I've noticed a phenomenon experienced by mid career professionals

Lucia Knight:I call it the squeeze.
Lucia Knight:Now you need to know about it only if you want to be paid well
Lucia Knight:and to do highly valued work for the remainder of your work life.
Lucia Knight:So let's assume you do.
Lucia Knight:So what is the squeeze?
Lucia Knight:Here's my definition.
Lucia Knight:The squeeze happens when a professional skills or knowledge or talents become
Lucia Knight:commoditized by the market, resulting in them earning less and less over time.
Lucia Knight:There are five major signs that you're experiencing the squeeze.
Lucia Knight:Here they are.
Lucia Knight:Number one, you're competing with professionals with much less
Lucia Knight:experience for the same roles.
Lucia Knight:Your skills or talents are perceived as not unique enough
Lucia Knight:to warrant premium pricing.
Lucia Knight:Three, you find yourself constantly trolling LinkedIn and other job
Lucia Knight:sites, applying cold for jobs with diminishing chances of being picked.
Lucia Knight:Four, you use generalized terms to describe what you do, like consulting,
Lucia Knight:leadership, governance, strategy, finance, or marketing, instead
Lucia Knight:of showcasing your uniqueness.
Lucia Knight:And number five, you're getting paid less.
Lucia Knight:than before, despite delivering similar quality work.
Lucia Knight:That one's a doozy, isn't it?
Lucia Knight:So who experiences the squeeze most harshly?
Lucia Knight:My direct experience with clients has shown me that the squeeze is prevalent in
Lucia Knight:industries like finance, pharmaceutical, consulting, fintech, FNCG, leisure,
Lucia Knight:banking, retail, academia, publishing, big tech, agriculture, manufacturing, and law.
Lucia Knight:This might suggest that it's happening everywhere.
Lucia Knight:In my eight years of research, two types of professionals experienced
Lucia Knight:the squeeze particularly harshly.
Lucia Knight:The first is small business owners who struggle to define the unique
Lucia Knight:problem they solve and to identify their specific target audience.
Lucia Knight:Or who cannot articulate how their methods solve significant
Lucia Knight:problems uniquely, preventing them from charging premium prices.
Lucia Knight:The other is generalists who offer generic business consulting, coaching, marketing,
Lucia Knight:HR, finance, legal services, etc.
Lucia Knight:to a broad, unspecified clientele.
Lucia Knight:These generalists are professionals claiming, I can
Lucia Knight:do marketing, HR, finance, etc.
Lucia Knight:for any business.
Lucia Knight:And when we hear that, We know that they're not commanding high fees.
Lucia Knight:Now here's the crunch.
Lucia Knight:The world doesn't need more generalists.
Lucia Knight:It needs specialists who solve specific problems in specific ways,
Lucia Knight:delivering specific, provable results.
Lucia Knight:Why don't more people talk about the squeeze?
Lucia Knight:Individuals experiencing the squeeze often blame the market.
Lucia Knight:Initially, if the situation persists, they start blaming
Lucia Knight:themselves, which is unhelpful.
Lucia Knight:Instead, I want mid career professionals to earn their worth, to work fewer
Lucia Knight:hours, and to do highly valued work that makes them feel valuable.
Lucia Knight:I get this question often.
Lucia Knight:Is the squeeze fair?
Lucia Knight:Well, this isn't really the issue.
Lucia Knight:It's about understanding the business game and no business minded individual
Lucia Knight:that I know pays highly for easy work.
Lucia Knight:Outsource providers have taken over this high volume, low value market.
Lucia Knight:But when work is complex, nuanced, requires rare specialist skills,
Lucia Knight:knowledge or experience or involves messy human relationships and
Lucia Knight:cultural transformations, it becomes high value work due to
Lucia Knight:the high risk of getting it wrong.
Lucia Knight:And this is premium work.
Lucia Knight:Let's leave the low value commoditized, generalized work to AI solutions.
Lucia Knight:Instead, let's focus on identifying your uniqueness with tangible, provable
Lucia Knight:results from your past to communicate effectively in interviews, resumes,
Lucia Knight:CVs, business discussions, and even casual conversations at the weekend.
Lucia Knight:There are three or four things.
Lucia Knight:that you do in the world of work, that you do more easily,
Lucia Knight:lightly, speedily than anyone else.
Lucia Knight:These activities give you a jolt of energy, a jolt of
Lucia Knight:satisfaction, a jolt of joy.
Lucia Knight:They are the key to your unique offering, unlocking a future filled with
Lucia Knight:fulfilling work that allows you to earn well for as long as you wish to work.
Lucia Knight:Whether you own a business, have a full time corporate career, a portfolio
Lucia Knight:career, or a flexible career, these cornerstone activities will build a
Lucia Knight:deeply satisfying high earning career.
Lucia Knight:Now, it may be hard work figuring out these unique activities, but
Lucia Knight:once discovered, they will serve you and your bank balance well,
Lucia Knight:for the rest of your working life.
Lucia Knight:What I know for sure is that you are worth the investment of time, energy and focus.
Lucia Knight:And the earlier in your career you discover your uniqueness, the
Lucia Knight:longer you'll enjoy the benefits.
Lucia Knight:It's never too late, and you're never too old to discover your uniqueness.
