Speaker A:Welcome Sahara.
Speaker B:Thank you so much for having me, Coco.
Speaker A:It's great to have you here.
Speaker A:So, as we always get started with our question about a book written by a woman that has significantly influenced your life.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:One that really stuck out to me is Daring Greatly.
Speaker B:And that's by Brene Brown.
Speaker B:And the reason is because being in the world of travel, it's if you're very introverted like I was, it's really easy to stay within your shell.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker B:And this book teaches you the importance of being vulnerable.
Speaker B:And I found that really important as I got into business, especially in a travel business, because travel is all about storytelling.
Speaker B:And you need to be able to pull back those layers and allow your ideal clients to truly resonate with you.
Speaker B:And that takes vulnerability.
Speaker B:That's a book that I think any woman in business should be reading because in order to connect properly with your ideal clients, your audience, build your brand.
Speaker B:Storytelling and being vulnerable is a key component to that.
Speaker A:Yeah, I wonder, did that have a lot to do with your choice to write a book?
Speaker A:You know that idea of storytelling and.
Speaker B:Connecting my book actually stemmed from.
Speaker B:So that was the very first thing I did in my business, was write my book.
Speaker B:I had started my travel blog not because travel blogging became cool and a way to monetize and make money.
Speaker B: n I started traveling back in: Speaker B:And so I started using this blog platform online and paying for computer use in hostels and in finding places that had computers where I could pay.
Speaker B:There wasn't just free WI fi everywhere back then.
Speaker B:I had a flip phone that didn't turn on for service.
Speaker B:I had paper maps for navigation.
Speaker B:I'm an only child and she's a single mom, so we're very close.
Speaker B:I wanted to let her know where I was in the world, that I was okay, and share my journey with her.
Speaker B:And I didn't promote my blog or anything.
Speaker B:People organically started finding my blog and one of my most popular topics, according to my analytics, was how to travel the world when you can't afford it.
Speaker B:And the second most popular was something along the similar title.
Speaker B:And so I was like, wow, people are organically looking for this topic.
Speaker B:I'm going to expand this blog post and turn it into a book.
Speaker B:I combined that topic into the topic of travel coaching and how I inspire and empower others to get outside their comfort zone.
Speaker B:And that's where hey, you just go came from.
Speaker A:Oh, that is so cool.
Speaker A:And that's a great story.
Speaker A:I love that you did this big, long trip.
Speaker A:And how many of those countries that you.
Speaker A:That you have visited was during that?
Speaker A:84 countries.
Speaker A:How many was during that, that adventure.
Speaker B:That initial adventure, that time?
Speaker B:Well, I traveled for 10 years to the 84 countries.
Speaker B:So during that time with the blog.
Speaker B:Are you asking before?
Speaker B:I mean, growth over the years, I would go anywhere between two weeks to six months at a time during my adventures.
Speaker B:And so I.
Speaker B:I remember doing that six months a couple times over the years.
Speaker B:I don't remember exactly what country I was in when I was first able to bring a working cell phone with me that had an international plan or where the first place was that had free WI fi.
Speaker B:I wish I actually could remember that.
Speaker B:I'm sure it's in my travel journal somewhere.
Speaker B:Because that's actually a really interesting question.
Speaker B:Is like, where in the world was I when free WI fi was a thing and you no longer had to pay for computer usage.
Speaker A:That's great.
Speaker A:Maybe you could share with us.
Speaker A:I know you were a communications manager in corporate America.
Speaker A:How did you make that pivotal change?
Speaker A:What was that moment when you made that change from corporate communications to becoming the founder of the Travel Coach Network?
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:I knew sitting in a corporate office was not for me.
Speaker B:Having someone dictate when I could or couldn't go on a vacation was not for me.
Speaker B:I.
Speaker B:I didn't know what I wanted for a really long time for a career path and.
Speaker B:But I did know what I didn't want.
Speaker B:I also wanted to enjoy my travels.
Speaker B:I didn't want to work for a company that just paid me to travel for business because I had known so many business travelers who didn't get to enjoy the places they actually went to.
Speaker B:I really just wanted to have an adventure around the world and soak in all that I could.
Speaker B:And in that timeframe, I gave myself grace.
Speaker B:As the years went by and I didn't find what I was looking for.
Speaker B:I always believed there had to be something more in a travel career than what the industry has said.
Speaker B:I have a degree in hospitality and tourism management, so I have a wide range of knowledge of roles, positions and opportunities.
Speaker B:I was living in the big city of Chicago at the time of graduating, so there was a lot of opportunities in tourism, hospitality there, plus all my exposure throughout the years as technology changed and social media grew.
Speaker B:And I still was like, I.
Speaker B:There's nothing aligned with how I want to empower others through travel until I came across the coaching industry.
Speaker B: And that was in: Speaker B:I have to start something for myself because.
Speaker B:Because I didn't find it this whole time.
Speaker A:That is so cool.
Speaker A:So how do you.
Speaker A:What is travel coaching like?
Speaker A:How do you define it?
Speaker A:How is it different from a traditional travel agency service?
Speaker B:Yeah, yeah, that's our most common question.
Speaker B:Obviously, it's still a newer trend, even though I've started my business about six and a half years ago now.
Speaker B:Travel coaching, unlike a travel agent, does not focus on the booking phase of a trip.
Speaker B:That's a whole different specialty, accessibility and training that you need to be a travel agent instead.
Speaker B:A travel coach is someone who helps people bring awareness to why they want to travel, helps them set intentions for their trips, like, what are you really looking to get out of this trip?
Speaker B:Why are you wanting to get away?
Speaker B:It helps people use travel as a tool, a medium, a vessel for things like transformation, healing, self discovery, personal growth, professional development, reaching any of these goals and aspirations that we strive for.
Speaker B:During the inspiration, planning and booking phase of a trip in the first place.
Speaker A:That's really cool.
Speaker A:There's more than just here's where I'm gonna go and these are the places I'm gonna have a tour.
Speaker A:It's deeper than that.
Speaker A:You could go anywhere in the world and explore a certain aspect of oneself.
Speaker B:Yeah, absolutely.
Speaker B:When you can bring awareness to your why for travel?
Speaker B:Because every time we go on a trip, we're a different human being.
Speaker B:There's different things happening in our lives.
Speaker B:Maybe we are had a really busy month in work and we're nearing burnout and we just need some time to, you know, have some self care or maybe we recently lost a loved one or went through a big life event and we're grieving a little bit.
Speaker B:Travel based on this is all based off of research.
Speaker B:I spent years doing research.
Speaker B:There's so many studies out there and articles and, and case studies and publications, statistics that talk about the various mental, emotional, physical, spiritual, social wellness benefits of travel.
Speaker B:And travel coaches just really bring that to the surface.
Speaker B:How can you use this information and use something that people love to do, which is travel, and really create these meaningful transformative journeys that change people's lives and is something that people can turn to continue to change their lives and be better and live the best life they can?
Speaker B:Because these are all the things we hear that travel does for us.
Speaker B:It's just something that people say and then kind of goes to the wayside.
Speaker B:But really the travel coach network goal is to get that messaging out there that travel is that tool in our toolkit to help us.
Speaker A:Wonderful.
Speaker A:So what are the core principles of your ICF accredited certification program for travel coaches?
Speaker A:And how do these principles empower coaches to really create that transformative experience for their clients?
Speaker B:And the fact that we are ICF accredited and we focus on coaching sets us apart from the traditional travel expert role like a travel agent or travel consultants.
Speaker B:Because in order to understand how to understand the fundamentals of coaching and to use that to better understand your client on a human level, it's all about asking the right questions, questions that help bring answers to the surface.
Speaker B:For your client.
Speaker B:It's about coaching and advising about creating a safe space.
Speaker B:Travel is personal, travel is emotional.
Speaker B:And if we don't bring to the surface why we really want to get away, why we really want to travel, people will be steered towards trips that probably won't lead them to the outcomes they're looking for.
Speaker B:We're bombarded with all of the marketing and tourism right beautiful beaches Go here, go there, buy now, book now.
Speaker B:Palm trees, popular destinations, touristy destinations, have your bucket list.
Speaker B:People are telling you based off of their own opinions where you should go and what's good to see and do.
Speaker B:But for yourself, if you aren't in tuned in with your own why and what are you really in need of right now, you'll end up going maybe to a popular destination like Paris that is a crazy hectic city and hustle and bustle and really what you need right now is some time in nature, is some time by a body of water, some time to self reflect, some time to really just take care of yourself.
Speaker B:I hope I'm answering your question.
Speaker A:Yeah, no, that makes sense.
Speaker A:I'm wondering if you could describe for a second like one of your own, maybe two or three of your own favorite travel experiences and where you went, how you spent your time and what made the experience transformative.
Speaker B:Yeah, absolutely.
Speaker B:One that I talk about often is my time in the Philippines.
Speaker B:I had always heard about the Philippines.
Speaker B:We have a big Filipino population.
Speaker B:A lot of my friends were Filipino and I had learned a lot about their culture.
Speaker B:So it was always on my bucket list.
Speaker B:I knew nothing about the country, what would be there, how it would be.
Speaker B:When I was backpacking Southeast Asia for the first time, I went to Japan first, then Taiwan and then I was headed over to the Philippines.
Speaker B:But when I was in Taiwan, there had been a super typhoon that went through the Philippines at the time.
Speaker B:The part that I was flying into Philippines is very big.
Speaker B:So I no longer could use my budget flight that I bought and lost out on that money.
Speaker B:But I couldn't go in until they said it was okay to fly into the country.
Speaker B:And so during that time I did some research.
Speaker B:I didn't have a game plan when I travel.
Speaker B:I'm just going for whatever reason and making my way around.
Speaker B:So I was like, let's see how I can go and help in any way.
Speaker B:A month went by, found a group of volunteers online.
Speaker B:I rebought a new ticket and flew into Cebu, the Philippines and followed their instructions on how to get to this island up in the north from the main city of Cebu and stay there with the volunteers to help on this island and didn't know I was getting myself into.
Speaker B:But I ended up falling in love with the island, with the people of the Philippines.
Speaker B:It's one of my favorite places on this planet.
Speaker B:When I went there, it had been as if a tornado went through the infrastructure.
Speaker B:They didn't have infrastructure on this island.
Speaker B:So everything was A disaster.
Speaker B:Every time I see the photos that I have in my picture book from this, it takes me right back because it's just unbelievable.
Speaker B:But with that said, the people there were so kind, so welcoming, so appreciative and so happy.
Speaker B:I'm thinking these people already had very little and that all got taken away.
Speaker B:They're still so happy and so giving.
Speaker B:That itself taught me so much about humanity, about what's important in life, about perspective and values, that we don't need a lot to be happy in life.
Speaker B:That trip on its own, and I ended up revisiting the same exact island St.
Speaker B:Route.
Speaker B:One or two years later, I saw the same people.
Speaker B:Some of the volunteers were still there helping.
Speaker B:They ended up living there.
Speaker B:The people welcomed me and remembered me and the little kids that were so little at the time remembered me.
Speaker B:I took them my childhood sticker book.
Speaker B:So that was one place that really stuck out to me, is whenever I recommend a tropical, beautiful, great place to go, I always say the Philippines.
Speaker B:Another one that I kept going back to was Thailand.
Speaker B:I fell in love with this little town called Old Phuket Town and a small, colonial, colorful little town, cobblestone streets.
Speaker B:And I just fell in love with the culture and the people.
Speaker B:I developed a new routine of how to slow things down and have a new pace in life and became like one of the locals and was accepted that way.
Speaker B:Traveling is something that can open your eyes to other ways of life.
Speaker B:Whether you live in the place again or go back home, you can take those pieces of inspiration home with you and really shape who you are in the life that you have.
Speaker A:It's beautiful.
Speaker A:It's absolutely beautiful.
Speaker A:I haven't been to the Philippines.
Speaker A:I have come to Thailand.
Speaker A:I went there for, I guess it was a month.
Speaker A:It was right after I'd left corporate.
Speaker A: ss it would have been in like: Speaker A:And it was amazing.
Speaker A:It was like a period of time where I didn't work.
Speaker A:And I remember one day I didn't work at all for the whole time I was there.
Speaker A:Well, I remember waking up one day and like, oh, this is what I'm like.
Speaker A:If I'm not working, this is the person I am without my work, you know, and waking up every day and not having a plan and conquering the day and, you know, just like, oh, my gosh, we're in a downpour now.
Speaker A:There's nowhere to go, you know, and just experiencing it, it was profound.
Speaker A:What delights me about your business is that it's opening another.
Speaker A:Another Realm of personal development for people, right?
Speaker B:Absolutely, yeah.
Speaker A:And so tell us more.
Speaker A:So your business, the Travel coach network, you serve and certify coaches and you also then if somebody would like to work with a travel coach, you pair them up to direct them.
Speaker A:Can you tell us more about what you do, your business and how it's structured?
Speaker B:Yeah, absolutely.
Speaker B:So our flagship program is the Travel Coach certification program, ICF accredited.
Speaker B:That's where people get trained, educated and certified.
Speaker B:It is an evergreen program.
Speaker B:People can join anytime, it's self paced and there is a four part assessment to get certified.
Speaker B:We hold monthly live trainings, continuing education sessions and practice coaching sessions to provide all the resources and trainings to help our travel coaches build their ideal travel coaching business.
Speaker B:We introduce them to a variety of revenue streams aside of just one on ones.
Speaker B:It's not beyond just an ICF coach program.
Speaker B:It also is a very much a business program too because it's one thing just to get certified at something and it's another to learn how to turn that into a business.
Speaker B:Whatever I learn and my mentors I bring in, we provide resources and trainings on marketing, branding, email marketing, visibility and how to pitch to the media to help them grow their business.
Speaker B:We developed what's called our Travel Coach searchable database which is on HireTravelCoach.com it's in its beta phase.
Speaker B:We have about 100, I believe of our travel coaches profiles up.
Speaker B:And this is a way for travelers to search travel coaches who are hyper specific to what they're looking for.
Speaker B:And what I mean by that is they can search their emotions.
Speaker B:Someone who, who works with trauma or grief or career breaks or life transitions.
Speaker B:The niches that travel coaches focus in are so personal and they stem far beyond the traditional cruises or Disney or family travel that we're used to hearing when it comes to travel expert.
Speaker B:And then we have a membership club which is just an added bonus for resources and business development for our members.
Speaker B:Yeah, we have members in 40 plus different countries now.
Speaker B:We just reached over 600 members in our certification program which, which is incredible because when I started this I was still figuring out what this all looks like to be able to pave the paths for our members all around this globe.
Speaker B:When we have people who join us from South Africa, Romania, Tanzania, New Zealand, you know, naming, and they're there.
Speaker B:It's, it's insane how Japan, how far, how they.
Speaker B:No matter what language people speak, people understand the meaning and purpose to travel and then they find us and they're like, this is what I'VE been looking for the whole time, which is what I had been looking for the whole time when I was traveling.
Speaker A:That's so cool.
Speaker A:And so I'm curious.
Speaker A:I love the business model.
Speaker A:I imagine it frees you to be creative travel and have a community at the same time.
Speaker A:You're always able to grow and teach what you're learning.
Speaker A:You have the freedom, freedom to do what you want.
Speaker A:And probably your travel coaches do too, right?
Speaker A:They can build their own schedules.
Speaker B:Yep, yep.
Speaker B:So a lot of them work remotely all around this world.
Speaker B:They're always hopping around the place to different places.
Speaker B:They, you know, it's all about creating the lifestyle and the business that you want, the sense of freedom that you want.
Speaker B:And that's one of the reasons why I decided to build my own business was because I wanted to plan my own schedule and calendar.
Speaker B:I wanted to wake up when I wanted to wake up.
Speaker B:I wanted to do work when I wanted to do work.
Speaker B:That's something I absolutely love about the lifestyle that I've created when it comes to my career.
Speaker B:It's incredible to see what a lot of these travel coaches have been building and you know, how they run their businesses.
Speaker B:There's a lot of travel agents who've come in to combine travel coaching with their, with their services.
Speaker B:Retreat leaders as well, life coaches, tour operators.
Speaker B:Travel coaching is a fundamental concept that's being integrated across the entire travel industry.
Speaker B:And for us to be paving the path for that is really exciting.
Speaker A:Well, that's what I was thinking too, is that I bet a lot of other professionals, it's like a wonderful addition to what you're doing.
Speaker B:You're a co added education and training into how to work with your clients, how to build your business, how to connect with your ideal clients.
Speaker B:All through the passion for travel.
Speaker B:We have some really great projects in store.
Speaker B:Translating our signature program into Spanish, launching a wellness version of our program.
Speaker B:Because wellness travel is huge.
Speaker B:We also had a beta mode that's accredited as well through icf, but a program specific for travel agents to combine travel coaching with their current business.
Speaker B:So those are just some of the exciting things that we have in store for this year.
Speaker A:That's so cool.
Speaker A:I'm so happy for you.
Speaker A:How did you build this enterprise?
Speaker A:Right?
Speaker A:Like, how did this happen?
Speaker A:I'm always interested in the strategy and what worked and what didn't.
Speaker B:A lot of hustle.
Speaker B:I'm a hustler.
Speaker B:When I started my business, I was running my own wellness travel coaching business and building that as I was building the travel coach Network, and I still do a little of that, but travel coach network is my main focus, essentially having two businesses.
Speaker B:But I show up network, build my connections and relationships.
Speaker B:I am very much a sponge to education myself, so joining memberships and organizations and associations that I find working mentors have helped tremendously.
Speaker B:I am no stranger to asking a mentor or someone for help or if they have an offer that I can opt into taking courses instead of.
Speaker B:A lot of people get stuck in the education phase.
Speaker B:I'm someone who listens to my intuition as I go through my business of, like, what's my pain point?
Speaker B:And then who can help, possibly help me with that?
Speaker B:And that's how I'm able to not be stuck in that education learning phase.
Speaker B:Now I've been able to build a team that helps me.
Speaker B:I was expanding our team because we have so many great things.
Speaker B:We just signed on two new partnerships with companies.
Speaker B:There's a lot that I manage, but I'm obsessed with what I'm building.
Speaker B:I feel like if you have a business, you have to be obsessed with it.
Speaker B:I did the math today and I thought, I've been doing this for five years.
Speaker B:I blinked and it's been six and a half years now.
Speaker B:I remember building this on the floor of my mom's apartment, hunched over my laptop because it was too tiny of a space.
Speaker B:I was still backpacking around the globe.
Speaker B:And when I would come home, I'd be on her floor.
Speaker B:I feel like that was just yesterday.
Speaker B:I don't put parameters around my work.
Speaker B:You have to find your own balance when it comes to your personal life, your relationships.
Speaker B:I'm now a mom.
Speaker B:My baby just turned one, and so I work from home with him.
Speaker B:And that's a whole learning curve too.
Speaker B:I give my business attention just like as if it's another child of mine, because I have a vision for what I'm creating and I am someone who thinks long term, strategically.
Speaker B:What kind of support, mentorship and guidance?
Speaker B:What kind of software?
Speaker B:What do I need to put in place in order to help me get across those stepping stones to where we're headed?
Speaker A:Amazing.
Speaker A:So what would be some final wisdom that you would want to share with a founder who is building her business and maybe plateaued or having some challenges?
Speaker A:What would you say to her?
Speaker B:One, I would go back to the drawing board and say, are you building a business that you truly believe in, or are you trying to mimic what someone else has done or what someone has told you is possible?
Speaker B:Or you're trying to fit into someone else's boxes because that's something I see people do a lot.
Speaker B:Well, I can't do that or I will do that because it's been proven someone's made money before with it, so it's proven.
Speaker B:You know, if I had that mentality, I wouldn't be here.
Speaker B:There was no such thing as travel coaching and a travel coach network when I started.
