Shownotes

We often learn the hard way that we are not in control of many things in life. But as cliché as it may sound, change is inevitable—and it applies to all aspects of our lives. It’s one of the virus types that comes at us at the most unexpected time. Sometimes, it can end up leading us to a positive situation. Other times, it’s what brings us down. That said, how can we prepare for change if we can’t anticipate the exact moment it will happen?

In this episode, Tim delves into the topic of building immunity to change. We will learn the significance of the words seek, go, create, and now in preparing for the shifts in our ways of life. This episode also marks the second anniversary of the podcast. With that, Tim finally answers which among the words in the podcast title resonates with him the most.

Tune in to the episode if you want to know how you can build up immunity to change!

Episode Highlights

[02:47] Becoming Immune to the Virus of Change

  • Tim always encounters these two words in the coaching world: control and change.
  • Control: Can you control and manage everything under you?
  • Change: How can you control change and keep it from coming at you?

[03:58] The Virus Types 2020 Brought

  • We’ve learned a lot about ourselves and how we deal with change over the last two years.
  • No one knew what was coming in early 2020 when COVID-19 officially became a global outbreak.
  • We constantly talk about how to prepare for changes in business and politics. But COVID-19 was one of the virus types no one saw coming.

[05:34] Dealing with Change

  • We cannot eliminate change, but we can manage and control it.
  • We can build up our immune system to not become as prone to the challenges accompanying change.

[06:25] Acquiring and Recovering from Other Virus Types: COVID-19

  • Tim and his wife have just recovered from COVID-19 at the time of the recording.
  • They both chose not to get inoculated, as they live socially distant lives from others. But after recuperating, Tim has felt better today than he has for the past five years.
  • He acknowledges that the virus types, especially COVID-19, have impacted many people in various negative ways.

[08:44] How Tim Decided to Talk About Change

  • He was recently asked to write an article discussing change.
  • As he was writing the article, he realized it fits with the recent talk he did for a local rotary club in Atlanta.
  • For this podcast, Tim mashed up what he wrote and spoke about.

[10:33] It’s Not Possible to Avoid Change

  • We can't put ourselves in a position where we can avoid and repel change.
  • The rate of change is accelerating exponentially. With this, we need to immunize ourselves to deal with change.

[12:20] When We Shouldn’t Pursue Change

  • We must not change for the sake of change.
  • Constantly bringing new things in prevents us from getting things done and moving forward.
  • We don’t have to try hard to have change coming at us with how the world is today.
  • So, embrace change when it comes instead of pursuing or avoiding it. Otherwise, it can come back even worse.
  • To deal with change better, we must build up our systems and structures.

[15:00] The Roadmap to Building Up Immunity

  • The roadmap to building up immunity revolves around the words seek, go, create, and another word.
  • Tim always asks guests about which between Seek, Go, and Create resonates with them. But he has never answered the question himself.

[16:49] Seek

  • Tim was a man of action in the past. He would never take time to pause, think, and seek wisdom, just like most of us in society today.
  • One of the most powerful ways to build up your immune system against change is to spend time seeking. Listen to the episode to hear how Tim practices seeking!
  • Tim encourages people he works with to have silent thinking time built into their calendars. He suggests finding something that allows you to seek and be still.

[22:42] Go

  • Go is taking action from the things or instructions you’ve gotten while you were seeking.
  • Tim was previously always on the go. He learned that he needed to sit down and seek first before he goes.
  • Some people want 100% of the information before taking action, while some figure things out as they go.
  • Having a coach can help you identify how to improve your way of taking action.
[24:16] “You need know yourself. Are you a person that you're like me, “Go go go,” you need to flip that a little bit and do a little bit more of the seek first? Or are you a person that is really slow to take action? Neither one of them is good or bad.”  - Click Here to Tweet This

[25:16] Go for Tim and Glori

  • Tim and Glori are “go into the world” travelers. They’ve been nomads since 2013.
  • Moving into an RV came to them during a quiet, still time when they were seeking. They weren’t sure why.
  • When the virus hit, they wondered if they were being prepared for this event.
  • One byproduct of the past years would be people moving around as it’s now possible to work from different locations.
  • But don’t move to another location unless you hear it in your seek time.

[27:47] Create

  • Tim believes we were created in the image of our Creator, so we should also create.
  • We are creating when we are working on new ways of doing things in work and life.
  • Getting into the creation mode is similar to reaching the self-actualization stage of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.
  • Change can try to knock us off as we move toward what we were created to do. To work around it, it's critical to have undergone that quiet time and be in momentum.

[31:19] Getting into a Maintenance Mode

  • Being in maintenance mode is merely dealing with the minutiae.
  • Be mindful of how much time you're spending on mundane tasks versus really creating.
  • Most maintenance things drain us and keep us from moving toward things we were assigned to do.
  • But being in creation mode gives us energy and a sense of accomplishment.
[32:34] “Once we [create], boy, there's power in that. And there's a real sense of accomplishment and self-actualization that Maslow talks about." - Click Here to Tweet This

[32:42] Now

  • Seek, go, and create NOW; don’t wait.
  • Now doesn’t mean immediately hustling; it could mean pausing and having a quiet time at the moment.
  • It’s easy to say you’re going to start something later or in the future.
  • But some things will come in the future that we need to begin preparing for right now.

[35:18] Hosting Seek Go Create for the Past 2 Years

  • Tim would have started podcasting sooner if someone told him how fun it would be.
  • The podcast has had 123 episodes and 81 interviews so far.
  • It has had around 30,000 downloads and over 9,000 listeners from its two hosting areas. This statistic excludes Facebook and YouTube metrics.
  • Moving forward, the Seek Go Create Podcast team is looking to identify how they can engage and interact more with listeners.

[39:28] Tim’s Answer to Seek, Go, Create

  • Seek is the most important for Tim. The quiet, still time of gaining wisdom and listening to God is most critical.
  • Seek serves as the foundation for the system of seek, go, create.
[40:27] “The quiet, still time of seeking, of gaining that wisdom, of listening to God, that is most critical for me. So I would answer the question that the foundation for me is that word seek. And then from seek, it is go and create.” - Click Here to Tweet This
