker:

to make room for him to be seen and him alone.

Speaker:

Would you stand with me?

Speaker:

And if that's you, come forward this morning

Speaker:

and let's make that declaration

Speaker:

as we sing this song together.

Speaker:

(gentle music)

Speaker:
