Sonja:

Welcome to another episode of Femme on Fire.

2

:

I'm Sonja and today we're talking about

something super close to my heart.

3

:

How to actually relax when

you have some form of ADHD.

4

:

Especially after those really intense work

sessions where you're totally in the zone.

5

:

Or even if you try to change

task after being really focused

6

:

on something, it might be

extremely hard to refocus on them.

7

:

So even though some think that ADHD

is where you cannot focus at all and

8

:

you just run around like a headless

chicken, which sometimes is the case.

9

:

In most of us, that's not always the case.

10

:

We have this great ability to hyper

focus, sometimes even for several hours.

11

:

And our brains get really

completely flooded with what

12

:

we are doing at that time.

13

:

And at those times, that is when I'm

so focused on work that I forget to

14

:

eat, I forget to drink, uh, sometimes

I even forget to go to the bathroom.

15

:

And then when you try to relax,

your brain just keeps going.

16

:

It won't shut up.

17

:

It just goes and goes and goes.

18

:

So today I want to help Find

some ways to make that better.

19

:

I will tell you about

ways that work for me.

20

:

So we're not going to do any of that

Breathe deeply stuff that never works

21

:

for us ADHD Queens, but I will share

with you how I solve this problem.

22

:

The first thing is to get physical.

23

:

And I mean, your body needs to

know it's time to switch gears.

24

:

And I love doing little things like

getting up and doing a few silly wiggles

25

:

and dance moves or anything like that.

26

:

Or I might take the dog for

a walk for five minutes.

27

:

I mean, taking the dog actually gives

me purpose, but it's the walking

28

:

that's really important in this case.

29

:

And if you are somewhere like in an

office where a little dance might

30

:

get you some weird looks, then try

giving yourself a quick hand massage.

31

:

The hand massage really

stimulates your physical needs

32

:

that you have at that moment.

33

:

Another option is to wake up your senses.

34

:

So, your brain loves sensory stuff.

35

:

I mean, any ADHD brain

loves sensory stuff.

36

:

And especially when it

comes to calming down.

37

:

And I find that there are some

that work really well for me.

38

:

So, whenever I get a chance,

I always walk barefoot.

39

:

I don't at the moment because it's

really cold, so I have my, uh,

40

:

slippers on, but normally I do.

41

:

So when you feel that you

need to relax, try walking on

42

:

different kinds of surfaces.

43

:

My favorite is my chakra mat.

44

:

A few minutes walking in place on

top of that really chills me out.

45

:

It does take some getting used to because

it can, well, be a bit, I wouldn't say

46

:

painful, but it could be a bit sensitive.

47

:

Another option is to stick

your feet into warm water.

48

:

It sounds very silly, but sometimes I do

this while I'm watching my favorite show.

49

:

So that way my, both my head

and my senses are kept busy.

50

:

And I feel really relaxed after that.

51

:

The other thing that I love to

do, especially after a busy time,

52

:

is to wrap myself into something

heavy, like a weighted blanket.

53

:

A weighted blanket really makes

you feel like you are being held.

54

:

What you could also try is breathwork.

55

:

And, forget about that emptying

your mind stuff, because that

56

:

really doesn't work for us.

57

:

But you could try it in another way.

58

:

So, try and lie down or

sit in a comfy chair.

59

:

Then close your eyes.

60

:

And imagine that your breath

is like waves at the beach.

61

:

They go in and they go out.

62

:

And then with each wave, you

count the waves that come in.

63

:

And you could even try and improve

that by picturing that the breathing of

64

:

your waves is in your favorite color.

65

:

So, breathe in, breathe out,

breathe in, breathe out, and count.

66

:

I have done this while sitting at my

desk for five minutes as a quick reset.

67

:

And that helps me to make

it easier to change tasks.

68

:

And I can say that for us the

main thing is to stay active while

69

:

we're calming down, unlike a lot

of other people who want to clear

70

:

their mind and be really calm.

71

:

We need to stay active.

72

:

And here's a little secret.

73

:

You should keep your hands busy.

74

:

You can, for instance, make paper

airplanes, which my kids love, uh,

75

:

sort through your makeup collection,

do your nails or organize your desk,

76

:

but do something that, you know, you

have to be careful that you don't

77

:

get caught up in a new project.

78

:

It's really to Give your mind

something else to do and relax.

79

:

The last thing I want to share is some

time tricks that I have implemented to

80

:

help my brain shift a little bit easier.

81

:

I know time is a weird thing for us.

82

:

So here's what really helps me a lot.

83

:

I set actual timers for work periods.

84

:

This way my brain knows when

it's going to be over and I

85

:

can move on to the next thing.

86

:

It also helps my time management

as it links perfectly into

87

:

my time blocking strategy.

88

:

I also use different colors for

different parts of my day and it makes

89

:

it visually easier to block my time.

90

:

I take breaks before I think that I

need them and that's really important.

91

:

I just go up and get a cup of

coffee, pet my dog, talk to my

92

:

husband Or do anything, just a quick

break, just before I might need it.

93

:

This way I do not exhaust my brain

and I stay much more productive.

94

:

I feel our ADHD brains are a bit

like sparkly, energetic puppies.

95

:

You can't really force them to sleep.

96

:

And they need the right kind

of attention to settle down.

97

:

So, my advice is, don't fight

against your brain, work with it.

98

:

If you love these tips,

hit that follow button.

99

:

And share this episode with any amazing

woman that you might think needs it.

100

:

And I will see you next

time on Femme on Fire.