Speaker B:And I built it in a very stubborn industry like the travel industry that's run by men.
Speaker B:It's not easy to change and we're still working on it.
Speaker B:But if you have something that you believe in so deeply, like you feel it in your bones that this is going to happen at some point, then run with it.
Speaker B:You have to be the first to do something.
Speaker B:Everyone has to be the first to do something at some point.
Speaker B:There was a first Facebook, there was a first Amazon.
Speaker B:Let your business evolve.
Speaker B:A lot of people get stuck in their initial idea and once that doesn't happen, they feel like they have to completely start over and go elsewhere.
Speaker B:Think about these big companies.
Speaker B:Facebook and Amazon didn't start as they are now and let it evolve and be open minded to that evolution.
Speaker B:Learn from your mistakes or learn from any critiques or criticism that you get.
Speaker B:That can also put people into a limiting mindset.
Speaker B:People don't like what I'm doing or, you know, their opinion.
Speaker B:You take onto people's opinions too much, but you have to.
Speaker B:Maybe that means this is.
Speaker B:That was a turning point for me in my business when I would get critiques like there's no such thing as travel coaching.
Speaker B:You mean you're a travel agent?
Speaker B:It's the same thing.
Speaker B:I still get it every now and then, but it completely changed the game.
Speaker B:When I was like, okay, what am I doing that is wrong?
Speaker B:That means maybe I am not articulating my definition well enough.
Speaker B:I need to go and find some more industry research to support my beliefs in this.
Speaker B:So use it as an opportunity to grow.
Speaker B:You know, I can go on with business advice because it's been six and a half years, but these are just some of the main things that I feel.
Speaker B:People, it's not easy to have a business and you have to put in that time and energy.
Speaker B:You have to find what works for you.
Speaker A:Well said.
Speaker A:Wonderful.
Speaker A:So how can our listeners find you find Travel coach network the perfect person to be a travel coach and certify with you.
Speaker A:And who's the perfect person to work.
Speaker B:With a travel coach?
Speaker B:Someone who feels like there's a lot more to their story and their beliefs in travel and they want to make a bigger difference in the.
Speaker B:In the lives of others than just putting together itineraries and booking trips and making commissions that way, really, truly having a travel business that embodies your authenticity, your true beliefs around how powerful travel can be for others.
Speaker B:When it comes to hiring a travel coach, who would that be?
Speaker B:For those who want to be able to take control over their travels again instead of handing everything over, be empowered to incorporate travel into your lifestyle and use it to help you.
Speaker B:It's kind of like a sense of therapy and life coaching.
Speaker B:Why are you wanting to travel?
Speaker B:There's meaning behind that.
Speaker B:If you are someone who's really looking for a change in your life or change in feeling, a travel coach can be that person to help you not only just have a trip and figure out where to go and.
Speaker B:And what to do, but how that trip can really change whatever's going on in your life or your mindset.
Speaker A:Incredible.
Speaker A:Awesome.
Speaker A:And it makes me think, too.
Speaker A:It's like if you could decide, for example, a parent passes and you decide you're going to go to Portugal and you're going to mourn the loss of your loved one and do so in a very intentional way.
Speaker A:It's outside of your regular environment, and you can create these specific places and moments.
Speaker A:You can really process something there in a way that you might not be able to in your own home.
Speaker B:You're repeating a story of one of our members named Frederica, who.
Speaker B:The same exact story, same thing happened with her.
Speaker B:And even so, her mom and her had a trip planned that they always wanted to go on.
Speaker B:She lost her mom and went on this adventure on her own and realized that with the guilt of feeling like she must be home, this is her childhood home, you know, she must be there and.
Speaker B:But realize travel gave her a sense of freedom, a sense of healing, a sense of connection to her mom.
Speaker B:And it's just a story that inspires me so much.
Speaker B:And that's just one example of how incredible these travel coaches are and how they take what travel means to them to really change the lives of others.
Speaker A:That's beautiful.
Speaker A:I really love it.
Speaker A:I'm so excited I got to learn about you, Sahara, and your journey.
